Dear Hepburn Alumni Challenge Participant, Each year, LCS sends reports like this to donors who very generously have endowed their own family bursaries at The Grove. Today, for the first time, I’m pleased to share this document with you. Through your generous support, and that of our alumni peers, the Hepburn Alumni Challenge Bursary has become an important success in which our entire alumni community can find ownership and pride. As you’ll read here, the impact of our collective effort has been, and continues to be life-changing. Even more, one must also recognize the opportunities it creates for alumni families to whom the school is now accessible. Your generosity makes a difference, and your gift—regardless of size—is more than a financial gift; truly a vote in support of LCS. It creates opportunities for great kids, motivates the support of others, and helps to preserve Grove values in an increasingly tumultuous world. I love LCS, and I’d guess that if you’re reading this, you do too. Together, we’ve already made a meaningful difference; but we’re not done. Mid-way through Year Four of the Challenge, we still have to take action to maximize John ’68 and Jane Hepburn’s generous gift incentive. I’m going to keep asking you to support LCS. You help make our school stronger. You help great students live and learn in an environment where they are encouraged to be their best selves. And perhaps, you’re making a sound investment in a program which one day could help your own children or grandchildren attend LCS. Regardless of what motivates you, our entire community benefits from your generous participation. The Hepburn Alumni Challenge Bursary Spearheaded by John ’68 and Jane Hepburn during the 2014/15 school year, the Hepburn Alumni Challenge set out to transform alumni donor participation at LCS. Driven by an inspiring gift incentive offer from John and Jane, as well as the efforts of more than 75 volunteer decade and class captains, the Hepburn Alumni Challenge succeeded in motivating unprecedented numbers of alumni to make a gift to the school, more than tripling our alumni donor participation rate. Funds contributed to this program were allocated to establish the Hepburn Alumni Challenge Bursary, which is to be awarded annually to deserving students from alumni families who, due to financial need, would otherwise be unable to attend LCS.

Dear Donor, I am currently attending Grade 10 at LCS thanks to your generous support. LCS has had an incredibly positive impact on my life—I’ve made great friends, and have learned so much from all of the amazing teachers. The opportunities that this incredible school provides are unparalleled by any other school in the country. This fall, I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the fall musical production of Damn Yankees. It was an interesting experience for me, as it forced me to step out of my comfort zone and sing a solo when I am not normally a singer. In the end, I really enjoyed the opportunity to sing solo! As it is my first year attending this school, the musical was also a great opportunity to meet people passionate about theatre and make new friends. I enjoyed working with the students and teachers involved in the performance so much, in fact, that I am going to be auditioning for the LCS spring production of Lord of the Flies. One of my favourite things about LCS is the Art Room! This room is filled with everything a visual artist such as myself could ever desire! Unlike most schools, Lakefield’s Art Room is almost always open for students to use, and I have spent a great deal of my time over the past several months painting, sketching, and simply being creative in the space. One of my favourite times at the school thus far was when my art class took a bus out to the Kawartha Highlands, and spent the afternoon sketching the natural world around us. These sketches would later become beautiful acrylic paintings that the class produced whilst learning about the Canadian Group of Seven. To me, Lakefield’s most attractive quality is its acceptance and diversity. With 37 countries from around the world represented by the student body alone, this school is a place where one can learn about new cultures, languages and ways of life. I am so grateful to have been able to attend this remarkable school. I am excited to see what my future years here will bring, and to discover my own personal Lakefield difference, as countless students before me have also done. Dear Donor, Lakefield is truly one of the best places in the world and I am so lucky to be able to call it my home away from home for the past three years. This year at Lakefield has probably been my best year so far since I have been here. I have been pushed out of my comfort zone to try things that I never thought I would do coming to LCS in Grade 9. I have made so many new friends and built relationships that will last for such a long time to come. This winter, I joined the girls’ hockey team—before our first practice, I had never been in hockey skates let alone touched a puck, but I was eager and ready to learn the sport. I was welcomed onto the team with open arms, despite lack of experience. Since the beginning of the season, I have improved so much and a few of my teammates have said that I actually look like a hockey player now! Our team may not have won a single game this season but to us, it does not matter— this team is now one of the many families that I am part of at Lakefield and I am so glad to be a part of it. In July, I will be going with a group of nine other students to the Keele River in the Northwest Territories for the Irving Expedition. We will be doing some community service near Yellowknife and then canoeing on the Keele River for two weeks. My dad is an alumnus of Lakefield and also went on the Irving Expedition—so I will be the first, second generation student to go on this trip. I am so excited to have the chance to go on an adventure like this. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I know I will never forget. To me, Lakefield is more than just a school, it is the place where I have learned who I am, stepped out of my comfort zone and met so many amazing people. There is a sense of community here unlike anywhere else and you can feel it from the second you walk onto campus. I cannot express my gratitude to you, and all of the other donors because without you I could not be able to attend Lakefield. This school has changed my life so I would like to genuinely thank you for your generous donation. You have made a real impact on me and so many others at Lakefield. Thank you! I am happy to share this report on the Hepburn Alumni Challenge Bursary, which highlights some of the opportunities the financial assistance program gives to our students, as well as the positive impact your generosity has on The Grove. During my first year as Head of School and Foundation, it has become so clear to me that we have an outstanding community and school. Not only is LCS situated on a beautiful, natural lakefront campus, it excels at providing a strong, caring community and well-rounded educational experience—“learning through relationships” in a community of teachers, coaches, staff and peers who know each other really well. This extends to our alumni and LCS families who are so engaged as volunteers, ambassadors and supporters of The Grove, even long after students have graduated. In fact, LCS is setting records for unprecedented levels of support among Canadian Schools. I’m so proud to be part of an educational community that focuses on the well-being and education of the “whole student”—nurturing every student to reach his or her potential through personalized and engaging academics, co-curricular arts and sports programs. I was able to attend Lakefield College School, Princeton and Harvard thanks to the generosity of donors who came before me. Their support of financial assistance helped my parents afford the education I received. I recall one particular mentor in my career whose commitment to giving back impacted me strongly. He said, “I recognized that I had benefitted from someone’s philanthropy. I had no idea what my own financial future would be, but I felt an obligation to do something, if and when I had the resources.” He went on to fund a large number of bursaries and scholarships, and gave his time generously to non-profit organizations.
