GUIDED GROWTH

What sets LaGrange College apart? That is the question we began asking last year as the college embarked on a branding initiative. As you can see in the feature story on page 8, we eventually arrived at five “pillars” of the LaGrange experience—five key features that are the essence of this place and its community.

One I particularly love is “Guided Growth.” It refers to the college’s unique ability to help students grow academically, spiritually and socially.

One alumnus described it in this humorous but succinct way: “LaGrange College is the warm hug and kick in the rear for being a successful and loving human.”

I heard recently from a transfer student who wrote to tell me how transformative his first semester with us has been. He described professors and coaches who guided and encouraged, and he detailed opportunities for soulful service. LaGrange was helping him grow and succeed, and he wanted to let me know.

This student also is a member of the LC Football team, which had its own share of success this fall, as you can see on page 16. During this season of hope and celebration, I am grateful for your role in helping all those on the Hill succeed, serve—and grow. Thank you.

Enrollment hits post-pandemic peak This fall, the college’s enrollment increased to 900 students, a new record since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This growth benefits not only our students, but the LaGrange community and region as a whole,” said President Susanna L. Baxter. “We all grow together.”

The college’s undergraduate and graduate populations grew by 11% and 12%, respectively.

“By developing new academic programs, we are reaching more students—and building a reputation as an innovative institution,” she said.

Since introducing its Aviation program in 2023, the college has continued to add new undergraduate and graduate offerings, including Computer Science (major), Neuroscience (minor), Strength & Conditioning (concentration), Manufacturing Engineering Technology (major), Higher Education Administration (Master of Education), Curriculum

& Instruction (Doctor of Education) and Human Resources (major).

The college’s 10 most popular academic programs for freshmen include Pre-Nursing, Sports Management, Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Exercise Science, Computer Science, Accountancy, Engineering, Aviation, Art & Design and Biology.

This influx in students has led

campus housing to nearly reach its capacity. As a result, housing options are being evaluated to accommodate the growing population.

The past two summers, freshman residence halls underwent donorfunded renovations, with upgraded bathrooms in Boatwright, Hawkes and Pitts and new flooring and laundry facilities in Hawkes.

SENIOR PARTICIPATES IN D.C. INTERNSHIP Jenna Pittman ’26, a Political Science/English Writing & Publication Studies double major passionate about social issues and government policies, engaged in legislative operations at the federal level as a summer intern with the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure in Washington, D.C. “I got to see firsthand the ins and outs of the committee’s work, including their public-facing operations and the behind-the-scenes work all the subcommittees contribute,” she said.

During her experience, she contributed to research and legislative tracking, assisted with hearing, markup and briefing preparation and supported the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee through meetings, note-taking and research projects.

Political Science Professor Dr. John Tures said this internship offered a unique perspective for Pittman.

“Most of our students intern for a politician and get a broad view of different areas,” Dr. Tures said. “Jenna’s experience allowed her to take a deep dive into one specific sector. This incredible double-major, who has presented the most papers and published the most articles in our program’s history, was the perfect person for this congressional opportunity.”

Wilkinson joins Servant-Leader Hall of Fame

College achieves Top 10 ranking LaGrange College ascended to the single digits in annual rankings released in September by U.S. News & World Report.

The institution placed ninth among 96 Regional Colleges in the South and was included on the publication’s lists of “Best Value Schools” and “Top Performers on Social Mobility.”

“This honor solidifies our reputation as an academically competitive institution dedicated to providing a close-knit community where students are challenged to achieve more than they thought possible,” said President Susanna L. Baxter.

The “Best Value” rankings are awarded based on academic quality and the institution’s cost after need-based financial aid.

“Through the offering of generous scholarships and grants, we work to help keep expenses from being a barrier for students to receive a transformative LaGrange education,” said Dr. John Head, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Experience.

To develop the 2026 Best Colleges rankings, U.S. News evaluated 1,700 colleges and universities on up to 17 measures of academic quality.

