Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha, has ordered the Treasury to lodge investigations into claims of collusion in the School Nutrition Programme (SNP). This after allegations emerged that tenders were handed to certain people and their relatives, while women, youths, and the disabled are overlooked. The programme is aimed at feeding children at school. The Premier’s spokesperson, Kenny Mathiva, said that Mathabatha ordered the Treasury to investigate allegations of corruption and nepotism in the allocation of tenders for

the programme. He said the Chief Procurement Officer (from the national office) which is an independent agency free from Government, visited the province to be briefed about the complaints from the Treasury. He said they reported to the Premier that the investigations would be completed in three months. The complaints allegedly centred on five companies owned by one person under different names all doing business with government. Mathiva further said that among all the 283 companies that are responsible for the

If it were to be found that the appropriate procedures were not followed, then the chief procurement officer would give recommendations on action to be taken. The Premier’s office hotline is 0800 864 7729 to report corruption. Meanwhile, Disabled People of South Africa (DPSA) has accused the Limpopo government of not complying with the two percent quota to hire disabled persons into the public service. Therefore it is not taking the disabled seriously as the government of the past did. Provincial spokesperson, Foster Moyana, said they tried to raise the issue with government several times but were not listened to. He said that when President Cyril Ramaphosa opened parliament, he spoke of the new dawn, but it seems it takes long in this province. According to Moyana, the government in all the twelve departments have failed the disabled and have hired only one percent of the disabled people. He said in the department of health only ten disabled people are hired while other departments did not even try. IDP and Budget to be reviewed In the meantime residents of Lenyenye (Ward 31) would converge at the community hall this Sunday (29 April 2018) to discuss the Draft Integrated Development Plan and Draft Budget for the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) for the coming financial year commencing on July 01. The meeting will take place at 08h00. According to municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, the Draft Budget and Draft integrated Development Plan for 2018/2019 was compiled and tabled by the GTM council on the 29th of March in terms of the Municipal

Valley village, and ward 35 will converge at Semana Primary School. These are the last community meetings between the community and their councillors to discuss the budget and the IDP. Thereafter in the last week of June, a special council sitting will be convened to adopt the budget and the IDP. The budget for all the municipalities will be operational as from the first day of July. Limpopo Health budget at R19m

Limpopo’s Department of Health said it would save R270 million after it terminated the contracts of community care giver contractors. According to the department they were being overcharged by these ‘Care Givers’. As a result, the department will now absorb the staff that were managed by the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO`s) this financial year. The announcement was made by MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba during her budget speech at the Legislature on Thursday. The ‘Care Givers’ are women working in townships, villages and the farms, helping the sick with medicine, bathing them, taking care of the frail, and people with chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, sugar diabetes etc. Most are dressed in white and come from various clinics in the area, but are employed by service providers who are paid by the government and thereafter pay their employees. Dr Ramathuba said that in one incident a

contractor is paid about R14 million a year for supplying the ARV`s and taking care of people with HIV-AIDS and TB, but sometimes patients are returned. She said the government has shouldered the responsibility to pay laboratory services for the clinics and she cannot understand why they should continue with the contracts which are milking the department. “R2 million has been set aside for the provision of medicine at hospitals and the clinics and the shortage of medicine in clinics will be a thing of the past. R85 million has been allocated per month for the medicine dispensary at medical centres. Clinics are not currently operating 24 hours due security issues where nurses are robbed of their belongings by criminals and sometimes even security officers are attacked” she said. “We urge community members to take care of security at their clinics like the community of Sethlakong village in Bolobedu where community members are responsible for the

security of their health centre. The government has not enough money to provide for security at hospitals and clinics and therefore it would be better if residents could secure their clinics.” She added that there was a massive service backlog in the department. This, she blamed on the officials who spent much time in offices and could not see what was happening in their wards. She added that there is now a system in place to monitor the movements of government vehicles which would alleviate the issue of “vehicles bought today and next week you find them in the scrapyard”. In the past there were incidents in which government vehicles would be taken to scrapyards and stripped of their engines. The new tracking system would monitor the movements of the government vehicles and drivers would be called to account for violations. Voortrekker Road repaired this week

