R36 blocked by dead chickens and boulders The R36 was completely blocked off between Tzaneen and Burgersdorp on Monday by angry protestors demanding water and tarred roads in their villages. Hundreds of residents from Gavaza, Cukumetani, Rita, Mhangweni, Burgersdorp and Thlalampsa villages near Maake Plaza outside Lenyenye, took to the Lydenburg road on Monday morning. They proceeded to barricade it with large rocks, tree branches and all manner of debris for more than 10 kilometres in either direction.

Motorists travelling from Lydenburg to Tzaneen were forced to either circumvent Lenyenye or be escourted through the barricades by police vehicles. The protest was nothing new to the South African landscape and neither was the reason for it.

Community leader, Wayne Mkharhi, told Bulletin on the scene, that they are not satisfied with the slow motion of service delivery in the villages while the other places which had just been established recently have been provided with the among other services, a tarred road. He added that all attempts by community members to raise the issues with municipality always fell on deaf

ears. They say their ward councillor, Chris Makwala, does not listen to their complaints.

Another resident who requested anonymity said that everything was “smooth sailing” until the community had a meeting with GTM mayor, Maripe Mangena last week. It was during an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) forum where the community told Cllr Mangena that they wanted a tarred road connecting the villages of Mhangweni, Zangoma and Mafarana. “The mayor told us that there will be no tarred road in our area this financial year.”

This response by the GTM angered the residents and sparked the protest action. Residents said that people started gathering at street corners at midnight on Monday before organizing themselves into groups and moving to the road where they proceeded with the blockade. The most surprising act was the use of dead chickens to block the road.

When the Bulletin arrived at the scene, police were seen patrolling the area and assisting residents of Ofcolaco, Har-

mony block and Trichardsdal to access the road so they could reach their homes in the farmlands. Other police vehicles were parked at the entrance of Maake Plaza directing people to use other roads. Vehicles were turning and using the Julesburg road before it re-joined the R36 at the Ofcolaco-Julesburg crossing.

According to community members in the area the protest was peaceful as no car was damaged or arrests effected. After the mayor visited the scene, on Monday morning just after 09:00, an agreement was reached that the demands by the community should be redrafted and submitted to the municipality within 14 days. Residents said the mayor had promised them that their grievances would be looked into. The memorandum was submitted to the GTM offices that same day.

In the final meeting which Bulletin attended, residents resolved to hold another meeting this coming Sunday at a central place to accommodate all the villagers to discuss the way forward. It was determined that political parties should not be allowed to hijack the meeting for their own benefits.

It was also decided that the ward councillor, Chris Makwala, should be invited so he could be told by the community that they have had enough of his procrastination.

The IDP representative Forum last Friday coincided with the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) water summit aimed at putting water challenges in the district into perspective. This summit came at a time where the Khujwana bulk water reticulation project grinded to a halt just two days after it commenced. The machinery meant for this project is still in the village.

Dam wall no further to completion The Tzaneen dam wall construction is at a standstill. Since that time, four years past until a contractor, Blackhead Construction, was finally appointed to start work on the implementation phase of the project.

According to information we received, progress on the project was delayed by a difference of opinion between the former Minister of Water Affairs and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane who said that outside contractors had to be used for the project and not the department resources. Mokonyane has since been moved out of her position into the communications department. It is the view of the DA and various other political commentators that she was directly responsible for steering the Department into bankruptcy.

The newly appointed Minister of Water Affairs and Sanitation, Gugile Nkwinti, in contrast, is of the opinion that department itself should handle the construction to complete the project. He has reportedly given the go ahead for department resources to be used to complete the job.

The Department of Water and Sanitation announced that the cautious demolitions on the wall spillway were expected to begin in the last week of August 2016, but the contractor started site establishment on the 15th of that same month. The demolitions were expected to be completed in the last week of January 2017.

