DAYLIGHT ROBBERY Local motorists have cried foul as government increased the price of fuel by an unprecedented amount to breach the R17 per litre mark. From Wednesday, the 7th of April, hikes of 95 cents and R1 per litre for 93 unleaded and 95 unleaded, respectively came into play. Diesel will now cost you R14.78 per litre while a litre of 93 unleaded will set you back R17.10. A large portion of South Africa’s petrol price is made up of levies, with the General Fuel Levy (GFL) and the Road Accident Fund Levy (RAF) making up the biggest portion. This means that for every litre of petrol, you are paying the government R6.26 towards some or other tax or levy. This means that filling a 50 Litre tank with 93 octane petrol will cost you R855 of which R313 goes towards government.

■ Joe Dreyer The Non-Financial Census report released last week by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) showed that municipalities in Limpopo were not doing enough to provide free basic services. This report which is released annually, measures certain aspects of service delivery within municipalities, and analyzes these services provided by the municipalities including water, electricity, solid waste management and sewerage and sanitation.

Limpopo, according to the report, currently has 306 979 indigent households identified by the municipalities in the province. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the province this week expressed their serious concern over the numbers in the report which indicated the communities were being let down by the municipalities they elected to provide for them.

“Out of the identified indigent households only 143 544 in terms of water, 108 148 in terms of electricity, 60 372 in terms of sewerage and sanitation and 48 839 in terms of solid waste management bene-

fit from an indigent support,” said Jacques Smalle, DA Provincial spokesperson of COGHSTA. “In terms of free basic water provided, 10.6 % of consumers receiving water services, received free basic water services.”

tricity services, received free basic electricity services while only 7.2% of consumers receiving sewerage and sanitation, received free basic sewerage and sanitation from Limpopo’s municipalities.

“It is also disappointing that the report showed that very few municipalities provide free basic services even though 26 of the province’s 27 municipalities have policies in place for the provision of free basic services.”

The number of municipalities that have implemented the policy relating to the provision of free basic services are 10 municipalities in terms of water, 22 municipalities in terms of electricity, nine municipalities in terms of sewerage and sanitation and 16 municipalities in terms of solid waste management.

“The Stats SA report showed that the Limpopo government has so far failed, and needs to dedicate more resources and effort into increasing capacity and ensuring that the services rendered by municipalities benefit the poorest members of our society Jacques Smalle that cannot afford to pay for them.”

■ Billy Sibuyi “Anything is possible, we may visit again,”. These were the words of the spokesperson of the Limpopo Hawks, Capt Matimba Maluleke, during a conversation with Bulletin regarding the ongoing tender fraud investigations at the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality.

Maluleke told Bulletin that the investigations into corruption and maladministration related to tenders worth R30 million within the BPM were still being investigated, however, he could not reveal how far the Hawks had come since visiting the municipality over a month ago.

He could not divulge any sensitive information including how many people were involved and was unable to speculate as to the charges that the implicated members of the municipality may or may not face.

The municipality is under investigation for awarding these tenders, without following due processes.

The investigations include the pool of consulting engineers and service providers for infrastructure development projects and equipment hiring.

“We confirm that they seized the laptops of Senior Management of-

ficials, and documents or files. The Municipality respects law enforcement and vows to cooperate with the Hawks in dispensing their duties,” stated the spokesperson for the BPM, Jonas Mahesu. “The Municipality appeals to all officials to respect the law and further request the media to direct all their media queries regarding the details of these raids to the Hawks.”

The DA in the province has since demanded consequence management against officials who are involved in the mismanagement and corruption related to the investigations. The DA provincial leader, Jacques Smalle, said in a statement that they welcomed the raid by the Hawks on the BPM offices, after the auditor-general revealed financial mismanagement and maladministration to the tune of R450 million over the past two years. And the inability by the local municipality to investigate R99.6 million in unauthorized expenditure.

“It is clear that in this municipality, there is no consequence management against those officials who made themselves guilty of this financial mismanagement and corruption,” stated Smalle.

