Shack fire threatens longstanding local business

A local business escaped serious damage to their premises after a haphazardly constructed shack caught fire on the evening of the 26th of September. The corrugated sheeting structure was used as a kiosk and was the subject of many complaints by the local businesses in the Plantation Street area of the old industrial district.

Not only were business owner upset about the placement of the structure – mere centimetres from an electrical supply box – but they were concerned about the obstruction of pedestrian traffic and obscuring the view of motor vehicles entering and exiting the intersection adjacent to it. Whichever street hawker the shack belonged to, sold food from the structure which was prepared on open flame.

Witnesses reported that the shack caught alight last Wednesday evening and was completely de-

stroyed before the Mopani District Fire Department arrived on the scene. The power was allegedly cut to the supply box which very nearly set alight itself. The owners of the business directly opposite this shack, were alerted by the fire department that their building was in danger. When they arrived on scene they were relieved that the fire had been extinguished.

This raises a few questions.

Why was shack erected on the corner of an intersection not a meter from an electrical supply box? How did the hawker obtain permission from the council to operate out of this shack and was there ever an inspection done by any of the four health inspectors employed by the GTM to ensure the enforcement of the Operational Health and Safety Act and the municipal bylaws?

As with all of our other articles, we have not been able to

reach Neville Ndlala for official comment on the matter from the GTM. We believe that at the time of going to print, he may have still been relishing the Swazi-sun along

with the rest of the GTM athletes who attended the Inter-Municipal Games in that country this week.

Medic falls to his death Young boy passes away A member of the SANDF died during a demonstration in Phalaborwa over the weekend. The 35-year old SA Military Health Service (SAMHS) sergeant died after falling from an Oryx helicopter during a hot extraction demonstration at 5 Recce military base outside Phalaborwa.

The demonstration formed part of a Special Forces Open Day celebration.

Hundreds of onlookers watched in horror as Sergeant Goodwill Kabelo Moagi, team leader of 7 Medical Battalion, fell to his death. “I was exiting the parking lot with my kids when I looked back at the helicopter and noticed something

fall from the aircraft,” said Anton Kellerman, “at first I thought it may have been a medic’s bag or something. Later I was told it was one of the soldiers.”

A formal investigation has been launched to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal incident,” said a statement from the SANDF. According to the defence force, the chief of the SANDF General Solly Shoke, Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the Secretary for Defence, Dr Sam Gulube all expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the fallen soldier.

Tzaneen mourns the tragic death of one of her beloved children after a high school pupil passed away over the weekend. Shaun-Dee Delport (15) was found deceased on Friday evening. The news of his passing broke that following morning with tributes pouring in from classmates, friends and family members.

Merensky High School, where Shaun-Dee attended class, have expressed their heartfelt condolences to the boy’s family. The circumstances surrounding his death have not been established despite malicious reports of bullying and other insensitive accusations circulating social media. Bulletin has, on good authority, discerned that

all of these reports are unfounded.

The messages being spread over WhatsApp and Facebook are insensitive, hurtful and in extremely poor taste.

Members of the community should do well to ignore these distasteful sensation seeking broadcasts and afford his grieving parents their right to mourn the loss of their son. Merensky High, his friends, family and this publication offer our sincerest condolences and pray that they find strength during this devastating time.

A memorial Service for ShaunDee will be held this Saturday, 6 October, in the Reformed Church at 12:00 in Kampersrus. May his soul rest in peace.

Where are the (four) GTM Health Inspectors?

The entrance to Tzaneen stinks. The putrid stench of decaying meat and raw sewerage becomes the filter through which the beauty of a tropical paradise is ruined as you enter the town from the R71. The careless actions of the hawkers occupying the parking lot of the condemned Letaba Boulevard building in Loop Street, and the inaction of the municipality, have mutilated this town.

Though these hawkers operate out of specially constructed hawker stalls and do allegedly have legal permits allowing them to trade there, there is no policing of the Operational Health and Safety Act, no enforcing of the municipal bylaws and no regular inspections. This despite the GTM currently employing no less than four health inspectors.

system. This is against the law though nothing is being done to stop this. Two years ago we conducted an interview with one of these hawkers who admitted on camera that they sell meals per plate from these stalls and that they do not pay any rent there.

