The Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s annual budget for the 2019/2020 fiscal period was released earlier this month and by all accounts paints a melancholy outlook for the year ahead. It is proposed that property rates are to be increased by 5.6% which the municipality asserts is necessary in order to fund maintenance to the roads, storm water drainage systems, parks and cemeteries and sidewalks.

Last year (2018), for the six months between July and December, the GTM collected R357 287 million in revenue from debtors. This is still only 95% of the actual billed revenue (R376 027 million) which means that the GTM lost R18,7 million in income. The cause of this is speculative. It could be because of mismanagement or incompetence.

Despite this loss, the revenue generated should be used for the upkeep of the above mentioned infrastructure.

Yet, the appalling state of the roads in Tzaneen town, Haenertsburg, Lenyenye and Nkowankowa - which all fall 100% under the jurisdiction of the GTM – would strongly suggest that these funds were not adequately, if at all, applied as intended. In fact, one would be hard tasked to find a recreational park other than Mnitzani which still supports recreation.

An even more difficult of a task awaits he who would dare name a street without a pothole or a stretch of pavement without a hawker or some arbitrary piece of profane wisdom graffitied over the curb stones. A reality that is quite often vehemently justified by shifting the blame onto the citizens who “fail to report” these grievances to the municipality despite the municipality boasting a roads inspection team.

But the municipality has other systems of income in the form of various grants such as Equitable Shares. The equitable share is a financial allocation

in the form of an unconditional grant that enables (or rather should enable) municipalities to provide basic services to poor households, and to enable municipalities with limited own resources to afford basic administrative and governance capacity and perform core municipal functions. For the 2019/2020 fiscal period Tzaneen has been allocated R149 254 000 for Water and R112 129 000 for Sanitation.

There is also the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) which is a municipal infrastructure funding arrangement.

It combines all the existing capital grants for municipal infrastructure into a single consolidated grant. And as the name suggests, is money that is intended to be used for the upgrading and maintenance of infrastructure.

A total of R94,2 million from the MIG has been allocated towards 14 different upgrading projects around the GTM’s jurisdiction. It is rather disconcerting to note that none of these include Tzaneen town.

On the list of projects is “Lenyenye Taxi rank” at a cost of R 8 119 900. This project particularly is of interest because of the prolonged public outcry, and subsequent empty promises in response thereto by the GTM, to have something done about the taxi rank in Claude Wheatley Street. For years Tzaneen motorists have had to suffer the brunt of the self-righteous taxi drivers and the everlasting absence of the GTM Traffic law enforcement officials. Why is this site not on the list?

One is left wondering, when perusing the list of MIG-funded projects planned for the next three years, why none of these are planned for the area from which arguably the greatest portion of rates and taxes revenue for the municipality is generated.

Rubbervale crash claims two lives Nine more deaths

It was a bloody long weekend on the province’s roads as 32 people were killed in motor vehicle accidents in the region.

The majority of the accidents were reportedly head-on collisions which the Ministry of Transport have said is an indication of a culture of disobedience to the road traffic laws.

On Saturday morning 78 passengers of a bus that was heading to Phalaborwa from Ellisras were injured when the bus was involved in a head-on collision with a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The passengers were all students.

The accident happened at around 05:30 that morning. The bus belongs to

an Ellisras-based service, Lowveld Bus Services.

Upon arrival on the scene, emergency personnel discovered a third vehicle with two male occupants trapped underneath the overturned bus.

It was not clear at that stage whether the men were injured or deceased at this time as medical personnel were unable to reach them. It was later confirmed however that the men died on impact.

Local tow truck companies were allegedly unable to lift the bus off the wreckage of the bakkie as the owner of the bus allegedly refused to allow this. Instead the police and local tow companies were allegedly ordered to wait for a tow truck and crew to arrive from Ellisras.

Three hours later, at around 08:20, the local towing service, SONCO, was instructed to lift the bus and emergency services personnel were able to reach the deceased. Both men were from Phalaborwa and were identified as Frederick Burger (36) and his father-in-law Jan Snyman (66). It is reported that Burger had just recently moved to Phalaborwa and was traveling to Potgietersrus to collect his belongings.

A third vehicle was also involved in the accident, though details are unclear as to how. The occupants of this vehicle were injured in the incident and rushed to Mediclinic Tzaneen. The injured passengers from the bus were transported to local hospitals in the area.