The anticipated strike by health workers in Limpopo organised by seven of the workers’ unions was averted at the last minute when MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, stepped in and asked administers to allow section managers to be responsible for the duty roster over the Easter holidays. Workers’ unions raised concerns that the duty rosters were filled out without the consultation of the workers.

Following their concerns, the unions planned to strike during the Easter weekend where their services would be most vital. Ramathuba convened a meeting with the service managers where the two circulars for the duty rosters were put aside, thus allowing line managers to draft a duty roster for each health facility.

According to the unions they had agreed with Ramathuba that the circulars be withdrawn to pave the way for more discussions. They further claimed that though they complained to the Head of Department, Thokozane Mhlongo, the agreement was deliberately altered

which prompted the workers to threaten strike action.

After meeting with the managers, Ramathuba said that the decision was taken to allow the line managers to draw their own roster according to the dynamics of their respective areas. “It became clear that there was a breakdown of communications when the implementation was to be realised.”

It later emerged that the decision by the administrators to force the duty roster, which was not accepted by the workers, was prompted by advice from Treasury to reduce their budget by R3,9 million. Unions also claimed that this budget cut was the reason the department rushed to change the working conditions in order to rob workers of overtime.

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) on behalf of the seven unions which were threatening to strike, said the initiative by the MEC Ramathuba was a step in the right direction. “We think the health department listened to the workers, so let us give this particular period a chance to see the benefits to the workers in the province.”

Jy kort nou ‘n permit vir jou boot by Jetty 3 ■ Joe Dreyer

Daar is steeds geen duidelikheid oor wanneer presies die gewilde Jetty 3 vir die publiek oop gemaak sal word nie. Dit ten spyte van die nuwe inperkingsregulasies wat alle openbare parke en terreine weer vir die publiek beskikbaar gestel het. In verlede week se uitgawe het ons berig dat die Tzaneense munisipaliteit nie oor die nodige mannekrag besit om die terrein veilig vir die publiek te open nie. Volgens die GTM se segsman, Neville Ndlala, was daar ‘n tekort aan personeel wat dit onmoontlik maak om die terrein se hekke vir die publiek in lyn met die Covid-19 regulasies oop te maak. Hy het ook beweer dat daar binnekort ‘n bestuurspan of kontrakteur aangestel sou word, maar daar is geen spertyd vir hierdie proses voorgelê nie.

Hierdie het groot konsternasie onder plaaslike hengellaars en bootliefhebbers veroorsaak wat nie meer toegang tot die Jetty kon verkry om hul bote vanaf te loots nie. As gevolg daarvan het meeste boot-eienaars hul na die damwal by Tzangeni gewend vanwaar hulle oor naweke die prag van die vol Tzaneen dam kon geniet. Dit het weer ander probleme tot gevolg gehad in dat groot getalle jongmense ook hierdie spesifieke plek oor naweke vir dronk partytjies benut. Daar was gevalle reeds gemeld waar van die jong suipers, die hengellaars se voertuie langs die wal as rusplek benuttig of selfs probeer het om op die bote te spring. Konflik tussen hierdie twee groepe is deur die ingryping van plaaslike sekuriteitsmaatskappye net-net vermy.

Boot-eienaars kan steeds die jetty gebruik maar hulle moet eers ‘n permit by die munisipaliteit kom kry wat hulle toegang tot die terrein sal verseker.” ‘n Moontlike oplossing Ons het later net die munisipale bestuurder, Thapelo Matlala, gesels en ‘n voorstel aan hom gemaak om die Jetty weer aan ‘n plaaslike groep te oorhandig wat die terrein sal onderhou en seker sal maak dat ingangsbeheer en sekuriteit op ‘n funksionele basis beheer sal word. Ons het aan hom genoem dat die terrein, paaie en piekniekbankies by die braai-areas drastiese onderhoud verlang aangesien hierdie duidelik nie in die laaste paar jaar gehandhaaf is nie. Matlala het erken dat die Jetty vir hom ‘n hartseer punt is en dat hy graag sou wou sien dat die terrein weer tot sy voormalige glorie herstel word.

