Mankabidi with water gets R1m Crisis is upon Tzaneen golden handshake About a year ago (!) water started leaking from an underground pipeline feeding Tzaneen, about 500 meters past the cycad nursery on the south western entrance to Tzaneen (almost across the road from the prison). We again reported it to the GTM about two months ago and we were told that an inspection was held. However, nothing has been done to fix the problem.
The red lights are on for Tzaneen’s water consumers. The lack of maintenance of the infrastructure over the past twenty years is starting to take its toll, and this week’s cut in the water supply to parts of Tzaneen for up to 24 hours could be the beginning of a time of agony for residents. The problem worsened dramatically when Tzaneen experienced strong growth in the years from about 2000 till 2012. The frantic developments in the residential market during those years added additional strain on the infrastructure. What now happens, amongst
other things, is that the old pipes can’t handle the water pressure, resulting in the reservoirs being filled only about 50%. When a pipe burst is experienced the reservoirs run dry very quickly, and it takes quite some time to get them back to a reasonable level. The Bulletin has been writing about the unavoidable problems with water supply over the past couple of years, warning Tzaneen residents that a crisis was waiting in the wings. We warn residents today that a serious problem with the sewerage system is looming, and it is just a matter of time....

Vlieg het gedink hy gaan dié week baie tyd kry om stories uit te dink terwyl hy in sy hospitaalbed lê, maar toe kom hy agter dis nie so maklik om te tik in die maagliggende posisie nie. Ook nie met die mate van pyn en ongemak wat hy ervaar nie. Hy het egter tyd gehad om ‘n bietjie te google via ons hospitaal se nuwe wi-fi. Vind hy toe uit dat Indië die meeste het, 21, en Meksiko die minste, net 7. Kambodja kom naby Indië met 20, dan Colombië met 18. ‘n Hele paar het 16, Hong Kong, Egipte, Thailand en SuidKorea; terwyl Finland, Argentinië, Chile en

Sien, Vlieg se aambeie vervel van die sonbrand van al die slaap totdat die son in sy alie skyn op al die vakansiedae! Vlieg google nou Meksikaans vir beginners! *Eina! in Spaans.

The land of milk & honey (Part 4) The sweet flow of milk and honey — feeding the bank accounts of a handful — in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality continues. Last week the council announced that they will pay a year’s salary to the suspended municipal manager, Mr Masiye Elias Mankabidi, to settle with him to retire from the senior position he held. Fact of the matter is that the council was ordered by the CCMA to make the payment. However, the CCMA’s decision does not absolve the GTM’s (ANC) councillors from their clumsy handling of the situation.

The candidates are the GTM’s directors, excluding Lion and thus leaving council to decide between Messrs Obey Mkhombo (director of community services), Pierre van den Heever (director of electrical engineering services), Ms Dikeledi Malatji (director of civil engineering) and Mr Elias Mugari (director of corporate services). • Mankabidi’s salary was R1 355 000 per annum (R113 000 per month) and last year he also earned a bonus of R112 928.

School boys arrested Four school boys between the ages of sixteen and twenty were arrested in Bolobedu last week for possessing suspected stolen property. The stolen items included computers, printers, monitors, laminating machines, speakers and a computer case — which allegedly belonged to a secondary school in the area. The estimated value of the goods is R100 000. The boys will appear in the Bolobedu Magistrates’ Court soon.

