OUR STORIES. OUR IMPACT. 24 Months at a Glance – 2018-20 Report

1

OUR COMMUNITY. OUR STORIES. OUR IMPACT. Our mission, to challenge and enable students to reach their individual potential in

mind, body and spirit, comes with a commitment to uphold our community values and to ensure that the academic and social needs of our students are paramount. We believe that our small, caring community and its approach to educating teenagers is unlike anything else in the world—that Lakefield helps produce graduates who are good, caring people equipped to do amazing things.

A Message from our Head of School Our Community. Our Stories. Our Impact. provides an opportunity for us to celebrate and share the remarkable support of hundreds of individuals and the many successes of our students. Reflecting on the past 24 months, I am struck by the depth and breadth of what we have accomplished. Not only did we launch an innovative strategic research process (see highlights in the Grove News Winter 2019), this report illustrates the incredible commitment of our community and demonstrates the tremendous impact their support has had through the experiences of our students. It is something that would simply be impossible without our donors, volunteers, supporters and advocates for The Grove—individuals whose passion for LCS enriches our community each and every day. Within these pages you’ll find program highlights, quick facts, testimonials, financials and acknowledgments of gratitude intended to provide you with a snapshot of the depth of engagement that was demonstrated throughout the 2018/19 and 2019/20 school years. We strive for clarity and transparency and share stories from donors about how and why they support The Grove, and letters from students and staff about the impact that donor support has had on them. You may even find your name on our annual list of donors. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire LCS community – students, parents, alumni, alumni parents, staff and friends – whose passionate support of and belief in our mission have driven the many stories of impact and financial success you will read about, and in turn, enabled us to make our school as strong as it can be for our students. Thank you all so very much for your support of The Grove over the last two years.

The new dining hall has been identified as one of the major priorities under Community First in the school’s latest strategic plan and will be situated in the heart of our campus. A gathering place for the entire community, the dining hall will be designed to strengthen and enhance the student experience and will be named in honour of the John and Jane Hepburn Family.

It has been identified as a of our beautiful waterfront while providing students with the opportunity to engage in a sport that meets the aspirations of the school’s vision to provide authentic learning experiences, in the outdoors, as part of a community. The revival of this program has been a community effort. Our co-curricular team was grateful for the efforts of working group members and advisors Warren Jones ’88, Andrew Yates P ’22 and Alan Redfern ’78 P ’09, ’11, ’13. Their knowledge, experience and passion for sailing are helping to propel this program.

We’re excited about the school’s vision and strategic direction and wanted to do our part to accelerate its realization. I feel very fortunate to be in a position, thanks

in large part to the education I received at Lakefield, to help make the school even stronger for its students. JOHN HEPBURN ’68

Inspired to Give Back In their final year, many of our graduating classes honour their time at The Grove by generously supporting a Class Bursary. Additionally, many graduating classes elect to support a material gift for students to enjoy. In early 2019, the Class of 2019 began brainstorming ways they could positively impact their fellow students with their grad class gift. They determined that there was a need for more gathering spaces outside the library where day and boarding students could have a comfortable place to study and learn together. They imagined repurposing the common space in Upper Hadden Hall to create a welcoming study environment for students. Inspired by the Class of 2019, the Anstoetz Family offered to help bring this idea to life with a generous gift of furniture and design. Melanie Anstoetz, mother of Robin Anstoetz ’19 and Nick Anstoetz ’21, artfully designed a space that includes a variety of tables, desks and seating areas. Melanie was able to capture the vision of the Class of 2019 and create a functional and beautiful communal gathering place for students. In response to such a generous offer, members of the class contributed funds to complete the redesign of the space as part of their class gift.

The Gift of Knowledge In January 2020, Sharon and Harvey McCue, parents of LCS alumni Duncan McCue ’88, provided LCS students with a special gift by adding to our Indigenous Peoples Book collection. LCS librarian Cathy Maher noted “Gifts such as these are essential to the continued strength and attractiveness of our holdings and are important resources for our students.” Along with the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada by The Royal Canadian Geographical Society and The Reconciliation Manifesto by Arthur Manuel and Grand Chief Ronald Derrickson, works by much respected indigenous authors Robin Wall Kimmerer, Richard Wagamese, Tanya Tagaq, Waubgeshig Rice and Katherena Vermette were also included.