“Ek het verlede jaar tydens die grendelperk die ingangshek met ‘n nuwe een vervang en sou graag wou sien dat daardie hele area weer ‘n ordentlike, veilige hawe vir ons gemeenskap word. Ongelukkig is my prioriteite by die opgradering van die dorp se infrastruktuur en veral die gemors met ons krag en paaie ensovoorts wat baie van my aandag verg. So ek is op hierdie stadium oop vir enige hulp en indien enige groep sou belangstel om betrokke te word in die bestuur van die terrein moet hulle asseblief met my ‘n afspraak reël en ‘n deeglik saamgestelde voorlegging vir my bring. Ek sal verseker enige hulp waardeer en dit sal vir my maklik wees om ‘n ordentlike voorlegging

voor die raad te bring om oor te beraadslaag.”

Die bekende sakeman en voormalige Lions Klub president, Muis Joubert, het Bulletin genader met ‘n voorstel om die bestuur van die Jetty 3 terrein, saam met ‘n groep ander plaaslike sakemense, oor te neem. Joubert was in die laat 90’s die president van die Lions en het in samewerking met ander plaaslike organisasies die Lions se klubhuis gebou en die terrein opgeknap en instand gehou vir baie jare. Hy besit steeds die dranklisensie vir die terrein. “Ons het in daai jare die terrein by die munisipaliteit vir ‘n totale bedrag van R7,62 per maand gehuur,” verduidelik hy. “Die Lions en lede van die gemeenskap het die terrein instand gehou en ons het die klubhuis wat so sewe jaar gelede afgebrand het, op ons eie onkostes opgerig en die jetty verleng. Die Lions het die huurkontrak oorgeneem na dit eers deur Mario Koekemoer gehuur is. Ons het self die heinings reggemaak, na die tuine omgesien en die braaiers en ander fasiliteite opgeknap. Al wat die munisipaliteit gedoen het was die rommel verwydering. Dit het uitstekend gewerk en die hele gemeenskap het daarby gebaat.”

Joubert vertel dat hy en ‘n groep besighede in die dorp aan ‘n voorlegging werk wat hulle aan die munisipale bestuurder sal voorlê om wéér so sisteem in plek te stel. Volgens hom het ‘n sekuriteitsmaatskappy reeds ingestem om die sekeruteit van Jetty 3 gratis oor te neem.

“Ons sal werk maak van die voorlegging en dit so gou moontlik indien sodat die raad daaroor kan besluit. Indien alles in plek val, beoog ons om Jetty 3 weer tot sy volle potensiaal te benut en weer die plaaslike hengel en bootklubs aan die gang te kry.”

Is this pavillion worth more than R45 million?

■ Billy Sibuyi The Selwane Sports Complex outside Phalaborwa is only 98% complete after the construction project launched in September 2015, but despite this, the chairperson of the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), Cllr Kabelo Pilusa, expressed his satisfaction with the completion of another sports complex, and several other municipal service delivery projects earlier this week.

The MPAC members, according to a statement by the municipality, visited Selwane and Mashishimale Sports Complexes respectively and also managed to visit an internal street upgrade in Namakgale on Tuesday, the 6th of April.

Cllr Pilusa said that the Mashishimale Sports Complex was now complete and would be in use in the next few weeks. He also mentioned that the stadium would be handed over to the community very soon.

There was no indication on the precise date that Selwane would be completed though. This after a whopping R45 518 378, 36 was spent on the construction of the complex which was originally estimated to cost R32 367 803, 53. Reportedly one of the factors listed as influencing the more than R12 million increase in the cost of the project included the increase in value added tax from 14% to 15%. According to an insider at the municipality, there were other factors that influenced the increase, but these could not be confirmed.

The professional services tender for the project was awarded to Uranus Consulting Engineers, a company based in Tzaneen, who did the planning and drawings of the project. Nandzu Trade & General, a company from Nkowankowa, was then awarded the construction tender. “Should the stadium be complete, one still wonders how people driving from other places will make it there, as the Selwane Road is in a bad condition,” remarked one resident from the area. No further information on this project was available at the time of going to print.

