Creating comedy is hard work, and requires precision, skill and painstaking trial and error. Supposedly Bert Lahr, the great comedic actor (the cowardly Lion in THE WIZARD OF OZ movie), when asked on his death bed if it was hard to die, muttered, “Comedy’s harder.”

Two of the funniest plays I have ever produced are UNNECESSARY FARCE and THE OUTSIDER. Both of those plays were written by the wonderfully talented playwright Paul Slade Smith, so I commissioned him to write this brand new play. After discussions, it was decided that Paul would adapt and re-imagine the old Hungarian script PLAY AT THE CASTLE by Ferenc Molnár, and create a brand new work to premiere. To our good fortune, and no slight to Mr. Lahr’s mutterings, this entire process from beginning to end has been delightful. Having Paul in residence with us during rehearsals while we worked on the play was such a boon to the process. An extremely gifted cast of brilliant and skilled actors and our cracker-jack team of designers has allowed our creative time to be filled with collaboration that led to laughter and joy. Our hope is the result we have achieved will lift your spirits and bring the same joy for you. A new theatrical work is always something to celebrate. A bright new child to join the theatrical canon of dramatic literature. So too is a season of plays here at Laguna Playhouse. She just recently closed a sold-out run of THE TEMPEST as Ariel at Antaeus Theatre in LA. Favorite roles include KYRA in SKYLIGHT at ACT, Michelle in FOR THE LOVE OF at the Kirk Douglas, and Raina in ARMS AND THE MAN at The Jewel Theatre. Her most recent television credits include guest starring on “9-1-1” (Fox) and “Legacies” (CW), co-starring on “The Dropout” and “Bust Down,” and appearing in several national commercials. TAUBERT NADALINI (Oliver Adams) is a Los Angeles and New York-based actor, director, and composer. TV: “This is Us” (NBC), “Sterling” (HBO), “Deviants” (Showtime). BARBARA E. ROBERTSON (Charlotte Sanders) is very happy to be making her Laguna Playhouse debut, and working again with Paul Slade Smith (WICKED) and Erin Noel Grennan (THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO). She can be seen in “Somebody Somewhere”; “Working Man”; “LOL,” “Freelancers Anonymous,” Robert Altman’s “The Company” and David Lynch’s “The Straight Story.” She’s received two dozen awards and nominations for her work in theatre productions as diverse as: QUEEN OF THE MIST (Firebrand); A DOLL’S HOUSE PART TWO (Steppenwolf); MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (Milwaukee Rep); THE DETECTIVE’S WIFE (Writers’); WHO‘S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? (Court); LIFE SUCKS (Lookingglass); A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC; THE TEMPEST; HAMLET (Chicago Shakespeare); THE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA; PAL JOEY, HOUSE, GARDEN and HOLLYWOOD ARMS (Goodman); KABUKI MEDEA (Kennedy Center); OTHER THAN HONORABLE (Geva); and the first National Tour of ANGELS IN AMERICA I & II. She most recently won a 2023 ACT Award, appearing as Susan in COMPANY at Coronado Playhouse. A few of her most cherished roles on stage include Emily Webb in OUR TOWN and Millie in THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE. When Noelle isn’t performing, she’s freelance writing, globetrotting, or indulging in a romance novel. Noelle would like to extend a special thanks to her husband, fur baby, acting coaches, mentors, and family & friends for their endless support! PAUL SLADE SMITH (Playwright) is a writer and actor based in Brooklyn, New York. As an actor, his credits include the original Broadway casts of FINDING NEVERLAND, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, and the Lincoln Center revival of MY FAIR LADY. Following its Broadway run, Paul starred as Willy Wonka in the Australian premiere of CHARLIE. His next onstage role: Ebenezer Scrooge in A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Paul was thrilled to be commissioned by David Ellenstein and North Coast Repertory Theatre to create THE ANGEL NEXT DOOR, and is equally thrilled to witness its world premiere production transfer to Laguna Playhouse. Paul’s play UNNECESSARY FARCE, produced in 2015, has had over 325 productions throughout the United States, and in Great Britain, Australia, Singapore, Japan, Austria (in German), Switzerland (in Swiss German), Iceland (in Icelandic), and Canada (in both English and French). THE OUTSIDER will have its 90th production later this year. Paul would like to thank Ferenc Molnár for the plot at the center of this play, and theatre