Residents of Tickeyline and Mhanghweni in the vicinity of Maake plaza received the shock of their lives when bullets started flying over their rooftops during the early hours of Friday morning. A group of armed robbers had stormed the Maake depot of Net1 Financial Services (the company responsible for the SASSA payouts in the area) and walked away with an undisclosed sum of money. Two people were left injured in the incident.

The shooting happened at the plaza just behind the Lenyenye stadium adjacent to the FET College. At the time of the attack, people were preparing to leave for work while the shopping complex was readying to open for business. A source has revealed that the security gates to the complex, which are normally locked down at 20:00 in the evenings had not been closed as they were broken the night before. At the time of going to print they had however been repaired.

Onlookers said the plaza was due to start for business when there was a ‘boom’ at the centre which was followed by a multitude of gun shots. It is reported that after the robbers sped out of the centre after grabbing the money, they fired shots into the air as they exited the plaza. An elderly woman who was among the two people shot, was reported to be on the phone while the robbery was taking place. The other victim was an employee of the firm.

“I was at home when I heard a big boom which was followed by gunshots. They were so loud that I had to move from the house into my bathroom, confused and frightened, not knowing what to do,” said one resident living next to the plaza. Another resident from the Mhanghweni village, East of the Plaza, said that after the boom, bullets were flying through the air over her house.

causing chaos with other road users. The shooting stopped immediately when they had left the premises of the centre.

It was the first time that a depot of a service provider was robbed. Usually on the first day of each month, supermarket owners are robbed of money they had brought to the shops so they could pay out pensions on behalf of the government.

After the incident the prospective social grant receivers who had formed a queue before the arrival of the thugs, dispersed and formed a new queue at the local banks ATM. Others flocked to Lenyenye where pensions were being paid out.

Limpopo police spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe told Bulletin in an interview that nobody was arrested in connection with the matter and police investigations are still continuing. Ngoepe could not elaborate on many details on the matter.

Water supply was again interrupted in the Phalaborwa area for twelve hours on Tuesday as Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) shut down the water purification works in the area. The dams were put at maximum capacity prior to the shut down which follows the water shortages that hit the area. The shortages were as a result of the purification plant being clogged with mud and debris which prevented the plant from operating at full capacity.

Mopani District Municipality (MDM) spokesperson, Witness Tiva said that Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) will be executing an emergency shut down at the Phalaborwa Water Scheme from as early as 06:00 in the mornings to 18:00 in the afternoons. However the water pressure and water shortages may be experienced throughout the entire supply area. Residents are therefore urged to use water sparingly.

This comes on the heels of an-

other water supply interruption in the Phalaborwa area which left the townships of Namakgale and Lulekane and the adjacent areas without water for some time after the heavy rains which fell in the past few weeks. The council reported that they had sent out technicians who were to work with the LNW officials to speedily normalise the situation.

In another development within the Mopani District, the municipality in partnership with Maxprof has donated wheelchairs and other devices to schools in Tzaneen and the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM).

The names of the schools are the Letaba After Care at Nkowankowa and Modubatse High School at Ga-Kgapane. The donations included six wheelchairs, walking canes, braille machines and other essentials to cater for the blind.

Where were these municipal officials during the last five years when the blind needed assistance or when the struggling artists of the area needed a platform to promote themselves?

Petty theft is rampant in village

The Garden Cottages in Haenertsburg, consisting of some 40 flats for senior citizens, have been experiencing petty theft for the past few months. Hosepipes and plastic chairs have been stolen off their small verandahs, washing plus pegs on the washing lines were stolen and ornaments are being stolen off their outside tables.

A case has been lodged with Haenertsburg SAPS. The police came to investigate but informed the residents that the station is understaffed with only two policemen on duty.

Villagers are urged to be observant and see that their alarms are in working order and that their security measures are in place.

Phalaborwa continues to crumble Phalaborwa’s already crippled infrastructure is now deteriorating at such a rapid pace that one would be hard tasked not to assume that it were planned. Last week Bulletin posed a challenge to the residents of the once beautiful town to count the number of potholes in their street, and the answers were damned near horrifying.

In total, only twelve residents posted their count which amounted to a staggering 801 potholes recorded in just 12 streets around the residential areas. Read that again and consider then that in September of 2017, we were told that the municipality of this town (BPM) have an annual roads maintenance budget of more than R4 million along with an active roads maintenance crew tasked with daily inspections and restorations of roads in town.

Here is an extract of the conversation we had with the spokesperson of the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Jonas Mahesu, two years ago.

“There is an active roads maintenance crew with an annual budget of R4 781 469 tasked with keeping the town’s roads in good shape.

The municipality has been working on restoring the aging infrastructure since 2014. The current administration has a plan to address the ageing infrastructure both electrical and roads. From the 2014/2015 financial year the municipality has done major roads rehabilitation.”

To claim that major roads rehabilitation has been done while the roads in your town resemble the aftermath of a carpet bombing run, is insulting. More so the fact that Mahesu also claimed that there are three types of maintenance schedules namely; routine maintenance, planned maintenance and daily maintenance. He even went as far as to explain that the daily maintenance crews are responsible for daily inspections and reparations of the roads.

Quite obviously this has not been the case and most likely has not been a priority on the BPM management’s list for the past year and a half since we last reported on this matter. In fact, it took a lengthy article by this publication before any road work was done.

Not only has Phalaborwa lost two of its electricians amid the current power crisis, the town has been battling the Mopani District and Lepelle Northern Water regularly to secure a steady water supply. Topping the long list of struggles which also include the recent bouts of black rain from Palabora Copper’s magnetite dumps, must be the deterioration of the roads infrastructure.

The state in which the town of Phalaborwa finds itself in indicates either complete incompetence or complete apathy on the part of the municipal management and their councillors.

