El mes de octubre es una época especial en la que convergen dos festividades: la Herencia Hispana y Halloween. En este mes, honramos la rica cultura y legado de las comunidades hispanohablantes en Estados Unidos, recordando sus contribuciones a la sociedad, arte, gastronomía y más.

Mientras celebramos esta herencia, también nos preparamos para Halloween, una festividad llena de misterio y diversión. Halloween nos invita a dejar volar nuestra imaginación, disfrazarnos y disfrutar. Es un momento para compartir historias de fantasmas, asustarnos de manera amistosa y disfrutar de la magia de la noche de forma segura.

En esta edición les extendemos la invitación para ver la película "Simón", que ilustra el doloroso éxodo venezolano, subrayando las realidades de nuestra sociedad. Así mismo encontrarán actividades para disfrutar con sus niños y animales durante el día de Halloween.

The month of October is a special time when two celebrations converge: Hispanic Heritage Month and Halloween. During this month, we honor the rich culture and legacy of Spanish-speaking communities in the United States, remembering their contributions to society, art, gastronomy, and more.

As we celebrate this heritage, we also prepare for Halloween, a festival full of mystery and fun. Halloween invites us to let our imagination soar, dress up, and enjoy. It's a time to share ghost stories, be friendly scared, and savor the magic of the night safely.

In this edition, we extend the invitation to watch the movie "Simón," which illustrates the painful Venezuelan exodus, emphasizing the realities of our society. You will also find activities to enjoy with your children and pets during Halloween day.

"El debut cinematográfico del director venezolano Diego Vicentini, titulado "Simón", nos sumerge en un viaje emocional y político a través de la vida de un líder estudiantil que enfrenta la brutalidad de un régimen opresivo. Tras sufrir detención y tortura, busca asilo político en Miami. Pero... pedir asilo significa revivir los crudos eventos que lo hicieron salir de Venezuela. Y Simón no está preparado para reabrir esa herida. Simón tendrá que confrontar su propia rabia, su propia culpa y su propia tristreza" (Obtenido de www.simonmovie.com).

Los pilares de esta emotiva película son los productores principales del proyecto: Jorge Antonio González, Marcel Rasquin y Diego Vicentini. Vicentini, además de dirigir, es el escritor.

La gira promocional de "Simón" ha tenido como objetivo dar a conocer al mundo la existencia de esta realidad fuerte y triste. Comenzó en Miami y continuó en Madrid, donde la premier atrajo a más de 1090 personas, marcando un hito como la película venezolana con mayor asistencia en la historia de España.

"Simón" aborda una realidad política y social crítica basada en los eventos de 2017. Sorprendentemente, el régimen autorizó su exhibición en Venezuela, aunque con una advertencia en el certificado de autorización que sugiere que la película "podría violar la ley contra el odio".

El recorrido de la película en festivales inició con su debut en el Festival de Cine de Florida y en el Dallas International Film Festival, donde fue galardonada por la audiencia como la mejor película internacional. No obstante, su reconocimiento alcanzó su punto álgido en el Festival del Cine Venezolano de Mérida, donde recibió múltiples distinciones, abarcando Mejor Película, entre otras. Asimismo, fue seleccionada para representar a Venezuela en los renombrados Premios Goya y en el New York Latino Film Festival.

A escasos días del estreno en Venezuela, fijado para el 7 de septiembre, surgió una noticia que causó revuelo: un abogado al parecer identificado con el movimiento chavista un había presentado una denuncia ante la fiscalía contra "Simón", alegando que la película promovía el terrorismo y la violencia. Sin embargo, esta noticia no se tradujo en una demanda oficial presentada ante los realizadores. A pesar de este episodio, la película se estrenó como estaba planeado obteniendo un rotundo éxito al ser vista por más de 27.000 personas. Este logro la posiciona como la película venezolana más vista en el año 2023.

The promotional tour of "Simón" has aimed to make the world aware of the existence of this harsh and sad reality. It began in Miami and continued in Madrid, where the premiere drew in over 1,090 people, marking a milestone as the Venezuelan film with the highest attendance in the history of Spain.

"Simón" tackles a critical political and social reality based on the events of 2017. Surprisingly, the regime authorized its exhibition in Venezuela, albeit with a

warning in the authorization certificate suggesting that the film "might violate the law against hate."

