On Tuesday morning, the 28th of November, the taps in Phalaborwa ran dry. And they stayed dry for 11 days. The water supply to the residents of the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality was cut off without warning during one of the hottest weeks in the province this year. With no means to bathe, brush teeth, prepare food or flush toilets, some families took to bathing their infants in their swimming pools. Neighbours filled dustbins with

“At first, we thought it was probably just some maintenance being done on one of the pipelines,” explained one resident, “But by the third day without water in 40 degree Phalaborwa heat, people became desperate and we started looking for answers.”

phosa is leading the race. In Mopani where the regional leadership favoured Nkosazana Zuma, branches nominated delegates to vote for Cyril Ramphosa. Even the branch in Bokgaga village where the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) mayor, Maripe Mangena, is a member, the branch sent delegates to elect Ramaphosa for president.

In Waterberg where the Regional General Council (RGC) could not be convened due to differences on the preferred candidate for presidency, the matter ended with the court ordering that the ANC should resolve the disputes between the provincial chairperson, Stan Mathabatha, and Secretary Knox Seabi, but delegates elected by the branches were mandated to vote for Ramaphosa.

According to political analyst, Elvis Masoga, Ramaphosa is leading the race and in the provinces where he leads, he defeated his opponent with more than between 300 and 400 votes. In the provinces where he is not doing well, the difference is not very significant. He added that though provinces might have their own preferences, the power lies with delegates from the branches.

Masoga further said in the remaining PGC of Limpopo, Ramaphosa is expected to make a difference of more than 400 votes. By Tuesday morning the Kwazulu-Natal votes were tabled though, Nkosazana Zuma won that race with 433 votes to Ramaphosa’s 199. He said this is an indication that members of the

branches still believe that the deputy president should succeed the president.

The spirit in rural villages is that of unity with everybody now seemingly supporting Ramaphosa instead of the preferred Nkosazana Zuma initially. This is caused by the fact that nobody wants to be seen supporting either factions in fear of ramifications in case the preferred horse fails at the polls. The conference will take place on the weekend of December 15-17 at Gallagher estates in Gauteng.

After the conference, President Jacob Zuma will not deliver the January 08 statement because he would no longer be the president.

Also in mid-February, Zuma will not open parliament as his recalling from parliament is imminent. In March, South Africa will not conclude the nuclear deal with Russia as he would no longer be the president and his removal will be followed by a cabinet reshuffle. Daggers are out in the ruling party.

In Limpopo, a Ramaphosa win will secure Stan Mathabatha`s job as the premier which will mean there would be a reshuffle in the province resulting in the MEC, whose department`s finances are in doubt, not retained. There seems to be a tussle between the provincial secretary and the chairperson over the preferred candidate for presidency of the ANC and the matter was referred to Lithuli house for intervention by the court.

Standby workers must receive cell phones The term of office for municipal shop stewards will be extended from three years to five years following the amendment of the constitution, which has been referred to the Department of Labour for ratification.

The news was not well accepted in Tzaneen, because the three year term for office bearers has lapsed and ordinary members demanded that elections for the new leadership be held as soon as possible. Though consensus was not reached regarding the status of South African Municipal Workers Unions (SAMWU) leaders, the matter was referred to a general meeting so it can be decided if the term of Tzaneen officials can be extended.

According to a secular issued by the provincial leadership to all regional leadership and shop stewards, this follows a resolution taken at the 11th national congress held in August 2015 in Durban “to amend the constitu-

tion to align the term of office for shop stewards and its structures with that of the term of office in the local government sector” reads the document.

“The resultant implications were that the terms of office of shop stewards and structures will be five years from the date of the finalisation of the amendments by the Central Executive Committee (CEC). The CEC of 5-7 May 2017 in Nelspruit received a report and adopted a resolution to the effect that constitutional amendments had been finalised and sent to the department of labour for ratification” added the document.

