YVETTE FREEMAN HARTLEY Tell me about your history with Ain’t Misbehavin’! My connection with Ain’t Misbehavin’ goes way back to the start, back in ‘78, when I joined the First National tour. We went to major cities – Boston, Chicago, and Washington DC. We were on the road for over a year, and then came the surprise – they brought the whole first national cast to New York City. We were taking over from the original cast who went to perform in Los Angeles. Broadway! What first inspired you to make the switch to directing this particular production after having starred in it? Now’s my moment to pay it forward – to share the magic and wisdom of this incredible, significant musical. Plus, I love storytelling, and Ain’t Misbehavin’ is way more than just a revue. Those songs, they’re a journey through Fats Waller’s life and the rich history of his era. It’s not just music; it’s a time capsule of stories that need to be heard. What is your favorite thing about directing? Directing offers a unique perspective and a chance to shape the overall narrative. It’s like being the architect of a production, orchestrating every detail to create a cohesive and impactful story. My joy comes from guiding actors to bring characters to life, making creative decisions behind the scenes, and witnessing the collaborative effort unfold into a captivating performance. After so many years of being involved with productions of this show in some capacity, what keeps bringing you back to Ain’t Misbehavin’ and makes it special? Ain’t Misbehavin’ holds a special place in my heart. The enduring charm lies in its timeless and rich storytelling through music. After all these years, I still feel a deep connection to the narrative, the characters, and the historical essence it captures. Each production offers a chance to rediscover and reinterpret the magic of Fats Waller’s life and the era he lived in. It’s revisiting an old friend and discovering new nuances with each encounter. You’ve starred both on stage and on screens; what is the biggest difference between the two for you, and what makes you continue to love theatre? The dynamic interaction between performer and audience, the shared experience, holds an enchanting essence exclusive to the theater. There’s an undeniable magic in those shared moments that come alive on stage. On the other hand, the screen, with its intimate focus, offers a unique canvas for subtlety and precision. I find immense joy and fulfillment in both these realms of expression. If there’s one takeaway from this show for the audience, what would you hope it would be? I want the audience not only to be entertained but to leave the theater with a tune on their lips and a newfound understanding of the man behind the music - it’s inviting them into Fats Waller’s world and hoping they carry a piece of it with them.

DEDRICK BONNER (Dedrick) is thrilled to be back at Laguna Playhouse! National Tours: Dreamgirls Regional: Ragtime (Pasadena Playhouse); Something Rotten (MTW); Spamilton (Center Theatre Group); Sister Act (Cabrillo); Little Shop of Horrors (Glendale Center Theatre); The Christians (Center Theatre Group); Ain’t Misbehavin (ICT Long Beach); Tarzan (West Coast Premiere). Dedrick is also a vocal coach/ background vocalist, and has worked as a vocal coach and background vocalist to artists such as Beyoncé, BTS, Dolly Parton, Kanye West, Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, Ryan Gosling and Kristen Chenoweth. He has also acted as Musical Director for the 2021 Squarespace Super Bowl ad; featuring Dolly Parton, Proctor & Gamble’s 2019 Super Bowl Ad, Old Navy’s 2018 holiday ad, and “The Preachers” on FOX 11. SUMMER NICOLE GREER (Summer) has appeared most recently in The Bourbon Room’s 44: The Unofficial Unsanctioned Obama Musical understudying as Michelle Obama. She’s also appeared on FOX’S “I Can See Your Voice”, and plays a number of roles as a vocalist at the Disneyland Resort. In addition to theatre she is also a credited Los Angeles session vocalist for many acts including world-renown K-POP group BTS. JENELLE LYNN RANDALL (Jenelle) is a singer, actor, dancer, writer/executive producer and voiceover artist whose Broadway credits include All Shook Up and Brooklyn The Musical. Jenelle’s Off Broadway credits include, Shout, The Joys of Sex and They Wrote That? (with Barry Mann and the late Cynthia Weil). Jenelle’s regional theatre credits include Kiss Me Kate (as “Hattie”), Dreamgirls (“Lorell” opposite Jennifer Holliday), The Christians and Disgraced (both at the Taper). Jenelle’s VO credits include: “Tom & Jerry,” “Rugrats,” “Apple & Onion,” “Scooby Doo,” and “Clarence”. Just returning from Japan in A Christmas Wonderland, she has recently been seen playing the role of Lorrell in Dreamgirls at the New Theatre restaurant in Kansas City, Kansas, Leading lady in RESPECT in Coronado and Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Candlelight Pavilion. She has otherwise been seen at Disneyland as her favorite froggy princess, and has also traveled from Hong Kong Disneyland to Universal Studios Japan and various cruise ships that have taken her all around the world. T.J. WILKINS (Understudy Dedrick & James) is an entertainer through and through. No stranger to the spotlight, he was named Top 12 overall as a member of Team Usher on Season 6 of NBC’s “The Voice”. Music credits include Stevie Wonder, The Jacksons, John Legend and Beyoncé with whom he became Grammy nominated in 2019 for the song “Spirit” from Walt Disney Pictures’ “The Lion King.” As an actor, T.J. has been featured on stage, screen, and television, appearing on networks including FOX, ABC, and Nickelodeon. Most recently, he performed the lead role of President Barack Obama in the stage hit musical 44. T.J. is represented by Abstract Talent. FREDERICK (KEITH) FIDDMONT (Reeds) began his performance career as a saxophonist for legendary vibraphonist, Lionel Hampton. After moving to Los Angeles in 1991, he began a two-year stint with singer Rickie Lee Jones. He has recorded or performed live with Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Luis