After eight long months and the complete destruction of a football sized section of natural bush, the communities in the Kruger Street neighbourhood of Phalaborwa can finally sleep peacefully. The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality has eventually decided to repair a sewerage leak this week after nearly a year of continuous complaints by homeowners in that area.

The leak had been gushing out raw sewage and causing a stench on the busy residential road for more than eight months, residents said. Hans Steyn, a Phalaborwa resident, had contacted Bulletin and explained that he has had to live with the stench since October 2020 and that there was no proper indication from the mumchance municipality as to when they would fix the problem.

Steyn had also mentioned that he had four different job cards for the sewerage spill that was contaminating the surrounding environment, but nothing happened. The municipality’s excuse was that they could not reach the manhole because of the thick overgrowth – which was never a problem in the past when regular maintenance and bush clearing was at the order of the day.

Bulletin reported the sewerage leaks several times and could not obtain any comment from the municipality’s spokesperson, Jonas Mahesu, who has been notorious in his avoidance of media inquiries. In the meantime, the municipality brought in a contractor who bulldozed the entire section of veld between Pres Kruger and Pres Steyn Streets leaving the area resembling a desert. At the time of going to print the leak was finally repaired and though no official response from the municipality had been received, we were reliably informed that the problem was apparently due to debris and foreign objects clogging the sewer lines. It is believed that the high number of informal student accommodations are to blame for the overloading of the sewerage infrastructure.

This is another problem that Bulletin has repeatedly highlighted. Homes intended for four adult occupants are purchased and converted into makeshift housing for the students attending the local TVET college. These homes are not adequately adapted to handle the large number of people occupying them (in some instances up to 24 students are living in four bedroomed homes). Again, this is something that the municipality’s inspectors have turned a blind eye towards.

There has been a spike in poaching activity in the Phalaborwa area and recently even a cat, duiker, nyala, and porcupine were among the animals caught in snares. To try and combat the poaching, members of the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF) have been combing the wildlife area and removing traps and snares. According to Eugene Troskie, a member of the PNHF, in most recent times they have had to remove snares not only from pets or wildlife, but livestock too.

“We have had a zebra, three African Wild Dogs, a warthog, and an African Civet killed in snares recently,” stated Troskie.

He said that they are currently trying to locate a spotted hyena and another buffalo which have snares on them. During the past weekend, the PNHF directors did a reconnaissance mission in a small area after they received a tipoff from the Phalaborwa Alley Cats and Nooters Club about snares around town.

“We received a tip off that somebody’s dog went missing in Kremetart Street and when they went to go search for it, they found a whole bunch of snares,” said Troskie. “We located 10 snares in a relatively small area, and we even found a cat caught in a snare and a trap for birds as well.”

Troskie also told Bulletin that Illegal dumping in certain areas of town was attracting baboons and other animals who all fall victim to these snares. When questioned on how the snaring could be stopped, he said that problem areas needed to be noted in town, followed by a snare sweep in those areas.

“People need to be more aware of their surroundings, not just snares, because all the snares we found over the weekend were very close to homes. If people were aware of their surroundings, the snarer could have been visible from a lot of houses.”

Troskie stated that the people who set snares were after the wildlife, however, they end up catching domestic animals which they do not even want to eat. Troskie also said that the economic factor to poaching was high because of the vet costs involved in having to dart that animal as most animals in snares often end up in other reserves.

Man torched

■ Jeff Jackson The Police in Giyani have opened a case of murder following the brutal killing of a man by the community of Nkomo Village on Tuesday morning, the 13th of July. The victim, identified as Jabu Shilubane (32), was reportedly accused by the local community of stealing liquor from one of the bottle stores in the area during the previous evening.

The victim was apparently spotted by the community who blocked the road, pulled him out of his vehicle and drove it to the nearby sports ground. They then started assaulting him and later burned him to death. They thereafter allegedly looted the liquor and torched the deceased’s motor vehicle. The owner of the liquor outlet later opened a case of business burglary.