The meat which includes chicken and beef, is cooked on gas stoves without any regulation health and safety gear in very unhygienic circumstances. According to the hawker we interviewed, her stall sells a plate of beef or chicken stew at R50 per portion to an average of between 20 and 50 customers per day. Her stall is one of eight make shift takeaways.

She explained that at the end of each working day they take the pots and cooking utensils to the storm water drains where they rinse away the fat and cooking oil before washing the pots and plates at the ablution blocks. Again, this is

not regulation practice.

None of the ladies who prepare the food wear gloves which expose them to the very real risk of dermatitis caused by the continuous handling of meat. There are also no specified cutting boards to prevent cross-contamination and the knives are not sheathed or properly stored when not in use as required by the OHS. More important are the foodborne illness outbreaks when food preparation is not tightly controlled from product contamination or lessthan-ideal site sanitation. When health inspectors walk into the kitchens of established restaurants and convenience shops, they demand to see the paperwork. Paperwork that includes PPE records, health testing results permits and employee training records. Without this paperwork the business owner will be issued a hefty fine – three of those and that business owner

could have his/her enterprise shut down indefinitely.

Why then are these health and safety rules not enforced among the street vendors who sell food to hundreds of people daily in clearly unhygienic environments? What would happen should one of the vendors sell contaminated food to their clients for just one morning? Will it take a serious gastroenteritis outbreak before the relevant municipal officials, or designated DA Ward Councillor for that specific ward, sit up and take notice?

At the time of going to print we were unable to reach the spokesperson of the GTM, Neville Ndlala, for comment, we will however endeavour to contact him in our quest to ensure audi alteram partem (both sides of the story).

The Mopani District Municipality’s (MDM) perpetual non-payment of their accounts to service providers such as Lepelle Northern Water Board is robbing residents within their various municipalities of essential services.

This according to the DA Shadow Minister for Public Service and Administration, Desiree van der Walt.

Two municipalities specifically, Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM) and Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality (BPM) which fall directly under the jurisdiction of the MDM, are in a dire state of disrepair and require drastic intervention to prevent these once thriving tourism destinations from becoming two more chapters in the South African book of miserable municipal failures.

This month alone, Modjadjiskloof residents suffered through weeks of water shortages and empty reservoirs without any clear explanations from their municipal officers or councillors. Electricity cuts and overflowing manholes covering streets in rivers of human waste have become common place. Bulletin contacted the GLM spokesperson, Lovers Maenetje, to gain clarity on the issue, but received no response.

Similarly, Phalaborwa’s faucets ran dry over

the weekend leaving many residents and businesses without running water during some of the highest temperatures recorded this year.

The water shortages seem to be married to electrical power outages which plagued this tiny community over the long weekend and extended all the way through to our deadline on Wednesday. Residents are fed up to the point that they have now resorted to sending their complaints directly to the presidential office hotline number 17737.

One resident from Phalaborwa town, George Hepburn has embarked on a campaign to speak to the Mayor of Phalaborwa, Puli Shayi, in person today. In the build up to this meeting he requested that residents of the town send him letters of their grievances, which he then compiled into a book. His plan is to hand over this book to the mayor.

Lack of service delivery has become such an everyday problem that residents from towns all over Limpopo have established ‘municipal issues groups’ over the social media channels such as Facebook, and WhatsApp messenger.

These groups exist solely to provide residents with platforms upon which they can publically report their problems and seek answers.

Though these groups offer some form of solace, it very rarely has any positive input from the authorities and can certainly not be viewed as solutions to the deep rooted issues that have led, and continue to do so, to the drastic decline of the infrastructure and service delivery bodies within them.

Bulletin contacted the spokesperson of the MDM, Witness Tiva who issued a statement pertaining to the water crisis. According to Tiva’s statement, Lepelle Northern Water reduced water supply to the Phalaborwa area by 30 percent on Monday.

“As the district municipality we are determined to ensure that we continue to service the debt we are having with Lepelle Northern Water. It is important to take note that as the district municipality we are doing our best to ensure that the historic debt is being settled as soon as possible.”

