In the winter of 2018, Joanna found herself engulfed in the buzz of applications for the nursing program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Amid the chatter among applicants, one name continued to stand out: Jake Anderson. His reputation preceded him — a stellar GPA, dedicated volunteer and tutor extraordinaire. Joanna couldn’t help but roll her eyes at all the hype.

By the end of the semester, Joanna had secured her spot in the program. It wasn’t until January of the following year, though, that she finally got to meet Jake face-to-face. Fate had it that they were both part of the same nursing cohort. Jake, appointed as the cohort representative, seemingly lived up to all the chatter.

Joanna & Jake

However, it wasn’t Jake’s reputation that caught Joanna’s attention. It was a hilariously awkward moment during a blood pressure reading exercise that truly changed the game. As Jake went through the steps of taking her blood pressure, Joanna couldn’t help but think, “Great, this guy’s probably already an expert at this.” But when Jake finished, he looked at Joanna and said, “I’m going to be honest with you: I have no idea what your blood pressure is. I couldn’t hear any of the sounds I’m supposed to hear.” They both burst into laughter, and from that moment on, Joanna’s impression of Jake completely changed.

Their friendship blossomed, marked by late-night study sessions and leisurely walks home from class, discovering they lived in the same neighborhood. They both mastered the art of taking manual blood pressures, often sharing a laugh over their initial mishaps! After acing a particularly tough exam, Jake invited Joanna to celebrate with dinner at Dino’s Pizzeria — a night that marked the beginning of something more than just friendship.

Fast-forward to their journey toward marriage. During a trip to Joanna’s ancestral home in the Philippines, Jake realized the timing was perfect. A proposal is not something you are taught how to do. As far as Jake knew, it included the vague idea that it should be somewhere beautiful and should include an element of surprise to “sweep the girl off her feet.” Jake and Joanna had been dating for three-plus years, surviving nursing school, multiple moves and several airport trips. They found joy in the simple things, like grocery shopping or going on walks together, and it was clear to Jake that Joanna was the woman he wanted to marry.

With her father’s blessing secured, Jake embarked on a quest for the perfect setting. Since he had never been to the Philippines and wanted to ensure he picked a suitable place to propose, he asked her family to suggest a few potential locations. They decided on Joanna’s paternal grandparents’ hometown of Bayawan, where their beach lot was located. The day before the proposal, they made the long two-hour drive across Negros to reach Bayawan. Despite the hurdles of a sudden rainstorm, Joanna’s debilitating migraine, and the quest for accommodations, Jake’s determination remained unwavering.

Jake’s nerves were palpable the next morning, Joanna’s parents hired a photographer and told her they were going to the beach to take family Christmas card photos. They finally made it to the family’s beach lot, and without much prompting, Joanna walked straight toward the water. Jake quickly followed her and dropped to one knee, skipping any long-winded speeches, and simply asked, “Joanna Gayo Torres, will you marry me?” Joanna’s immediate wide grin and tear-filled eyes met his. “Are you serious?” This was followed by a kiss that sealed their fate.

In a love story filled with laughter, unexpected moments and unwavering support, Joanna and Jake embarked on their next chapter together, hand in hand, ready to face whatever life throws their way.

Joanna & Jake

What is the best marriage advice that you’ve received so far?

The best advice we ha ve received so far is to enjoy the ordinary together. The truth is that most of our lives are made up of routine, everyday things. Taking time to really appreciate these simple moments for all that they are is something that keeps us grateful and feeling blessed to have each other.

Were there any special traditions incorporated into the wedding?

Joanna i s Filipino-Catholic, so we incorporated the veil, cord, coin and candle ceremony.

“A traditional Filipino wedding might include the lighting of the candle, the draping of the unity cord and veil, plus the exchanging of wedding coins. All rooted in Catholic belief. The candle ceremony involves the ninong and ninang [godfather and godmother] lighting the couple’s candles and then a third candle to symbolize unity. The unity veil ceremony signifies humility, as the couple is draped under a veil to symbolize God’s guidance and support throughout their marriage. In the cord ceremony, two sponsors bind the couple with a silk lasso called a yugal, while the coin ceremony symbolizes the couple’s sharing of worldly goods” –Sinta & Co. website

Where there any other special touches, details or decor of interest?

We did not have a classic wedding entourage. We had no bridesmaids or groomsmen. Instead, we incorporated our family and friends into the ceremony in other ways.

Jakes’s aunt officiated the wedding and his grandparents performed the cord and veil ceremony. Joanna’s nephew and Jake’s uncle both delivered a reading at the ceremony. Joanna’s aunt/ godmother and Jake’s uncle/godfather were the witnesses for the marriage certificate. Nieces, nephews and cousins filled the roles of flower girls, coin bearer and ring bearer. Joanna’s college friends held her train and veil as she walked down the aisle. Finally, at the reception, Joanna’s uncle sang a song for everyone while food was served. To have all these people we care deeply about fill special roles on our big day was deeply meaningful to us and made us feel especially close to our family on our wedding day.

What was your favorite memory on your wedding day?

Seeing our family and friends have fun with us on the dance floor at the reception was the best part of our night. To be surrounded by everyone we love, celebrating our love, was incredibly humbling. The pandemic took away our opportunities to gather and be together for a while and that is something that we will no longer take for granted. It was made even more special since Joanna’s aunts and uncles from the Philippines were able to fly in for our day.

What did you learn from planning your wedding day?

We learned that it t akes a lot of moving parts to make a wedding happen, so it is important to pick vendors that share your vision. We were lucky to work with vendors that collaborated well with us to make our vision come to life.

What is your best advice for other brides and grooms who are planning their weddings?

The wedding day goes by fast, so don’t just prioritize your guests; think about you. The energy of the bride and groom is contagious. If you and your spouse are having fun, chances are your guests will be too! For all the planning that goes into the day, be sure to make meaningful interactions with your guests and also privately as a newly married couple!

How did you use Lake Bride Magazine to help plan your wedding?

