Querida comunidad,
Somos hispanos. Somos fuertes. Somos comunidad.
Con cariño y orgullo,
La Isla Magazine

Dear community,
July arrives with pride, celebration, and moments that invite us to reflect. In recent weeks, our area experienced immigration operations in Hilton Head and Bluffton where more than a dozen people were detained. These events create fear, but they also remind us of something essential: we are a strong, hardworking, and resilient community. We are not the stereotypes some try to place on us; we are families who fight, young people with big dreams, and entrepreneurs who build opportunities from the ground up.
That is why, in this edition, we chose to focus on the best of who we are. We celebrate the Month of the Nation by highlighting stories that inspire—like that of Danyela Fusi, a young woman of Hispanic roots who shows how far our children can go when they are supported. We also share the success of Pa’ke Pikes and its founder, Lorena Hernández, a clear example of vision, effort, and perseverance.
In these pages, you will also find our coupon section to support local businesses that continue investing in our community, a guide to Fourth of July events, information from
organizations like Self Help, which continues providing resources to immigrant families, and tips to help you stay safe during this intense summer heat.
Today more than ever, we invite you to stay informed, united, and proud of your community. Let us not allow fear to define us. Let our stories, our achievements, our culture, and our ability to rise define who we are.
We are Hispanic. We are strong. We are community.
With pride and affection,

2025
• 2,331 hogares atendidos
• Más de 6,000 vecinos alcanzados
• 70% participó en múltiples programas
• 32,376 horas de voluntariado
Primer trimestre de 2026
• 1,387 hogares únicos atendidos
• 491 nuevas inscripciones
• 313 referencias a organizaciones aliadas

In the Lowcountry, where our community continues to grow with strength, Self Help and Deep Well are expanding their work to ensure every neighbor has access to education, support, and life‑changing resources. From free English classes and GED preparation to clinics, events, and personalized guidance, both organizations are building a stronger future for Jasper and Beaufort.
This year marks a historic milestone: Self Help is opening two new community spaces designed to bring real opportunities closer to those who need them most.
On June 4, Self Help officially opened the Hardeeville Education & Resource Center, created to meet the rising demand for adult education and workforce development in Jasper County.
The center offers:
• PGED preparation
• English as a Second Language (ESL)
• Job training and skill development
• Digital literacy
• Financial education
• Resource navigation and referrals
• Collaboration with partner organizations
The impact was immediate: summer enrollment tripled compared to last year, confirming the urgent need for these services.
As Courtney Hampson, CEO of Self Help, shared:
“This center represents access to opportunities, trusted relationships, and a deep commitment to walking alongside our neighbors as they pursue their goals.”
2026
Self Help and The Deep Well Project are joining forces to open a Community Resource Center on Hilton Head Island—a shared space that will bring services, organizations, and support together under one roof.
The goal is simple: make it easier for people to get help. Instead of sending individuals
from one agency to another, this center will allow education, referrals, and guidance to happen in a more integrated way.
Hampson explains it clearly:
“When we combine services and offer more than one solution, a neighbor’s chances of success increase dramatically.”
• 2,331 households served
• More than 6,000 neighbors reached
• 70% participated in multiple programs
• 32,376 volunteer hours
• 1,387 unique households served
• 491 new enrollments
• 313 referrals to partner organizations
Earning a GED or becoming fully bilingual can increase annual income by up to $9,000. That’s why Self Help’s education team not only teaches, they motivate, support, and guide each neighbor toward a more stable life with greater opportunities.
Self Help and Deep Well are proving that when a community comes together, progress is inevitable. For our Hispanic population— hardworking, resilient, and growing, these new spaces represent open doors to education, employment, health, and overall well‑being.

