“SPEEDY” RESPONSE AFTER 120 DAYS

Limpopo Premier, Stan Mathabatha announced with great ceremony two days ago that his office along with CoGHSTA will come to the rescue of the destitute who have been left to suffer through the Covid-19 pandemic by launching a “multi-million” Human Settlements project today (Friday the 31st of July). According to the statement, the Limpopo government will rush to the aid of their citizens (voters) a mere 120 days after the start of the Lockdown. Read on page 5.

■ Billy Sibuyi While the Coronavirus pandemic might have aggravated the BaPhalaborwa Municipality (BPM) communities’ water crisis, the biggest problem is the municipality’s neglecting of its duties to insure regular maintenance and upgrading of its water infrastructure. This is according to residents who have had to struggle with water issues for years and have had their complaints go unanswered for just as long. A Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward Councilor, Sybrandt de Beer, noted that the municipality was still using the same water infrastructure installed 50 years ago. The aged infrastructure has started collapsing and this caused the deep-seeded problems to be exposed. In a conversation with Bulletin, De Beer stated that it was not just his ward, Ward 11, that was experiencing water issues, but other wards were also constantly facing the same issues. He added that nothing is done despite numerous and consistent complaints by the residents.

Over the past week, and for a period of no less than three days, residents in different sections of Phalaborwa were either left without any water or very little pressure that could not even flush a toilet. One of the primary schools, Phalaborwa-North (Red School) had to close their doors not because of a positive Covid-case, but because they had no water pressure.

In what has been described as a most confusing situation, the BPM just recently announced the addition

of 50 general workers to their workforce. Despite this however, they are still only operating at 50% capacity which means that only eight technicians are tasked with dealing with water shortages throughout the entire municipality which includes not only Phalaborwa, but Namakgale and Lulekani and surrounding areas.

Because of the municipality’s reluctance to cater to the needs of its residents, inhabitants living in Molengraaf and Frans du Toit Streets were catapulted back to the start of the century where they were forced to scramble for water from a burst waterpipe. Had they not rushed to fill up buckets at the burst pipe, they would have had no water in their households.

For four days the team of about eight employees battled with the burst pipe which kept erupting at a different place, four different times, along less than 100 meters.

Residents of Bosvlier and Houtbos Streets were without water and electricity for more than 24 hours after an excavator driver tasked with unearthing the burst waterpipe, even after being told where the electricital cables were buried, pushed the excavator bucket through those cables causing a massive power outage to accompany the municipality-induced drought.

Service delivery in the BaPhalaborwa municipality has become an epidemic of failures with residents still stuck with reference numbers of reported issues that still have not been attended to. In fact, service delivery has always been a

A Lulekani resident was arrested for assaulting an on-duty police officer after the officer confiscated his alcohol. Police reported that Zacharia Mathe -bula (32) was arrested for contravention of the lockdown regulations when he was caught drinking alcohol in public on Saturday, the 25th of July.

broken water pipes across Phalaborwa as they were working with only a limited number of workers. He also admitted that the infrastructure was aged but said that they had reported the matter to the Mopani District Municipality.

The Mopani District Municipality Spokesperson, Odas Ngobeni, told Bulletin that there was a proposal by the district municipality to take over the billing from the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality, which would mean that they would take over the maintenance of the infrastructure as well.

“It is a matter that council will soon debate on and decide. Currently, we are not collecting anything from Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality. Until we take over that responsibility, we are not able to get any funding for maintenance of that infrastructure,” Ngobeni told Bulletin.

Regarding the so-called “call” for residents to lodge their complaints with the municipality, ward councilor De Beer said that he had reported the water issues during the Executive Committee meeting and put it on record that the Customer Care register was not updated daily. “According to the register I have reported 11 issues, when in reality I have thus far repor -ted 78 issues. I have proof of all of this as I have been phoning a man by the name of David at the municipality and sent him emails so that I have proof of my efforts.”

