In Full Bloom: Lafayette's Azalea Trail

Spring comes early in South Louisiana, with millions of azalea blossoms in spectacular shades of pinks, purples, corals, and white. The sight is so incredible that the Azalea Society of America has designated Lafayette an Official Azalea City, one of only 16 nationwide. Tourists have flocked to Lafayette since the 1930s to admire the city's azaleas. The flowering bushes were brought to the Gulf Coast over two centuries ago from East Asia and have since flourished. While there are more than 10,000 named selections of azaleas and rhododendrons, Lafayette's predominant variety is the Formosa azalea. In fact, the flower has become synonymous with the city—in the 1950s, the fuchsia lavender Formosa was named "The General Lafayette." Last year marked the 80th anniversary for Lafayette's Azalea Trail, which has gone through a significant revitalization in recent years with the planting of 1,000 azaleas, including 375 around the University of Louisiana. Today, the trail has year-round beauty, with Japanese magnolias and camellias in winter and early spring, as well as Southern magnolias and crepe myrtles in summer. Visitors can follow the Azalea Trail on a self-driving tour from late February through March. The Lafayette Azalea Trail begins at Lafayette Travel's Visitors Center and meanders 20 miles through the city, past Southern homes and historical landmarks. One of the most architecturally stunning churches in the South, the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, is a must-see. Just west of there, dainty blooms complement historic Southern-style cottages along Myrtle Place and St. Mary Boulevard. At the University of Louisiana and neighboring Girard Park, azaleas rest beneath majestic live oaks and accentuate Acadian homes. Lafayette has been named the Happiest City in the U.S. by the Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch. The people here have a pure joy of life. Visiting the heart of Acadiana, you'll feel the joie de vivre in the friendliness of the people, the warmth of the hospitality, the fantastic comfort foods, and the electric energy of the music. 6

1

People

6

In the mid-1700s, the area was settled by refugees expelled from their homes in Acadie, Canada. Against all the odds and 2,000 miles from their home, they were determined to start a new and better life—and their spirit remains today. 2

Great Climate

South Louisiana summers are filled with sunshine, and winters are mild and comfortable, rarely dipping below 50 degrees. 3

Lafayette's rich history, culture, and scenery provide endless inspiration for the arts. Lafayette is home to a symphony orchestra, multiple art galleries, performing arts venues, and notable natives, including world-renown "Blue Dog" artist George Rodrigue and architect A. Hays Town. 7

Affordability

French Culture

Because of its French and Acadian ancestry, Lafayette feels like a little pocket of France that's not too far from home. French immersion is offered at local public schools, and it's not uncommon to hear locals speaking a little Cajun French with expressions. 5

Green Spaces

Parks are critical to a good quality of life, and Acadiana offers plenty of green spaces for its residents and visitors to enjoy. A favorite is Girard Park, located near the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and Moncus Park, scheduled to open in the coming year.

Lafayette's hotels, attractions, and restaurants offer more reasonable prices than neighboring cities, so visitors and locals get a lot more bang for their buck. Visit LafayetteTravel. com/InAPinch for affordable things to do in Lafayette. 4

Arts

8

Don't miss the incredible king cakes available during Mardi Gras at local bakeries, with flavors like cinnamon, cream cheese, amaretto, and chocolate. Visit LafayetteTravel.com/ KingCake for a list of local places that ship out of state.

Music

Acadiana is home to Cajun, Zydeco, and Swamp Pop music played with instruments like washboards, accordions, triangles, and fiddles. Local musicians have won an impressive 16 GRAMMY awards. Listen to the sounds of Lafayette by visiting LafayetteTravel.com/Music.

9

Atchafalaya Basin

Acadiana is home to the most significant wetland swamp in the country. Locals and visitors can enjoy 1.4 million acres of incredible scenery, whether on a swamp tour, a fishing boat, or a kayak.

