No space for ‘Rambos’ This was the stern warning by SAPS Deputy Provincial Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers, at a Letaba Safety Forum general meeting held on Wednesday. “Neighbourhood Watch, Farm Watch and other related organizations which fall under the local Community Policing Forums need to understand something very clearly,” he said.

“You are there to back up and assist your local police in the event of a crime, not the other way around.

The police are the law enforcers, and we cannot have this new tenden-

cy of security groups taking the law into their own hands. If you keep bypassing the police, you not only delay their reaction time and inhibit their efforts to do their jobs, but you could face charges of defeating the ends of justice.”

The meeting was held at the showgrounds and was attended by major role players within the safety and security fraternity from as far as Hoedspruit to Haenertsburg. The meeting was chaired by Ben van Coller with three Major Generals present as special guests. They included Major General Sheepers, Major General Maggie Mathebula the Tzaneen Cluster Commander, and Major General Mbazima Ngobeni, Giyani Cluster Commander.

“Delegates should, when they attend the conference, elect accountable leaders who will restore the values and correct the mistakes of the past. The youth should be urged to participate in nominations of delegates so that they will elect the youth in the upcoming conference.”

Though most branches eligible to vote in the conference had already converged to nominate leaders as well as choose delegates to the conference, those that did not make it were given until next week to meet and choose their delegates.

Row as Stokvel money disappears Khujwana villagers were stunned last Sunday at the Shikhati traditional court, when leaders and former leaders of a burial society detailed how the sum of R20 000 belonging to a mutual burial Stokvel, was embezzled due to an “internal crisis that could not be resolved early”.

This comes at that time of the year where Stokvel’s across the Mopani region prepare for the annual sharing of the savings that they have been collecting throughout the year.

The Nhluvuko Burial Society members converged at Shikhati Cluster court to hear what happened to their money after it was reported to the court that the Stokvel went bankrupt. This follows after three members of the Stokvel were denied monies to bury a loved one.

According to Selina Makumbila, all was well until, towards the end of last year when, the Stokvel committee was charged for allegedly embezzling money and a new committee was installed. The new committee was mandated to withdraw the money (totalling R12 000) and add R7 000 that was raised for last year only.

The money was withdrawn, but not banked, instead it was shared among the few.

The names of the culprits will not be revealed due to the nature of the court. One of

the new committee members said however, that the money that was withdrawn was rebanked and the R7 000 was shared among the members at the appropriate time as is done annually. She explained that the 16 members of the Stokvel contributed R50 a month, and agreed to pay R2 000 to a member in time of bereavement. She added that at the end of each year they would share within each other R500 and the remaining funds would be allocated to another bereaved member should that need arise.

“The court heard that certain members of the committee would call and say they are hungry, then they would go to the bank and withdraw the money and share among each other without the knowledge of the other members.”

During the proceedings, the traditional court heard statements from four accused and after considering the evidence presented, Senior Headman, Mr Olmar Shikhati, found the culprits guilty of the offence and ordered that they pay the money back. He said that he could not decide for them if they still want to continue but they had to do all they could to repay the money that was allegedly stolen and thereafter compensate the affected families that could not be helped.

Shikhati gave a stern warning to his com-

munity saying that the members of the committee will have to resolve the matter among themselves and calculate the value each member stole. According to him, if the council and community members could not keep their house in order, the Stokvel will lose its relevance and its value.

“During a meeting of headmen with chief Muhlava II Samuel Shiluvana, last month, we were ordered as headmen to help burial Stokvels implement constitutions and policies so people could not flock to the headkraal with Stokvel problems. I hereby urge all Stokvels to have programmes and policies to run their affairs so these kinds of problems could be avoided,” said Shikhati.