What will it take for the residents of this town to be taken seriously considering that three marches to the municipal buildings and numerous meetings and correspondences with the mayor, Pule Shayi, have had absolutely no impact.

hesu for comment on these matters as he has not answered any of our previous enquiries and seems to have followed suit with the other municipal spokespeople who have opted to completely ignore this publication (and by default, our readers). We are still awaiting official responses to our questions on a number of matters.

We have sent emails regarding the BPM’s possible ties to a recycling operation by a former political spokesperson, allegations being made against a former CFO who allegedly pays no rates or taxes on his property in town and another inquiry regarding a very hefty fine issued to a couple who are being accused of tampering with the municipality’s electrical distribution box. It would appear that the communications department operate on the same level of efficiency as the maintenance department?

Members sing worship songs to Malema The worship songs which members of the EFF sang for their leader, Julius Malema, were soon replaced by tight control measures where the same members were barred from using their cellphones in the presence of the party leaders.

He was received with praise songs which included “Malema, our god we praise you”.

Supporters were not allowed to make phone calls or take photos of the EFF leaders or the proceedings of the meeting itself. It was reported that the move was aimed at preventing information leaks.

The meeting, named the Regional Elective Task Team (RETT), aimed at updating the attendees on the current strategies to snatch voters mostly from ANC and DA who have a large following in the vicinity of the Bathlabine and the Bakgaga communities. The arrival of Malema as earlier reported prompted the ANC followed by the DA to host their election related meetings in the same hall.

Though he was reported to have stated that he could fill the hall from as early as 10:00 in the morning, Malema only arrived at the hall just after 19:00. The hall was nonetheless filled to capacity with only members of the Branch Electoral Committees who were dancing to his praises. The gates were already locked and only those who could be allowed in by the organisers were free to pass.

Mercebenz Viano which he normally used for parliamentary purposes, and when he left the meeting later that evening was escourted by a government sponsored blue lighted brigade.

He was joined by Jossie Buthane, his lawyer Tumi Mokoena, Godrich Gardee (secretary) while local Eff councillor Dumisani Malemela was the host.

According to a member of the party who was in the meeting, Malema had visited all the sub regions of Mopani before he landed at the Lenyenye community hall. The meeting was not opened to members of the public, but only members of the election task team to be briefed about the road ahead before the elections.

After the meeting had concluded, members were provided with t-shirts which many still wore the following day. Members after the meeting were served with food parcels from expensive food outlets.

Though it was officially stated that the reason behind Malema’s late arrival was due to obligations in Giyani, there were whispers among members of the community that the actual reason was to conceal the fact he was transported in government vehicles which was supplemented by members of the police VIP protection who are paid by the state to assist politicians to do party work with government resources. How-

ever members of the SAPS, though the venue was just a few hundred metres from the hall, were nowhere to be seen.

Making turns to feed the sheep The arrival of Julius Malema in Mopani which caught the other political parties by surprise was acted upon when the ANC in Lesedi cluster held its Electoral Task Team meeting last Friday at the Lenyenye community hall. This move was seen as damage control after the impact that the Malema visit might have on the community.

Just as Malema did by arriving in government vehicles which were later hidden, the ANC members arrived in government luxury vehicles which were quickly driven out after the occupants had entered the hall. Unlike the small parties which held their meetings at their respective homes, ANC chose the community hall on Friday. They were copied by their nemesis, the DA, who converged on the same hall the following Sunday.

The closure of the distribution of social grants at Lenyenye was

followed by vehicles entering the premises of the hall on Friday afternoon carrying women and men dressed in the colours of the ruling party while leaders which included councillors were clad in their private outfits. The number of luxury vehicles were limited as after the politicians touched ground, the vehicles were quickly driven off.

Though the meeting was not a lengthy affair, it was said to be a replica of the Malema tour. The meeting was attended among others by members of the ANC Branch Elective Committees (BET) from the Lesedi cluster. It could not be established if the meeting really dwelt on the visit by the EFF leader, or whether the ANC had scheduled the meeting weeks before and the EFF merely scooped them.

as members of the DA took their turn to show some muscle and save some face. Residents were transported from various branches in the Tzaneen area to the hall where they were to be addressed by leaders of the party. The DA launched their manifesto two weeks ago.

On the Tuseday ahead of the arrival of Malema, the DA faithful were spotted putting up posters of the party throughout the Lenyenye township. Their hope was that when Malema arrived he would see the township painted blue. When Malema arrived though, the posters could not be seen because it was already late in the evening. The massive billboard crossing the road between Nkowankowa and Tzaneen however, could possibly be seen from the moon.

Nou ja, dit mag wel wees, maar die gevoel onder die gemeenskap is egter dat daar nie ordentlike onderhoud op die paaie gedoen word nie en tweedens, wanneer herstelwerk wel geimplimenteer word, dat die vakmanskap veel te wense laat. Ons kan net hoop dat wanneer die verkiesingskoors verby waai, staatsamptenare weer sal terugkeer aarde toe en eintlik begin doen wat hulle veronderstel is om te doen – die gemeenskap te dien.

An icon dies in Italy Enrico Usseglio 18/05/1833 – 03/03/2019 was one of the most familiar and loved members of the Haenertsburg community.

He left Italy in the early 1950s and settled in Haenertsburg in 1971. As a master cabinet maker, his furniture graces the Magoebaskloof Hotel and the Coach House as well as countless private homes in the Haenertsburg/ Magoebaskloof/Agatha area.

In retirement his trusty Discovery could be seen trundling to Picasso’s (now Lekwar) in the mornings where he would break his fast and have “Holy Communion” with then owner Marietta Iuel.