The film's festival journey commenced with its debut at the Florida Film Festival and the Dallas International Film Festival, where it was acclaimed by the audience as the best international film. Orígenes, Historia y Significado de "Trick or Treat"

Halloween, la festividad que se celebra el 31 de octubre, es una de las festividades más populares y reconocibles en todo el mundo. Aunque hoy en día se asocia principalmente con disfraces, decoraciones espeluznantes y golosinas, sus orígenes se remontan a antiguas tradiciones y creencias que han evolucionado con el tiempo.

ORÍGENES CELTAS: SAMHAIN

Halloween tiene sus raíces en una festividad celta llamada Samhain (pronunciado "sow-in"), que marcaba el final del verano y el comienzo del invierno en Irlanda, Escocia y partes de Inglaterra hace más de 2,000 años. Samhain tenía

un profundo significado espiritual y cultural para los celtas. Creían que en la noche del 31 de octubre, los espíritus de los muertos regresaban a la Tierra y se mezclaban con los vivos. Ellos tenian la costumbre de pedir alimentos de casa en casa para ofrendar a sus dioses.

Sin embargo, el "truco" en "trick or treat" se originó como una especie de amenaza disfrazada. Los niños decían "trick or treat" para implicar que, si no se les daban dulces, jugarían una broma o travesura en la casa.

Algunas personas cedían es esto y daban dulces para que los bromistas no dañaran sus propiedades o sus equipos agrícolas, por lo que en un momento los legisladores tuvieron que hablar con la comunidad para concientizar a las familias que ese era un espacio de diversión sana y no de vandalismo.

Halloween, the holiday celebrated on October 31st, is one of the most popular and recognizable holidays worldwide. Although today it is mainly associated with costumes, spooky decorations, and treats, its origins date back to ancient traditions and beliefs that have evolved over time.

CELTIC ORIGINS: SAMHAIN

Halloween has its roots in a Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced "sow-in"), which marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter in Ireland, Scotland, and parts of England over 2,000 years ago. Samhain held deep spiritual and cultural significance for the Celts. They believed that

on the night of October 31st, the spirits of the dead returned to Earth and mingled with the living. They had the custom of going from house to house asking for food as an offering to their gods.

CHRISTIANIZATION OF SAMHAIN

With the arrival of Christianity in the region, the Catholic Church sought to Christianize pagan celebrations. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1st as All Saints' Day to honor known and unknown saints. The night before, October 31st, became the "eve of All Saints," known as "All Hallows' Eve," from which the word "Halloween" originated.

It is said that during the 16th century in Ireland and Britain, it was customary on Halloween night for children to dress up, sing songs, recite poetry, or say prayers on their behalf in exchange for food, especially "Soul cakes," which were small cakes with crosses on top called "soul cakes."

OR TREAT" on Halloween began during the Great Depression in the United States but gained popularity after World War II when rationing ended, and access to candy became readily available.

During this period, Halloween festivities began to focus on children, who would go door-to-door asking for candy to celebrate. However, the "trick" in "trick or treat" originated as a veiled threat. Children would say "trick or treat" to imply that if they were not given candy, they would play a prank or trick on the household.

Some people gave in to this and provided candy to prevent mischief on their property or damage to their farming equipment, so lawmakers had to address the community to raise awareness that this was meant to be a space for wholesome fun and not vandalism.

Over time, the tradition of tricks became less common, and the phrase evolved into a friendly request for treats. Today, costumed children visit houses, saying "trick or treat," and residents offer them candy or small gifts.

THE EVOLUTION OF HALLOWEEN

Halloween has evolved significantly over the years. It has gone from a holiday rooted in the observation of natural phenomena and belief in spirits to a commercial celebration featuring elaborate costumes, spooky decorations, and a focus on fun and entertainment.

In many countries, Halloween has become a global holiday with festivals, parades, and themed activities for people of all ages. Carved pumpkins (jack-o'-lanterns), monster costumes, and ghost stories are iconic elements of this holiday.

• Gire los mangos de las ollas hacia la parte trasera de la estufa.

• Permanezca en la cocina mientras fríe, hornea o asa a la parrilla. Configure un cronómetro para recordarle que está cocinando.

• Tenga una “zona libre de niños” de al menos 3 pies alrededor de la estufa y donde se preparan o transportan alimentos o bebidas calientes.

• Recuerde: cualquier cosa puede incendiarse: mantenga los guantes de cocina, los utensilios de madera, las toallas o las cortinas alejados de la estufa.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention”. Fire Prevention Week is October 8 – 14.

There are simple but important actions you can take to keep yourselves and those around you safe when cooking.

• Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.

• Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, baking, roasting, grilling or broiling. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

• Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

• Remember - anything can catch on fire –keep oven mitts, wooden utensils, towels or curtains away from the stovetop.

