Why Shayi could bring about change The man elected as the new mayor for the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality, Pule Josiah Shayi, has occupied his position for close on a year and has already made all the right moves to garner support ahead of the ANC’s elective conference in December. Shayi was elected to replace Anna Sono as Phalaborwa’s mayor in August last year.

At a regional elective conference held at Karibu Lodge in Tzaneen in September this year, Shayi was elected as the new ANC Regional Chairperson by an unprecedented 24 votes.

He won with 155 votes to his opponent’s

131 which they received from 286 delegates.

His defeat of the former chairperson and MEC for Economic Development Environment and Tourism (EDET), Seaparo Sekoati, was seen as a massive victory for the Dlamini-Zuma faction who is contesting the Limpopo region against Cyril Ramaphosa, ahead of the coming party presidential elections.

Shayi is originally from the village of Mashishimale where he commands massive support. He is seen as a political activist of note and a great communicator, able to address community concerns because of his

approachability. His style of leadership is regarded by locals as similar to the much loved, Joe Mathebula who commanded a great deal of respect among his peers.

“Could Pule Shayi fix the mess that he inherited from his predecessor? I certainly think so. He has only been in office for a year and during that time he has been a very busy man politically. He has shown his willingness to get involved at ground level with his community and it appears as though he takes the grievances of the residents very seriously,” said one political analyst.

Dindinnie was looting not a land grab Sunday, November 5th

That morning the first reports came in. A group of close on a hundred community members had arrived at the farm armed with bags and escorted by bakkies. They broke through the boundary fence and entered the plantation where they began stripping the trees of their fruit. Bakkie-loads of mangoes were being transported off the farm and delivered to various atchar producers in neighbouring Nkowankowa and Lenyenye, before returning for the next load. Within a matter of hours, a substantial amount of mangoes had been illegally harvested as more and more community members flooded into the plantation.

Ofcolaco CPF and private security companies rushed to the scene in an attempt to bring the situation under control and prevent further losses. Beerseun Boerdery’s own private security patrol was also on the scene. The SAPS dispatched four vehicles to the scene. The situation took a turn for the worse when the looters became agitated and violent, throwing rocks at the police and security officers. Three vehicles belonging to K9 Security were severely damaged by the rocks and forced to retreat off the scene.

“When the rocks started flying, the police officers pulled back to a safe distance leaving us directly in the line of fire as we tried to make our way out of the plantations,” explained one of the private security officers.

“We opted to pull out of the situation to avoid any injuries to our personnel or the looters.”

As night fell, the looting subsided somewhat and law enforcement maintained a presence at the scene to ensure the safety of the res-

idents on neighbouring farms and prevent further looting and damage to property. The looters sent word that they would return that following morning.

Videos and images of the incident made their way onto social media and soon panic spread through the Facebook community like wildfire. The uninformed social media commentators alleged that the Dindini incident was the first of the Zimbabwe-style land grabs, not understanding the background and events that led up to the incident.

Monday, November 6th

Bulletin drove to the plantation that morning to gain clarity on the situation and joined up with the Ofcolaco CPF and farm security personnel. By 08:00 a large group of looters had returned. This time with more bakkies, some even towing trailers.

Police officers from the Public Order Policing (POP) unit were dispatched to the scene and joined the private security personnel as they entered the plantation to meet the looters head on and try and bring an end to the drama. The site of the police vehicles approaching seemed again to agitate the looters who started yelling at the police to leave.

The tension was tangible as the group merged in the centre of the plantation and started moving threateningly towards where the six police officers, and security officers, were standing. The main instigator of the group, a man by the name of Leon Pahasha, a former employee of the farm, was pointed out to the police and called one side to discuss the possible options of ending the looting. He instructed his hundred-strong group of followers to remain calm and stand down while he spoke to the police.

Phasha alleged that he was acting under instruction of one, Daniel Matlou, who was also present.

