It has been a year since Bulletin first reported on the amazing 82-year old Anna who has been tilling the soil on the vacant plot next to Agatha Road for more than a decade. Last year she had a bumper peanut crop, but suffered great losses to her mielies because of insufficient rain. This year, Anna is smiling because her mielies are standing tall and the rain seems to have come at just the right time.

Like most subsistence farmers however, Anna is by no means dependant on the municipalities to ensure her crop and therefore is not affected by the current electrical crisis. She does, however, share a common nuisance with the large scale agriculturalists of the area monkeys. “Kan baas nie vir my die crickets (crackers) kry by die shop nie? Ek wil daai monkeys jaag wat my plante breek.”

Dozens of protesters formerly employed by Selema Cleaning Services in Nkowankowa and Lenyenye were described as Respondent Unknown” in the court papers which were submitted to the Polokwane High Court last Thursday by the GTM. The Polokwane High Court declared the protests as unlawful and perpetrators were liable for costs in case they oppose the decision.

This follows the unrest that rocked the local council last Wednesday and Thursday when Empowered Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers contracted to Selema Cleaning Services, stormed the municipality in Tzaneen and demanded to get their jobs back. It was after they protested in Lenyenye and Nkowankowa for a week after their employer left without paying them their December salaries.

the GTM offices in Tzaneen, Nkowankowa and Lenyenye satellite offices. Do not damage property belonging to the municipality, not to intimidate workers, should notify all the mob about the decision of the court.”

Judge Semeya finally ruled that the activities of the protesters were unlawful and they should refrain from those activities as soon as possible.

After the ruling, protests stopped and workers were allowed to work for the time being.

News is that the contractor who was removed from Tzaneen last year, Molebogeng Cleaning Services (MCS), has now been hired to clean the streets of Lenyenye to replace Selema whose contract expired in December last year. Ironically when MCS was removed in Tzaneen, it left dozens of workers stranded until COSATU intervened and a decision was taken that they would be reinstated.

When they clashed with the police, the group then decided to take their war to the Civic Centre in Tzaneen town.

On Thursday last week, the municipality successfully obtained a court order against the protesters and they were prohibited from protesting in front of the council buildings and other adjacent areas. The respondents were given until the 26th of March to oppose the court application – of which if they lost they would have to pay the costs.

Just a day after state President Cyril Ramaphosa promised the people of Giyani that a dam would be built for them in order to end the drought in their faucets, a six year old child died after drowning in a trench at construction site abandoned by Khato Civlis two years prior. The engineering firm was appointed to sink boreholes in the area at the time. The tragedy occurred at Homu 14B in Giyani.

Ramaphosa made the announcement during the manifesto launch of the ANC at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban. After proclaiming that the government had built 4.7 million houses and that before 1994, many villages were dark and now they have electricity, added that the other problems including water would be attended to. He spoke briefly in Xitsonga (the language commonly spoken in Giyani) before turning to English.

The Nandoni-Giyani Bulk Water Reticulation Project was contracted to Khato Civils until the National Department of Water and Sanitation took over recently. It is at the centre of a R3 billion scandal which attracted the attention of various law enforcement agencies. Initially the project was to be a R500 000 tender, but was inflated to R2 billion and later to R3 billion. Yet Giyani still has no water.

The project was initiated after a visit to Giyani by former president Jacob Zuma back in 2013. When Cassel Mathale was deposed as the Limpopo Premier, the project was handed to Nomvula Mokonyane who was then the Water and Sanitation Minister. Lepelle Northern Water was handed the ropes to run the project.

Since its inception, the project has been riddled with scandals including the boyfriend of the Minister responsible for the appointment of sub-contractors.

Early last year, the newly appointed Water and Sanitation Minister, Gugile Nkwinti, visited Mopani on a fact finding mission. He raised concerns about the amount of money used for the project while people still did not have water. He demanded explanations after it emerged that another billion was requested for the project to be completed. As a result the Na-

tional Department took control of the project.

In September last year during the debate on the Medium Term Budget Statement (MTBS), Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, answering questions from opposition parties, said the money that was lost during the implementation of the Nandoni-Giyani Bulk Water Reticulation project should be recovered. Towards the end of last year, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) filed papers at the North Gauteng High Court against Khato Civils to recover the money.