Seb Jones ’13 Memorial Poetry Slam Seb Jones ’13 was a sporty outdoorsman, keen canoeist, an artist, and a friend to all who knew him. Sebastian was influential in ensuring everyone felt valued and included. Sadly in June of 2019, Sebastian died by suicide. As a tribute to Seb’s spirit, his love of poetry and writing, Seb’s family and friends sponsored an annual poetry slam competition, to take place each year on Seb’s birthday, February 22. In doing so, they hope to add some joy and lightness during the long dark days of winter.

Dalglish Art Award Winners The purpose of the Peter Dalglish Art Award is to inspire, encourage and recognize artistic talent at Lakefield College School by promoting promising young artists and their future contributions to art in Canada and beyond. In recognition of their father’s affection for Lakefield College School, his love of the arts and his commitment to nurturing and supporting young artists, Geordie Dalglish ’89 and Kim Dalglish Abell, established the Peter Dalglish Art Award. Pedro Zapata Milla ’19, recipient of the award in 2019 said: “Through my artwork, I want the audience to reflect on time at The Grove and its value. The focal part of the piece is the hands inside the eye, something like a “mirror into your soul.’’ An eye reflecting a bond of friendship and the idea of how we don’t have control over our situations but we have a choice about how we view them.” Chelsea Yue ’21, the 2020 award recipient, shared how “Every art form has its own charisma. I like the textures of oil paint; the scratches of charcoal and the smooth pattern of watercolor paint. I chose digital artwork because it establishes strong connections between people despite the unsurmountable distances; everyone has the ability to access every detail in the artwork in a remote environment.”

Sebatian Jones ’13

Sebastian’s time at Lakefield was really when he shone brightest and was a period in his life where he was truly confident and happy. He felt like he belonged there and had a home at Lakefield, and apart from our island on Georgian Bay, it might have been the last place he really ever felt like he truly belonged.

Hepburn Alumni Challenge When we launched the Hepburn Alumni Challenge in September 2014, John ’68 and Jane Hepburn challenged our alumni community to come together in support of LCS by giving back. The goal was to increase participation and help LCS become more financially accessible for alumni families. The Hepburn’s generous $3M incentive ensured that every alum could make a powerful impact. The Hepburn Alumni Challenge concluded in June

We were fortunate to have 19 alumni children and grandchildren at LCS in 2019/20, 8 of whom were supported by the Hepburn Alumni Challenge Bursary.

I often spend time discussing with my dad how Lakefield has changed since he attended the school. While there are slight changes in appearance, we both agree that the same feeling is still there when you pass through the gates. The feeling of home, of support and something else that is hard to explain. The best way I can describe it is a sense of interconnected history and community. A connection between

the current tight woven community and those who once attended the school. Those individuals may not be there in body, yet they are in spirit.

While I am sad that my time here is almost at its end, I am comforted by the fact that a piece of Lakefield will never leave. I will take with me all of the fond memories, as well as all that I have learned. Lakefield has become an essential part of who I am, and the basis of any individual never truly leaves. I look forward to the sense of nostalgia I'll feel someday, as I

reunite with old Lakefield friends, discussing small jokes and incredible memories from high school.

Grateful for the Visionaries Whether through bursaries that enable deserving and outstanding teenagers to attend The Grove, the launching of significant and meaningful programs or the enhancement of current or new facilities, every day—without exception— students are impacted by the thoughtful kindness of LCS family and friends. As a school, we continue to be inspired by our community’s support through legacy gifts. This includes estate gifts that have already been realized, like the unexpected but life-changing bursary from John Ballachey ’58 through a gift

I can be more generous with a gift in my will. I can make a difference to a place I believe in and have so much affection for in a way that I can’t in the here and now. I fervently want students who deserve to be at LCS – but can’t afford it – to be there. Their contributions to the quality of life at Lakefield are enormous; they help other students grow by association. So,

I directed my bequest to a bursary.