Daniel is the son of the original lessee of the farm, Salomon Matlou. A few minutes later, Kobus De Beer joined the meeting in the plantation to try and solve the matter. During the ensuing talks, Phasha inexplicably gave the order to his followers to move into the plantation and loot as many mangoes as they can, which they did amid shouts of victory.

“It is pointless to try and remove these people now, the damage has already been done and to interfere now will only escalate the matter and could result in people getting hurt, which is not at all what we want,” said De Beer.

The security companies and CPF units stood down and left the farm while the police remained at the scene. On our way off the property Bulletin saw police reinforcements arrive. “We are now going to remove these people by force,” one of the officers said. An hour later we saw a police convoy escourting around five bakkies, loaded with mangoes, off the farm. They had detained a group of the looters and were on their way to have them processed at the police station.

Word of the arrests reached the community and soon the situation flared up again with some of the looters setting fire to a tractor on the property and burning large logs in the middle of the entrance way. Police and se-

curity officers once again moved in. Some arrests were made, finally bringing an end to the two-day siege.

Official totals could not be confirmed at the time of going to print but De Beer did confirm that they had lost their harvest for the year.

At the time of going to print it was still not clear how many looters were arrested or what they would be charged with nor when they would appear in court.

They were however released on R500 bail with strict conditions that they not return to the farm. Bulletin did receive information that the incident was not being taken lightly by the SAPS who had escalated the matter to their top brass in Polokwane. An official statement will be issued shortly.

Follow up: Langenhoven murder suspects released The three suspects who were arrested for the brutal murder of a Silver Mist farm manager in December 2015, were released from custody. Rina Langenhoven was 67 years old when three men entered her home and murdered her before hiding her body under a mattress in one of the bedrooms.

The gruesome discovery was made on a Monday morning, the 7th of December, by one of her domestic workers. Her hands and mouth were bound with packaging tape. At the time, police investigators deduced that she had been attacked by unknown assailants while she was watching television. The motive for the killing was not known although an Isuzu bakkie and two cell phones were stolen.

Two days later the police arrested three suspects, Frans Seswa Mohlatlego (32), Lawrence Frans Hlongwane (45) and a former Silver Mist employee Frans Ngobeni (35). Police tracked the stolen vehicle to Mshongoville village at Mentz Mankweng. Other items that were stolen from Langenhoven’s home, including a laptop and cell phones, were found in their possession. These three sus-

pects then appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s court on charges of murder and housebreaking after the magistrate who was meant to hear their bail application in Haenerstburg’s Periodical court, was absent.

Bulletin received information from a reliable source that the suspects’ had their case postponed and were remanded in a high security prison until the time of their next appearance. They also allegedly gave testimony to their hideous crimes in sworn statements in the presence of a magistrate. It is alleged that in these statements they gave detailed accounts of the murder and robbery. Our source revealed that the court in Polokwane ordered their release earlier this month. This decision is to be challenged in an appeal supported by high ranking members of the judiciary and the SAPS. We have requested confirmation on this from provincial SAPS spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, but at the time of going to print no feedback had been received.

Nothing to do about stray cattle The life threatening problem of livestock on the province’s roads was allegedly addressed four years ago by the, then Provincial Roads and Transport MEC Lehlogonolo Masoga.

During that time he committed himself to meet with livestock owners, traditional healers and community members to address the issue. This came after the deaths of soccer coach Thomas ‘Chincha Guluva’ Madigage and soccer legend Lesley Manyathela who both died in accidents on the province’s roads after trying to avoid livestock crossing in the middle of the night.

Four years later and still nothing has been done to insure the safety of road users on the R71 or R36 roads leading out of Tzaneen.

Just last week another motorist lost his life near Ofcolaco because of cattle in the road.