• Remember to unplug appliances when they are not in use.

• When using an air fryer, make sure you give it some space so the steam can ventilate.

• When using a hotplate or griddle, stay close when cooking.

• When using a slow cooker, make sure the slow cooker is in a place where it won’t get bumped and away from things that can catch fire.

In the months of September and October, we come together to honor and celebrate the influence and contribution of the Hispanic Community in the American social

fabric. On this occasion, Isla Magazine is pleased to highlight the inspiring story of a Hispanic woman whose commitment and passion for the well-being of others testify to

the transformative power that an individual can have in the lives of many, contributing to the strengthening of society as a whole.

Her name is Carolina Rangel, a Venezuelan who has found her professional passion as an insurance agent. Carolina's journey to the United States began in 2017, marked by the difficult decision to leave her homeland and start a new life from scratch. Today, she stands out for providing guidance to the Hispanic Community on a topic of vital importance, focusing on educating and guiding her clients in the complex and important world of health insurance in the United States.

Why is accessing health insurance important? Carolina emphasizes the need to educate people about health insurance in the United States. Migrants, in particular, face significant risks if they do not have adequate health insurance, as a medical emergency can become an overwhelming financial burden, given that in this country both healthcare and education are characterized by their high costs. In addition to highlighting the importance of health insurance, Carolina also addresses another fundamental and somewhat

difficult aspect to discuss: final expense and life insurance. These insurances provide an essential solution to face challenges such as repatriation of the body or funeral and cremation expenses. Carolina invites all interested parties to contact her and schedule an appointment to explore insurance options that best suit their needs.

Renegade Paws Rescue es un rayo de esperanza para los amigos peludos necesitados, ellos que trabajan incansablemente para brindar una vida mejor a los animales y fortalecer el vínculo

entre las mascotas y su comunidad. Tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar con Rachel Weymouth, voluntaria y Jennifer Taylor, fundadora y directora de Renegade Paws Rescue.

UNA MISIÓN SINCERA

En el centro de Renegade Paws Rescue hay una misión de encontrar hogares amorosos para los animales que requieren ayuda dentro de la comunidad. Esto incluye rescatar animales, abordar casos callejeros o ayudar a los dueños de mascotas que, por diversas razones, necesitan entregar a sus queridos compañeros. Wag-O-Ween, en su decimoctavo año, promete un fin de semana de deleite y diversión los días 21 y 22 de octubre de 12 a 5:00 p.m. Este evento personifica un espectáculo de “truco o trato” donde las mascotas adornadas con disfraces se aventuran por el centro de Savannah y se detienen en negocios locales designados como paradas de golosinas. Es una ocasión espléndida para que las mascotas y sus humanos disfruten de las festividades, recojan golosinas y se deleiten en la atmósfera animada. El socio comercial local que ayuda a planificar este evento es The Hipster Hound.

Lo que hace que Wag-O-Ween sea verdaderamente especial es su inclusividad. Si bien está dirigido principalmente a perros, todas las mascotas son bienvenidas, lo que da como resultado una colección de

Renegade Paws Rescue is a beacon of hope for furry friends in need, tirelessly working to provide a better life for animals and strengthen the bond between pets and their community. We had the opportunity

to speak with Rachel Weymouth, a volunteer, and Jennifer Taylor, the founder and director of Renegade Paws Rescue.

A GENUINE MISSION

At the heart of Renegade Paws Rescue lies a mission to find loving homes for animals in need within the community. This includes rescuing animals, addressing stray cases, or assisting pet owners who, for various reasons, need to surrender their beloved companions. Through their foster program, a completely volunteer-driven effort, individuals open their homes to these animals, providing them with care and love while the organization covers all expenses, including medical needs.

WAG-O-WEEN: A SPOOKY CELEBRATION IN SAVANNAH, GA

Wag-O-Ween, now in its eighteenth year, promises a weekend of delight and fun on October 21st and 22nd from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. This event embodies a "trick-or-treat" spectacle where costumed pets venture through downtown Savannah, stopping at designated local businesses for treat stops. It's a splendid occasion for pets and their humans to enjoy the festivities, collect treats, and revel in the lively atmosphere. The local business partner helping plan this event is The Hipster Hound.

What truly sets Wag-O-Ween apart is its inclusivity. While primarily aimed at dogs, all pets are welcome, resulting in a collection of charming animals, from cats and chubby pigs to bearded dragons and even goats, all joining in on the fun.

The funds raised help support local

animal rescues, community spaying and neutering programs, as well as educational community programs.