It will include education on crimes such as murder, attempted murder, missing children, rape and kidnapping, to mention just a few. “The SAPS has identified incidents that show a common tendency of parents, especially single-mothers, leaving their children unattended during the day and sometimes at night — or ignoring the fact that their children’s bedrooms do not lock, leaving them vulnerable to being raped,” said Ngoepe. The identified target groups for these exercises are individual women and women’s organisations, including women church leagues. Towards each visit to the different police stations, there will be buildup activities like visiting the Tribal Kgoros, schools, and churches. All the events/visits will be presented and hosted by SAPS members, who will be accompanied by the SAPS provincial commissioner, the cluster commander, social workers, church pastors and CPFs. The program will be run in the following policing areas under the cluster: Tzaneen on Wednesday 13 May from 09:00; Bolobedu on Wednesday 20 May from 09:00; Letsitele on Friday 29 May from 09:00; Maake on Friday 06 June from 09:00; Modjadjiskloof on Wednesday 11 June from 09:00; Ritavi on Wednesday 18 June from 09:00. “The Bible says God wants a reciprocal love relationship with each of us, individually. Reciprocal love requires that the object of love have freedom to choose whether or not to return love. Betekenis word geheg aan ‘n gebeurtenis deur die manier wat ons daaroor dink en praat. Dis nie wat gebeur nie, maar hoe ons daaroor dink wat saakmaak. Emosies en gedrag spruit uit die betekenis wat ons aan gebeure heg. Woorde of frases in selfgesprek kan emosies en ingesteldheid verander. Kinders kan leer om hulself te bemagtig met positiewe selfgesprekfrases. Opdragte of vrae wat kinders vir hulself gee of vra, kan hulle help probleme oplos en op take help konsentreer. Hierdie selfgesprek kan kinders help om impulsiwiteit en gedrag te leer beheer en hul siening van ‘n probleem verander. Kinders moet bewus word hoe hul selfgesprek hul gedrag en buie beheer. Kinders moet leer om hulself op die skouer te klop — maar net wanneer hulle hard daarvoor gewerk het. Die kind moet harde werk met ‘n goeie gevoel kan assosieer. Hierdie goeie gevoel in ‘n stresvolle situasie bied die kind die geleentheid om aan te hou konsentreer op ‘n taak en skakel moedeloosheid uit. Selfgesprek bepaal uithouvermoë. Dit is baie belangrik om ‘n kind te leer om aan te hou wanneer iets moeilik is. Uithouvermoë word deur herhaling aangeleer en ingeoefen. Thighs and the irony of oppression Thighs is a favourite poem of mine performed by Desireé Dallagiacomo (a random phenomenal feminist whose work I came across online). She performed it at the Women of the World Poetry Slam last year. As the title states, in the poem, Dallagiacomo talks about her thighs, which she describes as “thunderous”, “too fat for skinny jeans”, “wide” and “open”, amongst other things. Although the camera never reveals her thighs during the performance, and Dallagiacomo does not quite look like someone with “thunderous” thighs herself, she does look bigger in some of her previous years’ poetry performances. Hence in this case, the poem can be seen on the one hand as a response to fat shaming. In the poem, she explains that her thighs have been shamed. “Fear, still are most days,” she says to perhaps note that she still fears the shaming she received. Towards the end of the poem, she arguably reclaims the discussion of her body and its image. “Don’t tell a [thing] about what we [Dallagiacomo and her thighs] say, about this body,” she says. On the other hand, the poem can be seen as a response to

Die saak waaroor dit gaan is eintlik die vraag of die persone konsekwent is in die register waarin hulle kommunikeer. Natuurlik ook of die persoon doeltreffend kommunikeer deur die gebruik van daardie register. Die begrip register by taal verwys na formeel, informeel, akademies, vaktaal, straattaal, ensovoorts. As predikant is ek baie bewus van hoedanig taal effektief (in positiewe sin bv. oor verlossing en negatiewe sin bv. met verwysing na sonde) aangewend kan word. Ek is egter ook baie bewus daarvan dat daar “kanseltaal” van ’n leraar verwag word wanneer hy op die kansel staan – sekere woorde is taboe. Tog mag dieselfde leraar oor dieselfde onderwerp in heeltemal ’n ander register praat met byvoorbeeld tieners/kinders. Die gebruik van spesifieke woorde is dan nie noodwendig swak Afrikaans nie, dis bloot in ’n spesifieke register wat nie aanklank • Vervolg op bladsy 11

Dan val die smouse jou op. Ek kan nie onthou wanneer laas ons in die Tzaneng Mall was nie. Eens op ‘n tyd ons trots. Nou is mens net nie lus om daar naby te kom nie. Die mooi tuin voor die Crossing Mall is ‘n lafenis vir die oog. Ry die toeris verby die munisipale gebou, begroet nog ‘n droewige prentjie jou. Die lelike tuine wat eens op ‘n tyd ‘n lushof was. Die kunswerke teen die mure begin plek-plek afdop. Ek slaan die Vrouekeur van 8 Mei oop en besluit ek gaan nooit weer rondom my kyk nie. Rian van Heerden skryf in sy laaste rubriek vir die tydskrif: ”Nerens in die wereld sal jy die tipe skoonheid ervaar wat jy in Suid Afrika in een land kan ervaar nie. As jy nog nie in plekke soos Saldanha, Tzaneen, Haenertsburg, Sabie en Baberton was nie, sal jy nie weet waarvan ek praat nie”. Ek wonder by myself : Vir hoe lank Rian?