We will stay on top of this deve -loping issue and report back to our readers if and when new information arises. We have also sent an inquiry to the Mopani District Municipality to find out the reasons for the taking over of the BPM maintenance and accounting departments.

problem in this municipality. It has in the past caused all the residents to come together and march to the municipal offices to demand service delivery and water. Promises were made by then mayor, Pule Shayi after his own daughter wrote a letter to her father begging for water at her school. Nothing has come of those promises and the residents are left to watch what was once the jewel of the North, turn into a rundown uninhabitable bush village. A house in Nollie Bosman Street first had to suffer flood damage before a water leakage was attended to. The main pipeline on the R71 that supplies water to the Kruger National Park has also been gushing out squeaky-clean water for more than a month.

Water projects have been left unattended and barricaded in the middle of the road across town for many weeks and residents have had enough of it. Not only is the muni -cipality’s failure to attend to these problems wasting water, but it is also creating more potholes, which is another area the BPM have failed dismally in. Most of the delays are attributed to a supply chain waiting for replacement parts for the damaged pipes or just a new waterpipe altogether. Affected streets include Aalwyn Street, Grosvernor, Prinsloo, Nollie Bosman and Gelderland streets.

Jonas Mahesu, the spokesperson for the municipality found the time to respond to an inquiry on the issue. “We are encouraging people to report the cases to customer care instead of posting their situations on social media, that way we will be able to attend to it,” he stated. Mahesu also acknowledged that the BPM was “facing challenges” regarding the

released, to demand that his alcohol be returned to him. Unfortunately for him, the alcohol had allegedly already been booked into the evidence register.

Mathebula became agitated and started swearing at the police officer before assaulting him. The suspect was re-arrested immediately and charged with assault. He appeared in the Lulekani Magistrate’s court on Monday, the 27th of July and was remanded to appear again on Thursday, the 6th of August, after he paid bail of R1 500 pending further police investigation.

Wat dit nog erger maak is dat die vrugte nie ryp is ten tye van die diefstal nie, en dat hierdie vrugte deur die misdadigers gepluk, gewas en verpak word voor dit op die varsproduktemark verkoop word.

Bulletin het in die verlede reeds ‘n paar keer daaroor en berig dat motoriste nie langs die pad moet stop en vrugte koop nie aangesien meeste van die vrugte en veral die lemoene en avokado’s heel waar-

skynlik gesteelde produkte is. Die polisie blyk nie of hul te veel bekommerd te wees oor hierdie diefstal wat die area reeds jare-lank teister nie, en fokus skynbaar eerder op die onwettige sigaret-handel wat die laaste twee maande begin kop uitsteek het.

Ons het navrae by die plaaslike- sowel as die provinsiale polisiewoordvoerders ingedien. Volgens die provinsiale woordvoerder, Brig Matlafela Mojapelo, is die verdagte, Sydney Selowa (30) steeds in aanhouding in die selle in Tzaneen nadat sy saak Maandag in Tzaneen uitgestel is vir verdere ondersoek.

Dit ten spyte daarvan dat die voertuig vermoedelik in die uitvoer van ‘n misdaad betrokke was.

Gaza Strip (finally) receives a scrubbing ■ Joe Dreyer The Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) erected user-friendly kiosks for the hundreds of street hawkers who do business in the CBD in 2013. The most concentrated of these “kiosk neighbourhoods” is situated behind Boxer opposite the bus terminal at Tzaneng Mall, and inside the Claude Wheatley taxi rank.

Over the years many of these kiosks gradually evolved from hawker trading stalls to gathering places for the vagrant community who use some of the kiosks as accommodation.

Others use them for storage. It is also known that drug dealers frequent the tiny passageways between these kiosks as they provide cover from watchful eyes.

This week the GTM decided to clean up the area surrounding the kiosks behind Boxer opposite the bus terminal. It is noticeably clear that despite the municipality’s insistence, cleaning does not occur regularly at this spot. The clean up was only initiated after a concerned citizen posted a photo of the dastardly situation over Facebook and demanded action from the GTM. An hour later we received images from the spokesperson of the GTM, Neville Ndlala, and a statement that “we have cleaned the area”. There was no further communication on our inquiries into the frequency of the clean up or the reason why these kiosks are still in use. We also have not received clarity on plans for the kiosks in future, or how the municipality intends to rectify the environmental disaster the area has become. There is also no indication that any parts of this area were disinfected.