Three dead after head-on ■ Billy Sibuyi Three people died and one was severely injured in a head-on-collision involving two cars on Sunday morning, 11th of July, just outside Phalaborwa town.

The accident that involved a VW Polo and a Ford Sedan on the R71 near Kolobe Lodge reportedly occurred around 02:30 in the morning, five hours after another accident was reported on the same road just before the Majeje Lulekani turnoff. This was more than five hours after the national curfew.

It is alleged that the driver of the VW lost control of the vehicle and collided with the on-coming Ford sedan.

“The drivers of both vehicles, a male and a female, as well as one male passenger were all certified dead at the scene,” said the spokesperson for Limpopo’s department of Transport and Community Safety, Mike Maringa. “One passenger who escaped with serious injuries was rushed to a nearby hospital.”

In the accident the night before, on Saturday 10th of July, on the R40, three people were transported to Maphuta Malatjie hospital by medical response teams after three cars were involved in a collision.

According to Jaco Gericke, a medical responder, seven minor injuries were reported on the scene, but they only transported three people to hospital.

Rumour causes undue panic at Lifestyle Centre ■ Joe Dreyer & Roelof de Jonge Taxi Associations around the area of Tzaneen responded in their numbers on Thursday afternoon the 15th of July after a rumour was spread that looters were planning on attacking the Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre.

This after the various taxi associations from Tzaneen and surrounding areas swore an oath to protect businesses against any threat of violence or looting earlier this week after the outbreak of nationwide violence at major retail stores. The taxi associations have been working closely with the local law enforcement and security agencies and the situation is being very closely monitored.

Bulletin was at the scene and spoke to Alida Smit, General Manager of Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre who confirmed that there was no instance of violence or looting and that because of the rumour, the shop’s management took precautionary measures.

“Thank you to the taxi drivers who reacted to the potential threat and within minutes arrived at the centre to face any potential threat. It is uplifting to witness how an entire community has come together to protect what is ultimately theirs. This has just shown us the community spirit and togetherness. We are glad to say that no looting or rioting has occurred and trust the situation will remain the same in Tzaneen. We thank every responder, taxi association and drivers, municipal employees, SAPS and every member of the community for their effort in keeping our businesses safe.”

Voice notes of panicked individuals who were at the popular shopping centre at the time that the taxi’s arrived, spread like wildfire over all social media platforms which created undue panic. There were reports by shoppers who were inside Checkers at the time, who said that they saw two young men being escourted out of the shop by centre management. One eye witness said that it was believed to have been two shoplifters who took a chance when they saw a gap. These reports have not been confirmed or linked to any planned looting action.

As South Africa descended into unadulterated chaos this week with looting and riots flaring up all across Gauteng and KZN, Limpopo province united and stood prepared for any rumoured up flaring of violence in small towns like Phalaborwa and Tzaneen.

Messages were circulated across various safety and security platforms warning looters to stay away as businesses, private citizens and security personnel took a stand against would be criminals and any intentions to jump on the bandwagon.

On Tuesday afternoon, 13th of July, a group of men arrived at Spar Kruger, however the Phalaborwa CPF were quick to the call and attended the scene, which ended in an argument before the group of men left. Thus, rumours that Spar Kruger was looted, were dismissed by the chairperson of the CPF, Anton Kellerman.

On Wednesday, 14th of July, businesses, and various shopping centers across parts of Mpumalanga were ransacked and word soon spread that these same looters would make their way to Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa and Tzaneen later that afternoon.

“SAPS intelligence has learnt that multitudes of Mpumalanga residents based in Mbombela will be transported to our town in a bid to loot and damage public and private property thus putting the lives of our people at risk and our economy which in the recent past managed to overcome the economic shutdown where communities were protesting for meaningful participation in the mining sector,” said a statement that was released by the Ba-Phalaborwa Mayor, Merriam Malatjie.

“We are therefore calling on our Community Policing Forums to engage our SAPS superiors in our local police stations to source details and be ready to defend and protect our town against any form of criminal elements or activities.”