At the beginning, Dallagiacomo extensively describes traits of her thighs that make them undesirable. “My thighs say ‘cellulite’, say ‘bad tattoo’, say ‘stretch marks’, say ‘pockmarks’, say ‘ingrown hair’,” she says at one point. One can directly relate this to the expected personality of a woman with ‘cellulite’, ‘stretch marks’, a ‘bad tattoo’ (or any tattoo) and so on. She is arguably wild, a party animal, into drugs, unladylike and so on. “My thighs are always the elephant in the dressing” and “My thighs make a mockery of shorts”, Dallagiacomo continues, to arguably point at perspectives through which her thighs appear ugly. Think of the perspectives as a microscope through which all women are looked at and groomed
(tamed) to fit into the image thereof. The further one is from the image, the more ugly and wild (untameable) one appears. In the second half of the poem, Dallagiacomo then asks, “Is this too much praise, gospel of this body, we don’t know small?” In other words, the irony of the ‘standard’ microscopic lens is that what it portrays as ugly appears beautiful and strong through a different lens. Moreover, earlier in the poem, Dallagiacomo refers to what seems like sexual abuse her thighs attracted. “My thighs say, ‘We are every man’s wet dream even when we beg not to be’,” she says. The irony in this case is that ugly and undesirable as they have been deemed, her thighs have been subject to other people’s pleasure. Hence, at this point one may ask, why the shaming? On a broader scale, think of corrective rapes on lesbians; criticism towards feminists, independent and assertive women, women who go against expectations -- why the hatred? Another first for MediClinic Tzaneen MediClinic Tzaneen offers yet another first: a Clinical Pharmacist. Ms Thelma Fourie has joined the hospital as its first ever Clinical Pharmacist. There are not many Clinical Pharmacists in South Africa. Only Medunsa offers this masters’ degree course and only to fifteen students per year. Fourie studied pharmacy at Potchefstroom University (now North West) and worked at Unitas Hospital in Centurion, the biggest private hospital in the southern hemisphere. It was during her year in Sutton, Redding and Hampstead Heath in the UK, working in pharmacies under the National Health Services, that she developed a passion for clinical pharmacy specialising in adult ICU patients.

Whilst in the UK, Fourie also conducted research studies for the pharmaceutical company Pfizer on colon cancer. Three years ago the USA and the WHO (World Health Organisation) stated that medicine had to go back to the pre-antibiotic era. Thus the buzzword “antibiotic stewardship” was born. It’s a holistic approach to patients with a multidisciplinary team including physicians, dieticians, micro-biologists from Ampath and Lancet in Pretoria and the infection control risk manager. Organisms have developed resistance to antibiotics and it would seem that there’s a correlation between antibiotics and resistance. Resistance comes from India because of readily available drugs there, and organisms occur