According to the secular ‘‘The net effect is that the term of office for shop stewards and structures will be five years from the last local government elections of 2016 coming to an end in 2021.” The Tzaneen shop stewards whose terms have expired will have to be extended with four more years until

2021. But the move was vetoed and was referred to a general meeting so a decision can be made.

The local SAMWU secretary, Patric Maake, said, when they received the secular informing them of the amendments, they had deemed it necessary that the matter be referred to the constituencies for a decision on the future of the local branch in view of the fact that their office time has expired. He said members have the right to remove a shop steward or the whole committee provided appropriate procedures were followed.

Also during the meeting it was announced that there will be a change in the conditions of employment for workers, which will include, the extension of medical leave from 90 and 160 days to 120 and 360 days respectively. Another change is in connection with the redemption of leave days from the normal eight days to 10 days with effect from 1 October 2017.

The new conditions mean workers will now get 120 days paid in full for sick leave and from then employees will have to be paid half until the days reach 160. After that time, no payment will be in effect. After these days are depleted, a worker will still be on the service without pay until about 360 days. The meeting also heard that there will be a change in overtime. The employer should always provide transport to work or reimburse workers for the costs incurred on their way to work. Also, there should be a specified number of hours to do overtime work and that those working standby, should be provided with cell phones to make their work easier.

In another development, Samwu will today (this Friday) converge at the Tzaneen swimming pool to celebrate their year end function with the new leadership issue shelved for next year.

GTM Electrical Titanic approaching the iceberg

As the region enters the rainy season, power outages will again become common place as the GTM’s outdated electrical infrastructure continues to buckle. Bulletin received information from two credible confidential sources which, as absurd as it sounds, is sadly not surprising.

According to our sources the main substation in Tarentaalrand is currently under severe pressure allegedly because one of its three transformers is damaged and in need of urgent repair. Because of this, there are now only two transformers at the sub-station bearing a load of 60 Mega Volt Amp (MVA) each – a combined total load of 120MVA. The total load burden on these transformers is currently close on 120MVA. Without the third transformer, there is no backup to the power supply in case of an emergency. The ‘rule’ is to always have a spare transformer (or an extra 60MVA) at the ready.

“The GTM told us that should the transformer be removed in order to be repaired, it would have to be transported to Johannesburg and that would take around three months to get it back. So the transformer now just sits there, unused.”

Why Johannesburg? And why would it take so long to have the transformer repaired?

“The issue here is outright the non-payment of their suppliers,” our source alleged. “The mere fact that it would allegedly take three months for a supplier in Gauteng to repair a transformer, indicates that the GTM owe people money. A breakdown priority can be arranged with your supplier if your account with said supplier is in order. One supplier in Mbombela now refuses to deal with the GTM because they still have not paid their account which is now 24 months outstanding. It is absolutely ridiculous!”

Our source made another terrifying revelation. “Of the 124 autoreclosers which are

supposed to be in working order along the power grid, only 25 are operational! Of these, probably half are aged and will soon give the ghost too. If that happens we will be in serious, serious trouble. If the funds are allocated to repair all the autoreclosers, it will take roughly five years to implement and prevent a catastrophe.”

Autoreclosers are used on overhead distribution systems to detect and interrupt momentary faults. It acts as a circuit breaker equipped with a mechanism that can automatically close the breaker after it has been opened due to a fault. These reclosers protect the transformers and powerlines. Without them, the entire grid is volatile.

In the meantime, a technician employed by a GTM electrical contractor, was hospitalized earlier this month when he pushed his aluminium stepladder into the busbars while working on a high voltage (66Kv) line.

This raises a few questions. Was the tech-

nician qualified for the specific task he was given? Did the GTM’s Electrical Department declare him competent to work on the high voltage line and if so under whose supervision did this man operate – and was that supervisor appointed according to the law, and in writing?