The state of Tzaneen’s CBD is nothing short of horrid. Many of the buildings lining the main road, are aged and weathered. The pavements are an endless struggle as the municipality relentlessly fight to enforce what little hold they still have over their own bylaws in the removal of illegal street traders. Scattered across the main routes are the skeletal remains of buildings destroyed in fires many years ago. These buildings have become urine-stained eyesores negatively affecting local business and casting a shadow over the rest of the town’s surrounding beauty. Well, one business owner had enough and last month Nina van Heerden and her team at Sleebok Granite and Tombstones gave their shop in Danie Joubert Street (the old Ford Motors showroom) a complete facelift. The modern looking building now stands out from the dilapidated rubble like a proverbial diamond in the rough. The facelift and clean paving in front of it, almost instantly had a ripple effect and soon their neighbours joined in and upgraded their shopfront as well. The inside of the shop still boasts the original tiles of the Ford showroom which have now been given a chemical clean and look as good as when they were first installed four decades ago. Considering all the negativity currently casting a shadow over our beloved country, a cleansing is a truly welcome reprieve. It only takes one to start.

Giving them a CHoiCE ■ Roelof de Jonge Tzaneen’s Chamber of Business joined hands with CHoiCE Trust in a Blanket and Food Drive aimed at warming the many destitute families in the Greater Tzaneen Municipal area this past week. Soon after initializing the drive, members of the Boab Rotary Club’s satellite E-Club came onboard and assisted in the roll out of this fantastic initiative.

These Rotarians managed to collect 70 new blankets which were handed over on the 8th of July. According to Rona McGaffin, a consultant for CHoiCE Trust, the blankets were destined to be distributed amongst 67 vulnerable and marginalised households in communities from the Tzaneen area.

McGaffin said that all the blankets and

food parcels collected for the drive would be handed out to these households as part of the Mandela Day celebration which takes place on Sunday the 18th of July.

The staff of CHoiCE Trust thanked all donors and sponsors who generously contributed to their project.

CHoiCE stands for Comprehensive Health Care and slowly evolved into the name CHoiCe Trust. The South African based NGO was established in 1997 and is based in Tzaneen. With a staff of committed professionals, CHoiCe is able to help make an impact in rural areas in a wide spectrum of ways. Proceeds from projects reach a full range of beneficiaries such as children, the elderly, health workers, farm workers, persons infected and affected by HIV, and rural communities.

Residents bear the brunt of GLM failure ■ Roelof de Jonge

Modjadjiskloof is in a very serious state of disrepair as a direct result of the lax attitude towards service delivery and maintenance by the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM). The unwillingness which accompanies halfhearted workmanship on maintenance issues by the local municipality, is as appalling as their disregard for the calls by their community for service delivery.

One of the town’s long-time residents said it is unacceptable that the municipality is failing in the very basics which include the maintenance of existing infrastructure and the upgrading of aged, or dilapidated structures such as telephone poles, electrical poles and sewerage systems. He said if you don’t have fresh water stored, or a borehole for that matter, you are in trouble as the municipality is just not able to deliver basic services anymore and their pleads as residents are falling on deaf ears. He said that it is the worst he has seen this town in all his 45 years residing there.

Bulletin and even another local newspaper, have in the past reported on these matters, too many times to name in fact, and Mabel Drive sewerage pipe was fixed, but no care taken to make the sidewalk sort of presentable again. every time the media receives the clichéd “we are aware of the situation and we are looking into the matter”.

Bulletin also followed up on an article two weeks ago regarding a sewerage pipe on a sidewalk in front of a resident’s house in the vicinity of the graveyard. Last week the GLM finally responded to the resident’s call and repaired the pipe in Mable Drive, but left the pavement in a worse condition than they found it (see related photos).