Dr. Jerry Wilkinson HA’19, H’21, former college Trustee and philanthropist who supports and funds the Wilkinson Family Servant Scholars Program at LaGrange College, joined elite company on Oct. 29 when he was inducted into the Servant-Leader Hall of Fame hosted by the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership.

Previous honorees have included higher education and nonprofit leaders, business icons and organizations who “are committed to the well-being of others,” according to the center.

“The Greenleaf organization is simply recognizing something those of us at LaGrange College already knew: Jerry Wilkinson is a compassionate individual who believes in leading by serving others,” said college President Susanna L. Baxter. “His life testifies to his commitment to the core principle of soulful service.”

The Greenleaf Center was established in 1964 by Robert K. Greenleaf, who launched the modern servantleadership movement with his seminal work, “The Servant as Leader.” It is housed at Seton Hall University in New Jersey, where the induction ceremony was held.

THE SUNNY GABLES Alumni House lawn offered the perfect setting for a Fall into Fitness yoga session underneath the home’s towering pecan trees. Sponsored by the city of LaGrange and Mayor Jim Arrington, the event was one of 11 activities designed to get residents moving, connected and healthier.

Dr. Wilkinson is founder and chairman of The Wilkinson Companies, a privately held real estate investment and management firm. In addition to leading national and state realty groups, he has served diverse organizations including the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, Apartment Life Inc., the Atlanta Community Food Bank and LaGrange College, where he helped provide the impetus for LC’s servant scholars program, which offers the only live-worklearn college environment dedicated to community service in the country.

Dr. Wilkinson was introduced at the event by Jeff Lukken, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the college and Director of the Wilkinson Family Servant Scholars Program.

Endowment to help grow Music program Music faculty were elated earlier this year when the news broke: A more than $4 million endowment was being gifted specifically to support Music at LaGrange College.

It was a donation whose seeds had been planted decades before, when a man living in New Jersey since 1970 decided to make the college a beneficiary of his assets. LC was originally one of three, then became one of only two institutions to receive such a gift from the Estate of Dr. John V. Moore Jr. “This gift will make it possible to expand and grow the Music program's offerings, especially in the area of audio engineering and film and media scoring,” said Kim Barber

character and later, his career as an educator.

His mother, despite limited means, began giving to LaGrange College as soon as she was able—a habit of generosity that would echo through her son’s life. Recalling his mother as his biggest inspiration for supporting the college, he also noted,

“Everyone at LaGrange College has always been very kind to me.”

That kindness inspired John to ensure the legacy of his mother—and her belief in education—would live on.

“I cast around for the best way to remember my parents, especially my mother,” he said. “She started a scholarship fund, and I decided the most appropriate way I could honor her was through a bequest that has eternal value—in perpetuity.”

About John V. Moore Jr. Growing up in the small riverside community of Bolton, Georgia—near the banks of the Chattahoochee River—John Moore learned early the quiet power of faith, family and hard work. This environment shaped a young boy who would go on to dedicate his life to education and service.

His father was a Cedartown native and a Georgia Techtrained mechanical engineer. His mother, Hortense Hughes Moore, brought melody into their lives. A 1927 graduate of LaGrange College with a degree in Music, Hortense also studied voice at the old Atlanta Conservatory and led the choir at Collins Memorial Methodist Church. Music, education and a sense of service were cornerstones in the Moore household.

Though money was scarce, the family was rich in resourcefulness. He grew up with a large garden, chickens, eggs and a hog.

“We didn’t have much, but we had enough,” John recalled in an interview with LC staff in 2011. “And whatever we had, we shared.”

Faith was ever-present. The Moores were ardent Methodists and attended church four times a week at a minimum. In John’s words, “Lying was as big a sin as murder.” Those lessons of moral courage and integrity became the foundation of his

A final gift Creating the Hortense Hughes Moore ’27 and Col. John V. Moore, Sr. Endowed Fund for Music in 2008, John regularly contributed to the endowment in increments of a few thousand dollars, then $1,000 annually until his death in 2023. In October, after going through the legal processes, Moore’s final gift from his estate arrived, imbuing his parents’ namesake endowment with the more than $4 million in funds.

