When more than a thousand people gathered in the centre of Tzaneen’s driving range on Monday afternoon, something remarkable happened. “For that moment we were truly one community standing united, side-by-side for the greater cause. What we achieved there on Monday evening superseded a protest march against farm attacks. It was a desperate call by people from all walks of life for peace in our country, regardless of race, colour or creed. We won our community back.” The #BlackMonday campaign was organised in various municipalities across the country, not to raise awareness around the high murder rate and the increase in farm attacks, but to force the government to listen and react. “We don’t need awareness campaigns, everyone is aware of the problem, we need action. This is what was behind #BlackMonday.” South Africa suffered a total of 19 016 murders during the past year. That equates to 52 deaths at the hands of violent criminals per day, making South Africa the 136th least peaceful country in the world according to the Economics and Peace (IEP) Global Peace Index. According to the IEP, the total economic impact

of violence containment in the country is R830 billion, R15,656 per person. This is the 33rd highest cost of all 162 countries covered by the researchers. When it comes to societal safety and security, South Africa ranks as the 15th worst country in the world, and the 8th most violent with a murder rate of 52 per 100,000 people. These are the latest figures from the previous year and may very well change when the new numbers are updated. “We know that one day of action is by no means the way forward and will most probably not have a very big impact, but it is a start to something bigger. It proves that the safety concerns of the people of this country stretches across the entire demographic. Crime knows no colour – neither does love.” Watch the spectacular video footage of the #BlackMonday gathering on our website at www.bulletin.us.com or visit our Facebook page for more images and footage from earlier that afternoon. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin. us.com

‘Faith in humanity restored’ Contributions and donations have been pouring in for the family who lost their home and possessions to a fire on Saturday morning. The fire which started at approximately 10:00 in the main bedroom of their Middelweg home, robbed Jacob Ngobesa and his wife Margaret of all they owned in the space of just over an hour. Jacob told Bulletin that he was busy washing up in the bathroom when his youngest daughter ran up to the door and shouted that she heard crickets in the ceiling of her bedroom. Thinking it was a little strange, Jacob went to investigate. “The smoke was billowing up from under the closed bedroom door. I knew something was not right and when I entered the room I was met with a wall of fire consuming one half of the furthest wall,” he remembered. “I ran to fetch the garden hose in an attempt to fight the flames, but there was no water pressure and so I shouted for help.” Neighbours came running to their aid and called the Mo-

pani Fire Department as they tried in vain to contain the blaze. The children were rushed from the house and stood by their father watching their home being consumed before their eyes. There was nothing anybody could do and soon the fire had spread to all areas of the house. A loud bang was heard as the geyser crashed to the floor and the roof caved under its own weight as one by one the rafters gave way. “The fire brigade arrived an hour and a half after they were summoned and when they finally managed to get here, it was way too late and the house was gone,” said one frustrated neighbour. “Why did they not respond on time when we called for help?” Bulletin spoke to the Mopani District Fire Chief, Kobus Visser, after we were unable to reach the spokesperson for the district. He acknowledged that his team was unable to attend the Middleweg fire as timeously as they wished too, but offered an explanation.

“At the time of the fire, we were attending various accident scenes on Magoebaskloof as well as a fire at a house in Dan. There was a total of seven motor vehicle accidents in just two hours that morning so our resources were spread very thin,” explained Visser. “It is always very saddening for us as fire fighters when we know that someone is in need and we are just physically not able to respond because of tending to another emergency. It is very unfortunate and our condolences go out to the family.” On Tuesday morning Bulletin launched a “Call to Action” campaign online, asking Tzaneen’s citizens to open their hearts to the plight of this family. Minutes later the first donations were dropped off at our offices. For the rest of that morning and all the way through to the time of going to press, members of the community have paid us a visit, dropping their donations at our doorstep. Sugarhill and Sugarloaf stores came to the party along with Sleebok, the SAVF and Rotary. Geyer Faurie Computer Services donated a personal computer to help Jacob get his business back on its feet. For those who still wish to assist, please contact Bulletin or the Sugar stores for more information. “My brother,” said Jacob as he and Margaret took receipt of their parcels on Wednesday morning. “Nobody can tell me that God is not real. Thank you, thank you, thank you!” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Law firm employee arrested for fraud A former employee of Johan Steyn Attorneys in Tzaneen, Irene Pienaar (51) appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s court on Wednesday afternoon on charges of fraud. She was released on R2 000 bail. Bulletin spoke to Johan Steyn shortly after the court hearing. According to Steyn, Pienaar was employed at his firm between the period of 2014 and 2016 as an accounting official. During her pe-