Editor’s comment: Bulletin sent an inquiry for clarity to the spokesperson of the BPM, Jonas Mahesu, but at the time of going to print had not received any feedback. It is very apparent that municipalities are willing to invest large amounts of money into seemingly non-essential projects such as sports complexes and libraries when in the vicinity of these eventual white elephants, their voting pool live in absolute squalor. These projects serve no real purpose in the improvement of the lives of the impoverished, conversely, R45 million would supply a large portion of residents in these rural areas with running water, basic services and decent RDP housing. At the very least. “Panem et circenses”

Park finally barricaded ■ Joe Dreyer Following months of complaints lodged with the Greater Tzaneen Municipality regarding the disgusting state of the park between Poinsettia Street and Park Street, the GTM have finally heeded the community’s call and have this week started cordoning off a large section of the park. On Tuesday the municipal vehicle was spotted in Park Street where workers were digging holes for the erection of barricades to prevent the taxi drivers from the area, from entering the park and washing their vehicles in the dam.

Bulletin reported on the state of this park which was once a bird sanctuary and is currently still listed on Google Maps as a Nature Preserve. We posted images of graffiti on the barks of trees in

that park which promoted the area as a carwash. One man was stopped in the process of erecting a shack at the site.

“The guys are busy barricading the site so that we can solve the problem of these guys washing their vehicles there. Hopefully the barricades will prevent people from parking their vehicles in the park,” said Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the municipality. We asked him for more details on the project such as an estimated time of completion, costs and possible prosecution of those who would still transgress the new rules, but at the time of going to print we had received no further information from him. We also do not know if the barricades will be planted wooden or concrete posts, or another palisade fence such as the illegally erected one at Minitzani Park, but we will keep you updated as the project progresses.

SAPS hunt shebeens

Con artists and potholes

During the Easter weekend, the Lulekani police stood firm in their resolve to shut down illegal operations and closed down two illegal shebeens, seizing 16 000 litres of alcohol. The two shebeen owners, each 31 years of age, were charged with selling liquor without a licence, when they were unable to produce a liquor licence when requested to do so by the police. They were each given a fine of R1 000, and their alcohol seized.

During the operation, nine other Liquor outlets were issued with written J534 notices that included a note giving them the option of admitting guilt and paying a fine without having to go to court. During the same operation four people were arrested for drunk driving and twelve others for public indecency.

According to Sergeant Reoh Mabunda, the Lulekani Police Spokesperson, shebeens are possibly housing many criminals “as they hibernate themselves knowing or merely thinking that the police won’t notice them as the shebeen is illegal and not really known”.

Scores of youths from Nkowankowa and Dan village took advantage of the bad state of the region’s roads to make money for themselves through filling the potholes which the Greater Tzaneen Municipality seem reluctant to do as part of their service delivery obligations. Since the beginning of the torrential rains a month ago, many of the streets in towns, villages and townships are in a state of serious disrepair. Scores of young people can be found standing next to roads asking motorists for money in exchange for filling the potholes with gravel and soil.

Among the roads now in the hands of community volunteers are the Nkowankowa-Letaba access road near the Letaba cross also known as Bindzulani. The youths stand next to heaps of sand on the side of the roads holding posters requesting donations from drivers and upon receipt of said monetary compensation, shovel the sand into the potholes.

This has however opened the way for a new form of con artistry whereby these young boys fill up the potholes, and then once the vehicles have paid and passed, empty the sand out of the hole once again.

They repeat this fraudulent activity right throughout the day and one young man said that they make in excess of R200 a day in this manner. The longer the municipality drag their feet, the more money will be

We will close many more shebeens,” she concluded.

The GTM released a statement a month ago claiming that the disastrous roads infrastructure would be tended to as a matter of urgency. Two weeks later they released another statement attempting to explain why this had not been done. It is now another two weeks later and the roads look no better – in fact the roads look worse given that the roads maintenance team have taken it upon themselves to fill most of the massive craters with sand and stone.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) requested an updated roads maintenance plan from the municipality a few weeks ago and to date this has not been provided.