Upon scrutinizing his official statement, a logical deduction can be made that the district municipality has not been meeting its financial responsibilities to its service providers. This current situation is an exact replica of the situation a year ago which prompted the community to embark on a march to the offices of the BPM

Mayor where they handed over a memorandum of their grievances.

“As the district municipality we are saying that the Constitution of the republic has placed a legal obligation on us to realise people’s right to sufficient water, hence we are continuing to engage Lepelle Northern Water to find a long lasting solution. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the inconvenience caused by this unfortunate turn of events in the Ba-Phalaborwa municipal area. In addition, we are also giving the Ba-Phalaborwa Municiplaity support to encourage it to strengthen its revenue collections so that it can pay millions of rand owed to the district municipality,” Tiva added.

Tiva refused to divulge the actual amounts owed to Lepelle Northern Water, despite our best efforts to force transparency on the matter.

We have also not been able to reach the spokesperson for Lepelle and at the time of going to print have not received a response from the National spokesperson for the Department of Water and Sanitation, Sputnik Ratau, despite his offering us the reassurance that he will be looking into the matter.

Fuel price shatters all-time ‘price per litre’ barrier As the country celebrates Transport Month, motorists bore the brunt of a record high fuel price hike on Wednesday. The increase which saw the price of 95 unleaded breach the R17 per litre mark has sparked rumours of a possible increase in bus and taxi tariffs.

Rather paradoxically, Transport Month is intended to emphasise the importance of providing a safe, reliable and affordable public transport system. However, because of the continuous hikes in the petrol and diesel prices, the public transport system has become

more unsafe as taxi’s now operate at maximum capacity in their efforts to polish every penny.

Though the residents in the cities such as Johannesburg and Pretoria will take the punch square to the jaw, local commuters can expect to reel in the aftershock very soon. Bulletin has received reports already of commuters having to que at the taxi ranks an hour earlier than usual in order to make it to work on time.

Steel water pipes to curb illegal connections Nkakareng Rakgoale, Mopani District Municipality (MDM) executive mayor, has lashed out at councillors and community leaders for their silence over illegal water connections within their communities. These illegal connections cause damage to the infrastructure thus leaving the whole community without water for some days. Rakgoale was speaking during a press briefing on the side-lines of the Mopani Water Summit recently.

The regional water “Bosberaad” was held as a build up to the Limpopo Water and Sanitation conference set for October this year at a date still to be determined by the provincial office. The summits, according to the municipality, are aimed at finding solutions to water woes which have plagued communities in the

region for some time and they even resorted to taking to the streets in protest.

Mayor Rakgoale said “we need the community, in cases where people break pipes while illegally connecting water to their homes, to report these matters to their councillors. For example in Lenyenye people know the person who broke the pipe while connecting water but they are reluctant to name the person so he could be reported and a case be opened against him or her. The community should help authorities with evidence to apprehend perpetrators.”

Rakgoale said the challenge they face as the municipality is revenue collection which would be escalated to the maintenance of the existing infrastructure as some have aged over

time. “There are communities where water is available for a 24 hours for seven days and through engagements they indicated that they are ready to pay for the services which are rendered to them.”

“In this financial year we are going to bury a dedicated steel pipe from the Thabina Water Works plant right into the dams of Lenyenye township. These water shortages the residents experienced in the past was due to interruptions into the supply of water because people would break the pipes and connect water to the villages nearby,” added the Mayor in response to a question posed by Bulletin.

The mayor further said that the importance of the provincial water summit will be that municipalities will interact with each other on

the challenges they experience as well as the mechanisms which are applied to deal with some of the challenges the municipalities would be facing. She said though the backlog in water provision might still be high, inroads were made to alleviate the crisis in many villages in the district.

The water crisis faced by some communities in the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality and Modjadjiskloof would a thing of the past as the interruptions in water supply in places such as Mashishimale and Makhushane came to a halt after the municipality intervened. At Sekororo the long awaited water reticulation project has been completed and is expected to be launched in December.

This was the scene yesterday afternoon in downtown Tzaneen after it was reported that the GTM appointed a new contractor to handle refuse removal within the CBD. A reliable source within the municipality alleged that the new contractor terminated the employment of all the staff employed under the previous contract. These employees then, according to our source’s allegations, went on a rampage through the streets. We have not been able to confirm any of the facts within this news flash, but will contact the spokesperson for the GTM about the matter.