riod of employment it is alleged that Pienaar fraudulently transferred small amounts of money from Steyn’s business account to her own personal account. “She was very clever in the way that she conducted the transactions,” explained Steyn. “It is very important that we stipulate that the money was not transferred from our trust account, but from the business account. We

need the public to understand that the money in the Trust account is safe and untouched. It can be very misleading to the uniformed but we assure our clients that their money is safe.” In total, Steyn alleged that around R400 000 was transferred from his business account to Pienaar’s personal account in very small amounts that went unnoticed over the course of the two years. It was only by chance that

an auditor picked up a strange deposit made into an unknown account and began investigating. It was then that the other deposits were picked up and the special crimes investigative unit alerted. The Hawks completed their investigations and Pienaar was later arrested before appearing in court. Her next appearance will be on the 7th of December. — Jeff Jackson jeff@bulletin.us.com

First Paintings in the Park launches It was a drizzly and cold day when Paintings in the Park launched its first exhibition in the park in front of the Haenertsburg Post Office on Sunday. Despite the inclement weather there were some 85 paintings, six exhibitors from the village and Polokwane and five paintings were sold. Ten percent of all art sold goes to the Garden Cottages, a complex of apartments for senior citizens in the village. With this combined brainchild of Pieter de Beer and Renier Oosthuizen, Paintings in the Park will become a fixture on the last Sunday of every month, weather permitting. An exception will be made in December as

many artists are away over Christmas and New Year. The painters will therefore hold Paintings in the Park to coincide with the village hall Christmas Market on the 8th and 9th of December. Pieter began his career as a flight steward for SAA. He says that since then he’s never stopped rolling. He became the training officer for Interflora countrywide. Pieter had florist shops in Pretoria, then Port Elizabeth and then Knysna. He’d build up these businesses and then sell them. Pieter then worked at Emperor’s Palace near Johannesburg for a decade. He moved on

Some 85 artworks were on display at the first Paintings in the Park.

to running a guest house in Marloth Park. There he took overseas visitors to the Kruger National Park for photographic opportunities mainly bird photography. He then changed course slightly and moved into catering and became manager for VIP caterers in Pretoria. Then followed a period of running a guesthouse in Volksrust for friends. Renier studied at, what’s now known as, Pro Arte in Pretoria. Renier was born in Pretoria, moved to present day Zimbabwe for a decade and then to Mokopane. Renier has been visiting the Haenertsburg area for the past 20 years as he feels at home in the mist. When Renier and Pieter met almost two years ago, Renier convinced Pieter to move to the area. The lived initially in the village itself but found that the solitude and peace afforded them on a small holding outside the village suited their creative side better. Both were born with art in their veins. Pieter has done stained glass, mosaic, wood carving and pottery and says that stained glass would be his art of choice. Besides the monthly Paintings in the Park the duo are planning a five day art course in oils and acrylics.

Fun filled cooking lessons

Ninia Knott (right) with Kim Wacker as the duck is prepared.

From food jamming to learning how to cook duck, Ninia Knott’s cooking courses at the Eatery kitchen have become the latest on the “to do list” in Haenertsburg. Ninia is also chairperson of slow food Haenertsburg. With a cozy atmosphere, great company and a full glass of wine, furthering your cooking skills at the Eatery has never been more fun. “I started lessons for people as a fun private function concept for occasions such as birthdays and bachelorettes.

The Eatery kitchen really lends itself to these sorts of functions, with its open plan design and vibey atmosphere with a stunning view. Local Kim Wacker and I decided to collaborate on duck cooking lessons, to encourage people to buy fresh produce from our local farmers and growers like Kim.” The cooking lessons are also great for teambuilding and year end functions. After meals have been prepared, everyone gathers to dine over their culinary achievements.