The Spring Festival kicks off The Haenertsburg/Magoebaskloof Spring Festival kicked off with a bang over the weekend. Haenertsburg had craft gins, South African wines, African beadwork, clothing, jewellery, flowers, art, many food stalls and live music.

The craft gins were a huge draw card. Not only were the various gins ever so tasty but the labeling on some of the bottles was exquisitely designed. The Flowstone gins, produced in the Cradle of Mankind, employed a famous botanist to draw their visuals and offered Wild Cucumber, Marula and Bushwillow gins. Local Mark Dando has extended his yummy range of gins and his labels depicted the main ingredient in the gins.

Radiant Esther Humphries sold branded wine glasses to customers wanting to sample the many wines.

Artist Renier Oosthuizen sold paintings at both the Haenertsburg Hall as well as at the Hotel. He sold a staggering 27 paintings.

Hayley and Warrick Dawson of Barefoot Breeze and Juanne Steenkamp provided live music.

The SPCA stall at the Pennefather complex sold out its second hand stock within 24 hours. A customer arrived with his bakkie, asked how much for everything on the table as he owns a second hand shop, and took the lot for R2, 000.00.

Laurie and Erie Railton, long time in the nursery business, sold azaleas in bloom like hot cakes. There were also air plant and succulent stalls.

Many people brought their dogs and all were well behaved and had a fun time.

Although the Haenertsburg side of the festival is now closed the Hotel will continue displaying its wares until this weekend. The atmosphere at the Hotel was festive with emphasis on crafts and a food section at the back of the Hotel hall. Renier Oosthuizen’s paintings will still be on display there. R16 000 per meter for drilling The Mopani District Municipality has recently appointed a contractor to drill a horizontal shaft beneath a section of the R36 road at the entrance to Phalaborwa town.

This is so that a 600mm pipe can

be extended from the one end of the road to the other as part of the sewerage reticulation system upgrades which have allegedly been ongoing since 2009.

We contacted the contractor and

Villagers went on to say that the water truck system where the same people are the beneficiaries time and again is the main source of water woes in the villages in Mopani district. It is said in some instances the same truck drivers sell water to the community members. Pensioners are the most affected as they cannot push wheel barrows.

Attempts to obtain comment from the district municipality was not possible barring responses such as “we will send you details”. In Mopani two senior employees have since been arrested and subsequently suspended from their responsibilities after they inflated the prices of boreholes. It is reported that the two officials were allegedly charging the municipality about R2 million a borehole and the municipality footed the bill to contractors.

According to the infrastructure report of the MDM which oversees five municipalities including Maruleng, GTM, Letaba, Giyani and Ba-Phalaborwa the municipality had not budgeted anything to supply residents of Mhanghweni with bulk water supply.

In the 2017/18 fiscal year, the district municipality received R444 million from the Municipal Infrastructural Grant (MIG) and so far 92% of that has been used with the roll out amount standing at R33 million.

The report went further detailing that in the Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG) the figure for the 2017/18 year the MDM received just R95 million and 87% had been used. On boreholes so far this year, 1 124 boreholes were sunk with 619 operating, 326 not working, 100 vandalised and 80 were decommissioned.

And according to the report the following were noted challenges: vandalism and theft of water infrastructure, boreholes, transformers and electrical cables. Other challenges included insufficient budget for infrastructure consultation and the uncoordinated new settlements. It is recommended that there be community awareness, engagement of the Treasury through Coghsta to increase the money and have traditional leaders working closely with councillors.

Spokesperson for the Mopani District Municipality, Witness Tiva said he would investigate the matter. And requested an official media inquiry to be emailed to his office in order for him to respond.

asked how much he charged for the drilling of this shaft to which he said R16 000 per meter. This is excluding a daily rate for having the equipment on site. The contractor has reportedly been on site for close on a month already and still the shaft has not been completed.

We have also contacted the spokesperson for the Mopani District Municipality, the water services authority responsible for the project, and will send him an official inquiry on the costs and the details of the project. It is believed that it would have been far more cost effective for the MDM to employ the use of picks and shovels to dig a trench across the road, bury the new pipe and cover it up again afterward. This will hopefully also be clarified upon receipt of the answers to our inquiry.

