CARTA DEL EDITOR AGOSTO

POR: La Isla Magazine

Querida comunidad,

EDITOR’S LETTER AUGUST

Dear community,

August always arrives with a special kind of energy. It’s a month of new beginnings, backpacks ready, blank notebooks waiting to be filled, and dreams taking shape once again. At La Isla Magazine, we celebrate this spirit with an edition dedicated to the return to school, a moment that brings families, teachers, and students together in the hope of a bright future.

This month, we highlight the inspiring story of Ms. Oviedo, a former USCB student whose journey shows that discipline, faith, and perseverance can open doors many believe are out of reach. Her story reminds our youth that while the path may be challenging, they are never alone, and moving forward is always worth it.

We also spoke with Principal Steve Schidrich and Assistant Principal Margherita Haldenwang of Hilton Head High School, who shared details about the school’s recent renovation and expansion. These improvements not only modernize the facilities but also reflect a deep commitment to the well‑being and learning of our students.

In this edition, we also address current immigration topics, offering clear and useful information for our families. As always, we include our recipe of the month, a coupon section to support household budgets, and practical tips for navigating the severe rain and storms that have accompanied us this summer.

Every page of this magazine is crafted with care, with you in mind, your growth, your safety, and your well‑being. Thank you for continuing to pick up your magazine, for supporting us, and for allowing us to be part of your daily life.

May this month bring learning, opportunities, and plenty of inspiration.

With gratitude,

HILTON HEAD ISLAND HIGH SCHOOL:

A NEW ERA OF LEARNING, INCLUSION, AND OPPORTUNITY

Hilton Head Island is entering a new chapter. As families prepare for the start of the school year, the newly constructed Hilton Head Island High School (HHIHS) stands as a symbol of growth, innovation, and commitment to every student who calls the Lowcountry home. With modern facilities, expanded academic pathways, and a renewed focus on inclusion, the new campus represents far more than a building, it represents a promise.

Principal Steve Schidrich and Assistant Principal Margherita Haldenwang shared with La Isla Magazine how this transformation will shape the future of education on the island, especially for Hispanic and multilingual families who make up a vibrant and essential part of our community.

A SCHOOL BUILT FOR EVERY FAMILY

One of the strongest messages from school leadership is clear: HHIHS is committed to being a welcoming home for all families, regardless of language, background, or immigration status.

The school has expanded bilingual support across key areas, from the front desk and counseling

office to the school nurse and instructional staff. Informational materials are available in English and Spanish, and district communication tools like ParentSquare ensure families receive updates in their preferred language.

But the commitment goes beyond translation. The school plans to continue growing its Family Connections Expo, an event designed to connect families with local resources, community partners, and opportunities available across Hilton Head Island. It’s a space where parents can feel informed, supported, and empowered.

A MESSAGE TO HISPANIC FAMILIES: “THIS SCHOOL IS YOURS TOO”

Principal Schidrich and Assistant Principal Haldenwang emphasized a heartfelt message for Hispanic parents: Your children belong here. Your voice matters. Your family is valued.

The new high school offers students opportunities to grow academically, explore leadership roles, join clubs and athletics, and discover new passions through extracurricular activities. For students

who wish to enter the workforce immediately after graduation, the school is expanding vocational pathways that prepare them with real world skills and certifications.

Leadership also encourages Hispanic parents to stay involved, attend events, connect with other families, and participate in school activities. Strong schools, they say, are built through strong partnerships with families.

LEARNING SPACES DESIGNED FOR THE FUTURE

The new HHIHS campus was intentionally designed to support diverse learning needs, styles, and goals. Classrooms now feature:

• Flexible seating and collaborative spaces

• Areas for independent, small group, and full class learning

• State of the art interactive technology

• Hands on, project based learning environments

Teachers receive ongoing professional development from instructional coaches and administrators, ensuring they have the tools and strategies to support every student, from advanced learners to those who need additional guidance.

These modern spaces encourage creativity, engagement, and personalized instruction. Students can demonstrate learning in multiple ways, collaborate with peers, and access lessons through innovative technology that prepares them for college, careers, and life.

STRONG SUPPORT FOR MULTILINGUAL STUDENTS

HHIHS is deeply committed to supporting multilingual learners and their families. The school offers:

• Language Development Tools

Students have access to language lab software that strengthens English skills while building confidence in communication.

• Co‑Taught Classrooms

Academic classes include integrated language support, allowing multilingual students to learn grade level content

while developing English proficiency alongside their peers.

• Specialized English Courses

Focused on academic vocabulary, reading, writing, and communication skills needed for success across all subjects.

• Creative and Collaborative Learning

Students participate in hands on activities in the arts, language development, and academics, spaces where they can express themselves, connect with classmates, and grow socially and academically.

