Childminder charged A 53-year old owner of a day care centre in Phalaborwa is facing a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm after she allegedly assaulted a 3-year old boy. Elize Janse van Rensburg was confronted by a parent of one of the children attending her day care, ‘Tjiff en Tjaff’ on Friday afternoon.

It is alleged that the mother of the young boy investigated her son’s complaints about not wanting to stay at the school. It is then that she discovered bruises and red marks over his body including his bum. She immediately confronted Janse van Rensburg who was subsequently arrested that same afternoon and charged with assault GBH. On Monday morning she appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate’s court before Magistrate Thulisile Mthethwa. Attorney Chris Kohler represented Janse van Rensburg. Members of the Ba-Phalaborwa Victim Empowerment Programme were in attendance during the proceedings to offer support to the young victim and his mother.

The case was postponed to Tuesday as the state prosecutor, Michael Moretsele, called for witness testimony from social worker Lawrence Shiburi. In court Shiburi claimed that the day care had not been registered with the Department of Social Services as was required by law. Following an emotional

day of cross examining and arguments, the case was again postponed to Wednesday.

The defendant was granted R7 000 bail and released on condition that she surrender her passport and not leave Phalaborwa without consent until her next court appearance on the 21st of November this year. Magistrate Mthethwa said that Janse van Rensburg was not a flight risk despite the prosecution’s arguments to have her bail denied.

In the meantime it is reported that Tjiff en Tjaff Day Care centre has been closed indefinitely and that the remaining children at the centre had already been adequately relocated. This story has led to a call by the department of social services to all parents to ensure that they check the documentation of any day care centre to ensure that it has been registered as an Early Childhood Development centre (ECD). Fire Department has no radio communications Currently the fire brigade has no way of communicating with each other during an emergency. The fire truck crews who operate within the various municipalities managed by the Mopani District Municipality, have no radio communications due to a relay tower that was hit by lighting more than six months ago.

In an emergency situation, once the trucks leave the fire station, there is no way for the fire chief or command centre to communicate with the crews or coordinate operations.

Firemen have to stay in touch with their chief through the use of their own cell phones and at their own cost while attending an emer-

gency. According to our source, the relay tower can be restored at a minimal cost of less than R20 000, but funds are not being allocated for this purpose.

The problem has allegedly been brought to the attention of the Mopani District a few months ago, but nothing has been done to rectify the matter.

One of our sources alleged that because the Mopani District Fire Brigade does not receive funding directly from the state, such as in the case of the Working on Fire Programme, the money is funnelled away by the district municipality to pay their overdue Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) accounts. The

Working on Fire programme allegedly receives around R800 million directly from the state to perform their duties.

“The money disappears into the Equitable Share account. We are supposed to receive in the region of R50 million, but we never see that money as it is funnelled out of the equitable share account into the overdue MIG accounts which in turn have been run dry through misappropriation by the top management.”

Fire fighters have told Bulletin that they often use their own money to buy replacement parts for their fire trucks without being reimbursed. One fire fighter who

requested anonymity for fear of persecution said that there have been cases where he and a few of his crew mates clubbed together to buy a new tyre for one of the trucks. “If we did not replace that tyre ourselves, we would have had to wait three or four months for Mopani to approve the purchase. We cannot place our community’s lives in danger because of red tape and protocol that prevents us from doing our jobs.”

Bulletin has sent an enquiry to the spokesperson of the Mopani District Municipality, Neil Shikwambana and will publish his responses in our next edition.

UPDATE: R4,7m for Phala roads maintenance Phalaborwa’s municipality has assured their residents that they are working on restoring all the roads in their town, and have in fact started work already this week. This only a few days after Bulletin reported on the dastardly state of the town’s roads infrastructure which has seen significant deterioration due to lack of maintenance over the course of the last few years.

Some roads have become completely inaccessible and residents have reported substantial damages to their vehicles because of these treacherous streets. One woman went as far as filling the massive potholes in front of her home in Nollie Bosman Street, with cement, to enable entry to her property. “It is absolutely disgraceful and points to their nonchalant attitude towards the needs of their rate paying public,” she said.

But according to Jonas Mahesu, spokesperson for the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality (BPM), there is an active roads maintenance crew with an annual budget of R4 781 469

tasked with keeping the town’s roads in good shape. Mahesu also said that the municipality has been working on restoring the aging infrastructure since 2014. “The current administration has a plan to address the ageing infrastructure both electrical and roads. From the 2014/2015 financial year the municipality has done major roads rehabilitation.”