24 Die in overloaded taxi crash ■

Twenty four people were killed when an overloaded Quantum taxi collided headon with a bus on Sunday evening. The accident happened on the R81 between Giyani and Mooketsi at around 22:00 that evening.

According to the provincial SAPS spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the bus was traveling in the direction of Mooketsi from Giyani and the Quantum was traveling to Giyani from Mooketsi. “The cause of the collision is the subject of ongoing police investigations and the process

of identifying all deceased is still underway,” Ngoepe said on Monday.

Bulletin obtained information from a source on the scene that there were only three people onboard the bus at the time, the driver, his wife and child. The three of them sustained minor injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment. One person, an occupant of the overloaded Quantum, survived the accident and was recovering in hospital at the time of going to print. It was not made clear whether this survivor was the driver of the taxi.

A Toyota Quantum bus which is most commonly used in the taxi industry is available in three different models which all seat between 11 and 14 passengers. This means that this particular vehicle involved in the accident was overloaded by more than 10 people. In essence it would mean that this one taxi bus was carrying two taxi-loads of passengers with their baggage.

On Monday afternoon the Deputy Minister of Transport, Dikeledi Magadzi accompanied the Limpopo MEC for Transport and Communi-

ty Safety, Namane Dickson Masemola, to the scene of the accident.

This was the second major accident on the same road in two days over this past long weekend which brought the total number of deaths to 30 people on the R81. The latest incident again highlights the need for stricter policing of the province’s roads by the traffic department to ensure that taxi drivers – who are notorious for their “above the law” culture – are prevented from risking the lives of their passengers through negligent and irresponsible behaviour.

On the 16th of June nine more lives were lost on Limpopo’s roads in motor vehicle accidents which seem to be due to drivers not adhering to the rules of the road. In the first incident a minibus taxi collided head-on with an LDV on Road D4100 between Setlaboswane and Mphane villages, in the Sekhukhune district. The alleged possible cause of this horrific accident is unsafe overtaking.

Three people were killed and 15 injured in this accident which could have been avoided had the rules of the road been adhered to.

In the second incident two vehicles, a BMW and a Mercedes, collided head-on whilst traveling in opposite directions along the R81 between Giyani and Polokwane.

Six people were killed in this crash.

Both the vehicles burst into flames with the occupants still inside the wreckages. One emergency services worker described the scene as “horrific and haunting”.

Dickson Masemola, the MEC for Transport and Community Safety called on road users to exercise patience and extra care on the road. “We take this opportunity to send words of condolences to the families of those who perished and to wish a speedy recovery to those who are receiving medical attention in the different hospitals.”

Masemola said.

He further warned in the strongest possible terms that road traffic infringers should know that the rule of law is sacrosanct and that adherence of provisions of the law is non-negotiable. “The province cannot continue to afford more losses of life, one loss of life is one too many.”

Brothers in arms Seeking Loki ■ Jeff Jackson

■ Jeff Jackson In what can only be described as a Hollywood-style storyline, seven security officers were arrested for murder and attempted murder. Four of them appeared in court on Tuesday on these charges and three were let loose as it was found that they were not linked to the incident.

This followed after this group of security guards received word that one of their colleagues was shot and killed by a suspect known to the group in the area. The group took the law into their own hands and without reporting the incident to the police, armed up and went to the suspect’s house in Mohodi Manthata village outside Mogwadi.

There, the officers located the suspect and an acquaintance, tied them up and started to interrogate them regarding the murder. During this interrogation they robbed the suspect of his firearm and shot him dead. His acquaintance fled the scene but was wounded by another shot.

The Police were summoned and started with the initial investigations and a manhunt ensued until all these suspects were arrested. During the arrest, four pistols and three rifles were confiscated from the officers. The deceased was identified as Masilu Mothemela (24) from that area.

Four of the seven arrested suspects in this matter have appeared in the Senwabarwana Magistrate Court outside Polokwane on charges of murder and attempted murder. They were all denied bail and their cases were postponed to the 21st of June 2019 for bail application and for further police investigations.

These arrested suspects were identified as Thabo Masilo (26) from KZN Province, Khetta Ngobese (45) from Bendor in Polokwane, Sthembiso Hlabisa (30) from Bendor in Polokwane and Isaac Malema (43) from Mohodi village. The other three suspects were not linked to the incident.

