JUNIO

UN MES PARA INFORMARNOS, UNIRNOS Y AVANZAR

POR: La Isla Magazine

Querida comunidad,

JUNE

A MONTH TO LEARN, UNITE, AND MOVE FORWARD

Dear Community,

June arrives with reflection and hope for our community. In our region, immigration is part of daily life, driving the economy, enriching culture, and strengthening the social fabric we share.

Nationally, the immigration debate remains intense. The system faces slow processes and overloaded courts, while the economy increasingly relies on immigrant workers. In this context, the 2026 elections in South Carolina and Georgia, with primaries in May and June and the general election on November 3, offer a historic opportunity for the Latino voice to shape the country’s direction.

Recently, the Trump administration announced an executive action related to banking controls for immigrants without legal status. It is essential to clarify that it is not yet implemented and does not immediately affect our community’s financial life. Local and national organizations are reviewing the details and preparing guidance. The message is clear: stay informed, not alarmed.

This year also brings excitement with the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the opening match on June 11 and the tournament running through July 19, including games in Atlanta. For our

community, soccer is identity, pride, and family.

Check the special World Cup section in this edition, where you’ll find a match chart to follow and fill in as the tournament progresses.

Our region remains a place where immigration unites. We are supported by organizations working tirelessly for our families, including the Lowcountry Immigration Coalition, Neighborhood Outreach Connection (NOC), the Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage, Migrant Equity Southeast, and the Gullah and Latino Advisory Council, among others offering education, legal support, health, culture, and civic engagement. Thanks to them, our community is stronger and more visible than ever.

June also invites us to celebrate Father’s Day, honoring the men who support their families with work, sacrifice, and love.

The key this month is simple: stay informed, get involved, and remain united. Our story has always been one of resilience and hope. Today, more than ever, our voice matters.

THE FATHER, THE DREAMER, AND THE LEADER BEHIND LA POBLANITA

In the Lowcountry, where thousands of stories of hard work intertwine to form the fabric of our Hispanic community, few inspire as deeply as that of Jeremías Moreno, founder of La Poblanita Supermarkets and Restaurants. His name has become synonymous with honest work, growth, and service.

But behind the entrepreneur who now leads eleven businesses, there is a father who has never stopped dreaming, or teaching his children, and an entire community, that dreams do come true when pursued with discipline and faith.

FROM SELLING ON THE STREETS TO BUILDING A LEGACY

Jeremías arrived in the United States like many immigrants: with a suitcase full of dreams and the hope of finding opportunity. “I arrived without a defined immigration status, but with a desire to grow,” he recalls. His first business didn’t come from a strategic plan, but from a need: the community wanted accessible Latino products, and with a small delivery service, he began supplying them.

What started as an improvised food truck became a chain of supermarkets and restaurants

that today serve thousands of families. The first La Poblanita store opened in Hilton Head on April 1st, and within months it needed to expand.

“Businesses come when the moment is right,” he says humbly. “I didn’t look for them; God placed them in my path.”

THE CHALLENGE OF GROWING WITHOUT FEAR

His greatest obstacle was living and building a business while resolving his immigration situation. “Starting out without proper documentation is difficult, but not impossible,” he says. Even so, he never stopped. He worked, he fulfilled his responsibilities, he trusted. And when he finally obtained his legal status, he had already built a solid foundation: loyal customers, an impeccable reputation, and a work ethic that sets him apart.

A BUSINESSMAN WITH A HEART FOR HIS COMMUNITY

For Jeremías, serving the Hispanic community is a personal commitment. He doesn’t consider himself wealthy; he considers himself useful. His philosophy is simple: earn what is fair and pass the benefits on to the community. If he gets cheaper avocados, he lowers the price. If the economy tightens, he absorbs the impact before passing it to customers.

He also supports local causes, from VIM to repatriations. “I feel like I still have much more to give,” he admits. His mission is clear: bring accessible products to families and keep the spirit of Latino solidarity alive.

HONESTY: THE VALUE THAT HOLDS EVERYTHING TOGETHER

If one value defines Jeremías, it is honesty. “I don’t like stealing from anyone,” he says firmly. He recalls once notifying a supplier that they had forgotten to charge him for

merchandise. The vendor, surprised, told him it was the first time anyone had ever done that. For Jeremías, doing the right thing is the only way to live in peace. That is why his partners trust him, his employees respect him, and his customers follow him.

A LEADER WHO CARES FOR HIS PEOPLE

His leadership style is warm and approachable. At La Poblanita, employees eat for free, receive bonuses, celebrate together, and feel like family. “There’s no need to steal when people are treated with dignity,” he explains. With more than 160 employees across supermarkets, restaurants, and food trucks, Jeremías has created an environment where loyalty and trust are the foundation of success.

THE FATHER BEHIND THE ENTREPRENEUR

This Father’s Day month, Jeremías opens his heart. He has four children and a granddaughter, and although he acknowledges that work has taken time away from them, he has found ways to make up for it: family vacations every December, summer trips to Mexico, traditions that never break.

His children grew up among boxes, produce, and customers. Today, two of them are studying careers that prepare them to be independent; his teenage son works at the store to earn his own money. “What costs you nothing, you don’t value,” he always reminds them.

As a father, his mission is clear: teach them to be

responsible, hardworking, and grateful. As an entrepreneur, he wants to leave them a solid business, but above all, an example.