As we were the first among our friends to get married, we needed a lot of inspiration for our wedding. Lake Bride Magazine was not only local and close to home, but it had the aesthetic inspiration we were seeking for our big day. Wedding planning can be overwhelming, but having resources like Lake Bride Magazine can simplify the process and make it more fun.

KALLAN JOSH &

Kallan and Josh’s love story began on Bumble in the fall of 2018, not long after Kallan moved back to Minnesota from Madison, Wisconsin. Josh was living and working in Rochester at the time, so the 100-mile radius on the app was definitely at its limit! As their relationship blossomed, Josh later moved to Bloomington, while Kallan settled in Uptown. Their love story unfolded against the backdrop of various life changes, including moves and career shifts, but through it all, they remained a constant in each other’s lives.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, instead of driving them apart, it brought them even closer together. Kallan jokes that COVID was the best thing that happened to their relationship. With work taking a back seat, they took advantage of the downtime and embarked on multiple long road trips, exploring the beauty of the Badlands, Glacier National Park and Spokane. Their shared passion for sports, particularly NFL football, further strengthened their bond. They made it a new goal to visit a new NFL stadium every year.

In April 2021, against the stunning backdrop of Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Josh popped the question. Their honeymoon continued the adventure, with a road trip from Boise to the majestic Tetons.

This past season, they traveled to Frankfurt, Germany, to see the Kansas City Chiefs play the Miami Dolphins. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing you have a Sunday-afternoon football-watching buddy for the rest of your life!

What was the moment you knew you loved him?

Josh is an extrovert while I am an introvert. The majority of my most memorable experiences over the past 5 years are because of Josh bringing me into his friend group, his spontaneity and his creativity. I knew I loved him when I realized how much more full my life had become with him in it!

How did you know he was the one for you?

After our many adventurous trips together I knew that Josh was someone who could help me break out of my shell and experience life to the fullest! He is always so supportive of my many random ventures — from driving alongside my half marathons so he can give me water, to being my “wedding assistant,” to helping volunteer at the horse barn. He also fits in well with family and friends. When your partner hangs out with your parents without you … there’s no getting rid of him!

What is your best marriage advice that you’ve learned or received so far?

Never expect the other person to know what you’re thinking; that has to be communicated.

Describe any special traditions incorporated into the wedding.

I used my late grandma’s compact case for getting-ready photos. She had gifted this to me for my high school graduation, as it was a gift she had received for her own high school graduation.

Describe any other special touches, details or decor. I knew I wanted my second outfit to be designed by Caroline Hayden because, back in 2013, I wore a custom wedding gown she made for a Minnesota Bride photo shoot. Seeing that come full circle was an incredible memory!

What was your favorite wedding-day memory?

Besides getting married, of course, I was most excited to see my floral arrangements! I went BOLD with the flowers and felt that the red and orange tones were the perfect farewell to summer.

Our first dance song was a Cody Johnson song, “With You I Am.” On one of our first dates, Josh played that song in his car and said, “If I ever get married, I want this to be my first dance song.” I held him to that statement.

What did you learn from planning your wedding?

As a wedding planner myself, I learned that wedding stress is REAL. I feel much more relatable and empathetic to my brides now that I have gone through the stress of planning a wedding myself.

What is your best advice for other brides and grooms who are planning their weddings?

Focus on the BIG things and don’t let social media get the best of you. Food, bar, entertainment, and feeling and looking my best were my priorities. I didn’t obsess over the smaller details, such as stationery, signage or table decor. Slowing down your timeline for the day and creating ample buffer time between events will help you not feel pulled in a million directions throughout the night!

SETTING

UP YOUR RECEPTION WITH A

CRAFTED cocktail

Beer and wine are fine, but if you want to take your reception to the next level, it’s all about the signature craft cocktail. At Tattersall, we’ve developed a wide range of wedding cocktails with flavor and flair your guests won’t forget. And with a little planning, they won’t break the bank. Here are a few tips to get you started.

THE PERFECT PAIR

Choose two drinks, one for you and one for your groom or bride. That way, you can showcase your unique styles and give your guests options.

IT'S ALL IN A NAME

Get creative with the drink names or stick with the originals. Pro tip: either way, make a sign that lists the ingredients so your guests know what to expect.

SHOWCASE THE SEASON

Have at least one option that reflects the temp — think refreshing in summer, warmer in winter. And adding a seasonal ingredient or garnish always goes a long way.

THE FUN PART: TASTE TESTING

Here are two of our go-to wedding drinks that work well together or on their own. They can also be batched ahead of time to make it easier on the bartenders at your reception.

OLD FASHIONED

2 oz. Tattersall Rye

1/4 oz. Tattersall Sour Cherry

1/4 oz. Tattersall Orange Crema

1/4 oz. Simple Syrup (or Maple Syrup)

4 dashes Angostura Bitters

Stir all ingredients with ice until well chilled. Strain into a lowball over fresh ice. Garnish with an expressed orange peel.

FRENCH QUARTER

2 oz. Tattersall Gin

1/2 oz. Tattersall Crème de Fleur

1/2 oz. Lemon Juice - Strained

1/2 oz. Simple Syrup

2 oz. Chilled Sparkling Wine

Shake all ingredients, except sparkling wine, with ice. Strain into a coupe glass. Top with sparkling wine right before it’s served. Garnish with a lemon twist.

CHEERS!

Here’s to making your best day even better with all-natural cocktails you and your guests will love.

Note: To make a larger batch ahead of time, add ¼ oz. of water to the list of ingredients above (to account for dilution from shaking or stirring) and then convert ounces to cups or gallons. Chill the larger batch ahead of time and pour directly over ice.

DITCH THE TUX

Break out of the box and forget a rented tuxedo for your wedding day. Grooms can express their individuality through fashion just as the bride does. Opt for a suit that is tailored and accessorized specifically for you. Lose the jacket and add a custom bow tie or suspenders for a look that is trendy and GQ sexy.

Two tips to keep in mind:

1. Coordinate colors with your bride and overall wedding color scheme

2. Keep the formality of your attire in line with the formality of the event

IT IS SOMETHING YOU CAN DO ALONE.

