LA CARTA | THE LETTER
CELEBRATING HISPANIC H E R ITAGE MONTH
BY: La Isla Magazine Dear community, Every September reminds us of something profound: our story didn’t begin here, yet here we are, continuing to write new chapters with courage, hard work, and hope. We are a community that arrived with dreams, sacrifices, and the determination to build a dignified future for our families. During this Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor not only our roots but also the journey we’ve walked, a journey that, for many, has been shaped by immigration, resilience, and the strength it takes to begin again. From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate who we are: our traditions, our language, our food, our stories, and the legacy we contribute to this region. At La Isla Magazine, this celebration is part of our identity, an homage to those who build, dream, and keep our culture alive every day.
We also highlight the young people who represent our future: the students of the Spanish Advanced Learner Program at Hilton Head High and Middle School, who embrace their language and heritage with pride. We’ve also included essential resources for our families: safety tips from Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue with their campaign “Safe charging is a superpower,” updated information on immigration topics, and a special recipe prepared by two chefs from our favorite local restaurants. This month is a reminder of our collective strength. We are a community that moves forward, supports one another, and continues leaving its mark. May this edition be a hug, a recognition, and a celebration of everything we are.
In this edition, we celebrate pioneers like Taco Brown and its owners, Porfirio Cadelas and With pride and affection, Susana Mateo, the first Hispanic‑owned food La Isla Magazine truck in the area, whose story reflects hard work, vision, and love for the cuisine that represents us.

EL FOOD TRUCK QUE ABRIÓ CAMINO EN EL LOWCOUNTRY Porfirio Cadelas y Susana Mateo – Orgullo Hispano y Sabor que Inspira POR: La Isla Magazine
10 LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM • SEPTIEMBRE 2026
establecida, no recibía fácilmente nuevas propuestas móviles.
TU HISTORIA | YOUR STORY La salsa verde familiar completa la experiencia.

TACO BROWN:
THE FOOD TRUCK THAT OPENED THE ROAD IN THE LOWCOUNTRY Porfirio Cadelas and Susana Mateo – Hispanic Pride and Flavor That Inspires BY: La Isla Magazine
n the Lowcountry, where food and Ibecome culture intertwine, Taco Brown has a symbol of flavor, perseverance, and community. Behind the food truck are Porfirio Cadelas and his wife, Susana Mateo, a Mexican couple who turned an uncertain dream into a story of local impact. HOW TACO BROWN WAS BORN Long before the food truck existed, Porfirio and Susana cooked at local festivals, including beloved community events such as the Latin Music Fest and Taco Fest by La Isla Magazine. At every event, people encouraged them:
At that time, there were no established food trucks in Hilton Head. They only appeared at events, fairs, and festivals, none operated permanently or had a fixed location. Seeing the opportunity and growing interest from the public, they decided to take the leap. “We bought our first food truck… and thank God, here we are.” THE FIRST DAY: TOTAL UNCERTAINTY Susana opened the food truck by herself, unsure if anyone would show up.
“Why don’t you start your own business?” SEPTEMBER 2026 • LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM 13
TU HISTORIA | YOUR STORY “They thought we were going to take their customers.” Community support, and the help of a key individual, now resting in peace, made it possible for Taco Brown to become legally established. MEXICO IN EVERY DISH Originally from Toluca, Porfirio and Susana wanted to showcase the richness of Mexican cuisine through authentic flavors: traditional salsas, handmade quesadillas, sopes, and chorizos prepared the way they learned at home.
They had the location, the truck, and the dream, but not the certainty that customers would respond. They did. Some of the customers from that very first day still visit them today, becoming part of the extended family they’ve built around Taco Brown. BECOMING THE FIRST ON HILTON HEAD
Every dish reflects their identity and the culinary diversity they aim to share with the community. THE FLAVOR THAT TELLS THEIR STORY Their quesadillas and gorditas represent who they are: traditional, homemade, and full of flavor from the very first bite. Their family green salsa completes the experience. SERVING THE COMMUNITY
For Porfirio and Susana, serving both the Taco Brown became the first established food Hispanic and local community is an honor. truck in the area, the first to operate permanently “It’s a satisfaction to see people enjoy our rather than only at events. products and recognize the quality.” Opening that path wasn’t easy. Hilton Head, with its strong tourism and established restaurant culture, wasn’t quick to embrace mobile food concepts. “It was a challenge for the Hispanic community. We struggled with permits, doubts, and closed doors… but we opened the road.” THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE: TWO YEARS OF STRUGGLE Obtaining the permits took almost two years. There were meetings, discussions, and resistance from restaurants that feared competition. 14 LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM • SEPTIEMBRE 2026
WHEN THEY KNEW THE DREAM WAS REAL
A MESSAGE FOR HISPANIC ENTREPRENEURS
They felt it when people never stopped supporting them, at festivals, events, and at the food truck day after day.
“Take the risk. Nothing is impossible. You need responsibility, consistency, perseverance, and sacrifice. The American Dream does exist, but you have to fight for it.”
That constant support confirmed that Taco Brown was more than a business: it was a community story. LESSONS FROM THE JOURNEY The journey taught Porfirio that success is built through perseverance, discipline, sacrifice, and the ability to learn new skills. Above all, it showed him that even far from their home country, the Hispanic community is capable of achieving great things when it stays firm and consistent.
There will be obstacles and people who say no, but with discipline, everything is possible. TACO BROWN: A LEGACY ON WHEELS Today, Taco Brown continues to grow, serve, and inspire. Porfirio and Susana thank every customer and every person who has believed in them. Taco Brown didn’t just open a food truck. They opened a path.

MES DE LA HERENCIA HISPANA: N U ES TR A HE R E NC IA . N UESTR A VOZ. NU E S T R O FU TURO

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH: O UR H E R ITAG E. OU R VO ICE. OU R F U T U R E.
BY: Mayra Rivera‑Vázquez - Community Activist and Attorney In South Carolina, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate who we are, what we contribute, and the future we are building together. Today, nearly 390,000 residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, teachers, nurses, entrepreneurs, farm workers, students, veterans, construction workers, and small‑business owners. We raise families, create jobs, pay taxes, and strengthen the cultural and economic fabric of the state.
But change does not come from hope alone. Change comes when we participate. Our vote is our voice and our seat at the table where decisions are made. When we vote, we influence our schools, our communities, our opportunities, and the future our children will inherit.
We are not guests in South Carolina’s story. We are part of the story. Immigrants make up 7.7% of the labor force, 11.2% of entrepreneurs, 12% of STEM workers, and nearly 20% of the agricultural workforce. We contribute approximately $4 billion in taxes and hold a spending power of $10.2 billion. Each number represents dreams, hard work, and a community pushing the state forward. Latinos are helping shape a future that is younger, more entrepreneurial, and more globally connected. Our bilingual and bicultural identity opens doors in a rapidly changing economy, while our children build new aspirations inspired by those who came before them. Celebrating our contributions also means protecting the dignity of every family. Many continue to face barriers in education, housing, healthcare, and legal processes. That is why conversations about immigration policy and family protection remain essential for our communities.
If you are a U.S. citizen, by birth or naturalization, and you are 18, or will turn 18 by November 3, 2026, you can register to vote. The registration deadline is October 4, 2026. (Please confirm official dates at SCVotes.gov, as they may change.)