We paid a visit to the site on Monday morning and sure enough we were greeted by an inspection team busying themselves with the business of determining the damage to the roadway and how best to approach its reparation. Tuesday morning started with communi-

coming month. Though the community is elated at the quick response to their urgent cries, history has taught us that applause should be reserved for a new broom, it is said, sweeps cleanest. It is the hope of this publication, and indeed every one of its readers, that Thapelo Matlala continues his campaign to restore Tzaneen to its rightful place amongst the jewels of Limpopo. SanWild greets its founder Louise Joubert (59) was killed in a motorcar accident late Monday afternoon while travelling along the R526 Gravelotte Mica road. The accident occurred at around 18:00 that afternoon. Reports suggest that her vehicle collided with a transport truck and overturned from the impact. The exact circumstances which caused the accident and any further information was not made public and is the subject of an ongoing SAPS investigation. Joubert was well-known in the area for her role at SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary in Gravelotte which she founded in 1998. Since the news of her death broke, condolences have poured in over social media from all across the region. In a Facebook announcement on Tuesday, Lizel Kachelhoffer, Joubert’s daughter, expressed her shock and disbelief saying that the phone call informing her of her mom’s death had torn her heart into pieces. Though she felt the world was unfair in stealing her mom away from the people and the animals in her life, she would try her very best to continue the good work her mother started through SanWild. On their website, SA People published a trib-

ute to the woman who fought for Africa’s wildlife ferociously throughout her life. They also made mention of the fight to save a white rhino ‘Big Boy’ which saw Louise in the media spotlight extensively. Ironically, despite her best efforts she could not save ‘Big Boy’ from the poacher and he was reportedly killed on Saturday. Two days later she too would be gone. “Our deepest, deepest condolences to Lizel, and all Louise’s friends and family… and all of South Africa’s wildlife.” – SA People. At the time of going to print there was no information made available regarding her funeral arrangements.

GTM holds meeting in village school hall A meeting to discuss the Greater Tzaneen Municipality budget was held in the Haenertsburg Primary School Hall on Tuesday evening. Matters concerning the village were discussed with councillors René Pohl, Roniel Rikhotso and Cassius Machimana. Almost R4-million has been allocated to replace the entire potholed road leading up to the village cemetery. Construction will begin on 1 July and is expected to take a year. New transformers and new lines will be installed to strengthen the current dire electricity situation. The family of 7 Bok Street lodged a complaint about their street light that’s in such a state of disrepair that it has been tied to a tree to keep it upright. There is huge concern for the sad and disgruntled five GTM workers who usually tend to the lawn maintenance of the verges, arboretum and cemetery. The employees’ gardening equipment was taken away from them and contractors were employed to maintain the village every two weeks. This, the villagers maintain, is an unnecessary expense when the five GTM employees should be put on the newly required skilled training course, get their dignity and equipment back, and resume their original good maintenance of the village. Villagers queried an entry in the 225 page document that proposes money be set aside for Haenertsburg library sleeping quarters. The matter was asked to be referred to the librarians as it’s deemed possibly unnecessary to have such a structure. The storm water drains have not been cleared for ages and this needs to be addressed before the next rains. The leaking water pipe at the police station that overflows into a drain on the R71 next to the fruit seller across the way from Lekwar Restaurant has still not been repaired. The matter was reported in the Bulletin newspaper but no action was taken. The councillor apologised for not reading the news item and promised he would, in future, be vigilant about future newspaper reports. One of the two reservoirs servicing the village is cracked and empty. This was pointed out by one of the villagers and the councillors noted that this matter is to receive urgent GTM attention. Mara Hermann from Magoebaskloof Tourism said that

the organisation had been submitting documentation to the GTM since 2016 to have the ablution block, off the main street, upgraded. This is particularly problematic during festival times when Magoebaskloof Tourism has to pay to bring in portable toilets. The four-way stop at the village entrance is not being ad-

hered to and villagers requested that this receive urgent attention. The accident prone Magoebaskloof Pass was also discussed with many villagers begging for the 80 km an hour restriction to be lowered. There were 176 accidents on the Magoebaskloof Pass in one month this time last year. Currently there is at least one accident a day on the Pass.

