OCTUBRE:

OCTOBER:
R O OTS T HAT INS PIRE BY: La Isla Magazine Dear community, October arrives with a special charm: warm colors, crisp air, and traditions that bring families together. Although Hispanic Heritage Month officially ends on October 15, its spirit remains alive in our stories and in everyone who proudly celebrates their roots. In this edition, we honor that legacy through voices that inspire. We spoke with educators who weave culture into learning, including Francy Johannan, a Montessori teacher whose students prepared a special “Quick Facts” feature highlighting unique aspects of our heritage. We also celebrate the journey of Iris Sarria, whose life in dance, family, and faith reflects the resilience that defines our community. From the university sphere, USCB Vice Chancellor Marcio Moreno shares insights on educational opportunities and access for our youth, while we explore the impact of the AVID program on students of Beaufort County Schools working with determination to achieve their goals.
dreams, worries, and a profound desire for stability. That is why we highlight the importance of civic participation and how, for those who can exercise it, their voice can support those who do not yet have that possibility. Staying informed and engaged in these conversations is a way to uplift one another and continue building a safer future for our communities. And as every October, we celebrate the season with joy: a special fall recipe and a calendar full of family activities, festivals, and trick-or-treat events that fill our neighborhoods with color and smiles. May this edition be a warm embrace for everyone, a space where our roots, our stories, and our hopes come together. With gratitude,

• “Hispanic” y “Latino” no significan

SABÍAS QUE | DID YOU KNOW
DID YOU KNOW?
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH BY: The Spanish 3 Students – Lowcountry Montessori School This month, the Spanish 3 students immersed themselves in the history, culture, and flavors of the Hispanic world. Through debates, readings, and thoughtful reflections, they uncovered fascinating facts they now share with our community. Here are some of their most interesting findings.
FACTS WORTH KNOWING • Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. It began as a week in 1968 and was expanded to a full month in 1988 by Congress and President Ronald Reagan. • September 15 marks the independence anniversaries of five Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. That’s why the celebration begins on this date. • Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence during this period, on September 16 and September 18, respectively. • Today, about 20–21% of the U.S. population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, making it the largest minority group in the country. • Much of the American Southwest was once Mexican territory, and Florida and Puerto Rico were under Spanish rule. These historical roots help explain the deep Hispanic influence in U.S. culture.
• “Hispanic” and “Latino” are not the same: Hispanic refers to Spanishspeaking heritage; Latino refers to origins in Latin America. • Corn and beans have ancient Indigenous origins, domesticated by civilizations in Mesoamerica and the Andes. • Rice arrived in Latin America through European trade routes from Africa and Asia, becoming a staple across the region. • Ceviche, one of the most iconic dishes of the Americas, has ancient origins in Peru, where it was prepared with acidic fruit juices and peppers long before modern refrigeration. • Hispanic culture has deeply shaped the United States: music, food, art, language, family traditions, and more. Its influence is woven into everyday American life. • Immigration is a foundational part of U.S. history, and understanding it helps combat misinformation and celebrate the diversity that defines the nation.

TU HISTORIA | YOUR STORY
IRIS SARRIA: LA REINA DE LA MARINERA QUE INSPIRA A LA COMUNIDAD HISPANA POR: La Isla Magazine ENTRE DANZA, FAMILIA Y FE: UN LEGADO DE RAÍCES Y RESILIENCIA QUE INSPIRA.
“No te rindas.