Hartseer oor SAVF in Tzaneen sluit • Regering ongenaakbaar en skort subsidie op Hartseer, skok en kommer is van die emosies wat mense die afgelope week oorweldig het, nadat aangekondig is die SA Vrouefederasie se kantoor in Tzaneen sluit die einde van die maand, na 78 jaar se toegewyde diens aan die gemeenskap. Die besluit is verlede week Donderdag op ‘n somber noot aangekondig, nadat die departement van gemeenskapsdienste besluit het om nie die organisasie se maandelikse subsidie van R31 000 te hernu nie. Vyf personeellede is noodgedwonge afgedank en daaglikse hulp aan minstens 1 600 behoeftige mense in die dorp kom tot ‘n einde. Die rede vir die opskorting van die subsidie is dat die SAVF se aansoek om bystand ‘n halfuur laat ingedien is, weens “tegniese redes” waarvan hulle bewyse het. Voortdurende
skakeling met die regering oor die kwessie het egter niks opgelewer nie en dringende navrae het op dowe ore geval. Die SAVF se provinsiale bestuurder, me Erna Eloff, het dié nuus verlede week aan die takbestuur oorgedra. ‘n Totaal van 190 lêers oor maatskaplike gevalle in Tzaneen sal aan die einde van die maand aan die dagkliniek van die staat (in Claude Wheatley-straat naby die busterminus en die taxi-staanplek) oorhandig word. Mense wat maatskaplike hulp nodig het, sal daar in rye moet gaan wag om gehelp te word. Festival draws a big crowd
The Food, Wine and Beer Festival in Haenertsburg was a great success over the long weekend. The jovial, colourful and bohemian atmosphere was peppered with live music from a saxophone to a violin. The photos show some activities that were performed in the three categories (food, wine and beer). Archery club shines at championships • Merensky’s now best in SA Once again 21 Merensky archers proved their passion for the sport as they competed in the National Indoor Archery Championships.
On day one, three of the archers shot national qualifying scores (Canell Jackson, Janco Theron and Schalk Warmenhoven). Three archers — Renart Botha, Carissa Ivy and Owen Otto — shot provincial qualifying scores. On day two the following archers shot national qualifying scores: Canell Jackson and Owen Otto. Four archers shot provincial qualifying scores for the 2015-2016 indoor archery year: Schalk Warmenhoven, Ricus Warmenhoven, Lin-Marie Theron and Carissa Ivy. The Merensky archers proved to be a talented group of hard working, persistent individuals. At the prize giving they received the following accolades: Best High School Young Adults Team – Buffalo Trophy: Ricus Warmenhoven, Benéchè Jackson and Renart Botha; Bronze accolade for Junior High School Team: Carissa Ivy, Lin-Marie Theron and Simoné Smith; Bronze medal winners: Carissa Ivy and Owen Otto; Silver medals were awarded to Canéll Jackson. The four National Indoor champions are: Veteran Men: Ockert Le Roux (gold medal); Young Adults Bow Hunter: Renart Botha (gold medal); Young Adults Female: Benéchè Jackson (gold medal) and Young Adults Freestyle: Ricus Warmenhoven (gold medal). Merensky excels in soccer Merensky High School’s junior and senior soccer teams played league games against Khanyisa Education Centre from Giyani. The home ground games were fast paced. During these games the Plasies showed how team work leads to success. The Plasie junior team won 1-0, with Mokungu Nkolele scoring the winning goal. The first team leaped off the field with a massive 6-0 win. Kagiso Modjadji scored two goals and Elliott Delsouiller, Lemuka Mashele, Nyiko Shikwambana and Tumi Ngwako each scored one goal. Colin Banyini of Merensky’s first team is seen asking for support, with Phillemon Mabidilala in action in the background.

Last week Friday Merensky’s The Plasies reigned supreme and mountain bikers competed at the received gold medals in three Windpompfees in Mookgopong. categories. Robert Retief was named overall winner in the men’s 40 km race, despite the fact that he entered in the junior category. Armand Cronjé took part in the sub-junior category for boys, and was also named the overall winner in the men’s 20 km event. Christelle Coetzer entered the sub-junior girls, and was awarded the overall winner in the ladies’ 20 km event.

Vossies, Helpies trek baie gelyk
Die eerste meisieshokkiespan van die Vossies wat Helpmekaar Kollege die naweek afgestof het met 3-0. Voor is Bernice Claasen, Gretchen Bekker, Beauty Maake en Kagiso Malatje, en agter is Niki Thompson, Jenna Auret, Delmé Barkhuizen, Amu Thuketane, Allison Rudder, Elizma Weyers en Marli Burger.
Die Hoërskool Ben Vorster se meisies het lekker sterk teenstand in hul hokkiewedstryde teen Helpmekaar Kollege van Johannesburg gekry. Die hokkiewedstryde is op die Universiteit van Johannesburg se astro-velde beslis. Die Vossies se eerste span en die o.15A’s het gewen, drie spanne het gelykop gespeel (o.16A, o.15B en tweedes) en die o.14A-span is die enigste span wat verloor het. Die eerste span het van die begin af baie sterk aanvallende hokkie gespeel. Delmé Barkhuizen het die eerste doel aangeteken en Marli Burger het dit opgevolg met twee doele, vir ‘n wentelling van 3-0. Volledige uitslae: o.14A (0-5), o.15A (20), o.16A (1-1), tweede span (0-0), o.15B (0-0) en eerste span (3-1).
Imke en Nadine Jacobs van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster het die afgelope naweek ‘n baie suksesvolle perdespringkliniek bygewoon. Dit is aangebied deur Ronnie Lawrence, wat reeds sewe keer gekroon is as die SA derbykampioen. Dit is by die Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate gehou. Hier is Nadine Jacobs en haar perd in aksie.