*LAY-BUYS 6 MONTHS - NO INTEREST

Pandemonium broke out in Magistrate Street near the police station in Lenyenye township after a pensioner who was trying to withdraw her money from an ATM, was left empty handed when a would-be helper fled after the money was withdrawn from the machine. The old lady who was collecting her monthly social grant broke into tears.

According to an eye witness, as it was normal pension pay-out time, the lady who resides in one of the rural villages around Lenyenye, was collecting the money at an ATM, when she asked a man nearby to assist her.

The unsuspecting granny called the young man to assist her. After the money was withdrawn however, the boy ran into the crowds and disappeared. The incident prompted community leaders in the area to issue an alert to the other pensioners who were to receive their

grants the following day.

Another resident has accused the victim of being negligent by allowing a stranger to assist instead of taking along members of their families to the ATM. “Seeing someone dressed in a uniform does not mean that person is holy or is a messiah especially where money is involved.“ Another resident, Errence Mabela advised ATM users should ask the security officers instead of just passengers.

The police could not be reached to confirm if a case was opened at their charge office which is just 200 meters from the scene of the robbery.

Residents have also alerted each other on the spate of crimes which are going to be motivated by the mango season now open to the public.

During this time people break into yards and farms to steal green mangoes which are sold to atchar factories for cash.

Have yourself a glass of Recce red Wine lovers, sit up and take notice of the first annual Round Table 96 Wine Auction to be held at Hotel@Tzaneen this Saturday evening. The event will feature former prisoner of war and Special Forces soldier, Wynand Du Toit, who will be sharing some of his wartime tales and offer an enticing insight into his time in captivity in Angola.

Wynand du Toit was born in 1958 and grew up on a wheat farm in the Western Cape. He joined the military on a permanent basis in 1977.

After obtaining his B. Mil Degree (Bachelor’s Degree in Military Science), he successfully underwent Special Forces selection and training. He became a seaborne operator at 4 Reconnaissance Regiment at Langebaan in the Cape from where he partook in several operations until he

was captured during a raid on the oilrich enclave of Cabinda, Angola.

After spending two-and-a-half years in solitary confinement in an Angolan prison, he was released during an elaborate prisoner swop in Maputo, Mozambique.

He retired from the military at age 31 with the rank of Lieutenant- Colonel.

His stint as an Executive Outcomes mercenary in Angola after the end of the border war, served him well to pick up his ties and connections with his previous opponents and captors.

He served as Chairman of the Kalkplato Farmers Association in Namibia, represented them as a Labour delegate at the Namibian Farmers Union. He was a member of the Gauteng Master Builders Association, and became the Vice-President of Congo Agriculture in the outset

of the farming expedition in the Republic of the Congo.

He is currently farming part time on his farm Belle Terre, in the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville).

Following Du Toit’s address to the attendees, a local classical band will provide entertainment during the auction.

The auction is based on an invitation basis that includes snack platters for the guests. The event is held in collaboration with Round Table Tzaneen 96, Round Table Paarl 44 and God’s Haven Care Centre for the elderly.

Seventy percent of the profit will go towards God’s Haven Care Centre for the elderly (NGO nr 054212) and the remaining 30 percent will be allocated to Heart NPO School for Disa-

bled Children.

38-years along the Kromdraai — One stop fresh flower shop Despite the summer flu and packing for a family camping trip to Namibia, Reneé van der Merwe made time for an interview about the family business outside Haenertsburg known as Kromdraai.

Kromdraai, the one stop fresh flower business, was started by Schalk Willem, known as SW, and his wife Bettie in 1980. Their son, also SW, entered the family business 15 years ago. SW had studied horticulture at Technikon Pretoria. Reneé met SW whilst studying tourism also at Pretoria Technikon. Originally from Rustenburg, Reneé’s parents have since moved to Port Elizabeth. Reneé and SW were married in 2008 and she too entered the Kromdraai business.

They now have two sons. The six

year old bears the family name of SW and the couple chose the unusual name of Reinhardt for their youngest child who’s three years old.