As in, you do not need input from your bridesmaids or family. It is not an appointment that you need to make with their schedules in consideration so they can attend with you. It is just you and your schedule. The same goes for preparing for your session. Lingerie, hair, and makeup can all be decided by you with the help of your photographer and hair and makeup artist (if you need it). I bet that sounds nice in the flurry of all things wedding.

TREAT YOURSELF.

Having two full time jobs can be pretty stressful. It is probably safe to say that it has been awhile since you have taken a day for just yourself to relax. The best part is you can roll out of bed, get in your car, and head to your session. Let someone else take care of hair and makeup for you; you just need to sit and relax for a couple of hours. Plus you are going to get gorgeous photos of yourself after, and who doesn’t love that!

DATE NIGHT.

Between engagement parties and meetings with vendors, when is the last time you had a night out with just the two of you? You are going to leave your session looking and feeling gorgeous, so it is a great opportunity to take advantage of that and go grab something to eat or go dancing and talk about all the things that you haven’t been able to (also known as “no wedding talk”). Just enjoy each other for the night.

INCORPORATE DETAILS FROM YOUR WEDDING INTO YOUR SESSION.

It is the perfect excuse to wear your veil or wedding shoes. You can even bring in your wedding dress for your session. Your wedding photographer probably will not be capturing the details of you getting into your dress, and you probably do not want to be posed in a boudoir fashion in front of your mom, mother-in-law, and all of your closest girlfriends. Getting into your wedding dress can look ultra sultry. At your boudoir session, you can actually slow down, be posed correctly, and get some amazing intimate images of it, all without an audience. Then you can do another set with your veil, wedding shoes, and if you are wearing lingerie on your wedding night, why not be photographed in it!

IT IS JUST AS MUCH FOR YOU.

There is something about becoming a bride that makes you hard on yourself and thinking of all the things that you need or want to change about yourself. As mentioned already, you will leave your session looking and feeling gorgeous and you get beautiful photos of yourself. That right there is going to give you an amazing confidence boost. You will go into your wedding day seeing what everyone already sees in you. You are beautiful, and now that you know that, you will glow even more on your wedding day! No changes necessary.

Scheduling a boudoir session can be scary! But it is just like going to the gym. Getting there is most of the battle. Once you get there, you will be fine. In fact, you will be better than fine, because if you choose the right boudoir photographer, you will leave your session feeling completely unstoppable and ready to take on the world. If you still are not sure and doubting yourself, below are five more reasons that you should consider a boudoir session for yourself (and your fiancé).

THE PERKS OF PLANNING OFF-PEAK

There are big advantages to planning your wedding during the off-peak months. Industry statistics show over 80% of couples get married between the months of May and October. If you choose a date outside of those months you could save big. Consider the following benefits when selecting your wedding date.

REDUCED PRICES

The law of supply and demand rules. Venues and vendors are slow during the off-peak months. That means lower prices and a willingness to negotiate. The financial advantages of planning outside peak wedding months can be significant, saving you up to 30%.

Bonus: Airfares and hotel prices are typically lower during slow season as well, which creates cost savings for your out-of-town guests that they are sure to appreciate.

INCREASED ATTENDANCE

It is likely that your friends and family receive numerous wedding invitations during the peak months. Competing with other weddings and busy personal schedules means there will be people unable to attend. During the colder months your guests will look forward to the celebration!

AVAILABILITY

The hot venues, photographers, florists, and other vendors tend to book early. You have a better chance of assembling your wedding dream team, and at a lower price, if you plan during their off season.

NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE SEASON

Vibrant fall colors and the rustle of fallen leaves beneath your feet create an air of nostalgia and are often still present during the early weeks of November.

Later in the season, a blanket of freshly fallen snow and the crackle of a warm fire can create a fairytale backdrop for a romantic wedding day.

Bottom line: you can’t predict the weather. A July wedding may be forced indoors due to rain and a November afternoon could be full of sunshine. Weigh all the factors when selecting your date to determine what works best for you.

UNIQUE OPTIONS

If you have your heart set on a summer or early fall wedding but still want the benefits of planning off-peak, consider a Friday night soirée or a Sunday morning brunch. Saturday nights are prime but vendors are often eager to fill their other weekend days.

If most of your guests are local, Friday night weddings are great. An evening ceremony is romantic, sophisticated, and gives you all day to enjoy the preparations.

Sunday mornings are a great option for an intimate ceremony followed by a casual brunch. This fresh take on your wedding day will be a welcome new experience for your guests. Everyone loves a great brunch. Bacon. Mimosas. Donuts. Need we say more?!

FAUX FUR

Whether it’s a family heirloom or glam faux design, an o -theshoulder fur wrap will add vintage glam to your look without hiding too much of your gorgeous dress.

SOMETHING SALTY

is the ultimate

food, and Molly

build a welcome basket

Bringing friends and family together from across the country for the big day is special… but it often means long travel days and expensive arrangements. A welcome basket is a great way to say ‘thank you’ in style.

SOMETHING TO REMIND THEM OF YOU

All of your guests know that you are the perfect match, so send them home with a reminder that they will actually use. True Hue is as Minnesotan as it gets, and o ers chic, modern packaging. We love the North Collection Candle Tin in Stargazing ($12) and the ‘Perfect Match’ glass bottle standard tip matches ($8) for a gift they are sure to enjoy. Yes, we know. Who wants a cookie that’s “healthy?” Well, you do. And so will your guests… trust us, we go through way more Kakookies at the Lake + Co. o ces than we’d like to admit. Kakookies Dark Chocolate Cranberry ($2) is the perfect blend of sweetness and ‘fill you up’ ingredients. Just what anyone needs to get through the 3pm push. It even works perfectly as a breakfast on the go.

Follow these steps and you are on your way to creating a gift that is personal to you and your event.