Meanwhile, the Home 14B family in Giyani are mourning after their child Nsuku Mhlongo (6), who went out to play with peers, fell into a hole and drowned. According to the father of the child, July Mhlongo, his son died on Saturday afternoon. He said that there are many trenches in the village and appealed to authorities to close the holes as tomorrow it could someone else’s child.

Police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said the police have opened an inquest into the matter. He added that the police will conduct a post mortem to determine the cause of death.

Mopani District Municipality (MDM) spokesperson Witness Tiva, said that they are going to contact the national office and will close all the holes which were abandoned by the contractors.

Five suspects now mysteriously unknown

The five employees of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) who were caught for their alleged involvement in the theft of copper cables, have still not been arrested. According to the police docket for CAS11/11/2018, this is because the suspects, are unknown.

We asked SAPS provincial spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, how this was possible, considering that the GTM themselves admitted that five of their own had been caught in connection with this very serious crime? In a statement shortly after the incident was reported in October last year, the spokesperson for the GTM, Neville Ndlala, told Bulletin that the five employees had been suspended with full pay pending the outcome of internal investigations. The GTM’s head of security then laid a criminal charge with the police a week later after pressure from this newspaper and the DA Constituency Head, Desiree van der Walt.

How then can the SAPS investigating officer still claim that the suspects are unknown? More confusing still is that a charge of “Theft General” is being investigated when theft of copper cable is considered an act of terrorism as it interferes

directly with infrastructure (as per the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015 which commenced on 1 June 2016). This despite the municipality claiming that they opened a case of malicious damage to property and attempted theft.

In summary; the five employees were caught on the 22nd of October 2018 at one of the GTM’s electrical power stations. The SAPS were allegedly summoned to the scene, yet upon their arrival they found that the copper cables were still inside the premises of the GTM and therefore surmised that because of this, there was not sufficient evidence to make any arrests.

However, when the municipality’s internal safety and security team investigated the scene, they discovered that the copper wires which had been removed from a transformer were placed in a hidden location on the premises where they found that the stripping and cutting was taking place.

Further investigations uncovered enough evidence to have the five employees suspended and a case of attempted theft and malicious damage to property opened with the SAPS. How did this charge change to “Theft General”?

Ngoepe stuck to his statement and said “I think whoever is having any information about the development on this case including the possible suspects, may submit such to the Investigating officer in Tzaneen Police Station.”

We also asked the Colonel to explain the process of investigations after a docket was opened.

He proceeded to lambaste this reporter for “attempting to interrogate him” and said that he only provides information and not evidence.

We tried to explain that information is exactly what the community is demanding considering that it has been nearly three months and the suspects have still not been arrested or charged.

“You are now crossing the line. I have answered your questions and you can use my first response. Your colleagues usually use the responses I give them,” Ngoepe said.

We then asked him to explain the logic behind not arresting the five suspects even though the charge is a very, very serious one. We also pushed to understand why the charge was registered as “Theft General”.

“The amendment of the charge is done by the

Prosecutor in court. This is the original charge,” he said. “Logic is evidence and it will given in court at the right time.”

We are left wondering how the case can ever make it to court if there are currently no suspects. A short while after we published our report over social media, we received a phone call from Ngoepe. “You see? I am taking you seriously, I have no received the docket and I am looking through it to see what the problem is. I will give further information after I have worked through this.”

At the time of going to print, this had still not happened and the agricultural community are left without answers as they continue to battle for financial survival. More on this matter in next week’s edition. Still no word from GTM bosses on the way forward The only sound more deafening than the persistent notification tone of the municipal electrical issues WhatsApp group, is the silence on the crisis from the office of the GTM’s Electrical Engineering Department. The Doomsday clock is counting down fast and it would appear as though the urgency of the matter is being felt only by those most affected – the GTM’s ratepayers.

A week ago Bulletin issued the municipality’s Communications Department with an urgent media inquiry into some very serious issues related to the current crisis. At the time of going to print on Wednesday (yesterday) afternoon, we had still not heard a single word in the form of a response from their spokesperson.