“I have no children, but for 40 years I taught in higher education,” he said in 2011. “My hope is that my students remember me—and that others remember me for having done something for my fellow man that lasts.”

His motivation remained simple yet profound: “To do something for young people and to be remembered.”

Program readies students for fast-paced career The Accountancy program at LaGrange College is doing its part to equip graduates to handle the industry’s changes while adhering to a high professional standard.

“We teach our students to have a commitment to ethics, strong communication skills, an eye for detail and a disciplined work ethic,” said Cindi Bearden, J.K. Boatwright Sr. Associate Professor of Accountancy. Students apply critical thinking and skills-based learning while solving auditing issues in escape rooms and serving Voluntary Income Tax Assistance clients under Accountancy Assistant Professor Samantha Sick.

The program provides the framework for its graduates to take the Certified Public Accountant exam, which recently made a testing change in Georgia.

“The law now allows candidates to qualify with only a bachelor’s degree,” she said. “Previously, 150 hours of education were required to become a CPA. Once the four-part exam is passed, candidates still must meet a professional experience component, which includes working under the direction of a CPA, to gain licensure.”

Alumni of the program have gone

on to work for companies that include Ernst & Young, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Deloitte, Kia and the Internal Revenue Service.

Recently, six graduates have passed all four CPA exams, according to Bearden, including Darius Jordan ’17, Michael Bleimeyer ’20, Matt Eden ’23, Jake Elrod ’23, Gabe Miller ’23 and Ethan Fry ’24.

Bleimeyer said LC’s Accountancy program helped him understand the

“why” of the profession.

“Understanding why helps us continue to solve problems,” he said.

“This has helped me continue to excel in my career.”

Fry said the courses laid a strong foundation for his career.

“Once I set foot into a work environment post-graduation, I knew that I was adequately prepared to deal with the challenges that come with working in the industry,” Fry said.

FACULTY & STAFF ACCOMPLISHMENTS Dr. John Cook, Professor of Philosophy & Religion, presented his paper “Ancient Greco-Roman Evidence of Damage to the Human Body in Roman Crucifixion” in September for a conference on “Stigmata on Body and Soul: Wounds, Tattoos, and Blemishes in Greco-Roman Antiquity and Their Reception in Early Christianity and Church History” at the University of Erlangen in Germany.

Dr. John Tures, Professor of Political Science, wrote a novel entitled “Branded” that was released in November by Huntsville Independent Press.

Rosie Arnold Bolan Mʼ23, Assistant Director of Counseling Services, was named among LaGrange Daily News’ 20 Under 40.

Chapter earns national award Members of LaGrange College’s Alpha Alpha Nu chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha claimed their second Best Chapter Award in August from the National Political Science Honor Society.

In each of the four enrollmentdriven divisions, Pi Sigma Alpha selects six recipients for the annual honor.

“This national award is all about undergraduate research, teaching and presentations by our Political Science majors and minors,” said Political Science Professor Dr. John Tures, who advises the chapter with Jeff Lukken, Assistant Professor of Political Science.

The college’s chapter, which began in 2002, last took home this honor in 2020-21. Those who contributed to this year’s award include past and current members Merideth Baswell, Daniel Cody, Parker Floyd, Ema Turner, Hannah Godfrey, Curt Bonner, Katie Gonzalez, Makenzi Maltezo, Makayla Page, Jenna Pittman and Eli Rogers.

Education event mentors students Building on its partnership with the local school system, the college’s Education Department held its inaugural Let’s Teach Day in October to share with high school students not just the profession but also the heart behind it.

“We had a combined 28 students and three educators from the Teaching as a Profession program at Callaway High School and LaGrange High School (LHS),” said Lyn Perry, Assistant Education Professor and Director of Field Experiences.

Participants rotated through five different team huddles

that were led by LC Education faculty and majors, LC Admissions and Troup County Schools Human Resources.