The Message

Granny’s Grumbles - Toastmasters

More than twenty years ago (when I was young and enthusiastic) I decided to join Toastmasters after I had seen an advertisement indicating that it was being started in Phalaborwa. Why was I interested? Don’t know really – probably because it was something different and it was meant to give one confidence. The day before I was to attend the opening I happened to visit

some friends who had their seventeen year old nephew living with them due to some problems within his own family circle. Ashleigh (for that was his name) was very quiet, very shy and hardly said a word. I was conned into agreeing to take Ashleigh to Toastmasters as it was felt that it could only be good for his interpersonal relationships – the fact that he didn’t want to go was not even considered. The following evening (after picking up Ashleigh) off I went. Just as well that the toastmaster in charge of proceedings was actually a woman because the other seven participants were all men and I think I might have felt slightly uncomfortable being the only woman present. Anybody who has ever been involved with Toastmasters will know the drill – stand up for two minutes and give the story (abridged) of your life with no ‘ums’. An ‘um’ is an absolute no-no in any speech and you lose a certain amount of marks for every ‘um’ you use. You got marks for clarity of speech, pronunciation and various other things, but the ‘um’ problem was present with most of us – a couple of us landed up with a minus mark. Ashleigh refused point blank to consider getting up and making any type of speech. I assumed that I would not be expected

to collect him the following week, but his uncle and aunt assured me that he wanted to be part of it. Same problem – he refused to get up and say anything. The third week I just didn’t pick him up. The fourth week I was once again asked to collect him and assured that this time he would speak. The evening started off with the old hands (those of us who had already had three weeks of learning how to enunciate and getting pronunciation correct) being given our little slips of paper which gave us topics to deliver. The speaker was marked by the teacher while the rest of us took count of the ‘ums’. Eventually the teacher turned to Ashleigh and asked if he would like to give us the two minute talk of his life. The young man got to his feet and very hesitantly told us of his schooldays and his grandparents who had taken care of him. No ‘ums’ so far. Long pause – “My mother was sixteen when she had an ‘um’ moment – I was the result of that ‘um’ moment. I think I’ve been the cause of quite a lot of ‘um’ moments since then”. Turning to the teacher – “Am I going to lose marks for those ’ums’? They were intentional”. The class collapsed – Ashleigh was one of us at last!

En barmhartigheid is ’n uitbreiding van die begrip ,,hart.’’ Wat het Jesus bedoel toe Hy oor barmhartigheid gepraat het? Die Nederlandse teoloog Antonie van Ruler verduidelik dit mooi. Hy meen dit werk soos drie opeenvolgende sirkels. Barmhartigheid is mildheid, ontferming en vergewing. Mildheid beteken om vrygewig en welwillend teenoor ander te wees. Ja, om ruimte te maak vir ander mense. Dit gaan daaroor dat ek ander geluk gun. Die tweede sirkel is ontferming. Dis wanneer ek iemand jammer kry en help as hy of sy sukkel in die lewe. Ek maak m.a.w nie net ruimte vir ander nie, maar raak betrokke by hul nood. Ek het iewers gelees dat Christene mense is wat help om ’n gemors op te ruim waarvoor hulle nie self verantwoordelik is nie. Dis waar. Die laaste sirkel is vergewing. En natuurlik is dit nie so maklik en eenvoudig nie. Om iemand wat jy as ’n geliefde of vriend te beskou te help en te vergewe as hulle jou te na gekom het , is een ding. Maar jou vyand? Dis ’n ander storie. Dit is nie iets wat van nature kom nie. Maar nou is die wonderlike dat God Sy barmhartigheid in Jesus so mildelik oor ons uitgestort het. En Hy het kom sterf vir álle mense. En Hy wil gee, as ons maar net wil ontvang! As Hy ons die lewe in volheid skenk, loop ons bekers mos oor, en wil ons dit deel! Die barmhartigheid waarop ons van God se kant reken, kan op geen manier losgemaak kan word van die barmhartigheid wat ons aan ander moet bewys nie. As jy bereid is om op grond van Sy genade barmhartig te wees soos die Samaritaan in Lukas 10: 25 vv , ongeag hoe sleg iemand jou behandel het, is jy nog ’n tree verder op die Jesuspad. Rocks donated to stop Elephants The SANParks Honorary Rangers, in conjunction with the Kruger National Park have this week received a major boost to their efforts to conserve an ancient baobab tree at Shimuwini. The age old gargantuan has recently come under attack of the local elephant population who continuously rub up against its bark. Over the course of time, this act, though not malicious in its intent, has caused significant damage to the tree and spurred the Rangers into action. They devised an ingenious plan to pack a large amount of rocks around the tree which would deter the trunk-toting tree scratchers. There was only one problem

