H

ere in Southwest Louisiana, we take time to enjoy life, food, music and good company. Sometimes, we like to describe the area as a place where Cajuns, cowboys and the coast come together, and it creates an eclectic and relaxing atmosphere. Be sure to visit our attractions, museums, galleries, and experience culinary delights from Cajun food in locally owned restaurants with recipes that have been in families for centuries and the Southwest Louisiana Boudin Trail. Casino entertainment and area nightlife have live music throughout the year. If the outdoors is more your speed, you can enjoy adventures along the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road. Stop by the convention & visitors bureau, 1205 N. Lakeshore Drive, and visit with our friendly staff while you grab a cup of coffee to learn more. CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF LAKE CHARLES HISTORY L ake Charles’ sesquicentennial, the 150th anniversary of the town of Charlestown becoming the city of Lake Charles, will provide opportunities for celebration, reflection as well as inspiration to perform acts of kindess as we come together to commemorate our shared history. Festivities will include the unearthing of a time capsule, the opening of a historical exhibit and a lakefront parade and celebration – sure to be as colorful as Lake Charles’ story. There are plenty of things about Lake Charles that you may have heard, but have you ever thought about how the historic elements of the city can still be seen today? Where did the name “Lake Charles” come from? A little known fact, even to locals is that our city gets its name from a tragically romantic story involving love, jealousy and pirates. The lives of some of the first settlers, Charles Sallier, Catherine LeBleu and pirate Jean Lafitte, have made huge impacts. Catherine Lebleu’s descendants still live in our area today as owners of the popular restaurant Lebleu’s Landing. Charles Sallier’s memory lives on at the Imperial Calcasieu Museum’s 375 year old landmark, The Sallier Oak. The tales of Jean Lafitte live on with the annual Contraband Days Louisiana Pirate Festival. 16

Did you know that Lake Charles started as a sawmill town? Several homes with the Charpentier Historic District and the entire downtown was built with this lumber. A fire destroyed nearly everything in the early 1900s. About 30 blocks of the downtown area including the courthouse, city hall and the Catholic Church were all destroyed. It’s known as The Great Fire of 1910. Today to commemorate this part of history, Chef Andrew Green opened 1910 Restaurant and Wine Bar. The restaurant is located in the Phoenix Building, which is also symbolic of Lake Charles’ rise from the ashes of The Great Fire of 1910. You can learn more about The Great Fire at the 1911 Historic City Hall or by taking a historic tour using the free Lake Charles Historic Tour app. Visit historical sites and explore our heritage with the “Encounter the Past” 2 day itinerary. And make sure you do not miss any of the sesquicentennial events by downloading the Lake Charles Events app. For more stories, full lists of events, and information on the city's Acts of Kindness campaign, visit celebratelakecharles150.com. Tag your sesquicentennial photos and stories with #LakeCharles150.

MARDI GRAS SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA January 6–February 28

B

eing the “catch” of the town has a whole new meaning from Jan. 6—Feb. 28, as Southwest Louisiana hosts the second largest Mardi Gras in Louisiana. From parades, galas, chicken runs and Zydeco, we make sure the whole family has something to celebrate. The excitement kicks off on January 6 with the annual Twelfth Night Celebration, as the 2016 royal courts of more than 60 krewes usher in the New Year in style with their extraordinary and intricate costumes. After Twelfth Night, laissez les bons temps rouler, as the celebration and festivities pack the calendar until Fat Tuesday on Feb. 28. As Mardi Gras weekend approaches, the celebration escalates with parades, cook-offs, balls, galas, and more! For a taste of Mardi Gras, sample from every pot at the World Famous Cajun Extravaganza and Gumbo Cook Off on Feb. 25.

Always a favorite, don’t miss the Royal Gala on Feb. 27, as the 2017 royal courts of krewes parade for the public in full regalia. Both of these events are held at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Set your alarm clocks on Feb. 28, as Fat Tuesday starts off early with the Iowa Chicken Run followed by gumbo and a Zydeco dance party at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Two new parades join the Cajun Carnival this season, Second Line Stroll; a walking parade, and Jeeps on Parade. Afterward, reserve your spot for the grand finale of Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras, 38th anniversary of the Krewe of Krewes Parade featuring costumes, plenty of beads and elaborate floats winding through Lake Charles. Visit www.swlamardigras.com for more details on Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana.

The excitement kicks off on January 6 with the annual Twelfth Night Celebration…

TURNING BACK THE CLOCKS Each community in Southwest Louisiana has its own unique blend of character and history. With pirates, railroads, Victorian mansions and sleepy oaks, there is much to discover by looking into the colorful pages of the past.

HISTORY OF OUR SIX CITIES LAKE CHARLES

WESTLAKE

VINTON

The romantic history of Lake Charles, involving tales of pirates and buried treasure, began with the arrival of the first French settlers in the 1760s. The lumber boom was responsible for the early rapid growth of the city. Without architects in the area until the early 1900s, the structures reflect the individual characteristics of the carpenters in the “Charpentier Historic District,” on the National Register of Historic Places. Lake Charles celebrates 150 years in 2017.

Westlake was originally named “Rio Hondo,” and the area from Westlake up the Sabine River was also known as “No Man’s Land” to rustlers, pirates and renegades. In the early 1800s, settlers came to the area, purchased l and and renamed it Westlake.

The quaint town of Vinton was once traveled by Civil War soldiers. The soldiers cut a road extending from an area in Vinton known as “Niblett’s Bluff” on the Sabine River. Once known as “Fort Niblett,” the area was home to a lumber camp, railroad, general store, hotel and more.

SULPHUR

DeQUINCY

IOWA

In the late 1800s, Sulphur was a sulfur mining haven. In 1907, the average population of the Sulphur Mines area was 5,000, making it a town unto itself. This fifty-acre tract of land was then known as the “richest fifty acres in the world.” The Brimstone Museum details Sulphur’s early history.

In 1897 the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railway, now the Kansas City Southern, reached the point where its main line bent toward the southwest to Beaumont and the old Calcasieu River. Vernon & Shreveport tram line, now the Lake Charles branch of the K.C.S., joined the main line causing the rise of the town DeQuincy. Today, you can visit the DeQuincy Railroad Museum.

The history of Iowa is filled with stories of the early Midwestern settlers from Kansas, Illinois and Iowa to the French Canadians (Cajuns) to Jean Lafitte’s pirates along the Old Spanish Trail. The railroad that cut through this country brought settlers who were lured to the prairie land for rice farming, raising cattle, and later, oil fields. Known also for the Iowa Rabbit Festival.