Bulletin has been unable to gain any clear cut answers on the electricity crisis facing the entire Mopani District ever since our investigations into the matter started more than two years ago. The responses from the various spokespeople differ so drastically that it is near impossible to draw any concrete conclusion. Similarly now, we do not know how long the transformer at Tarentaalrand has been out of order, nor do we know why it was not been repaired ahead of the rainy season. We have again issued a media enquiry, but we are not holding our breath.

He said in a radio interview, on the 4th of December that the work was not completed until the Friday, at which point the water supply was again reopened. “There is no water cuts from the Department of Water and Sanitation, because our engagements with them are at an advantage. We are owing the department, yes but we are not one of those municipalities who have been neglecting their debt.”

He denied that the water pressure was being throttled by Lepelle Northern Water because of the MDM’s non-payment. “We are experiencing low pressure in Phalaborwa due to the fact that we closed the main water plant for 12 hours’ routine maintenance on Tuesday and again on Friday, which caused our reservoirs in most areas to become depleted. It will take about three days for the reservoirs to fill up again.”

The weekend came and went and still there was no water. This prompted Manie Kriel, President of the Phalaborwa Home and Property Owners Association, to call an emergency meeting with the townsfolk on Monday afternoon. The meeting was well attended.

“Our water has been cut off because the Municipality has not paid their debts,” he said. “This is unacceptable and we will now seek legal action to demand that the water supply be returned to normal and that the municipality be placed under administration. We pay our account diligently and now we have to bathe our families in swimming pools? This is not constitutional and certainly not acceptable.”

When Bulletin contacted the MDM on Monday morning, the 4th of December, Shikwambane’s comment differed from his initial statement a week earlier. “The issue here is one of historical debt and it stems from municipalities in our district, not settling their accounts with us, which means we struggle to settle our account with Lepelle Northern Water who is the service provider on behalf of Mopani District in the various municipalities.” He then said that the major cause of the historic debt was because of the townships and the rural areas who are not paying for water. “If you take a drive through Dan Village for example, you will see beautiful

gardens being watered all day, every day and vehicles being washed at will.

This is because those residents don’t pay for their water so they do not use it sparingly. The residents who pay for their water in towns like Phalaborwa, do not cover the entire debt owed to their municipality and we therefor only receive a portion of the monthly payment due.

Local woman recounts her traumatic ordeal It is “16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children”. One very brave woman from a farm outside Haenertsburg, Liz Betton, recounts her half-hour traumatic attack two months ago.

“I walk my dogs along the farm roads every afternoon. I’d walked some 300 meters from the house, negotiating a slope, when I encountered the attacker around the bend. We greeted each other with the customary word, ‘Tobela,’ and he asked about accommodation.

“As many walk this farm road, I wasn’t surprised to see a stranger. He repeatedly said in perfect English that he’s Zimbabwean. I told him to go to Asgard, a nearby compound.

Then he threw stones at Bongo my Rottweiler/Labrador and Rory a little Pointer-cross that I adopted from Polokwane SPCA. “The dogs ran off. In hindsight I should have walked away but I went back to tell him to stop harming my dogs. He rushed at me demanding R50. I turned my pockets inside out to show him I had nothing. He demanded R50. I showed him my tissue. He then grabbed my wrist and pulled me down the bank telling me that he’s going to have sex with me. I am fit and healthy but this man was strong.

“He threatened me with something in his back pocket. There are tall trees on either side of the road, with just a thin patch of sky above, making screaming useless. He pulled me up against the bank. My head and shoulders were against the bank and my body in the road. I tried to reason with him when he suddenly interrupted and said he was going to kill me.

“His fingers of steel tightened around my

neck and deep into my throat as he choked me. I couldn’t breathe. He took the beanie off his head and viciously shoved it in and out of my mouth. I was a whisker from death. Then he released my neck. I got air into my lungs. My shorts and panties were off my body.”

At this point Liz’s big eyes well up with tears and she whispers, “I don’t know how that happened.”

She continues, “He’d undone his belt, taken out his flaccid penis and was shoving it back and forth between my naked legs.

