Phalaborwa’s health is a priority As the news broke in 2017 of the closure of the only private hospital, or at the very least the only equipped and functional medical facility in the town of Phalaborwa, panic struck the close-knit community. The closure of the Clinix Hospital facilities meant that emergency medical care was an hour away in any direction. This in turn meant that life-threatening circumstances such as cardiac arrest could result in a patient’s death before reaching medical care.

Dr Thabo Motsoane was actively involved in the running of the 24 hour Emergency Room at Mediclinic Tzaneen at the time. He formed part of the group of doctors on call along with Dr Gary Middleton who would work with emergency trauma cases.

Because of his love for the profession and his drive to help his community, he saw the opportunity to offer an invaluable service to the Phalaborwa community and so made the move to Phalaborwa where he helped bring about the MarulaMed Health Centre in Park Street.

Though not a full-sized hospital, MarulaMed Health Centre does offer a host of important medical services which include a newly constructed and fully functional ICU and Triage Room.

Other services offered at this facility is Sonography, Family Planning, Primary Health Care, Minor Surgical Procedures, Antenatal Care, ECG, Emergency Care, General Health Screening, Allied Services and more. Just recently, Marulamed has seen the addition of Marula X-Rays and Marula Lab. “It is very important for the community of Ba-Phalaborwa to understand that MarulaMed is not ony for the upper crust of society, but we cater and care for everyone in need, no matter their class, colour or creed,” said Doctor Thabo Motsoane.

Healthy hearing since 1996 Tzaneen Hearing and Speech Centre were established in 1996. In its 23 years history this centre have grown from strength to strength to become the preferred choice in hearing and speech therapy.

Behind the success of Tzaneen Hearing and Speech Centre is audiologist and speech therapist, Hettie van Nikkelen Kuyper, who is also the owner of the centre.

“The centre offers diagnostic hearing evaluations, supply of hearing aids and treatment of any communication problems

experienced by children and adults”, said van Nikkelen Kuyper.

“I believe that every person who visits the centre is unique in their own way and should be treated as such. For example, when I supply a hearing aid to a patient, I will take every step of the way with them to ensure that it fulfils the specific need it requires for each individual”, said van Nikkelen Kuyper.

Van Nikkelen Kuiper said that she always wanted to make a difference in the lives of people which is mainly the reason she became an audiologist and speech therapist as well as the establishment of Tzaneen Hearing and Speech Centre.

“My parents moved to Tzaneen when I was in Gr.12 and thus completed my high school career at Hoërskool Ben Vorster. After school after completing my studies, I went to Holland for a year. Upon my arrival I worked for a while a mayoral secretary. Eventually a scraped all of my confidence together to establish my own practice, and here we are today 23 years later”, said van Nikkelen Kuyper.