“It was such a great experience because I got to meet the Education majors and hear their stories about what it’s like in the classroom,” said LHS student Anahi Nolasco-Padilla.

NEW FINANCE MANAGER JOINS COLLEGE In November, the college named Latanya Buckner as its new Finance Manager.

She comes to LaGrange from the Georgia Institute of Technology where she served as director of financial administration for Professional Education. She brings more than 20 years of experience in higher education finance, with a strong background aligning financial goals with institutional strategy.

“Latanya’s expertise in forecasting, managing and analyzing large budgets, along with her ability to lead financial operations teams and collaborate with campus partners, will bring great benefits to our work on campus,” said KeJuana Campbell, Vice President for Finance and Administration.

Buckner holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Brewton Parker College and her master’s degree in public administration from the University of West Georgia.

Her professional affiliations include the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers, the National Council of University Research Administrators, the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources and the Society for Human Resource Management.

ariotti Gym is packed with area high school students.

As they walk by rows of tables—each one hosted by a Southeastern college—the students browse tabletop materials and make their decisions. Will they stop to interact with a representative? Or will they give a polite smile and move on?

Among those college fair tables is one hosted by LaGrange College, and it features new materials created through a recently completed branding initiative. These pieces tell the LaGrange story in a way that encourages students not only to stop at the table, but to envision themselves as part of the LaGrange College community.

“A brand is an opportunity to create connections with others,” says Dean of Admissions Jeremy Mack. “We want to be sure that what prospective students learn about us is not only accurate, but also meaningful and memorable.”

The extensive research included surveys and focus groups with alumni, students, parents of current students, faculty and staff, community and church leaders and high school guidance counselors. In all, more than 550 surveys were tallied, and 75 people took part in face-to-face conversations.

Survey results and focus groups alike demonstrated that LaGrange College embodies several key qualities of a small campus while simultaneously offering students expansive opportunities. Constituents from nearly all populations described LaGrange College in terms such as “cozy,” “closeknit” and “caring.”

Multiple alumni also spoke to the life-changing effects of being a student at LaGrange, where they were not simply listening to lectures but were invited into—and expected to participate in—conversation.

A need for more Work began on the effort over one year ago with a desire to make more people aware of what LaGrange offers today’s students.

“To continue to grow our enrollment, it’s important that we take a careful look at how we are going to talk about this place to the next generation of students,” says college President Susanna L. Baxter.

“One of the things that we wanted to do this past year was to explore what makes us unique as an institution. So, we hired a company to help us do some market research.”

Requests for proposals were sent to 10 marketing firms with a focus on higher education. Two finalists made presentations to campus leaders before a firm was chosen last December.

Then, the real work began.

More than before Key themes quickly emerged as the 5° team considered the survey results and focus group findings. They grouped those standout features into five “brand pillars.”

“Whether you graduated five years ago or 50 years ago, what you should hear is, ‘This still sounds like the same place,’” says President Baxter. “It is still us—the essence of this place.”

These collective characteristics set the institution apart (and they are detailed further in the sidebar story on these pages): Close-Knit Community: When surveyed, 82.1% of students said they are somewhat or very satisfied with the care and concern of faculty and staff for them. The school’s welcoming, relational atmosphere stands out.

“I can simply walk into someone’s office and ask them questions,” said one student.

Learning more about LaGrange The college enlisted Five Degrees Branding (5°), a firm that specializes in working with private, faith-based colleges. Their team quickly went to work, starting with a discovery phase that asked the question “How is the college viewed by its various constituent groups?”

“Our team loves diving into the research, meeting people on campus and analyzing each school’s position in the market,” said Lee Insko, principal and co-owner of 5°. “It was a pleasure getting to know LaGrange College through its people and campus and helping articulate its compelling and unique identity.”

THE ESSENCE OF LAGRANGE LaGrange College challenges the minds and inspires the souls of its students. As a result, they are prepared to become successful, responsible citizens who pursue lives of integrity, service and lifelong learning.

