■ Jeff Jackson The Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, had on Friday left residents of Limpopo and Giyani in suspense after she failed to release the report on the more than R4 billion Nandoni-Giyani water reticulation project implemented by the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) in 2011. The project was marred in controversy from the start as before it commenced, there was litigation over which companies were to be appointed.

The project, which was initially estimated at a cost of just R500 000, aimed at supplying villages in the Giyani area with water. Its cost shockingly skyrocketed to more than R4 billion until the newly appointed Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni, described it as a waste of money and called for action. The project came into being after a visit

by President Jacob Zuma, but to date, people of Giyani have no water.

Mkhwebane broke the ice on the matter on Friday and said that some of the parties implicated in the scandal have still to testify in the matter and this was the reason why her office could not make the report public. She said that when she had solicited comments from the affected parties she will release the report.

Among the parties implicated are Lepelle Northern Water (LNW), Mopani District Municipality (MDM) and former Water and Forestry Minister, Nomvula Mokonyane. After the intervention

Then reports emerged that workers were on strike as they were not receiving their salaries.

The lack of water for the residents of Giyani forced then Minister of Water, Forestry and Fisheries, Gugile Nkwinti to visit the area in 2018 where he demanded answers from the Lepelle Northern Water as to why they were requesting even more money while people were still thirsty.

In 2019 Premier Stanley Mathabatha went to Makosha village to launch the first phase of the project and promised residents that they will soon receive water.

A few months later Mboweni called for an end to the project which he termed a “waste of money” and instructed the Serious Crimes Investigating Unit (SCIU) to act on the matter. The SCIU have since filed papers in the South Gauteng High court seeking the attachment of the properties of the individuals implicated in the matter.

However, the current minister, Lindiwe Zulu has put the long serving Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Lepelle Northern Water (LNW), Phil Legodi, on suspension for alleged corruption.

Though Legodi spoke out before the outcome of the disciplinary hearing saying that he was witch hunted, Minister Zulu solicited the services of the Hawks to handle the matter.

House robber caught

Member of Parliament and former chairperson of the Parliamentary Constitutional Review Committee on the Amendment of section 25 of the Constitution to expropriate land without compensation, Vincent Smith, was released on bail of R30 000 last Friday at Palm Ridge Commercial Court.

This after he was arrested for allegedly receiving a bribe of R693 000 while he was the chairperson of the Correctional Services portfolio.

Smith, who represented the ANC in the committee before he was removed from the committee when the scandal broke out back in 2019, made a name for himself when he defended members of the ANC, the DA and other minority parties from the verbal attacks by the mobs bussed into the township of Lenyenye by the Red Overall Circus brigade at the community hall.

His name was linked to state capture and corruption when the former Bosasa COO, Angelo Agrizzi, testified before the Zondo Commission on State Capture that Smith had received R693 000 and the installation of security features at his home. Though he denied the allegations, he was forced to recuse himself from the committee while waiting for his day in court.

The Zondo Commission was appointed by President Jacob Zuma after it emerged that the Saxonwold based Gupta family had influence over the president, and even intervened when the cabinet was appointed. Though arrests were not expected now, several politicians have since been arrested in connection with evidence which was submitted at the commission.

The Parliamentary Review committee on the amendment of section 25 of the Constitution to Expropriate land without compensation has now finished its task and the matter has been referred to parliament for legislative framework.

The Agriculture minister said last week that the Portfolio Committee on Land was busy processing the blue paper before it could be voted on.

The police in Namakgale arrested one of three suspects who robbed a group of people in their home just after midnight on Tuesday. According to the police report, the 23-year old male victim was inside his home with 17 other occupants when they were accosted by three gun-wielding bravados.

The gang of would-be crooks demanded cash from the inhabitants and managed to relieve the owner of the house of his cell phone and a large amount of cash.

The trio ran outside to their awaiting getaway car. The victim and his 17 housemates set off after the robbers and once they made it outside the property noticed that the gang was having car trouble with their BMW which did not want to start. Realizing the depth of the human

reported to the office of the public protector and certain law enforcement agencies.

Two years after the project was implemented, in 2013, when then premier Cassel Mathale was removed after his administration allegedly embezzled more than R2 billion, Nomvula Mokonyane was instructed by then President Jacob Zuma to take over the control of water in Mopani and be placed in her department nationally.

