WELCOME TO LAKE CHARLES/ Southwest Louisiana

H

ere in Southwest Louisiana, we take time to enjoy life, food, music and good company. Sometimes, we like to describe the area as a place where Cajuns, cowboys and the coast come together, and it creates an eclectic and relaxing atmosphere. Be sure to visit our attractions, museums, galleries, and experience culinary delights from Cajun food in locally owned restaurants with recipes that have been in families for centuries and the Southwest Louisiana Boudin Trail. Casino entertainment and area nightlife have live music throughout the year. If the outdoors is more your speed, you can enjoy adventures along the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road. Stop by the convention & visitors bureau, 1205 N. Lakeshore Drive, and visit with our friendly staff while you grab a cup of coffee to learn more. Check us out online at www.visitlakecharles.org or call 337-436-9588.

he 58th Annual Louisiana Fur and Wildlife Festival highlights all the local, natural resource industries in the area. The festival caters to all ages and interests featuring parades, pageants, 5K run and 1 mile fun walk, as well as dances, Cajun music, gumbo cook-off, exhibits and a carnival. You can also check out unique contests like trap setting, nutria and muskrat skinning, oyster shucking and skeet shooting, and always a favorite among hunters are the dog trials. These contests and more make this a memorable experience for the whole family and a reason why people keep coming back to one of Southwest Louisiana’s, “oldest and coldest” festivals. Located across from the Cameron Parish School Board grounds in downtown Cameron, gates will open at noon on Friday and at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The admission fees are $10 per person on Friday and $15 per person on Saturday. Children 12 years old and under will be admitted free. For more information, visit www.lafurandwildlifefestival.com.

MARDI GRAS SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA January 6–February 9

B

eing the “catch” of the town has a whole new meaning from Jan. 6— Feb. 9, as Southwest Louisiana hosts the second largest Mardi Gras in Louisiana. From parades, galas, chicken runs and Zydeco, we make sure the whole family has something to celebrate. The excitement kicks off on January 6 with the annual Twelfth Night Celebration, as the 2015 royal courts of more than 60 krewes usher in the New Year in style with their extraordinary and intricate costumes. After Twelfth Night, laissez les bons temps rouler, as the celebration and festivities pack the calendar until Fat Tuesday on Feb. 9. As Mardi Gras weekend approaches, the celebration escalates with parades, cook-offs, balls, galas, and more! For a taste of Mardi Gras, sample from every pot

at the World Famous Cajun Extravaganza and Gumbo Cook Off on Feb. 6. Always a favorite, don’t miss the Royal Gala on Feb. 8, as the 2016 royal courts of krewes parade for the public in full regalia. Both of these events are held at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Set your alarm clocks on Feb. 9, as Fat Tuesday starts off early with the Iowa Chicken run followed by gumbo and a Zydeco dance party at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Afterward, reserve your spot for the grand finale of Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras, 37th anniversary of the Krewe of Krewes Parade featuring costumes, plenty of beads and elaborate floats winding through Lake Charles. TURNING BACK THE CLOCKS Each community in Southwest Louisiana has its own unique blend of character and history. With pirates, railroads, Victorian mansions and sleepy oaks, there is much to discover by looking into the colorful pages of the past.

HISTORY OF OUR SIX CITIES LAKE CHARLES

The romantic history of Lake Charles, involving tales of pirates and buried treasure, began with the arrival of the first French settlers in the 1760s. The lumber boom was responsible for the early rapid growth of the city. Without architects in the area until the early 1900s, the structures reflect the individual characteristics of the carpenters in the “Charpentier Historic District,” on the National Register of Historic Places.

SULPHUR

In the late 1800s, Sulphur was a sulfur mining haven. In 1907, the average population of the Sulphur Mines area was 5,000, making it a town unto itself. This fifty-acre tract of land was then known as the “richest fifty acres in the world.” The Brimstone Museum details Sulphur’s early history.

WESTLAKE

DeQUINCY

Westlake was originally named “Rio Hondo,” and the area from Westlake up the Sabine River was also known as “No Man’s Land” to rustlers, pirates and renegades. In the early 1800s, settlers came to the area, purchased land and renamed it Westlake.

In 1897 the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railway, now the Kansas City Southern, reached the point where its main line bent toward the southwest to Beaumont and the old Calcasieu River. Vernon & Shreveport tram line, now the Lake Charles branch of the K.C.S., joined the main line causing the rise of the town DeQuincy. Today, you can visit the DeQuincy Railroad Museum.

VINTON

IOWA

The quaint town of Vinton was once traveled by Civil War soldiers. The soldiers cut a road extending from an area in Vinton known as “Niblett’s Bluff” on the Sabine River. There are annual re-enactments of battles at Niblett’s Bluff Park.

The history of Iowa is filled with stories of the early Midwestern settlers from Kansas, Illinois and Iowa to the French Canadians (Cajuns) to Jean Lafitte’s pirates along the Old Spanish Trail. The railroad that cut through this country brought settlers who were lured to the prairie land for rice farming, raising cattle, and later, oil fields. Known also for the Iowa Rabbit Festival.
