Petals of a Fantasy By Karine Gauthier By the setting sun Lives the dream we all keep in our hearts Have you wondered just how far you can go Reaching out for me Hold out your hand and try Reach for the stars shining so bright A secret hope hidden away Between pages of a book Invisible dream so long ago I dreamt Afraid maybe it could be a reality Let loose in my life it could take part Accepted Petals of a rose newly picked Given between lovers Calm before the storm hits The rose eventually blooms Before fading away in darkness Holding nothing but the memory of its scent Conflicting thoughts of love and fear Never calm as I wait Waiting for you to show me what I need Afraid to ask Maybe I was right The world isn't such as I thought Death and misery surround all our days Where is the point to continue But in that rose, so long ago forgotten Lay the hope of a thousand dreamers With hopes pressed between pages of a book To be shared on another rainy day 1st place, Grades 11/12 poetry

Save our Souls By Becki Worsfold We try to find the answers Because much is left unknown, Some of us start thinking That we forged this heart of stone.

2

Despair on tear-stained faces And all they ask is why Their loved ones are gone, He wanted them to die. We know not where it comes from, That distortion in one's mind, That births a deadly hunter Whose prey he seeks to find. When he loaded his new gun And walked straight down the hall, Was there hesitation? Did he think at all?

He ignored the cries and screams And silenced them so fast, When that silence shrouded him His own life was the last. These victims could not hide From their killer's brutal hate, And sorrow cripples us When we think about their fate. We could be future hunters Or prey without controls If nothing changes here, If no one saves our souls. A tribute to the Virginia Tech College shooting, in which 33 people were killed. 2nd place, Grades 11/12 poetry

Sonnet 1.0 By Nick Pullen

4

When boulders melt into the shining sea, Their fall was not for lack of flailing fight, But as time's marches grow longer, we see His powers grow, multiply, and take flight. No strength is without limits, without bounds, As mother earth herself can testify; Without rebirth, to reseed ravaged grounds All would be dust, shadows, and endless sky. Why then, as the cruel pressures of my world Do mount and rise up like the grasping tide, As the fickle whims of fellow men swirl Around me, do I not sleep, retreat inside? Because the strains that so beset me with their cry Keep me lucid, and persuade me not to die. 3rd place, Grades 11/12 poetry

Dawn and Dusk By Jane Hickey As the sun set, the moon appeared The sound of owls in a distant tree All is still The sound of light traffic The rustling wind The aching sound of the wind flying through the trees Children sound asleep in their beds All is still The sound of dogs snoring at the foot of the bed The city lights disappearing for the night The soft music from car radios All is still Now dusk turns to dawn 1st place, Grades 9/10 poetry

All Are Named (A Wind in the Door) By Beatrice Chan Downtown Eastside A wind in the door blowing cold. I am forty-nine women, twenty-six women, one woman. (Sereena, Mona, Andrea, Georgine, Brenda and Marnie). Missing for six years And no one who had the power to look for me Even tried. 6

Whore, druggie, alcoholic, abused, poor, object. I was un-named, murdered, dismembered, desecrated. (Sereena, Mona, Andrea, Georgina, Brenda and Marnie). But I was loved, alive, remembered, sacred as Daughter, sister, friend, neighbour, lover, woman. Sereena, Mona, Andrea, Georgina, Brenda and Marnie, Six of many. All are human. All are named. Name me, name me, name me, And there will be no wind in the door. 2nd place, Grades 9/10 poetry

The Man Behind the Wheel By Dex Campbell I knew a man who drove with both feet tied to the gas pedal so that he could never slow down He couldn't stop to enjoy Eating at his favourite restaurant Or play his favourite sport Instead of ambition driving him he drove his ambition He assumed it was the only way he would get anywhere He played no music He ate no cake He talked to no friends He just kept going and going two feet on the gas never looking back although he found no joy in driving 3rd place, Grades 9/10 poetry

Cedar Cathedral By Meggy Chan Still. Under the vaulted blue dome Sunlight filters through the verdant stained glass leaves. Dark robed trees preside over lichen dressed altars Waving censers of sweetly scented cedar. The choir of hidden birds chants joy. The Break of Dawn By Paige Mackey Every morning at the break of dawn A silence covers the earth One that is calm, soft, and beautiful At that moment, there are no troubles As the sun starts to rise, you think Not knowing how the day will be Just sitting alone Letting life pass by But in another moment, it will begin again Not as it was earlier that day But if only the world could be as calm As it was at the break of dawn. 2nd place, Grades 7/8 poetry