During the start of the lockdown this reporter documented the state of the area through a live video stream over Facebook. In the video the amount of motor oil being spilled into the stormwater drain can clearly be seen. The area is inhabited by street mechanics and what used to be a parking lot, now resembles a bombing strip in Gaza.

While it is good news that the area has finally been cleaned by the EPWP crews, we are left wondering how long it is going to

last and how regularly the clean up will be initiated. The state of the neglect in this area is concerning and tarnishes the positive reputation of the municipal manager who has to date been held in high esteem by the community.

Hundreds of kilograms worth of rubbish filled up the walkways between the kiosks.

Shortly after a Facebook post by a concerned citizen the GTM miraculously sprang into action.

The Mopani South-East TVET College campus in Phalaborwa was temporarily closed after a staff member and a student tested Covid-19 positive on separate days this last week. Staff and students received a notification from management informing them that they would have to vacate the premises until Thursday, 30th of July for the second case, after a student tested positive on Monday, the 27th of July.

“Please be informed that a student tested positive for COVID-19. The student attended class last week. The management received the report today, 27 July 2020,” said AP Van Niekerk in an internal memorandum seen by Bulletin.

“Students are requested to vacate the campus.

Induction for the Level 2 students will be done on Thursday 30 July. Classes will commence on Monday,” the statement read. However, for the first case which occurred last week, on the 23rd of July, students were allegedly unaware that a staff member had tested positive even though the college stated on record that it had informed its students about the case.

The accounting officer, Levy Baloyi, who was more interested in how Bulletin obtained his contact details, despite him being the college principal, dragged our enquiries into this matter from pillar to post. We were directed to individuals within the institution who were not allowed to respond to the media without Baloyi’s approval.

He had directed Bulletin to the deputy principal whom he said would be the best person to speak to. We contacted the deputy principal who then told us that we were to communicate with the spokesperson, who in turn told us that she could not speak to us before her superiors, both the deputy and the principal, sign off on our enquiry.

Eventually we managed a discussion with the spokesperson, Given Sebashe, who said that the campus had informed all their stakeholders about the first positive case and encouraged them to take precautionary measures. “What we know is that the employee had an encounter with a family member and became infected. Following the positive result, the employee entered self-isolation,” said Sebashe.

Three weeks ago Bulletin broke the news of the SANParks staff members living in the tourist accommodation units inside the Kruger National Park. We published accompanying photographs.

Our revelation and subsequent inquiries to the SANParks communications officers were met with some disdain and we were initially accused of bias reporting.

The following week however, the LNP Head of Communications and the acting head of communications for SANParks Rey Thakuli admitted that staff members were indeed being housed in the tourist accommodation facilities during the Covid-19 pandemic, not only in the KNP, but in several other national parks.

This week, Bulletin again obtained information from sources who are being housed within these camps, the KNP had attempted to relocate the staff members back to their staff quarters, but they refused. The staff members demanded at least a month’s notice before they evacuate the tourist facilities and head back to their humble staff quarters. This credible source further revealed that they had a meeting with SANParks employees on Wednesday, 22nd of July to try and negotiate a phased return to their living quarters where they would again share ablution facilities with other employees, but under the strict standards of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Kruger National Park Head of Communication, Ike Phaahla, confirmed this and stated that they

had “updated colleagues on the progress to make [the] living quarters compliant and introduce a phased return.”

“Remember there are units that are open to accommodate guests. The number of employees in the rest camps are limited to essential staff.

Once overnight accommodation is allowed, we are ready to receive guests,” Phaahla told Bulletin when asked if the park, since staffers reside inside the camps, was ready to accept overnight guests.

He also mentioned that the employees will be phased out from the 1st of August and that some units in the compound were ready to be occupied.

We asked Phaahla about the procedure to ensure WHO compliance. According to WHO’s guidelines for healthy housing, a communal or shared toilet is often extremely insanitary and provides a route for cross-infection of enteric diseases. Moreover, every dwelling unit according to WHO should be provided with its own separate inside sanitary accommodation.