IRIS SARRIA: THE QUEEN OF MARINERA WHO INSPIRES THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY BY: La Isla Magazine BETWEEN DANCE, FAMILY, AND FAITH: A LEGACY OF ROOTS AND RESILIENCE THAT INSPIRES. Iris Sarria was born in Cartavio, a small town in northern Peru where music and dance were part of everyday life. Her mother enrolled her in dance academies at the age of five, and soon Iris became the little girl who lit up every gathering with marinera, tondero, and festejo. At fourteen, she trained under maestro Chino Calderón to compete in the National Marinera Contest in Trujillo. She didn’t win, but that stage planted a dream that would stay with her for life. A JOURNEY THAT CHANGED HER DESTINY In 1988, Iris arrived in the United States trying to save her marriage. Her oldest children, Juan Carlos and Jonathan, remained in Peru. After separating, a flight delay left her stranded in New York with only 100 dollars. a family. In New York, Rosemary and Jennifer were born, and later, while living in Chicago, her youngest son, Ricky, arrived. These were years of effort, work, and growth, but also of change. After fifteen years of a shared story, life took a different turn, and Iris had to rebuild herself once again. CHICAGO: REUNIONS AND HEALING Her older children eventually arrived in the United States, brought by their father to California. Iris, facing a penalty for overstaying her visa, didn’t know how to travel to see them. Even so, once they were teenagers, they began searching for her. The reunion with Juan Carlos happened at a Peruvian picnic in Chicago: a marinera began to play, and mother and son danced together after years of separation. Shortly after, Jonathan also traveled to see her. Those moments healed deep wounds and marked the beginning of a new chapter for the family. SAVANNAH AND RICHMOND HILL: A NEW BEGINNING GUIDED BY LOVE Years later, when Iris had found emotional stability, destiny surprised her with an encounter that would
TU HISTORIA | YOUR STORY change her life. A mutual friend invited her to perform at a wedding, replacing an artist who had canceled. She agreed, not knowing she would meet the man who would become her life partner. While waiting to be paid, the groom’s brother, son of Peruvian parents and an aircraft mechanic, approached her to talk. What began as a casual conversation became a deep, respectful connection filled with support. Over time, they decided to join their paths and move to Savannah, Georgia, seeking stability and new opportunities. Thanks to him, Iris found a home full of affection and a new chapter in her life. In Savannah, Iris became a cultural ambassador: she founded dance groups, taught in schools, and participated in festivals. Her children joined her in performances, strengthening the bond between art and family. For Iris, representing Peru means “opening a little bag full of memories, traditions, and love for my homeland, and sharing it with everyone.” THE PAIN THAT TRANSFORMED HER LIFE
Juan Carlos, El Peruano. Today, he is Iris’s right hand, carrying forward the family’s culinary legacy with dedication and love. Every dish served at La Casita carries a piece of Rosemary. The restaurant is, quite literally, a dream fulfilled in her honor. QUEEN OF MARINERA: A CHILDHOOD DREAM COME TRUE Recently, Iris was crowned Queen of Marinera by Club Libertad Filial Atlanta, a recognition of her trajectory and cultural work. She will compete in October representing Georgia in a national event with participants from across the United States and other countries. For her, this title is the realization of a dream born in her childhood. A STEP INTO FILM Iris also appears as an actress in a short film directed by a SCAD graduate, presented at the Georgia Latino Film Festival. The production explores Hispanic customs and culture, and she portrays the role of a Latina mother, bringing authenticity and emotional depth to the story. A LEGACY OF SERVICE
In 2013, Iris faced the loss of her eldest daughter, Rosemary, in a car accident. Rosemary was her artistic partner and the person with whom she shared a dream: opening a Peruvian restaurant together. They had even planned to travel to Miami to take a Peruvian culinary course. That dream was put on hold, and grief led Iris to seek refuge in work and community. This is how Mucho Gusto Latin Market was born, a space that helped her stay standing and begin to heal. LA CASITA: A DREAM FULFILLED IN ROSEMARY’S HONOR Years later, Iris returned to the dream she had started with her daughter. In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, she opened La Casita Peruvian Restaurant in Richmond Hill, a place where the community finds authentic food, warmth, and connection. Her youngest son, Ricky, traveled to Mexico to train in Peruvian cuisine at the restaurant of his brother
Iris hopes to be remembered as someone who was always willing to help, her community, those seeking support, information, or comfort. Her message to other women is clear: “Don’t give up. Age is just a number. Pursue your dreams with passion, not for money. And put God first in everything.” AN EXAMPLE OF HERITAGE AND STRENGTH The story of Iris Sarria is the story of thousands of women: mothers, immigrants, workers, artists, entrepreneurs. But it is also unique, powerful, and deeply inspiring. In this edition, La Isla Magazine honors her journey, her culture, her faith, and her legacy. Because Iris doesn’t just represent Peru… she represents the strength, heart, and resilience of all of us. OCTOBER 2026 • LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM 19