Lunch would be either there or at one of the other village establishments and then at five in the afternoon he’d be seated at his table at the Pot & Plow sipping red wine. He would always be surrounded by fellow businessmen, other locals and, of course, the ladies.

Single for most of his life and,

with his Italian charm, Enrico had the ladies eating out of his hand.

Despite his irreverent expression of “Porco Deo” and a few more choice Italian swear words, the ladies flocked to be at his side and he almost had more social engagements than the Queen of England.

He spent every available free time in the Kruger National Park and no one knew the Park like Enrico did. Two of his constant companions into the KNP were former Afrikaans head at SLC, Estie Fenske, and former wine representative, Amanda Smith.

He instilled in both a love for the KNP and its wildlife and they’ve passed the knowledge gleaned from Enrico on to their friends and the next generation.

With his health failing, Enrico returned to Italy in August 2018.

Although Enrico will be remembered for his fine craftsmanship, he will be mostly remembered for his generosity and kindness of spirit.

MEDIA RELEASE: Aggressive crime on the up The police in Tzaneen have arrested 27 people for various crimes in the area over the past week alone. Of these 27 suspects, one man was arrested for rape, one man for attempted rape and another man arrested for violating a protection order.

Shockingly, seven people were taken into custody for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and five more arrested for common assault. That is a total of twelve people arrested in just seven days for behaving like absolute hooligans.

Not only has the level of aggression shown a marked increase, but theft is on the rise too with seven people arrested for shoplifting, one suspect for common robbery and one more for theft out of motor vehicle.

Perhaps the most ludicrous, or at least the most absurd sounding arrest was the cuffing of two

people for “pointing someone as a witch”. At the time of going to print we were not entirely sure what the charge entails nor were we certain of the magnitude of the penalties associated with said charge, but we have been told it carries a prison sentence. The charge of “pointing someone as a witch” was brought about after a number of traditional healers were thought to be witches and murdered through mob justice, often by means of necklacing.

Lastly, one person was arrested for illegal hunting.

Though the police in the area seem to have been beefing up their efforts to curb crime in Tzaneen, more still needs to be done and that would require the assistance of every member of the public. Join your neighbourhood watch organization, be vigilant and report suspicious people or behaviour immediately.

Granny’s Grumbles - ACRONYMS

About twenty-five years ago when I had taken down shorthand for the boss, one of the headings in the transcript of the minutes was “Fire and Rescue Team save the day” Now in the mining environment (as in the political world), acronyms are a fact of life – just think of NATO – UNESCO – ECM – BREXIT – SHEQ and numerous other examples.

When I acronymed the heading it read “FARTS save the day”. I knew the rest of the mine would think this hysterically funny since my boss was the leading light in the formation of this team. I had only noticed this after it was printed so I thought I should mention to him that maybe the name of the team should be changed. Since he was not going to be available until the next morning I left the minutes on his desk with a small note asking if I should change anything.

The next morning I was horrified to discover that somebody was already photocopying numerous signed copies of the minutes. I rushed into the boss and asked if he was happy about the heading. What heading? He hadn’t even noticed. The name of the team was hurriedly changed to RAFTs. I do not like to lose face – over the years I

have heard acronyms thrown about and I always nod sagely even if I do not have the faintest idea what they stand for.

So when I visited an acquaintance one day (for the first time) and found her on her knees on the lawn with a pair of scissors trimming the edges and discovered that she always did this because she had been diagnosed with OCD I made it appear that I knew exactly what she was on about. Her house was immaculate – nothing was out of place and in fact it hardly looked like it was lived in. I decided to check with Mr Google who should be able to tell me what OCD meant. I suddenly realised that my husband (to whom I have been married for 45 years) is also an OCD subject.

It doesn’t matter what job he does, he always has a spirit level, a tape measure and a 90 degree square at the ready. The kitchen which is also his domain has to be tickety-boo and woe betide anybody who leaves dirty dishes lying around. As a family we all had to put up with these idiosyncrasies which I put down to boarding school and the army. Living in a regimented society must make you like that – or so I thought. Aha! I was wrong.

I couldn’t wait to tell him that he was actually suffering from a disorder. According to him I was the one suffering from a disorder – the garden looked like an unkempt forest and I was naturally untidy. If there was one place I did not allow my husband to interfere in was my garden – if he had been charge I can imagine – rows of plats in dead straight lines – all colour coded and exactly 50 comes apart.

He had once decided to prune a very special creeper of mine while I was away – this Jade Vine – as any gardener will tell you – is the most beautiful creeper in the world and it does not take kindly to pruning. It expired and I could not replace it. I can honestly say that I was closer to divorce than at any other time in my marriage.

Anyway – I digress. My husband and I were friendly with a couple who had a guest house in Palaborwa. The husband and wife occasionally came together to the nursery, but usually the husband arrived on a Saturday morning and wondered around looking for something

new. He was an avid gardener and the wife basically ran the guest house. One Saturday morning he told me that his wife had gone to the coast for ten days on a well-deserved break and he was running the guest house.

A couple of weeks later they both arrived at the nursery – there appeared to be a rather icy atmosphere in the air so when the wife headed off down to the tea-garden which was manned by my husband I was not really surprised. Don could not wait for his wife to be out of earshot before he let me in on the whole reason for the “no-speaks”. Evidently while Mary was away on holiday he had decided to rearrange the kitchen – according to him it was a big job and a lot of hard work on his part. When she arrived back, far from being grateful she had hit the roof, told him he had no right to interfere in her kitchen and they had barely spoken a word since. Something one should never do is get involved in a domestic quarrel. I empathised with Don but said I would never have tried to rearrange our kitchen – it was my husband’s domain and I just tripped very gently around it.