Soon it emerged that a contractor from Johannesburg with links to the boyfriend of the minister oversaw the project. The project’s initial R500 000 cost then ballooned to R2 billion and later skyrocketed to R 3 billion and still

It is not certain why the armed suspects did not fire even a single shot at their pursuers, or why the vehicle did not start.

Nor is it known why this specific house was targeted, although it is speculated that the victim owns a spaza shop in Namakgale and the crooks knew that he takes cash home.

Two suspects were caught outside Hoedspruit on Monday this week following a business robbery at a café in the Oaks village. The local police were assisted in the arrest of the suspects by the local Farm Watch, after a report of a business robbery just after 13:30 that afternoon.

Upon arrival at the scene, they were told that two suspects wearing masks entered the shop, armed with a firearm. They were told which direction the suspects fled in and a pursuit followed. A vehicle matching the description given was spotted with two occupants in Hoedspruit town. The said vehicle was pulled over and searched. The police found one revolver with five live rounds and an amount of cash. The suspects were immediately apprehended, and the vehicle seized.

700 000 hectares to be leased by state ■ Joe Dreyer Members of the public will be able to apply to lease 700 000 hectares of underutilized or vacant state-owned land in the seven provinces. This was the statement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday in his weekly newsletter in which he stated “with land ownership still concentrated in the hands of the few, and agriculture primary production and value chains mainly owned by white commercial farmers, the effects of our past remain with us today.”

Some have viewed this move as another expected electioneering tactic given the ANC’s loosening grip on the seat of power. It comes on the heels of a announcement by the minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DLRD), Thoko Didiza, last week Thursday that 896 state farms will be made available to the public.

The farms are situated in the Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, and North West. The department has said that it will be advertising the notices for the lease of this land within the next two weeks.

Didiza said that the process does not fall under the Expropriation of land without compensation as that had been referred to parliament for processing.

“South Africa has vast tracts of land suitable

for production, with 37,9% of our total land area currently being used for commercial agriculture.

Like many other countries, our arable land is under threat from land degradation, water scarcity, and urban encroachment. We are losing prime agricultural land through land use changes” said Ramaphosa. “By depriving our people of the right to land on which they depended for sustenance and livelihoods, this great injustice effectively engineered the poverty of many South Africans.” added Ramaphosa.

According to him, beneficiaries will sign lease agreements with the state and pay rent consistent with the value of the land. Beneficiaries will allegedly also receive training in financial management and enterprise development. The programme will “prioritize” women, youth and persons with disabilities as beneficiaries. In addition to the land acquisition itself, the Department will invest in infrastructure, equipment and machinery to enable these entrepreneurs to run successful businesses.

They must dispel the stereotype that only white farmers are commercially successful in South Africa, and that black farmers are perpetually emerging,” wrote the President. ***Editor’s note: Lest we forget. Outside Tzaneen there lies a large signboard among the tall grass

adjacent to the R71 enroute to Letsitele. It was toppled over by a grader. Upon this signboard is written “Moshupatsela Agri-hub”.

This signboard was erected two years ago at the entrance of one of the Mopani District’s many empty promises. It used to be a very productive 158-hectare mango farm (Bali) boasting 40 000 mango trees. But then it was purchased by the Mopani District from the Land Bank in 2007. Thirteen years later the farm still lies fallow with roughly 80 families squatting on the premises. The multi-million Rand palisade fencing around the property along with just about every piece of finishing including window frames and doors from the main structures on the property have been stolen. Essau Remaketse Nzutha (33 at the time) was arrested in 2014 for stealing R224 050 worth of fencing material off Bali. As you read this, I am still awaiting clarity on the plans for this piece of land.

But don’t worry because more land and more money will fix everything… even the incomplete, and the memories of the lies that accompanied them.

Phalaborwa morale at Follow up: Jetty 3 shelter closed an all-time low ■ Joe Dreyer and Billy Sibuyi

The undeniable inefficiencies of the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality (BPM) are no longer excusable. Residents of this municipality which includes Phalaborwa town, Namakgale, Lulekani and Masheshemale still do not have adequate water supply, still do not have consistent electricity supply and are still forced to live with the stomach curdling stench of raw sewerage which regularly flood their pothole riddled streets.