On Monday we sent Ndlala a reminder to respond urgently to our inquiry or the article will be published without their responses. He assured us that he was working on the matter and a reply would follow. The following day we again sent a reminder for him to respond, upon which he informed us that he is on leave for two weeks, but that a lady by the name of Patricia Muchabi would be able to assist. Needless to say, we tried in vain to reach her on her cellphone and alas, we still have no response.

To date, no member of the Bulletin editorial team has managed to meet the head of the Electrical Engineering Department, Sam Lelope, face to face for an interview on the matter. And it has not been for a lack of trying either. One

would assume that the head of the department tasked with the maintenance, upgrading and general running of the electrical infrastructure would meet with their clients regularly to assess his department’s progress and shortcomings. Were it not for regular correspondence from the office of the new Municipal Manager, Thapelo Matlala, it is doubtful that there would have been any communication.

Over the course of the last two years the situation has deteriorated to the point where some farmers and plot dwellers consider themselves fortunate to have uninterrupted electricity supply to their homes for longer than a few hours per day – a service that they are still required to pay for. Transformers are not being sent in for repairs timeously, auto-reclosers that were ordered have not yet been installed, cases of copper theft are not being followed up and technicians are being paid exorbitant overtime to conduct repairs when outages are reported over the WhatsApp groups.

The communities of Letsitele, Haenertsburg, Georges Valley, Tzaneen and Agatha are at their wits’ end. Trying to claim damages from the GTM for loss of pumps, motors or household appliances as per instruction from the municipality have in reported instances amounted to nought. Planning for the irrigation, spraying and harvesting of crops has become a nightmare and trying to manage a farm or a packhouse even more so.

A weekend with almost no electricity in the Kloof This weekend was a total disaster as far as electricity availability was concerned in the Haenertsburg/Magoebaskloof area. The power went off at 02:00 on Saturday morning and was only restored at 20:00 that evening. As if this wasn’t bad enough, residents and farmers woke up to no electricity on Sunday morning. It was only restored by mid afternoon.

On both occasions there was no wind, no rain and no inclement weather that usually starts off the power cuts. When complaints went out onto the Whatsapp groups, the GTM standard reply was “Noted.” No one was informed of the actual problem.

Restaurants that don’t have generators were seriously affected. The card machine wouldn’t work, the village ATM wouldn’t work and tourists left because they didn’t have cash on them. Everyone’s livelihood is affected by these constant power cuts.

An elderly resident living on one of the nearby small holdings spoke about the effect the power cuts are having on her.

“I was at a farewell party in the village on Friday night. I returned home at midnight and had some work to do on the internet. At 02:00 the power went off on this quiet and still night.

Not being able to work, I slipped into bed and slept. When I awoke at 08:00 there was still no

power. Outside the village, homes rely on borehole water. Hence when the electricity is off, so is the water. This means no showering or bathing and no water to wash dishes.

“I left home and went to the village. Lekwar was in darkness with candles. They do not have a generator as it’s a costly business buying one and equally costly to fill the generator and see that it’s serviced.

“When power was restored at 8pm, I drove home. I didn’t think to charge any appliances as I falsely believed there’d be no further power cuts for the weekend.

“Wrong! I awoke on Sunday morning to no power. This time both cellphone and laptop were flat. Other than hoping the village had power and having to drive there, I faced a dismal Sunday. The food in the fridge and freezer had gone off and had to be thrown away. Living on a tight budget, this is the last thing anyone needs.

“The village too had no power. To date the GTM hasn’t explained the weekend power cuts. When and how will the situation return to normal? Hundreds of litchis went rotten in the fridges on one farm. Ratepayers, who have generators, are forking out many hundreds of rand to supply their generators with fuel. On top of this Eskom has announced price increases. Why when ratepayers don’t get any decent service?”

Farmers are losing millions, businesses thousands and households enough to affect the general wellbeing of the entire community.

School children struggle to do their homework assignments and mothers caring for new-borns face a host of potentially disastrous challenges.

Yet the municipal electrical bills keep sliding in under the door at month end. And still Lelope remains mum. A very reliable source has also reported that Lelope intends on prohibiting his technicians from being active members on these WhatsApp Groups which he himself refuses to be added onto.