Eventually I persuaded Don to join me for a cup of coffee in the tea garden. Mary was getting a very sympathetic hearing from my husband. He agreed that nobody should interfere in a cook’s kitchen and ignored the peeved looks I was throwing his way. According to Mary, the cups and saucers were no longer anywhere near the kettle – the pots and pans were on the opposite side of the kitchen from the stove – the whole place was in chaos and she had to sort it out.

I suggested (diplomatically) that they both (she and my husband) suffered from OCD and Don obviously did not realise that this was almost an illness. This did not sit well with either Mary or my husband but Don at least went home feeling a lot better. Since then I have discovered that virtually everybody in the world suffers from some form of compulsion and I am left wondering if maybe psychologists and psychiatrists have some organisation where they come up with acronyms that sound very serious and bring in a lot of business for them?

Daar word gevra “hoekom is daar so baie kerke, elkeen met ‘n ander tipe diens?” Dit kan miskien so verduidelik word: mense verskil, in taal, kultuur, opvoeding en sosiale omgang. So, wat is die regte kerk om by te woon? Na my mening is dit die kerk waarin jy die regte boodskap vir jou ontvang, waar jy een is met God. Dit gaan nie soseer oor die prediker nie, maar oor die verhouding met God, veral jou persoonlike verhouding. Baie mense gaan na’n spesifieke kerk toe omdat hulle ouers of voorouers die kerk al jare lank bywoon. Dit is hoe ons geleer is. Maar God wil hê dat ons ons eie besluite moet neem en nie soos skape ander net blindelings volg nie. Ons moet altyd bevraagteken of ons die regte boodskap kry.

As ons na ‘n preek luister, moet ons dit met oop ore luister en altyd die boodskap in dit bevraagteken, is dit wat in die Skrifte verkondig word of is dit net ‘n blote preek?

Dominees word geleer hoe om dit wat in die Bybel staan te vertolk, deur hulle na te gaan en om die konteks en tydperk reg te vertolk. Ongelukkig neem sommige predikante net ‘n spesifieke vers uit ‘n teks en gebruik dit om sy/haar preek om te bou.

Ons kan altyd dit wat gesê word in die teks gaan opsoek om te sien of dit wel bestaan of nie. Die Here het ons die gawe gegee om die Skrifte nouliks te bestudeer, al is ons hoe onkundig in Teologie, kan ons wel ons eie verstand gebruik en vir ander vra hoe hulle dit verstaan. Dit is hoekom selgroepe van so belang is. Daar kan jy soortgelyke mense ontmoet en die Bybel bestudeer, hulle mening ook inwin en tot jou eie gevolgtrekking kom. ‘n Persoon wat dit alleen wil aanpak, faal gewoonlik om by die regte boodskap uit te kom. Onthou, leraars het nie altyd die antwoorde nie, hulle moet ook naslaanwerk doen, en miskien ook die menings van hulle mede-kollegas inwin.

Tyd en geduld word benodig om die Skifte behoorlik te verstaan en menige van ons gooi te maklik die handdoek in, veral as dit moeilik gaan. Volharding is die antwoord.

The golden kiwi has arrived From documentary film making and living in London in the UK for seven years, Jonathan Trusler (38) has embarked on farming golden kiwis, a new variety of kiwi fruit. Speaking at his father-in-law’s Blueberry Heights farm in the Magoebaskloof, Jonathan initially farmed with blueberries.

Although he’s still farming blueberries, it’s hard to compete with only small scale blueberries on 1½ hectares. Most new blueberry farms are 50 hectares or more. After looking at blueberry long term possibilities five years ago, Jonathan knew he had to look for something else.

He took out an old blueberry orchard that wasn’t producing much as it was the wrong variety. In this area he planted 3,000 golden kiwi seedlings in 2014. Another 1½ hectare area, at Stanford Lake, is under construction for another golden kiwi orchard, this time bigger plants.

The aim is 40 tons per hectare when in full production in about two years’ time.

Male and female kiwis are needed therefore one in ten plants is a male.

The white flowers, about the size of a R5 coin, look slightly different. The female flower has a baby kiwi in it and this becomes the fruit. The male is high in pollen but low in nectar.

Its flowers drop off after the flowers are spent.

Pollination is crucial with kiwis, therefore bees are vital. Pollination has to be correct to get the yield and the size. Jonathan rents ten hives per hectare from Izak Claasen of Uitvlugt Bees. Izak is doing research at the University of Pretoria on kiwi pollination. Brooding hives have to be used and not normal beehives.

“We’re the only certified organic golden kiwi farm in South Africa.

We start picking late February, early March. Last season was the first lot going into South African shops and there’s a big demand with limited supply. However, most fruit will be for export to Italy, UK and Germany. We’re competing against New Zealand but at least our crops are one month earlier.

The golden kiwi has a higher yield than the green kiwi and prices are also higher on the market.

We produce counter supply to the north which includes China, the USA and Europe

with California and Italy growing both gold and green kiwis.”

The golden kiwi is sweeter than the green kiwi, has yellow flesh inside, and less hair on the skin. Market leaders, New Zealand, are under one company called Zespri, the biggest commercial grower of kiwi fruit in the world. In the early 1900s New Zealand went to China and came across Chinese Gooseberries growing wild in that vast country. China is the biggest kiwi grower in the world but the fruit feeds only its own huge population. The New Zealanders took the kiwi back to their country.

The fruit was marketed to the USA and renamed kiwi as kiwis look like the New Zealand national bird with its round, hairy appearance.

Jonathan says, “The golden kiwi does well in this climate, can be farmed on a small scale and is something new for South Africa. Some 20 farmers are growing golden kiwis, in the Magoebaskloof, the White River/Nelspruit area, Richmond in Kwa-Zulu Natal and southern Cape.”