“This is a massive concern for us as we deal with deaths and serious accidents as a result of stray animals on a weekly basis, but our complaints coupled with the rising death toll,

fall on deaf ears,” said Ofcolaco CPF Chairperson, Willie Smit. “At night it is impossible to see these animals ahead of you when driving, until you are a few metres away. Motorists slam on breaks and leave the road or crash into the animal often killing it and writing off their vehicle. Many people have suffered serious injuries or worse. We need this to be addressed as a matter of urgency.”

According to the local rural cattle owners however, fencing in their cattle or donkeys, is not a viable solution. “They have told us that it is better for them to leave their herds roaming next to the roads where they risk the chance of losing one animal to a motor vehicle accident, than fencing the animals in where poachers come and slaughter the entire herd to sell the meat illegally in the villages.”

In September last year a herd of cattle was causing havoc in Letsitele. The owner of the cattle was reported to the GTM who in turn stated

that should the owner not control his cattle, the animals would be confiscated. Where will they be confiscated to, we wondered? And a “warning” on what legal grounds?

Stock-farmers complain that fences along public roads are increasingly wilfully removed, damaged or destroyed, resulting in animals straying into the roads and causing accidents. The laws around fencing has led to much confusion and legal uncertainty – particularly in rural areas – in respect of liability regarding broken fences.

South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) do daily route maintenance.

Their maintenance teams have erected fences all the way from The Oakes near Hoedspruit through Ofcolaco to the Letsitele crossing in a bid to prevent these stray animals crossing into the roadways. At various intersections they erected proper gates to assist the cattle herders who need to take their herd to pastures across the road safely, without having

to damage the fence.

Despite these measures which costs SANRAL millions annually, the herders continue to cut through the fence rather than make use of the gates. This continuous vandalism means that SANRAL needs to spend precious man hours mending the fences daily to ensure the safety of their road users.

Because SANRAL does not have a law enforcement arm, they rely on the provincial and municipal law enforcers to prosecute the vandals. This is not done as the blame is shifted back and forth between agencies and the problem persists.

Bulletin has received information of a planned action by the department of transport, the department of agriculture and the provincial SAPS to put into place a system to curb the pandemic. We have not managed to contact the spokesperson for SANRAL or the Limpopo Department of Transport.

Fine the motorists to move hawkers

The street hawker problem in Tzaneen will not be solved soon according to a reliable source who spoke to Bulletin this week. According to our informant this is due to the political connotations attached to many of the vendors who are protected by top ranking municipal officials in their family.

“There are a few councillors and municipal employees who benefit from these vendors. It is also the reason these traders are allowed to trade illegally without the required permits, and why local law enforcement are unwilling to assist in their removal.”

According to our source there was a time when the Greater Tzaneen Municipality assisted in the removal of the stalls erected by the vendors next to the side of the road.

“Tzaneen’s traffic department in conjunction with the local SAPS used to accompany members of SANRAL in the evenings. They would load up all the pallets used by the illegal traders, remove it from the roadside and burn it on a huge pile. This solved the problem for at least two or three weeks until the traders managed to find new pallets and erect

their stalls at the same spot again. The process would then be repeated.”

In an attempt by SANRAL to minimize the risk to their road users, a series of wooden poles were planted at busy intersections such as the crossing at Venbeck just outside of town.

The SANRAL team used the poles to prevent the hawkers from setting up shop on the corners and make it impossible for motorists to stop and buy their produce. The plan proved very effective and SANRAL set out to implement it elsewhere along the R71 at known trader-hotspots.

“When SANRAL started work on the R71 through Tzaneen angry traders chased them off-site, warning them that should they continue planting the poles, they would burn all their vehicles and equipment. SANRAL retreated on concerns for the safety of their workers.”

Given that SANRAL does not have a law enforcement arm, the organization relies on the cooperation from local and provincial law enforcement agencies to enforce the rules of the road. The ‘no-stopping’ and ‘no-hawking’ signs planted all along the R71 past Lifestyle Centre, were placed there by SANRAL for the safety of the road users. The enforcement of these signs is left to the local and provincial authorities.