I looked once into his eyes and saw crazed madness. I couldn’t look again. I didn’t know what to do other than pray aloud. That stopped him. He told me to go, I found my shorts and panties and ran away naked. I’m not going to get dressed in front of a monster.

About 30 meters away he shouted at me to put on my clothes.

“I ran home to my husband Peter. He rocketed out of his chair and we waited an agonizing hour for the SAPS. I felt dirty. Indeed there were pine needles in my hair, my back was brown with dirt, my lip was swollen and blue, I had bruises and scratches down my neck and I was as white as a sheet. When I wiped my mouth, bluish-lint stuff came away - the

Granny’s Grumbles – The Full Monty It has become fashionable in the past couple of decades to have an annual medical, which is euphemistically known as the “full Monty”. I have never had one and I don’t believe I ever will be convinced that it is absolutely necessary unless you actually have something wrong with you.

Jean, who is some years younger than me, decided 10 years ago that she needed a full check-up, (not because she was unwell, but because she felt it was the right thing to do) so off she went to the nearest big city.

When she arrived back at work, she was distraught. She was diagnosed as having a heart flutter, high blood pressure and had a bone density problem.

The blood pressure tablets made her ill for weeks – the doctor did assure her that they would eventually find the right one for her but in the meantime she felt nauseous, had headaches and generally wanted to cut her throat.

Her bone density has never improved but, according to the doctor “just think what it would have been if you hadn’t been on the medication”.

On the strength of Jean’s diag-

nosis, a mutual friend also went off and it was discovered that she likewise had bone density problems. When a third friend decided to join the rush for a complete going over, I couldn’t wait to hear what they found wrong with her. Barbara has been smoking for 45 years and enjoys a serious tipple. They didn’t actually find much wrong with her, but they did suggest that she cut down on her smoking.

However, she’s not going back because of the mammogram. I had never really known what a mammogram was, but after a fairly hair-raising description from Barbara, I’ve decided I can live without one.

In her own words “Only a man who disliked women could have come up with the idea of a mammogram procedure – can you imagine a test for testicular cancer which entailed a man’s private parts being pressed down on to a metal plate, then having a plastic plate brought down to squash all the family jewels - It wouldn’t be allowed.”

A few years back, my 82 year old friend, Mary, became a vic-

tim of the annual rush. The only reason she went was because her daughter (who is very health conscious) insisted.

Mary fell in with the idea mainly because it meant leaving our little dorp and travelling to a city with large shopping malls.

However, after all the procedures were over her daughter was told to take her as soon as

possible to a specialist in the same building. Evidently a scan had detected a large growth.

Since the specialist concerned could only see Mary a few days later, they returned home and went back the following week.

After examining the scans the specialist asked when the problem had started. Mary told him she had never had a problem, but had been told that she must see a specialist because she had some sort of growth. He was amazed – he examined her, prodded around and discovered that she didn’t have any pain. The growth was practically the size of a golf ball and, according to him, must have been there for years.

Fortunately for Mary, this specialist was not a man who used any excuse to utilise his scalpel.

He told her she was the healthiest 82 yearold he had seen and as and when she DID have pain to contact him immediately. She is now 85 – no pain with any growth or anything else.

Each one of my friends has come back from her full medical feeling worse than when she went - I rest my case – I am not joining the annual rush!

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Greetings in the Name of Christ!

In some of the main line English Churches viz. Catholic, Anglican and Greek Orthodox it is the practice to have different colours displayed, either on the altar or on the robes the priest wears as well. Many have asked why this is the case and I would like to take this opportunity to briefly explain the reasons. In short, the colours express the emotions and ideas that are associated with each season of the liturgical year. We are in the season of Advent and the colour for this season is Purple. The ancient royal colour was purple and the symbol of the Sovereignty of Christ. It is also the colour for lent as it is associated with repentance of sin.

White or Gold symbolizes the brightness of day it is the colour of Christmas day and the twelve days after Christmas.