• Family Engagement

The school prioritizes accessible communication and ensures multilingual families feel informed, welcomed, and included in their child’s education.

EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO AIM HIGHER

HHIHS encourages all students, including bilingual and multilingual learners, to challenge themselves through the AVID program, a nationally recognized initiative that builds academic skills, college readiness, and confidence. AVID helps students succeed in advanced coursework and prepares them for post secondary opportunities.

With individualized support, integrated language instruction, and access to rigorous academic pathways, the new high school is designed to help every student reach their full potential.

A NEW BEGINNING FOR HILTON HEAD ISLAND

The new Hilton Head Island High School is more than a modern campus, it is a reflection of our region’s values: community, opportunity, diversity, and belonging.

For Hispanic and multilingual families, it represents a place where their children can thrive, where their voices matter, and where their dreams are supported.

As the doors open this August, HHIHS invites every family to step into a future filled with promise, connection, and possibility.

USCB: COMUNIDAD, MENTORES Y OPORTUNIDADES

DREAMS

WITHOUT BORDERS:

JENNIFER OVIEDO EARNS A MASTER’S DEGREE IN COMPUTATIONAL

SCIENCE AT USCB

A DREAM THAT ONCE FELT OUT OF REACH

For many Latino families in the Lowcountry, earning a college degree can feel distant. Economic challenges, language barriers, and immigration related uncertainty often stand in the way. Jennifer Oviedo’s journey shows that with perseverance, faith, and hard work, obstacles can become life changing opportunities.

FROM ECUADOR TO THE LOWCOUNTRY: A NEW BEGINNING

Ten years ago, Jennifer and her family left Ecuador expecting to spend only one year in the United States. What began as a temporary adventure became a new life in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Like many immigrant families, they faced sacrifices

and constant adjustments, but carried a strong determination to build a better future.

THE PATH TOWARD HIGHER EDUCATION

College initially felt out of reach for Jennifer due to the high cost of tuition. Before pursuing her academic goals, she worked for two years to save money. With support from her parents and encouragement from the community, she enrolled at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB), where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Secondary Education.

A PASSION BORN IN ECUADOR

Her love for mathematics began long before arriving in the United States. In Ecuador, classmates often turned

to her for help understanding difficult concepts and encouraged her to lead study sessions. “You should be a teacher, you explain math so well,” they would say. These early experiences sparked a passion for education that shaped her future.

USCB: COMMUNITY, MENTORSHIP, AND OPPORTUNITY

At USCB, Jennifer found much more than an academic program, she found a true sense of community. Small class sizes allowed her to build meaningful relationships with professors and peers who supported her growth. “The Mathematics and Education departments are full of professionals passionate about what they do and about the students they teach,” she recalls.

A NEW CHALLENGE: COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE

Inspired by mentors who believed in her potential, Jennifer returned to USCB to pursue a master’s degree in Computational Science, despite not having formal training in computer science. Entering a field traditionally dominated by men, she found extraordinary women who encouraged her to keep going. Through dedication, countless hours of study, and strong faculty support, she successfully completed the program.

EXPERIENCES THAT SHAPE LEADERS

Throughout her journey, Jennifer held a variety of roles: Starbucks barista, manager in training, summer camp instructor, math tutor, and graduate assistant. Each experience helped her develop valuable skills and connect with people from diverse backgrounds.

IMPACT IN THE CLASSROOM: MATH AND BILINGUAL EDUCATION

One of her most meaningful roles was teaching mathematics at Bluffton High School, where she taught courses ranging from Pre Algebra to Algebra II. She used her bilingual skills to support a large Latino student population, helping them overcome both language and academic barriers. Through translanguaging, a teaching approach encouraging students to use both languages, Jennifer created an immersive environment where students strengthened their English while mastering math. “Being bilingual allowed me to connect with my students on a deeper level,” she says.

INNOVATION WITH PURPOSE: A BILINGUAL AI MATH TUTOR

Among her proudest accomplishments is her master’s capstone project: a bilingual, AI powered math tutor designed specifically for Spanish speaking students learning English. Combining her background in mathematics, education, and computational science, the project aims to help students grasp complex content while navigating the challenges of learning in a second language. Though still in early development, it reflects Jennifer’s commitment to supporting the community she knows so well.

CHALLENGES OF AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT

Her path was far from easy. As a non U.S. citizen, Jennifer faced higher tuition costs, work restrictions, visa‑related uncertainty, and financial sacrifices. Her family shared rooms, coordinated schedules around a single vehicle, and made difficult decisions to keep moving forward. She also carried the emotional weight of being far from loved ones and missing family traditions in Ecuador. Despite everything, she remained focused on her goals.

