Avant-propos Pour ce faire, il est tout aussi nécessaire à l'entreprise à laquelle j'appartiens de transformer sa science que d'élever sa conscience. Or, c'est par la création, notre histoire l'a montré, que nous renouvelons nos horizons génération après génération. Si notre Fondation d'entreprise est installée sur un site central et historique, elle a pour mission, dans son corps même, de faire bouger les lignes et de rendre compte des mutations de notre époque. Le centre ne peut tenir, notre première exposi­ tion collective, a précisément mis la nature de notre institution en perspective. Douze artistes du monde entier sont venus y produire autant de projets inédits, repoussant sans cesse le cadre qui leur était offert pour livrer au public l'examen minutieux de différentes cultures contemporaines. Les recherches formelles qu'ils ont conduites dans notre centre se poursuivent à présent à travers les écrits de très nombreux auteurs, que je remercie chaleureusement. Intégralement réalisé sur place au cœur même de l'installation d'Andrés Jaque, ce livre est le relais de ceux qui s'autorisent à penser que de nouveaux possibles émergent chaque jour du minuscule, du marginal ou du masqué, dans l'ombre de ce qui est connu et reconnu ailleurs, et c'est heureux.

Foreword To do this, it is just as necessary for the company to which I belong to transform its science as to elevate its consciousness. As our history has shown, it is through creation that we expand our horizons generation after generation. While our Fondation is located on a central and historie site, it has, at its very heart, the mission to shift the boundaries and to account for changing times. Le centre ne peut tenir, our first group exhibi­ tion, puts the nature of our institution in precise perspective. Twelve artists from around the world came to produce as many original projects, constantly pushing the boundaries to provide the audience with the scrutiny of different contem­ porary cultures. The formal research they have conducted in our centre now continues through the writings of many authors, whom I warmly thank. Entirely produced on site at the heart of Andrés Jaque's installation, this book is a beacon for those who allow themselves to think of new possibili­ ties emerging each day from the tiny, the marginal or the hidden, in the shadow of what is known and recognized elsewhere.

Des Épiphanes et des constellations de Marie Proyart et Jean-Marie Courant, et aux talents d'imprimeurs d'Oscar Ginter et Vincent Longhi, cet ouvrage a été intégralement conçu, mis en page, imprimé et relié sur place, dans l'espace public de la Fondation. Il est encore tôt pour tirer les leçons d'un projet aux ramifications si complexes. Néanmoins, ce qui est à l'œuvre avec Le centre ne peut tenir, qui a tolites les apparences d'une simple exposi­ tion, c'est véritablement l'éclosion d'une constellation dont l'institution initiatrice souhaite être non pas le soleil, mais le satellite principal. Lafayette Anticipations inscrit ses actes dans le mouvement des champs de forces qu'elle génère ou par lesquels elle se trouve emportée, régissant le passage des pensées à la forme et des formes à la pensée.

Of Epiphanes and Constellations graphie and editorial adaptation, as well as the curators, but also thanks to the graphie design of Marie Proyart and Jean-Marie Courant, and to Oscar Ginter and Vincent Longhi's printing expertise, this book has been fully designed, laid out, printed and bound on site in the Fondation's public space. It is still early to draw lessons from a project with such complex ramifications. However, what is at work with Le centre ne peut tenir, which has ail the outward trappings of a simple exhibi­ tion, is truly the emergence of a constellation of which the initiating institution wants to be not the sun, but a major satellite. Lafayette Anticipations inscribes its actions in the force fields which it generates or by which it is carried, governing the passage of thoughts to form and forms to thought.