“An alternative solution was proposed recently to try and combat this problem from a different angle. It is suggested that instead of trying to remove the traders, motorists who stop at the trade posts should be fined hefty fines. If you deter the customers from supporting the traders, their business will dry up and they will remove themselves.”

The only problem with this proposal is that one would then have to find a way to ensure that law enforcers conduct regular patrols and look past the intimidation and bribes, when issuing fines.

Maruleng ignores R36 lighting issue

The Ofcolaco fuelling station and shopping complex situated next to the R36 between Tzaneen and Hoedspruit seems to have been forgotten by the management of the Maruleng municipality. The complex was bought

by Leon Steenkamp at an auction in April this year, and was in dire need of a makeover. Criminals plagued the centre with as many as two break-ins a week reported.

“Our complex was in complete darkness because of no lighting in the evenings and this made us easy targets for armed robbe-

ries,” explained Steenkamp. “We installed spotlights all around the centre and that alone solved the problem of the crime, but now we have another, more serious matter which needs urgent attention.”

Running past the complex is the notoriously dangerous R36 route which serves as the main line for commuters travelling to and from Tzaneen every day. On Friday evenings, traffic volumes reach dangerously high numbers as workers return home for the weekend. There is little to no visible

have never served their purpose.

With no lights at this busy section motorists are not able to see the speed limit signs or the stray cattle that plague the area. When a motorist turns off to the fuelling station at night, oncoming traffic and those travelling behind the vehicle are unable to see the driver turning which results in accidents.

The Maruleng Municipality have ignored numerous messages and phone calls from Steenkamp pleading for them to rectify the matter as a matter of extreme urgency.

“What is wrong with South Africa?” this is the cry of many people. Now I can list many faults and perhaps name and blame, but this is not, as I see it the main problem as to why South Africa is in such a mess (as is the rest of the world). I believe it is because we fail to obey God’s commandments, yes many may argue the Ten Commandments were given to the Israelites many years ago and are really not applicable to us personally. We can make a check list and tick off things we have never done and thus say we are obeying the commandments of God. If we are really honest with ourselves we will find that we have failed many of them. For as they are known to us they are simple and no explanations are needed, but we look at the deeper meanings of each command we will find reasons as to why I say we are continually breaking them.

Jesus said: “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your soul.” This is the first and great commandment and the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as you love yourself” on these two commandments depend all the law and prophets. So it is this love that should govern all we say and do, yet we often disobey the second one time and time again, by judging others. We tend to put the blame on the whole group instead of the individual who is to blame.

It is in loving your neighbour that things will come right in South Africa. However, we all have our prejudgments and paint the whole group with the same tar brush. It is about time that we look at the individual and not at the group as a whole. There are far more good people of all race and creed in this world than there are bad ones. In reaching out and understanding where we and others come from, we find solutions to many of the problems that exist. It is in understanding others that we can get to know why they act the way they do.

Christ never judged people He came into contact with, be it Jew or Gentile, He showed His love for all. Let us follow His example and obey the second commandment.

Vandale teiken tekens The men who cried wolf Vandale het toegeslaan op die R71 pad net buite Tzaneen in die rigting van Venbeck. N Groot waarskuwingsteken is platgery en ‘n spoedbordjie, so ent weg op dieselfde pad, is afgebreek en plat langs die pad in die veld gelos.

Dit wil voorkom asof die booswigte met hul voertuig teen die waarskuwingsbord aan die kant van die pad

gaan stop het, en met hul motor die bordjie omgestoot het. “Hierdie ouens was heel moontlik onder die invloed van drank en het dit goed gedink om hulself te vermaak deur hierdie borde om te stoot,” het een munisipale werker aan Bulletin vertel. “Die padtekens langs die R71 is die eindom van SANRAL en dit is teen die wet om hulle te vandaliseer of te verwyder. Die skade wat hier aangerig is gaan nog meer geld uit die belastingbetaler se sak jaag en kon mense se lewens in gevaar gestel het.”