It is also the colour at Easter. It is often used at funerals to symbolise hope.

Red is the colour of Pentecost. It evokes the colour of blood, the colour of martyrs and of Christ’s death on the cross. Red also symbolizes fire- the Holy Spirit.

Green is the colour of growth and is used in the season of Epiphany- the spread of the Good News. This is the longest season in the liturgical year.

Although these colours are specific to the seasons different colours are used to celebrate different events during the year as well.

As I have indicated this is the season of Advent when we prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Christ, a special season which should be one of love and peace and it is my wish that with God’s guidance we will all be more Christ-like in our dealings with others. Share the joy that Christ brings to all believers with others and bless them. Pray for them to receive the same joy we experience.

Smile at people and show that you have the love of Christ within you.

There were no male lions in GV

Bulletin spoke to Zander Osmers Jnr this week in connection with the four lions that were purchased from him by Hanno van Rensburg the week before. The lions were being transported to Baltimore, near Lephalale, from Gravelotte after they were purchased from Osmers Exotic Game Breeders that weekend.

Two of the lions escaped from the transport trailer which resulted in panic and a widespread search for the animals. They were later recaptured and transported to the Phalaborwa veterinarian, Sampie Ras. They suffered fractures on their hind legs from jumping off the trailer, and Ras operated on them to repair the damage. Hanno van Rensburg Wildlife Services handled the transport.

At the time, nobody knew where the lions were being transported to, for what purpose they were bought

by Van Rensburg and how they managed to escape from their trailer.

Bulletin did some investigating which raised some concerns and some very controversial questions.

Were the lions destined for the business end of a hunting rifle, or for game viewing? Van Rensburg runs a very lucrative hunting outfit which caters to the American market and also has a conservation operation which offers game drives and safaris.

One local newspaper made the claim that the lions were intended to act as “protection” for the rhino kept

at Van Rensburg’s farm in Lephalale. Osmers set the record straight.

“The other paper’s choice of words were a little out of context as lions could not really act as protectors to rhino, but they could serve as a deterrent to would-be poachers in a sense.

But, then again, poachers would probably poison the lions too as they have done here in the Tzaneen area, so we will have to wait and see,” said Osmers. “One thing I have to clarify is that those lions were not bought from me with some sinister motive in mind. I would never align myself with any illegal practice such as canned lion hunting.

It is not only illegal, but against my own moral code, so the public need to understand that, very clearly.”

He also said that no male lions were purchased or transported and that the remaining of the four was darted on Sunday. All four of the animals were also chipped. “It is illegal to hunt a chipped animal so that in itself is an indication that the lions will not be hunted. The Department of Nature Conservation was present during the darting and the loading of the lions and they too are conducting an investigation into this matter. A last point to mention is that no hunter will ever come to Africa to shoot a female lion. Show me a hunter that does this and I will be very surprised.”

Bulletin has still not managed to gain comment from Hanno van Rensburg as he maintains that he does not speak to the media.

What a waste of water Aids message targets the “Blesser” phenomenon Water is regarded as a precious resource in many parts of South Africa.

However, it would appear that Haenertsburg does not care about its water and the nonchalance, in particular, seems to be coming from the SAPS. A big water pipe at the police station burst at least six months ago and the water runs down the slope towards the R71 and gushes constantly into a storm water drain. Sabrina, the nearby vegetable seller, confirms that this has been a problem for months.

A local as well as Willie Fratter, head of Lepelle Water, have been to the police station as well as the GTM to complain and to try and get this burst pipe fixed. It is such a waste watching clean, clear water from the reservoir running straight into the storm water drainage system.

The local spoke to the SAPS representative in Haenertsburg in charge of public works, but this has not yielded any positive results. Thus thousands of litres of precious water a day are being wasted because no one’s doing their jobs. In desperation the local has turned to the press to try and get this pipe replaced and fixed.

The Department of Social Development’s theme for the HIV/AIDS month “She Conquers” is aimed at discouraging young girls from engaging in sex with older men in what is called the “Blesser and Blessee” phenomenon.