7

10

Flora and Fauna

Acadiana is beautiful year-round— azaleas bloom in spring, crepe myrtles in summer, and camellias in winter. Look up and see white egrets and pink spoonbills flying right overhead. Area wetlands are home to 60 species of reptiles and amphibians, over 270 species of birds, and nearly 100 species of fish. Visit LafayetteTravel.com/ Outdoor to plan your outdoor adventure in Lafayette. 11

Outdoor Sports

Lafayette's numerous rivers, waterways, and lakes are an incredible playground for any outdoorsman, whether duck hunting, fishing, or birdwatching. 12

Family-Friendly

Acadiana is exceptionally familyfriendly. You'll find many fun-filled activities from geo-caching and puttputt to various playgrounds and splash pads. Plus, there’s a museum just for kids located in Downtown. For familyfriendly trip ideas visit LafayetteTravel. com/FamilyFriendly. 13

Small Town Charm

Lafayette exudes small-town charm with its quaint and walkable downtown, designed in the 1800s. Nearby towns like Breaux Bridge and New Iberia also offer main streets with local shops and restaurants worth exploring. Visit LafayetteTravel.com/HubCity for small town trip ideas in and around Lafayette. 14

Crawfish

A whopping 150 million pounds of crawfish are produced in Louisiana each year! You can also enjoy it yearround at local restaurants in dishes like crawfish etouffee and crawfish pie. Visit LafayetteTravel.com/Crawfish for a list of who’s serving them up this season.

8

15

Po-Boys

Invented by two brothers from Acadiana, po'boys are Louisiana's official sandwich. Varieties include catfish, crawfish, and hot chicken to shrimp, oysters, and meatballs stuffed into freshly baked French bread. 16

Snoballs

South Louisiana doesn't get snow, but everyone loves a sweet icy snoball, especially on a hot day! Try dozens of delicious flavors made with pure cane sugar. (Fun fact: 13 million tons of cane sugar is produced annually in Louisiana.) 17

Drive-Thru Daiquiris

The grown-ups can enjoy their snoballs with a touch of booze at one of the many drive-thru daiquiri shacks. Grab a drink to go and enjoy it once you've reached your destination. As always drink responsibly. 18

Boudin

This local specialty sausage is a must-try, made with pork, spices, and Louisiana-grown rice. Deep-fried with cheese, boudin balls are extra delicious. Another Cajun treat is cracklin, which is fried pork belly with pork skin. Visit LafayetteTravel.com/Boudin for more on the Cajun Country Boudin Trail. 19

Gumbo

A classic comfort food, Cajuns make theirs with chicken, sausage, a dark roux, and a trinity of onions, bell pepper, and celery. But you can find many variations of this classic at LafayetteTravel.com/Gumbo. 20

Resiliency

In recent years, locals have faced hurricanes, a devastating flood, an oil and gas recession, and COVID-19. But Acadians keep their heads held high and a smile on their face no matter what.

Lafayette Parish is home to 37 sites on the NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES Acadiana has a long and profound history. The area was founded in 1755 by French-Canadian exiles seeking religious and cultural freedom. At the time, South Louisiana was Spanish Territory. The Spanish Trail ran right through present-day Lafayette, bringing together Native Americans with European settlers for trade. As a result, the area became a real melting pot. Many significant landmarks around Lafayette remain today. Their unique styles are a testament to the area’s cultural diversity. More than three dozen buildings in Lafayette Parish are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Lafayette Museum, Historic Home and Gardens 1122 Lafayette St., Lafayette

This Greek-Revival home was built in 1820 by Jean Mouton, who later founded the city of Lafayette in 1821. His son Alexandre married in 1926 and added on to the home where he lived until 1936. Alexandre became a US Senator in 1937 and the Governor of Louisiana in 1843. Today, the house serves as the Lafayette Museum.

Charles Mouton Plantation 338 N. Sterling St., Lafayette

Another son of Jean Mouton, Charles Mouton, lived on a property adjacent to his father’s plantation, just a mile outside of town. The Acadian-style raised cottage was built in 1820. Today, the home serves as a bed and breakfast furnished with period pieces. It’s also part of the Sterling Grove Historic District. 15

The Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist 914 Saint John St., Lafayette

Saint John’s Cathedral was the third church built on this downtown site, donated by Jean Mouton in 1821. The present DutchRomanesque landmark was completed in 1916 and is truly awe-inspiring. The cathedral boasts 50-foot ceilings and an altar hand-carved by Italian artisans. Other sites of interest are a historic raised cemetery and a centuries-old oak tree. Public tours are available.