We have again sent in our inquiry to the mu-

nicipality and this time we have requested that Matlala also has a look at the questions in the hopes of forcing a response from them. We will also be meeting with a number of affected farmers next week to accurately relay the frustrations to higher authorities as even the national energy regulator, NERSA, seems to be a toothless watchdog. The DA Constituency Head, Desireé van der Walt has also issued our questions and a number of their own, to parliament to have the ministers provide the answers our local leadership seem to be avoiding.

Odine Moolman and her son Dennis are leaving the Haenertsburg area. Both spent most of their lives in this area and Dennis recently finished his matric at Merensky High School. Dennis, with his impeccable manners and willingness to help within the community, will be leaving for the UK where he is to join the British Army.

Odine, who works for a construction company in Tzaneen, is relocating to the Western Cape to work on a contract on the road and bridges between Hermanus and Stanford.

Odine was a valuable member of the community. With her training as a paramedic, police woman as well as search and rescue, she was at the forefront of all disasters and was on hand to lend medical aid as well as notifying relevant parties to help with whatever disaster needed to be tackled.

Although the community wishes Odine and Dennis all the best, they will leave a huge gap in Haenertsburg and will be sorely missed.

Driver prangs Mayor’s expensive Benz The official vehicle of the mayor of the Maruleng Local Municipality (MLM), Dipuo Thobejane, was written off after it was involved in car accident while being driven by her official mayoral driver. She was not in the vehicle at the time, and the driver was not on duty either. The accident happened somewhere near the Oaks on the 8th of January this year.

The driver, Pulane Sekgobela, is said to have crashed the Mercedes Benz GLE 400, worth more than R800 000, without the mayor’s knowledge during the holidays. Obviously, the driver has denied the accusations that he was on a personal trip with the official mayoral vehicle when he smashed into a red Ford Figo.

According to him, he had received a number of messages and a missed call from the mayor requesting him to collect her from a venue in Tzaneen. When he arrived at the venue however, he found that the mayor had already

made other arrangements and so he returned to the Oaks. He then alleged in an interview with national media, that he was attempting to overtake a red Ford Figo, but the vehicle swerved into his lane as he was passing and that is when the accident happened.

Thobejane refuted this version of the story and denied that she had ever requested to be collected on the day in question. She also said that her driver was not on duty at the time.

An internal investigation is now underway as many of the opposition parties have once again expressed their dissatisfaction with the manner in which the young mayor controls her municipality.

Before being elected as the mayor of the factionalized Maruleng Municipality, Thobejane worked as a waitress at a restaurant in The Oaks outside Hoedspruit. She matriculated in 2004 and has two children. When she was

appointed in 2016, it caused great divisions within the ruling party as many believed her to be incapable of leadership - which she has on numerous occasions proven justifiable.

Thobejane made the news last year when she defended the former municipal manager, Peter Lerole, after he was contracted for municipal cleaning services at a cost of R18 million without a tender. She also defended his salary increase without the approval of the council.

She was then accused by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) chief whip, Martin Lewele, of shielding Lethole from accounting to the council by blocking the sitting of the council.

When it was resolved by the council that the municipal manager be suspended, Thobejane allegedly told her driver (who now smashed the official German car) not to deliver the letter to Lethole.

Opposition parties also claimed that the rea-

son the mayor shielded the accounting officer, was due to the fact she was rewarding party members who took part in the national conference of the party which heralded Cyril Ramaphosa as the president of the ANC. Meanwhile in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality reports are that the post of the driver for the mayor Maripe Mangena, had been advertised. Unsurprisingly not in this publication which is still being unofficially officially boycotted.

The previous driver, Marothi Letsoalo, died last year after a short illness. Since then the mayor was driven by an acting official, a certain Mr Mkhari, who was the driver of the former mayor of the GTM Othaniel Mushwana.

Twenty pupils arrested during SAPS Roadshow About 20 pupils at Mabushe High School at Mhangweni village in the Maake area were arrested by the police last week on school opening day as part of the Tzaneen Cluster Police ‘Back to School’ campaign. The suspects were later released on warnings. However, two of the pupils were arrested for trespassing and are due to appear in court soon.