SOMETHING SWEET

SOMETHING TO DRINK

While water is always a good option, consider something out of the box - they can get water anywhere! Our newest obsession is Superior Switchel in Honey Cinnamon Kick ($40 for a 12-pack). What’s switchel you ask? Switchel is a 17th century thirst quencher said to have been used by sailors and farmers as a way to overcome harsh winters and rehydrate during blistering summers. We love this flavor that features cinnamon combined with apple cider vinegar and honey to create a cider-like, ginger boost. Great cold – or hot on chilly nights – and even better, in our opinion, enjoyed as a drink mixer. USDA Organic and good for dehydration too!

WRITE A NOTE

Welcome your guests to your wedding weekend and give them important timing or itinerary info (think bus departure times, ceremony time, etc.). A printed welcome note will do for most weddings, but depending on the size of the event or number of out of town guests, a hand written personal note or signature always takes it to the next level. Work with your invitation designer to make it look and feel like the other elements of your event. Don’t have a designer yet? Be sure to check out Ginger P Designs, shown here.

If you’re putting items into the box that have personal meaning to you, consider letting your guests know about that! (ex: chocolate chip cookies baked using your grandmother’s secret recipe or a favorite treat from your childhood)

CHOOSE YOUR VESSEL

It can be a bag, a box, a basket… you name it. But what if it can be a gift in itself? We fell in love with these amazing storage bins from Shaggy Baggy ($38), made locally in St. Paul, MN with sustainable processes and materials. PIPER BEN &

Ben and Piper are the modern love story. They meet on Hinge in 2019 and through a series of intense family events on both sides ended up quarantining together. The more time they spent together, the more in love they fell. It was a whirlwind of adventure and chaos from the jump — graduate school for Ben, launched two businesses as a team and continue to expand them, moved across the country to start making wine in Oregon. Through all the trials and tribulations that come with big life changes, they grew more and more in love, finding balance and strength through their relationship. They saw that adversity only made them more committed and more in love.

What was the moment you knew you loved him/her?

Piper: I fell in love with him over and over. But the day I knew he was the one was on our first bike ride a few months into us hanging out. We ended up riding farther and longer than I had ever ridden because we were enjoying each other’s company. The time flew by!

Ben: It was literally the first time I saw her at a bar in Park City, Utah. I will remember every detail of that night for the rest of my life.

How did you know he/she was the one for you?

Piper: When he decided to fully quarantine away from his friends and family at the beginning of the pandemic to be with my family when my family was going through some health issues. He was willing to do whatever it took to be there for me and support me.

Ben: I knew right away, but it was solidified when she cared for me after I broke my leg in a gnarly mountain-biking accident early in our relationship. She dropped everything to care for me!

What is your best marriage advice that you’ve learned or received so far?

Piper: “Always celebrate each other and never forget the feeling on the day of your wedding.”

Ben: “Say I love you every day!”

Please describe any special traditions incorporated into the wedding.

Piper arrived at the wedding in a 1925 Goodhew Hawkins 33-foot laker wooden boat that was built on the shores of, and lived in the Walgreen family camp on, Lake Winnipesaukee. When it joined the Underbrink family, it was renamed Genevieve after my late grandmother. It was a tribute to Grandma Pauline for the bride to ride in her namesake boat with her father to the wedding. And the dock was the aisle!

Please describe any other special touches, details or decor of interest?

The reception/dinner was held in the family boathouse surrounded by antique restored boats from various decades. The band that played was originally founded by Piper’s mother in 1984 in Minneapolis and she sang the bride and groom’s first dance song, as well as the song for the father/daughter dance.

What was your favorite wedding day memory?

Piper: I think the best part for me was twofold: 1. The vows and, honestly, the entire ceremony. The boat ride, the dress, seeing my husband and hearing the vows all finished with a horn band playing songs from the hilltop by the lake. It was surreal to have my favorite people in my favorite place! Also, having my mother sing my father/daughter dance song was a memory I will cherish forever.

Ben: For me it was seeing Piper come up on the boat and hearing everyone cheer for her.

What did you learn from planning your wedding?

Piper: That everyone will have fun no matter what. I also learned after the wedding that taking special care with the seating chart really makes a difference. People were so thankful for sitting next to new people that they had things in common with. It was so fun to see new friendships grow!

Ben: That you can really pack a lot into a short weekend; we are capable of more than we thought.

What is your best advice for other brides and grooms who are planning their weddings?

Get a killer wedding planner. It is worth everything to have someone who is the point person. They are the best for organizing and communicating with all the vendors, as well as managing people on the day. This is critical so that the bride and groom can enjoy and focus on each other. Kendra Johnson was instrumental in creating the best experience and transforming a garage into a wedding fairytale land. Plus, they are experts in not only management but also the ins and outs of things you tend to forget. For example, tipping (how much, when, etc.), flow of the event, timing and the small tasks (gifting, outfit changes, etc.). They also know everyone in their area. If you choose to get married somewhere you don’t live, they can meet with all the vendors and make sure they understand the assignment and have access to the venue.

When Dreams Take Root

Anna & Austin’s Love Story Blooms at Alpha & Omega Farm

Some love stories begin with grand gestures and sweeping romance. Others start with a quiet “click” that changes everything. For Anna and Austin, their journey to forever began not once, but twice—first as high school friends, then as soulmates who found their way back to each other three years after graduation.

“We just clicked instantly,” Anna reflects, describing that magical moment in 2018 when friendship transformed into something deeper. Their first date perfectly captured the essence of their relationship: authentic, adventurous, and rooted in shared moments of simple beauty. Austin picked her up early for an evening of bowfishing, but first they watched the sunset paint the sky while loons called across the water. As twilight settled around them, he helped her shoot her first fish—a moment that would become a treasured memory in their love story.

What sealed the deal for Anna wasn’t just Austin’s kindness toward her, but watching him interact with his niece and nephews. “Seeing him with them was the best part,” she says, recognizing the heart of a man who would one day be an amazing father to their own little family. Austin’s willingness to help anyone, his incredible work ethic, and his knack for fixing small motors might seem like practical qualities, but to Anna, they represent something deeper—a partner who shows love through action and dedication.