The police in Mutule outside Thohoyandou are hunting down a devious fraudster who is preying on unsuspecting pensioners and robbing them of their menial grants monies. The fraudster disguises herself as a social worker from the Department of Social Development.

The suspect, allegedly requested the victim’s bank cards, Identity document and Pin codes in assurance that she will deliver food parcels. Subsequently, she handed back the wrong bank card to the victim and disappeared without trace.

The preliminary Police investigations have revealed that the suspect withdrew money from the victim’s bank account and further used this bank card to buy liquor and groceries at different shops in and around the area.

The police have warned the members of the community not to fall prey to these types of fraudsters and to be especially aware of female con-artists who appear the least conniving.

“Members of the community are advised not to fall victims of this type of unscrupulous woman by not giving anybody a chance to access their personal items such as ID’s, bank cards and pin codes irrespective of the explanation given. If they suspect any person carrying out these acts, they must immediately notify the local police or the local relevant authorities for intervention,” said Col Moatshe Ngoepe, spokesperson for Limpopo SAPS.

He shot her down ■ Jeff Jackson A 33-year old man walked into the retail store where his 30-year old partner was employed and blatantly shot her dead in front of the patrons and other staff members. He then turned the gun on himself and was found dead in a pool of his own blood.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in one of the supermarkets at a shopping complex in Burgersfort.

The motive behind this killing was not clear at the time of going to print and witnesses say the suspect said not a word before executing his lover.

The SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner in Limpopo, Maj Gen Jan Scheepers, has condemned the continuous acts of domestic related attacks and killings that are prevalent in some areas of this Province.

The police have opened a case of murder and inquest for further investigations. The deceased were identified as Paulos Mokwana (33) and Valencia Mnisi (30), both from Manoke Village outside Burgersfort.

Bodies recovered from dams

■ Jeff Jackson The Rescue operations conducted by the South African Police Service Search and Rescue Team, the K9 Unit and the Air-wing were extremely successful across Limpopo in the past few months.

These operations are precipitated by the high rate of incidents of missing persons who constantly vanish in the mountains, rivers or in dense bushes.

Some are victims of drowning after swimming in dams and rivers in the area without adequate supervision. Others are caught by crocodiles while conducting illegal fishing activities in rivers and dams.

From the beginning of June to date, more than six rescue operations were conducted and four bodies retrieved from rivers and dams. These rescue operations were conducted in the Gravelotte, Waterval, Malipsdrift, Sekhukhune and Rakgoadi Policing areas.

In the Gravelotte Policing area outside Phalaborwa, a 29-year old Fondani Matsimbe was allegedly busy constructing a new crocodile dam when he accidentally slipped and fell into the dam. The

body of the deceased was later retrieved through diving as it was deep and the area of search was very broad.

At the Albasin Dam in the Waterval Policing area outside Makhado, the body of 35-year old Tinashe Ngwenya, was retrieved after he drowned. In the Seshego Policing area outside Polokwane, the body of a middle-aged man was retrieved from the sewage system near the local shopping mall.

Lastly, In the Rakgoadi Policing area outside Groblesdal, the body of 30-year old Peter Phahlamohlaka, was retrieved from the local dam after he drowned while illegally fishing with his friend at around 21:00 that evening. He allegedly entered the water with a small canoe, started fishing with a net and he never returned “Members of the community are advised and urged to take extra precautions whenever they are near the rivers especially, around those infested with crocodiles. Those who go swimming, should do so under the close supervision of a swimming expert, to prevent incidents of this nature to occur,” said Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

SAPS pay a visit to the youth

Lesotho national Follow-up: arrested in Lim Matric and father ■ Jeff Jackson

Prompt and swift reaction by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Tzaneen cluster, led to the arrest of a Lesotho national who was allegedly involved in the fatal shooting of a 41-year-old man.

According to the SAPS, the shooting occured on the 12th of June at the Zhangoma village in the area of Letsitele, outside Tzaneen.

The 30-year-old suspect was arrested in a sting joint operation conducted by the Tzaneen detectives, the Tzaneen cluster trio task team and members of the crime prevention unit.