Spokesperson for the police in Tzaneen, Sergeant Yvonne Moyana, told the Far North Bulletin in an interview that this forms part of the police “Back to School Campaign” and it falls under crime prevention. She said the work of the police is not to arrest people only, but to prevent crime. She said that there is no crime called “Gangsterism” but the police had a responsibility to minimise the impact of gangsters within communities.

“The 20 pupils who were arrested at schools on the school opening day were taken to our offices where we lectured them on the dangers of crimes in the hope that they will refrain from such activities. We had arrested two minors after the headmaster of the school re-

ported that they forced their way into school premises despite the fact that they were expelled from that school.”

“As the South African Police Services (SAPS) we care about our communities. We, during the ongoing school campaigns, identify the needy children and together with the other stakeholders and donors donate school uniforms and sanitary pads to the affected students. We do not want to see children going to school without a uniform or without food hence we intervene.”

Moyana added that last year the police had donated school uniforms to 135 school children after they were identified as the needy.

She said the process is ongoing as during the course of the year they will launch the Safer Schools Programme where routine searches and crime awareness campaigns are conducted to make sure that children when they enter school premises are not in possession of weapons which could be dangerous to other learners.

Granny’s Grumbles - Remittance Men (final)

During the days of petrol rationing in Rhodesia, petrol coupons were like gold. Our monthly trips to the rationing office which, in the cases of small towns, were usually in a dingy little office in the District Commissioner’s building which would be manned by a retired civil servant or anybody old enough to have escaped call-up. Waiting in the queue was almost like a social outing.

I was usually one of the first to arrive having always been an early bird. However, on this particular day I was very late and it was almost mid-day before I found myself in the office. A narrow bench leaned against the one wall and opposite sat the officer at a table with two small drawers. The drawers held

the precious coupons and the table had two dog-eared books. The one had a list of every car available in Rhodesia and the average petrol consumption of same. The older the car the more coupons one was allowed so since our vehicle was nearly twenty years old we were fairly favoured. The other book was a log of every resident in the area and was filled in each month (by hand) after we had been given our allowance. A large map of our area was spread on the table and any newcomer who arrived was put through the normal interrogation. “How many vehicles? How old? In which farming block did you reside? Is your car used for pleasure” One wag answered by saying “No – the back seat’s too small”. After all the questions had been answered a length of string was produced and it was traversed along the roads on the map. Presumably there was some way of working out the mileage after measuring the string with a ruler and then checking the make and model of the vehicle because calculations were then done on a blotter.

The rationing officers might have been long in the tooth but they were wide awake in many other respects. A lady who lived in the Buffalo Downs area was complaining that she did not get enough coupons as she had to take her two children to school each day and the round trip was 30 miles. The gentleman raised his eyebrows and pointed out that her neighbour on the adjoining farm had told him that she was running a lift club for all the schoolchildren in that area. Not another word was said.

An elderly gent had just arrived – he was wearing the frayed safari suit which was al-

most a trademark of a remittance man. Since I was in my mid-twenties and it was a hot day I offered him my place on the bench. My suspicions had been correct – he swept off his battered old hat, kissed my hand and said “Thomas Glanville-Morgan at your service, madam”. The double-barrelled name gave him away immediately. He was a very chatty fellow and asked where we were farming and how long I had been in the area. It turned out that he was living in a Tribal Trust Land and since, to the best of my knowledge, no Europeans were allowed to own land there I was surprised. Turned out he was married to the chief’s daughter. According to him he had approached the chief some forty years previously to obtain permission to hunt in the area. Presumably some members of the chief’s family accompanied the hunter since the chief’s daughter then saved him from a leopard attack. He undid his safari jacket and showed me (and the rest of the people in the office) his scars. The chief had then insisted that he marry the daughter since she had saved his life. This story sounded like something out of a Hollywood movie but obviously it was old hat to many of those in the room who just rolled their eyes up to the ceiling. Anyway Mr Glanville-Morgan and his bride were deliriously happy – or so he said.

When I repeated the story to the family that evening my brother-in-law agreed that the chief had indeed insisted that Glanville-Morgan marry his daughter – and why not? Our hunter owned a Land-Rover, two large rifles and had a monthly income. Nobody in the tribe was likely to come up with lobola like that.

True indeed!