The leadership of the municipality seemingly turn a blind eye to the queries by not only the residents and rate payers who fund their lifestyles, but also blatantly ignore inquiries by particularly this newspaper. The editor of this newspaper has on more than one occasion been accused of ulterior and politically biased motives by certain members within the municipality.

This week, a private citizen, Pierre Engelbrecht, came to the rescue and borrowed the municipality his TLB free of charge, in order for them to fix a damaged water main after the municipality had waited for their own TLB they allegedly hired for the job, to arrive for several days. During this time, residents were left with no water.

“I am not doing this for publicity or anything, I just wanted to help people get water. I mean we worked there at the site for two hours with my TLB and at 20:00 that evening, the hired TLB arrived,” explained Engelbrecht.

“It doesn’t make sense to have a TLB arrive on site at 20:00 in the evening when your cost to hire the machine triples. Why not order the machine for the morning?”

Just across from the municipal offices, by the post office building, squeakyclean water has been streaming from a pipe for over six weeks without being attended to. Adding to the long list of borderline human rights violations, is the scourge of illegal rubbish dumping which has reared its filthy head, and

which this publication reported on earlier this month.

The BPM promised to tend to the matter, but this has not happened.

Some of the temporary homeless shelters erected by municipalities across the country after the 21-day lockdown period was announced

by President Ramaphosa in March, have been officially shut down. In Limpopo, homeless shelters in two of the five districts, including the controversial Jetty 3 site in Aquapark, have officially been evacuated.

The five temporary shelters were housing about 500 homeless people who were left stranded during the Covid-19 lockdown period. The temporary shelters were established in conjunction with local and district municipalities, and other relevant departments in March to ensure that the homeless did not roam the streets.

The Department of Social Development has been providing psychosocial support to the users of the shelters, meals and also reuniting them with their families.

To date, most of them were reunited with their families and only 55 are still housed at the temporary shelters, with 35 accommodated at the Musina Showgrounds, 11

at Thabazimbi and nine at the Polokwane showgrounds.

“The MEC for social development and former mayor of the Mopani District, Nkakareng Rakgoale, expressed her appreciation towards the donors, volunteers and government employees from various departments, who worked hard to ensure the smooth running of the shelters,” said departmental spokesperson, Witness Tiva in a statement.

The Jetty 3 site became a bone of contention when it was setup almost overnight by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality in the heart of one of the neighbourhoods in Aquapark without consultation with the residents whose properties border the site. Many were concerned about the 45 homeless housed there as they were uncertain of how long they would be staying at the site, and whether they would be willing to vacate the area when the time came for the shelter to close.

“I can assure you; all the homeless people have been evacuated from that site and it has been closed down,” said GTM municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala.

1 578 suspects arrested No bail for councillor ■ Jeff Jackson The Police in Limpopo have recovered 15 illegal firearms and several rounds of ammunition at different locations during joint operations that were conducted throughout the province this past week. According to the police, the firearms will be subjected to ballistic investigations to determine if they were previously involved in the commission of serious and violent crimes.

The various operations led to the arrest of 1 578 suspects aged between 21 and 47. The suspects were arrested for various crimes ranging from conspiracy to commit business robbery, cash in transit heists (CIT), possession of illicit cigarettes, bribery, illegal immigration, possession of drugs, possession of dagga, murder, attempted murder, robberies, rape, sexual assault, assault GBH, assault common, various sexual offences, burglary residential and business, stock theft, arson, shoplifting,

common theft, drug related crimes, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, illegal trading in liquor and carrying of dangerous weapons.

During some of the arrests, members of the Limpopo Highway Patrol Unit arrested three suspects at ga-Masemola on Wednesday, the 30th of September for possession of drugs (Nyaope). All three of these suspects, aged between 38 and 47, were found to be out on bail after they were previously arrested for armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms. A further charge of bribery was added after one of the suspects took out R1 000 and tried to bribe the patrolmen.

On Wednesday morning this week, the police in Malamulele in the Vhembe District, foiled a planned business robbery and arrested three suspects. The suspects had already tied up a security officer at a business complex when the police arrived. They were immediately apprehended and two firearms

and ammunition, grinding tools, a crowbar, a motor vehicle and overalls were confiscated.