Malaria conference venue announced Every 60 seconds a child under five years of age dies of malaria across the globe. In 2015 there were 214 million cases of malaria infections reported worldwide with 70% of deaths from malaria in children under the age of five. Shockingly, 90% of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. But, it is a problem that can be solved, and through the help of humanitarian, Kingsley Holgate who inspired the birth of the “Goodbye Malaria” programme, malaria is now being combatted more effectively through the promotion of information. With the rainy season fast approaching, fears have risen about a malaria outbreak in the Limpopo province. Lo-

cal hospitals have stated that although they have received malaria patients in the past month, their admittance has not been significantly higher than usual. Earlier this year a similar panic was caused when word spread about an outbreak in May. This was fuelled by the lack of malaria vaccines in the area as a result of a tremendous increase in infections in neighbouring countries such as Mozambique. The Prospective Lowveld Rotary Club of Tzaneen invites you to join them for a Q&A session with Malaria Expert, Steve Knowles, from the Goodbye Malaria organization, on Thursday the 9th of November. The venue has been set for the Aptitude Conference Centre at

the Hotel@Tzaneen and the proceedings will commence at 17:30 for 18:00. To book your seats please contact Tracey Leppan on 083-968-0902. Goodbye Malaria is an initiative started by African entrepreneurs who believe that African creativity can solve one of Africa’s biggest problems. The initiative helps to raise funds that go directly to support on-the-ground malaria elimination programs in Mozambique, spraying houses to protect families from contracting malaria. Goodbye Malaria also seeks to inspire people to join their fight against malaria, by educating them to understand that elimination is ultimately possible. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Veteran SAPS members treated The South African Police Service spent the day with their retired veterans on the 12th of October during a special luncheon at the Tzaneen Country Club. The event was in honour of retired officers above the age of 70 who had served in the police force diligently and were now enjoying the solice of retirement. The Acting Mayor of Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), Councillor Star Mbhalati, appreciated the organising committee for their choice of venue and the organizing of the décor and meals. Limpopo ECF Deputy Chairperson Col Hlungwani outlined the purpose of the function. The organising committee as per mandate invited elders who are 70 years and above within Limpopo Province. The retired police officials’ forum is a non-political organization, established with the aim of ensuring unity and assisting one another through care givers. Also in attendance was the Limpopo Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Maj Gen Morakaladi.

She thanked the Limpopo ECF chairperson Lt Gen Malete and his committee for having organised a successful spectacular event to honour their veterans and families of their fallen heroes and heroines. She further said being a police officer is the highest calling in the entire public service. Focusing at the transformation and development of the SAPS over the years she said that retired police officials have contributed enormously to the current success of the SAPS. They have played tremendous influence on them and engineered and propelled the police service to new heights. It was her wish that all serving police officers be enticed by this big event and make it a habit or a norm to be loyal to the service and work until retirement. It is amazing to experience retired police officials as being vibrant after so many years. She said that it was apparent that they will continue to grow from strength to strength.

The guest speaker on the day was renowned phycologist, Prof Theo Burger, who delivered the keynote address. In his talk, he compared the statue of David, by the renaissance master, Michelangelo with the project that retired police officials have taken on. Once the formalities had been put aside, the SAPS brass band blessed the audience with some top-shelf gospel music which seemed to ignite the gathering as the elderly took to the dance floor for an afternoon of much needed fun. — Jeff Jackson

Local dancers rake in medals Marthinus Grobler, Eyre Koekemoer

Twenty five aspiring young local artistes took their talents to the capital city recently to take part in the South African Dance School Championships (SADSC). It was there in Pretoria that The Dance Place made an impression on the national judging panel and the dance fraternity as a whole. The SA Dance School Championships is one of the oldest, largest and most modern dance festivals and competitions, specifically for dance schools and young dancers in South Africa, and is held annually in various regions with a National Finals. During the past two

weeks, more than 5 000 dancers from the ages of 3-years and up enjoy and compete in front of family and friends in various age sections on stage around the country. The two judges this year were extremely strict while judging this competition and the dancers had to dance their hearts out. The Dance Place’s dancers did not disappoint and returned home to Tzaneen with a total of 37 accolades including six silver medals, 18 High Silver medals, 10 gold medals, one High Gold medal and two special awards. The Dance Place entered 35 items of which there were 24 solos and 11 group entries in different dance styles and levels of competition.

Janco sprei musikale vlerke

Volgens sy danstutor, Annemieke Osmers van The Dance Place, is Liam ‘n uitsonderlik

talentvolle danser.

Wilma Henn, terwyl mev. Susan Lourens as vakbondverteenwoordiger optree.

We definitely encourage everyone to enter teams for next year’s event,” said Gert Rabie. Larries swem more wéér

— Joe Dreyer
