En esta edición especial de la Isla Magazine, queremos llevarte más allá de la tradicional comida en familia para sumergirte en inspiradoras historias de vida de nuestra querida Comunidad Hispana, que capturan el verdadero espíritu de este día.

In this special edition of Isla Magazine, we want to take you beyond the traditional family meal and immerse you in inspiring life stories of our beloved Hispanic community that capture the true spirit of this day. In our first interview, we will explore the story of two dear friends, one Mexican and the other Uruguayan, who have turned their passion for photography into a successful venture. Their story is a testament to how creativity can flourish in this country. But diversity is not limited solely to geography, as we will demonstrate in our second interview. This time, we will learn about the story of a Romanian who came to the United States and embarked on the adventure of learning the Spanish language, reminding us of the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity in the United States. In our last story of this edition, we will delve into the life of an inspiring Venezuelan who came to these
lands and not only found a new home but also the opportunity to share his love for softball with the community. DETRÁS DEL DELANTAL Acción de Gracias en Norteamérica: “Una Celebración De La Abundancia y La Gratitud” POR: José Eliseo Guzmán B. Profesional en Gastronomía Acción de Gracias es una festividad que se celebra en Norteamérica el cuarto jueves de noviembre. Es un día de celebración y gratitud por las bendiciones recibidas durante el año. El origen de la Acción de Gracias se remonta a 1621, cuando los peregrinos que llegaron a América del Norte celebraron una comida con los nativos americanos para dar gracias por la cosecha y por la ayuda que les habían brindado. La tradición de Acción de Gracias se ha mantenido hasta nuestros días. En este día, las familias se reúnen para disfrutar de una comida abundante que suele incluir pavo, puré de papas, salsa, arándanos, pastel de calabaza y otros platos tradicionales. Professional In Gastronomy Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in North America on the fourth Thursday of November. It is a day of celebration and gratitude for the blessings received during the year. The origin of Thanksgiving dates back to 1621 when the pilgrims who arrived in North America celebrated a meal with Native Americans to give thanks for the harvest and the help they had received. The tradition of Thanksgiving has continued to this day. On this day, families come together to enjoy a plentiful meal that typically includes turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries, pumpkin pie, and other traditional dishes. STUFFED TURKEY INGREDIENTS: • 1 turkey (8-10 pounds) • 1 onion, chopped • 2 carrots, chopped • 2 stalks of celery, chopped • 1 cup chopped bacon • 1 cup bread crumbs
• 1/2 cup raisins • 1/2 cup chopped nuts • 1/4 cup fresh chopped herbs, such as parsley, thyme, and rosemary • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. In a large bowl, mix the onion, carrots, celery, bacon, bread crumbs, raisins, nuts, herbs, salt, and pepper. 3. Creo también que nuestras energías juegan un papel crucial en nuestras vidas… Pero, paradójicamente, cuestiono esa creencia popular de recibir todo lo que damos, al menos no de quién o cómo lo esperaríamos. Cuando se trata de dar y recibir, existe una creencia popular de que siempre se nos devuelve todo lo que damos. Es muy fácil pensar que cuando estamos pasando por un desafío personal importante, cuando sentimos que el mundo se nos viene encima, es porque de alguna manera 34 LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM • NOVIEMBRE 2023
estamos recibiendo un castigo por algo que hemos hecho mal. Creemos que somos mal percibidos por quienes tenemos a nuestro alrededor. La realidad es mucho más compleja que eso. Pensamos que no nos merecemos lo que nos está ocurriendo, incluso; más de una vez en nuestro fuero interior nuestro ego nos hace una mala jugada, a sabiendas de que una persona a la que regularmente le tendemos la mano, no lo ha hecho. Es traumático y doloroso pensar de esa manera. La verdad, cuando hablamos de
EDUCACIÓN | EDUCATION dar y recibir no se trata de lo que hacemos por o para los demás, sino que muchas veces, en nuestro empeño; seguimos los sueños de otras personas y olvidamos los nuestros. La vida siempre tiene maneras particulares de llamarnos la atención, unas veces más duras que otras, pero lo que está mal es pretender que los demás harían por nosotros lo mismo que en algún punto hemos hecho por ellos. Quien da, lo hace sin ver cuánto y a quién da. Dar es uno de los mayores actos de benevolencia y desprendimiento que podemos practicar en nuestras vidas, y que además de traer beneficios a nuestro cerebro, nos brinda un sentido en la vida… Nos hace sentirnos útiles. Nuestro problema es que muchas veces, ante las perspectivas de cambio que no nos atrevemos a ejecutar, se nos hace mucho más fácil culpar a los demás de aquellas cosas que debimos hacer por nosotros mismos. Ante los procesos de transformación generados individualmente, lo mejor es hacer las cosas de manera paulatina, con calma. Those who have attended our events at Cala Enterprises know that I am a faithful believer in the law of attraction. I also believe that our energies play a crucial role in our lives. However, paradoxically, I question the popular belief that we always receive everything we give, at least not from whom or how we would expect it.
We believe that we are misunderstood by those around us. The reality is much more complex than that. We think we don't deserve what is happening to us. More than once, deep down, our ego plays a trick on us, knowing that someone to whom we regularly extend a helping hand has not done the same for us.
When it comes to giving and receiving, there is a popular belief that we always get back what we give. It's very easy to think that when we are going through a significant personal challenge, when we feel like the world is crashing down on us, it's because we are somehow being punished for something we've done wrong.
Thinking in this way is traumatic and painful. The truth is, when we talk about giving and receiving, it's not about what we do for others, but often, in our effort, we follow the dreams of others and forget our own.

