Here and Now: Our People, Place and Program This ambitious campaign is unlike any other previously undertaken by the LCS Foundation. The goal: immediate and impactful investment in a diverse array of projects, each intrinsically aligned with our culture and values.

Within this booklet, you’ll find 17 exciting projects, comprised of 150 $20,000 funding opportunities. These projects will make a meaningful difference for our students across so many facets of school life—our people, place and program. Individual projects will begin when funded, with a goal of securing funding for each project by June 2017.

The Grove community is founded in strength, compassion, and generosity. With every challenge, there lies opportunity. Student Financial Assistance Our goal is to ensure that deserving and outstanding young people are able to participate in the unique educational experience offered at LCS. We have a robust financial assistance program, dispersing $1.9M annually, supporting 1-in-4 students who would otherwise be unable to attend the school. It is the student who everyone wants to know, who every coach wants on their team, who excels and thrives on hard work and a determined spirit—that student needs you.

Home Citizenship Service Learning

Faculty and Staff Recognition Grant As a professional learning community, the staff and faculty at Lakefield College School embrace and model the value of life-long learning. We value opportunities to recognize exceptional achievement within our staff and faculty community and to invest in professional growth.

Your support of this project will award development grants to staff and faculty based on three categories: 1) Peer Nominated Recognition, 2) Student Nominated Recognition, and 3) Proposals for Professional Development. In addition to creating opportunities for individual growth, each grant recipient would be asked to share their learning within our school community.

THRIVE—Health and Wellness Program Our ability to learn depends on our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.

Since 2015, the school’s health and wellness initiative, THRIVE, has been supporting and educating LCS students and staff on these important issues. THRIVE requires ongoing financial support to enable innovative programming such as the Mental Health Awareness Partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), the Dr. Greg Wells Student Health Partnership and the Positive Psychology Initiative. Additionally, there are opportunities to fund new initiatives such as campuswide wellness infrastructure improvements (Outdoor Education kitchen—appliances, hydration station, blackout curtains, bike repair station).

Health & Wellness Mindfulness Innovation

Stand Up Paddleboards A fitness trend that has spread across the globe, Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs) have proven to be more than just a fad. Lakefield College School staff and students have been asking for SUPs to come to The Grove for a number of years. A class set of paddles and boards would enhance our Outdoor Education and Waterfront programs, while encouraging fitness, adventure and love of the outdoors.

Walking Trail Our school is situated on 315 acres of beautiful grounds—this project aims to help make more of that space accessible by creating a managed campus-wide walking trail. Not only will this give our staff and students the gift of access to more outdoor spaces, but it also imparts the gift of time. A well-managed trail invites extended use of the outdoor-season—late into the fall and earlier in the spring.

Campus-wide Social Seating A project designed to create comfortable and practical outdoor social seating areas throughout our campus. These spaces will be accessible for both teaching and recreational use, encouraging spontaneous and planned social gatherings and the use of our beautiful campus to the benefit of staff and students, as well as visiting parents and alumni.

Parcourse Fitness Trail A parcourse fitness trail consists of elements and obstacles along an outdoor path which encourages users to challenge themselves to exercise using only their body and surroundings. Examples can include running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, jumping and rolling—a fun, creative way to work out in an outdoor setting.

Disc Golf Course Disc Golf, also known as Frisbee Golf, is a fun and challenging game appropriate for all ages. Much like traditional golf, the aim is to use a frisbee to navigate the course completing each “basket” with as few strokes as possible. The school’s beautiful natural campus makes it an ideal setting for a Disc Golf course, and this new activity would encourage students, staff and their families to get outside and be active.

Nature Play & Adventure Health & Wellness

Residential Landscaping Our 12 residential houses are home to over 265 boarding students for 10 months of the year.

This residential landscaping initiative is an innovative, student-led opportunity to create flexible outdoor living spaces for each of our houses. Students will work with Landscape Architect Helen Batten to design each space and, where possible, they will be involved in the building and implementation of these new areas in the spring of 2017.

Organic Vegetable Garden Known affectionately as ‘the gulch,’ the outdoor area between the Duke of York and G. Winder Smith Hall is a central but currently under-utilized space. The plan for an organic garden has been student-led by LEAF (Lakefield Environmental Action Force) in collaboration with landscape architecture student and alumnus Dario Gabbani ’11. The design includes planters suitable for herbs and vegetables, social seating focused on a fire pit, and an outdoor connection to the school’s newlydeveloped Contemplative Space. This multi-purpose garden aims to provide a connection to the natural world while developing increased knowledge of agriculture, botany, and sustainability. For our students, the opportunity to contribute to a lasting and environmentally sound project has been tremendously empowering.

G. Winder Smith Dining Hall Improvements The G. Winder Smith Dining Hall is a vital hub of activity, serving every member of our community on a daily basis. As we continue to expand our food services (increasing quality, variety and catering to specific nutritional and dietary needs), our facilities also need to evolve.

Long-term plans are currently underway for a new dining hall. In the interim, this innovative improvement plan is designed to outfit the current space to better serve our student population immediately. New equipment (such as a pizza oven) will be introduced and capital improvements made to the dining hall will live on as that beloved space is repurposed in the future.

Health & Wellness Citizenship Home

Flex Furniture for Classrooms Gone are the days of “sit still and listen-up” teaching—our faculty continue to inspire and innovate with new models of teaching and learning. On a class-by-class basis, our students are working on invidual projects, in small groups, in large groups and in seminar-style Harkness groups. An investment in new, lightweight, adaptable furniture in our classrooms is needed for our teachers to create optimized and flexible learning environments that enhance student learning.

Trish and Scott McCain Foyer Furnishings The Trish and Scott McCain Foyer has evolved to become much more than simply the entrance to our theatre. This communal area serves as a classroom, study space, social lounge and as a gallery featuring student and alumni art.

The existing furniture dates from 2004, and was not designed to suit so many changing purposes. New adaptable, flexible furniture will enhance this already beautiful space and ensure it continues to meet the daily needs of our students.

Creativity Learning Design Innovation

Sports Court The Bob Armstrong Rink is a hub of activity in winter months. This project is designed to offer year-round use of this prominant space, and to provide additional outdoor learning and training spaces for our students. Flex Court is a tile-based flooring system designed specifically for athletic use, which would give the rink surface yearround life as an outdoor gymnasium space suitable for a wide variety of activities.

Passenger Vans As Lakefield College School seeks to dramatically expand programming in its arts, cocurricular, and service opportunities, we have an increasing number of students travelling within the local area on a daily basis. A small fleet of school vans will permit our students to be out and about with ease, whether that means seeking out whitewater with the Kayak Team, attending a Fulford Cup Debate, or community service endeavours at The Mount in Peterborough or our beautiful Northcote Campus.

Citizenship Service Learning

Science Lab Refurbishments The innovative repurposing of existing spaces will have a domino effect that will redefine the core of our science classrooms and enhance learning. The physics lab and physics classroom (currently separated by a hallway) will be moved and consolidated into one modern and flexible learning space, leaving the vacated spaces to be renovated as a new, larger general science classroom and science faculty office. Additionally, a universal washroom will be added, serving both the science area and the Bryan Jones Theatre.
