s we continue our journey through 2024, I'm delighted to share the progress and achievements of the LaGrangeTroup County Chamber of Commerce. This quarter, the Chamber has been proactive in hosting events and activities that enhance our members' experiences and contribute to the region's vibrancy.

We hosted a State of Community on Housing & Real Estate, bringing together experts and stakeholders to discuss important trends and challenges in the housing market. The Chambermasters Golf Tournament was a great success, providing an enjoyable day of networking and camaraderie. Additionally, we held three nights of Candidate Forums and several Candidate Meet & Greets, fostering an informed and engaged voting body. Our three Business After Hours events offered valuable opportunities for our members to connect and collaborate. We've also celebrated ribbon cuttings and held Early Bird Breakfasts that covered a range of topics, from water and natural resources in Troup County to our current financial outlook.

L

ook better, feel better.

That’s the message behind a boom in aesthetic medicine that has seen at least five new facilities open in LaGrange in the past three years. The new “med spas,” as they are known, include LivWell Health, Willow Medical Aesthetics, Renew Infusion and Wellness, LaGrange Body Lab, and Beauty Bar, which opened as a salon in 2019 and added med spa and wellness services three years ago.

The local trend in medical aesthetics reflects a global phenomenon, providers say.

“Aesthetics has exploded. It’s a $100 billion industry,” said Rex Campbell, a nurse practitioner and Chief Health Officer at Beauty Bar. Several factors account for the rising popularity of aesthetic procedures, including advancements and innovations in medicines and technology, noninvasive techniques that increase results and reduce down time, and increasing awareness and acceptance of aesthetic treatments.

Social media and the pandemic also played a role, local providers believe.

“We saw a lot of ourselves during the pandemic, and that led to a tick up in interest in aesthetic procedures,” said Dr. Holly Dawson of Willow Medical Aesthetics.

Simultaneously, a heightened focus on wellness has helped erase the stigma associated with procedures, like antiaging injectables such as Botox.

“People are a lot more accepting now,” Dr. Dawson said.

Providers emphasize that a “med spa” is about more than beauty. Several offer primary health care and/or wellness services, like infusion therapy. Better overall health is a goal.

Therapies like IV hydration, for example, improve appearance because “you look better when you are well hydrated,” said Dr. Joy Baker of Renew Infusion and Wellness, but also enhance health by delivering “bioavailable vitamins” and other health-promoting ingredients.

“You feel a difference,” Dr. Baker said,

explaining that vitamins that go directly into the veins are absorbed at an 80 percent higher rate than oral vitamins.

Weight loss is another area in which aesthetic medicine can enhance health.

“Weight loss is a great trend in aesthetic medicine,” said Jordan Martinec of LivWell Health. ‘We have seen profound improvements in things like metabolism, energy levels and joint pain.”

Dr. Terry Alford of LaGrange Body Lab, which offers treatments designed to reduce body size and tone muscles, says helping people look better can inspire them to make other needed changes.

“If I can use this as a megaphone to get people to change their eating and exercise habits, then it’s a good thing,” Alford said.”

In addition to esthetics, their services include primary and immediate care, telemedicine, laboratory services and subscription healthcare plans.

Campbell says people are starting esthetic treatment younger these days, in part because “we can do more with less down time,” but also because it is more affordable to have esthetic treatment here than in larger cities.

“We offer a level of service that once required travel to Columbus or Atlanta,” he said, noting that he and French have multiple certifications, including from the American Academy of Facial Esthetics.

Today’s clients are also very open about seeking anti-aging and other treatments.

“The axis has turned,” Campbell said.

“They want you to know. They want validation. Everybody wants to know where you are going and what you are doing.”

Campbell sees a stronger focus on wellness among the current generation and thinks that’s a positive.

“It’s OK to focus on yourself. Don’t be selfish, but don’t hesitate to make your own well-being a priority,” he said.

LaGrange Body Lab 206 Smith Street LaGrange Body Lab has been open just a few months, but owner Dr. Terry Alford says the business was 25 years in the making.