This overarching mission was confirmed by researchers investigating the college and its outcomes. However, using survey responses and face-to-face conversations, the team dug deeper to identify five “pillars” of the LaGrange experience.

These key features will help articulate to the world—and especially to prospective students—what one can expect from a LaGrange education.

PURPOSEFUL PLACE LaGrange College invites students into meaningful experiences rooted in places both physical and spiritual — ranging from the school’s beautiful historic campus to its

Guided Growth: This pillar speaks to the college’s ability to help students grow not just academically, but personally. Respondents identified faculty and staff members who go above and beyond to ensure that the college is guiding its students.

As one student put it: “Mentorships with lots of room for personal and student growth are one of the college’s greatest strengths.”

Purposeful Place: The college’s physical and spiritual roots provide meaning and depth to the LaGrange experience. The historic campus, proximity to Atlanta and ties to Methodism give LaGrange unique connecting points.

In the survey, nearly 80% of students gave above-average ratings when asked about their level of satisfaction with the school’s classroom, library, campus and online learning technology.

“The campus felt beautiful, historic and safe,” said one alum.

Industry Integration: The college is known for preparing students to succeed outside of the classroom and for its partnerships with businesses and nonprofits in the region.

When asked how well LaGrange College prepared them for life and career in practical knowledge in their fields of study, nearly 83% of alumni provided above-average responses.

“Academics and career preparation were critical in my decision to choose LaGrange College,” according to one alum.

Soulful Service: A unique focus on service, leadership and spiritual development offers students opportunities to grow in these areas alongside their academic pursuits.

LaGrange “stood out from other schools because it provided more opportunities for me to serve my community,” said one alum.

More impact When added together, the pillars lead to the overarching theme of the new materials: You Are More. This tagline highlights the college’s deep commitment to maximizing each student’s growth and potential.

It can be amplified like this: “At LaGrange College, we believe that you are more than a name, a number, or a face in the crowd. You have more potential than you know. You are more than enough.”

The theme resonated with current students, says Dr. John Head, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Experience.

“I think Five Degrees Branding knocked it out of the park with the brand pillars and the theme of You Are More,’’ he says. “At our Preview Days and other events, Dr. Baxter tells our students that God doesn’t make junk—that they are a child of God and that they have worth and value in this world. I think ‘You Are More’ perfectly captures that message.

“That was confirmed when we tested the theme with students; it really resonated with them and their experiences here at LC. Now that

INDUSTRY INTEGRATION

Reaching more students During the research and development phase, the groundwork also was being laid for the visual component of the project. A two-day photo shoot of the campus was conducted in early April, and a video crew was on site for two days at the end of the month. 5° developed a signature look for the campaign that features the college’s longstanding red and black with a pop of bright yellow for accents.

Finally, completed enrollment materials were ready for printing.

Featuring a viewbook (full-length brochure), shorter overview brochure, logo-shaped quick-facts piece, academic program sheets, video, tabletop banners and email templates, the new full suite of recruitment publications are now in use.

“The new admissions materials reflect LaGrange College’s innovativeness,” shared Louis H’23 and Mary Kay Smith H’23—the philanthropic investors who funded the new branding. “We are thrilled to see expanded career opportunities in new and rapidly developing fields like aviation, computer science and manufacturing engineering technology. We believe that LaGrange College students will benefit from these new initiatives, not just in the near term, but for many years to come.”

The LC Admissions team reports that the materials are drawing positive responses from prospective students.

“We’re ahead in the number of applications—and some of that is because we’ve been traveling more—but I think it’s also because of the materials,” says Mack. “All the feedback I’ve received from students and from alumni indicates they’re really excited about it.

“It paints a good picture of who we are.”

As a neighbor to Fortune 500 companies, international businesses and growing corporations, LaGrange College is uniquely positioned for partnerships that benefit students, the college at-large, the marketplace and the LaGrange community.

Excellent education and real-world readiness, hand in hand.