Alhoewel daar teen druktyd nog geen leidrade oor die identiteit van die kwaaddoeners was nie, is die polisie in kennis gestel en sal daar verdere ondersoeke ingestel word.

Panic shot through the Rubbervale farming community last Thursday evening when a vehicle with three individuals was spotted driving through the area proclaiming that a farm attack had just occurred. Community members took to their various WhatsApp community safety groups requesting assistance from their community safety officers. The CPF units in the area quickly responded and local security companies as well as emergency services and the local SAPS were placed on high alert.

Following a very lengthy investigation and two hours’ worth of frantic searching, it was discovered that the three men were intoxicated and had thought it a good idea to drive through the farms between Gravelotte and Letsitele shouting “farm attack,

farm attack” over a loud speaker system. Their vehicle was traced and a registration obtained from the lodge where they were staying in the area. Police are following up on the matter as they do not take the actions of these men lightly.

“The panic that these hooligans caused among an already edgy community is unacceptable and needs to be dealt with by the strictest of means,” said Willie Smit of the Ofcolaco CPF. “There is currently so much tension in the area with farm attacks and house robberies that we cannot afford to waste valuable resources on drunken pranks. It is very irresponsible and extremely dangerous. You are playing with lives here and we as a community do not find that amusing.”

Taste of Tzaneen fees 2017 begin bekend stel, wat in talle dorpe oor die landheen reeds elke Saterdag plaasvind en ‘n welkome fiks- en gesonheidsbewustheid skep, sal dit ‘n ander storie wees. Benewens ‘n hondekompetisie was daar ook ‘n staproete wat honde en hul mense kon volg. Tussen snuffel en snuif het die honde nuwe maats gemaak, salig onbewus daarvan dat hulle om ‘n kroon meeding! Die inskrywingsfooi was honde- en kattekos, wat Maandag as skenking aan die DBV oorhandig is. Ander diere-betrokkenheid was die perdevertoning van die Knoxies.

Die damestee met ‘n Gatsby-tema het Belinda van den Bergh as spreekster gehad wat haar tema (“Smaak en sien hoe goed die Here is”) gepas by die Taste of Tzaneen-tema aangehaak het. Die helfte van die inkomste het aan Tshega Bedieninge gegaan. Gaste het ‘n ware “high tea” genuttig en is vermaak deur die Yadah aanbiddingsdansgroep en Tshega-skool se koor.

Tydens die middag-etensuur van Vrydag en Saterdag was daar ‘n oestafel in die Le’Thaba Restaurant met tafels wat gekreun het onder keurige lekkernye in Fairview Hotel se kombuis voorberei. Janco Blignaut, ‘n Gr 10-leerling van die Hoërskool Merensky het met strelende klassieke klavierklanke die gaste se tyd in die restaurant ‘n belewenis gemaak. Saterdag het Bobbi Gerber met klavier en sang die rustige atmosfeer in die restaurant voortgesit.

Saterdag het voorts ‘n suksesvolle gholftoernooi opgelewer asook die opening van ‘n nuwe broodboomroete by Fairview Hotel. ‘n Broodboomkenner het sy kennis met belangstellendes gedeel. Vir plaaslike skrywers is daar ook tyd ingeruim tydens ‘n bekendstelling en erkennings-geleentheid.

Taste of Tzaneen Fest 2017 se organiseerders en bemarkers wil hiermee ALLE stalletjie-houers, borge en kunstenaars van harte bedank vir vrywillige en gemoedelike deelname.

Elke inset word waardeer en hoog aangeslaan. Die voorneme is om met elke volgende jaar, nuwe hoogtes te bereik en groter betrokkenheid van die publiek te bewerkstellig.