What Do I See? By Natalie Jennings

10

What do I see? The beautiful Bahama land Pink beaches lined with sand. What do I see? The white caps rolling into the beach Knocking tanners off their feet. What do I see? The brown horses downtown It's too hot so they frown. But they gallop along, doing their rounds What do I see? The colourful sunset of pink, orange, and red. It's getting late now and enough has been said. What do I see? What I see is total darkness And soon I will be fast asleep And dream wonderful dreams. 3rd place, Grades 7/8 poetry

Mountain By Jordan Detmers

12

The howl of the mountain gale frightens my frozen ears I try to gather myself up, and dry my tears For 20 days I have called this place home Most of my time now spent in a canvas dome I gaze out into the winter's might The power of the snow fills me with fright I am not prepared for this, But I'm not ready to die tonight The journey begins, with the darkness all around me I forge ahead, each step draining my body Up through the plateau, across the shelf of ice Slowly moving through it all, my body in a vice There! The crevasse, cross it now Time is running out, I feel like lying down‌ Up the face of this glacial beast Unknown to me what lies above At home for me awaits a hero's feast The land which I am a son of

My body is burning, my mind is slowing I'm almost at the top, but fatigue is showing Glory awaits me at the summit Getting there will take all my cunning I gaze up at the mountain's might The power within me fills me with fight I have trained all my life for this And I am ready to go home tonight I reach the top, I am finally home I once was trapped, but now am free I raise my face towards the heavens I see someone looking down at me My journey has ended now, I am ready to go My body gives out, and I collapse in the snow

Shakespearian Sonnet By Shvawn Christensen It was a glorious night when my eyes first fell upon thee A majestic moment which stopped the clocks and time stood still Not a sliver of doubt; I leapt into love, it was meant to be A ring to bond us together forever, I ask thee if thy will. My love for you is like the infinite bond of the sun and moon From Atlantic to Pacific, not land nor water can divide our love We are one like the great birds of love and their harmonic tune We are entwined in relation like hand and glove Be it such a loss if thy should disappear The sun forevermore would faileth to light my sky Existence would be not, simply a world of fear A pilgrimage to heaven on feathered wings thou would fly Through each and every stage of life our love will succumb Even then, even now, in all days to come

Government vs. Self By Adrienne Miller

16

It's fantastic on the outside But the lies are getting to me On the outside‌ Try to smile But can't forget You knew it all along It's okay, it's just fine You can cheat on me You can break me And steal all I have You're under my skin I try to make the hate go away Though my faith is wearing down Make your excuses Go confess your sins Some people forgive But others are not so easy Don't deny your mistakes You could be the cause of pain And years later, no one will forgive you that You're under my skin I wonder when you'll realize That it's not about you It's about us.

To a Friend By Kim Vincent I promise, that as each day goes by, One less tear will drop from your eyes. Because eventually you'll realise, Even though that person very close to you, Isn't around anymore, They still make up a large part, Of that love you feel deep down in your heart. That love that you shared, Will never be deterred, As you express it through the falling of each tear. And if it feels empty because they're not around, Just know that they're watching from above, Looking down at you on the ground. There is never a day that passes us by, Where our loved ones do not check in on us, From time to time. No matter what people say, Every minute, of every day, They are there for us to talk to and share, Any emotion, or anything and everything we care to divulge and bare. They'll listen to you, No matter what you do. And although at times it may feel like they're gone, They're really just above us, All day long.

Sonnet 1: I Can’t Believe My Eyes By Courtney Cooper When I wake up I can't believe my eyes, Out my window is a curtain of white. I feel wholly blind and to my surprise The road, the yard, the car are out of sight. 18

I listen eagerly to the TV. Announce school is cancelled today, I pray. Outside my canvas is awaiting me. Yes! They declare today is a Snow Day! Yesterday the sky was bare, the streets clear Now snowballs fly, children cheer, play and run This storm has made my stresses disappear And brought back youthful memories of fun. Unexpectedly winter has arrived, And swiftly my sprits have been revived.