CARRYING THE TORCH Homecoming highlights close-knit traditions

The Olympics torch burns only for a season. But at LaGrange, graduates have lit the way for generations to keep the Panther flame bright for nearly two centuries.

At Homecoming 2025, the legacy of past alumni continued through longstanding events, including the 41st Tom Duckett Golf Classic and the Memorial Service.

“Every person in our close-knit family makes up a collage that tells the story of LaGrange College,” says Martha Pirkle, Alumni & Community Relations Director.

Alumni Association President Dr. Joy Baker Leaks ’02 says she cherishes helping students realize the legacy they can leave.

“I want future Panthers to see that their voice, their purpose and their excellence matter—and that they too can create lasting impact rooted in courage, compassion and

community,” she says.

A more recent Homecoming tradition that holds significant meaning in the Panther community is the dedication of new campus benches, given in honor or memory of alumni and friends. Among those who held ceremonies this year include the Association of Black Collegians, friends of the late Carlos Soler ’16, the Class of 1975 and former students of the late Dr. Samuel Hornsby, who taught English at LC. “He didn’t simply teach literature—he taught us how to see, to look more closely and thoughtfully at the world around us, and to value the stories that shape who we are,” says Mary Leslie Hardy ’93.

Exemplary alumni honored at Homecoming A cherished tradition in the campus community, the Alumni Awards luncheon on Oct. 17 celebrated alumni who have attained a high level of success in their careers while also being avid supporters of the college.

“These recipients represent the best of LaGrange College,” said Scott Rivinius, Vice President for Advancement. “We are delighted to share in their successes and honored by their presence in classrooms interacting with current students.”

Robert L. Allen Jr. ’19 received the Outstanding Young Alumni award and J. Christopher King ’88 and Emily Joy Thigpen McCarthy ’04 received Shackelford Alumni Achievement awards.

Allen is a foreign service officer assigned to the U.S. Consulate General in Shenyang, China, which borders North Korea and Russia. Among Allen’s primary responsibilities are providing consular services and cultivating relationships with officials and citizens of the host country.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from LaGrange College and a Master of Global Policy Studies with concentrations in Security, Law and Diplomacy from the University of Texas at Austin.

Previously, he interned with the Department of State’s International Organization Bureau in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Embassy Riyadh’s Public Affairs section in Saudi Arabia.

Allen earned these opportunities after receiving the Thomas R. Pickering Fellowship, which prepares graduate students for careers in foreign service. He was among the less than four percent of applicants chosen as one of only 45 fellows.

King is the director of corporate services at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), a national organization headquartered in Atlanta, where it was established in 1979 by the U.S. nuclear power industry to set performance standards for all commercial nuclear plants. In his current position, he leads the Institute’s communications and administrative services teams to ensure effective support across the organization and the nuclear industry.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in art and design from LaGrange College and completed the reactor technology program for utility executives at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He also works as the communications program director for the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Atlanta Center, which represents more than 120 members op-

erating over 430 nuclear power reactors through four regional centers in the U.S. and around the world. As part of his job responsibilities, King partners with peer directors from global regional centers (Moscow, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai, London) to guide and implement global communications strategies and change initiatives.

He and his wife, Leah ’91, have two adult children, Carson and Kyndal.

McCarthy is the Chief Executive Officer and Creative Director for her eponymous fashion brand Emily McCarthy, founded in 2007 in Savannah, Georgia. Originally focused on stationery and home décor items, the company expanded into women’s clothing in 2019. Since that time, it has grown to an eight-figure business with 400+ retailer locations.

She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design and Photography from LaGrange College.

In the community, McCarthy has served on Leadership Savannah and Blessed Sacrament School Board and volunteers with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Dress for Success, Union Mission, PACK Savannah, Buy Local, Parker’s House and Tharros Place.

She and her husband, Patrick ’04, have two children, Rhett and Lillian.