Die datum van Taste of Tzaneen Fest 2018 is geoormerk vir 2-3 November. Merk die datum sodra die nuwe dagboek in jou hande is! Tot aanstaande jaar – dieselfde plek, maar meer en groter!

Vertonings, stalletjies, te ete en te drinke, diere-manewales – dit was alles deel van verlede naweek se Taste of Tzaneen Fest 2017, wat by Fairview Hotel gehou is. Alhoewel die opkoms, ten spyte van weke se bemarking en advertensie, heelwat skraler was as wat gehoop is, was dit ‘n vol program met die kleurvolle verskeidenheid en afwisseling wat by ‘n reënboognasie pas.

Die kinders kon gesigte laat verf, op springkastele baljaar en twee leeuwelpies van Letaba River Lodge bekyk. Vir die gesondheidsbewustes was daar stalletjies en aanbiedinge.

Vir die dorstiges ‘n biertent, plaaslik gebroude bier en jenewer, mojitos en gesonde, yskoue tamatiesap – laasgenoemde ‘n nuwe produk van ZZ2.

Van die vertonings wat aangebied is, was Gedagtes in my Posbus, met Lizelle Pienaar, Anriette van Rooyen en Martinette Muller (Vrydagaand, 3 November), Wat van die Steinway? met Mari Weber en drie mede-spelers (Saterdagmiddag, 4 November) en Saterdagaand Framus, die plaaslike pop/ rockgroep met drie uiters begaafde musici wat enige dag kan vergelyk met popgroepe wat vir groot stadsgehore speel.

Buite by die swembad, is ‘n Afro-atmosfeer geskep met Lawrence Ndhlovu se gospel en kwaito klanke, asook Mpho and Mates se Afro pop/jazz. Sondagmiddag in die restaurant was ‘n rustige afsluiting met Mengelmusici – sewe kunstenaars wat luisterliedjies en klassieke gunstelinge laat klink het in kombinasies van fluit en klavier, kitaar en stem, klavier en stem en stemme harmonieus saam in duo en trio.

Saterdagoggend se pretdraf het ongelukkig ‘n skamele opkoms getoon, maar wanneer Andre en Marinda Thomas met gaste Linda en Louis Changuion.

There is magic in this fairy forest There’s a fairy forest in the Magoebaskloof at Stanford Farm diagonally opposite Stanford Lake College off the R71. Follow the footprint signs along the part dirt, part cement road to Colleen Ballenden’s peaceful and beautiful home surrounded by an indigenous forest.

Colleen ran a nursery school called Footprints many years ago, has retained the sign as a marker to her home, and has turned her love of children, magic and a lifelong love of fairies into taking them exploring in her indigenous fairy forest.

Children from age four to 12 will delight in fairy godmother Colleen firing up their imagination, asking questions and letting them come to their own conclusions.

Children have seen fairies riding on butterflies’ wings, they find fairy houses, fairy swings, fairy seats and they listen to holes in the gnarled old trees and hear whatever their imagination wishes them to hear. Colleen says that her intention is to uplift people within the peace frame. At the en-

trance to the fairy forest, Colleen asks the children to be quiet and to tread softly on the fallen brown leaves.

The farm has been in Colleen’s family for just over a century and the forest has remained untouched since that time. Not only does Colleen let the children’s imagination run riot but the hour long walk is also educational. She identifies the indigenous trees that include white stinkwood, yellowwood, kiepersol, strangler fig as well as orchids and forest vines. Colleen explains how the strangler figs, slowly over decades, strangle an indigenous tree until it crashes down dead. The tree is left to rot and turns to dust as new shoots arise.

Huge mushrooms are growing on one fallen tree and this forms various stage levels for the fairy theatre productions.

the days of machinery. However the forest has remained untouched since Colleen’s grandfather bought the farm.

After the fairy forest walk Colleen takes the children through her beautiful home and into the sunny courtyard. This courtyard has miniature fairy statues, little ponds and there’s magic everywhere.