It’s been FDA approved in the U.S. for three years and in Canada for seven.

A local family practice physician since 1999 and currently an owner of Hometown Family Medicine, Alford says he’s been seeing patients who want and need to lose weight “since the day I started.”

The truFlex device is used for “rapid muscle sculpting” in 15-minute sessions and mimics multiple workouts. Company literature compares it to doing “54,000 crunches in just one session.”

Diet pills have had limited effect on the epidemic of obesity and diabetes, and the newer, highly popular injectibles are helping many, but are expensive and may have side effects, he said.

The truFlex treatment is effective for those seeking to tone their bodies.

People who are unable to exercise can benefit from it, as well as people with sagging skin from major weight loss, Alford said.

He started LaGrange Body Lab to take a totally new approach, offering truSculpt and truFlex, new technologies that, in the words of manufacturer Cutera, “push the boundaries of aesthetics.”

Dr. Alford says he was completely skeptical when he first saw a poster saying patients could lose 24 percent body fat on a treated area in one 15 minute session.

“It sounded too good to be true,” he said.

Alford still enjoys his regular patients every day and has no plans to give up his Hometown practice, but he’s always had an interest in aesthetics.

“This is a niche I see to help people change their body size that hasn’t been available here,” he said.

What got his attention, he said, was a demonstration in which a patient with love handles had treatment on just one side and the difference was plain to see.

He began researching, contacted three Georgia facilities that use the technology, studied some more and eventually came to a conclusion.

“Yes, it works,” Alford said “The most important thing to me is my reputation.

I would not have pursued this if I wasn’t convinced it works.”

TruSculpt uses sensors to break up fat cells that are subsequently absorbed by the lymphatic system. It is noninvasive with no pain and zero downtime. Patients lose inches after the first treatment with 12 weeks recommended for optimal results. It’s used on problematic areas, including abdominal fat, love handles flanks, lower legs, inner thighs and chin.

“This is not for 400-pound people,” Alford said. “It appeals to me because

LivWell Health recently marked its first anniversary as a multi-disciplinary wellness collective with the motto “The Care You Deserve.”

Physician Assistant Jordan Martinec, one of three owner/providers, said the group, which also operates UrgenCare clinics in LaGrange, Hamilton and Auburn, was planning to open LivWell sooner, but the pandemic got in the way.

“We were making plans in 2020 and were about to dive into it when the pandemic hit,” he said.

Planning continued, however, and the group of board-certified medical professionals, which also includes nurse practitioners John Veal and Ryan Gatens, began providing treatment in February, 2023.

The first “beauty treatment” involved refurbishing the basic office building into a sleek and modern center with an emphasis on comfort, eye-appeal and top-notch equipment. LivWell now aims to live up to its name, providing primary care, weight management, IV hydration and esthetic services.

“Our pillars are weight loss, aesthetics and IV hydration,” Martinec said. “We are also a place for true preventative medicine. Our goal is not to wait for a problem and fix it, but to prevent chronic disease, diabetes and cardiovascular problems.”

LivWell also works to help individuals achieve their ideal health, appearance and well-being by developing healthier habits. They seek a balance between medicines and procedures and better lifestyle choices in nutrition and exercise.

“We don’t push” procedures, Martinec said, explaining that during consultation providers seek to learn the patient’s expectations, what they want to do and what they don’t want.

“My goal is to make people feel better, to be encouraging and to make the visit as painless as possible,” he said.

LivWell’s certified esthetician Allie Buttrill spends her days making patients look and feel better with quality facials and a variety of other treatments.

She also works to undo damage done by smoking and tanning beds.

She loves her work, she said, because she gets to know her clients and feels like she is really helping them.

“At Renew, the doctors do the injections. We take it really seriously. It’s very important to know anatomy and good technique,” Dr. Joy Baker said.

She believes her father’s experience as a dentist is a significant advantage, for example, in lip procedures.

Renew also offers an extensive menu of IV hydration therapies customized for what an individual client wants to achieve. IV “cocktails” are designed to boost energy or immunity or to provide a brain boost (focus and clarity).