however; where would they get the rocks from. Soon after their call for assistance, a Phalaborwa-based family, the Süllwads’ came to the party and delivered two truckloads of rock

to the site from their Amersa Rocks operation. “We, the SANParks Honorary Rangers – Bushveld Region, wish to extend our sincere gratitude towards the donations made by the Süllwald Family towards our endeavours to safeguard the Baobab tree at Shimuwini. Their very generous gift will have a major impact on our cause,” said Gert Coetzee of the Honorary Rangers. “On behalf of Kruger National Park and SANParks Honorary Rangers – Bushveld Region – we wish to thank the Süllwalds’ for making a positive difference. Information Centre Skeleton finally demolished The Tourist Information Centre building in Tzaneen was gutted by a fire which started just after midnight on the morning of Tuesday, 17 October 2017. Since that fateful night, the blackened skeleton stood watch at the entrance to town. Completely forgotten and left to crumble a little more every day under its own weight. But this week, almost seven months down the line, the carcass was demolished by an as yet unknown contractor. Two TLB’s were rented from a local businessman and work began on demolishing what was left of the white elephant. Bulletin was at the site on Tuesday and we noticed that work had stopped. There was not one hard-hat to be seen anywhere and the two TLB’s were parked near a makeshift curio shop down the corner of the parking lot.

We asked the Greater Tzaneen Municipality whether they were the ones responsible for the demolition, but Neville Ndlala said he carried no notice of the project. “That build-

ing was not ours, but here is the number of the spokesperson of Limpopo Tourism, he can answers your queries.” Mike Tauatsoala, the spokesperson for Lim-

popo Tourism, also carried no knowledge of any demolitions. In fact, he was not even aware that any work was being done at the site. “I will have to find out for you, but as far as I know, those guys are not employed by the Department of Tourism. The building was not ours, we only rented it from the landlord.” In the meantime, we have learned that the unknown contractor who rented the two TLB’s from a businessman in the area has allegedly disappeared without paying for the rental. We have not been able to source any further information as the businessman has not been willing to speak to us. We have been told that he has approached the new CFO of the GTM, Andre Le Grange. On Saturday, 21 April, Merensky High School welcomed various sports teams from Hans Strijdom High School in Mookgophong. From the word go the Plasies ruled the roost. On the muddy rugby fields the boys proved invincible in their second round league matches. The U/14A team started off with a promising 17-7 win, where after the scoreboard was a sight to behold. The U/15A and B teams silenced their opponents with scores of 54-0 and 51-0. The U/16s continued the winning streak with a 34-5 final score. In the senior camp the 2nd teams were equally matched with a 22-22 draw. The

Merensky XV did the school proud with a final winning score of 27-12. The game started with a successful penalty kick by Delux Jooste. Calvin Schambriel (6) scored 2 tries, while Ryno van Burick and Martin Theunissen each scored 1 try. Delux Jooste and Frans Potgieter added to the score with 1 goal kick each. The score boards at the netball courts echoed the winning streak in the day’s friendly matches. The U/14A girls won 21-7. The U/15A team bettered this with a 33-3 win. This inspired the U/16A team, leading to a 35-0 score. The 2nd team won 16-1, while the first team were cheered on to an astonishing 63-11 victory.