The Nhluvuko Burial Society that was formed ten years ago, this time will not be able to distribute R500 amongst its members while others will be buying groceries and sharing among themselves. Stokvel is a culture in African communities which can be likened to a “savings club” of sorts. Money is contributed to either be shared or reserved for funerals among members. “Nhluvuku” means “Civilisation” but here, something went terribly wrong.

Nkowankowa shootings kill three Three people were killed and six wounded in two separate shooting incidents that took place in Nkowankowa on Saturday evening.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, a 37-year old, off-duty police officer allegedly shot his girlfriend, and her father, in what appears to have been an altercation. The father was shot dead and the girlfriend wounded. The police officer was later found dead with the

gun next to him.

In another incident a 62-year old man shot and killed another man at a beerhall. The incident also took place on Saturday evening.

According to the police, following the incident patrons attacked the gunman after the shooting and he opened fire on them. He was later saved from the mob, by the police and is among the wounded.

Col Ngoepe appealed to the community to

refrain from incidents of family violence and the abuse of guns during drinking sprees.

The police have not arrested anyone in connection with these incidents and the killer of the police officer was unknown at the time of going to print. It is also not known whether the gun used in the beerhall shooting was a licensed firearm, or whether it was registered to the suspect.

Dlamini Zuma (NDZ) had only 21% support. The same reportedly applies to all regions within Limpopo, except the Waterberg region, because the regional conference has been postponed several times. The reason for the numerous postponements is allegedly because delegates could not agree on who the region should appoint as its president.

Political analyst, Elvis Masoga, said the decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ANC to extend the period of branches to elect delegates, will minimise the complaints that are raised by the branches. He said that in Limpopo, Ramaphosa is leading throughout. According to him, the NDZ supporters know this and it is for this reason that Mkhize was introduced in a bid to win over the undecided votes.

Eskom explains their challenges “We can say with great relief that Mopani District’s municipalities are all very good payers, and we have no issues regarding their accounts.”

This was the statement

by Nare Ngoepe, Tzaneen Zone Manager for Eskom, during a media briefing held on Tuesday at the Eskom offices in Tzaneen.

Members of local media outlets were briefed on the procedures and structures within the organization and offered clarity on the various challenges and misconceptions faced by the electricity giant. One point in particular that was focussed on was the

enormous power crisis that Tzaneen and the surrounding areas have been facing the past few months. According to Eskom, the problem is not related to municipalities owing the powerhouse money, but lies within aged infrastructure and the unwillingness of certain communities to comply with rules and regulations.

“The infrastructure around Mopani is old. Some of the infrastructure is the property of Eskom and some belong to the various municipalities. Currently, processes have been implemented to rectify and replace infrastructure in order to not only restore stability to the electrical supply, but also ensure sustainability of future growth,” Ngoepe said. “The municipal technicians cannot work on our infrastructure and similarly, Eskom technicians cannot work on municipal infrastructure, but we have a working relationship which enables both parties to assist each other on specific projects if it is required.”

Ngoepe added that a major stumbling block is electricity theft in the form of illegal connections and a new type of crime, “Ghost Vending”. Eskom has found a number of illegal prepaid vendors who have

found a way to generate fake electricity voucher pin numbers. These vendors sell prepaid electricity at a fraction of the actual cost. “When we come to a complex or a neighbourhood and we inspect the meters and connections of these properties, we often find one person will have R10 000 worth of power loaded on their meter. When we cross-reference this with our own records, we find that the units were purchased illegally.

We then have to spend hours’ worth of manpower to correct the account, and in the process face some aggressive resistance from the home owners,” explained Thomas Ceko, Customer Relations manager for the Mopani District.

Currently, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality is the second biggest buyer of Eskom power in the province with their monthly purchase of 90MVA. Top of the list is the Palabora Mining Company (PMC) who purchase 127MVA per month, which is 105VA more than the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality.