Mable Drive, and it’s neighbouring Kiaat Drive, are both damaged to such an extent that regular and small sedans will soon not be able to travel upon it. This damaged was caused directly as a result of the burst sewerage pipes which went unchecked for three years. The test results for the microbiological analysis however revealed the presence of faecal contamination. The remedy suggested from the test results encouraged that the town’s aging sewerage treatment systems should be checked. The test results indicated that the water is not fit for human consumption, and it can be an immediate unacceptable health risk if consumed and treatment will be necessary.

The current councilor for the Democratic Alliance in Modjadjiskloof, Doreen Ramaselele, also received the lab test results, and handed a copy to the GLM with a certain Florence signing off as the recipient on behalf of GLM on the 9th of March 2021. According to councilor Ramaselele, they are still waiting for a response from the GLM. Bulletin has requested information from the GLM’s spokesperson, Lovers Maenetja, on Tuesday the 13th of July in this regard, and at the time of going to print, we had still not received any feedback.

SANParks: Sexual assault case withdrawn against CEO ■ Billy Sibuyi

The South African National Parks (SANParks) chief executive officer, Fundisile Mketeni, who in May took a special leave following sexual assault and assault GBH allegations levelled against him by a 35-year-old woman, could soon be back at work.

Mketeni appeared in the Skukuza Magistrate court on Wednesday, 14th of July, following the allegations laid against him by a woman employed at the Shalati Lodge in Skukuza, in the Kruger National Park, and the case was postponed to the 21st of July for presentations.

In a statement released by Mketeni’s legal team last month, Advocate Adriana Bevilacqua, said that the police were investigating allegations against the woman for allegedly targeting and blackmailing high-profile individuals in exchange for financial rewards.

Bevilacqua said that when her client appeared in court on the 2nd of June, the magistrate postponed the sexual assault and assault GBH case to consolidate the multitude of charges levelled against the 35-yearFundisile Mketeni old, of which some

were pending before this incident.

“The Magistrate, who postponed the matter, stated that all the cases had to be amalgamated to come up with an opposing finding,” she told Bulletin.

It has now come to the attention of Bulletin that the charges of sexual assault against the CEO of SANParks was withdrawn by the prosecution on the basis that there were no merits to the claims on Wednesday, thus only leaving the GBH assault charge, which Bevilacqua believes could also be withdrawn when her client appears again on the 21st of July.

Mketeni had, prior to the charge being withdrawn, expressed disappointment at the sexual assault allegations that were levelled against him. In a statement released by his legal team he stated that it was “unfortunate that such attempts to discredit his impeccable character has surfaced at this particular time, when he is tirelessly working to imple-

ment transformation in the environmental sector”.

His lawyer also said that Mketeni was disheartened at the complainant’s “level of dishonesty and cannot comprehend why she would have targeted him in the manner in which she did.”

Mketeni said that being a father to three teenage daughters added to him being “saddened by the spurious and perfidious allegations”.

Two other individuals were accused alongside Mketeni for assault to cause grievous bodily harm, however Bulletin has learned that the charges against the third accused were withdrawn. Bevilacqua told Bulletin that Mketeni and his co-accused, Danny Twala, also an employee of SANParks, were arraigned of the assault GBH charges.

Bevilacqua told Bulletin that in their presentations to the court on Wednesday, 14th of July, regarding why the assault GBH charges should be dropped, her attorney on record, MacBeth Incorporated, submitted that “upon inspecting evidence in the docket, we found that the medical report of the complainant, indicates that the rib cage injuries she sustained are consistent with a fall from a high wall or building”.

She also said that the independent witness, who saw her exiting the scene where she claimed the assault occurred, also corroborated that she was not injured when she left.

“The only inference that can be drawn is that she jumped the high fence enclosing the property and injured herself. All witnesses testified that they saw her hitting Mketeni with a coat hanger across the face and saw that his face was bleeding,” she stated.

Bad breath, or Halitosis, is quite a common condition and can affect anyone. It can be very embarrassing, affecting a person’s self-esteem and even cause anxiety. Most people are under the impression that mints, mouthwash, and a good brushing can solve the problem, but these give only temporary relief. If the bad breath remains for an extended period, it may be a sign of a more serious problem. This week, we will look at the different causes of bad breath and how we can manage it.