The girls hockey also triumphed. The U/14’s won 6-0 with Claudelle Cawood as player of the match. The U/15 team put a top score of 11-0 on the board, and Karlien Lombard was appointed player of the match. Michelle Brummer carries the U/16 player of the match title, after her team won 5-0. With more than 70% ball possession it was no wonder that the 2nd team won their match 4-0 with Jessica Botha as player of the match. The Allesbeste 1st team’s scorers were Corli van der Merwe (2), Tharine Lombard (1), Kesia Pohl (1) and Michaela Dale (1) and the player of the match was Sancha van Niekerk.

MHS meet their match Merensky High School played their first league game of the season against Pietersburg Hoërskool in Polokwane on Wednesday, 18 April. The U/14 Boys’ game was nail biting from beginning to end. Both sides had supporters on the edge of their seats with a display of talent and team spirit. Neither of the teams managed to score a goal thus ending the game 0-0.

The Plasie U/16 team put up a brave fight, showing true character, they lost the game 0-4. Coach Louis Fourie said, although the team wasn’t on the winning side, they stood together as a team. The 2nd team also drew the game with a score of 2-2. The first goal on the Plasie side was scored from the post by John D Ball, which ended off the first half with a 1-1 score. After PHS scored

in the second half, in the last 40 seconds of the game, Jason Mellett managed to equalize for Merensky. Mellett was also appointed man of the match. PHS’s 1st team scored their first goal in the first half from a penalty corner. At half time the score was 0-1. They scored another 4 goals and although the Plasie boys kept on fighting, they lost the game 0-5.

Tour de Limpopo kicks off

It was ProTouch Sports’ Gustav Basson who edged his wheel in front to clinch the victory on the opening 96.6-kilometre stage of the Tour de Limpopo from Polokwane to Tzaneen on Monday. Due to points accumulated during the stage, 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Clint Hendricks (Team BCX) donned the yellow jersey and holds the top spot in the General Classification going into tomorrow’s stage two. Stage one departed from the iconic Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo’s capital city Polokwane in an easterly direction towards Tzaneen, presenting the riders with 1 266 metres of climbing for the stage. The first

‘Sprint Hotspot’ of the tour was positioned at 26.6km, with Hendricks claiming maximum points in the charge for the green jersey followed by Ryan Harris (Officeguru Racing), then Abou Sanago (World Cycling Centre Africa Mixed Team) and Steven van Heerden (Team BCX). Soon after, six riders broke away and rode valiantly for the majority of the race as the fast descent past the Zionist City Moria began. Marc Pritzen and Brandon Downs (both Team BCX) James Fourie (ProTouch Sports), Temesgen Buru (World Cycling Centre Africa Mixed Team), Alexander Worsdale (Officeguru Racing) and Jaco van Dyk (ACDC Luso) extended their lead by over two-and-

a-half minutes from the peloton at one point. Hendricks, Basson and Calvin Beneke (ACDC Luso) made good time on the descent to close the gap and to join Pritzen and Worsdale in the lead as the new group of five extended a short gap ahead of the peloton. Within the final 10km, the peloton was chasing hard and within two kilometres to go, Jayde Julius (ProTouch Sports) bridged across to join the lead group in a charge for the victory, with Basson crossing the line first. Down and dirty for a cause The second annual Tzaneen Care Group Dirt Dash went off without a hitch this past weekend amid the cold and rainy weather which blanketed the entire George’s Valley area in thick mist. From early morning the teams arrived in their brightly coloured – and mostly eccentric – outfits ready for the challenges that lay ahead. Once again the professional and efficient team at Magoebaskloof Adventures were tasked with the duty of delivering a muddier and more challenging course.