The SAPS said it acted on a tip-off from the community and intercepted the suspect at a local taxi rank who was allegedly on the way to Gauteng. During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of a firearm, 11 rounds of ammunition, four cell phones and an undisclosed amount of cash which is believed to be some of the money stolen from the deceased.

Preliminary police investigations have revealed that the recovered firearm was reported missing by its owner in February this year in the Matsulu area in Mpumalanga. Further investigations will be conducted to determine whether the firearm was used in other crimes according to the SAPS. The arrest follows an incident where the deceased Frank Joe Moyo, who was suspected to be linked to illegal mining, arrived at a house in Zanghoma village to pay his illegal mining employees.

The deceased was outside the house talking to some of his employees when an unknown suspect entered the yard, shot him and fled on foot. The suspect fled with his cellphone and an undisclosed amount of money.

The deceased was certified dead on the scene. The motive for the killing is still unknown at this stage.

The suspect will appear before the Nkowankowa Magistrate Court on Tuesday the 18th of June where he will face charges of murder, robbery, possession of suspected stolen properties, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

A Grade 12 pupil from Mohlatlego Machaba High School in Ga-Motupa near Tzaneen, who was allegedly late for a Sepedi exam, ran over a group of fellow learners on Wednesday the 5th of June. The 18-year old grade 12 pupil apparently borrowed the vehicle from his father.

“This follows an incident that occurred on Tuesday the 4th of June at about 11:00. The grade 12 learner allegedly drove with his father’s bakkie when he lost control. The learner then crashed into nine fellow pupils outside the Mothlatlego Machaba High School in the Ga-Motupa village in the area of Bolobedu outside Tzaneen”, said Col Moatshe Ngoepe, spokesperson for the SAPS Limpopo.

Col Ngoepe said the pupils were taken to local hospitals in the area, but the 14-year-old Koketso Raholane died upon his arrival at the hospital. He said the others are still recuperating from serious injuries at their homes. The Col added that the 18-year-old learner was arrested alongside his father.

They appeared in the Bolobedu Magistrate Court outside Tzaneen and were both denied bail and their cases were postponed to the 21st of June for bail application and further police investigations.

Col Ngoepe saID the 18-year old learner faces charges of culpable homicide, driving an unroadworthy motor vehicle and driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license. His father, the owner of the vehicle, was facing a charge of permitting a person to drive a motor vehicle knowing that he does not have a valid driver’s license.

Crime stop: 10111

■ Jeff Jackson The South African Police Service in Limpopo in collaboration with the Office of the MEC of Transport and Community safety restored the lives of young people in the City of Polokwane after an Imbizo coupled with a prayer session which took place on Friday the 14th of June (ironically only two days before 24 young people would lose their lives in a horrific bus and taxi accident).

The Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Policing, Major General Jan Scheepers, welcomed and acknowledged all the dignitaries and the audience. In his message, the General outlined the reasons for this community engagement as to educate community and change the values, but to do so, we need God to pave ways. During his purpose rendering, he called for members of the community to assist the Police in claiming back the streets from the criminals, where children will be free from any harm again.

The Department of Correctional Services, shared words of support and encouragement with the youth through ambassadors, one of them, Pheladi Moholo who motivated the youth to respect their parents as she outlined her past behaviours that landed her in jail. Because of her criminal records, she remains unemployable up to now.

The Junior Provincial Commissioner, Ayanda Malapane, spoke about the school dropouts who are potential risks with lingering minds. She further encouraged them to participate effectively in the community based crime prevention initiatives being, the Community Police Forum, the sector

forums, the streets committees and the neighbourhood watch, including the Community Safety Forums to deal head on with all categories of crimes.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, clearly outlined the objective of having this event at Flora Park dam, in Polokwane, which he said, it is because the youth is on the wrong lane, to a point where many resolute to prison.

It is also an open secret that communities in the area and other areas around the Province are facing challenges of drug abuse, violence, bullying and criminal activities daily, more especially in the learning environments.

The Provincial Commissioner has appreciated a teamwork spirit which is prevailing between the MEC and the Saps in the Province in the fight against crime. He further said that, a purpose of life needs to be instilled into the youth because they are the future leaders. Parents should be responsible towards the safety of their children, particularly learners. Their school bags must always be searched unannounced. Young people were appealed to take full charge of their lives.