The golden kiwi is picked when hard. Jonathan monitors the sugar level BRIX with a refractometer. The ideal sugar level is 7.5 BRIX. Once the kiwi gets to the critical threshold the fruit is ready for picking.

“I also look at the colour of the flesh, the pressure and colour of the seed. Once ready for harvest the 25 labourers snap off the fruit at the stalk. The kiwis are trained on a pergola system that is 1.9 metres high.

The orchard is under shade cloth because of the threat of hail storms.

There’s also a misting system in place to mitigate the danger of late

frost. Vervet monkeys eat the fruit but their damage is negligible.”

“The fruit goes into the pack house, then into cold storage at 0.5 degrees Celsius. I have a generator for power failures. A truck takes the produce to Cape Town harbour. At the same temperature, the produce takes four weeks to be shipped to Europe.

The fruit can be kept at this temperature for three months. As soon as it comes out of storage, it starts ripening.”

“When it’s time for winter pruning, all canes that produced fruit the previous season are pruned off.

Once a cane has produced fruit, it won’t produce again.

Opwindende nuwe mango seleksies Op die 8ste Februarie 2019 het die Suid Afrikaanse Mango Kwekers Vereniging (SAMKV) ‘n Kultivar Dag aangebied vir hul lede by Bavaria Fruit Estate in Hoedspruit. Die dag het gegaan oor die evaluering van nuwe en belowende mango seleksies, wat in kultivar proewe geplant is reg oor die land by vyf mede – werkers (produsente), in verskillende klimaat streke, naamlik Malelane, Tzaneen, Hoedspruit, Nelspruit en Clanwilliam.

Die evaluerings proewe word behartig deur Christo Human en Salomie Willemse van die LNR-TSG op Nelspruit, en befonds deur die SAMKV. ‘n Paar van Bavaria se eie seleksies, wat uit hulle teelprogram kom, was ook op die lys om geëvalueer te word.

Derek Donkin, CEO van Subtrop het almal verwelkom en ingelig oor die proewe asook die verloop van die dag en die evaluerings proses. Altesaam was daar 53 belowende seleksies om te evalueer volgens smaak, kleur, groote en vorm. Die verskillende seleksies strek oor ‘n wye reeks van karakter eienskappe wat aanklank by verskillende markte sal vind. Die uitvoer pakhuise verkies meer ‘n ronde soort vrug om die verpakking op die paklyn te vergemaklik, terwyl ander

nis-markte meer sal konsentreer op smaak as vorm of kleur. Sekere lande waarna daar uitgevoer word sal meer ‘n rooi/pers mango verkies terwyl lande soos India meer geel en groen vrugte verkies met ‘n baie soet smaak in plaas van die meer tradisionele ‘’terpentyn’’ smaak. Hierdie seleksies word ook in die boorde geëvalueer deur die navorsers asook plaaslike produsente, waarna daar ook gekyk word na die boom groote en natuurlik opbrengs, ‘n belangrike einskap van ‘n goeie seleksie.

Die resultate van die dag is nog besig om verwerk te word, maar daar is groot opgewondenheid oor ‘n sekere paar uitsonderlike seleksies wat baie belofte toon ten opsigte van toekomstige voordele vir die Suid Afrikaanse mango bedryf. Een van die LNR seleksies, wat al ‘n paar jaar in die teel program is, en elke jaar presteer, is in die begin proses om gekomersialiseer te word. Die dag wat vir die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar aangebied was, was ‘n groot sukses en is op ‘n toepaslike wyse met ‘n lekker vingerete afgesluit.

Government and Macadamia Grower unite South Africa’s macadamia industry is, together with Australia, the most sophisticated in the world. It is also the largest producer globally.

This competitive advantage could be under threat due to lack of collaboration with government to ensure ongoing and new market access.

“For the long term, as an industry we are not leveraging our reputation and premium supplier status in the global macadamia market as strategically as possible. In recent years we have ridden a wave of insatiable demand. Global macadamia supply continues to increase rapidly and opportunity for growth in this industry still remains favourable. However the type of demand will mature into new markets and more enlightened consumer needs. We are unfortunately not thinking with a mindset for where growth potential lies to meet this new demand.

Our biggest future challenge is market access,” says Mark Hassenkamp, director, Red Sun Hortitech. One of only five industry body, SAMAC, accredited macadamia nurseries.

Proactive industry body and government collaboration is integral to ensure the standard is set for our industry’s future. Together with leading quality assurance and compliance standards, Australia leads the way in its beneficial bilateral trade and import tariff agreements with key territories around the world. We need to follow suit to remain in top spot too. The last few years has been profitable for all involved in the macadamia industry. Implicit in not getting it right is that the reputation of South Africa’s macadamias could fall foul into those of less developed markets that offer poorer quality product at present.

“Discussion around food consumption trends alongside continued population growth remains at the forefront. The macadamia market’s customers are going to ask more and more questions around where their food comes from.

They are strong lobbyists, and also our greatest critics. Being prepared, in the face of exponential growth in crop supply, means thinking about how the landscape looks in years to come. To achieve this we need to collaborate as an industry together with government,” concludes Hassenkamp.

Budget 2019 — Agriculture outcomes An important lesson from the current Eskom crisis is the lack of investment overtime, and as with this critical institution of our economy, agriculture is equally facing the same challenge.

The allocation consists of R1.8 billion for the implementation of 262 priority land-reform projects over the next three years, and the R3.7 billion to assist emerging farmers seeking to acquire land to farm.

On this point, the details are necessary as implementation has been a challenge. This includes a clear programme for the implementation of the blended finance model by the Landbank. The outbreak of the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has elevated the importance of biosecurity and the allocation to beef up laboratories, and development of vaccines is a positive step.