The Writing of Life By Alison Cameron The wind turns the pages, One by one. They each tell a story, Of a life now done. "Once upon a time, In a land far away‌" All with happy endings None end in dismay. 20

Life is a story, Not a comedy, Not a play. Each life must adapt to the setting in which it's laid. We are guided By a superiority unknown, Like the words of an author As the rules we are to follow. I put down my pen, Another tale has been told. The wind flips my pages, One by one, They each tell a story, Of a life now done.

Our Wasting World By Stephanie Worsfold How How How How

long long long long

can we put it off? until the end? until the world is gone? until there aren't any hands to lend?

How long until our world is wasted? Not long they say, not long at all, Be concerned for the children, For you won't be around to witness the fall. How long until our world is dead? Not long they say not far from now We will soon see the damage we have caused And then you will be asking yourself 'How?' How How How How

long did we put it off? long had our visions been twirled? could our eyes not have realized? long did we ignore the cries of our painfully wasting world?

When the Sun Goes Down By Earl Sheppard

24

Like a bright sun she glistens in the light, I thought she could light the sky with a smile, It turns out all she could bring was rain clouds She doesn't care, but I'm sitting here soaked Her face is beautiful like a bright star, So beautiful from her head to her toes, She is like a mannequin from a store, So nice from outside, but nothing inside I'd do anything to make her happy, She would do anything to make me mad, When her sun shone on me I felt happy, Now her sun has set, and it's time to move on, I found a flower in a field of weeds, It turns out she was just a weed indeed.

Invisible Evil By Christian Seale A school somewhere far away Kids learn and play, happy and smart Some abandoned, some lost from their families These kids learn, play and are happy

28

These kids are unaware of the dangers that lie within them Lurking around and getting stronger Their small bodies try to fight it but cannot hold up Until one day they disappear Once they disappear, no one will ever know that they have gone As the evil inside of them gets stronger and there is no cure Some do not know they have it and are scared Every weekend in the cities, there are funerals But in the small towns People walk for hours, days, just to see a doctor Some do not get to go And there are no big funerals there

Now darkness surrounds the villages As night mourns over the land, many will die and disappear A village is lost, it was far away, and no one knows The evil is strong and has wiped out many There are hospitals around, but are filling up. Some who are in need get put on the list. Others don't know what to do. And when they can go it is too late. Now it has come and will not go. The evil lies within and flows through. Seizing lives from life, and destroying families. As doctors try to stop it, it will always flow forever.

Unknown Beauty By Nikki Gosselin Platinum thunder streaks the sky with a silvery purple light, Rain pummels through the cover of a silent night, Darting about, the water breaks on my skin, For feeling alive, I'm dying to begin.

30

Miles away I am flying with butterflies, Leaving behind the lies of reality, Nothing here but the rainbow, and me Something to be said, Yet, in the prospect of words, nothing to be had. Like the touch of silk, a cool breeze brushes my face, Far below the butterfly plays, The green grass is grown in rows, The white crystals of snow melting into my skin, Perfection at its most beautiful. Back to the storm, Into the eye, Unknown beauty and perfection, A dangerous scorn.

Ripped open houses, debris in the yard Trees separated from their roots, Far beneath an azure sky, The earth seems scarred. Yet what is unseen, And what is unknown, Is such a shame, For beauty is found in the rarest of places. What cannot be understood, Cannot be seen. What cannot be seen, Cannot be acknowledged, Unacknowledged beauty is rampant. To this point, To this end, To be appreciated, Is unknown beauty, which never ends.

Untitled By Hope Casserley Is it worth explaining hurt souls in love? The hurt souls in love experience sheer pain. Rising up; he will speak to you above, Everlasting pain inside like a stain. Happy ones in love will suffer the most. Other ones will resist the bond inside, Ignore the powerless like they're a ghost. Bonds within resistors will not abide. The sadness wells up in the both of them, Regretful words are swooped away. Brand new beginnings will start with a stem. How they end up, is their own choice and say. Shall I explain the sheer pain within you? Only comfortable ones that can, do!

Follow the Leader By John MacKinnon One by one, another falls, Into the ocean blue. Tempted by their peers' calls, Their lives were quickly through. In order to maintain their status, The rules were slowly made. Without the proper apparatus, Their friends seemed to change. 34

At last a child rose above, Rebelled against the norm. Amidst the bounds of hate and love, Opportunities began to storm. Others later, seemed to follow, The path of being unique. It took the others time to swallow, That life wasn't another thing to critique. So in the end it all worked out, For the one who had broke free. And all the peers were without a doubt, "To be unique, is the way to be."