THE PRICE OF SUCCESS AND THE REWARD OF LOVE

Jeremías’ greatest sacrifice has been time. “I arrived late, left early… we barely saw each other,” he recalls. But he also learned to delegate, to trust his team, and to build a system that runs without him. Today, he enjoys more time with his children, even if brief, it is full of quality.

A MESSAGE FOR YOUNG HISPANICS

His advice is direct: Discipline, focus, and hunger to grow.

“Dreams come true, but they require long nights, sacrifice, and clear goals,” he says. “There’s time for everything, but you can’t lose focus.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR LA POBLANITA?

The future is expansion, innovation, and service. Improving customer service, eliminating lines, opening new opportunities for his children and his team. “There is so much potential to grow, but without forgetting where we came from,” he says. “Always with our feet on the ground.”

A FATHER WHO INSPIRES AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY

In Jeremías Moreno, we find the essence of the Hispanic father: tireless worker, provider, dreamer, guide, and example. His story not only celebrates business success, but also love for family, faith in hard work, and commitment to his people.

This Father’s Day, La Isla Magazine honors men like him, those who, with sacrifice and heart, build a better future for their children and for our entire community.

CONOCE A LOS ROSTROS DE VAVIA

GREG WESTFALL & MARCO CASARIN

CONOCE A GREG Y MARCO

MEET THE FACES BEHIND VAVIA

GREG WESTFALL & MARCO CASARIN

VAVIA DUMPSTER RENTAL

Whether it’s a renovation, a deep clean, a painting project, roofing, landscaping, or any type of construction work, managing debris can quickly become one of the biggest challenges. In Hilton Head, Bluffton, the entire Lowcountry, Savannah and surrounding areas, there is an ally who understands that need better than anyone: VaVia Dumpster Rental, led by Greg Westfall and Marco Casarin.

VaVia is a local roll‑off container company built on a clear promise: fast, reliable service with direct communication, without complications or delays. With same day or next‑day delivery, Greg and Marco know that for both contractors and homeowners, time is essential, and a delay in the dumpster can slow down an entire project.

But VaVia’s difference goes beyond speed. Their 10- and 15-yard containers are designed to fit narrow driveways, tight spaces, and neighborhoods with strict HOA rules. Their clean design and neutral color blend easily into residential areas, and they include built-in driveway protection, preventing damage and giving customers peace of mind.

For Greg and Marco, the service is not just about dropping off a container; it’s about removing the stress from the entire process.

“If the customer doesn’t have to think about their dumpster, then we did our job right,” Greg says.

That philosophy is the foundation of VaVia’s “Easy Go” concept: a simple, fast, and dependable process. From the first call or message to delivery, pickup, and follow‑up, customers work directly with local people who respond, explain, and solve. No call centers. No waiting. No surprises.

VaVia serves both residential clients and commercial contractors, becoming a key resource for homeowners

tackling renovations or cleanouts, as well as for painters, remodelers, general contractors, cleaning companies, and all types of trades that need efficiency and flexibility. Greg and Marco have built a reputation based on punctuality, honesty, and commitment, helping keep projects moving and neighborhoods clean.

At its core, VaVia Dumpster Rental reflects the owners’ belief in doing business the right way: showing up on time, communicating clearly, and treating every customer like a neighbor, because many times, they are.

By combining modern convenience with a genuine commitment to the community, VaVia is not just hauling debris. They are helping build a more organized, efficient, and connected Lowcountry, one project at a time.

MEET GREG & MARCO

Greg and Marco met thanks to their dogs, during early‑morning beach walks in the middle of the pandemic. There, they discovered they shared the same dream: to build a local business that would allow them to stay in the Lowcountry and serve their community. With backgrounds in the corporate world, they decided to leave behind the suits and ties to create a company built on exceptional service, clear communication, and heart-driven work.

Today, VaVia Lowcountry is the result of that dream and a trusted partner for both families and contractors who need fast, professional, and hassle‑free dumpster service.

SEGURIDAD EN EL

VERANO

POR: Cinda Seamon

Coordinadora de Programas de Reducción de Riesgos y Alcance

Comunitario, Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue

• ¡Siempre usen protector solar!

SAFETY SUMMER

Community Risk Reduction & Outreach Program Coordinator, Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue

Kids! Summer is here and it’s really important for you to stay safe all summer long.

• Before you leave the house, make sure your parents know where you are going.

• If you are riding your bike – ride with a friend. Never ride alone. And the most important thing you can wear is a bike helmet. Make sure your bike is working –tires are pumped up and the brakes work.

• Always wear sunscreen! You might need to put it on every 2 hours or after you’re finished swimming.

• Always drink a lot of water when it’s hot! That does not mean soda – it should be water or a sports drink. It is so important to stay hydrated as these temperatures go up.

• NEVER go swimming without an adult! When you are swimming at a pool, make sure you pay attention to the pool rules – like no running at the pool and no diving.

• If you go to the beach, stay near your parents and don’t bother the sea creatures because the beach is their home.

• Stay away from insects and insect nests and always use a bug repellent to help keep the bugs away.

• Never eat any berries off bushes.

• Stay away from wild animals like raccoons, snakes and alligators. If you see a dog, make sure you ask the owner if it’s ok to pet the dog.

• Remember to keep an eye on the sky. If you see a storm approaching – go inside.

Have a fun, safe, and unforgettable summer!