We spoke to the municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, this week who confirmed that the roads team was busy repairing potholes along various routes according to a maintenance plan which was presented to him. “When it comes down to the operational level, I am not always intimately acquainted with all the dealings of the teams. Those details will be released by the manager of the department. I can assure the residents however that I have seen the plan which was approved by the council and is currently being implemented. If there are roads that are in serious and urgent need of major repairs, please do send the details of these routes to our communications team.”

Demerits start in July ■ Billy Sibuyi The long-awaited driver demerit system that Bulletin reported on last year, is likely to come into effect at the beginning of July this year. The Administration Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act (AARTO) has been in progress since the first trial in 2008, with its commencement planned for the 1st of July.

South Africa currently ranks 13th out of 195 countries for its number of road deaths per capita, and the demerit system is seen as a magic weapon to curb the country’s road fatality rate. AARTO will punish drivers who are guilty of traffic offences or infringements by imposing demerit points that could lead to the suspension or cancellation of licenses, or professional driving permits.

It will (in theory) encourage the payment of fines and reduce the burden on South African courts, by removing the initial option to elect to appear in court. The Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) said that within 32 days of receipt of a fine notice, an alleged infringer has several options to choose from which mainly includes paying the fine within 32 days of receipt of the notice and receive an automatic 50% discount of the fine amount or one could elect to be tried in court.

Upon receipt of a fine notice via registered mail, the alleged infringer will be allowed to arrange with RTIA for paying their fine in instalments of R750 or more over a period of six months. Should you not respond within the first 32 days, according to the RTIA, they will send a letter of serving an infringement notice.

The number of points incurred will be dependent on the nature of the traffic offence or charge.

Currently, there are over 2,500 separate charges.

All drivers will start with zero points. Once the limit of points is exceeded, a driving licence is suspended for three months. Driving a vehicle during this ‘prohibition period’ is a criminal offense, subject to a fine or jail time.

If a licence is suspended for the third time, it will be cancelled, and a driver must start from scratch with a learner’s license test. Every motorist starts with 0 points and the maximum permissible number of points allocated is 15. In other words, a person can drive until they have 15 points accumulated from contraventions committed.

If a person incurs demerit points exceeding 15, that person will be disqualified from driving or operating a motor vehicle and should immediately hand in any driver’s license or professional driving permit to the Issuing Authority for retention.

Rhino Court reopens

SANParks has welcomed the reopening of the Skukuza Regional Court which resumed its operations last week, on the 1st of April. The court has not operated for over a year due to a legal battle waged by the Mpumalanga Regional Court President, Naomi Annette Engelbrecht, to have the court closed and for all its court cases to be transferred to Mhala Regional Court, in Thulamahashe.

Earlier this year, the Constitutional Court dismissed her application for leave to appeal a High Court decision thus allowing for the Skukuza Regional court to continue operating inside the Kruger National Park .

“Today we are proud to welcome back court officials to the revamped Skukuza Regional Court to

continue with their work of finding justice for our iconic rhino species, rangers, and all who are involved in the anti-poaching campaign. This move will help in saving time and money for our rangers and officials when they must give crucial evidence in poaching related cases. We are happy the issue of the future of this court is behind us and we can now move on and concentrate on the task at hand,” stated the SANParks Chief Executive Officer, Fundisile Mketeni.

Child killer remanded ■ Billy Sibuyi

Lizzy Malatji (34), the women accused of murdering her nephew two weeks ago in Lulekani, was remanded in custody until the 12th of April. Malatji was arrested by the Lulekani Police in March after she had brutally stabbed and killed her 5-year-old nephew when he was left in her care.

She was scheduled to appear in the Lulekani Magistrate Court on the 30th of March, however she did not appear as she was admitted to hospital after she showed signs of mental illness whilst in the Lulekani SAPS holding cells. The murdered boy who, according to the police, had been left in the care of his un-

cle by his father who had gone to work in Phalaborwa, was found dead by his uncle when he returned from collecting Mopani worms from a nearby veld.