“We need to urge our customers to exercise patience during the rainy season this year as we do anticipate power outages as we enter December. Your faults can be logged by con-

related group. There is no need to have 200 members of your community on a group meant for the purpose of emergency response to a crime. No, I repeat, no photographs or videos of crime scenes or suspects are permitted to be shared over WhatsApp or any social media platform as it can result in the case being thrown out of court immediately.” Major General Mbazima Ngobeni reiterated the statement by mentioning that criminals also have access to social media and that reckless distribution of information can be used by them to evade capture.

“In the recent case of mango theft in Ofcolaco, messages were shared on all these WhatsApp groups calling for all the farmers in the area to rush to the scene to help. Criminals intercepting these messages immediately know that all security companies and farm watch groups along with the police are now in that one place and they then hit other areas with the knowledge that they will not face any resistance. Stop this WhatsApp business for everyone’s benefit because it is creating more havoc than good.”

Focussing specifically on the dangers of WhatsApp groups, Scheepers explained that should a photograph of a suspect in a crime be circulated to hundreds of people via this platform, the suspect will not be identifiable in an identity parade and will then be set free after his arrest “If you identify him in a police line-up, the criminal will walk free because you could have seen him before and that means your testimony cannot be trusted.”

Only police detectives can enter a crime scene and it is off-limits to the general public because of the threat of contaminating the scene. “Circulating images of the crime scene places the scene in the public eye and completely counteracts the investigation as that scene is considered contaminated.

Evidence from that scene can no longer be used in the investigations which means that through sharing images and videos to nosy group members you have effectively obstructed the investigation.”

During the meeting the various roles of security companies, first responders, farm and neighbourhood watch groups were discussed in detail. The role of the CPF and how it is formed was highlighted in order to clarify the issue. “I find it funny that every second person now runs a CPF group when in reality this can never happen. The CPF is a legal group that must be established by the station commander as instructed by law. It consists of only five to seven members who each represent a specific safety group such as a neighbourhood or farm watch group.

The only task of the CPF is to act as a link between the community groups and the police.

Nothing else.”

Many other topics were discussed with the inputs from the top brass present, but the crux of the meeting was simple. “Know your place in the structures and follow the chain of command to ensure that crime in your area is dealt with effectively and immediately. Do not act outside the parameters of the law, or you could be arrested yourself.”

Greetings in the Name of Christ!

So we bid farewell to Ds. Jan and say welcome to Ds. Richard. AS Ds. Jan can attest to it is not always easy to find something suitable to write in this column, something that is fitting for the readers of all denominations and not bringing your own doctrine to the fore. I really enjoyed reading his articles and look forward to reading Ds. Richard’s. Perhaps I too should give someone else a chance? But will continue until someone else is found as I too enjoy writing.

I have often read various articles from different pastors/priests and sometimes I was left wondering if they were sharing the gospel of Christ or their own gospel.

Many a learned man wants to show others how much knowledge he has. But this is not or should not be the case of a preacher, they should endeavour by careful prayer and meditation to seek the true message from the scriptures. However, many fail to do this concentrating on only a specific verse or chapter, putting their own interpretation out there.

I have always tried to be led by God in what I write and yes, sometimes, I wonder is it really what God wants me to say or is it just me?

We all are seeking for good news in this topsy-turvy world of ours. The Bible offers us the opportunity to hear or read the good news for ourselves. The good news that Christ died for all our sins, giving us hope for the future. We, however, need to live out this good news by loving others and doing good towards them. If we are not sure of our interpretation seek the help of others and find out if they too see it from your point of view. Perhaps, then you can come to a better understanding of what was written and why the author wrote it. Good news brings hope to others as well as to ourselves, thus if we find something really inspiring why not share it with others.

Be careful in what you say or how you put something to others, otherwise you might just alienate them. Explain carefully that it is your interpretation and that you might have it wrong. It is not always God that is inspiring you, it could be just your vivid imagination. Be brave!