EDUCACIÓN | EDUCATION Life always has unique ways of getting our attention, sometimes harsher than others, but it's wrong to pretend that others would do for us what we have done for them at some point. Whoever gives, does so without seeing how much and to whom they give. Giving is one of the greatest acts of benevolence and selflessness that we can practice in our lives, and besides bringing benefits to our brain, it gives us a sense of purpose in life. It makes us feel useful. Our problem is that many times, faced with the prospects of changes we dare not execute, it's much easier for us to blame others for the things we should have done for ourselves. In the face of individually generated transformation processes, it's best to do things gradually and calmly. En esta ocasión, tuvimos el privilegio de entrevistar a Florentina Harley para la Isla Magazine. Florentina es una apasionada de los idiomas y una firme defensora del bilingüismo. A través de su experiencia nos brinda una perspectiva enriquecedora sobre la importancia de dominar más de un idioma. Originaria de Rumania, Florentina llegó a los Estados Unidos en 2001, llevando consigo un amor innato por la exploración
de lenguas extranjeras. Desde temprana edad se sintió atraída por los idiomas. En Europa es común aprender uno o dos idiomas y Florentina adquirió un buen dominio del inglés. Además, este enfoque en el multilingüismo, característico de las escuelas europeas, le permitió desarrollar una sólida base en francés y español, dos idiomas conocidos como lenguas romances, que la fascinaron debido a su origen latino. Cuando Florentina llegó a los Estados Unidos, ya tenía un entendimiento básico

del español. Sin embargo, su verdadera inmersión en el idioma ocurrió gracias a su amistad con hispanohablantes.
ser frustrante, pero su consejo es claro: no renunciar, trabajar con paciencia y dedicación día a día.
Posteriormente, decidió tomar cursos universitarios, aunque su principal motivación siempre ha sido su pasión y amor por aprender. Por tanto, Florentina se siente agradecida por su experiencia en los Estados Unidos, donde pudo enriquecer su dominio de los idiomas. Ser bilingüe le abrió puertas, pasando de trabajar como mesera a convertirse en maestra de francés y español. En la actualidad, Florentina vive su vida diaria hablando principalmente inglés y español, ya que la demanda por este último idioma es cada vez mayor en los Estados Unidos.
En relación al fenómeno del "spanglish," Florentina lo ve como una evolución natural en la comunicación. Es un reflejo de cómo las palabras se adaptan y se crean en nuevas culturas. El "translingüismo" es un concepto interesante que ilustra la creación de formas innovadoras de expresión. Sin embargo, Florentina recomienda a los padres hispanos mantener el idioma nativo en el hogar para fomentar la capacidad de sus hijos para hablar varios idiomas. Conservar el idioma nativo y la cultura enriquece la identidad y las oportunidades educativas de los jóvenes.
Florentina nos cuenta que la música, las películas y la lectura en español son herramientas cruciales para enriquecer su vocabulario. Como maestra de idiomas en escuelas secundarias, su labor es vital. Muchos de sus estudiantes son recién llegados, y ella desempeña un papel fundamental en su proceso de adaptación al nuevo entorno. Florentina comprende que aprender un nuevo idioma puede

On this occasion, we had the privilege of interviewing Florentina Harley. Florentina is passionate about languages and a staunch advocate for bilingualism. Through her experience, she provides us with an enriching perspective on the importance of mastering more than one language. Originally from Romania, Florentina arrived in the United States in 2001, bringing with her an innate love for exploring 46 LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM • NOVIEMBRE 2023
foreign languages. From an early age, she was drawn to languages. In Europe, it is common to learn one or two languages, and Florentina gained a good command of English. Additionally, this focus on multilingualism, characteristic of European schools, allowed her to develop a strong foundation in French and Spanish, two languages known as Romance languages, which fascinated her due to their Latin origin.

When Florentina arrived in the United States, she already had a basic understanding of Spanish. However, her true immersion in the language happened thanks to her friendship with Spanish speakers. Later, she decided to take university courses, although her main motivation has always been her passion and love for learning. Therefore, Florentina is grateful for her experience in the United States, where she was able to enhance her language skills. Being bilingual opened doors for her, transitioning from working as a waitress to becoming a French and Spanish teacher. Currently, Florentina lives her daily life speaking mainly English and Spanish, as the demand for the latter language is growing in the United States. Florentina tells us that music, movies, and reading in Spanish are crucial tools to enrich her vocabulary. As a language teacher in high schools, her work is vital. Many of her students are newcomers, and she plays a fundamental role in their process of adapting to the new environment. Florentina understands that learning a new language can be frustrating, but her advice is clear: do not give up, work
with patience and dedication every day. Regarding the phenomenon of "Spanglish," Florentina sees it as a natural evolution in communication. It reflects how words adapt and are created in new cultures. "Translingualism" is an interesting concept that illustrates the creation of innovative forms of expression. However, Florentina recommends to Hispanic parents to maintain the native language at home to encourage their children's ability to speak multiple languages. Preserving the native language and culture enriches the identity and educational opportunities of young people. Florentina reminds us of the beauty and usefulness of bilingualism, and how this ability can open doors, enrich our lives, and enable new forms of communication in an increasingly diverse and globalized world."