Poor Dental Hygiene. Poor brushing and flossing techniques can lead to food being trapped between the teeth. These food particles that remain in your mouth will lead to bad breath. If the particles are not removed, plaque will form on your teeth. The plaque in turn will affect your gums causing gum disease, which will further worsen the problem. Bacteria accumulating on your tongue can also lead to bad breath. Dentures that are not being cleaned properly can also cause bad breath.

Throat, nose and mouth infections. Infections of

the mouth, nose and throat may cause a postnasal drip which can contribute to bad breath.

Food. Certain pungent foods like spices, onions and garlic enter your bloodstream after digestion and are carried to your lungs that will affect your breath.

Tobacco and Smoking. Smokers are generally more prone to gum disease and thus bad breath as well. On top of this, smoking causes its own form of bad breath.

Dry mouth. Saliva is especially important for oral health and can be seen as your body’s own mouth wash as it helps remove all excess food particles from your mouth. A common sign of dry mouth or Xerostomia is Halitosis. Common causes of dry mouth are smoking, excess caffeine, medications and tobacco use. Other less common conditions causing bad breath are Chronic Reflux Disease and other digestive problems as well as certain metabolic conditions like Diabetes, Liver and Kidney Disease.

The next question then is: How do we treat

bad breath?

Step1: Practice good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing to remove foods trapped between your teeth. You can clean your tongue once daily with a tongue scraper to remove bacteria built up on the surface of your tongue.

Step 2: Make sure that you are properly hydrated by drinking plenty of water. You can also chew sugar free gum to stimulate saliva flow and cut back on caffeine as much as possible.

Step 3: If the problem persists it is time to consult your Dentist. You may suffer from a more serious condition that needs urgent attention and cannot be solved by making lifestyle changes.

■ Joe Dreyer Both the Mopani Branch of SA Hunters and the Hoedspruit Rugby Club have called a temporary end to their respective seasons due to the rise in Covid-19 infections. The league matches which were scheduled for Hoedspruit against Nelspruit, Whiteriver, and Barberton have been postponed, however the team has decided to end their practice until such a time it is safe to do so.

The decision was taken after the realization that players lives mattered more than playing, this was after the increase in infections across the country and the rugby union calling a halt to club rugby.

The SA Hunters have also called off their shooting days and will likely only resume in September, should the stats for infected people drop. According to the vice-chairperson of the Mopani Branch, Gavin Meridith, it is heartbreaking and devastating for them to stop the sport they love.

“It is never nice to stop your sport, however as a responsible organization and branch, the branch management evaluated the rising COVID-19 cases in Phalaborwa and took the decision to stop until numbers drops,” stated Meridith citing reasons that hospital and medical facilities were limited in their area.

“We need to consider our actions in line with local conditions. We made the call to stop shooting activities even before the Level 4 Lockdown.

Other branches in Lydenburg, Musina, Nelspruit, and Mokopane have all also stopped,” he stated.

Meridith mentioned that SAHGCA head office had issued a guidance to the branches, however, each branch had to evaluate their own unique situation and make the appropriate call and theirs was to stop shooting.

He also said that national shooting competitions were moved to later dates with the viability of the National shooting competition to be re-evaluated in line with covid infections.

Land Rover and Virgin Galactic joins forces

■ Roelof de Jonge Virgin Galactic announced on Sunday the 11th of July that the VSS Unity successfully reached space, completing the company’s fourth rocket-powered spaceflight.

This flight was the 22nd test flight of VSS Unity and the first test flight with a full crew in the cabin, including the company’s founder, Sir Richard Branson. The crew fulfilled a number of test objectives related to the cabin and customer experience, including evaluating the commercial customer cabin, the views of earth from space, the conditions for conducting research and the effectiveness of the five-day pre-flight training program at Spaceport America.

The VSS Unity achieved a speed of Mach 3 after being released from the mothership, VMS Eve. The vehicle reached space, at an altitude of 53.5 miles, before gliding smoothly to a runway landing at Spaceport America.