Their relationship has been built on shared adventures and cherished traditions. Winter weekends find them snowmobiling through Minnesota’s pristine landscapes, while summer brings car shows that have become annual pilgrimages. The Osceola Wheels and Wings show, Frankensteiners car show in Cambridge, Minnesota and the Minnesota State Fair aren’t just events on their calendar, they’re the threads that weave their story together, year after year.

But perhaps the most meaningful thread in their tapestry is their weekly Thursday night ritual at Alpha & Omega Farm. “We love the smalltown homey feel that it creates,” Anna explains, describing how this countryside haven became their sanctuary. “The pizza is amazing, and our daughter loves the animals.”

Every Thursday, they make their way to the farm, eager to try whatever new pizza creation awaits them that week. But the real magic happens watching their daughter pet the animals and run freely through the farm. These moments—simple, unhurried, and filled with laughter—perfectly capture what Anna and Austin value most: authentic connection, family time, and the kind of relaxed joy that can only be found in wide open spaces.

When it came time to choose a wedding venue, the decision was effortless. Alpha & Omega Farm wasn’t just a beautiful location; it was already woven into the fabric of their love story. “We love that we can add this to the list of things we love about the farm,” Anna shares, understanding that celebrating their wedding at a place that’s already part of their story adds layers of meaning to their special day.

The farm’s blend of rustic charm and natural beauty creates the perfect backdrop for couples who want something beyond the conventional. Anna and Austin’s vision for their wedding day reflects their relationship perfectly—surrounded by family who care about them and their own little family, celebrating in a place that feels like home. “I hope it shows how much we love each other and love to be surrounded by family,” Anna says about her wedding day dreams.

At Alpha & Omega Farm, their concept shoot transformed into something real and magical. The rolling Minnesota pastures, the gentle hum of farm life, and the charming Summer Huis provided the perfect setting for a couple whose love story is rooted in authenticity and simple pleasures. String lights twinkled against the twilight sky as they exchanged vows, creating that rare blend of natural beauty and practical charm that makes this venue so special.

Their wedding celebration featured the farm’s famous wood-fired pizzas, creating a shared experience that felt both special and comfortably familiar—much like their relationship itself. As evening fell and the celebration continued, even the most practical relatives found themselves dancing barefoot under the stars, caught up in the magic of a love story that began with a click and bloomed into forever.

Anna and Austin’s journey from high school friends to soulmates to a family of their own (including beloved dog Sadie and cat Oliver) proves that the best love stories aren’t always the loudest ones. Sometimes they’re the quiet ones that take root slowly, nurtured by Thursday night pizza dates, sunset bowfishing adventures, and the simple joy of watching your daughter chase farm animals while the person you love most in the world stands beside you, ready to help with whatever comes next.

At Alpha & Omega Farm, where love blooms in the countryside, some couples discover that the most extraordinary celebrations happen in the most beautifully ordinary places—where memories take root and grow for a lifetime.

"Alpha & Omega Farm wasn't just a beautiful location; it was already woven into the fabric of their love story."

MEN'S

Ihave a running theory: when you walk into a room full of people the first two things you notice are the prettiest girl and the best dressed guy - usually in that order. But what truly defines “best dressed?” Allow me to quote the great G.K. Chesterton: "Fashions have an extraordinary way of being first omnipresent and oppressive and then suddenly blank and forgotten.”

Today’s world of fashion is just as dizzying and confusing as ever, but we do appear to be in something of a renaissance for the long-lost art of fine men’s clothing, and it’s likely here to stay. However, some understanding is needed in order to fully appreciate this renaissance.

“Fashions” (meaning trends) are just like humans - they die. A man’s objective in his dress should be to transcend. Case in point: where are bell bottoms? And how’d those skinny jeans work out for you? I rest my case. So, before continuing, take a moment and google “Steve McQueen style,” then “Robert Redford style,” then “Paul Newman style.” Notice anything? Quite a few of those photos are not as dated as you’d imagine - pea coats with the collar up, denim shirts, cardigans, sweatshirts. These looks never die - they are timeless, they transcend trends. These guys pulled off the timeless fashion look with great aplomb.

Perhaps it bears repeating that an "empty suit" is still an empty suit. Fellas, how you look matters - there’s no getting around it, but if there’s nothing behind the well-dressed facade, then you’re missing the point altogether. History has proven that the inside man should be even better than the outside man, otherwise you’re only delaying the disappointment of others by a few minutes. When your timeless fashion sense draws them in, your personality better keep them there! Alas, we’ll have to save those philosophical musings for another day, for on this day, we must discuss the “do’s” and “don’ts” of a very common and dressy affair - the wedding. You’ll likely only ever attend your own wedding once in your life, so you better get that right, but you’ll very likely attend numerous weddings of your friends or your wife’s/girlfriend’s/partner’s friends. This is where we shall focus our attention. We men are a simple type, “Give me the rules and etiquette and let me be on my way!” Very well then, here they are:

STYLE DO

Dress nice. The rule for women of “don’t wear white to a wedding” does not apply to men in the sense that you need to somehow dress less nice than the groom. More specifically, procure for yourself a good, tailored suit. We will get into color pallets another time, so for now it will suffice to say that nearly every man looks good in navy blue and gray. These should be standards in your closet. Navy for your celebratory affairs (weddings, dates) and gray for your business meetings. You will need to know your suit jacket size in order to begin the process of proper suit wearing - they do not come in small, medium and large - a custom suit, tailored to your exact body type (cause really, is S, M, L & XL really the breadth of the human body?) is your best bet for looking great and getting the most life out of your suit.

Jeromy is an actor, speaker, songwriter, and style consultant based out of the Twin Cities. He’s been married for over 16 years to his only girlfriend and they have three sons, Wyatt (9), Wilder (6), and Wren (2). He can be reached at jeromy.darling@jhilburnpartner.com or by visiting his custom menswear site at www.style.asafeman.com

Wear worn out jeans. Unless this particular wedding is one of those “wear whatever you want, we just want to have fun” kind of weddings (I have been to a few of those, they are wonderful). A pair of dark jeans however can look fantastic.