Café Vermilionville

1304 Pinhook Rd., Lafayette

This fine-dining restaurant is located inside the city’s first inn. Nobody is quite sure who built the inn, but records indicate it dates back to 1825. During the Civil War, federal soldiers occupied the inn. Bullets and a cannonball were discovered on the property. While it’s been renovated, the two-story building with its double porches still retains its Anglo-American and French influences, including cypress wood and bousillage—a mixture of clay and cured Spanish moss—in the walls. 16

First United Methodist Church 703 Lee Ave., Lafayette

Built in 1924, this downtown church features a five-bay front facade, prominent portico, and four columns. The style is a classic Colonial-Revival. The church remains active today.

Comeaux House 101 E. Main St., Broussard

This Queen Anne home now houses the upscale Nash’s Restaurant where they serve fine Italian food with Creole influences. The Comeaux House was built in 1910 by the daughter of the Billeaud family, the founders of the town’s prominent sugar mill. The home is in the Main Street Historic District, featuring a beautiful collection of several Queen Anne style buildings.

17

Ducrest Building 100 W. Main St., Broussard

Once the pharmacy and the post office, the 100-yearold building now houses an upscale boutique and interior design shop, The House of Broussard.

Valsin Broussard House 408 W. Main St., Broussard

The oldest remaining residence in Broussard was fittingly built by its town’s founder Valsin Broussard. The Creole-style two-story home was built in 1876. It is privately owned today.

For travelers looking to immerse themselves in an authentic cultural experience, put Lafayette on your bucket list. Louisiana’s Cajun & Creole Country is one of the most unique places you’ll find in the United States. Among fields of rice and sugarcane, bayous, and cypress swamps, you’ll discover authentic music, incredible cuisine, and joie de vivre—a genuine joy of life you won’t find anywhere else. 50

Cajun-French Culture

CNN has noted Lafayette as one of the best places to experience French culture in the United States. The Acadians' history in the area dates back to the 18th century, when they were expelled from Canada and settled in Louisiana. They found refuge in South Louisiana, and today, their French roots remain strong.

Cajun & Zydeco Music

Hear an accordion along with a rubboard, triangle, or fiddle, and you know you’re in Cajun & Creole Country. Because of its unique sound and proud heritage, Acadiana is fertile ground for artists like Lost Bayou Ramblers, Pine Leaf Boys, Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie, The Magnolia Sisters, and Chubby Carrier and The Bayou Swamp Band, who have all been recognized at the GRAMMYs.

America’s Largest Swamp The Atchafalaya Basin is even larger than the Florida Everglades. Shows like Swamp People and Naked and Afraid have aired episodes from this mystical cypress swamp home to 250 species of birds, 22 million pounds of crawfish, and massive alligators. If you’re ready to brave the wild, local airboat and kayaking outfitters provide tours along with plenty of storytelling.

51

Cajun Food

Cajuns are famous for their excellent down-home cookin'. Most Cajun cuisine begins with a mix of green bell pepper, onion, and celery, known as the holy trinity. You must try a few Cajun food specialties, including crawfish étouffée, jambalaya, rice dressing, and chicken and sausage gumbo. One great way to taste a little of everything is on Cajun Food Tours.

Boudin & Cracklin'

These Cajun food specialties are so good, they deserve their own category. Early settlers in Acadiana did not live high on the hog— they lived off the entire hog! Their resourcefulness led to these two great inventions. A pork sausage stuffed with rice, green onions, and seasonings, boudin is served smoked or grilled. Even better, cracklin' are fried morsels of pork fat with the pork skins.

Evangeline Maid Bread The most famous Acadian refugee to the area is Evangeline, immortalized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem. Drive around town, and you’ll see her name on everything, including a giant billboard with a spinning loaf of bread. Now 100 years old, Evangeline Maid bread is still produced in Acadiana, where some half a million loaves are made each week.