Boer op Jonkmansspruit doodgeskiet “Wat maak julle hierso?” Dit is die laaste woorde wat Christo Redelinghuys (60), gespreek het voor hy koelbloedig in die bors met ‘n haelgeweer geskiet is. Die voorval het op sy plaas, Jonkmansspruit, net buite Hoedspruit omstreeks 20:15 Sondagaand gebeur. Hy is kort daarna op die toneel oorlede.

Vroeër die aand het Christo saam met sy oudste dogter Retha (30), oudergewoonte hul plaashek gaan sluit. Hul drie brakkies was reeds in die huis. Oppad terug van die hek af na hul huis toe, het die paartjie in drie mans buite hul kombuisdeur vasgeloop. Christo

Retha, het na bewering skuins agter haar pa gestaan ten tye van die voorval en het hom dadelik in die huis in gesleep. Die drie booswigte het dadelik na die skietery gevlug en ‘n polisiesoektog is geloots.

AVBOB continues to make history despite harsh economic conditions In its 99th year, the AVBOB Group has produced a strong set of results despite the weak performance of the financial markets.

The announcement was made during AVBOB’s Annual General Meeting which took place on 16 November 2017, where the Society’s financial results for the 2016/2017 financial year were presented. AVBOB CEO, Frik Rademan, announced a net income of R1,1 billion before tax.

“During such tough economic times, having a profitable organisation is an achievement in itself and we are proud of what we have achieved,” Rademan said.

Amongst others, AVBOB was recently ranked third in the consumer category ‘Long-term Insurance’ in the Sunday Times Top Brands Awards and was voted the winner of the ‘Financial: Funeral Cover’ category for the second year running in the 2017/2018 Ask Afrika Icon Brands Survey.

The Society is less than a year away from

celebrating its 100th anniversary which will be on 15 August 2018, a milestone that not many companies achieve these days. Rademan said that AVBOB has great plans to celebrate this historical moment. Over and above what they intend to do to reward their policyholders, the Society intends to publish a book that will cover the growth and development of this iconic South African brand since 1918.

Earlier this year the Group announced its Schools Infrastructure and Poetry projects; two interesting and exciting initiatives that will coincide with their centenary celebrations. As part of the Schools Infrastructure project, the Group will invest R150 million to renovate nine schools across the country.

This is in support of the Department of Basic Education’s initiatives to provide quality education to all South African learners. The Poetry project provides established and aspiring poets from every walk-of-life with an opportunity to submit their poems in all 11 official languages. Winners of the competition stand to win significant cash prizes and upon completion of the competition, an anthology of the 100 best poems will be selected and published. Members of the public will also have access to thousands of poems which are continuously published on a website that was specifically created for this purpose.

Another truck accident on the Kloof Trucks are not allowed on the Magoebaskloof. However out-of-towners, like this truck from Gauteng, refused to take note of the signs prohibiting trucks on the dangerous pass on Friday mid-morning.

This was the second truck that overturned in the last week and there seems to be no end to the blatant disregard of the law by transport companies from specifically Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

Bulletin was unable to get hold of the spokesperson for the Department of Transport. We contacted whom we believed to have been the spokesperson, an extremely impolite Kagiso Mootane. Devoid of any telephone etiquette, we managed through a series of basic questioning, to deduce that she no longer occupied the position of spokesperson, despite still being employed at the department into a position she did not wish to divulge. We were offered the

landline number for the department in Polokwane – this was a dead end as each of the five calls we made to that office were left unanswered.

In the past we spoke to Limpopo Traffic Chief, Victor Khumalo, about the situation on Magoebaskloof and he explained the difficulties in policing that pass because of the lack of road shoulder in whih traffic officers can operate safely from.

We have suggested that the traffic officials stop the truck before they enter Magoebaskloof, or stop them should they manage to safely navigate through the pass into Haenertsburg. Haenertsburg has ample space and shade, for traffic officers to monitor the road. Considering that nothing has been done about the illegal traders along the R71 through Tzaneen, we do however fear that the policing of Magoebaskloof will remain a pipedream.