However, this may not be possible in housing shared by more than one person such as in the case of some of the KNP’s employees and according to WHO in these cases, special care has to be taken that sanitary arrangements are adequate and regularly cleaned to reduce the risk of spreading infection.

Phaahla stated that the plan was to employ more cleaners, and that they are following the WHO compliance regulations to the tee.

120 Days to respond to the poor ■ Joe Dreyer Although there are no elections awaiting the punch-drunk South African voting pool, the ANC in Limpopo seem to be using the nationwide Lockdown as an avenue to regain the trust of their fast-diminishing support. Startlingly, the premier of the province, Stan Mathabatha decided this week that, after more than 120 days in Lockdown, the lack of adequate shelter for the many homeless in specifically the Mopani District, is cause for major concern.

So “major” is his concern for the destitute that his government will only today (Friday 31st of July) launch what his spokesperson has termed “a multi-million Human Settlements Project” starting at the infamously poor Talana community residence in Tzaneen.

In a statement on Wednesday (sent to media houses only two days before the event because the Limpopo government prides itself on proper planning) Kenny Mathivha, spokesperson for the office of the premier, stated that the lack of proper shelter poses a serious health risk to the destitute households across the Province during this time of the global coronavirus pandemic.

“The Premier of the Limpopo Province, Mr Chupu Stanley Mathabatha, accompanied by the MEC for CoGHSTA, Mr Basikopo Makamu will on Friday, 31st of July launch 40 brand new low-cost housing units at Talana Community Residence (A multi-million Human Settlements Project), Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality in the Mopani District,” the statement read. “In an effort to purge the speedy spread of the virus in the area, government prompted with speed by providing shelter to the needy and destitute families.”

Strangely the Talana Hostel (or the new politically correct name – Community Residence) falls under Ward 15 of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. Ward 15 is one of only two wards controlled by the DA and overseen by councilor Tienie Prinsloo. The other

ward is Ward 14, overseen by councilor Pierre Cronje. Ward 14 is also incidentally where the district municipality decided to plant the temporary homeless shelter (Jetty 3). The shelter was established without consultation with the DA on the matter and despite the ANC wards containing many more suitable sites to house homeless and vulnerable people.

The decision to house the vulnerable homeless of the Tzaneen and surrounding areas which included people from Nkowankowa, next to a large body of water such as the Tzaneen dam in the middle of winter, in tents, in amongst the residential areas, was met with an outcry from not only the opposition but the homeowners in that area. It was labelled as a power move by the ANC. At the time of going to print we had not received any further clarification from the spokesperson for CoGHSTA, Motupa Selomo. We asked him telephonically why the Premier waited 120 days before tending to the plight of the homeless.

We wanted to know how he could justify this 120-day delay with a statement that seemed to indicate a great urgency.

The spokesperson refused to answer the questions over the phone and instead requested that the questions be forwarded to Mathabatha’s office in order for him to prepare a response.

We were also told that we could ask our questions at the press briefing Premier Stanley Mathabatha at Talana.

■ Billy Sibuyi Communities throughout the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality accused municipal officials and councilors of corruption in the distribution of food parcels meant for the poor communities. The municipality’s mayor, Merriam Malatjie, and her entourage mainly compromising of the Municipal Manager, Maite Moakamela, and the Chief Whip, Didodo Rapatsa, are at the center of the debacle mostly because these officials are seen by the community at large to be posing in all the photos of received food donations.

Accusations by some community members include allegations that the food parcels received by the municipality and intended for distribution through its food bank initiative, is only handed to family members or the hands down the political supply line.

This was however (and expectedly) disputed by the spokesperson of the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Jonas Mahesu. He placed it on record that ward councilors were not physically distributing any food parcels, but that their involvement was limited to only the facilitation of the distribution process.

On Thursday, the 23rd of July, the municipality received a hundred more food parcels. This time from Transnet Phalaborwa Branch, who have vowed to donate 300 parcels in the course of the next three months. This according to Transnet acting operations manager, Pamela Ncuru, was done as part of celebrating ‘Mandela Month’.

During the handover there was once again the obligatory photo session with the municipal high rankers expressing their gratitude and thanking the donours for their support.