PANTHER POINTS WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL The team had its best season in a decade, going 10-6 in CCS play and claiming the fourth seed in the conference tournament and sweeping Huntingdon College in the first round of the playoffs. Sophomore setter Julia Damico (North Port, Fla.) and freshman outside hitter Alex Krabs (Boynton Beach, Fla.) were voted first team CCS all-conference while freshman middle-blocker Kaitlyn Smith (Buckeye, Ariz.) earned second team honors.

Damico was also voted Setter of the Year after leading the team with 5.62 assists per set with 52 service aces and a .973 reception percentage with 3.11 digs per set. Krabs was a three-time CCS Rookie of the Week with her 3.05 kills per set mark representing the highest by a Panther since 2012.

MEN'S SOCCER The Panthers had a strong season, earning the fourth seed in the CCS playoffs. Junior defender Dylan DePriest (Newnan, Ga.) was voted second team allconference honors. Senior forward Lucas Duke (Dexter, Ga.) finished fifth in the conference in points, leading the Panthers with six goals and six assists. Senior forward Dylan Bailey (Marietta, Ga.), sophomore goalkeeper Sawyer Williams (Johns Creek, Ga.), sophomore midfielder Olufunmilayo Said (Marietta, Ga.) and sophomore transfer forward Damien Fekete (Columbus, Ga.) were all recognized on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team for their performance both on the field and in the classroom.

WOMEN'S SOCCER The team overcame a slow start to their season to claim the sixth spot in the CCS playoffs, with freshman forward Gabby Worthy (Bremen, Ga.) being voted CCS Rookie of the Year after a thrilling first season that saw her lead the Panthers with seven goals and 16 points, earning her two CCS Rookie of the Week awards and even one Player of the Week accolade. Graduate defender Madison Dekker (Columbus, Ga.) and senior midfielder Kennedi Vowell (Harris County, Ga.) were both recognized on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic AllDistrict team for their performance both on the field and in the classroom.

Football wins championship, advances to national tourney LaGrange College Football had its greatest season in school history this fall, going 10-2 and winning the USA South Championship with a perfect 7-0 record in conference play. It was the second time that LaGrange has lifted the conference championship trophy and the first time since 2008.

With the championship, the Panthers reached the NCAA Tournament for the second time ever. LaGrange traveled to Framingham State University in Massachusetts for the first round of the playoffs where the Panthers prevailed 24-21.

Then in the second round of the tournament, LC went just up the road to Berry College to face the Vikings, the number one team in the region and the only team with a win over them all season. The Panthers left it all on the field, leading 14-8 at halftime and coming within inches of winning when the go-ahead touchdown pass was broken up with less than two minutes remaining. The fairytale season came to an end in an 18-14 loss.

Nine Panthers earned USA South All-Conference honors, with freshman defensive lineman Zymarion Hudson (Cordele, Ga.) being voted USA South Defensive Rookie of the Year, while freshman quarterback Kirk Scott (Richmond Hill, Ga.) was likewise voted Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Hudson, senior safety Deon King Jr. (Vienna, Ga.), senior cornerback Legend Doggett (McDonough, Ga.), junior offensive lineman Aaron Hunter (Dothan, Ala.), sophomore linebacker Ched Smith (Macon, Ga.) and sophomore tight end Mychal Stillwell (Warner Robins, Ga.) were all voted USA South First Team All-Conference. Junior quarterback Henry Brodnax (Newnan, Ga.) and junior running back Michael Hays (Jacksonville, Fla.) were both voted second team all-conference, while junior linebacker Dezmond Jones (Thomasville, Ga.) earned Honorable Mention honors.

Countless program records were broken this season, including the most wins in a season with 10 and the longest winning streak with nine games.

ALUMNA PUBLISHES SELF-HELP BOOK Lauren Hankins, a 2006 LaGrange College Biology graduate, debuted her self-help memoir “Big Boned” this past summer.

The book, which recently became an Amazon Best Seller, describes what Hankins calls “the gray,” a space where healing happens beyond the extremes of all-or-nothing thinking.