In his conclusion, the General said, as the Police in the Province, we have the responsibility to keep everyone safe and should there be any practice of unlawfulness, then, arrest will be effected immediately. Children must avoid any criminal engagement but receive high quality education. Parents must be committed and raise a real capacitance future. He called upon members of the community to provide an unconditional support to the Police in their endeavour to fight crime at all times.

Granny’s Grumbles - THE COLOUR ORANGE

My family is only too aware of my love for the colour orange. One Christmas when they were all examining their presents it was pointed out to me that every present that I had given was orange. Now I do not do this intentionally – I think I just am attracted to the colour and I really hadn’t noticed.

At some time during the seventies when our family had grown too big for our car a good friend told us of a widow who was moving to a retirement home and was selling a car that she had owned for years at a very good price. Off we went to see said car and sure enough it was a real bargain and had only ever been owned by her. Although fairly antiquated (which most Rhodesian cars were) it did not have much mile-

age on the clock so we were very happy with our acquisition. The Vauxhall was a rather subdued yellow colour – not very striking – just rather pale.

A few months later whilst my husband was in the bush I got a phone call from a very good friend of ours. He was the workshop manager at a large ice-cream factory and his job was to make sure that all the vehicles were kept bright and shiny which entailed the ice-cream carts being spray painted fairly regularly.

Since Dulux considered him one of their best customers he was offered enough free vehicle paint to spray paint his car.

Zane’s car was relatively new (by Rhodesian standards) and a very smart metallic grey so he had no use for unlimited litres of car paint but thought that I might like to brighten up our Vauxhall. Indeed I would – he said he had to let Dulux know fairly soon as they would be closing down for the Christmas holidays, so he would send the colour chart to me via their messenger during lunch hour. The colours were numbered so I just had to let him know what number I wanted The chart duly arrived – there were at least thirty colours to choose from but in the middle was the brightest orange I had ever seen – it was called “Rhodesian Marigold” and I knew that what I wanted. I phoned through the number – two minutes later Zane was on the phone – thought I’d made a mistake – did I know that it was bright orange? I assured him that I did.

An hour later he was on the phone again – the

Dulux rep had phoned to check – did anybody truly want a bright orange car – the only time the colour had been used was to paint some marigolds on a landscaper’s vehicle. Also what on earth would my spouse say?

I would take the blame for any really nasty come-back so told him not to worry – I had plenty of ammunition at my disposal. Zane picked up the car on Friday at lunch-time – the arrangement was that two of the factory spray-painters were going to do a private job for me on Saturday. On Monday morning Zane arrived at my place of work with my new-look vehicle. Virtually the entire company came to look at it and needless to say the men were very vocal in their comments “If you were my wife I would divorce you” and other such comments. Since my husband had swapped our lovely little Mini Cooper for a Studebaker a couple of years previously I figured he wouldn’t have much to say. When I got home that night even the children were stunned. My teenage boys thought it showed ill-advised bravery – my teenage daughter didn’t want to be seen it and only my six year old daughter thought it beautiful. Actually I realised that young children love very bright colours and all Cindy’s friends wished their parents had a car like that!!

Hubby was speechless for some time when he came home – the children waited for the third world war to erupt, but in vain. Wives have long memories and visions of the Studebaker debacle were probably still in his mind.

When we eventually sold it three years later we got nearly double what we paid for it which proved that I was not the only female in the country who loved “Rhodesian Marigold”

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit In some way most of us are afraid of the dark, some fear it so much that they cannot sleep without a light on. Often bad things happen in the hours of darkness and therefore, it is not unreasonable to fear the dark. Our sleep is often interrupted by sounds we do not recognise and we are suddenly awake and fearful.

There are various ways we can overcome this fear and ensure our safety. Darkness and night are supposed to be there for us to rest and to await the morning light. In today’s life, however, this may not be the case. Fear will always be with us.

Looking at our Christian life we are also, often, filled with fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of death. It all depends on our faith and our understanding of God’s promises to us. Jesus said: “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should stay in darkness” John 12 v 46 (NIV). We need to cling to this, because in believing in Christ we have the assurance that we are not alone and He will never leave us. When darkness overcomes us in no matter what form or the other we need to put our trust in God and His promises.