Yasmeen Moosa, Chairlady and Director said that they approached the event with a positive attitude based on the fact that the community has always been so supportive of all the Tzaneen Care Group’s ventures. Everyone there was diverse from backgrounds, strengths, ages and fitness. Yet all approached the set obstacle course with grit and determination. The spectators encouraged wall climbs, mud crawls and sliding down the famous mud slip. This year’s event saw a total of 360 participants, compared to last year’s 288 competitors. There were different age categories and team dynamics which saw children and adults of ages and fitness levels partaking. Brat splats all received a special handcrafted cupcake topped trophy. “A heartfelt thank you to Smit & Kie for taking hands with Tzaneen Care Group and sponsoring the venue as well as entering 6 teams of staff members. Great way for other business to step up to the plate,” Moosa said. “The Tzaneen Care Group is grateful to the sponsors who supported our event without whom the target of raising R 100 000.00 could not have been achievable.” Tzaneen Care Group will be using the funds raised to maintain and improve the Tzaneen Cancer Care Centre as well as implement awareness projects and support for cancer survivors, patients and loved ones. Once again the continued operation of the Tzaneen Care Group and the Tzaneen Cancer Care Centre is due to the community support. No doubt this event will become an annual event on the Tzaneen Care Group calendar. Take note and make sure to take part in 2019!!!!

What a game! With the club hockey league in full swing the action is heating up on the astro at Ben Vorster. This weekend saw one of the most exciting field hockey matches thus far the season when the Hyenas took on the Stanford Lake Badgers on Sunday afternoon. Spectators were treated to a feast of goals at both ends with the teams taking the battle to each other in the centre field. The Hyenas are comprised of players from both Phalaborwa and Hoedspruit and very seldom are afforded the opportunity to practice together. They boasted a very strong forward attack and a rock solid back line. In their ranks they fielded players with provincial and international club hockey experience which showed especially during their short corners. On the other hand the Stanfordian Badgers had to settle for a weakened side with three of their key-players missing due to other responsibilities. Though they seemed to have taken the Hyenas lightly at the start of the game, two quick goals by the ‘Green Hounds’ woke

them up near the end of the first half and they fell back into form. The game was extremely high-paced despite the slow pitch. Great short passes and communication between the forwards and midfielders kept the Hounds in the Badger-D for most of the first half. Jide Mohale, the Hyenas big right link caused quite the upset at the Badger backline with his speed and aggressive attacks which led to the first goal of the game in the 7th minute. The boys in green were on the attack again and through an opening created by Mohale, Caelan Retief was able to smack a bullet past Badger keeper Bernard Pretorius The Hounds continued their relentless assault on the Badger backline until Retief broke through with a fantastic run down the left which drew the keeper away from the box and allowed for a great tap in to make the score two-nil. A lot of loud talking in their ranks managed to regroup the Badgers who retaliated in true Stanfordian-fashion to level the score with two beautiful goals by Lance Trueman and Stanford Lake headmaster Craig Carolan, before the half time signal. It was now a game and when the sides returned to the pitch for the

second half, the tension was palpable. An error in the penalty area resulted in a Hyena short corner which was magnificently converted through a

drag flick in the top left corner by Ruan Burger. The Badgers replied with a quick goal of their own a few minutes later and with just a few minutes left on the clock, Jide Mohale powered in the winning goal to clinch the match for the Hounds. Their victory places the Hyenas at the top of the log along with the Polokwane Kings, separated only by goal difference. The weekend saw seven games on the day which started at 08:00 that morning and ended at 16:00 with the last match between the Hyena Ladies and Bosveld from Polokwane. Bosveld Ladies won that match 3-0. The sport has seen a major jump in popularity because of the new facilities at Ben Vorster which includes the state of the art astro