During the operations, police also confiscated 4 573 illicit cigarettes, 24 dangerous weapons, 1 443 grams of dagga, 36 grams of nyaope, 42 knives and 302 bottles of liquor. A total of 1 265 fines were issued. The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the various magistrate’s courts across the province soon.

The murdered bodies of a young couple were found in their bedroom in ga-Rapitsi Village, Itireleng Section of Bolobedu on Tuesday afternoon. The neighbour of the couple who was the employer of the 21-year old male victim, came across their bodies when he went to their home to investigate the man’s absence from work. His

An ANC ward councillor within the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM) was arrested on charges of raping a 14-year old girl. He appeared in the Bolobedu Magistrate Court on Monday and was denied bail. Ngwako Lawrence Seshoka (58) was arrested by the police in Mokwakwaila just outside Tzaneen after the child told her parents about the incident. The girl was allegedly offered a lift

by Seshoka on Thursday, the 1st of October at around 12:00. The councillor then drove into the bushes next to Rampepe village where he allegedly raped the child. After the vulgar act, he reportedly took her home,

gave her money and a cell phone and told her not to tell anyone. Later, the child started crying when questioned by her mother about the cell phone. She then told her what had happened and the matter was reported to the police who then arrested the ANC councillor.

According to the girl's parents, Seshoka, later arrived with police claiming that the girl had stolen his cell phone. He was remanded in custody until the 14th of October for further police investigations.

Meanwhile, spokesperson for the GLM, Lovers Maenetje, said the GLM council will soon sit to deliberate upon the future of councillor Ngwako Lawrence Seshoka.

18-year old partner was found dead next to him – their 1-year old baby lay between them screaming. The victims, identified as Nius Malatji and Lusia Malapane, were found with multiple stab wounds on their bodies and were certified dead on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage and can only be determined by the police investigations which are continuing.

Another person was found dead under a bridge on the R71 this past weekend, adding to the list of unsolved deaths in Phalaborwa. The police have confirmed that a body of an unknown person was found inside the water under a bridge on Saturday, the 3rd of October along the R71 Namakgale-Phalaborwa road.

A few months ago, the body of woman was found near Impala Park, and to date the police are still investigating the case.

Just last month a man believed to be in his 80’s was also found dead in the same veld, but it was later stated that he could have died due to a heart attack. Joyce Ngoveni, the niece of Sameta Ngoveni who died after being hit by a car in July in Majeje, is still hoping that the driver of the Cressida which hit and killed her aunt will come forward, albeit four months have passed.

In the latest incident the discovery was made by passerby’s who notified the police.

Upon arrival, they found an unknown African male in the small stream running under the bridge. He was certified dead

by EMS personnel on the scene. According to Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the man is unknown and could have been in his mid to late fourties. “He was wearing a blue track suit top, brown trousers, a white shirt and blue tekkies,” stated Mojapelo.

Meanwhile the Phalaborwa Police are still appealing for help in identifying the body of an African man who was hit by a car more than four months ago on the R71. Phalaborwa Police spokesperson, Sgt Elvis Mongwe, said the deceased who is believed to be in his early thirties, met his death when he was hit by a vehicle travelling on the R71 at the Lulekani turnoff at about 05:45 in the morning.

Unauthorized dumping in Boundary continues ■ Joe Dreyer The unsightly mess that greets commuters as they travel along Boundary Street in Tzaneen is fast becoming another hot potato for the owner of the land upon which mountains of building rubble have been dumped. Renier de Lange explained that while he owns the land, he was not responsible for the building rubble being offloaded at the site.

“I was in the process of selling the land to a local buyer who assured me that all his arrangements were made, and everything was in order for the purchase. We even signed the purchase agreement. I noticed he was starting to offload small loads of soil for the filling of the land as one does when you plan on building, so I initially left the matter there.

However, as time passed, he never came back to me and so I cancelled the agreement and have since taken the land off the market.” De Lange has

not been able to reach the man on his phone either.

In the meantime, the potential buyer has continued to dump loads of building rubble at the site on an almost weekly basis, which has in turn caused residents of the area extreme discomfort. “The place has now turned into a dumpsite and it is most likely going to cost me money out of my own pocket to remove the rubble and restore the area. This is not how one operates, and it has become a frustration to me that this guy is simply not answering my calls or even contacting me back,” said De Lange.