This, according to the department, is the main source of infection among the youths. The department has also launched programmes to make sure people go for testing while still early.

Head of department, Dr Ntsi Kgaphola, said as the department they resolved to take the message to the youth, because of the increasing acts in which young girls go out with older men in order to make money. The Doctor stated that old men attract young girls with gifts and as a result the girls are left vulnerable.

“We hope that our message of discouragement will see a decline in the infection rate,” he said. “The message we are sending to men on the other hand, is that they should be circumcised and continue to use condoms. Parents are urged to be vigilant and expose these would-be “blessers” so the Department can put a stop to these acts.”

He added that Aids is not only spread by sex, but through negligent conduct by medical staff with syringes, kissing with someone whose gums are infected, as well as the exchange of razors.

Kgaphola added that the department realised that the Abstain, Be faithful and Condomise (ABC) slogan, did not work as they had hoped. “We have therefore sought other means

to spread our message and encourage people to go for testing and receive the medication to prolong their lives. Because of overcrowding at clinics, the department has agreed with shop owners to deliver medicines for the chronically ill people at local shops so patients can access them easily. Patients should not skip their medication, as that makes it hard to heal in time. For example, it takes only six months for tuberculosis to heal, but if medication is interrupted the results may be different.”

He concluded that medication for Aids had been reduced, as patients take one pill instead of three as was the case in the past. Aids day is celebrated in December each year.

Lenyene faces a grave dilemma Residents of Lenyenye have allegedly defied the municipal by-laws by building walls on the inside of the graves of their loved ones, and erecting headstones instead of the whole tombstone after they had buried a dearly departed. According to community members, placing coffins into the raw soil, without brick and mortar on the inside lining of the grave, was damaging the coffins of their loved ones.

Those who spoke to the Bulletin said they had contacted the municipal officials about the problem after realising that only a few months after burying their dead, the graves

began to sink. One resident said they called a meeting in which the matter was put on the agenda and it was decided there, that something had to be done to remedy the situation.

A municipal operator who asked not to be named, said they had referred the matter to the local councillor who understood the plea of the community and from then on, residents began to prepare graves on their own.

The new Lenyenye cemetery was established about five years ago when the old one reached capacity and could not be used anymore. In the beginning a grader would dig, then municipal employees would work

out the grave before burial. Residents were not allowed to build inside as was the norm in the past. They were told that only headstones will be put up and then the municipality will plant the lawns thereafter.

In rural villages, the cemeteries are managed by the traditional authority and when a death occurs, residents dig the graves themselves. Thereafter, they build the walls inside the grave and later install a full tombstone.

But, in townships things are different. Here, residents report to the municipality and are issued with grave numbers. The municipal grader will dig the graves at a fixed fee.

The cemetery is situated in the bush between the Khujwana and Moime village, about four kilometres from the township.

Other than the road that is redone frequently and the ablution facilities, there is no running water or security. It happens often, that graves are trampled on by cattle resulting in the tombstones being damaged. The cemetery was established in 2010 with land offered by the Bakgaga traditional Authority.

Village now has open parking area As Haenertsburg festivals became more and more popular, so parking became a major headache for the organisers. The little main road of Rissik Street is a narrow road especially with cars parked on either side of the street and hundreds of people walking to either browse in the shops or go for a meal at one of the many eateries.

The open fenced tract of land off Rissik Street and opposite The Iron Crown Pub & Bistro belongs to the SAPS. More than 25 years ago sheep quietly grazed in its pastures. Those sheep are long gone and this area became a viable option as a parking lot to accommodate the tourists’ vehicles during festival time as well as a general parking area.

SAPS gave permission for the area to be used for parking. The Haenertsburg Residents and Ratepayers Association then decided that the area would not just be used during festivals but for general daily use

as well. The conversion, facilitated by Magoebaskloof Tourism Association with the help and support of Stevens Lumber Mills, began some ten days ago. The area was levelled and grass is now being planted. The revamped area will be available for parking by end of January next year.