During Reneé’s time at Kromdraai a little shop has been added, the office has been expanded and the cooling chambers for the cut flowers have been enlarged.

The Kromdraai truck heads off to the Johannesburg market twice a week. The Kromdraai greenery is sold to the market and the truck returns with cut flowers from the market. Kromdraai grows 12 greenery varieties including leather leaf, asparagus fern, ruscus and the hot favourite penny gum. Kromdraai tried planting chrysanthemums but the winter cold didn’t make this a viable flower to cultivate in the area.

Kromdraai is situated some

10 kms from Haenertsburg towards Polokwane.

Reneé says that peonies are very popular but hard to get. The flower, loved by Prince Harry’s wife the Duchess of Sussex, is only available for three weeks of the year in South Africa from the end of October to the beginning of November. Available now are roses, lilies, carnations, gerberas, stocks and the king protea.

Kromdraai employs 110 staffers.

There are three ladies in the office – Reneé, Magda Dunn and Ruth Barnard. Esther Mangena is Reneé’s right hand lady who she brought with from her days of working at Savannah Mall in Polok-

wane. Reneé’s father-in-law still runs the farm, and the semi-retired mother-in-law still keeps her hand in by doing flower arrangements for weddings.

Reneé’s husband, SW, was not available for the interview as he is converting their pine plantations into avocado plantations. He’s already planted 5, 000 Hass avocados and there are more to come. The avos will be ready for picking in the next five years.

The electricity problems in the area caused a major loss for Kromdraai last month. Transformer sparks caused a

massive fire and a pine block burnt down. It was a windy day; the grass caught alight, then jumped over the firebreak and burnt the entire block.

One of the other reasons for venturing into avo farming is because the flower side is very labour intensive and avos aren’t as labour intensive.

Kromdraai does flower arrangements for Mina’s, Cheerio Gardens and Mac Country Venue. They supply florists in Tzaneen, Polokwane and further afield within the Limpopo area. They also sell to the public and the business is open from Mondays to Fridays 07:30 -16:00.

Granny’s Grumbles - Marriage

As a teenager I had a very good friend called Anne. In 1962 she married a very good-looking young man who most unfortunately had an extremely close relationship with the breweries. After nine years {and three children) she gave him an ultimatum – shape up or ship out. This was a fairly regular occurrence and would, generally speaking, keep him on the straight and narrow for a few weeks. However, hubby had decided to find somebody more in tune with his habits and promptly moved in with the local barmaid.

A little dorp is no place for two people who are separated and have a very acrimonious relationship, so Anne (who had no parents) decided to move back to her place of birth and get her children enrolled in her old primary school.

I lost touch with her for a while but was fairly shattered to hear that a year later she was involved with a young soldier. The man in question was only 22 years of age – Anne was 30 and had three children. The gossips had a field day – the young man’s parents were appalled – I was surprised!! I made a point of contacting her to find out what was going on – did the young man have honourable intentions?. In her own words “What the heck am I supposed to do – no parents – no maintenance payments as hubby has disappeared into the distant blue with his barmaid AND I don’t have a car” I decided to visit – the young man appeared enamoured, but Anne had no illusions about marriage as she could not see a rugby-playing, sports loving young man with a future ahead

of him settling down with an instant family.

Apparently she was wrong – when her divorce became final he proposed the same day –nothing romantic – just “When are we getting married “ Sven (for that was his name) had arranged that they should get married at the army chapel and then just carry on as per normal due to finances being somewhat strained.

However, their friends had other ideas and their next-door neighbours phoned to tell me that everybody was to bring their own drinks and snacks and we would make it into a festive occasion. I arrived early in the morning to assist with anything that needed to be done.

Anne was at the hairdresser and that was when the fun started. It transpired – when Sven was questioned – that he had not bought a wedding ring – in fact did not even seem to think it was necessary It turned out that at least three of the ladies present had a couple of wedding rings that had been inherited along the line and rushed off to find them. Sven – who obviously felt a bit embarrassed about the lack of a wedding ring – in spite of the fact that there had been no mention of an engagement ring – chose the smallest and most inconspicuous ring. In the meantime an intense cloud of smoke emanated from the kitchen. Evidently Anne’s two eldest sons only owned one decent pair of trousers each and they had been dirtied the previous day at a birthday party. Sven had washed them and since it was raining had put them into the oven to dry out – unfortunately they had been put under the grill and had become somewhat toasted. A friend rushed the two boys off to the local trading store and did the necessary.