Some members of the community believed that the idea of poor

people receiving these parcels was far-fetched and made mention in Facebook discussions that they would love to see which families receive these parcels. However, according to the Municipality they will not publicize the beneficiaries of the food parcels.

Malatjie, the mayor, reiterated that no food parcels were taken and distributed for political gain by her municipality. “We have only seen on TV that people do not get food parcels intended for them, and here in Phalaborwa we have not had that case. We have a list of people that were identified for food parcels and we use that list in distributing.”

The Mayor also mentioned that the challenges faced by the municipality were that some people were afraid to answer private number calls coming from the municipality and that means the municipality would proceed to the next person on the list. She also stated that she was aware that there was a massive backlog in terms of people who have not received the food but has asked the community to remain patient as their names were on the list and they will be considered.

It is not quite clear how many people are on the municipality’s list, but they mayor stated that it could be in the region of 6 000. According to statistics Bulletin received from the municipality, 1 172 people have so far benefited from the food bank. **Editor’s note: We are expected to believe a few statements as fact.

First that not being physically involved in a task exempts one from any responsibility related to said task, secondly that the municipality reserves the right to hide information which should by all accounts be public knowledge. We are also curious as to the secrecy of the socalled list of beneficiaries and why the municipality would use private numbers when contacting beneficiaries.

Strange lights were again spotted near Gravelotte on Sunday evening. According to two eyewitnesses, Mark and Lenore Kasdorf from Hazyview, they were traveling along the R71 from Hazyview towards Tzaneen when they noticed a very bright light approaching them from a distance ahead.

“We were driving to Gauteng and it was already around 19:30 and so everyone had their headlights on. A pet peeve of mine is when truckers leave their ‘brights’ on even in oncoming traffic. So, I flashed my lights at what I thought was an approaching truck,” explained Mark. “The lights just kept coming though and I said to Lenni she should brace herself because I think we might have to go off-road.”

Lenore remembered pushing her heels into the floormat as the light sped straight toward their vehicle and then suddenly vanished. “It was the weirdest feeling! One moment I was making peace with the imminent impact and the next it was completely calm. I remember thinking that the lights went right through our car and so I looked back to see where the vehicle went. But there was no vehicle and no sound or lights. Like we had both imagined it.”

In shock, Mark turned into Gravelotte and pulled into the Mackaukau filling station. “I jumped out the car and ran to the top the road at the intersection as I was certain the truck must have left the road after swerving to avoid a collision. Especially at that speed. But there was nothing. No dust, no lights, no commotion, nothing. Just dead quiet.”

The couple returned to their vehicle after washing up and replenishing their snack supply. Heading back onto the R71 they spent the rest of their trip discussing what they had just witnessed. “Maybe it was a vivid dream, or maybe there really was an accident on that road on Sunday evening? We thought it would make a good news story. Perhaps you could investigate it?”

Bulletin has checked with local traffic and police and no accidents were reported on that specific stretch of road in the last year. Two years ago we reported on the strange sighting of the Gravelotte White Foot by a young couple driving to Phalaborwa. Could these be linked somehow? Granny’s Grumbles - PLANTS

As most of my friends are aware I am a lover of the great outdoors and especially plants. I left a beautiful garden in Rhodesia and landed up in a

mobile home in Phalaborwa which was going to need a lot of work on the surrounds before I was going to consider it home. Since we had arrived with no money and any money we did get from the army was obviously going to be needed for far more important things than plants I kept my eyes open for anything that could be snipped or furtively removed from anything resembling a garden. A friend indicted that she had seen a load of plants out on a sidewalk in the residential area on her way home from town and she would show me the place.

Heaps of agapanthus bulbs lay strewn around and the owner had obviously had a pruning session on all her crotons. Since I had never set eyes on a croton prior to arriving in Phalaborwa I was very taken by them and actually considered a sneaky theft that very evening. My husband was appalled, especially since I was about to take the two eldest boys to assist. “We’ll be deported before we’ve even got citizenship”.