The Message

Granny’s Grumbles - Unrequited Love

Way back in the 19th century many unmarried aunts spent their years living with relatives due to unrequited love. If you came from a well-to-do family you didn’t have many choices – due to class distinctions you had few suitors to choose from and if the one you did fancy jilted you, the embarrassment was so acute that you spent your remaining years taking care of nieces and nephews and being an unpaid housekeeper for your brother and/or sister.

Some fifty years ago there was a chemist who lived in our small dorp. – his name was

Courtney and he was a truly grumpy man.

According to the local gossips this was due to his being jilted by his fiancée many years back. Since he was the only chemist for seventy miles we were a bit stuck. Due possibly to the fact that he suffered from hangovers he regularly made mistakes which were often amusing and other times downright dangerous. Our neighbour from the adjoining farm went to see the doctor as he was suffering from a bad dose of flu and sinus. He was given a prescription and went off to Courtney to have it filled. He asked if he could also get his wife’s birth-control tablets which were on repeat. When he came to pay, it transpired that he was short of a small amount. Now Courtney did not trust anybody and only handled cash, so therefore our neighbour decided that his flu medication was more important and subsequently left with one small bottle of tablets.

After a week of tablets he felt no better and in fact was vomiting every morning so he returned to the doctor. It was decided that Julian must be allergic to the tablets so the doctor prescribed some other medication.

When he went to get his prescription and also pick up his wife’s tablets it came to light that Courtney had in fact given Julian the wife’s tablets the previous week although he had indicated that they were in fact for Julian and they had Julian’s name on the bottle. In those days virtually all medication came in little brown glass bottles so Julian had been taking birth control tablets for a week. He was beside himself and quite sure that he would now be infertile. Of course the wags at the pub thought it hysterically funny. Fortunately Julian ended up with two children within

the next four years so obviously his fertility was not affected.

Now for our second relationship problem.

I met Mabel in 1982 when she was well into her seventies. She lived in the same retirement village as my mother-in-law and was a very nice lady - tall and fit, but had never married. I was surprised and said so to my mother-in-law who told me that Mabel had been jilted just two weeks before the wedding date. At that time she was only 19, but evidently it had hit her so hard that she never allowed herself to get involved with any man from then on. She came from a large family who had all produced many children and from all accounts the nephews and nieces loved Auntie Mabel so much that they were there every weekend and since they all came from farming backgrounds, she was never short of vegetables, meat or milk. She had worked for the same supermarket chain for 40 years so had a reasonable income and appeared quite happy. Not so according to my mother-in-law – Mabel often talked of Boet and the good life they could have had together. One Sunday we made our normal weekly call to mom-in-law who couldn’t wait to tell us the news – Mabel had been taken to Johannesburg General for a cataract operation and had seen Boet.

All the pensioners were in an enormous waiting room and Mabel had heard Boet’s name called out by a nurse so she looked up.

In her own words “Really – I had a lucky escape – he must weigh 500lbs and can hardly breathe – still smoking – AND in a wheelchair”. Boet was never mentioned again but I thought how sad it was that she had carried a torch for him for nearly sixty years.

We are in the season of Spring, having survived Autumn and Winter, perhaps we are eagerly awaiting the onset of Summer? We never know what each season will bring. With climate changes our days can vary from very warm to very cold and anything in between. These are external factors that affect us, we also experience internal factors which will sometimes be rather harsh. We sometimes need to fight off illness of some sort. Therefore, we can rightly say that both external and internal factors influence our lives.