MDDA bids Hello 2018 and Goodbye 2017 On the 13th of November, Merensky High Schools’ MDDA tutors held their annual meeting and lunch.

2017 was an exceptionally successful year in more than one way. A record number of Plasies registered for MDDA classes and students performed well during examinations, competitions and the Tzaneen Eisteddfod.

The Dance, Drama and Art teachers are also eagerly awaiting the move to the new MDDA headquarters early in 2018. This will unify all departments under one roof, close to the main school building.

Mrs Mari Weber, MDDA Manager, furthermore announced that two new exciting departments will be added to the already impressive bouquet next year: Photography (which is sure to be a hit with the Plasies) as well as Contemporary Piano classes incorporating the well-known Rockschools syllabus.

Both these will be presented by Mrs Anica Scholtz, a newcomer to the Tzaneen area.

Scholtz runs her own photography studio and is a journalist for a well-known ladies magazine. She holds a degree in Journalism from NWU, as well as a Grade 8 in Rockschools Piano.

Another newcomer is Mrs Lize-Mari Jooste

who will head the fine arts department. She holds an honours degree in Art, Art History and Multimedia Design from NWU. Jooste runs Studio 54 in Tzaneen where she tutors fine art, graphic and multimedia design and photography.

Last but not least, Mrs Thessa Bekker will be presenting vocal lessons to all Plasies interested in improving their singing talent.

Thessa is an occupational therapist with a

keen interest in everything musical. She sang in school choirs, rock bands and sêr groups and was coached by the well-known Coba Wicomb in Stellenbosch. Her vibrant personality and fine alto voice will surely inspire vocalists.

Well known local actress, Anriette van Rooyen, has been assistant Drama coach for the past two years. She runs the Green Room at Merensky’s Teatro where she teaches dra-

It was sadly time to say goodbye to Mrs Bobbi Gerber who headed the vocal section for the past two years. Under her tuition many budding singers metamorphosed into stars on the Plasie stage.

After only one year as fine arts tutor, Mrs Berthie Greyling also bids farewell, as her art journey is about to travel lesser known roads in Australia. Under her tuition the Arts department held an exhibition and did amazing clay sculptures.

The headmaster, Mr Magnus Steyn, proposed a toast to all concerned and reiterated that the MDDA does Merensky High School proud. Arts and Culture are surely alive and well at Plasieland.

Unicorn’s impressive medal haul at annual gala

Unicorn Primary participated in the annual schools gala at the Tzaneen Municipal swimming pool and their swimmers did exceptionally well. These swimmers were awarded with sparkling new medals for their efforts and showed that this primary school is a force to be reckoned with both in the water and next to it. SLC take on Full Moon Adventure Race On Friday the 10th November, Stanford Lake College took on the daunting 100km Full Moon Adventure Race, held at Francolin Creek in the Free State.

This race tests participants’ limits to the extreme and Stanford entered three school teams into the race this year.

The teams were “Tshanduko” consisting of Matt Wilkinson, Emma Melville, Danica Altenroxel and Ani Gutierrez-Hernandez, a “Brothers in Arms” pair of David Pullinger and Casper Venter and “The Badgers” team with Owen Venter, Reuben Middleton, Lia Revelas and Andreas Hacker.

The teams raced hard, competing against all the senior teams in the field but in the end “The Badgers” ranked 11th and “Tshanduko” 10th in the 100km mixed fours category, racing for about 15 hours non-stop.

“Brothers in Arms” finished in second spot on the podium in the male pairs event, racing for 14 hours. Stanford also had staff competing with Mr Wilson and Mr Fullard racing for “Red Ants” who finished third in the mixed fours event.