He eventually convinced me to visit the homeowner the next day and ask if the sidewalk plants were for sale, a gift for a friend or for removal by some garden refuse removal company. I arrived at said homestead the following morning only to discover that the lady was not able to speak English. I tried my best charades-type sign language and she actually appeared to become alarmed because she shot

over to her telephone and obviously discussed my presence with her next-door-neighbour who arrived a few minutes later. The neighbour could speak English and wanted to know where I had come from. I explained that I was living in the mobile homes and merely wanted to make a garden and wondered if I might have a couple of the plants from the sidewalk. This was interpreted to Betty (the homeowner) who immediately smiled and said I could take the lot. She had evidently thought that my sign language indicated that I was complaining about her garden refuse spoiling the street.

Betty and I became good friends and between her and another local lady I was able to get a very nice garden going within a couple of months. I also made friends with the Foskor horticulturist who allowed me free access to his gardening books. At the end of a year I was actually selling plants and learning about Lowveld conditions. I had been spending hours combing the bush around the town and finding interesting plants one of which I could not find in any of the gardening books so I decided to name it myself – just a common name – nothing fancy or botanical. Due to the unusual marking on the leaves I decided to call it a turtle ear – my horticulturist friend was extremely annoyed – did I realise that years from now women would be asking their local nurserymen for a turtle ear and nobody would have the faintest idea what they were talking about. To be honest I thought he was overreacting but this conversation was

brought home rather forcibly some years later when I was running a nursery. I was regularly asked to order water fuchsias – the only fuchsias I had knowledge of were normal fuchsias which do not enjoy Phalaborwa. I discovered eventually that the customers were referring to Impatiens – commonly known as Busy Lizzies. Where the name Water Fuchsias arrived from neither I nor any other nurseryman appears to know. I have been through numerous gardening books and consulted Mr Google but to no avail. An elderly lady wanted a Jakaalskos and was quite irritated when nobody could help her as according to her – they were in everybody’s garden.

Another odd thing – at least as far as I am concerned … is that certain plants repel snakes ... garlic lilies and geraniums being the heroes in this respect, but don’t buy daisy bushes or cannas as they evidently attract snakes.

There are also plants that that repel mosquitoes – or so they say!! The nursery business is full of myths and legends which have obviously assisted in the sale of specific plants.

On one occasion when I was not working at the nursery my husband had a very good sale – 28 geranium plants which was all the stock we had.

I was stunned – how did this happen? According to hubby – the customer had been told by her grandmother that they would repel snakes and who was he to argue with a grandmother’s pearls of wisdom.

If speaking kindly to plants makes them grow – imagine what speaking kindly to humans can do.

Chocolate comes from coco which is a tree, that makes it a plant, Therefore chocolate is salad.

Starting in early April 2020, carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations dropped by an estimated 17% due to the global Coronavirus lockdowns. This is according to Rion Lerm, a scientist and conservationist who is currently completing his PhD on Birds of the Kruger National Park.

Bulletin spoke to Lerm about the impact of the lockdown on surrounding fauna and flora and by most accounts it would appear that humans staying indoors has proved most beneficial.

According to him, CO2 is currently damaging the planet’s atmosphere because since the pre-industrial era (before the year 1750), CO2 has doubled. He explained that this meant that plants could not convert all the excess CO2 into carbon as they managed before the rise of the industries.

“We thus end up with a greenhouse gas

that is believed to cause global warming.

We know from school that CO2 is exhaled by people and animals and in turn, plants absorb it to produce oxygen that we again breathe in.”

“You also find CO2 in your soda in the form of bubbles when pouring or opening the bottle to have a cool beverage.

But do not worry, by drinking soda you are not causing climate change. To combat high atmospheric concentrations of CO2, governments around the world charge carbon tax to transportation, such as the car you drive,” Lerm explained.

He stated that although the best solution seemed to be renewable energy sources such as wind and solar ‘farms’, by merely walking to work instead of driving or using public transport would make a difference if enough people adopted the practice.

Renewable energies, he said, unfortunately do come with their own set of

environmental costs and are expensive technologies, but, at least currently, CO2 concentrations dropped by 17% due to global lockdowns. Lerm said that he believed the cause of this reduction could be explained by the restricted movement of people and vehicles and the minimized industrial activities.