It will also be in time for the hugely popular Haenertsburg Food Wine and Beer Festival on the 28th and 29th of April next year.

The front lawns of the Magoebaskloof Hotel have been transformed into Busy Lizzys’ Petals. Indeed Liz McGaffin constantly checks on her hundreds of petals in her nursery.

Some are in hanging pots and others are supported on wooden slatted planks painted in pastels. Pathways wind in an out, allowing for the major festival traffic. The bill is a white plastic spoon, embedded in the container with the price marked in black. Present this bill at Hotel reception to pay.

The beginnings of this quaint nursery went through traumatic times before getting off the ground. Liz, left radiography and the big city life to build an off-the-grid home on part of a family farm. Her passion is plants and she started her home nursery. However, ill health and crippling fibromyalgia followed and she endured major surgery. Her eldest son, Graham Paull, had also lost the use of his body almost overnight, from the waist down.

With tenacity and always a smile on her lips Liz has worked through these major issues and her home nursery started becoming viable. She’s happy about the space and feet allocated at Busy Lizzys’ Petals. Liz has a variety of plants with pastel coloured markers such as herbs, easy growing, indigenous, seasonal shrubs, seedlings and ornamentals.

If Liz is not at Busy Lizzys’ Petals, the hotel staff is extremely helpful. Liz is probably home tending to the growth of the next batch of seeds, cuttings and seedlings.

Of colourful idioms and magical tales The Greater Tzaneen Library Services runs a popular competition, in all four languages mostly spoken in the area, for school children every year. The aim of the competition is to make children aware of the libraries and to inspire them to visit these institutions and enter the agical world of books.

Die AfriForum-tak in Tzaneen het ’n buurtwag op die been gebring wat ten doel het om misdaad in dié dorp in samewerking met ander plaaslike veiligheidstrukture te beveg.

Volgens Jaco Grobbelaar, AfriForum se distrikskoördineerder vir Limpopo, is die behoefte aan ’n AfriForum-buurtwag tydens ’n onlangse veiligheidsvergadering uitgespreek.

“Lede van dié AfriForum-buurtwag sal opleiding in patrollering, noodhulpbystand en toepaslike wetgewing ontvang. Dit is belangrik dat lede van veiligheidstrukture toegerus word en bevoeg is om hulp in noodsituasies te kan bied, maar ook oor die nodige kennis beskik om altyd binne die raamwerk van die wet op te treë,” sê Grobbelaar.

Phallies riders complete Swadini

The Phalaborwa cyclists were well represented at the Forever Resorts Swadini mountain bike challenge which was held on the 25th of November. Cyclists were given the option of entering for either the 25 or the 50 kilometre races with a prize giving ceremony to close off the day’s festivities. Though a slight downpour covered the racetrack, this was exactly what every mountain biker longs for and the races continued without a hitch. Seen here are Shanw de Beer, Gert Rabie, Andre and Ruan Loubser, Dylan Strydom, Karin and Johan Taljaard and Andre Prinsloo.

On the 21st of November, the Phalaborwa Road Runners club held their annual general meeting. It was on this occasion that the club’s athletes were rewarded for their achievements during the season.

Collen Mmola was named “The fastest man in the club” while Hahhy Ubusi took the title of the fastest Comrades athlete.

Magriet Grobler took the prize for the fastest walker with Jaqui Porteus winning the prize for the fastest lady in the club.

Veteran athlete Gert Rabie was awarded the “Best Grand Master time in a half marathon” and also raked in the Clubman Shield, by collecting the most points during time trials and races he completed.

Those residents who are interested in a fitter lifestyle are invited to join the Road Runners who train every Tuesday afternoon at 17:15 and 17:30 for walkers and runners respectively. During the winter season they start 15 minutes earlier. For more information contact Alan Cole on 082 229 5570.