Never use on a wooden deck, on a porch or in garages.

En el epicentro de esta emoción se encuentra el venezolano Rafael Marcano, presidente de la Liga Hispana de Softball, quien ha accedido a compartir con La Isla Magazine la apasionante historia detrás de esta creciente tradición deportiva. La Isla Magazine. Rafael Marcano, muchas gracias por la invitación, por traernos aquí a vivir y disfrutar del softball. ¿Cómo nace esta idea en el Lowcountry? Rafael. R/ Bueno, muchas gracias a ustedes por estar acá presentes y hacer esta reseña. La Liga Hispana de Softball nace el año pasado, en el mes de octubre y surge como una necesidad del latino, del hispano, de hacer algo diferente los domingos. Muchos jugadores de los que están hoy presentes aquí jugaban fútbol y yo, también soy amante del fútbol, pero decidimos empezar a jugar softball. En noviembre comenzamos el primer torneo y luego nos reunimos para darle inicio a la Liga como empresa. Después comenzamos nuestro segundo torneo con seis equipos; ese torneo lo terminamos en el mes de Agosto y en el mes de Septiembre, comenzamos este torneo actual. La Isla Magazine. Es increíble ver cómo una idea que nace de la pasión por el deporte como tal, se convierte en algo que va creciendo cada vez más. ¿Para el próximo campeonato habrá espacio para nuevos equipos?

Actualmente tenemos ocho equipos que representan a Cuba, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Honduras, México, Venezuela y República Dominicana. También hay jugadores norteamericanos e incluso, jugadores de países donde regularmente no se juega el softball, como Colombia. Así que tenemos jugadores de muchas nacionalidades. La Isla Magazine. Rafael, sabemos que en Venezuela tienen un gran amor por el softball. Tú, como venezolano, ¿nos puedes contar cómo se vive esta pasión en tu país? Rafael. R/ Sí, en Venezuela el baseball es una pasión, es el primer deporte a nivel nacional y, como tal, el softball se juega en cualquier parte de Venezuela, especialmente en todos los barrios del país. La Isla Magazine. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre el baseball y el softball? Rafael. R/ En el softball, las bases y el estadio son más cortos. El picheo es diferente, porque en el baseball la pelota se lanza por encima del brazo y en el softball se lanza por debajo del brazo. También, la pelota de softball es más grande. La Isla Magazine. Quienes son aficionados a este deporte, aquí encuentran un lugar que los acoge y del que pueden ser parte, no solo haciendo parte del equipo sino también, como una experiencia que pueden vivir en familia.

COMUNIDAD | COMMUNITY In the heart of Georgia, a great passion for softball flourishes. At the epicenter of this excitement is Rafael Marcano, a Venezuelan and the president of the Hispanic Softball League, who has agreed to share with La Isla Magazine the fascinating story behind this growing sports tradition. La Isla Magazine: Rafael Marcano, thank you very much for the invitation, for bringing us here to live and enjoy softball. How did this idea come about in the Lowcountry? Rafael: Well, thank you for being here and for featuring us. The Hispanic Softball League was founded last year, in October, as a response to the need of the Latino community to do something different on Sundays. Many of the players present here today used to play soccer, and I'm also a soccer enthusiast. However, we decided to start playing softball. We initiated the first tournament in November, and then we came together to formally establish the league as a company. After that, we began our second tournament with six teams, which we concluded in August, and now in September, we've started the current tournament. La Isla Magazine: It's incredible to see how an idea born out of a passion for the sport grows over time. Will there be room for new teams in the next championship? Rafael: Yes, the idea is to keep growing, and we are confident in this. Currently, we have eight teams representing Cuba, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. We also have American players, and even players from countries where softball is not

COMUNIDAD | COMMUNITY typically played, like Colombia. So, we have players from many nationalities. La Isla Magazine: Rafael, we know that in Venezuela, there is a great love for softball. As a Venezuelan, can you tell us how this passion is experienced in your country? Rafael: Yes, in Venezuela, baseball is a passion, the national sport, and, as such, softball is played everywhere in Venezuela, especially in all the neighborhoods across the country. La Isla Magazine: What is the difference between baseball and softball? Rafael: In softball, the bases and the field are smaller. The pitching is different because in baseball, the ball is thrown overhand, while in softball, it's thrown underhand. Also, the softball itself is larger. La Isla Magazine: Those who are fans of this sport find a place here where they can be a part of it, not only by being on the team there from 8 or 9 in the morning until 5 or 6 in the evening.