“Instead of sharing an upbeat transformation story or glossy before-and-after narratives, I tell the truth about recovery— highlighting the relapses that follow breakthroughs, the exhaustion of striving to feel “enough,” and the slow, tender process of rebuilding my relationship with myself after years of believing that my worth was tied to my body,” she said.

“At its core, the book reminds us that peace will never be found in perfection but in finally coming home to ourselves.”

LANGSTON BUILDS REPUTATION IN SPORTS INDUSTRY For Tyler Langston ’17, landing a halfa-million-dollar contract required patience and trust, two characteristics that the former Basketball player and Business alum strengthened at LaGrange College.

“LaGrange prepared me for my career by doing the hard things,” he said. “Whether it was going through hardship on the basketball court in practices, games or training, I always had to find a way to overcome obstacles to reach our common goal.”

Since 2023, Langston has been the Director of New Business at Knox Sports in Tampa, Florida. He also serves on LC’s Sports Management Club Advisory Board.

In September, he returned to his alma mater to share his expertise with students at a Sports Management Club event. He emphasized to them the importance of connections and diversifying their portfolio.

“Building your network is your biggest asset in the sports world,” he said.

“Always be open because there are so many roles in this industry and you never truly know what best suits you until you get engaged in it.”

SUSAN ANDERSON HANCOCK HA’15 Longtime college staff member Susan Anderson Hancock passed away on Aug. 2, 2025.

Hancock was part of the fabric of LaGrange College for nearly four decades. After her graduation from Berry College in 1975, she came to work in the Alumni and Community Relations Office where she remained until her retirement in 2015. Colleagues fondly recall her meticulous attention to detail and her extraordinary memory.

She was married to Ray Hancock for 34 years, and their daughter, Catherine Hancock Garman ’08, grew up on the Hill.

Marcia Langham Brown, who taught art and design at the college for 35 years, was named an honorary alumna during the college’s Homecoming awards luncheon on Oct. 17.

She came to the college in 1987 as an adjunct assistant professor of art and design.

April 18 LC Baseball Alumni Day

Brown received a bachelor’s degree in drawing and painting from Guilford College and a master’s degree in printmaking from the University of Georgia.

May 9 Commencement

During her tenure at LaGrange, Brown served as professor and chair of the Art and Design Department and the Fine and Performing Arts Department. She oversaw the creation of the Graphic Design major.

August 1 LC Day at the Braves

She received the Vulcan Materials Company Teaching Excellence Award in 2022.

Since her retirement in 2023, she enjoys traveling, visiting family and friends, cooking and reading.

Award-winning producer visits Music students David “Swagg R’Celious” Harris ’09, an Emmy and Grammy Awardwinning producer and songwriter, returned to his old stomping grounds on Oct. 14 for an in-depth discussion and interactive workshop held during Homecoming Week.

Currently an adjunct professor at New York University, Harris has achieved numerous accolades over his career, including a Grammy in 2019 and an Emmy in 2022 for his producing and

songwriting work on projects with the musician H.E.R. The college’s morning event, hosted by the Music program and Black Male Initiative, featured a question-andanswer session where Harris shared with students about the path he took to get into his profession and his insights on the industry overall. In the afternoon, he led a master class for students at West Side, where he discussed his creative process and highlighted the importance of sonic composition in music production.

Harris told students that networking now can benefit them in the future.

“It is a communitybased industry,” he said.

“Develop bonds with people on their way up. Building those relationships will help you navigate through the times you experience valleys in your career.”

Achieving success in the creative arts field, Harris said, involves taking risks and learning from failure.

“I love the idea of failing out loud,” he said. “This is a progressive attitude of learning how to navigate those rejections in life. You only need that one yes that can change the trajectory of your career.”

Staying authentic, Harris said, is key to standing out in the industry.

“Don’t give your light to fit in any circumstance,” he said. “Stay true to your creativity. That is what makes you get noticed.”

While accolades come and go, Harris said it is his love and passion for creating that drives him.

“The pureness and childlike excitement are what keep me going when experiencing mentally straining moments,” he said.