Die Graad 12’s van Hoërskool Ben Vorster het Maandag, 27 November, die skoolbanke vaarwel geroep met die skryf van hulle laaste eksamenvraestel. Die Vossies se klas van 2017 sal onthou word as ‘n jaargroep wat hulle skool se naam op akademiese-, sport- en kulturele vlak hoog gehou het.

In 2017 het Hoërskool Ben Vorster koning gekraai as onder andere - dié top netbal-, krieket- en swemskool in die provinsie. Die 1ste hokkiespan was Noordvaal-naaswenners, die 1ste- en O/17-sewes rugbyspanne was Limpopo-naaswenners.

Die matrieks van 2017 het dit egter eens dat die gees, wat onder die groep geheers het, vir hulle die hoogtepunt van hulle vyf jaar in Vossieland was. Hier is hegte vriendskapsbande gesmeë, wat hulle altyd sal behou, want as jy eenmaal ‘n Vossie was, is jy vir altyd ‘n Vossie.

Merensky brei bestuur uit Hoërskool Merensky is bekend daarvoor dat hul pro-aktief optree, daarom is besluit om met ingang van 2018 graadhoofde aan te stel wat net fokus op elke graad se besondere be-

Die trail run het die meer as 200 deelnemers oor plaaspaaie, deur ‘n kilometer-lange trein tonnel, oor ‘n treinbrug en verby ‘n dam vol seekoeie geneem. Elkeen van die drie afstande, naamlik die 6km, 12km en 25km bied die deelnemer ‘n besonderse ervaring wat absoluut uniek is.

Die reën het die reeds uitdagende wedloop ‘n nog groter uitdaging vir die deelnemers gemaak. Sekere dele van die wedloop was op grondpaaie wat vol modder en baie glad was, wat dit ‘n onvergeetlike ervaring vir die atlete gemaak het.

Die wedloop begin en eindig op die gronde van Falconwood Beverages. Vanjaar se 12 kilometer wenner, Patrick Sethowa, het in ‘n uitmuntende tyd van 45 minute en 37 sekondes, sy 2016 titel verdedig. Sy tyd was hierdie jaar so rapsie oor die vyf minute beter as sy vorige wentyd.

Die eerste dame oor die wenstreep hierdie jaar was ook verlede jaar se wenner, T Mabasa, in ‘n tyd van 59 minute 59 sekondes. Sy het ook haar tyd verbeter.

Die langasems wat eerste oor die wenstreep in die 25 kilometer wedloop geseil het was T Ramohleue vir die mans in n tyd van 1:39:35 en sy vroulike eweknie, J Mudau in ‘n tyd van 2:19:00.

Tzaneen Maratonklub bedank graag vir Falconwood Beverages en Miami Canners vir hul ondersteuning van hierdie unieke wedlooop asook al die helpers wat deur harde werk en deurnis n groot bydrae tot die sukses van die dag gelewer het. HIGHLIGHTS This past sporting year was an extraordinary one for Tzaneen’s athletes. It was filled with often unimaginable victories and mind-bending achievements. As is customary during the final weeks of every year, Bulletin will take a look back at some of the highlights of 2017’s sporting calendar and the athletes who made us proud.

In April we saw a 12-year old girl throw a javelin past the 34m mark to win gold at the South African champs. In March we spoke to Eldred Hawken, the local boytjie who joined the Multiply Titans cricket squad and in the two months that followed we watched as Ben Vorster’s rugby teams lifted the Limpopo Championship trophy. May herald-

ed the first in a string of exciting new adventure races as the very first ever Dirt Dash kicked off in Georges Valley. With the GTM finally managing to get their act together and doing a fantastic job of completing the upgrades to the Tzaneen Municipal Swimming complex, local aquanauts had a sterling swimming season. Polokwane again hosted the annual Smirnoff 1818 Raga Bolo street soccer tournament which saw local soccer squads performing well enough to make it to the finals in Gauteng again this year.