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church SHALOM. I received this message from the Revd. Allan Smith in Cape Town and thought it fitting as a message for this week; Are you hearing God? On Sunday thousands of Christians went to church and most of them did not hear God. The Hymns and prayers were beautiful, the sermons were lovely and well constructed – many of them for this coming week on the importance of baptism! They left, not quite sure what the Lord was saying or asking of them for this coming week. There was a millionaire with lots of money and was hoping that the Lord would speak to him about what he do with that money. He left frustrated. He was angry! Whose fault was it?

Christians often ask why God does not speak to them, as He had done in former day. When I hear such questions, it always makes me think of the Rabbi was asked how it could be that God often showed Himself to the people whereas nowadays nobody ever sees Him. The Rabbi replied: “Nowadays there is no longer anybody who can bow low enough.”

This answer hits the nail on the head. We are so captivated by and entangled in our own subjective consciousness that we have forgotten the age-old fact that God speaks chiefly through the ordinary, through dreams and visions and even donkeys.

A spiritual director discards the world of unconscious fantasies as useless illusions; some Christians puts his church and his Bible between himself and the voice of God: and the rational intellectual does not yet know that his “consciousness is not his total psyche”.

Unless we hear from God we are certain to repeat our past and see little success. Let us spend this week in prayer and fasting and trust the Lord to intervene.

Ses bring 10 medaljes terug Vossies vrees nie binneshuis Die Limpopo Leopards se binneshuise hokkiespanne het tussen die 13de en die 21ste Desember aan die Pro-series Binneshuise Nasionale Hokkietoernooi in Kaapstad deelgeneem. Die O/13-seuns het derde met ‘n bronsmedalje geëindig terwyl die O/14-meisies ‘n vyfde plek en die O/16-seuns en O/16-meisies elk ‘n vierde plek losgespeel het.

Tydens die Desember vakansie het ses Ben Vorster swemmers hul merk op die nasionale skole swemkampioenskappe op Ellispark gelos.

Een van die swemmers wat uitsonderlike uitslae behaal het was 16-jarige Ruan HanaczeckKrüger. Met nie minder nie as ses goue medaljes, en een silwer, verwerf Ruan die Senior Victor Ludorum titel tydens die Suid-Afrikaanse Skole Kampioenskappe en kwalifiseer hy vir die Suid-Afrikaanse Senior Nasionale Kampioenskappe.

Sy goue medaljes is verower in 50m en 100m borslag, 200m individuele wisselslag, 100m vlinderslag, 4x100m vryslag aflos en die 4x100m wisselslag aflos.

Ruan het ook van sy persoonlike beste tye

aangeteken tydens die kampioenskappe wat hom in ‘n baie goeie posisie plaas op papier, vir die opkomende senior nasionale kompetisie.

Erno Botha het ‘n fantastiese goud in die 100m rugslag item vir O/15 seuns losgeswem en later ‘n derde plek as deel van die Limpopo aflos-span in gepalm.

Marnus Krüger (14), Juan Meintjies (13), Nicola van Heyningen (16) en Kayla Olivier (15) het almal aan verskeie items tydens hierdie kampioenskappe deelgeneem en self ook goeie persoonlike beste tellings aangeteken.

Meintjies het vir sy eerste gala op hierdie ouderdomsgroepvlak ‘n welverdiende derde plek in die 50m vryslag ingepalm. Hul volledige uitslae is op ons webtuiste verkrygbaar.

James Vorster (Kaptein) het Limpopo se O/19-gholfspan tot ‘n algehele 3de plek by die jaarlikse Interprovinsiale Gholfkampioenskappe gelei. James en sy span het van dag een af veggees gewys om van die groter provinsies te laat les opsê en kan trots wees op hulle vertoning.

James het individueel 8ste uit 55 spelers geëindig.

Plasied to meet you It was a big “how-do-you-do” on day one at Merensky High School, when old met new during the traditional broom dance on Wednesday, the 9th of January.

This year, for the new “Scivvies”, pillows were added to the mix and they

were told to “arrive on your broom with your pillow-partner”.

The entire school enjoyed the resulting fun and games and gave their all on the dance floor before the academic reality kicked in on day two.

