Man, it’s hot. Of course, it’s hot. It’s summer in Louisiana. And that means time for ice, cold beer. Acadiana is carving a name for itself in the craft brewing business. There are already three established breweries that locals and visitors have come to know and love as well as one set to open in the near future in Downtown Lafayette. Using the local culture to market their brews, Bayou Teche Brewing, Parish Brewing, Cajun Brewing, and the soon to open Sawbriar Brewery continue to expand production and distribution. See the following for a list of breweries you can stop by and visit or pick up a sample or two in your local grocer.

Parish BREWING Located in Broussard at 229 Jared Dr., Parish Brewing has been making a name for itself since 2008. Brewmaster Andrew Godley and his team have been cranking out hits like Canebrake and Envie that can be found yearround in bars and restaurants all the way down to the state’s coast. Claiming that it has waged war “against boring, tasteless beer”, its special brews like Ghost in the Machine and Opus Vert disappear off store shelves pretty quick. Just a short drive from the middle of Lafayette, the brewery’s taproom is worth an afternoon visit. Learn more about their taproom and beer offerings by visiting

ParishBeer.com.

Cajun BREWING The first microbrewery in Lafayette’s city limits, Cajun Brewing, at 206 Rayburn St., was founded by petroleum engineer, homebrew enthusiast, and Lafayette native Zeke Bossley. Cajun Brewing opened about two years ago with three main brews, Cajun Wit, Bayou Brunette and its newly branded Freetown. Located a short walking distance from the Cajundome and along the city’s major parade routes for Mardi Gras, Cajun Brewing will likely become a popular hangout for locals and visitors, especially during Carnival season. Check out what’s new at Cajun Brewing by visiting CajunBrewing.com.

Bayou Teche

BREWING

About a 20 to 30-minute drive from Lafayette will take you to Bayou Teche Brewing in St. Martin Parish. The family-owned brewery is located just down a gravel road from its namesake, the Bayou Teche, the 125-mile waterway that snakes through Acadiana all the way down to the Atchafalaya Bay. The Knott family and their team play host as well as they brew beer. Visitors come by vehicle, bike, boat and even horse to hang out sometimes for a whole day during the weekends. Along with crafting signature brews like Biere Pale Ale, Ragin’ Cajun Ale and Lager, and Swamp Thing IPA, the brewery is always trying something new. That includes hosting events. There’s live music and food every weekend as well as annual shindigs like the Burning Crawfish Festival held in May. Learn more about the brewery and their various events by visiting

BayouTecheBrewing.com.

Sawbriar BREWERY The soon to be new kid on the brewery block, Sawbriar Brewery, is set to open in the fall of 2018 at 124 S Buchanan St. The brainchild of married couple John and Jessica Paul, an Army vet and English teacher respectively, the brewery will cater to beer aficionados as well as those not so in the beer loop. Many of Sawbriar’s non-distributed brews will be seasonal and experimental with some remaining throughout the year. They will also have many Louisiana brews on tap once the taproom is constructed, which will also include a small music venue for live performances and other events. As for the name? Sawbriar Brewery’s namesake comes from the sawbriar plant that is native in the swampy woods of south Louisiana. It’s a tough plant with long thorns that grow in the harshest conditions but used historically as a medicinal plant and is a crucial source of food for wildlife. The owners chose the name because they hope to plant a seed in constructing the brewery that will bloom and connect with the Lafayette community. Keep up with the breweries progress by visiting

Drive-Thru

Daiquiris Louisiana has some pretty unique laws pertaining to its food industry. There’s even a specific charge against crawfish theft. It especially has unusual regulations on the sale of adult beverages. Where other states require alcohol to be sold in separate brick and mortar locations outside of a grocery store, several parishes here permit the selling of alcohol in gas stations, drug stores and, yes, drive-thru businesses. Like many visitors and transplants, your inaugural daiquiri drive-thru run will come as quite a shock. Yes, here you can drive up to a window and order a frosty, alcoholic beverage. According to NOLA.com, Lafayette was the first to start the ever-growing drive-thru frozen daiquiri business in the 1980’s. After negotiating with local lawmakers, the industry continued to grow and thrive in other tourism hotspots like New Orleans. How is it legal? Well, it’s simple. Keep cup lid on and taped, wait until you get home to insert the straw, and drink it. Daiquiris now come in just about every flavor you can think of from seasonal offerings like eggnog to peach Bellini and predictably tropical flavors like rum runner and piña colada. As the weather heats up, there’s no need to “get down” (as we say here in South Louisiana) from your car to grab a cold treat. Just drive on up and place your order.

snowballs Perfect Summer Treat

Try Googling “snow cones” and see what comes up. It pretty much lands you in Baltimore. The Maryland city claims to be one of the originators of the dessert dating back to the Industrial Revolution when ice was shipped by the truckloads to southern states. To those in Louisiana who read the intro and raised an eyebrow, allow us to explain. Louisiana claims home to the “sno-ball”, which is very similar, yet much different from its icy cousin. Like the po’boy sandwich and other renowned cuisine staples from the Crescent City, the sno-ball has humble origins. In the early 1930s, New Orleans resident Ernest Hansen created an ice-shaving mechanism to help create the treat, which at that time was solely for his family. Unlike similar previous versions of the dessert, which were more coarse ice concoctions, the Hansen icy creation was lighter and fluffy. There began the renowned Hansen’s Sno-Bliz, which is still in operation for 78 years on Tchoupitoulas Street. Not a bad run for a business that has served desserts to the American public since the Great Depression. Here in the Lafayette area, the “sno-ball”, “snowball”, or even “cold cup”, can be found everywhere from spring through fall with just about every mouth-staining flavor available from cherry to cheesecake. You can also order traditional flavors or “stuffed” with decadent ice cream fillings.