“When lockdown eventually ends, the CO2 levels will return to normal once more. This information will not only be an eye opener to governments across the world, but should also make people think about the ways in which they move around and the future of the planet.” **Editor’s note: While Lerm does make some interesting observations, he failed to take into account the climate which does not allow for cycling or walking to work.

The climate includes the taxi industry who would have more than a few words to say to the idea of a predominantly pedestrian society.

Holgate Foundation reunited with Defender ■ Roelof de Jonge The most capable Land Rover ever made is now available in South Africa. After three years and more than 250 000km combined, the humanitarian adventurers Kingsley and Ross Holgate have retired the world’s most traveled Land Rover Discoveries and will now be utilising two new Land Rover Defenders.

Since the early 1990’s the father and son duo have used various Land Rover vehicles, including 15 previous generation Defenders, to deliver aid to those in need in every country on the African continent and beyond.

Land Rover’s off-road expertise has helped the Holgate Foundation conquer Africa’s most grueling

geographies in efforts to improve lives in some extremely hard to reach places.

The two new expedition vehicles are based on Defender P400 S models, which use 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines and efficient Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology to provide maximum outputs of 294kW and 550Nm. A Belt-Integrated Starter Generator (BiSG) harvests energy while driving and sends it to a 48V battery, which can be redeployed as torque for up to 142.5Nm under the load of acceleration.

The system also makes use of a 7kW electric supercharger, also powered by the 48V battery storage, to increase air pressure within the turbocharger in order to reduce turbo lag at engine speeds up to

The P400’s MHEV system helps to achieve an average fuel consumption as low as 9.9l per 100km, which will be especially valuable as the Holgates who often need to cover extremely long distances between refuelling stops while on expeditions.

As a rule of thumb, Kingsley and Ross like to have enough fuel within their convoys to cover at least 1 000km between stops. The efficiency offered by the Defender P400 will help to reduce the amount of externally stored petrol on journeys.

Land Rover South Africa’s technical team have created the two most capable expeditions vehicles ever available to the Holgate Foundation by adding on several Land Rover-approved accessories, which are all available to South African customers.

Expedition Leader Ross Holgate said: “The development phase of our new expedition vehicles was very exciting. We were like kids in a candy store, and it’s been fun being able to choose from a catalogue of vital parts offered directly from Land Rover.

“A sturdy roof rack is extremely valuable when it comes to hauling the extra gear we need for safe travel in some seriously inhospitable places. Spare wheels, fuel, food, sand ladders and even some of our humanitarian aid such as mosquito nets, water-purifying LifeStraws and much needed spectacles can all go up on the top.”

“A raised intake is ideal in dusty locations to ensure the engine breathes clean air, and even the black bonnet decal The new Defender’s interior. will be useful for reducing glare under the glaring African sun.

We’re still deciding what we’ll keep in the side gear carrier, but I’m sure we’ll find a handy use for it. Extra storage space is always welcome on expedition.”

Manufactured by Warn but available as an approved Land Rover accessory, a powerful winch is crucial in the environments the Holgates will cover on expeditions. This winch comes with wireless remote control that allows for safe operation away from the vehicle.

At the South African launch, the 110 line-up includes the flagship with the three-litre straight six-cylinder featuring the efficient Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle technology with outputs of 294kW and 550Nm. Alternatively, customers can choose between two 2.0-litre variants, with the P300 turbocharged petrol offering 221kW and 400Nm, and a D240 twin turbocharged diesel producing 177kW and 430Nm. A comprehensive model range is available, with four specification packs including the base Defender, S, SE and HSE models. Golf fraternity is still in Coronavirus-ICU ■ Roelof de Jonge

Golf clubs across South Africa were hit hard by the initial Lockdown regulations. When the announcement on the 12th of June was made by the national Department of Sport, Arts and Culture that clubs can start operating again with immediate effect, the players especially did not need a second invitation for a round of golf.

The clubs like Tzaneen Country Club however did not have any activities going since the lockdown was announced in March, which means casual workers and caddies felt the brunt of the lock down financially.