Bulletin tried contacting the man on two numbers provided to us but were unable to reach him for comment. ■ Jeff Jackson Swimmers had the opportunity to step back onto the blocks on Saturday, the 3rd of October. The first Age Group Gala of the season took place at Warmbaths High School.

Several Laerskool Tzaneen swimmers took part and were eager to place good times on the data base. Jané and Kobus Auret, Mari and Mia Bruwer, Inge du Plessis, Marny du Plessis, Ulrich Engelbrecht, Elné and Yulinke Haynes, Christiaan van Vuuren, MJ Pohl, Simoné Schonken, Mignon Smit, George Taylor and Liandri Terblanche all managed some decent post-lockdown times.

“It was a challenge to take part in this gala because of the new regulations. The parents were not allowed to enter the area at the swimming pool, only the swimmers who took part could enter when it was time for their event and no other people, except the officials, were allowed to enter the swimming area. It felt good to swim a gala again and to see all my other swimmingfriends. I am very satisfied with my times and excited for my friends because we all had fun and gave our best,” said Elné after the fact.

“It was our first gala since lockdown started and it was really different than before. Outside the pool, we were required to wear our masks and keep a safe distance from each other and as soon as you entered the marshalling area, they took your temperature. I improved some of my times and are overly excited about that and it was great to see all my friends again,” said Mignon.

‘n Aantal swemmers van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster het op Saterdag die 3de Oktober by die ‘Age Group 1’-swembyeenkoms op Bela-Bela ‘n rits prestasies ingeryg.

Dit was veral Armand van Vuuren (seuns o/14) en Marnus Kruger (seuns o/16) wie gewys het waar Dawid die wortels gegrawe deur met ‘n aantal top plekke na afloop van dié geleentheid te spog.

Van Vuuren het ‘n eerste plek in die 200m rugslag-item behaal en dit met ‘n derde plek in die 100m rugslag-item opgevolg. Hy het ook ‘n derde plek in die 100m vryslag-item agter sy naam geskryf. In die 200m vryslag en die 200m individuele wisselslag het van Vuuren in beide hierdie items vierde plekke behaal.

Kruger het in die o/16-ouderdomsgroep heelwat meer teenstand ervaar, maar het nietemin puik geswem om in die 200m borsslagitem te seëvier en op die trappie van die podium vir die tweede plek gestaan vir sy verrigting in die 200m rugslag-item.

Kruger het twee vierde plekke vir die 100m vlinderslag en 200m individuele wisselslag vermag. In die 200m vryslag-item was hy vyfde en vir die 100m vryslag-item het hy in die sesde plek geëindig.

The announcement of the pupil leadership team at Stanford Lake College came after the pupil and staff body voted for the leaders that they believe will best serve the school and its community next year. Mada Buliani was elected as Head Boy whilst the position of Head Girl was filled by Hloni Mangena. Their elected deputies are Josh Fairhead and Callan Schultz.

Further to this, the leaders of the boarding houses were also announced. The elected leaders of the boys’ boarding houses, Founders North and South, are Heinrich Maritz and Warwick Melville respectively. The girls’ boarding houses, Serala, Lakeside and Ken Shuter, will be led by Naledi Lebati, Nkhensani Khosa and Oli Mulungwa respectively. Anja Maree will lead and guide the day scholars.

Throughout their high school careers thus far, these

pupils have upheld and practiced the values of what it means to be a true Stanfordian; integrity, respect, quality, commitment, courage, Tshanduko and Ubuntu.

They have proven themselves in the classroom and on the sports field. Now it is their time to stand up and lead the Stanford community in 2021.

The pupil leadership committee of 2020 have been faced with an unusual year. Despite not being at school during the early stages of lockdown, the leaders continued to inspire and encourage their peers with motivational videos. The leaders have shown maturity during the challenges they have faced and have shown grace in being denied many of the opportunities experienced by their predecessors. The leadership team of 2021 have big boots to fill but Stanford is certain that they have the right pupils at the helm, to drive the school forward with integrity and passion.

Rugby-afrigters nou meer wys ■ Roelof de Jonge Die Laerskool Tzaneen spog die afgelope jare met indrukwekkende uitslae op die rugbyveld wat sy spanne behaal het.