Miguel, Diana Krall, Christian McBride, Marcus Miller, James Brown, The Temptations, Jennifer Holliday, Natalie Cole, Nancy Wilson, B.B. King, Wayne Brady, Billy Childs, Queen Latifah, Michael Bublé, and John Pizzarelli. As a freelancer, he has performed with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Bob Mintzer Big Band, the Ed Neumeister Big Band, Frank Capp’s Juggernaut, the Luckman Jazz Orchestra, and John Beasley’s Monkestra. Keith has been a member of the award-winning Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra for the past twenty-four years. WENDELL KELLY (Trombone) played on over 300 recordings from CD’s, Film, TV and Radio including the house band on “The Howie Mandel Show”. He’s played with Whitney Houston, Andrea Bocelli, The Temptations, The Count Basie Orchestra, The Four Tops, Clint Black, Quincy Jones, Luther Vandross, Barry Manilow and many others. He recorded on Platinum recordings of Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Fiona Apple and Justin Timberlake (Grammy nom). With MONK’estra, he played on 8 Grammy-nominated and award winning CD’S. Emmy-winning composer with the Fab Four. Has done over 100 tours, 40 musicals. He has also been an educator for over 40 years. FERNANDO PULLUM (Trumpet/Flugelhorn) earned his bachelors of music and masters in trumpet performance from the University of Michigan. Upon graduation, he followed his dreams of becoming an educator and musician and moved to Los Angeles. He spent many years teaching for LAUSD and LACCD. He currently provides free performing arts instructions for over 1200 kids through the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center in South LA. These students have performed with Jackson Browne, Michael McDonald, John Legend, Eric Idle, John Mayer, Ciara, Missy Elliott, Sy Smith, Aloe Blacc, Louis Price, Jhene Aiko and many others. The Pullum Center also maintains a 100% graduation rate. There is a documentary about Fernando’s teaching on Amazon Prime entitled “Growing Up.” As a performer, Fernando has played with Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, Stevie Wonder, Etta James, Placido Domingo, Gladys Knight, Lionel Ritchie, Jackson Browne, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Pharrell, Justin Timberlake, Fishbone, Patti LaBelle, Bruno Mars and many others. Born in Houston, Texas, Scott was first introduced to music at the age of four, where he attended a MommyAnd-Me class centered around the piano. His love for the instrument grew as he got older. As a teenager, Scott attended the prestigious High School for The Performing and Visual Arts where he deepened his love and understanding of jazz. It was also during his time at HPVA where the musician learned how to play bass, which would soon become his primary instrument. Scott’s keen understanding of jazz, as well as Black American music as a whole, has allotted him a myriad of opportunities. On June 11, 2021, Scott released his debut EP “Here, I Am,” a 25-minute reflection of the artist’s time spent in the 2020 Lockdown.
THOMAS “FATS” WALLER (Music) Fats Waller (May 21, 1904 - December 15, 1943) was an AfricanAmerican jazz pianist, organist, composer and comedic entertainer. He was born Thomas Wright Waller in New York City. Waller studied classical piano and organ before apprenticing himself to legendary Harlem stride pianist James P. Johnson. Johnson introduced Waller to the world of rent parties (a party with a piano player, designed to help pay the rent by charging the guests), and soon he developed a performing career. He was an excellent pianist--now usually considered one of the very best who ever played in the stride style-but his songwriting and his lovable, roguish stage personality (“One never knows, do one?”) overshadowed his playing. Before his solo career, he played with many performers, from Erskine Tate to Bessie Smith, but his greatest success came with his own five- or six-piece combo, FATS WALLER AND HIS RHYTHM. Among his songs are “Squeeze Me” 1919, “Ain’t Misbehavin’” 1929, “Blue Turning Grey Over You” 1930, “Honeysuckle Rose” 1929, “I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling” 1929, and “Jitterbug Waltz” 1942. Regionally he’s designed for Center Theatre Group, South Coast Repertory, McCoy Rigby Entertainment, International City Theatre, Pasadena Playhouse, 5-Star Theatricals, 3D Theatricals, Reprise, Ensemble Theatre Company, Laguna Playhouse, Virginia Stage Company, 5th Avenue Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. On the West-End he designed Rolling with Laughter at Her Majesty’s Theatre and was on the design teams for the Broadway productions of Primo, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman in White, The Radio City Christmas Spectactular and the national tour of Blithe Spirit starring Angela Lansbury. Notable projects include four seasons lighting LA Opera, lighting Pope Benedict XVI in NYC and the USA International Ballet Competitions. His music and designs have been heard at Playwrights Horizons, Roundabout Theatre, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Yale University Art Gallery, Actors Shakespeare Project, Dorset Theatre Festival, Ars Nova, Heartbeat Opera, Yale Repertory Theatre, Space Wing. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Ian has made an extensive career as an A1 for productions with Audible Theatre, The New Group, Signature Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, New York Theatre Workshop, Rattlestick Theatre, Tuacahn Amphitheater, Classic Stage Company, Theatre for the New City, Berkshire Theatre Festival, and others. Ian received his MFA in Sound Design from Yale School of Drama. MICHAEL DONOVAN, CSA (Casting) Michael Donovan is the recipient of 9 Artios awards, presented by the Casting Society of America for Outstanding Achievement in casting. Richie Ferris has 3 Artios awards. Other credits include numerous films, TV shows and commercials. Michael is President of the Board for the Foundation for New American Musicals, and serves on the Board for Camp Bravo.