In Bluffton, where stories of migration, sacrifice, and family dreams intertwine with the spirit of the Lowcountry, a young artist is making her mark both within and beyond our community. Danyela Fusi, daughter of an Ecuadorian mother and Italian father, and a proud American citizen, represents the essence of who we are as a Latino community: resilience, creativity, and a deep desire to contribute something meaningful to this country.
Her story arrives at a special moment. As we celebrate the 4th of July, Danyela embodies the values that shape this nation: freedom, diversity, and opportunity. Her talent is a reminder of how immigrant families enrich and strengthen the United States.
Danyela grew up between two cultures that shaped her character and artistic vision.
“My mosaic identity gave me resilience, creativity, and a unique perspective,” she shares. From her mother she learned strength; from her father, discipline. That blend is reflected in her art, where she celebrates the beauty of cultures, traditions, and the stories around her.
As a biracial, second‑generation young woman, she sometimes felt “between worlds,” but found in art a space to embrace her identity. “Being different is something to celebrate,” she says.
During a difficult period at the start of High School—being the only Latina in her class—art became her refuge. Her sketchbook became her voice, her freedom, and her way of transforming emotions into something meaningful.
Her talent led her to win first place in a national art competition with a poster that integrated flags and symbols from several Hispanic countries—a piece that celebrated her heritage and Latino pride.
At 17, Danyela is graduating in the top 10% of her class at Bluffton High School. She has been an athlete, volunteer, and a positive leader for Latino youth.
She has served the community through her art at events such as Mayfest, Bluffton Youth Sports, and various school projects. One of her most meaningful moments was face painting during Opening Day at Oscar Frazier Park.
“Seeing the children’s joy showed me the power a simple brush can have,” she recalls.
She has also participated in The Memory Project, creating portraits for children in Malawi and Honduras.
Accepted into several universities, Danyela chose to study Art at Winthrop University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, where she will explore design, historic architecture, and the integration of art into spaces.
She recently advanced to the final rounds of the national competition America’s Most Artistic Kid, yet she remains admirably humble.
“I want to become the brush of the world,” she says, reflecting her desire to represent authentic stories and connect cultures through art.
This year, Danyela received a special scholarship awarded by the Lowcountry Immigration Coalition, created in memory of María Guadalupe Cortes Vega, a young woman from the Lowcountry who passed away at a very early age.
For Danyela, receiving this scholarship was deeply meaningful. “It’s more than financial support; it’s an honor that recognizes my story, my parents’ sacrifices, and the strength of our immigrant community,” she shares. With gratitude, she promises to honor María Guadalupe’s legacy by using her art to serve, inspire, and proudly represent the Latino community.
In this month of independence, Danyela imagines a future where her art inspires, connects, and opens doors for other young Latinos..
“I want future generations to know their voices matter and that their identity is a strength.”
Her story is the story of many immigrant families: hard work, big dreams, and a deep love for the culture that defines us.
At La Isla Magazine, we celebrate her talent, her discipline, and her heart.
And we know this is only the beginning.

In this month of pride and celebration, La Isla Magazine highlights the story of Lorena Hernández, a Latina entrepreneur who turned a moving dream into a full restaurant. Pa’ke Pikes was born in a food truck, expanded into a small buffet, and now opens its doors in Bluffton.
Lorena says it all began with “a vision, a plan from God.”
Those first days in the food truck were intense and filled with gratitude. Her daughter, only nine years old at the time, once told her she would have a restaurant someday. Today, that childhood prediction has come true.
Long lines and the summer heat led her son to suggest a change: tables, chairs, and a buffet style setup. That idea became a fast, fresh, and comfortable space.
“We do everything for our customers,” Lorena says.
Customers from Bluffton and even Savannah asked for a closer location. When the opportunity in Bluffton appeared, Lorena didn’t hesitate: “A door opened, and we jumped in.”
“I love my culture,” she says. Her traditional seasonings and some ingredients come directly from Honduras. Every dish keeps her essence alive.
“Don’t give up. Keep going. Don’t stop dreaming.”
Lorena began selling food from her apartment. Today she runs a restaurant. “Everything starts in the mind. Begin with what you have.”

The story of Pa’ke Pikes reminds us that Latinos don’t just work hard, we build, create, and contribute.
Pa’ke Pikes is more than a restaurant: it is a symbol of Latino faith, vision, and determination.

Primeros Auxilios:
• Beber agua o bebidas deportivas (evitar alcohol, cafeína y bebidas carbonatadas).
• Beber abundante agua o Gatorade.

July and August are among the hottest months of the year, and it’s important to recognize the signs of heat-related emergencies and know how to respond.

Heat stress occurs when your body temperature rises above normal. Symptoms may include muscle cramps, weakness, disorientation, and feeling sick. It can be caused by high temperatures, humidity, lack of air movement, working near hot equipment like grills, wearing too much clothing, or intense physical activity. This often happens at the end of a workday.
First Aid:
• Drink fluids such as water or Gatorade (avoid alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks).
• Move to a cool or shaded area.
HEAT EXHAUSTION
Heat exhaustion occurs when the body loses
fluids and salt through sweating. Symptoms may include extreme weakness, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, or headache.
First Aid:
• Rest in a cool or shaded place.
• Drink plenty of water or Gatorade.
• Loosen clothing to help the body cool down.
• Apply cool, wet cloths to aid cooling.
Heat stroke is a life‑threatening medical emergency that requires immediate attention. There may be no sweating, leaving the skin hot and dry. Body temperature may rise above 105°F. Symptoms can include mental confusion, chills, dizziness, loss of consciousness, convulsions, or coma.
First Aid:
• Call 9‑1‑1 immediately.
• Move the person to a cool area until help arrives.
• Heat stroke can cause brain damage or death if not treated quickly.
Learn the stages of heat emergencies and know how to help.