He further stated that there are three types of maintenance schedules namely; routine maintenance, planned maintenance and daily maintenance. “The daily maintenance is when we attend to potholes on a daily basis,” he explained.

It appears as though some municipal employees did not receive that memo. Last week we drove along one of the main routes between the airport and the high school (2,5 kilometres) and we lost count at 63 potholes. If there is a maintenance budget dedicated to the roads infrastructure, what is it being spent on?

We asked Mahesu whether the maintenance schedule in-

cluded the upkeep of the pavements and how often this was done. He did not respond. We also asked him why the old bicycle roads have not been restored, a question he also chose not to respond to. When we asked why the municipality had allowed their roads to deteriorate to the state it currently stands, he avoided the question and listed some of the streets they had allegedly completely rehabilitated.

“The maintenance team is currently working on the following streets as per the progress [sic] Frans du Toit and Tulbach from the 11th of September 2017 to the 28th of September 2017. The scope of the works are patching and sealing,” he said.

Ironically this work started two days after receipt of an official media enquiry from Bulletin. We will visit Tulbach Street this morning and report on our findings in our next edition.

‘Protests are not about service delivery’ There have been major disruptions in the Bolobedu and Ka-Kgapane areas following service delivery protests by the residents in the Makwasele areas. On Monday this week, residents took to the streets and barricaded all routes leading to and from the areas with bricks, rocks and burning logs. Motorists commuting between the affected areas and Tzaneen or Modjadjiskloof, did so at their own peril and were forced to turn back or pay and admission fee for the protestors to allow them access.

By Tuesday morning the situation had escalated as protestors were stoning passing vehicles and local SAPS units were deployed to restore order. Shopkeepers in the affected areas closed their operations for fear of looters. Domestic workers and school children were unable to leave their homes and one nurse stationed at Sekgosese explained that she and fellow ambulance crew had to pay a small amount to protestors to allow them safe access through the rubble.

“It is worth noting that these are more of criminal elements than service delivery protests,” said Lovers Maenetje, spokesperson for the Greater Letaba Municipality while addressing concerns of some of the residents in Modjadjiskloof. “These people were engaged twice to find out what their problems are and solutions were put on the table, but they decided that they are not ready to listen and are now holding people at ransom requesting money to pass which must not be tolerated and confused for service delivery protests.”

At the time of going to print yesterday (Thursday) there were no signs of the protests letting up any time soon. The communities are frustrated at their local government who have continued to fail them.

Tzaneen and Modjadjiskloof residents are urged to avoid the Bolebedu and Kgapane areas and seek alternative routes should they absolutely have to travel into these areas.

Sjibbolet Jean de la Fontaine, die Franse digter, het hierdie besondere fabel vertel. Daar was eenmaal ‘n honger wolf wat besluit het om ‘n wolf in herdersklere te word. Met ‘n herdershoed, herdersklere, herdersstaf en selfs ‘n herderspyp tussen sy tande, het hy een aand versigtig verby die herder en sy hond tussen die skape ingesluip. Die skape het gedink dat dit die herder was, wat na hulle veiligheid omsien. Die wolf het by homself gedink: “As ek net die herder se stem kan namaak, sal ek baie van die skape kan weglei en opvreet.” Maar toe hy sy bek oopmaak en begin praat het almal wakkergeskrik - die ware herder, sy hond en die skape. Hulle het die wolf se stem herken, ondanks sy herdersdrag.

Arme wolf, verstrik in sy herdersdrag, het gestrompel en geval en kon nie wegvlug nie... en dit het sy einde beteken!

So is Jakob met die bokvelletjies om sy hande ook jare gelede uitgevang toe sy blinde pa vir hom gesê het: “Die stem, dis Jakob se stem, maar die hande, dis Esau se hande” (Genesis 27:22). Sy stem het hom verraai!

Jare later het die manne van Gilead elke vlugteling wat ontken het dat hy van Efraim is, aan sy uitspraak uitgeken. Ons lees in Rigters 12:6: “Sê ‘n bietjie, Sjibbolet!”, maar dan sê die vlugteling: “Sibbolet.” Hy kon dit nie uitspreek nie. Dan word hy gegryp en doodgemaak.

In ons land word ons ook dikwels aan ons uitspraak uitgeken. Selfs al praat ons almal dieselfde taal, kom ander gou agter of jy van die Boland, Namakwaland of Gauteng is. Die invloed van die taal wat ons in ons ouerhuis praat, moenie onderskat word nie. Jesus, die goeie Herder sê tereg in Johannes 3:4: “Die skape luister na die herder se stem... die skape volg hom, omdat hulle sy stem ken.”