We tend to experience these same factors in our spiritual life: From birth till teens one could consider as “Spring” when we are moulded into our own beings, our formative years. Unless we are taught the basic of life, both, materialistic and spiritual, we have little chance of becoming what Christ wants of us. (Yet this can change in later life as well.) Teenage to adulthood can be seen as “Summer” when we put into practice what we have been taught, hopefully, but it is also the time when we test things out, many turn away from what they are taught, especially from religion, believing that there are more interesting things out there in the world. This could be blamed on the principals they were taught when they were still very young, or it could be because of peer pressure. They often leave the church during this period. Adulthood to old age: could be seen as “Autumn” when things become clearer and sometimes, unfortunately, mundane. There is often little if any growth during this period. We fall into complacency, where we do little and sometimes stagnate. Old age can be seen as “Winter” when we come to the realization that we have little time left, so we either accept the inevitable, or we tend to become over active.

Yet, during all these seasons one thing never changes and that is the fact that Christ has never left our side, He loves us no matter what and is always there to turn to. He listens to us, not like some of our friends with only half an ear, but gives us His full attention. Yet, He has given us the choice; either accept Him or reject Him. To accept Him we are ascertain of “Eternal Life”/ life after death. To reject Him is certain death and no hope of anything more.

So believe and grow in your seasons of life, grow in Christ!

DA speeds up campaigning

Ghosts of the past On the 20th of September (last week Thursday) the Letaba Sheriff of the court, Tertius Robertson made yet another visit to the white house.

During 2017 the sheriff made near-weekly visits to attach and remove property for debt owed to creditors by the GTM. Under the watchful eye of the new municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala however, the regular visits seem to have come to an end.

Last week however, the visit came during the early morning hours thanks to a court order dating back to July 2017. Robertson attached electronics and computer equipment as well as three municipal vehicles. The order was for R160 000.

Plaasjapies het die naweek behoorlik gespeel op Ryno en Cindy Eloff se plaas net anderkant Letsitele. ‘n Groep mammas het hul laaities en so bietjie verversings in die kar gelaai en die bosse ingevaar vir so happie avontuur vir die naweek.

Saterdagmiddag omstreeks 15:00 het die mammas en hul kleinspan tente opgeslaan en reggemaak vir ‘n heerlike staproete deur die veld. Elkeen van hulle het ‘n verassingspakkie ontvang en heerlike eetgoed vir die toer.

Aan die einde van die staptog het hulle tyd saam met die perde spandeer voor Doereen Lemmer, die bekende sielkundige, ‘n voorlegging vir die mammas oor verskeie aspekte van hul kinders se ontwikkeling voorgelê het. Die seuns het intussen die braaivure aangesteek en vir hul ma’s iets lekker oor die kole gegooi.

Die aand is op die gepaste manier met stories langs die kampvuur afgesluit.

Sondagoggend vroeg het die seuns hul ma’s in ‘n poeierverf geveg aangevat (die uitslae van die geveg is nog onder bespiegeling, maar die seuns staan vol hulle het die oorhand gehad). Die kleuroorlog is gevolg deur ‘n gesigverf sessie vir beide ma

en seun voordat die hele groep die modderigge hindernisbaan aangevat het.

Die Plaasjapie kamp is ‘n initiatief deur Cindy Eloff om kinders meer aktief te kry. Eloff glo vas in die ou gesegde dat ‘n vuil kind, ‘n gelukkige kind is en sy hou vol dat kampe soos dié ‘n merwaardige verskil in die lewens van die jongspan – en hul mammas – kan meebring. Hoërskool Merensky se interhuis swemgala het op Maandag, 10 September, onder luide toejuiging plaasgevind.

Al vier die huise (Ventus, Terra, Ignis en Aqua) was goed verteenwoordig in en om die water. Daniel Smit (graad 9) en Marc Wigginton (graad 12) het rekords verbeter in die 100m vryslag- en 100m rugslag items.

Hierdie jaar het die leerkragte die uitvoerende komitee uitgedaag vir ‘n aflossessie. ‘n Klop op die skouer vir die onderwysers wat in Chad le Clos-styl geseëvier het.