In this regard it is positive that the Minister made a R456 million provision for the employment of newly graduated veterinarians within rural areas as part of their compulsory community service.

There is however no clear mention of the current drought affecting parts of the North West, Free State, and Northern Cape and this is a missed opportunity. Overall, positive budget from an agriculture perspective, but we need to closely watch implementation.

Jon Hyde receives Chairman’s Award

One of the Principles within the oldest independent motor vehicle dealers in South Africa, Jon Hyde, was presented with the prestigious Chairman’s Award by Toyota South Africa at the Kyalami racetrack on Friday, 22nd of February.

Hyde received the award during the annual Toyota National Dealer Awards ceremony which included dealerships from around the country.

When the dealership opened its doors to the Duiwelskloof community more than five decades ago in 1966, it was the start of what was to become one of the region’s greatest success stories. By the time Hyde joined the team in 1991, Trophy Toyota was selling around ten vehicles per annum. Through his leadership that figure has skyrocketed to an astronomical 400 units per year.

Enter the 9th annual SAB Foundation Awards now The 9th Annual SAB Foundation Social Innovation Awards and 4th Annual Disability Empowerment Awards are now open for entry and eligible entrepreneurs and businesses are encouraged to enter.

The awards carry total prize money of more than R12 million with the winner walking away with up to R1.3 million in grant funding.

The Social Innovation Awards are aimed at innovators, social entrepreneurs, institutions and social enterprises with prototypes or early-stage businesses that can solve social problems. These products, services, business models and processes should directly address the challenges faced by low-income women, youth, people living with disabilities, or people living in rural areas.

The Disability Empowerment Awards seek and award social enterprises, which have come up with innovative solutions, which improve access to the economy, and/or solutions for disabled people, while generating enough revenue to become sustainable over time. People with disabilities are some of the most marginalised members of society with a high unemployment rate.

The road to Maré’s Kop is along a dirt road called the D road or Annie’s Fortune Road. It’s not a good road with some hair pin bends along the way.

However, the steep climb to the venue affords some spectacular views. The lushness of Haenertsburg is left behind as the vegetation turns into dry bush with beautiful indigenous trees and vegetation. Eight kms along this road is a turn off to the left marked by a farm gate. From there it’s a mere km to the spot that really makes anyone feel as though they’re on top of the world. There is an alternative and better road coming from the Polokwane/ Randfontein side at the Horseshoe Bend.

Maré’s Kop also hosts church camps

The wedding venue at Maré’s Kop commands an impressive view. At 1,550 metres above sea level, it’s only topped by the Iron Crown Mountain at 1,723 metres above sea level.

The complex consists of a chapel and a separate reception area with a well-equipped kitchen. The stone for the walls was sourced from the 200 hectare Koringdraai farm. Another building serves as accommodation in backpacker style and can house 60 people.

The chapel and wedding venue can seat 120 guests. Jan and his wife Thea Maré started building some 11 years ago and have been operational these past four years. Jan also has cattle and vegetables on the farm and works at Silicon Smelters. Thea, her daughter Marlien Meintjes

The quaint white-painted steel bridal coach, made by a company in Polokwane, is drawn by four people. This mode of transport affords the bridal couple a novel means of transport from the rooms to the chapel and to the wedding venue.

Op die rugbyveld het die o/9’s drie uit hul vier wedstryde oortuigend gewen en net teen Nelspruit met 24-0 vasgeval. Tzaneen het die Berglanders met 52-0 geklop en later vir Laeveld huis toe gestuur met ‘n 32-0 oorwinning. Witrivier het die manne so bietjie laat werk maar het tog op 27-24 die knieë gebuig.

Die o/10 seuns het op hul beurt al hul wedstryde gewen toe hulle met 19-12 vir Bergland en 27-5 vir die Laevelders geklop het. Later het Tzaneen ook vir Nelspruit met 42-0 en Witrivier met 55-0 huistoe gestuur.

Op hul beurt het Tzaneen se o/11span vir die Laevelders met 27-0 en hul bure, Bergland met 12-5 geklop voor hul aangegaan het om Nelspruit met 17-0 en Witrivier met 44-0 te laat les op sê.

Die twee senior spanne het uitstekend gevaar en al hul wedstryde gewen wat ‘n baie goeie vooruitsig vir die toekoms van hoërskole rugby skets. Tzaneen se Tweedes het met 34-5 vir Laeveld geklop en 17-7 teen Bergland gewen. Nelspruit het duidelik die Limpopo-manne onder-

skat en moes met ‘n neederlaag van 43-0 hul strategië gaan herkyk. Om mee af te sluit het Laerskool Tzaneen met Witrivier met ‘n telling van 40-0 afgereken.

Die vlagskip van die Larries, die Eerstespan het die Berglanders met ‘n telling van 55-5 vermorsel om ‘n duidelike boodskap aan hul opponent vir die res van die seisoen te stuur. Laeveld het met ‘n telling van 34-0 hul rieme teen Tzaneen styf geloop en Witrivier moes met 43-0 tevrede wees. Laerskool Nelspruit was die enigste opponent op die dag wat vir Tzaneen teenstand kon bied, maar moes self hul koppe met 14-10 laat hang.

Op die netbalbane het die dogters hulself goed van hul taak gekwyt om meeste van hul wedstryde ook met oorwinnings af te sluit. Die o/9A-span het 7-4 teen Bergland en 12-0 teen Witrivier gewen voor hulle met slegs twee punte teen Laerskool Laeveld vasgeval het. Hul B-span het al drie hul wedstryde gewen deur 10-0 teen Bergland, 13-1 teen Laeveld en 9-1 teen Witrivier te speel.

Die o/10A-dogters het al drie uit vier wedstryde gewen en een gelykop teen Nelspruit met ‘n telling va 6-elk gespeel.