Borden’s Last Ice Cream Shoppe Dating back to the 1800s, Borden’s became one of the most recognized dairy brands with its iconic Elsie the Cow mascot. Visitors to Lafayette can savor a blast from the past in the very last Borden’s in the world. The Lafayette outpost has been a mainstay since 1940 and still serves old-fashioned ice cream malts, shakes, sodas, and scoops, as well as ice-cold milk right out of the machine.

Lafaye

Acadiana has been a melting pot of cultures since its early beginnings. French-Canadians immigrated here in the mid-1700s, and the Old Spanish Trail ran right through Louisiana, bringing together settlers and traders of all nationalities. Acadiana's multicultural heritage has made Lafayette one of the top foodie destinations in the country today. Whatever you're craving, you're sure to find it here. Come sample and savor food inspired from around the world—without traveling too far from home.

Masala

2208 Kaliste Saloom Rd., Lafayette MasalaIndianKitchen.com

A retired anesthesiologist opened an Indian restaurant to reflect his North Indian roots in 2006. Start with the fresh naan or samosas (a fried appetizer of potatoes and spices). Then, dive into dishes like Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Rogan Josh. There are plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options, too.

Patacon

308 Bertrand Dr., Lafayette Facebook.com/PataconLLC

This cute little Venezuelan café might be small, but its following is big. Don't miss specialties like the empanadas (meat pie), flan (baked custard), and hallacas (tamales). And of course, you'll want the restaurant's namesake, the patacón, a fried plantain sandwich stuffed with meat and cheese.

Renaissance Market 902 Harding St., Lafayette Renaissance-Market.com

Tucked into a fabulous antique and clothing store in Lafayette's Oil Center is a charming lunch spot with Lebanese flair. The Lebanese sampler includes three grape leaves, tabbouleh, kibbeh (seasoned ground meat), and hummus. The Hashwit Salad is another good choice.

Poupart'

1902 W. Pinhook Rd., Lafayette PoupartsBakery.com

A tradition since 1967, Poupart's is Acadiana's only authentic French bakery. Stop in for beignets and French roast coffee for breakfast or a lunch of quiche, soups, and sandwiches. During Mardi Gras, French-style king cakes are ever-sogood with the perfect hint of almond. 55

Café Habana City 911 Bertrand Dr., Lafayette CafeHabanaCity.com

Lafayette's first Cuban restaurant and mojito bar was opened 18 years ago by a Cuban family. Cuban mothers and grandmothers cook food like black beans, plantains, rice, beef croquettes, Sopa de mariscos (seafood soup), Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), and roasted pork, so you know it's going to be good.

Marcello's

340 Kaliste Saloom Rd., Ste. C, Lafayette MarcellosCafe.com

For excellent Italian cuisine and a unique wine market, head to Marcello's. Owners were born in Sicily and raised in Louisiana, and they combine both cultures exceptionally well. The menu covers everything from local fish with crab meat to fresh mussels, chicken and veal piccata, and traditional pasta dishes.

Laura's II

1904 W. University Ave., Lafayette FB.com/Lauras-2-NEXTGeneration When it comes to soul food and Creole cuisine, Laura's II is the real deal. The legendary Anthony Bourdain once filmed an episode here while dining on stuffed turkey wings, rice dressing, green beans, and potato salad.

Bangkok Thai 3904 Johnston St., Lafayette FB.com/BangkokThaiLafayette

For outstanding Thai cuisine, this casual eatery consistently gets excellent reviews. Find traditional dishes like Pad Thai and a variety of red, green, and yellow curries. Or, dive into the Pad Ka Prao with bell peppers, onions, carrots, snow peas, bamboo shoots, chilis, and basil sauce. 56

Pamplona

631 Jefferson St., Lafayette PamplonaTapas.com

This European-style café is located in the heart of Downtown Lafayette. Order Spanish tapas to share, like the marinated olives, ceviche, and escargot. If you're still hungry, their paella and filets are hard to top, especially when paired with Spanish wine.