We all have skeletons in the cupboard some are more alarming than others and we need to bring them before the Lord in other words confess our sins and truly repent of them. All our bad feelings against one another need to be resolved we need to have another look at what caused these feelings and see how we could possibly change our outlook, were we in some way the cause of these bad feelings.

Many people leave the church because of the way they were treated in a specific congregation, so what could we as congregants do to turn into the church God wants us to be. We need to reach out to others, to truly welcome them and introduce ourselves to them. Many of us know perhaps their names, but do we actually know them even if they have been coming to church for many years, let alone the new comers. Some form of identification needs to be used- name tabs. We then too can become Jesus’ light in this world, by shine out His light in love for others.

Bloem to host Lim riders place in Top 10 Craven Week Wilisna Knox

■ Roelof de Jonge Bloemfontein is one of the coldest cities in South Africa come winter time. But with some exciting schools rugby heading to the City of Roses the participating teams could just drive the temperature up a notch.

This city plays host to this year’s U/18 Coca Cola Craven Week at Grey College from the 1st to the 6th of July.

■ Jeff Jackson The growing sport of Western Mounted Games was in the spotlight in an icy cold Parys this past weekend where four local riders participated in the South African Western Mounted Games Association’s Elite Event.

Several countries were very well represented and made some of the toughest competition most of the local riders would have faced in their aspiring careers. Those present included teams from England, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Following a gruelling day in the arena it was the South African National Boys team who walked victoriously to the stables as the overall winners.

In the individual competition, four riders represented Limpopo Province which comprised of Taylor Smith on Accolade Denver, from Polokwane, Melody Bond on King, Wilisna Knox on Joker Shanoo and Adriaan van Brakel on Sidarmi Saartjie from Tzaneen.

Wilisna Knox achieved a second place overall with her phenomenal horse Joker Shanoo. Adriaan van Brakel placed sixth overall with Sidarmi Saartjie and for the first time in the history of Western Mounted Games, Limpopo Province featured in the Top 10. This achievement bears testament to the growing popularity of the sport in this province and the talent derived from it.

Die Letaba Bosveld Jagters en Wildbewaringsvereniging (BJV) in samewerking met die BetElohim Bedienge het Saterdag die 15de Junie ‘n familiepretdag skietgeleentheid gehou.

Die skietdag het verskeie skuts van die BJV sowel as voornemende skuts gelok. Lede van die BJV soos Alwin Fleischmann en Johann Hoyer van die BetElohim Bedienge het ondermeer die minder ervare skuts touwys gemaak.

Her hands heal the body ■ Bulletin Her hands, laced with a chamomile and geranium lotion mix, glide smoothly but firmly over the human body, and then the loud “cr-a-a-ck” of a vertebra high up on the neck falling back into place. The relief on the client’s neck was instant.

This is the working of Glynnis Steyn (60) who treats clients at home at the Warriors homestead off the R71, at the frail care centre of Macadamia in Tzaneen and at the Tzaneen Care Group at 36 Maritz Street, Tzaneen.

At the beginning of the session Glynnis asked the client if she had pain anywhere. The reply was in the negative. That’s just because the 68-yearold client had learnt to live with her pain. Expert pressure was applied to all the small nodules that generated pain until the pain simply dissipated.

Glynnis’s hands went right up the head and she said, “I hope you don’t have to be seen in public after this because I’m going to mess up your hair.” Who cares when the head, after the treatment, felt a thousand years lighter and brighter.

Halfway through Glynnis asks you to flip on your back. She then works on your upper torso. “How do you man-

age to turn your head when you’re driving your car?” she asks in amazement. “With difficulty,” comes the reply. Those fingers then work tirelessly on loosening the neck muscles to regain some semblance of movement.

“Your shoulders are very stiff,” she says as she rotated the arms testing

the level of mobility. Glynnis worked gently on that shoulder until the pain subsided and some level of mobility returned.

Then her hands moved to the legs.

First the ice cold feet were warmed up due to the client’s bad circulation.

It felt as though she was scraping

the underside of each toe but whatever she was doing, a warmth and comfort returned to the feet. The client had had bone grafts on both knees as a teenager and the result is weakness and stiffness in the legs.

Glynnis’s hands hit those stiff areas, the calves, the thighs and the client was left with a mobility she hasn’t felt in years.