Hul B-span het ook goed vertoon, maar kon net daarin slag om een wedstryd teen Witrivier met 9-6 te wen.

Tzaneen se o/11A-span het 8-3 teen Bergland gewen, 12-6 teen Laeveld, 10-3 teen Nelspruit en 8-7 teen Witrivier gewen om

al hulle wedstryde van die reeks positief te eindig. Die o/11B-span het na hulle nederlaag van 6-21 teen Witrivier, daarin geslaag om 18-1 teen Bergland, 9-7 teen Laeveld en 6-8 teen Nelspruit te speel.

Die vier senior spanne het net sulke uitstekende wedstryde agter die blad met die o/12A-span wat 20-19 teen Laeveld, 24-4 teen Witrivier en 26-8 teen Bergland gewen het. Hulle het met slegs vier doele teen Nelspruit met 148-22 verloor. Tzaneen se o/12B-dogters het vir Nelspruit met 24-10 geklop, met 8-13 teen Laeveld verloor en later met 15-4 vir Witrivier en 15-10 vir Bergland geklop.

Die o/13B-span het teenstand gehad in hul kragmetings maar het tog steeds daarin geslaag om twee wedstryde te wen en twee net-net te verloor. Hulle klop Bergland met 17-10 en wen hul stryd teen Laeveld met twee doele op 1614. Laerskool Nelspruit het die Larries met 21-6 laat les opsê terwyl Tzaneen en Witrivier gelyk op 8-elk geïndig het.

Die hoofwedstryd van die dag was die o/13A-span se kragmetings teen dié vier skole. In hul eerste wedstryd het Tzaneen met vier doele vir Laeveld geklop voordat hulle later met 22-10 met Bergland afgereken het. Witrivier het met 27-13 teen Tzaneen vasgeval maar Nelspruit het seker gemaak dat ten minste een oorwinning in die Spruit nagelaat word.

Tzaneen verloor die kragmeting teen die Nellies met 15 doele teenoor 19.

Ruben le Roux, an eighth grader at Stanford Lake College, is a multi-disciplined rider who competed in Limpopo’s Equestrian Competition qualifying round over the weekend of the 8th and 9th of February. He participated on two horses, with great results. Ruben and his thoroughbred gelding, Our Mattox, participated in four classes, and placed first in Handy Hunter (a team event), third in Show jumping 1 metre, fourth in Show jumping (two phase speed class) 1 metre high and second in the Working Hunter 90 cm competition.

On his second horse, the warmblood gelding, Ti Quinta, he again participated in four classes earning a sixth placing in Show jumping (competition class) 1 m, fifth place in Show jumping (two phase speed class) 1 m, fourth in the Equitation 90 cm and fourth in the Working Hunter 90 cm event.

Wintersport skop teen Centurion af Die afgelope naweek het die wintersport seisoen vir die plaaslike skole afgeskop toe Ben Vorster in Pretoria teen Centurion gaan kragte meet het. Dit was die Vossies se eerste hokkie, netbal en rugbywedstryde vir die jaar.

Op die hokkieveld het elke een van die Ben Vorster dogterspanne hul wedstryde oortuigend gewen met nie een doel wat teen hul aangeteken is nie. Die o/14A-span het met nege doele teenoor nul uit die stryd getree terwyl hul B-span met 4-0 gewen het.

Die o/15A-span het twee doele aangeteken om 2-0 te wen terwyl hul B-span met enkele doel op 1-0 as oorwinnaars uit hul stryd getree het. Beide die o/16A-span en die Tweede span het hul wedstryde met 6-0 gewen voor die Eerstespan vir Centurion met ‘n telling van vier nul terug kleedkamers toe gestuur het.

Die Vossie dogters het 32 doele aangeteken.

Die Eerste-seunspan het ook ‘n wedstryd gespeel, maar moes met ‘n telling van 1-2 die knie voor Centurion buig. Hierdie belowende uitslae beklemtoon weer die merkwaardige impak van die astrobaan op die Hoërskool hokkiespelers se vaardighede.

Aan die anderkant van die gronde op die netbalbane, het Ben Vorster se spanne net sulke belowende uitslae opgedis met slegs twee van die agt spanne wat teen hul gasheer vasgeval het.

Die o/14A- en B-spanne het beide hul wedstryde met tellings van 16-8 en 16-3 onderskeidelik gewen terwyl die o/15A- en B-spanne soortgelyke oorwinnings van 25-5 en 24-13 teen die telbord gehang het.

Die o/16A-dogters het ‘n uiters moeilike stryd op hande gehad met twee spanne wat tot op die laaste nippertjie nog wipplank oor die telbord gery het. Uiteindelik kon Centurion in die doodsnikke van die wedstryd daarin slag om met net een doel die wedstryd op 22-23 te eindig. Die o/16B-span het hul wedstryd met nege doeleelk, gelykop geïndig.

Ben Vorster se Tweedespan het hul wedstryd met 19 doele teenoor slegs 13 gewen in voor-

bereiding vir die Eerstespan kragmeting waarvoor die netballiefhebbers die heel dag al gewag het.

Net soos met die o/16-span was hierdie ‘n naelbyt stryd met nie een van die spanne wat bereid was om die ander een die voortou te gee nie. Doel na doel het die telbord laat bewe totdat dit uiteindelik die Centrurianers was wat geslaag het om die wedstryd met net een doel op 23-24 te wen.

Op die rugbyveld het dinge ook nie so goed gelyk vir die Centurion-manne wat slegs een wedstryd kon wen nie. Die o/14A-manne het skouspelagtige rugby gelewer en Hoërskool Centurion 45-0 laat les opsê terwyl hul B-spanhul eie wedstryd met 17-5 gewen het.