During the wedding ceremony it became obvious that the “borrowed” wedding ring was too small for Anne’s finger and eventually the minister just indicated that it should be left to hang on the top joint and they should escape to the vestry.

Some months later I had the opportunity to visit Anne and the first thing I saw was an enormous vase of beautiful red roses. Since it had been obvious that Sven was not a romantic man (I had noticed she was still wearing the “borrowed” ring ) I was hesitant to ask from whence they came, but Anne couldn’t wait to tell me. Sven and she had had a terrific row the night before he left for a six week bush trip. The following afternoon a florists van arrived with the roses AND the most romantic note she had ever received. She was

over the moon and I immediately regretted the thoughts I had been harbouring about the insensitive and unromantic Sven.

At least six months later she phoned me and was angrier than I had ever imagined she could be – it transpired that the loving and romantic note she had received with the roses was actually conceived and written by some friend of Sven’s. In some moment of incredulous stupidity when she mentioned the romantic note that she had received months back, Sven had looked surprised and asked to see it. “Good Heavens – Tony went a bit over the top – I just asked him to organise some flowers and an apology”.

And so it went on………When their daughter was sixteen she (the daughter) had phoned me to tell me that her father had eventually bought her mom a wedding ring (seventeen years late) and given it to Anne on Christmas day. Twenty years later the wedding ring had become trapped on her finger due to arthritis. No problem said Sven who immediately got some side cutters and removed it.

Did he buy her another one? It appeared not in spite of the fact that Anne had left it rather obviously on his bedside table.

When their forty-fifth wedding anniversary happened along I was amazed that they were still together and told Anne so, basically insinuating that I would have given him the order of the boot years ago. She seemed quite surprised and said that he cooked so that made up for any other shortcomings. I knew that he cooked at braais and potjies, but according to Anne he cooked every night AND washed up afterwards. Really!!

I couldn’t wait to share this with my husband who informed me that all the men knew that Sven did the cooking and this was a source of amusement at the local pub.

According to Sven he had decided to do the cooking because Anne showed an unhealthy interest in females who poisoned their husbands and never missed an episode of Crime and Investigation.

I actually felt like a bit of a fool – Anne had always hated housework and presumably the fact that her husband was prepared to do the kitchen work more than made up for his insensitive and unromantic way of thinking - she knew what he was telling the bar flies and found it quite amusing There is more than one way to skin a cat ….and Anne had worked it out!!

The most important four words in a successful marriage - “I’ll do the dishes”

Anders as in Tomas en Marta se gedeeltes, is daar geen verwysing na geloof in hierdie gedeelte nie, maar geloof word in aksie gesien in Maria se totale oorgawe aan Jesus.

Wanneer Marta vir haar sê dat Jesus haar roep (11:28) dan staan sy met onmiddellike vertroue op en gaan na Hom toe. Sy erken wat sy weet: “As U hier was sou my broer nie gesterwe het nie!” maar terselfdertyd laat haar vertroue haar by Sy voete tot rus kom – dis geloof!

Jesus se reaksie op haar totale oorgawe word vir ons saamgevat in vers 35, die kortste versie in die Bybel: “Jesus het gehuil!”

Dit kondenseer vir my die drie gedeeltes oor geloof in Johannes 11, die van Tomas, Marta en Maria, tot wat Johannes aan die begin van sy evangelie skrywe: “So lief het God die wêreld gehad, dat Hy sy Eniggebore Seun gestuur het, sodat elkeen wat in Hom glo nie verlore sal gaan nie, maar die ewige Lewe sal hê.”

Kom met jou wankelende geloof, met jou gekneusde geloof, kom kniel voor Hom wat bereid is om saam met jou te huil.