Volgens dié skool se mediaen bemarkingsbeampte, Ula Schoeman, is dit veral te danke aan die skool se afrigters wat ure weg spandeer om die jongste afrigtingstegnieke aan te kweek.

Dit was weer die geval toe vier van dié skool se afrigters ‘n kursus by die Peacanwood Estate Golf and Country Club, geleë op die oewer van die Hartepoortbeesdam, bygewoon het. Die Tzaneense afrigters het by die voormalige breier van Gauteng se Goue Leeus, Swys de Bruin, gaan kers opsteek.

Greyling Harmse, die rugbyorganiseerder van die Laerskool Tzaneen, het gesê dit was ‘n baie groot voorreg om ‘n dag saam met so ‘n bekwame en ervare afrigter deur te kon bring.

Die stemmery vir die Top 10-spelers het reeds Vrydag die 2de Oktober begin en die afsnytyd vir hierdie titel sal Sondag die 11de Oktober geskied. Die top drie sal dan deur ‘n paneel beoordeel word vanwaar die wenner aangewys sal word.

Menige rugbykenner sal weet dat Nieu-Seeland byvoorbeeld die broeikas is vir die wêreld se voorste vleuels. Wallis is weer die land waarna verwys word wat van die beste losskakels opgelewer het.

Maar as dit by gedugte flanke kom, is Suid-Afrika seersekerlik die land wat van die wêreld se beste flanke oplewer. Daar is geen twyfel dat Du Plessis nog diep spore in Suid-Afrikaanse rugby gaan trap.

Hy is die enigste speler vanuit Limpopo vir die 2020 Ruggas. co.za nominasies. Die Hoërskool Ben Vorster en ondersteuners

van rugby in Limpopo wil mense aanmoedig om vir du Plessis te stem voor die spertyd Sondag die 11de Oktober aanbreek.

Du Plessis het ondermeer vir die Suid-Afrikaanse A-Skolespan uitgedraf in 2019. Hy het ook toe reeds vir die o/18 Blitzbokke sewesspan gespeel. Bulletin het vroeër vanjaar met du Plessis gesels gedurende die hoër vlakke van die Covid-19 inperkingstyd. Dit was gedurende dié tyd toe hy ‘n kontrak met die Cell C Sharks gesluit het om volgende jaar sy rugbyloopbaan (en studies) in Durban voort te sit.

Die spelers wie teen du Plessis in die nominasies vir die Ruggas.co.za Top 10 Speler van die Jaar-titel meeding is: Rynard Mouton (Monnas), Hardus Rothman (Garsfontein), Reinhardt Ludwig (Affies), Sisonke Vumazonke (Grey College), Ruaan Delport (Garsfontein), Sascha Mngomezulu (Bishops),Curwin Gertse (Paarl Gimnasium), Rowan Cloete (Garsfontein) en Ethan James (Paarl Gimnasium).

Du Plessis was verder ook genomineer vir die Ruggas. co.za titels om die Waardevolste Speler van die Jaar en die Voorspeler van die Jaar.

Die eerstespanne wat teen Ben Vorster meeding om dié kroon is Afrikaans Hoër Seunsskool (Affies), Bishops, Hoërskool Garsfontein, Grey College, Hoërskool Outeniqua en Paarl Gimnasium.

Die laaste keer (Woensdag 7 Oktober) toe Bulletin na die wedloop om die Eerste Span van die Jaar gekyk het, het Ben Vorster se 15-tal die botoon gevoer met die meeste aantal stemme van 200 wat ‘n persentasie van 34% weerspieël. Die Vossies geniet tans ‘n gerieflike voorspong. Die spanne van Grey College en Affies spook tans om die tweedeplek met 95 stemme (16%).

Merisca Steenkamp

Merisca Steenkamp het met volhoudenheid en deursettingsvermoë haar plek in die Limpopo Baobabs netbalspan bespreek. Sy is tans ‘n onderwyserstudent wie in 2018 begin studeer het en tans haar praktiese gedeelte by die Laerskool Duiwelskloof aflê.

Die Limpopo Baobabs vertrek reeds vandag (Vrydag die 9de Oktober) na Bloemfontein vir die jaarlikse Telkom Netbal Liga (TNL). Die deelnemende provinsiale spanne gaan eers ‘n paar opwarmingswedstryde speel.