DOn't DO

Wear sneakers. Not your knock around, beat up, vinyl Nike shoes, but nice, clean white leather sneakers. You will be on your feet for a long time and dress shoes don’t often provide the comfort and breathability that you’ll find in a good pair of tennis shoes. They also look amazing with a suit.

DOn't DO

Wear snakeskin boots. No one thinks it’s clever. It makes them think of snakes. Who wants to think about a snake? Furthermore, do you want people to see you and instantly think of a snake? I should hope not.

Embrace some color. Not a Hawaiian shirt (I left that out of the “don’t" column because I THINK that’s pretty obvious), but some color is nice. Avoid strong colors; a bright green or red jacket for instance, as these will draw the wrong kind of attention, but SOME colors at a wedding are perfectly appropriate.

DOn't

Wear a black tux. You’re not in the wedding, bro. While every man should also have a good black suit for the occasional, obligatory black tie affair, a wedding is not one of them.

And there we have it! There is of course more, but this is a good starting point. I’ll include a few outfit grids to get your fashion sense tingling. Until next time

The wedding season is ramping up as the temperatures rise, and newlyweds are settling into marriage, including managing their finances as a pair. Couples should waste no time addressing how they will handle money issues as spouses and financial partners.

“Developing a financial plan can often take a backseat to the excitement of a wedding,” says Paul Means, RiverWood Bank CEO. “But it’s important to remember that this is not only a marriage of hearts but also a marriage of finances.” To help couples start their journey on strong financial footing, here are some post-wedding money mistakes to be aware of:

AVOIDING THE MONEY TALK

Discussing your finances can be a bit uncomfortable for many couples, but those who tackle it head on will be better for it. Understand your partner’s financial goals and spending habits. While you may have different answers, this conversation can help you develop an approach to money management that works for both of you.

NOT SETTING A BUDGET

A mistake many couples make is not establishing a budget early on. After assessing your finances as a pair, determine how you’ll spend your money each month. Are there certain expenses that you should be cutting back on and others you should be saving up for? Coming to an agreement on these things and setting a budget will be beneficial for your financial health and your relationship. There are many online tools that can be used to build and monitor a budget.

NOT HAVING A PLAN FOR YOUR ACCOUNTS

There is no "right" way to manage your accounts. Couples can choose to have exclusively joint accounts, a joint account as well as separate accounts for saving or personal spending, or keep things entirely divided. Discuss your preferences together and decide what makes you both the most comfortable. If you aren’t sure what your options are talk to a local banker.

FAILING TO SET UP AN EMERGENCY FUND

Life is full of surprises and unfortunately some of these surprises can be expensive. Having an emergency fund will help you avoid precarious financial situations should something come up. It’s important that you decide together how you’ll set aside the money.

NOT ESTABLISHING A MINIMUM COST FOR DISCUSSING BIG EXPENSES

While not all purchases demand a conversation, more expensive ones that impact the family budget should. Determine what that threshold is as a couple. For any expenses above that cost, you both should be in agreement on whether it’s a necessary purchase.

FORGETTING TO UPDATE YOUR BENEFICIARIES

Now that you’ve officially tied the knot, you should likely identify your spouse as the person who will receive the benefits of your will, life insurance policy, and financial accounts like your 401(k), checking, and savings. Don’t make the mistake of waiting for an emergency to arise to handle this.

Cannon Beach

PACIFIC NORTHWEST:

Soothing spas and sounds of rain, waterfalls, beach walks, and breathtaking views of the mountains and ocean.

Vancouver Island (British Columbia) – Accessible by ferry, the “Island of the Spas” is home to many “must visit” places. One of those in Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, is the Hotel Grand Pacific, adjacent the Legislature and Parliament Buildings and overlooking the Inner Harbour. Stunning views from the upper floors are as appreciated as the lovely walks at ground level along the harbour’s sea wall. The hotel’s Pacific Restaurant and Lounge are superb but, if you’re out exploring, the casual greatness of the Flying Otter Grill and Red Fish Blue Fish (in an up-cycled cargo container) are only a 5-minute walk away. A bit further away, 90 miles to be exact, Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort is another Vancouver Island must stay (and play) paradise featuring ocean view rooms, Canada’s #1 ranked Grotto Spa, the Endless Tapas Experience at The Treetop, 22 acres of forest, two miles of sandy beach, and the warmest ocean swimming waters in Canada. Seriously.

Anchorage (Alaska) – Glamorous Camping is known as “glamping” around the world. In Canada many refer to it as “Orca Island Cabining.” That’s how dramatic and defining the experience is in Seward, at Dennis and Susan Swiderski’s Orca Island Cabins. Their stylish yurts complement some of the most naturally intimate views and settings, with comfortable beds, fully-equipped kitchens, running water, and private decks. Kayak, fish, hike, whale watch, or just sit back and relax. It’s safe to say you’ve never experienced anything like this before, and probably will want to again.

Cannon Beach (Oregon) – There’s “beachfront” and then there’s “on the beach” like the New England-style Stephanie Inn, a boutique hotel in northern Oregon with subtle luxuries, carefully crafted ambience, and ocean or mountainview rooms and suites near the famous Haystack Rock. With a focus on romance and superior service, every room has a fireplace and Jacuzzi tub. They even give you lanterns for nighttime beach walks. The explosion of colors at sunset complement the explosion of flavors in Chef Bedard’s restaurant, but great as your dinner might be, the breakfasts here are even more legendary. (Example: Lemon curd-stuffed French toast with Grande Marnier strawberries and bacon.)

HAWAII:

Warm welcomes and weather with wafting palm trees and sunset buffets set to serenades of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole.

Hawaii – Locals call it Hawaii. The rest of us refer to it as “The Big Island.” Whatever you call it, you’ll also call it “Awesome!” The popular Kona Coast is as stunning as seaside strips get, and while loaded with great hotels, few pack the diverse aquatic amenities of the Hilton Waikoloa Village. The resort features a private lagoon with sea turtles, a water park, and so many pools and hot tubs there’s no need for a beach. But, don’t worry, they’ve got that too, connecting the fine dining at Kamuela Provision Company to the fabulous and friendly Lava Lava Beach Club a casual, sandy stroll away. Make reservations at the Legends of Hawaii Luau, take a Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour around the island, and/or set sail on a sunset catamaran cruise where you might catch a whale but will have a whale of a good time.