Work continues after retirement Many people work after retirement and either stay in a related field or move into something completely different. Mark Geere (60) recently retired from Stevens Lumber Mills outside Haenertsburg. He’d been a silviculture and harvesting forester for 38 years. Born in Benoni, Mark did his four year diploma in Forestry at Saasveld College in George. He put himself through College and started at Woodbush in 1980, a Government organization, under the

leadership of Peet Reyneke who taught him the practical side of forestry. Mark paid his studies back over four years.

He worked for the Government for seven years during which time he met his wife Glynis and daughters, Tammy and Michelle.

Thereafter he joined Mondi Forest in 1987 where he worked in Haenertsburg and Makhado under the management team of Frank Terink and Keith Moldenhauer (a local resident on the Mountain), until 2000. He then joined Stevens Lumber Mills until his retirement in 2018.

With his background and thorough knowledge, Mark is now selling forestry and bush-

veld chemicals for Ecoguard.

Ecoguard products are specifically aimed at eradicating alien invasive species like bugweed, wattle, bramble, lantana, clover in lawns, sekel bos and other invasive species. The chemicals take effect over different periods of time. One example is Sabre or Starane chemical which can be sprayed over pine, blue gum, avos, and garden flowers as they only target bugweed Mark will also concentrate on farmers’ fence lines. Electric fences need to be effective to protect their crops and staff.

There are various kinds of chemicals available from Ecoguard and they target invasive species

and do not affect indigenous bush or wild life.

Mark’s markets are forestry and game farms from Bela Bela, Makhado to Hoedspruit.

Ecoguard supplies chemicals, knapsacks sprayers, spares and protective clothing. Ecoguard is a South African product with their head office in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal. Mark deals with the regional manager in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.

Dyes, in red, blue, yellow or black, are also used so that the farmers can see how far the workers have progressed.

Mark will advise farmers on all weed problematic areas and has been doing so for many years.

Local teachers taught to coach The renowned local swimming coach and owner of the Shamu Swimming club, Johan Grobbelaar, hosted a coaching clinic for school teachers on heritage day last month.

Teachers from Laerskool Phalaborwa, Unicorn and Laerskool Musina attended this clinic in Tzaneen which started at 10:00 that morning and concluded at 15:30 that

same afternoon.

Johan explained the four basic strokes namely freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. He concentrated on turns and starts

and tips on why and when a swimmer can be disqualified in a race.

The course concentrated on sticking to the basics for primary school and beginner swimmers rather than the more complicated strokes/kicks/turns of the senior club swimmers. Four of the local Shamu swimmers attended and provided attendees with examples of “how to” and “how not to”. Feedback received from attending teachers was very positive and everyone found the clinic worth insightful.

More of these clinics are planned for the foreseeable future in a bid to up the ante and improve the quality of local swimming talent.

Renzo, steady, go!

Hoërskool Ben Vorster spog met ‘n rugbyspeler uit die boonste rakke. Die kaptein van die Vossies se dodelike O/16A-span, Renzo du Plessis, is in die Limpopo Blou Bulle se 7’s span ingesluit wat verlede week aan die O/17 Interprovinsiale Sewes toernooi op Potchefstroom deelgeneem het. Saam met Du Plessis was twee van sy spanmaats, Sean Roulsten en Lennard Joubert asook buurman Danie Potgieter uit Hoërskool Merensky.

Na afloop van hierdie toernooi is Renzo af Paarl toe in die Wes-Kaap om aan

die Elite Player Development rugbyoefenkamp te gaan deelneem. Hy is die enigste speler in die Limpopo provinsie wat uitgenooi is om aan hierdie prestige program deel te neem.

Die oefenkamp strek vanaf 1-6 Oktober waar die Top 45 O/16-seuns in Suid-Afrika vir ‘n week bymekaar kom om spelers se vaardighede te evalueer en sodoende ‘n databasis van elke speler op te bou.

Nog Luiperds vir Tzaneen Ben Vorster het ook hul stokke in die binnenshuise arena laat raas toe die volgende Vossie-hokkiespelers, verkies is tot die PSI-Limpopo Luiperds Binnenshuise-hokkiespanne. Hierdie spanne sal

gedurende die 5de tot die 7de Oktober aan die All Stars-toernooi in Gauteng en gedurende die Desember-vakansie aan die PSI Nasionale Kampioenskappe in Kaapstad deelneem.