As ek getrou na Christus se stem luister, sal ek Hom nie net volg nie maar sal almal aan die taal wat ek praat, agterkom aan wie se kudde ek behoort. Die Bybel sê dit so mooi in Lukas 6:43: “Waar die hart van vol is, loop die mond van oor.”

God sal jou leer om Sjibbolet te sê – onder alle omstandighede!

No word on hawker pandemic The rate at which the town of Phalaborwa’s infrastructure, service delivery and general upkeep has declined in recent years is nothing short of alarming. Once voted the clean-

est town in the country, Phalaborwa’s central business district now resembles a forgotten rural village. Informal traders have occupied nearly every available metre of pavement surrounding the two major shopping centres and street mechanics have destroyed a once vibrant parking area right in the centre of one of the busiest sections of the business hub.

Hawkers prepare and serve cooked meals on open flames under gazebos wherever they see fit without fear of prosecution. Make shift barbershops shave the heads of their male patrons mere metres from these food stalls. The arrival of these hawkers and traders has led to serious concerns raised with the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality, but which have seemingly landed on deaf ears.

Bulletin has issued the spokesper-

son of the municipality, Jonas Mahesu, with an official media enquiry on the matter. In our enquiry we wanted to know what the municipal bylaws state concerning these unhygienic practices and whether designated areas have been allocated to allow for informal trading.

We requested details around the lease agreements between the municipality and the traders and asked for proof of their compliance to the various acts pertaining to the sale of food and perishable produce.

At the time of going to print, we had received no response.

Aside from the motor vehicle oil and used spare parts strewn across the areas occupied by the street mechanics, the vegetable and fruit selling traders around the new mall leave their plastic bags, wooden pallets and general waste

in the street. No policing is done to ensure adherence to the Health and Safety Act (1977).

All three municipalities which fall under the Mopani District Municipality (including Modjadjiskloof, Tzaneen and Phalaborwa) have fallen victim to the street hawker pandemic. We have received information which indicates that the majority of the goods sold by these traders is stolen property and that many of the individuals are illegal immigrants.

We will contact Mahesu again this week and will send our enquiry off to the spokesperson for the Mopani District Municipality for comment. An update will be published in our next edition.

Die revue het gestrek van Maandag tot die gala-aand wat Donderdag gehou is. ‘n Ekstra vertoning is vinnig aan mekaar geslaan vir die Vrydagaand na ‘n sosiale media oorlog oor ‘n te kort aan kaartjies uitgebreek het.

Tog was hierdie jaar se toneelstukke en “impromptu” opvoerings deur lede van die beheerliggaam en die onderwyserskorps uit die boonste rakke en het elkeen in die gehoor elke oomblik daarvan geniet.

Rainbow Pasta Salad Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 10 minutes Choose a leaner, healthier approach to a braai with lean cuts of meat and this colourful, veggie filled whole -wheat pasta salad.

Ingredients(10-12) • 500 g whole-wheat screw noodles • 2 large tomatoes, diced • 375 ml SPAR Gouda cheese, grated • ½ English cucumber, cubed • 2 sticks celery, sliced • 200 ml sunflower seeds • 410 g can SPAR sliced peaches, drained and chopped • 250 ml SPAR frozen corn (don’t cook) • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste • • • •

Dressing 250 ml SPAR peach fruit yoghurt 50 ml SPAR mango fruit chutney 10 ml hot curry powder 100 ml SPAR Chip & Salad sauce

Method 1. Well in advance of the braai, boil the noodles in plenty of salted boiling water until they are tender.

2. Tip into a colander to drain, and set aside to cool.

3. Prepare all the fruit and vegetables and toss into the cooled pasta.

4. Combine the dressing ingredients and use to bind the ingredients together and keep them moist.

5. Chill until required.

Hints and Tips Pasta-based salads can be made in advance and enjoyed the following day when the flavours have developed and the taste is improved.

Bacon-Corn Braai Sticks Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes Give your braai mielies a makeover with the addition of a bacon rasher, some wholegrain mustard and a sprinkle of cheesy seasoning.

Ingredients(10-12) • 1 punnet SPAR Freshline sweetcorn bites (12 pieces) • 250 g packet SPAR streaky bacon (12 rashers) • Whole-grain mustard • SPAR olive oil • Cheesy seasoning eg. Cheese Aromat Method 1. Rinse the corn under running tap water, then place them in a microwave-proof dish and cover with clingfilm. Microwave on 100% Power for 3 ½ minutes.

2. Wrap and stretch a rasher of bacon from short end of each corn, down the

length, and back around to the same side you began at. Spike a skewer through lengthwise, to secure the bacon at both short-ends.