Die “tjoepie”-resies in huisverband was ‘n hoogtepunt, wat gesorg het vir vet waterpret. ‘n Week later het die Plasie-swemspan in die bloedigwarm Musina sake in die interhoër swemgala uitgespook.

Amelia Booth, graad 8, het bewys dat swem vir haar net so maklik gebeur as langafstand hardloop. Sy verwerf 4 goud (vir die 200m individuele wisselslag, 50m vryslag, 100m rugslag en 50m vlinderslag) en 1 silwer medalje, en hiermee die titel Junior Victrix Ludorum. Kagiso Hoaene het ook ‘n goue medalje met die 50m borsslag ingepalm.

Merensky se junior aflosspanne het ook puik presteer met die o.14 dogters en die o.15 seuns wat hul onderskeie 4 x 50m wisselslagaflosse gewen het.

Altesaam 39 medaljes (5 goud, 15 silwer en 19 brons) keer saam met die Plasies huis toe. Merensky is trots daarop om hierdie jaar as naaswenners van ses skole uit die stryd te tree.

The great Mooketsi Challenge accepted Alan Gordon (28) raked in his second consecutive win this weekend when he crossed the 70km line at the Mooketsi MTB Challenge in a time of 3:05:20. This was the eighth instalment of the popular cycling challenge which caters for the avid mountain biker over three distances including the 10km, 40km and 70km routes.

Despite Gordon’s winning time being eight minutes slower than his time of 2:57:00 recorded at last year’s event, he was still an impressive 14 minutes faster than the second placed rider, Francois Theron (30) who crossed the finish in 3:19:24. Bill Noel (43) took third place in a time of 3:26:39 which also secured him the first place on the Veteran Men podium.

In the ladies 70km event it was Claudia Slattery (34) who took first place in a time of 4:03:19 and Theresia Lessing (28) in second with her time of 4:20:25. Third position was claimed by Shirley Scriven (43) in a time of 4:26:08 with Dot Hartmann (52) taking fourth spot in a time of 5:13:51. There was only four ladies brave enough to tackle the gruelling 70, and it would appear that they left even some of their masculine counterparts in the dust.

For the younger riders there was a challenging 10km race. Jarred Watridge took the overall first spot in this event in 27:57.9 with Waldo Potgieter and Success “the Iceman” Malulsls in third place. Heidi Katske (32:58.0), Rachel Thompson (33:00.5) and Tashane Ehlers (33:59.8) took the podium spots for the ladies. Ehlers won this event last year in a time of 38:33.1.

The “happy medium” however was the 40km Mooketsi challenge which saw Morné Lamprecht take the overall first place in a time of 1:11:49 and Sheldon Muller in second with his time of 1:29:19. Third spot went to Bevan Muller in 1:29:25 right on the heels of big brother. It was Anri Gutrierrez who stood highest on the podium for the ladies this year, when she managed a five second win over Christelle Coetzer in second place. Both these ladies crossed the line in 1:40:12 and 1:40:18 respectively. Third spot went to Jennavieve Truter in 1:40:55.

Indoor hockey has recently seen renewed interest among the local schools and club teams as the region still reels in the afterglow of the two recently unveiled astropitches. But until recently indoor hockey, a slight deviation of the traditional game, has always taken a backseat.

For the past two weekends a number of mixed teams from local high schools have been playing a friendly indoor hockey tournament at Stanford Lake College.

On Monday,24 September, trialswere held to establish the Limpopo Leopards provincial teams, who will be travelling to Gauteng in October to participate in the All Stars Tournament, as well as to Cape Town in December, where they will play in the PSI Indoor Nationals.

Merensky High School was well represented with Chantelle Meyer and Desiré de Jager who were selected for the U/14 girls team; Dominique Blandin de Chalain, Janké Basson, Charlize Meyer, Bercha Venter, Emma Dalrymple-Hay and Zané Booysen who will be playing for the U/16 girls team as well as Benjamin Freitas who was selected for the U/16 boys team.