Die 2020 weergawe van die TNLtoernooi, soos geloods en amptelik aangekondig deur Netbal SuidAfrika, begin egter in alle erns vanaf die 14de Oktober in die Mangaung Binnenshuise Sportkompleks en sal op die 27ste Oktober eindig.

Steenkamp is baie opwonde maar tog ‘n bietjie senuweeagtig oor die toernooi wat voorlê, en om die Limpopo Baobabs te verteenwoordig. Sy het in 2015 by die Hoërskool Merensky gematrikuleer (op laerskool was sy by die einste Laerskool Duiwelskloof ) en het na skool haar vir

eers slegs op ringbal toegespits. Dis vanjaar die eerste keer sedertdien skooldae wat sy weer begin netbal speel het.

“Dit is die eerste keer in ‘n lang tyd sedert skool dat ek weer besluit het om netbal te begin speel. Omrede die Duiwelskloof, Tzaneen omgewing my tuiste is en ek geen planne het om Limpopo te verlaat nie en ek graag hier gevestig wil wees, was dit nogal ‘n gedoente om ‘n geskikte netbalklub te vind”, het Steenkamp gesê.

“Alhoewel ek lid van Tzaneen Ringbalklub is, lê my werklike liefde by netbal sedert kindsbeen. Ek en my tweelingsuster, Mellisa, het sedert laerskool tot ons gematrikuleer het saam netbal gespeel.”

Omrede daar geen gevestigde netbalklub in Tzaneen is nie, was Steenkamp genoodsaak om buite dié dorp se grense te kyk vir alternatiewe geleenthede. Dis hoe sy die gemeenskap van die Nkowankowa City Ramblers ontmoet het.

Elke middag na skool, voor en na die Covid-19 se inperkingstye wat na maande se gedrentel verslap is, het Steenkamp tussen Mojadjiskloof en Nkowankowa gependel net om oefeninge by te woon. Steenkamp was egter vasbeslote om hoër hoogtes in netbal behaal en dié daaglikse roete heen en weer het as te ware ‘n roetine geword.

“Ek het geskakel om navraag te doen hoe ek betrokke kan raak as speler, en ek was aangenaam verras ten opsigte hoe verwelkomend Nkowankowa City Ramblers Netbalklub my laat voel het”.

Steenkamp is ook die Sepedi-taal magtig wat sy as kind op die plaas in die Politsi-omgewing aangeleer het. Dit was natuurlik ‘n groot aanwins om met haar klubspanmaats te

kommunikeer.

Om in aanmerking te kom vir die Limpopo Baobabs, moet ‘n speler ‘n lid wees van ‘n geaffilieerde netbalklub. Die feit dat sy lidmaatskap kon werf by Nkowankowa City Ramblers, het gehelp om vir haar die baan te weg na ‘n moontlike plek in Limpopo se provinsiale span. Wat sy dan natuurlik met lof behaal het.

Steenkamp en haar tweelingsusuter het as vyfjarige kinders in hul ma, Joanne, se kwekery ‘n netbalbaan afgemerk. Op die manier het die twee sussies saam met van die plaaswerkers se kinders netbal begin speel. So is die passie dan ook vir netbal by die tweeling gekweek, nogal so ewe in ‘n blommekwekery.

“Ek is versot op onderwys, en is baie lief vir kinders en ek het baie geduld met die jongspan. Ek kan my nie indink in ‘n ander beroep nie, dis my roeping om ‘n onderwyser te wees”.

Die TNL-toernooi was volgens Netbal SA aanvanklik vir Mei beplan om plaas te vind, maar weens die Covid-19 pandemie wat die wêreld tot stillstand geruk het, was die toernooi tot nou toe uitgestel.

Die toernooi sou oorspronklik oor ‘n tydperk van ses weke in drie verskillende provinsies beslis word. Weens die regulasies op reisbeperkinge was daar egter besluit om dit na twee weke toe te verkort en by een spesifieke sportterein aan te bied.

Netbal SA het ook verder bekend gemaak dat al die spanne in ‘n biologiese veilige omgewing gehuisves gaan word om die moontlik verspreiding van die virus te voorkom. Van die wedstryd sal op DSTV se SuperSport kanale gebeeldsend word.