There’s even one known as “hangover helper” and another called “Glow Up” that promotes healthy hair, skin and nails.

Willow Medical Aesthetics 305 W. Haralson Street Dr. Holly Dawson was approaching 40 and starting to think about maintaining her youthful skin and appearance. She learned many local women were driving out of town for injectables and other antiaging services.

A pediatric hospitalist at Wellstar West Georgia Health and mother of two young children, Dr. Dawson didn’t have tons of time for out-of-town travel. She did have a keen interest in aesthetic medicine and her own search got her and her husband, Wellstar emergency medicine director Dr. Brandon Dawson, wondering how they might bring more aesthetic services to LaGrange.

“We did a deep dive,” Dr. Holly Dawson said, “asking ourselves if this was something that we could bring to our town.” After considerable soul searching, study and visits to med spas in other communities, they took the big step.

Willow Medical Aesthetics, a state-of-the-art med spa providing a variety of professional treatments, opened a year ago this month.

But before they began transforming faces, the Dawsons transformed the former VFW building on Haralson Street into a gleaming, tastefully furnished and fully-equipped medical spa.

The Dawsons and a staff of nurses and aestheticians offer a variety of medical grade cosmetic treatments in a relaxed and comfortable environment. These include Botox and other antiaging injectables, facials and hydra-facials, laser hair removal, laser vein treatment, skin resurfacing, skin rejuvenation, dermaplaning, chemical peels, hair restoration and more.

Dr. Holly Dawson, who still works several days a month at the hospital, said the goal of Willow’s aesthetic procedures is not to produce drastic changes but to get results that look natural and make people “more confident and better versions of themselves.”

One year in, she’s more than pleased with Willow’s progress.

“It’s a happy anniversary,” said Dr. Dawson. “We have had a lot of fun and built a lovely, loyal clientele.”

Career Makeover Esthetics Program at West Georgia Technical College Offers Pathway to Success

T

he current boom in the med spa industry has sparked a corresponding rise in job opportunities for estheticians, licensed professionals who provide skin care and related services to clients.

Esthetics is definitely trending as a career choice in West Georgia, according to DeeDee Patterson, program director of Cosmetology and Esthetics for West Georgia Technical College.

WGTC offers a one-year certificate program in Esthetics at its Newnan and Waco campuses and may expand it to the LaGrange campus in the future, Patterson said. Demand is high for the classes, which enroll about 20 students each.

“We are almost full for the class that will start in Newnan in September,” Patterson said.

The WGTC Esthetics Certificate program is 33 credit hours, 1000 contact hours, and takes 3 semesters to complete. The cost of tuition and fees is approximately $4,500 to $5,000. Students can pursue esthetics as a standalone or combine it with cosmetology studies.

The program attracts students of all ages, from new high school or GED graduates to experienced workers looking for a new direction.

Those who complete the program and pass both written and practical state board exams are licensed to practice anywhere in Georgia and typically have no trouble finding employment, Patterson said.

“We get calls from employers all the time asking when we will have more graduates,” she said.

Allie Buttrill, a licensed certified esthetician in LaGrange, had planned to study nursing but opted for esthetics when plans for LivWell Health, one of several new med spas, began taking shape. A little over a year in, she is thrilled with her career choice.

“It doesn’t feel like work,” she said. “It feels like a hobby."

Buttrill finds satisfaction in getting to know the clients she sees for facials, skin rejuvenation, hair removal and more.

The Life and Legacy of the Late LaGrange Mayor – the Rev. Dr. Willie T. Edmondson

T

he Rev. Dr. Willie T. Edmondson left an indelible mark on the City of LaGrange and our community. Sadly, the late Mayor Edmondson passed away on February 16, 2024. As the first African American Mayor in the City’s 195-year history, Edmondson broke barriers and paved the way for inclusivity and diversity in leadership roles.