Die Laerskool Duiwelskloof se netbalspelers wat vir die skool se eerste en tweede spanne uitdraf, spog met splinternuwe vere — danksy ‘n ruimhartige borgskap van Van Rensburg Boerdery.
Hoe rooier, hoe mooier! Die eefste span se nuwe netbalvere is treffend rooi. Hier vertoon die spellers die nuwe drag; agter staan Lati Makoro, Roché Vermaak (afrigter), Priscilla Makwala, Cindy Greyvenstein, Kowani Janse van Rensburg (hoofafrigter) en Wandri Janse van Rensburg. Voor is Precious Maswanganyi, Myrna Viljoen en Lepudi Magabane.

Waarheen SA Rakbie? GG en KoosKakie so ver as moontlik weg van mekaar laat sit het, weerskante van Oubal en ou Al. Die interessantse van die wedstryd was GG en KK wat afwisselend opinies uitgespreek het oor hoe swak die skeidsregter was. Afwisselend, afhangend van watter span op ‘n gegewe oomblik ‘n beslissing teen hom gekry het. ‘Tja, maar agterna by Yskor het niemand eintlik rede gehad om opgewonde te wees oor enigiets nie. GG het aanvanklik ‘n brawe front voorgehou van hoe goed die BB is met die bal in die hand agterlangs, tot KK hom gevra het hoekom hulle in die tweede helfte weer verval het in onoordeelkundige hoogskop-en-bid taktiek. “Looks at the score-
bord,” was GG se flou geykte antwoord. En dis juis as ‘n mens na die telbord van SA Rakbie kyk, dat Oubal ietwat bekommerd is in hierdie Wêreldbekerjaar. Die BB kan nie skram nie, met of sonder Dean Greyling. Natuurlik is dit die skeidsregters wat niks van skramwerk weet in hulle oë nie, al was dit verskillende blasers op twee agtereenvolgende Saterdae. Die Stommerds kan skram, maar hulle kan ‘n lynstaanbal nie eers koop nie. En dan sit hulle met twee losskakels waarvan een kan skop maar nie ‘n agterlyn kan wegkry nie; die ander kan wel, maar hy kan nie skop nie. Die Haaie? Wel, na Oubal se onbeskeie mening kan hulle nie rakbie speel nie, punt. Met al die talent in hulle span is die huidige stand van sake ‘n aanduiding van ‘n groot skroef wat los is in KwaZuma-Natal, Oubal is net
nie seker of dit by die bestuur, die afrigterskorps of die spelers is nie. Nie eers ou Al weet nie. Sit Oubal en sy maters verlede Saterdag ounag daar in die Yskorklub in Pretoria (lewenslange ere-lede!) en derms uitryg oor die stand van SA rakbie en praat onsself in ‘n major depressie in. ‘Tja, op die ingewing van die oomblik besluit ons mos om deur te ry vir die Slag van Loftus, met ArthurIngelsman as toegewyde drywer. Was nie moeilik om ou Al te oortuig nie, want soos die meeste van sy mede Haai-ondersteuners het hy opgegee oor sy span, met die verskil dat ou Al gesweer het hy sit sy lippe nooit weer aan G&T’s voor die gemors in die Last Outpost nie uitgesorteer is nie. Wat ons soos ‘n handskoen gepas het! Voor die hoofmaal het ons eers in Loftus se biertuin sit en kyk hoe die Cheetahs die onbeholpe Stommerds afransel en dit was nie ‘n mooi gesig nie. Die enigste wat dit geniet het, was ou GertGrensvegter wat skielik visoene gesien het van die BB wat weer bo aan die punteleer is sover dit SA spanne aangaan. Die Slag was nogal prettig vir ‘n neutrale persoon, maar dit moet vermeld word dat ons