“I have dreamt about this moment since I was a child, but nothing could have prepared me for the view of Earth from space. We are at the vanguard of a new space age. As Virgin’s founder, I was honoured to test the incredible customer experience as part of this remarkable crew of mission specialists and now astronauts. I can’t wait to share this experience with aspiring astronauts around the world”, said Sir Branson, owner of Virgin Galactic.

“Our mission is to make space more accessible to all. In that spirit, and with today’s successful flight of VSS Unity, I am thrilled to announce a partnership with Omaze and Space for Humanity to inspire the next generation of dreamers. For so long, we have looked back in wonder at the space pioneers of yesterday. Now, I want the astronauts of tomorrow to look forward and make their own dreams come true.”

Land Rover was part of the mission as Virgin Galactic completed its first ever fully crewed space flight, with founder Sir Branson on board as one of four mission specialists.

The VVS Unity craft travelled with four mission specialists and two pilots on board. The sixstrong crew started and completed their mission at Spaceport America in New Mexico. Sir Branson arrived for the ‘Unity 22’ mission in a Range Rover Astronaut Edition and after a safe landing his spacecraft was towed back to waiting well-wishers by a Land Rover Defender 110.

Virgin Galactic is the world’s first commercial ‘spaceline’. It has already signed up around 600 future astronaut customers, who will be transported to their flights in vehicles supplied by partner Land Rover.

Land Rovers are part of daily life for the Virgin Galactic team, with roles which include towing the space vehicles, carrying equipment and clearing runways before take-off for the first private company to fly humans into space in a craft designed for commercial service.

Virgin Galactic founder Sir Richard Branson and Jaguar Land Rover Chief Creative Officer Prof Gerry McGovern (Officer of the Order of the British Empire or OBE) unveiled the Range Rover Astronaut Edition in 2019.

It was created by the Land Rover SV Bespoke division and is offered exclusively to Virgin Galactic Future Astronaut customers. These luxury SUV’s celebrate the partnership’s shared values and the Future Astronaut community’s historic contribution to the democratisation of space.

The Insects to travel to Italy

■ Roelof de Jonge Arno du Toit, Keagan Bontekoning, Danielle Strydom and the youngest member in the Insect Science Mountain Bike (MTB) team, Gunther Katzke, are busy with their final preparations for the upcoming World XCO Championship. These four riders will represent Team South Africa at Val di Sole, Trentino, in Italy from the 25th until the 29th of August.

What makes this achievement even more superb, according to a super proud team owner, Gerhard Booysen, is that the Insect Science MTB Team is the only South African team to have four representatives in the National squad.

Booysen will accompany the Insect Science riders to Italy, not to race this time, but to support them as they compete against the cream of

XCO Championship riders from around the globe. Katze who is a Standford Lake College student and the only rider from the Insect Science Team based around the Tzaneen area, will make his international debut.

The other three members have already experienced international competition. He will be competing in the division for Junior Men. Strydom and Bontekoning will compete in the U/23 category for women and men respectively. Du Toit will be racing in the Elite Men division. According to the four riders, they were better prepared this year with the easing of the lock down regulations allowing for sport to commence once again.

Each of the riders will have to compete a couple of rounds on a set course, with a time limit per class that allows for the number of laps to be completed. The complicated part is that a 100 or more riders are

racing on the same patch of ground at the same time.

Luckily, there are seedings in each of the categories, meaning the top or fastest riders start from the front and the slower riders make up the back of the starting line-up. But with a 100 or more riders who will be fiercely competing for top positions, the Insect Science riders, although up for it, will face one mighty task.

The team has not yet confirmed a departure date, but the initial plan is to leave a few days prior to the race. This is for them to climatize.

After the World XCO Championship, the riders with the exclusion of Katzke, will head off to the World Cup Champs in Switzerland. According to du Toit, at the World Cup events riders can take part in their private team colours. In XCO World Championship events, riders must take part in their national colours.