Edmondson was a true pillar in the community. He served as lead pastor to one of the largest churches in Troup County, Bethlehem Baptist Church, and he owned one of the main funeral homes in town, Lakes-Dunson-Robertson Funeral Home. Edmondson truly cared for the citizens of LaGrange in every part of his life and treated each person he encountered with kindness and respect.

Mayor Edmondson began his career with the LaGrange City Council in 1998 and served the community for twenty-four years. He was elected mayor in November 2022 and took office in January 2023.

During his tenure as an elected official Edmondson helped to bring important economic and community development projects to LaGrange including Great Wolf Lodge, The Thread Trail, the Downtown Corridor, and the Griggs Recreational Center, among others. One of his main goals as Mayor was to unite LaGrange.

He hosted the first-ever Mayor’s Christmas Ball in December 2023 to not only unite the community but to raise money for scholarships for local youth. The event also collected hundreds of toys for local children who might not have had a Christmas. It was a sold-out event that brought the all parts of the community together for a wonderful cause.

The City recently honored Mayor Edmondson’s legacy by hosting a “Ride for Mayor Willie T. and Car Show” on Saturday, April 13th. The money raised went to Mayor Edmondson’s Memorial Scholarship Fund. Mayor Pro Tem Quay Boddie wanted to honor Edmondson with the car show to give a nod to his love for cars, and a processional ride to Edmondson’s childhood home in Antioch.

“Mayor Edmondson was a mentor to me and I always looked up to him. I know he had a love for cars and I thought this was a good way to bring the community together, keep his legacy alive, and raise money for his scholarship fund.” The scholarships will be awarded to four local senior high students in the summer of 2024. “It’s important that we make sure his legacy lives on. We will never forget him and what he has meant to our entire community,” Boddie said.

Intersections of DEI and Entrepreneurship

T

he topic of DEI has gained traction in the last 70+ years as business owners and professionals have recognized its importance in promoting social justice, driving innovation, improving employee engagement, and ensuring long-term business success.

DEI has spearheaded profound cultural transformations, catering to the needs of marginalized communities and forging safer environments worldwide.

An illustration of this transformation is discernable within the evolution of the beauty industry. A retrospective review of the American beauty sector and its culture dynamics underscores the profound intersectionality between DEI principles and entrepreneurship.

The early 1900s saw the birth of multinational brands like L’Oréal, Revlon, and Elizabeth Arden. During this time, mainstream aesthetic ideals dominated the beauty industry – which created significant marginalization for minority groups. In response, entrepreneurs like Madam C.J. Walker and Anne T. Malone created the first commercialized African American hair care products. These efforts created pathways to generational wealth and financial independence for women and people of color.

By the mid-1900s, the Civil Rights Movement fostered greater awareness of racial and ethnic inequality and

fostered a shift in cultural norms around beauty. Following the Vietnam War and a spike in Vietnamese immigrants, the entrepreneurial spirit of these new Americans gave rise to the Nail Salon industry. This industry provided a means of creating wealth and economic independence for these new Americans.

Toward the end of the 20th century, growing support for diversity and inclusion (now routinely referred to as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion - DEI) was seen across countless beauty brands as they began to offer a broader range of products tailored to diverse skin tones and hair textures. At consumers' insistence, brands began to prioritize the needs of diverse populations.

Intercultural beauty trends from Latin American cultures (like Dominican salons and Brazilian blowouts), K-Beauty, and Ayurvedic beauty treatments reached mainstream popularity.

Consumers also broadened their focus on beauty to include holistic health and noninvasive services. This demand launched a pathway for the $15 billion medical spas or “medspas” industry. 66% of all US medspas are small businesses; and, they report exponentially favorable profitability with 88% of medspas projecting revenue increases in 2022. Innovations in this field to meet the needs of diverse consumers is ongoing.

The 2000s also witnessed the ascent of

social media platforms as catalysts in the beauty industry. Driving these platforms are influencers, who, in many ways are small business owners in their own right.

