on the 27th of November, the Department of Water and Sanitation issued a press statement in which it warned that water supply was to be cut off to municipalities who owed millions in water debt. Water and Sanitation Minister, Nomvula Mokonyane, identified 30 municipalities who’s individual debt exceeded R50 million – Mopani District Municipality (MDM) allegedly owed in excess of R600 million.

Neil Shikwambane, the spokesperson for the Mopani District Municipality, denied the rumours that the bulk water supply to the municipality had been cut off due to non-payment. Instead, he maintained that the water shortage was as a result of emergency maintenance conducted on the mainline that Tuesday morning.