The tour continues to the healing room where Colleen does her relaxing foot reading, mainly for adults. Her recent success is foot reading via Skype. Clients sent seven photos of their feet in order for her to conduct foot readings.

The magical tour goes down into the reading room, the children’s rooms and further garden delights that are geared towards relaxation and are a child’s paradise. A walk through the fairy forest is by appointment only and the weather must be good. Colleen takes a maximum of five children and parents are also welcome. Jessica Dos Ramos Abreu, a grade 9 learner of Merensky High School, competed in the Bosveld Kunsfees dance section at Curro Polokwane on 4 November.

This talented dancer received a gold medal for contemporary (94%) and a platinum for hip hop (98%). She also received the Best Personality trophy.

Plasie cyclists move mountains Merensky High School’s cyclists continued their excellent performance this weekend at the final Limpopo Mountain Bike Marathon Series at Stanford Lake College on Saturday, 4 November. In the 20km female u.18 race, Amelia Middleton achieved 1st position and Laryn Bezuidenhout came 2nd. Annalene

Rood (u.14) managed an 8th position. In the male u.14 race, Shaun de Beer came 5th with John-Robert Honnibal in 15th position.

In the grueling 40km male u.16 race, Bevan Muller led the Plasie pack with a 2nd place, while Armand Cronje came 4th. Sheldon Muller took a 3rd place, and Kyle Jansen van

Rensburg a 9th, in the male u.18 race. Armand and Sheldon both experienced technical bike difficulties, but still managed excellent placings. After the final leg of the series, Limpopo Provincial Marathon Colours were issued to Sheldon Muller (1st u.18) and Armand Cronjé (1st u.16).

Final bell for Plasie grade 12’s At Merensky High School the final grade 12 prize giving ceremony is an occasion not to be missed. A special church service set the tone, whereafter several interested parties had the opportunity to wish the class of 2017 all the best for the final exam and their future.

This year the matrics were delighted with visits from SAVF Kleuterskool and Dr. Annecke, Tzaneen and Duiwelskloof Primary Schools.

73 Blue Certificates, 93 Silver Certificates, 74 Colours and 36 Trophies were awarded for excellence in Academics, Sports and Culture.

Special awards went to Chris Bill – “Boere-ordentlikheid”, Dené Wolmarans – Service and Commitment, Noko Malatji – Sportsman of the Year and Riëtte Warmenhoven and Marlu McLean – Exceptional Re-

search. Marlu McLean also received the EC Loyalty Award as well as the Plasie of the Year trophy.

Academic Honorary Medals were awarded to Marlu McLean (bronze), Belinda Nzadi (silver) and Valeriia Avdysh (gold).

Valeriia Avdysh, carrier of the title 2017 Dux Learner, received trophies for best achievement in English Home Language, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Mathematics. She also received Academic Colours for all 8 of her subjects being above 80%, boasting with an aggregate of 92,6%. Valeriia was awarded Colours for tennis as well as Double Colours for her gold President’s Award.

To conclude the ceremony, every grade 12 had the privilege of ringing the cow bell which they rang in grade 8 for the first time - now as a final goodbye to Plasieland.

riding 5 clear jumper rounds. Pfunanane Ministries started their equestrian programme for the academy children in 2015, and they focus on building confidence through solid equitation and good horsemanship, as well as teaching the children to care for a variety of other animals.

Two brothers, Thoriso and Nyiko Terwey were recently crowned as the two best bowlers in the U/25 Men’s category at the Limpopo Singles Championships.

Thoriso took top spot while Nyiko claimed second position. Patricia Baragwanath fought her way into the final of the Senior Ladies competition and landed a hard fought second place for her efforts while Damien Stefaans clinched a third position in the Men’s Open Championship. The Men’s Open Plate Competition was dominated by Zane “The Main Man” Fanie who walked away as the victor. In total, the Duiwelskloof Bowling Club clinched five top spots in the Limpopo championships.