Lanai – If you believe you get what you pay for, and that the more you have to work for something the more rewarding the realization of it is, you’ll be greatly compensated upon arrival at The Four Seasons Lanai. It takes a bit of aerial island hopping to get there, or a boat from Maui, but the entire experience is literally everything you would ever dream or want a Hawaiian vacation to be. Beachfront with waterfall pools and a spa, a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, sandy expanses as far as the eye can see, crystal-clear water, waves, palm trees, and food at Nobu Lanai that… well… transcends the word “food.” Book an ocean-view suite and prepare yourself for this reality—“Of anywhere I’ve been in the United States, this is the place I most want to return.”

Maui – Hotel Wailea, Relais & Chateaux is consistently considered the island’s most romantic hotel—an all-suite, adults-only resort with incredible ocean views throughout the entire 15-acre property. The intimate 5-star enclave has only 72 rooms, making crowds a non-factor and guaranteeing serenity with tropical gardens, waterfalls, and perfect panoramic views. Go the extra romantic mile with a 7-course private dinner at The Treehouse, under a canopy of mangos and avocados, for an extra-unforgettable night. Many who hope to elope consider the Grand Wailea Maui, A Waldorf Astoria Resort 1.5 miles up the beach with a private chapel down by the water, bridges, pools, and waterfalls all over, and infinite ocean-view rooms on a more modest budget. Whatever brings you to the Grand Wailea, do not leave there without at least one sunset dinner at Humuhumunukunukuapua’a—a fine-dining hot spot with Polynesian thatched roofs and killer desserts. And if you venture off property, there’s always a great vibe and menu at Nalu’s South Shore Grill.

CARIBBEAN & MEXICO:

Easy international escapes to tropical paradises with all-inclusive, adults-only, and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

The Bahamas – The Abaco Club on Winding Bay is a plush, private resort with an assortment of lodges perched on cliffs around a crystal-clear cove, allowing nonmember guests to visit just once (knowing full well you’ll pay most anything to come back). With an award-winning golf course, spa, and restaurant, a couldn’t-be-friendlier staff, a spectacular beach and so many surrounding islands to hop around on, there are few places on earth you’ll feel more pampered and at peace.

Puerto Rico – El Conquistador is a Waldorf Astoria Resort overlooking Las Croabas and the British Virgin Islands an hour east of San Juan. With a variety of dining options, infinite infinity pools, a water park, spa, Arthur Hills golf course, a unique funicular down to the marina, and even its own private island where part of “Pirates of the Caribbean” was filmed, it’s worth splurging on an ocean view room and taking a nighttime kayak excursion to the Bioluminescent Bay in Fajardo. (Note: Major expansion underway. Check renovations status before booking.)

Cancun – A favorite getaway for elopers and honeymooners alike, the all-inclusive Hard Rock Riviera Maya is a unique property for Mexico, as private and secure as a public resort gets, with a lovely waterfront chapel for destination weddings, clean beach coves, tons of pools, an adults-only side, and a separate family section with an incredible new water park. The food variety and quality are major highlights here, and lucky couples score with a limited, swanky, ocean-view, Jacuzzi-rooftop suite. (Note: This is Stays + Plays Travel Agency’s most booked global resort for both couples and families.)

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
Fairmont Banff Springs

CANADIAN ROCKIES:

North American heaven with unbelievable beauty, opulent castle lodging, majestic mountains, and crystal-clear glacial lakes, all in Alberta, accessible through Calgary.

Banff – The Fairmont Banff Springs—Canada’s “Castle in the Rockies”—is a year-round luxury resort towering over the lovely alpine town of Banff, with 27-holes of Stanley Thompson golf, an award-winning Willow Stream Spa, panoramic room views, a great pool deck, and several signature restaurants not far from the famous Gondola and Upper Hot Springs. Catering to masses of ski-lovers in winter and messes of golf-lovers in summer, with tons more courses in nearby Canmore and Kananaskis, expect Banff to blow you away… Every. Single. Day.

Lake Louise – Only 39 miles north of the Fairmont Banff Springs, straight up the stunning Trans-Canada Highway 1, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is otherworldly in its own right, surrounded by mountains, the Victoria Glacier, and an almost indescribable emerald lake. Another paradise for the outdoor enthusiast, boaters motor about fishing, rafting, and kayaking, while hikers climb and photographers of all skill levels wear out their fingers. The kind of place even superlatives can’t scratch the surface of.

Jasper – Speaking of superlatives, another 150 miles north of Lake Louise, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is less “castle” and more “cabin,” but Luxurious Signature Cabins at that. The 700-acre, year-round resort is tucked into Jasper National Park and encircled by magnificent mountain peaks, hugging the pristine shoreline of Lac Beauvert. With another epic Stanley Thompson golf course, the Fairmont Spa, and outdoor activities galore, you’d be hard pressed to find a more perfectly serene and remote getaway location. As an added bonus, the Fairmont JPL is only 28 miles from the knock-your-socks-off beauty of Maligne Lake, home to Reader’s Digest’s “Best Boat Cruise in Canada.” Fairmont is so dominant in Canada’s luxury resort department it’s almost… well… unfair.

MAINLAND USA:

Fly or drive to the coast with the most allure to you, seeking tree-lined cliffs, skyline views, wining, fine dining, and/or lighthouse overnighting.

Big Sur (California) – If you’ve ever wanted to own a 39-room house on a cliff that’s great. Same here. You can’t own The Post Ranch Inn but you can pretend you do for a few days, and what memorable days those will be. Every reservation includes a daily gourmet breakfast at Sierra Mar and the resort features two heated infinity spas, a heated swimming pool, and Pacific views so pretty you just might cry (especially at sunset). For a completely different but equally memorable, and more budget-friendly, cliff-side experience, Treebones is a premier glamping resort 35 miles south of the Post Ranch Inn, with plush yurts providing full and partial Pacific vistas, Adirondack patios, a Sushi Bar, and the stellar “redefined campfire cuisine” of Wild Coast Restaurant.