Daniel does it again Daniel Smit, a grade 10 swimmer from Merensky High School, started the new year on a high note.

During a biathlon meet in Mpumalanga on 12 January, he not only competed in the u17 category, but also set a new local and South African record with 2260 points (the previous record was 2225 points).

Daniel now qualifies to compete in the SA Championships to be held in Port Elizabeth later this year.

Daniel and Kagiso Hoaeane (grade 9) also competed at the SA School Summer Games on 10 to 13 December, at Ellispark in Johannesburg.

During this meet, Limpopo ended 5th in South Africa.

Badgers head up North On Saturday, the 1st of December 2018, teams Ubuntu (consisting of Casper Venter, David Pullinger, Danica Altenroxel and Reuben Middleton) and Tshanduko (Marthinus Maritz, Jarred Gosling, Llewellyn Rodgers and Heidi Katzke) of Stanford Lake College together with parents and the adventure staff embarked on a 4500 km journey to Mkushi, Zambia to compete in the 21 Adventure Challenge for Schools™.

Seven vehicles in total made the journey up North! After three full days of driving through Zimbabwe and Zambia, with challenging border posts, they arrived at the Ndubaluba Outdoor Centre in Zambia’s Central province roughly 300km North of Lusaka.

The race started at 5am on Wednesday, December 5 with a relay style XCO race (mountain biking). Later in the day teams had to complete various activities in and around the outdoor center such as raft building, archery, foot orienteering, rock climbing and much more. Both Stanford teams, Ubuntu and Thanduku, coped well with the day’s activities yet some found the day’s navigation a bit challenging.

On the morning of day two teams were transported 160km further North to Kundalila Falls for a day of running and water activities. The day consisted of a long run through rough, steep terrain and various activities in the Kundalila Falls gorge. The activities included rock climbing, abseiling, a rope traverse and problem solving activities. Both Stanford teams showed Zambia what they were made of, finishing in the top three teams. Team Tshanduko had a very good day and corrected their errors of day one.

Day three, the beginning of the Grand Challenge! Two days of unsupported hard racing.

Day three was by far the toughest day of the event. The day included roughly 50km mountain biking, 10km on foot (summiting Mt. Mumpu, Zambia’s highest free standing mountain), 10km of kayaking, all done by self-navigation.

Team Ubuntu made a large navigation error early on and fell more than 50 minutes behind the rest of the teams. This wasn’t good for team spirit but there was no other option as to try and catch up. Luckily due to the rough terrain and the tricky navigation all of the other teams got lost and Ubuntu managed to catch up.

After 12 hours of solid racing only three teams officially completed the day’s racing.

These teams included Stanford’s Ubuntu and Tshanduku as well as the local Chengelo team, Bobjan. Team Ubuntu came back to finish the day more than 50 minutes ahead of the second team!

That night after a cooking challenge with mopani worms, teams very happily crawled into their tents (in the middle of the Zambian bush!) for a well-deserved rest.

On the last day of the Grand Challenge as well as the event, teams started with foot orienteering with some kloofing activities in a small gorge below the camp. The next leg was mountain biking back to Mkushi. At the next check point the teams had to navigate through the local market to find specific items to complete the activity. After this the teams had a final 15km mountain bike sprint back to the finish line.

After four days of hard racing Tshanduku finished in third place - also winning the Gritt

Trophy for the way they handled themselves during the tough times of the race. Team Ubuntu won overall as well as the Grand Challenge.

On the way back to South Africa, the group stopped in Livingstone for a day of epic white-water rafting/kayaking on the Zambezi River followed by a sunset cruise on the upper section of the Zambezi.

The last day back in Zimbabwe was spent in the Matapos with a beautiful sunset – a fitting end to a wonderful journey.

Miné du Plessis ‘n Massa Larries het op Donderdag en Vrydag, 10 en 11 Januarie, deelgeneem aan die jaarlikse massa-atletiek. Tydens hierdie grootse byeenkoms word die Interhuisspanne – Rooibokke, Springbokke en Koedoes – bepaal. Die Larries was ware staatmakers, elkeen het sy of haar beste gegee ten spyte van die warm weersomstandighede. ‘n Hoogtepunt was verseker die Gr 1’s se wedlope.
