We Are LEC... Founded in 1856, Lake Erie College has long valued an individualized education. We emphasize a breadth of academic and co-curricular experiences that provide our students with skills that will never become irrelevant. These include creative and entrepreneurial thinking, problem-solving from a variety of perspectives and strong communication skills. These powerful attributes, woven into our degree programs, are valuable and applicable to any profession or career. At LEC, students have unique access to real-world opportunities, including internships and collaborating with an exciting academic community. Our focus on educating the “whole” student provides a platform of success that caters to the needs of an increasingly complex and unpredictable society. Our core values as an institution are guided by the four pillars of our vision: • • • •

Self-discovery The development of strong personal attributes Creative problem-solving The balance of personal and professional goals with the needs of others.

We live and breathe these values by working side-by-side with our students to help them achieve their goals. Be Empowered with us!

faculty

we are scholars & teachers We advise, coach, teach, soar

Our faculty go above and beyond that which takes place in the classroom. They are mentors, partners in learning, and experts in their fields. Our faculty utilize connections in their professions that, when combined with our highly individualized approach to learning, creates a powerful and exciting environment for applying knowledge in the real-world. It is not uncommon to see our faculty having coffee with our students, assisting with projects or walking around our beautiful campus engaged in deep discussions about the future. We believe in building relationships that will last a lifetime.

“To learn how to more effectively and eloquently contribute your voice to public conversation is not only a means of social change, it is a way to add to the diversity of society, broaden others’ perspectives, and arm yourself with the necessary equipment for being a valuable member of society.” Nichole Kathol, Ph.D.

Associate Professor of Communication School of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences

Dr. Kathol has been teaching communication at LEC for five years. It is always powerful for her when a student recognizes how transformative learning can be. She encourages students to always show up for class, not just physically, but mentally. If a student is both physically and mentally present, they are going to get substantially more out of their education. Dr. Kathol’s favorite thing about communication as a program of study is its versatility. Every possible occupation benefits greatly from effective communication skills. Dr. Kathol’s goal is that every degree in communication helps students create powerful, audience centered content, critically analyze messages, overcome communication barriers, embrace differences and influence public discourse.

“By demonstrating excellence in both the classroom and on their teams, our studentathletes are better prepared for the challenges they might face in life. The ability to practice and nurture skills such as time management and prioritizing will undoubtedly help our students later in life as they try to accomplish their goals. Reilly Murphy, Head Coach, Football

Coach Murphy believes that the smallcollege environment makes it easy to get out of one’s comfort zone and create relationships that last a lifetime. He encourages his team to get involved in the campus community by participating in various student activities and getting to know their professors. The Storm Football team is a great “melting pot,” with players representing states across the country who are building their unique skills together. Football provides lots of unique challenges for students, and Coach Murphy sees tremendous opportunities in those challenges. With the busy lives of student-athletes, he is motivated to work with the campus community to improve all aspects of his team’s experiences, whether academic or football related. Coach Murphy relates to his students with a deep understanding by remembering his personal experiences as a student-athlete. He is guided by the philosophy that life is not always easy and that sometimes the hardest things are the most rewarding.

Whether it is in the classroom, on the court or field, or in the community, our student-athletes are making their mark at Lake Erie College. We define success as meeting and exceeding in academics, leading a peer group during team research, inspiring the youth of our community to engage in a senior cleanup housing project or volunteering for the greater campus community. If you strive for more than just a winning record then LEC is the college for you. LEC sponsors 19 NCAA Division-II sports in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. “Speak to as many people as possible. It’s a cliché, but get to know your classmates, team members, and everyone else in the campus community. They can help you further down the line. You can be the most clever person in the world, but if you don’t have communication skills, it’s going to be a struggle.” Jonathon Carr, ‘22 Major: Sport Management Storm Men’s Soccer Player, Student Worker, Athletic Center Game Ops

Jonathon came to the United States from Sunderland, England to play soccer and major in Biology. Through his time in college, he realized that he wanted to stick with what he loved all his life: soccer. He came to LEC and switched to the Sport Management major and joined the up and coming soccer team. As an international student, he speaks very highly of the opportunities to meet people in college from all walks of life. Thanks to the diversity of the soccer team, he’s made friends from Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and of course, the United States. In class discussions, he enjoys getting to bounce ideas off of people with different perspectives. By getting to know students and teammates from other countries and cultures you learn much differently than by remaining in the same country. By becoming independent in college, his immersion into campus life has been a wonderful way to learn. Attending Lake Erie College is the best decision he’s ever made.

“LEC has been instrumental in preparing me to be a professional both in and out of the equine industry. I am so grateful for the work and life experiences I have gotten through my time at LEC.” Sarah Dwyer ‘18

Major: Business Administration/Equine Entrepreneurship IHSA Hunt Seat Team Officer, GA School of Equine Studies, IHSA Hunt Seat Assistant Coach

Sarah knew she wanted to go into the therapeutic horsemanship industry, and the program at LEC caught her attention. She was sold after touring the amazing facility and liked the idea of small class sizes and a tight knit campus. She graduated with a double major in Business Administration and Equine Entrepreneurship and is pursuing her MBA at LEC. As a graduate assistant, she works in the equine program office and is the assistant coach of the IHSA hunt seat team. She had the opportunity to teach the LEC Therapeutic Riding Center summer riding sessions, working with community riders and volunteers as well as LEC student volunteers. Sarah says it’s best to take advantage of all of the horse experiences offered at LEC, since opportunities like this are hard to find.

“I have always been drawn to working with children and I knew that becoming a teacher would be the perfect career for me. I do not see my career as a job, because every day I go to work I realize how much I love what I do.” Norma Gutierez ‘19

Early Childhood Education Currently working at Painesville City Local Schools as 4th grade Math and Science teacher

Growing up as an EnglishLanguage Learner student, Norma wanted to make a difference for struggling students who feel the same way she did. She decided to attend LEC for the small class sizes and caring professors. The professors in the School of Education prepared her for real life experiences, and showed her that teaching is more than academics. Students need caring and understanding educators, and the LEC professors lead by example.