The blind lead the blind Last weekend, Stanford Lake College held their annual ‘Introduction to Adventure Racing’ for the Grade 8 students. Starting on Friday afternoon, the group were divided into their racing teams. They had to give their team a name and then work on a war cry.

After supper, the teams introduced themselves to the rest of the group and laid down the challenge with their war cries. This moved them into their first activity – night navigation. The teams had to navigate with a map to find points on campus, in the fastest time. All the activities for the weekend were timed, with the fastest time at the end being declared the overall winner.

On Saturday there were 11 activities which the teams could complete in any order. These were tasks like ‘Sink or Swim’ – anything in or on the water; ‘Rock and Rope’ – climbing; ‘Ride and Roll’ – trail running; kaskar (go-cart) and environmental challenge – getting rid of some lilies and reeds.

The morning activities were completed in nasty weather, but the spirit of the teams was good and they kept at it like true Badgers. There was only a difference of 13 minutes between the first 3 teams after the whole day of racing and it came down to the final event on Sunday.

The Sunday’s main event was the Grand Challenge where all the activities were thrown combined into one final race. The groups started with a go-cart leg that went into a run to collect the raft oars, rafting on the lake, a run to get the Synergies, paddle, run around the tower, put the boats back and sprint to the finish.

The Trophy winners were announced and are as follows: Night Navigation – Down Town Crew; Green Challenge – Ferocious Ferrets; Ride and Roll – Gundus; Rock and Rope – Woolley Buggers; Sink or Swim – Gundus; Simunye Challenge (team spirit) – Buffalo Wings; and the overall winners for the weekend were The Gundus.

Salt for light Faaria Rhemtula, a grade 9 student at Stanford Lake College, participated in the Limpopo regional Eskom Expo.

It took place on Saturday the 19th of August and there were 321 participants. Rhemtula was one of 14 students who received gold, and one of the 18 pupils chosen to go through to the international science fair (ISF) in Johannesburg. She tested whether salt water could be used as an alternative source to generate electricity, and designed a light powered by saltwater.

The brainy badger David Pullinger (Gr 10) achieved an outstanding joint 1st place for Limpopo in the National finals of the Computer Programming Olympiad. A total of 6 711 pupils sat the first round and he was one of 478 to go through to the national second round in which he came up tops for Limpopo.

Larries learn life skills Laerskool Tzaneen Primary’s grade six pupils left during the first week of the new school term to Schoemansdal near Louis Trichardt for their annual Adventure Camp. It is a weeklong skills development and adventure camp likened to what was previously known as “veld skool”. Four teachers, Steven Cremore, Greyling Harmse, Gerda Steenkamp and Beronice Avontuur accompanied the pupils on their trip.

The pupils are divided into groups which are picked at random meaning that the kids are removed from their comfort zones and forced to work together as a unit with fellow pupils they are not usually acquainted with. The groups then complete activities such as obstacle courses, raft building, spider hunts and tracking adventures. They sleep out in tents on one of the

mountain ranges and learn about survival and their place in the environment.

By the time the course is completed, the students will have learnt basic life skills and returned home a few friends richer. “It is a very important event for the youngsters as it teaches them to mingle and educates them on their environment. We want to thank Johan van Dijkhorst, the camp leader, for taking such good care of the youngsters who accommodates our school’s pupils every year.”

For the avid running enthusiast, a local trend has taken hold which could offer some respite from the doldrums of a working week. A large group of runners now gather on the picturesque Blueberry Heights farm in Magoebaskloof, on the first Saturday morning of every month to indulge in a well-deserved breath of

fresh air as part of the Magoebaskloof Farm Run. The five kilometre route takes the group around Ebenezer dam and Stanford lake before winding through some breath taking stretches of pine forest. Those who do not feel up to the challenge of running the distance, are encouraged to enjoy

a brisk walk in good, safe company.
