Whether this is the first show you’re seeing on our stage, or the seventh this season, we are so grateful to have you as part of the Laguna Playhouse family. Without you, we would never be able to continue to share such incredible performances with our community.

From the MANAGING DIRECTOR

BILL KERLIN

The 2023-2024 season has been full of stellar productions, some that made us laugh, some that made us cry, and some that, like Holmes and Watson, have had us on the edge of our seats in anticipation. All of us at Laguna Playhouse are so proud of everything that we produced on our stage this season, and I am immensely thankful for everyone who was involved in making it all happen.

We are so excited for these great performances to continue on our stage as we head into the upcoming 2024-2025 season. From classic dramas, to lively musicals, the next Mainstage season is sure to delight. We start off strong this summer with the legendary musical, Camelot. Tickets are on sale now for everyone and subscribers should be sure to add-it on to their package, as it is not included in the 7-show packages.

Following Camelot is an exciting lineup of productions, beginning with Don’t Dress for Dinner in the fall, and finishing in the summer of 2025 with Honky Tonk Angels. Be sure to subscribe early for the best seats, savings up to 30%, and exclusive benefits. Be it for a select show, or the full season, it is my hope that you will join us at Laguna Playhouse again in the future to see the amazing talent that takes our stage.

I hope you enjoy today’s performance of Holmes and Watson

A NOTE ON HOLMES & WATSON FROM DIRECTOR

DAVID ELLENSTEIN

Welcome to Laguna Playhouse and our production of Jeffrey Hatcher’s Holmes and Watson.

The excitement of each production for me is always the new insights or knowledge that I will glean from working on it. It might be an inspired or novel look at the human experience. Perhaps it’s a bit of unexpected humor, or a satiric take on customs and society. Sometimes, it’s the brilliance of artistic expression that had managed to elude

Having really only known the Sherlock tales from movies and television, and approaching the second Holmes play I was to direct, I felt it was time to delve into Holmes through its source — the writings of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I asked our playwright Jeffrey Hatcher which books and stories to look at to best understand the context for this particular play. He recommended one book and three short stories: “A Study in Scarlet,” “A Scandal in Bohemia,” “The Final Problem,” and “The Adventure of the Empty House.”

Though I had never really given much thought to the fascination that so many have with Sherlock Holmes, after reading the recommended pages, I finally understood their admiration of the author’s sheer brilliance. Like with Dickens or Twain, it was easy to simply acknowledge them in the pantheon of great writers. But until I took the time to really read them, I didn’t understand the richness and texture of what they had created. So now Sir Conan Doyle’s Sherlock has forever taken an elevated place in my appreciation. Another triumph for the theatre!

I continue to grow and be enriched by my participation in it.

Mr. Hatcher has drawn heavily from the source to weave this dynamic mystery with these well-known characters. Though it is not necessary to be a Holmes aficionado to fully enjoy this play for its skill, intrigue, and sense of drama, fans of the genre will delight in the bonus of recognizing the inclusion of so many classic Holmes details and nuances. It has been an exciting ride to navigate the twists and turns of this intricate and brilliantly constructed script.

My good fortune has been an exceptional cast that jumped in with both feet and brought their talent and sharp minds to each day of rehearsal, and a wonderful design team that grabbed hold of the period and style with relish. It has been a highly satisfying process, filled with imagination, hard work and lots of laughs.

Here’s hoping you enjoy the ride with Holmes and Watson as much as we have enjoyed creating it.

YOUTH THEATRE & EDUCATION

LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE SUMMER CAMPS BEGIN JUNE 24

Laguna Playhouse is proud to offer exciting musical and non-musical summer camps for ages 4-19.

During camp, students will learn to work as an ensemble, build self-confidence, and have a great time while engaging in the performing arts. It is important for children to develop their creativity, empathy, and focus: skills they can use no matter what path they take as they grow into adulthood. Each session will focus on a theme and culminate in a showcase for friends and family! Some themes include Movie Musicals, Rock Musicals, Acting for Laughs, and 90’s Animated Musical Favorites.

Register for a single or multiple weeks. 1-week and 2-week options available

VISIT LAGUNAPLAYHOUSE.COM/EDUCATION-COMMUNITY-ENGAGEMENT for more information on Conservatory Classes, Young Adult Workshops and more!

THE JESSICA HERRON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Laguna Playhouse gratefully acknowledges the generosity of Dana Klein and Jay Herron who have established the Jessica Herron Memorial Scholarship Fund in loving memory of their daughter, a former student of the Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre.

This designated gift to the theatre’s permanent Endowment will help provide scholarship assistance to talented young people seeking to expand their knowledge and skills though our youth conservatory.

For more information call 949.497.2787 x202.
