r a e y t n e r diffe The impassable Claude Wheatley Street which has changed from a three-lane carriageway to a single lane obstacle course thanks to the inconsiderate actions of local taxi drivers.

As with the case of the R71 hawkers, the taxi drivers at the Tzaneng Mall taxi rank have continued to display an arrogant disregard for the law. And local traffic law enforcement is nowhere to be seen amid all the chaos. Bulletin has reported countless times on the severe safety risk that these taxi drivers hold for the Tzaneen motorists and general public. The GTM shrugs its shoulders and similarly, the traffic department seems unperturbed. Long have motorists complained about Claude Wheatley Street (which runs behind the Tzaneng mall and houses a taxi and bus rank) being impassable because of the taxi drivers using one of the North bound lanes as a parking space. Claude Wheatley is in-

tended to be a three lane carriageway, but has systematically been transformed into a very treacherous single lane. Between the dangerously arrogant taxi drivers, their non-roadworthy minibuses, retail delivery vehicles, trucks and busses who use this road daily, motorists risk serious injury and hefty insurance battles as they dodge pedestrians, potholes and oncoming traffic during their commute. Past excuses by traffic officers to validate their seeming inability to control this situation – or at least attempt to curb its escalation – have included a fear for their lives. “We live in the same villages as most of the taxi drivers,” said one officer who requested ano-

nymity. “If I write one of these guys a ticket, I place the lives of my family in danger.” The taxi drivers are of the opinion that parking at the rank is not sufficient. “What must we do when our passengers want to come to the mall to shop? There is no parking here and so we have to make a plan. If the municipality can give us a bigger space, we will be happy.” We have issued the GTM with another enquiry to find out if indeed they have a plan to restore order in Claude Wheatley Street. The same enquiry was sent to the Traffic Department. Bulletin will also follow up on the alleged meeting the municipality claims they will be having with the illegal street hawkers

who endanger the R71. It is concerning that no action has ever been taken against any of these illegal vendors. The SAPS stepped in on the 30th of December, but that was only to resolve infighting among these traders – never mind the fact that they should not be trading there in the first place! Even more concerning is that despite dozens of reports on this matter (and the taxi rank issue) in both local and national media, television broadcasts and countless complaints by their citizens, this town’s municipality have still not managed to bring their house in order. More in next week’s edition. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