Leaving Glynnis’s home, the pair went up a long flight of stairs without a hand railing. Initially the client held onto Glynnis’s hand due to years of the fear of falling with those stiff legs. Glynnis and client were suitably impressed when the client skipped unaided up the last twenty or so steps.

Glynnis was born in Durban, spent many years in Johannesburg and has been living at Warriors for the last four years. She started studying for her current profession in 1992 with Reflexology and Aromatherapy courses. She’s never stopped learning to create wellness for her clients and now also includes the Pain Neutralising Technique, body talk and nutrition. The Pot & Plow outside Haenertsburg was inundated with guests for Father’s Day. Only two tables had been booked for the day and owner Gary Barnes was concerned about the possible lack of patronage. Fortunately there was a full complement of efficient staffers to handle the countless walk ins. From midday until late in the evening there were about a hundred guests at any given time that came to celebrate Father’s Day with their loved ones. Hats off to the staff who handled multiple food and drink requests with a smile and efficiency.

Rugbyspelers in die Bulletin Sevens uitslae wolke na segetog ■ Joe Dreyer

Die tweede rondte van die jaarlikse Bulletin Seven Sticks League hokkie liga is gedurende die tweede kwartaal van die skooljaar by Astro@ BenVorster se baan aangebied.

Alhoewel meeste spelers nie die wedstryde kon bywoon deur die loop van die toernooi nie, aangesien die meerderheid spelers voltyds werk, was die toernooi steeds ‘n oorweldigende sukses. Daar word nou reggemaak vir die derde rondte wat in die derde kwartaal sal begin.

Die eerste rondte wat aan die begin van die jaar gespeel is, is deur die span van Letaba Wire-

less oortuigend gewen toe hulle met die manne van die Bulletin Snipers en die Jackson Sevens in die halfeindrondtes afgereken het.

Hierdie tweede rondte is deur die Tzaneen Mans Hokkieklub gewen wat uit baie van dieselfde spelers bestaan wat die trofeë die eerste keer gelig het. Die Dames Liga is deur Just Furious gewen met die Carbon Fibers wat die Laerskool Liga trofeë gelig het.

Die toernooi word in sewe-aan-‘n-kant formaat gespeel en spanne wat inskryf betaal ‘n minimale fooi vir deelname. Spanne wat graag wil deelneem aan die volgende rondte kan gerus vir Elmarie Jansen op 072 767 7330 of Louis van Dyk op 071 880 0927 skakel.

■ Joe Dreyer Die 23ste jaarlikse Beweging vir Christelike Volkseie Onderwys-skole (BCVO) se Winterspele was vanjaar in Lichtenburg gehou.

Dié Winterspele was van die 13de tot die 15de Junie aangebied met vyf streke wat vir strawwe mededinging onder mekaar gesorg het.

Die Noord-Transvaal, Oos-Transvaal, Wes-Transvaal, Noord Kaap en Vrystaat asook Sentraal Trans-

vaal streke het vir die opwinding op die sportveld gesorg. Wolkberg Akademie CVO-skool het vanjaar weer rugbyspelers op die veld gehad wie in die 0/9 en Bulletjie wedstryde deelgeneem het.

Hierdie leerders het hul goed van hul taak gekwyt om die O/9 beker vir Noord-Transvaal se span omhoog te lig.

Die Bulletjies en 0/9 span, waarvan daar altesaam sewe Wolkie leerders was, het albei in hul afdelings geseëvier.

Just Furious

Die Noord-Transvaalse se O/9-rugbyspan gespeel en as wenners uit die stryd getree het. Die spellers hier is Hanno van Waveren, Dawid-Nel Grobbelaar, Stefan Hough en Reinhard Coertse.

Vossie oefen saam Titans ■ Bulletin Bradley Wilson, Gerhard Benade en Hugo Hough het vir die Noord-Transvaal se Bulletjie rugbyspan uitgedraf. Hierdie span het dan ook sy afdeling algeheel gewen.

Oud Vossies vang graad ■ Bulletin Christie-Ann Dreyer is ‘n voormalige leerder van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster wie in 2014 gematrikuleer het. Sy het haar BEd Senior- en Verdere Opleidingsfase graad aan die Noordwes-Universiteit (NWU) verwerf.

Sy is tans besig met haar BEd Honneurs in Bestuur en Leierskap-opvoeding, ook deur NWU, en is ‘n onderwyser by die Hoërskool Wolmaranstad.