There’s something noble and gratifying about helping young people – who may not even be born yet – flourish in a place you’ve come to love. I can’t imagine any other gift or cause that would give me greater satisfaction.

from 1971 to 1985, Terry Guest and his wife Sue influenced and inspired countless young men within the Grove community to step outside their comfort zone, explore the rugged and beautiful wilderness of Canada and find themselves within the great outdoors. The GEO initiative, led by a small and enthusiastic advisory council, Hugh Macdonnell ’85 P ’18, Jock Fleming ’74 and Andrew Durnford ’85, inspired other alumni to join them in creating an LCS experience – an expedition – that would honour Terry and help to make it possible for as many as ten grade 9 and 10 LCS students to immerse themselves in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

There is so much more to life, and much of it is to be found outside — outside the earphones and telephones, outside the computers. Outside the house, outside the classroom, outside the school, outside the comfortable circle of best friends, outside the proverbial comfort zone. And this is where I hope Guest Expedition Ontario will be striving to take us... to get outside to places and spaces we didn’t even know existed.

PETER WARD ’49

Lakefield was a turning point in my life. I was a miserable 14-year-old who had just lost his dad in the sinking of the HMCS Athabaskan a year earlier. Lakefield put me back on my feet, and the first year was miserable. They say you don’t grow unless you hurt, and I had plenty of fuel for growth that first year, My biggest solace was the chapel and some time spent there alone. Things move on apace, and by the time I left in 1949, I was a Grove booster. Two men in particular taught me about living. One, of course, was the Head, G. Winder Smith, who knew almost everything about what went on, and was a fabulous teacher because he understood people as well as the mathematics he taught. The other was Lorne Mitchell, who taught English and History. He instilled in me a love of both which is still there. I’m now almost 90 years old, and I can still hear his voice and the lessons he taught about living. I could go on, but you get the point. I want other generations to benefit from the Lakefield experience.

I only hope they are helped the way I was.

We’ve been donating to The Grove for nearly twenty years because our son’s six years there as a student were such a vital experience for him. Our donations are usually directed to financial assistance so that more young people can enjoy the exciting and varied

opportunities that made such a difference for Brendan.

Lakefield provided my children with an amazing opportunity and the experience of a lifetime. They forged life long friends, “Grove siblings,” in an idyllic setting one can only dream of, learning while connecting with nature in a safe place. It would not have been possible to educate 4 children here without the support of the school (with scholarships etc). Paying it forward with the monthly donor program just makes it possible for other families to join The Grove life. So long as I am able, The Grove will see my little monthly donations rolling in. Big or small it

helps them all.

AMANDA ETHIER ’98

I think that The Grove is one of the world’s best kept secrets and I am doing my best to let everyone know about it. I want each kid who is deserving of a spot at LCS to be able to go. My brother and I were lucky enough to board at Lakefield and I know we wouldn’t be who we are today without that experience. It’s my hope that continuing to give to LCS means that

deserving students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend get a chance to. It’s just that simple for me.

I recall making regular contributions as early as 1978/79 and there were probably gifts made even a couple of years before that What I know for sure is that for more than 40 years I’ve made a gift to The Grove. I have tried to give something every year. Four generations of my family have enjoyed the benefits of

The Grove. No wonder we think of it as our second home!

As a student, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to attend LCS. Even then I recognized that so much of what I valued, both on campus and in the classroom, was the direct result of the generosity of others. Today, my children are able to experience a Lakefield that has flourished and continues to provide an education that truly embodies ‘mind, body, and spirit’. It supports and enables them to be the best they can be. As parents, we can’t ask for more. The philanthropy of the LCS community that made my time at Lakefield special, continues today, and I am proud to be able to continue to support a place that has impacted me, and my

family, so profoundly.

As an alumnus and an LCS

parent, I am honoured to be able to give back to The Grove.

I’m very glad I went to LCS because it’s much more than just a high school. LCS invites each of its students to envision a rich life of contribution. Students are surrounded by teachers and staff who are doing just that: pursuing lives of contribution with a strong sense of vocation. It’s a privilege to be a part of the LCS community and to donate every year to a school that means so

much to me.