BEAUFORT COUNTY SCHOOLS CELEBRATE
AVID DAY:
GROWTH, CONFIDENCE, AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES BY: La Isla Magazine On September 18, three Beaufort County School District campuses, Hilton Head Island Middle School, Hilton Head Island High School, and Beaufort Middle School, joined schools nationwide in celebrating AVID Day, a recognition of the impact of Advancement Via Individual Determination on students, educators, and communities. AVID strengthens key academic skills such as critical thinking, organization, collaboration, and self‑advocacy. In these designated AVID schools, the program has helped students build confidence, improve their academic performance, and prepare for higher‑level coursework. During the celebration, students and educators shared reflections using the theme “Because of AVID, I…” and the national hashtag #MyAVIDWhy, expressing that AVID has made them more organized, more confident in their schoolwork, and excited about taking advanced classes.
MaryBeth White, AVID Site Coordinator at Hilton Head Island High School, highlighted the program’s growth in its second year: “We are so excited about the growth of AVID at HHIHS. We’ve seen the accomplishments of AVID students across the country, and we look forward to watching our Seahawks become the best versions of themselves.” AVID District Director Megan Jarrett also celebrated district progress, including Beaufort Middle School’s recognition as a Highly Certified AVID School, and continued growth at Hilton Head Island Middle and High School: “AVID helps students challenge themselves academically while giving them the tools to plan for their futures, whether that path leads to college, a career, or both. This program will continue to empower students across Beaufort County as they set goals and chart their own paths.” AVID Day serves as a reminder that when schools, families, and communities work together with purpose, students gain the confidence to explore new possibilities and take meaningful steps toward their goals.
• No vamos a quedarnos callados. • Vamos a participar, a organizarnos y a votar.

THE POWER OF OUR VOICE IN THE LOWCOUNTRY WHY OUR C O M M U N IT Y’S VOT E M AT T E RS NOW M O R E T H A N EVE R BY: Mayra Rivera‑Vázquez - Community Activist and Attorney Since 2025, the Trump administration has advanced an immigration agenda that has deeply affected the lives of millions of families. Expanded deportations, restrictions on asylum, attacks on temporary protections, increased immigration enforcement, and new policies impacting even those who entered the country legally have created fear and uncertainty in communities across the United States. But fear cannot be our political strategy. Our response must be action. For those of us who are citizens and eligible to vote, this moment comes with a responsibility. It is not enough to say we support immigrant families; we must use the power we have to stand up for them. That power is our vote. Our vote determines who writes the laws, who controls Congress, who approves federal budgets, and who oversees the agencies that impact our daily lives. It determines who represents our communities when decisions are made about immigration, healthcare, education, wages, public safety, and the future of our families. And on November 3, 2026, we have an opportunity to make that power count.
And remember those who cannot yet vote. Many of them are working, raising children, paying taxes, building businesses, caring for our kids, and contributing to the communities we all call home. They may not have a ballot. But we do. Here in the Lowcountry, where immigrant families are an essential part of the workforce, culture, and community life, our civic participation is more important than ever. Our community’s voice deserves to be present when decisions are made that shape our future. • So let’s use it. • We will not be silent. • We will not allow ourselves to be pushed out of the public conversation. • We will participate, organize, and vote. • Our vote is not for sale. Our vote is our voice. Our vote is our power. Editorial Note: La Isla Magazine shares this opinion column as part of our commitment to civic education and community participation. For official information on voter registration and election procedures, please consult trusted sources such as vote.gov or your state’s election website.
If you are registered, vote. If you know five people who are registered, make sure they vote. Talk to your family, your neighbors, your coworkers, and your community. Help them understand what is at stake. OCTOBER 2026 • LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM 37