KEVIN WILLIAMS (Properties Designer) Recovering actor and L.A. native, Kevin has spent over two decades working as a designer, fabricator and consultant for clients such as Walt Disney Imagineering, HUB Network, Red 5 Studios and Twentieth Century Fox among many others. Notably, he was the Resident Production Designer for interactive theatre company, Delusion, for seven years: Lies Within (2014), His Crimson Queen (2016), Lies Within VR (2017), The Blue Blade (2018) and Reaper’s Remorse (2021). Kevin is the Prop Department Supervisor for UCLA’s School of Theater, Film & Television and lives in Orange County with his incredible family. Proud member of S.P.A.M. DAVID ELLENSTEIN (Artistic Director) Born into a theatrical family, David has been working in professional theatre for the better part of five decades - from San Diego to Portland, Maine and from Miami to Anchorage, Alaska - and most places in between. At Laguna Playhouse, credits include directing The Angel Next Door, Chapatti, Alexandros and playing “Einstein” in Picasso at The Lapin Agile. Other directorial credits include The Chosen at Paper Mill Playhouse; Halpern and Johnson and Sonia Flew at Coconut Grove Playhouse; The Glass Menagerie, Rocket City and Honky Tonk Angels at Alabama Shakespeare Festival; His Royal Hipness at 59E59 in NYC; and Long Day’s Journey into Night at Renaissance Theatre. As Artistic Director at North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach since 2003, over 60 directorial credits including Way Down River, The Tempest, A Moon for the Misbegotten, The Outsider and The Homecoming. David’s career includes acting credits of playing the title roles in Hamlet at LA Theatre Center and LA Rep; Richard III at California Shakespeare Festival; Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof at Moonlight Stage; Jonathan in Sight Unseen, Max in Laughter on the 23rd Floor and Matt in Talley’s Folly at North Coast Rep as well as over three dozen film and television episodes. BILL KERLIN (Managing Director) Originally from Valparaiso, Indiana, Mr. Kerlin brings over 30 years of finance, marketing, and sales experience to the Laguna Playhouse, including 12 years as Managing Director for North Coast Repertory Theatre and 16 seasons as the Director of Administration at the legendary Coconut Grove Playhouse, in Miami. During the time that Bill served at Coconut Grove, it was the largest
professional not-for-profit producing theatre in the State of Florida. Mr. Kerlin graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from the University of Miami in 1984. While he completed his Master of Science from Florida International University, he concurrently taught classes at Miami-Dade College. He was also the Chief Financial Officer for Professionals’ Retirement Strategy, a national insurance and retirement planning service firm in Irvine, CA. He has also served as a Board Member for Camposition, a performing arts company whose mission was to push the boundary between contemporary performance and activism through live performance, interactive outreach programs, and professional development trainings.

YOUTH THEATRE & EDUCATION ACTING INTENSIVES SPRING SESSION: MARCH 26 - JUNE 4 SUMMER CAMPS BEGINS JUNE 24 Laguna Playhouse is proud to offer youth acting and theatre classes in conjunction with our fall and spring Youth Theatre productions. Conservatory classes at the Laguna Playhouse nurture students ages 9 - 18 in learning professional skills that will guide them to success in theatre and life. In Conservatory, students learn important acting techniques and methods that are later utilized in full-scale youth productions. With five levels, this program is for passionate individuals who have a desire to learn professional skills, have fun, and explore their creative voices with other committed students. We are thrilled to also be offering Junior Conservatory Classes for students ages 6 to 9 on Saturday mornings starting Feb 3 with a student showcase on March 19.