“It is alleged that the uncle came back from fetching Mopani worms, and he was surprised when he saw his wife with blood stains on her clothes,” stated the SAPS Limpopo spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo. “When he forcefully entered the house, he discovered the lifeless body of the boy inside a bucket with severe stab wounds.”

Mojapelo said that the police and an ambulance were immediately summoned, and the boy was certified dead on the scene. A murder case was opened, and the suspect was immediately arrested.

Blue bunny brigade spread Easter joy ■ Roelof de Jonge Tzaneen’s elderly residents from retirement villages and old age homes around town were pleasantly surprised when members of the Democratic Alliance (DA) paid them a visit this week to deliver Easter eggs as a token of care and thoughtfulness in the spirit of Easter. Frontline workers from the South African Police Service, hospitals and emergency services also had a taste of sweetness when they too received a visit from the most unlikely group of blue-clad bunnies.

The sweet gesture was the love child of DA Constituency Head and MP, Desireé van der Walt, and her fellow party members. “I started the culture of handing out Easter eggs over the Easter weekend around 1999 and it has since become an institution of sorts in my election wards,” explained Van der Walt. “Essential workers like nurses, doctors, firefighters, rescue workers and policemenand women work under tremendous stress over the Easter holiday, especially now since the dawn of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Van der Walt and her team which included Chrisma Bredenkamp, Magda Stone, Chrizelle Dreyer and Rene Pohl, made their rounds on Monday morning and at every stop it was clear that this small gesture truly touched the hearts of those on the receiv-

ing end as much as it did those who were doing the giving.

“There are many of our elderly citizens at old age homes and frail care centres that don’t have family living nearby or simply don’t have the means to acquire Easter eggs for themselves, and I feel it is important to share this gesture with them too. It is purely a token of appreciation and to show we sincerely care.”

Even the frontline workers at Van Velden Hospital received a touch of Easter courtesy of the blue brigade.

Agri-learners wise up on irrigation matters Merensky High School’s gr.12 Agricultural Technology learners had the privilege of completing a SABI (South African Irrigation Institute) course at this school from the 29th until the 31st of March.

Theoretical as well as practical irrigation components were presented in the school hall as well as in the orchards. Under the guidance of the course leader, Annemarie van der Westhuizen of SABI, the learners gained first-hand experience with filters, pipes, micro and drip irrigation and many other requirements for a successful irrigation.

In addition to demonstrations offered

by AGRICO, NETAFIM, KSB, CROP SYSTEMS and JABECO also provided practical guidance, for which the personnel and learners of Agri-Merensky are grateful for. Agri-Merensky wishes to thank Marius Jansen van Rensburg, the branch manager of AGRICO Tzaneen, in particular for the support.

A test was also taken on the last day, after which the successful learners each received a SABI certificate. Agri-Merensky is especially proud of the top three candidates, Andrea van Jaarsveld (top), Johann Roux (second) and Ronan Theron (third).

Here are the 72 learners from Agri-Merensky who all attended the recent irrigation course at Merensky High School.

Twee gesoute Suid-Afrikaanse atletiek-afrigters, Rina van Heerden en Marna van der Merwe, het vanaf die 24ste tot die 26ste Maart die Hoërskool Merensky besoek om spesialis-afrigting aan die atlete van dié skool te gee.

Hierdie afrigters het Merensky se atlete die fyner kunsies in veral hekkies, spiesgooi, diskus en gewigstoot geleer.

Van Heerden het in 1993 haar nasionale kleure vir 100m en 400m hekkies verwerf en het in 1994 aan die wêreldkampioenskap teen 96 lande Suid-Afrika verteenwoordig. Sy het ook in 2013 aan die wêreldkampioenskap in Brazilië deelgeneem.