Stanford Lake College had three of their linguistic Olympians compete in the annual Afrikaans Olympiad recently and their results were found to be most pleasing. Danica Altenroxel (91%) placed first in Limpopo and an overall seventh in the country. She received a cash prize and several book prizes for this fantastic achievement. Megan Joynt (90%) and Lia Revelas (89%) also ended up in the top 10 achievers nationally and respectively achieved second and third positions in Limpopo. There were 4 321 entries nationally. Badgers host party by the lake This past week, the Stanford Lake College Grade 8 group hosted a Christmas Party for one of their neighbouring schools, Glenshiel Primary. The party was hosted on the luscious lawns next to the iconic Lake.

It was a beautiful sunny day and the party was a huge success. The entire planning, organisation and running of the event was a practical life skills project in the Life Orientation class, and each one of the learners had the opportunity to take part in something.

Activities that were available to the little ones were face painting, dancing, soccer, musical statues and having the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap and make a wish. The day was sponsored by the Grade 8’s and their parents.

“We want to extend our sincere gratitude to the Robinson, Kalan, Knott, Patel, Otto and Maritz families for their huge donations which resulted in a most exciting day for our visitors,” said Rona McGaffin from Stanford Lake College.

Hengelaars sluit jaar af Die Letsitele Varswater Hengelklub het aan die einde van Oktober hul jaarlikse afsluiting en prysuitdelingsfunksie op ATKV Eiland gehou. Tydens hierdie spoggeleentheid is Deon Koekemoer en Susan Nel aangewys as die senior mans en vrouens Hengelaars van die Jaar. Ryno Scheepers en Carlize Benedetti het die twee junior Hengelaars van die Jaar trofeë ingepalm.

Die klub se top tien hengelaars is aangewys as volg: Carl Benedetti, Hennie Du Plessis, Deon Koekemoer, Susan Nel, Zelda Durrheim, Pieta Visser, Gerald Durrheim, Danie Viljoen, Ryno Scheepers en Tinus Nel. ryer van die Jaar was Sheldon Muller met Greta Bekker wat die toekening vir Beste Langasem atleet ontvang het. Beide hierdie sportsterre was afwesig tydens die funksie asgevolg van akademiese verpligtinge.

Groenes kuier by Bloues Met ‘n tema soos Toeka, was dit heel gepas dat die Letaba Tuinbouklub hul jaarafsluitingsfunksie op 17 November by die Merensky Museum gehou het.

Me. Nicky Barbeiro, kurator van die Plasie museum, het almal verwelkom met ‘n interessante blikbeker. Tafels onder die groot Wildevyboom het gekreun met tradisionele melktert en koeksisters.

Nashua backs Aces

Nashua Polokwane has placed their weight firmly behind the development of cricket in the province through the sponsorship of Polokwane-based Aces Cricket Club. The sponsorship will support both the Promotional and Premier sides of the Aces club and assist them in identifying and developing young cricketers in the province.

Over the next three years the Nashua Aces, as they are now known, will receive all their gear including warm up shirts, trousers, caps and proportional financial assistance in the acquiring of kit for the identified talented players. The boost received from Nashua will greatly increase the possibilities for younger players looking to enter the professional arena as they grow into their careers in the future.

“In addition to the gear and kit, we are looking at certain prizes and incentives to boost enthusiasm and excitement around the sport,” explained Grant Trueman of Nashua Polokwane. “We are very excited to be a part of the development of this sport and are certain that this new partnership with the club will soon reap the benefits we have envisioned.”

This past weekend the Nashua Aces Premier side faced off against the determined side from Nkowankowa which provided some top class cricket to the local supporters and lovers of the game.

The Aces won the match convincingly and will travel to Tzaneen this weekend to face local team, the Hornbills, on the grounds of Unicorn Preparatory School. The match will take place on Sunday morning and everyone is invited to join in a day of good cricket and socializing.

Bulletin had not received a match report of the game between the Aces and Nkowankowa at the time of going to print but we will add it into our report on the weekend’s game in our following edition.