MD Dreyer, ‘n oud-Vossie, het in 2017 sy BA-graad in Rekeningkundige Wetenskap ontvang. In dieselfde jaar het hy sy Raadeksamen, wat hy met lof geslaag het, geskryf en sy klerkskap voltooi. In 2019 het hy sy PGD in Belasting verwerf en in 2020 sal hy sy Meestersgraad aanpak.

Johan Harms is ‘n gr.11-leerder van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster asook ‘n kranige krieketspeler.

Dié Vossie was onlangs uitgenooi vir die Titans O/17 TAP (Talent Acceleration Program) oefen-

kamp.

Volgens Northern Titans Krieket se skakelafdeling is hierdie oefenkamp deel van Krieket Suid-Afrika se mandaat om nuwe talent te identifiseer.

Hierdie oefenkamp was op die 16de en 17de Junie in Pretoria gehou.

Plaaslike boykies trap Kaap vas

■ Bulletin Gerhard Booysen en Sydney Swart van die Insect Science-span het gedurende die 24ste en 25ste April aan een van Suid-Afrika se uitdagendste bergfiets wedrenne, die 36One Mountain Bike Challenge, op Oudtshoorn deelgeneem.

Hierdie twee bergfietsryers het in die span-afdeling vir mans deelgeneem en ‘n puik tweede plek algeheel behaal.

Booysen en Swart het met

honderde ander deelnemers van Oudtshoorn hierdie Klein Karoo-sirkelroete aangedurf.

Fietsryers het deur die nag getrap om die volgende dag die eindpunt oor ‘n afstand van 361 kilometer te voltooi.

Die afsnytyd vir hierdie marteltog is 36,1 huur. Die Tzaneeners het fluks die speke laat sing om in ‘n tyd van 17:48:09 oor die wenstreep te seil. In die span-afdeling moet elke fietsryer die afstand van 361km voltooi en gesamentlik die wedren voltooi.

Stephen “Legs” does it again ■ Roelof de Jonge

For 40-year old Stephen Madiye it is common practice to run from his home in Lenyenye to work and back once a week. In fact, over weekends it would not be uncommon to find him along the road to Haenertsburg as he completes one of his weekend training runs up the mountain.

The normal working class folk might not think they have the time to do as he does, but for Stephen, who has no formal coach or advisors to help him prepare for his races, this is the ideal time to practice.

But there is more to this rigorous weekly commute than simply preparing for the local long distance events. This athlete who hails from Tzaneen, competed

for the Foskor Athletics Club on Sunday the 9th of June in his sixth Comrades Ultra Marathon from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

He finished this year’s uphill-run in an astonishing 07:10:44. This achievement earned him a well-deserved silver medal.

“I don’t run 50 kilometre each day.

My routine starts on Tuesdays with a six-by-1000 metre practice session. On Wednesdays I run 8 kilometres and on Thursdays I run about 25 kilometres from home to work and then the same distance from work back home. It takes me about one hour and 25 minutes to complete the distance on way”, he explained with a proud smile.

Stephen is still determined to win the comrades. Lack of funding however is haltering his progress to achieve his dream goal to win outright. “Currently I don’t have someone coaching me, so I have to determine for myself how my body is doing. The lack of funds also prevent me from acquiring the ideal supplements my body needs in practice and on race day.”

Proper funding will also help him obtain the proper running shoes in order to com-

pete against the top athletes on the international circuit.

“I am currently working at KM Bolt and Nut in Tzaneen, I have chosen to be affiliated with the Foskor Club though. The reason being that this club supports its runners with transport and accommodation at the Comrades,” said Stephen.

He says he is internally thankful for the support from his employer, KM Bolt and Nut, who gives him the time off to compete in the Comrades Ultra Marathon as well as sponsoring him with pocket money for this gruelling race.

“I did a bit of athletics when I was at school along with karate and volleyball. I met a person at work one day who encouraged me to take up marathon running.

This person told me that anyone can run a marathon and this encouraged me to do so. When I run along the road, people will encourage me. My greatest encouragement though comes from my wife Cate”, said Stephen.

This gutsy athlete with minimal financial support is now preparing for the upcoming SA Run 4 Cancer Ultra Marathon on the 26th of October in Polokwane.