Widely known influencers like Jackie Aina, Nikkie de Jager, Michelle Phan, Bretman Rock, and LaGrange’s own Andrea Renee and Devorah Story drive commerce in digital markets and generate user engagement on platforms. For example, YouTube, founded in part by Steven Chen (a Taiwanese American executive) and Jawed Karim (a Bangladeshi-German American executive), boasted 169 billion views on beauty content in 2018. This represents a 129900% increase in just 12 years.

The profound influence of DEI and entrepreneurship in the beauty industry, both in the US and globally, is truly remarkable. These diverse communities took initiative, organizing themselves to address their beauty needs when mainstream companies failed to adequately serve them. In doing so, these trailblazers fostered inclusivity and equity within the beauty realm on their own terms and paved the way for economic empowerment and prosperity.

“The new light upgrade at Callaway Stadium is exciting for our community as this is the first lighting upgrade since 1958,” said Troup County District 4 Commissioner Morris Jones. “The new LED lights are brighter than the previous lights, and we were able to improve the visibility on the field and around the stadium with 4 poles versus 8. Considering these lights are LED, this should help with electricity costs when events take place at the stadium.”

By utilizing LED bulbs, the new lighting system is far more energy efficient and cost effective for Callaway Stadium, which is frequently used by the Troup County School System, LaGrange College, and Troup County Parks & Recreation.

aking a look around the lovely landscape of Troup County, one can surely see the old adage “April showers bring May flowers” coming to life. After many gloomy, wet days, beautiful blooms and continued growth of vegetation begin to serve as a gentle reminder that all things can adapt, grow, and show their beauty despite stormy weather. That reminder can be applied to circumstances in our lives, as well.

At CASA of Troup County, our staff and volunteers tend to a different local landscape but one that can yield beauty that rivals that of the gardens at Hills and Dales. Children being served in foster care in Troup County due to abuse or neglect are weathering a storm no one should face. At CASA, we advocate for the needs of those children on a daily basis. Community partners gather resources to provide healing, balance, and growth for those children. During this growth process, our CASA Volunteers

serve as a constant source of support and stability for these children. When permanency is achieved, either through reunification, guardianship, or adoption, watching them flourish and bloom all over again is a beautiful reminder of our ‘why’ in this work.

As the Director of CASA of Troup County, I am charged with raising awareness of these issues and cultivating community engagement in advocating for the children we serve and for the health and wellness for all the children of our community. Volunteering, donating, lending your voice, sharing your resolve to help end child abuse with your staff and colleagues…. all of these efforts assist the mission of CASA and in turn better fertilize the soil for children of Troup County to bloom, grow and thrive.

Headrick receives Certificate in School Management & Leadership from Harvard

The LaGrange City Council officially appointed Patrick Bowie city manager in February.

Bowie began working with the City of LaGrange on August 22, 1988, as the Assistant Director of Utilities. He was promoted to Director of Utilities in July 1992. In this capacity, he oversaw the water, sewer, natural gas, and electric utility divisions, as well as Customer Service and the Utility Service Center.

Before coming to LaGrange, Bowie was employed as a system engineer for the Potomac Electric Power Company in Bethesda, Maryland.

Bowie received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1986 and his MBA from LaGrange College in 1998, and is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Georgia. He has served on the Board of the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG) since 1998 and was Chairman from 2005-2007.

Previously, he served Georgia Energy and Industrial Construction Consortium (2013-present and Chairman in 2014 and 2021), and the Middle Chattahoochee Water Council (2021-present). Bowie is married to Lori Bowie. They have two daughters, Sara and Becca, and two grandchildren, Bo and Ellie.

“I am honored to be named the city manager of LaGrange. I’m excited to take on this next challenge in my career,” said City Manager Patrick Bowie. “We have an excellent team of employees at the City and my goal is to support them as they meet the needs of our citizens.”

“The City Council believes Patrick is the best candidate. He has the experience of running utilities for decades and he is extremely qualified to run the City,” said Mayor Pro Tem Quay Boddie.

Combining expertise in managing teams and organizations with a commitment to school and instructional leadership, this program integrates best practices to address a critical question: “What do principals need to know and do to make their school as successful as it possibly could be?”