Die o/15A-span het 30-26 vasgeval, maar die o/15B-span het die bordjies verhang en hulle wedstryd 17-5 gewen.

Die dag het beweeg na die seniors wat mekaar moes pak. Ben Vorster se o/16A-span het daarin geslaag om Centurion vir die eerste keer in drie jaar te klop met ‘n telling van 24-7. Die o/16B-span het gevolg met ‘n telling van 28-7.

Ben Vorster se Derdespan het gesorg vir klipharde rugby en kon daarin slaag om 28-7 te wen. Hulle is deur die Inyathi’s gevolg wat met goeie hardlooprugby wat selfs vir oorlede Doc Craven hoendervleis sou gee, hul opponente deurmekaar gehad het. Die manne het hulle doellyn verdedig asof dit die laaste keer is en hulle verdediging omgedraai in punte.

Hulle het agt drieë ingeryg.

Die Eerstespan het die eerste helfte gesukkel en was voor hulle hul oë kon uitvee 17-0 agter. Terugvegpogings het tot en met halftyd geduur waar die telling op 17-15 vir Hoërskool Centurion gestaan het.

Die Vossies het gou na halftyd agter die doellyn gaan kuier wat hulle 20-17 voor laat loop het. Na ‘n baie moeilike terugvegslag en so paar noue ontkomings, het Ben Voster op die ou einde met 33-25 gewen.

Onverskrokke Plasie-praters stel hul saak Op 26 en 27 Februarie het 23 redenaars van Hoërskool Merensky mekaar die woordstryd aangesê in ‘n poging om die ATKV-uitdunrondte op 25 April te haal.

Die seniors was eerste aan die beurt met ‘n volle dosyn praters. Deelnemers in die voorbereide afdeling, Duné Steyn, Kayla Gaigher, Liza-Ri Snyman, Lisa Maguire, Manica van Schalkwyk, Mariesa Schutte en Amelda Pretorius het die temas: Navigeer, Magnete en Toue op kreatiewe wyse omvorm tot standpunte.

Onverskrokke het Stefan en Suandrie Corbett, Jamie Robertson en Armand de Beer binne ‘n uur hul onvoorbereide toesprake oor die onderwys sisteem aan die gehoor voorgehou.

Die beoordelaars, mee. Chantelle du Toit, Fransie le Roux en mnr. Clinton Gerber het aangekondig dat Liza-Ri Snyman, Manica van Schalkwyk, Mariesa Schutte en Amelda Pretorius deurdring na die eerste rondte. Al 4 die onvoorbereide deelnemers dring ook deur.

Die juniors was eweneens lus vir monduitspoel. Bekwame beoordelaars, me. Christelle le Roux, Hannelie Schoonraad en Trudie Botha het elke woord van die temas: Waarheid, Beelde en Deure fyn beluister.

Deelnemers aan die voorbereide toesprake was Keynan Fox, Zoë Malherbe, Waldo de Kock en Anke Fourie. Al 4 sal sake in die eerste rondte by PHS gaan uitspook.

In die onvoorbereide afdeling het Desi de Jager, Michelle Robertson, Johan van den Heever, Lané Kasselman en Anje Swanepoel binne 60 minute daarin geslaag om te redeneer rondom die onderwerp: Weet mense wat hulle

eet en drink? Geluk aan Desi, Michelle, Johan en Anje wat die Plasies gaan verteenwoordig.

Tydens pouse word leerders vermaak deur talent uit hul eie geledere.

Meksikaanse dansers het hul interhoër-passies en manewales op die grasvierkant uitgehaal, waarna die geleentheid behoorlik vlam gevat het. Kitaarspeler, Jaco

van Staden, is ‘n ou bekende en kán die snare behoorlik tokkel, maar dat die jongman kan sing ook, was ‘n welkome verrassing.

Skiewies, Tamryn Bosch en Tylor en Simoné Nel, het ‘n dansitem gelewer. Verliza Fox en Manica van Schalkwyk het albei bewys dat hulle stemme het om mee rekening te hou. Sanel Botha het gedans, waarna die program afgesluit is met ‘n duet deur Kesia Pohl en Danzi Ivy. Kunstenaars staan tou om hul talente by hierdie kwartaallikse optrede ten toon te stel.

Verseker ‘n “Keeper” Drie van Hoërskool Merensky se senior hokkie-doelwagters het die naweek van 2 Maart ‘n kliniek in Witbank bygewoon wat deur mnr. Simon Mason aangebied is.

Mason is ‘n gesoute doelwagter. Hy het vir Engeland in meer as 200 wedstryde gespeel.

Hy het in verskeie wêreldbeker wedstryde en 3 Olimpiese Spele sy merk gemaak. Tans

is hy betrokke by die Internasionale Hokkie Federasie en is ook ‘n bekende hokkie tv-aanbieder.

Dewald Haagner, Jamie Robertson en Janke Basson het saam met afrigter, Elri Verster, die naweek tegnieke en vaardighede geëet en geslaap en droom nou van ‘n wen seisoen wat voorlê.

Gordon het in 2016 laas aan die Cape Epic deelgeneem met spanmaat, Gordon Gilbert, en saam het die paar die merkwaardige prestasie behaal om in die top 25 uit die groep van nagenoeg 600 spanne te eindig. Die Absa Cape Epic lok jaarliks die beste internasionale bergfietsryers na die Kaap toe en Gordon sien uit om met die bekendes soos Nino Schurter skouers te vryf. Bulletin het met Gordon gaan gesels oor sy nuwe spanmaat vir hierdie jaar se Epic. Lees gerus in volgende week se uitgawe die volledige onderhoud waar daar dan die naam van sy spanmaat bekend gemaak sal word.