THREE DEGREES AND A POWERFUL MESSAGE

Today, Jennifer holds two bachelor’s degrees, one from Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador and one from USCB, along with a master’s degree in Computational Science. Her message to the Latino community is simple but powerful: “Work hard and never give up on what you want. A ‘no’ is not permanent; many times it simply means ‘not yet.’”

AN INSPIRATION FOR THE LATINO COMMUNITY

Jennifer didn’t start college at 18 like many of her peers. She began at 21, after years of saving money and overcoming obstacles. Looking back, she believes every delay had a purpose.

For students facing financial difficulties, language barriers, or uncertainty about the future, Jennifer’s story offers hope. Success doesn’t always follow a straight path, but with perseverance and the support of family and community, dreams can become reality. Jennifer Oviedo’s journey, from Ecuador to the Lowcountry, from math teacher to computational scientist, shows the transformative power of education and determination.

Her success inspires the next generation of Latino students across the region.

COMIENZA EL AÑO ESCOLAR Y CADA FAMILIA MERECE

SENTIRSE SEGURA

ESCUELAS SEGURAS, COMUNIDADES FUERTES

• Mantenerse informados: seguir fuentes confiables y organizaciones locales.

NUESTRA COMUNIDAD UNIDA

Debemos seguir organizados, vigilantes y solidarios.

THE SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS AND EVERY FAMILY DESERVES TO FEEL SAFE

This August, as our children return to school, every family deserves the peace of mind of knowing their loved ones will come home safely. The start of a school year should be a moment of hope, not fear.

In recent weeks, ICE operations have increased nationwide, with reports indicating a target of up to 2,000 arrests per day. This rise has caused concern in communities across the country, especially among families with school‑aged children. During this same period, two individuals — Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine — lost their lives during enforcement actions where, according to public reports, they were not the intended targets. These incidents have renewed questions about the use of force, transparency, and institutional accountability.

For our families, these headlines are not just news — they are real fears. Every parent deserves to go to work without worry, and every child deserves to focus on learning, not on whether their parents will return home.

SAFE SCHOOLS, STRONG COMMUNITIES

We call on local leaders, school districts, and authorities to ensure that all schools remain safe, welcoming, and fear‑free environments, regardless of a family’s immigration status. Education must be a place of stability, opportunity, and protection. Across the Lowcountry, community organizations continue offering “Know Your Rights” workshops, legal support, emotional guidance, and resources

for families affected by immigration enforcement. Information and preparation strengthen our community.

WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO

• Know your rights: No one is required to open the door without a judicial warrant signed by a judge.

• Stay informed: Follow trusted sources and local organizations.

• Create a family plan: Identify emergency contacts, prepare important documents, and speak with children in an age‑appropriate way.

• Support your community: Share resources, accompany neighbors, and promote safe spaces.

OUR COMMUNITY UNITED

We must remain organized, vigilant, and supportive. A strong community is built when we choose compassion over fear and action over silence.

Together, we can build a place where every child learns without fear, every parent works with dignity, and every family is treated with humanity and respect.

CLIMA SEVERO

SEVERE WEATHER

Summer in the Lowcountry brings more thunderstorms, and with them, an increased risk of lightning. Here’s how you can prepare yourself and your family to stay safe when severe weather approaches.

BEFORE LIGHTNING STRIKES

Keep an eye on the sky. Watch for darkening clouds, flashes of light, or increasing wind. Listen for thunder, if you can hear it, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Lightning can travel long distances and may strike even when the storm is not visible.

CUANDO SE ACERCA UNA TORMENTA

• Seek shelter immediately in a sturdy building or inside a car.

• Avoid open spaces, open boats, and all bodies of water, these are some of the most dangerous places to be during a lightning storm.

IN A CAR

• Keep your windows closed.

• Do not stop on bridges or over water.

• Avoid parking under large trees, heavy branches, or near power poles.

AT HOME

• Turn off your air conditioner. Power surges caused by lightning can overload the

compressor and lead to costly repairs.

• Unplug your computer.

• Do not use a hair dryer.

• Do not take a bath, shower, or wash dishes by hand during a storm.

IF YOU ARE CAUGHT OUTSIDE

• If you are in the woods, take shelter under shorter trees.

• Stay away from poles, metal objects, and tall isolated structures.

• Make yourself a small target: get low to the ground, place your hands on your knees, and keep your head tucked between them.

• Do not lie flat on the ground, this increases your exposure.

• Do not assume you are safe because lightning has already struck nearby. Lightning can—and often does, strike the same place more than once.

REMEMBER

Always keep an eye on the sky

Staying alert and reacting quickly can make all the difference during severe weather.