Van der Merwe spog ook, behalwe vir haar verskeie grade in sport vir Menslike Bewegingskunde en Biomechanika, ook met ‘n Atletiek Suid-Afrika Vlak 3-kwalifikasie, wat haar in aanmerking kom om afrigtingskursusse wêreldwyd te kan aanbied.

Altesaam 25 leerders van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster het aan die Suid-Afrikaanse Wiskunde Olimpiade se eerste rondte op die 11de Maart deelgeneem.

Daar het drie leerders het na die tweede rondte deurgedring wat op die 18de Mei sal plaasvind. Hierdie leerders is Aakifa Osmany (gr.8), Esmi Nortjé (gr.12) en Eben Fourie (gr.12).

Die Suid-Afrikaanse Wiskunde Federasie moedig graag leerders aan om aan die Wiskunde Olimpiade deel te neem. Volgens dié federasie gaan Wiskunde oor denke en die ontdekking en validering van metodes en vaardighede om probleme op te los.

Ouers briesend vir ASA atletiekkampioenskap

‘n Aantal atlete van Tzaneen se twee plaaslike hoërskole, Merensky en Ben Vorster, ding vandeesweek by Atletiek Suid-Afrika (ASA) se nasionale skolekampioenskap teen die room van die land se skole-atlete mee.

Hierdie kampioenskapsbyeenkoms wat in die Paarl in die WesKaap gehou word, het Woensdag die 7de April begin en sal die 10de April eindig.

Dié nasionale byeenkoms is egter in omstredenheid gehul. Die ouers van die atlete wie van heinde en verre gereis het om hul kinders te sien deelneem, is ontstoke omrede daar geen regstreekse dekking en beeldsending van hierdie prestige byeenkoms is nie.

Dit beteken dat die ouers slegs na die dag se gebeure eers beelde van die atlete kan sien, andersins vanweë die uitslae wat op ‘n webwerf beskikbaar is na afloop van die dag se gebeure.

Die rede vir hierdie ongelukkigheid van die ouers en omstredenheid oor die regstreekse dekking is die feit dat Suid-Afrika se nasionale uitsaaier die alleen-regte het vir dekking van enige nasionale byeenkomste. Die SABC het egter laat weet dat hul nie dekking aan hierdie geleentheid gaan gee nie, maar wil terselfdetyd nie van sy alleenreg vir regstreekse dekking afsien nie.

Daar is wel ‘n private beeldsendmaatskappy wat die atlete verfilm, maar weens die regstreekse uitsaairegte kan die maatskappy eers na die dag se gebeure die filmmateriaal beskikbaar stel. Verskeie atletiek-unies het hul provinsiale byeenkomste sonder geen probleme regstreeks gebeeldsend.

Dit is duidelik dat die administrateurs van ASA geen poging aangewend het om hierdie omstrede kwessie die hoof te bied nie, en bloot die nasionale uitsaaier se afwesigheid aanvaar het sonder om ‘n alternatiewe uitsaaier te vind.

Die oorsprong en blaam vir al hierdie omstredenheid en die feit dat geen

toeskouers toegelaat word nie, kan slegs op die meestal belaglike maatreëls van die Covid-19 pandemie geplaas word en die staatsamptenare wat die reëls en regulasies deurvoer. Ten minste het die atlete die geleentheid om naam vir hul self te maak teen die beste van Suid-Afrika.

Die Hoërskool Ben Vorster se atlete wie die Limpopo-span by die SA kampioenskap verteenwoordig is Shaun Roulston (100m en 110m hekkies), Paballo Legodi (100m en 200m), Theto Maake

(100m hekkies) en Meghan-Lee Mans (gewigstoot en diskus).

Die oud-Vossie leerder wie in 2020 matriek geskryf het, Jolandi van der Merwe, het ook gekwalifiseer het vir die spiesgooi-item vir vroue o/20.

Die atlete van die Hoërskool Merensky wie vir die Limpopo-span aan die SA-kampioenskap deelneem is Reese Coetzee (spiesgooi, seuns o/18) en Klara Pretorius (90m hekkies, meisies o/16).