artists and audiences — like yourselves — in whose loving honor this adaptation was written. And lastly, as always, he thanks Erin, who is his Margot and also, naturally, his Olga. DAVID ELLENSTEIN (Director, Artistic Director) Born into a theatrical family, David Ellenstein has worked in theatres across the country. In May 2023, David was named Artistic Director of Laguna Playhouse, after filling the role in an interim capacity since September 2023. In addition David has been the Artistic Director of North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach, CA since 2003. He is the former Artistic Director of Los Angeles Repertory Company and Arizona Jewish Theatre. A veteran of over 300 theatrical productions, he has worked at theatres across the country for nearly five decades, including Coconut Grove Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Alabama, Great Lakes, and California Shakespeare Festivals, Portland Stage, 59E59, The Meadowbrook Theatre, and Colony Theatre. Among the more than 60 productions that David has directed at North Coast Rep, favorites include THE REMARKABLE MISTER HOLMES, which he co-authored, AN ILIAD, DR. GLAS (Streaming), BECOMING CUBA (World Premiere), THE FATHER (West Coast Premiere), TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT, WORDS BY IRA GERSHWIN (World Premiere), FREUD’S LAST SESSION, BECOMING DR. RUTH and A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM. At other venues memorable productions include THE GLASS MENAGERIE (Alabama Shakespeare), A SHAYNA MAIDEL (Gaslamp Quarter Theatre), THE CHOSEN (Papermill Playhouse, The Coconut Grove Playhouse), LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT (Renaissance Theatre), CONVERSATIONS WITH MY FATHER (Portland Repertory Theatre), CYRANO DE BERGERAC (Southwest Theatre Company), CHAPATTI, and ALEXANDROS (Laguna Playhouse). Favorite roles as an actor include Andrey Botvinnck in A WALK IN THE WOODS, Max Prince in LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR and Matt in TALLEY’S FOLLY at North Coast Rep, the title role in HAMLET at Los Angeles Theatre Center and Los Angeles Repertory Company; Tevye in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF at Moonlight Stage, RICHARD III at California Shakespeare Festival; Einstein in PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE at Laguna Playhouse; Calisto in THE ILLUSION and Harker in DRACULA at the Arizona Theatre Company; Jonathan in SIGHT UNSEEN at North Coast Rep and Portland Repertory Theatre. David has appeared in more than two dozen roles in film and television, and has been guest faculty for several universities including California State Northridge and Cal Arts.

THE COMPANY MARTY BURNETT (Set Designer) is the Resident Set Designer at North Coast Rep since 1992. Scenic designed over 250 productions at their theatre. Resident Designer at Coronado Playhouse 1981-84 and Fiesta Dinner Theater 1984-87. Co-owner Props and Drops 1987-91, Designing for Union Plaza, Hacienda and Sahara Hotels and Casinos, Las Vegas, NV. At Laguna Playhouse designed CHAPATTI, ALEXANDROS, and transfer designed MURDER ON THE LINKS from North Coast Rep. ELISA BENZONI (Costume Designer) is thrilled to be working on her eighth season at North Coast Rep including numerous Craig Noel nominated productions, and excited for her work to be coming to the Laguna Playhouse stage. Elisa has also worked on over a hundred productions across Southern California with theatres such as The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, Geffen Playhouse, South Coast Repertory Theatre, Laguna Playhouse, San Diego Repertory Theatre, Diversionary Theatre and New Village Arts. Being Italian born, Elisa has also had the opportunity to work and perfect her craft in Europe. Elisa holds a costume design M.F.A. from UCSD where she currently is an adjunct professor. MATTHEW NOTOVNY (Lighting Designer) is currently the Lighting Designer in Residence for San Diego Musical Theatre as well as North Coast Rep, and his work can be seen at a wide variety of theatres across San Diego. Matthew holds a B.A. in Technical Theatre from San Diego State and a master’s degree in Lighting Design from Boston University. Matthew is married to his beautiful wife Amanda, with five AMAZING children: Ragan, Harper, Heston, Maddex, and Harrison. IAN SCOT (Sound Designer) is a composer and sound designer specializing in the development of new works and installations. His music and designs have been heard at Playwrights Horizons, Roundabout Theatre, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Yale University Art Gallery, Actors Shakespeare Project, Dorset Theatre Festival, Ars Nova, Heartbeat Opera, Yale Repertory Theatre, Space Wing. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Ian has made an extensive career as an A1 for productions with Audible Theatre, The New Group, Signature Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, New York Theatre Workshop, Rattlestick Theatre, Tuacahn Amphitheater, Classic Stage Company, Theatre for the New City, Berkshire Theatre Festival, and others. Ian received his MFA in Sound Design from Yale School of Drama. CINDY RUMLEY (Props Designer) has worked as a Stage Manager at North Coast Repertory Theatre for the last 12 years and has recently started designing props. She had the pleasure of working at Laguna Playhouse as the SM on CHAPATTI. Cindy holds an M.F.A in stage management from UC Irvine. PETER HERMAN (Hair/Wig Designer) has previously designed wigs for over 30 North Coast Rep productions. Peter teaches wig and makeup design at San Diego State University. He is glad to be part of the creative team on this show as it continues to Laguna Playhouse. VERNON WILLET (Production Stage Manager) has had the privilege of working with the Laguna Playhouse for many years. Vernon’s work encompasses many of the Southern California Theatres: North Coast Repertory Theatre, McCoy/Rigby Entertainment, Musical Theatre West, 3D Theatricals, the Rubicon Theatre, San Diego Musical Theatre, Theatre Aspen, Maltz Jupiter Theatre and a myriad of others. He shares his life with director/ choreographer/champion ballroom dancer Cate Caplin. Actors’ Equity Association member since 1983. BILL KERLIN (Managing Director) Originally from Valparaiso, Indiana, Mr. Kerlin brings over 30 years of finance, marketing, and sales experience to the Laguna Playhouse, including 12 years as Managing Director for North Coast Repertory Theatre and 16 seasons as the Director of Administration at the legendary Coconut Grove Playhouse, in Miami. During the time that Bill served at Coconut Grove, it was the largest professional not-forprofit producing theatre in the State of Florida. Mr. Kerlin graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from the University of Miami in 1984. While he completed his Master of Science from Florida International University, he concurrently taught classes at Miami-Dade College. He was also the Chief Financial Officer for Professionals’ Retirement Strategy, a national insurance and retirement planning service firm in Irvine, CA. He has also served as a Board Member for Camposition, a performing arts company whose mission was to push the boundary between contemporary performance and activism through live performance, interactive outreach programs, and professional development trainings.

YOUTH THEATRE & EDUCATION ACTING INTENSIVES WINTER SESSION: JANUARY 16 - MARCH 19 SPRING SESSION: MARCH 26 - JUNE 4 Laguna Playhouse is proud to offer youth acting and theatre classes in conjunction with their fall and spring Youth Theatre productions. Conservatory classes at the Laguna Playhouse nurture students ages 9 - 18 in learning professional skills that will guide them to success in theatre and life. In Conservatory, students learn important acting techniques and methods that are later utilized in full-scale youth productions. With five levels, this program is for passionate individuals who have a desire to learn professional skills, have fun, and explore their creative voices with other committed students. We are thrilled to also be offering Junior Conservatory Classes for students ages 6 to 9 on Saturday mornings starting Feb 3 with a student showcase on March 19. SUPPORTER HIGHLIGHT Diane and her husband George “Kep” Keplinger arrived in Laguna in the early 1970’s, after both having retired from careers as schoolteachers. They built their home here and grew to love Laguna Beach, supporting many local causes. George and Diane were lifelong supporters of the Laguna Playhouse. They were long-time annual subscribers and generous donors to the Laguna Playhouse. Diane also donated her time as a board member to the Laguna Beach Historical Society and was a Docent Coordinator. In addition, Diane was involved with Village Laguna and the Canyon Conservancy. They will be missed greatly by many! George and Diane also made a big difference for the Laguna Playhouse through their Legacy Gift, and we acknowledge their generosity with gratitude and appreciation. By including the Playhouse in their estate plans, they have joined an important group of supporters whose generosity and commitment are ensuring a brighter future for their professional theater.