Boothbay Harbor (Maine) – Honeymoon with the stars, across the map, in the far northeast, where loving lobster is essentially law, at The Inn at Cuckolds Lighthouse. Exactly as it sounds, a historic, renovated lighthouse you can sleep in, this award-winning, luxury bed and breakfast is on a small Atlantic island, accessible only by boat, with just two rooms—essentially your own private island for your stay. Imagine the brilliance of the stars from out there, wrapped up together by the fire, with no one around to bother you. How much more “once-in-a-lifetime” can it get? #notmuch Don’t want to stay on an island? Okay. That isn’t really considered “your loss” at The Topside Inn, only six miles away. Truly one of the more remarkable and awarded lodging experiences in all of America, “The Inn on the Hill” is a seasonal stay (May – October) perched on four beautiful acres high over the Atlantic, with stunning views in every direction from sunrise to sunset of islands, lighthouses, and even the line out the door at Red’s Eats in Wiscasset (almost).

New York City (New York) – The 300-square mile city area is home to 8.5 million people and, as a result, is the most densely populated metropolis in America. With so much to do you can’t do it all, my “High Five” would be a Broadway show, a walk around Central Park, visits to the Statue of Liberty, and One World Observatory - The 9/11 Memorial, and—as the pinnacle experience—a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge to share a Grimaldi’s pizza in the park near the famous Jane’s Carousel, while watching the sun set behind the Manhattan skyline. That experience can best be set up with a stay at the luxurious 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge at Pier 1, overlooking the East River, a few hundred yards from the bridge, with a bar and plunge pool at Harriet’s Rooftop & Lounge and the sensational Bamford Haybarn Spa to boot. For those intent on proposing, I propose you intentionally schedule a dinner date at The River Café under the Brooklyn Bridge to properly pair your “wow” and “yes” moments.

Branson (Missouri) – The Midwest is perhaps a bit underrepresented on this list. Mackinac Island and Kohler certainly merit consideration for their incredible romantic values. But Branson has something neither of those great places has, something none of the places on this list can claim—THE most picturesque non-coastal wedding chapel in America. Situated at Top of the Rock, a peak 10 miles south of Branson, and amenity of Johnny Morris’ fabulous Big Cedar Lodge Resort, the threestory Chapel of the Ozarks features jaw-to-floor views out its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Table Rock Lake. Big Cedar Lodge is actually home to three wedding chapels, bills itself as “America’s Premier Wedding Resort,” and doesn’t do bad for itself in any other category with five world-class golf courses (when Tiger Woods debuts his course next year), waterfalls, wooden bridges, award-winning restaurants, the Cedar Creek Spa, Fun Mountain, and the “must tour” 10,000-acre Dogwood Canyon Nature Park.

The only thing better than falling in love is having someone fall in love with you, and the only thing better than falling in love with a place you visit is having the one you love there to share the place with you. Whether you plan to wed, have just been married, or hope to rejuvenate your marriage in a memorable way, pick a paradise off this list, pack your bags, and pursue it. Don’t delay! Book it today!

Destination: Adventure

Be prepared. It’s good advice, in marriage and in life (it is the motto of the Boy Scouts after all!). The idea is that you are always in a state of readiness, in mind and body. While I (obviously) was not a Boy Scout, I do strive to be ready for what life throws at me in any scenario. You’ve just spent months preparing for the big ‘I do’s,’ now let’s get you prepared for your next big thing... the honeymoon. While relaxation is absolutely needed and deserved, we believe adventure should be a big part of that first trip as husband and wife and having smart gear on hand is half the battle. Ready, set, be prepared…

Nanoloft Puffy Blanket - Rumpl - $149.00

My top pick for staying cozy, this blanket is super light and easy to clip onto my backpack (or around my shoulders) during an outdoor adventure. Admittedly I can also be found snuggling up with it while reading a book by the fire... or on the airplane.

High Sierra Shirts / High Water Shirt - California Cowboystarting at $135.00

These shirts take being prepared to a whole new level. If your adventure is bringing you to colder temps, the High Sierra is your answer. This après ski flannel shirt has a cozy thermal lining. Headed to warmer waters?

The High Water shirt has short sleeves, tropical prints, and a waterabsorbent, terry-cloth lining. The best part - both styles feature a beer pocket, zippered dry pocket, and sunglasses loop. Oh... and you get a bottle opener and koozie with your shirt. Cheers to that!

Radium Sunglasses - Zeal Optics - $149.00

While I love when the sun helps to charge my gear and warm my back, I hate getting caught in the glare unprepared. Zeal Optics sunglasses are my favorite pick. They are super light and durable, and they are made from plants so they’re a conscious choice too. Did I mention fashionable?

While we don’t want disasters on the mind in times of celebration, it’s still a realistic part of always being prepared. Enter the world's first fully integrated 72-hour survival system. Designed to guide you safely through any unexpected emergency, the Seventy2 has everything you need to turn a potential disaster into a minor inconvenience. Keep it in your trunk, or bring it on your next adventure, and ensure that you are prepared for anything.

Nomad 5 Solar Panel Kit - Goal Zero - $79.95

There is no denying that we rely on our electronics, even when we are out in nature. Solar power is the answer and the Nomad Kit has everything you need to charge your iPhone so you can stay connected and get that perfect picture.

No. 6 Knife - Opinel - $16.00

I’m not sure if he was a Boy Scout, but my grandpa always had a knife in his pocket, and it often came in very handy. This one is the smallest model from Opinel and features the Virobloc safety ring. It easily fits in a pocket or bag and always delivers when needed. I also love that it comes in colors and patterns that give it a unique, even fashionable, spin.

The Seventy2 Survival System - Unchartered Supply Company - $349.99