Although the golf fraternity welcomed the decision to lift the Lockdown regulations on the prohibiting of play, the rules set amongst others is that there are no events to be held yet in order to avoid social gatherings taking place.

To host golf competitions and tournaments throughout the year is one of the most important means by which the clubs generate an income. The popular Koraalboom tournament for 2020, amongst others, was one of the tournaments postponed or cancelled until next year, or at least until the complete reopening of the economy.

The caddies and casual workers depend on this income from tournaments. Although the workers and caddies can work again, without these regular events a viable source of income for these workers has certainly dried up.

According to GolfRSA, the operational savings from its 2020 National Squad budget paved the way for this organisation to add a further R500 000 to its #GolfRSAHelpFund, to aid caddies and casual workers that have been severely affected by the Covid-19 crisis.

In April, the organisation set aside R1 million from its savings on operational expenses and voluntary staff salary cuts to launch a programme that would identify and reach golf industry workers who were severely and negatively affected by the temporary closure of golf facilities.

With the full initial sum having been realised over the last six weeks, GolfRSA has explored other avenues for funding sources to sustain the project, including an online auction through Strauss & Co, a raffle site on iTickets SA, and savings from the National Squad budget.

“We are extremely proud to have been able to contribute to so many of the most vulnerable members of our golf industry and assist them in a small way,” explained GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn. “However, we recognise the urgency of continuing this programme as our caddies and casual workers continue to feel the effects of the lockdown.

“The Lockdown has unfortunately limited the opportunities available to our National Squad players, such as group training camps, tournaments and the annual UK Tour,” explained GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn.

“However, there is a silver lining in that we were able to find an extra R500 000 in the budget to put towards our Help Fund.”

Magoeba Trek postponed to 2021

In last week’s edition of the Bulletin, the 24th of July, it was broadly reported on the silent protest by the tourism, hospitality and restaurant sector and how the current and absurd Covid-19 lockdown regulations affect these industries.

National government and the powers that be should perhaps just for once adhere to the private sector on how to come up with effective ideas to help stimulate business growth without having to put people at risk of getting affected. Then one might salvage what is left of a very tattered tourist industry.

That is why the organisers and sponsors of the annual and popular three-day Magoeba Trek Mountain Bike (MTB) race came together and implemented an idea to host a mountain bike event, namely a Social Distance MTB challenge. Without having people crowding together and so preventing the further spread of the Covid-19 virus.

Since the 2020 version of the Magoeba Trek had to be cancelled, the organisers will be working on the 2021 race which will likely take place from the 20th until the 22nd of August.

To help save the tourism industry in the Magoebaskloof, Haenertsburg area, persons simply has to enter online, grab their gear along with the dreaded face mask (which will be compulsory along with a proper cycling helmet) and go ride those bicycles.

The sponsors and organizers of the Magoeba Trek came with a

brilliant idea to implement socially distanced challenges. The first of four challenges which started on the 25th of July, will require MTB riders to enter through various tags namely #magoebatrek, #magoebaskloofmtb, #savetourism, #supportlocal and #lovelimpopo.

By simply following these steps to enter and to complete the challenges, riders can join the MagoebaskloofMTB Club on the Strava website at https://www.strava.com/clubs/ magoebaskloof_mtb Alternatively riders can enter the challenge on the EntryNinja website at https://www.entryninja.com/ events/73502-xco-lockdown Until the end of September MTB riders can travel to Magoebaskloof and ride the XCO route as many times as they want to.

After completing the route, riders must ensure to upload their details of their ride onto Strava otherwise the times cannot be timed or ranked.

MTB riders are required to follow these rules when participating in the MagoebaskloofMTB Social Distance Challenge: • Keep at least 2 meters from any other cyclists on the route.

• Avoid gathering and physical contact on the route.

• Indicate to the person in front of you that you are going to pass and do so quickly without any physical contact.

• Remember to wear a face mask.

• No helmet, no participation.

• Do not take part if you are not feeling well, rather stay at home.

• Strictly no spectators allowed.

• After completion riders are advised to leave to avoid social gatherings.

• MTB riders can repeat the challenge as many times as they like to improve their time.
