From the MANAGING DIRECTOR BILL KERLIN
Welcome to the fifth play of our 2023-2024 mainstage season, A Shayna Maidel. Just as the characters in this touching family story had to reinvent themselves when their world changed, so too, did Laguna Playhouse. Now, four years after the global pandemic put live theatre on hold and nearly a year since David Ellenstein and I became your new Artistic Director and Managing Director, I am happy to report that your Playhouse is stronger than ever!
We could not have done this alone; in fact, we have been inspired by the support of our loyal subscribers and donors who have shown us that they believe in our work. Throughout the season, our directors, designers (sets, costumes, lights, sound, and props), technical craftspeople, cast, and crew have collaborated in new and innovative ways. Our development and marketing staff have scoured the landscape for new funding opportunities from foundations and government assistance and new ways to promote our work to a wider audience. We look forward to reaching ever greater heights with you by our side.
Our recently announced 2024-2025 season is sure to provide some extraordinary nights at the theatre. Read more about it in this program or on our website and get your subscription today! Subscribers get first access to the best seats, save up to 30%, and enjoy other exclusive benefits.
But first, here we are gathered in the theatre for the inspiring story, A Shayna Maidel. We hope you are as moved seeing it as we have been preparing it for you.
Thank you!
Bill Kerlin

A NOTE ON A SHAYNA MAIDEL FROM DIRECTOR DAVID ELLENSTEIN
When I first directed A Shayna Maidel in 1989, I was an early career director. The artistic and human experience that I had with this beautiful play impacted me as an artist and a person deeply. It made me understand more fully the life affirming power that theatre can have when we share our stories and experience them together. That feeling has never left me.
I directed A Shayna Maidel in 2007, and once again was touched and renewed with hope for the resiliency of the human spirit.
So here we are in 2024, and once again we are bringing to life the Weiss family story at Laguna Playhouse. To do this wonderful play justice, it requires a cast of extraordinary actors and designers who are willing to dive deeply into this world, and commit to the subtle nuances woven into the script. To my great delight – I have been fortunate to have this amazing committed team of artists to illuminate this powerful tale. I am ever grateful to each of them.
I am moved by all kinds of theatre. I love crazy comedies. New plays, old plays, musicals and mysteries. But there is something about a play that reaches down deep and touches the soul, that makes me know that the path of creating theatre is worthwhile and important.
Thank you for joining us for A Shayna Maidel.
Warmest regards,
David Ellenstein