3. Brush over with olive oil and liberally sprinkle over the cheese-seasoning powder. Cover and refrigerate until required.

4. Braai over moderate coals for 10-15 minutes, turning often, until the corn has light braai marks across it and the bacon is crisp.

Hints and Tips Boil half a bag of SPAR Freshline baby potatoes, and use two together on each skewer, instead of the sweetcorn.

DIY outdoor tin can drink holders Supplies Needed: - Aluminum Cans - Drill or Hammer and nail (with a 1/4” bit or a 1/4” nail) - Threaded Rod 1/4 inch - Nuts & Washers 1/4 inch (2 of each per can) - Super Glue - Extra tip: Resin • Step 1: CAREFULLY wash out your can with soap and warm water (There may be sharp edges inside the rim).

• Step 2: Hammer/sand down any metal snags around rim of the can.

Step 3: Drill a hole in the bottom of the can or take a nail and hammer a hole in the bottom.

Step 4: Place a nut on the threaded rod and then a washer. Put it on a little lower than the top of the rod.

Step 5: Add the can, bottom side down, onto the washer.

Step 6: Place another washer and nut on top, inside the can.

Step 7: Before you tighten the nuts fully, put a bit of glue between the bottom washer and the bottom of the tin.

Step 8: Twist the bolt and make it as

tight as you can!

Extra tip: Cover inside bolt and washer with resin. (a) Stand drink holders up in a pot filled with sand and make sure they are level. (b) Mixed the resin according to package directions and poured it in the bottoms of the cups…just high enough to cover the washer and bolt.

1. The steak should be at room temperature by the time it goes onto the fire — If it was/is in a fridge, take it out well in advance, and leave it in the shade or indoors.

2. Rest it in olive oil for 4 hours.

3. If you are wondering whether you have enough heat, then the answer is probably no. For these easy steps to a perfect steak to work, you need peace of mind that your coals are extremely hot. This is important.

4. Take your time when the steaks go onto the grid — Steaks cut to a thickness of 2,5 cm - 3 cm, braaied on extremely hot coals and a 10 cm grid height take about 8-10 minutes in total to become medium.

5. Turn the steaks after every 2 minutes until the 8-10 minutes is over. They are now ready, you can take them off the grid.

6. Use braai tongs, not a fork, to turn the meat.

A fork will make holes in the meat, and you might lose some juice.

7. After the first turn of the meat, you may start

salting, spicing or basting the meat. We suggest you use Braai Spice Salt and Pepper ready mix — Adding salt before this might cause the salt to draw out some of the moisture in the meat.

8. Rubbing salt or spice into the meat shortly before the braai will not draw out any significant amount of moisture and is thus fine. There is a risk that some ingredients in the spice will burn on the extremely hot coals though.

9. If you are using a closed grid (toeklaprooster) then all the steaks will obviously be turned at the same time. If you are turning the steaks one by one then turn them in order that they went onto the grill and also remove them from the gill in that order.

10. Meat needs to “rest” a bit after the braai, before you eat it.

Zzinger van 'n Braai Dag Steak and Veg Skewer You need!

600g fillet steak 20 button mushrooms 2 green peppers Picante pickled peppers Medium size onions 8 Patty pans sliced Drizzle skewer with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and red wine. Sprinkle salt, black pepper and garlic flakes to taste.

Prepare your fillet by drizzling a little bit of Worcester sauce and red wine the evening before the braai.

Cut the fillet into slices and start to skewer. Start with a fillet then veg, then onion, pepper, fillet and end with a peace of fillet, this keeps the veg from falling off.

Braai on a warm fire for 2 minutes each side. Serve with potato and cucumber salad or rice, potato wedges or chips.

Koreaanse biefstuk Vir 4 • Voorbereiding 12 minute. Gaarmaaktyd 15 minute.

Hierdie metode werk goed vir filet wat baie min vet bevat. Gebraaide stingeluie en tiemietakkies.

Jy benodig: ½ koppie sojasous en Worcester sous gemeng 3 eetlepels bruinsuiker ¼ koppie droë witwyn 3 knoffelhuisies gekap 3 teelepels gekapte rissies 1 teelepel gemaalde swartpeper 2 eetlepels avocado of olyfolie 650g filet of kruisstuk 10 stingeluie gekap So berei jy die biefstuk: 1. Meng die wyn, bruinsuiker, Worcestersous, sojasous, knoffel en rissies. Laat die vleis daarin marineer.

2. Verhit die olie en braai die stingeluie oor ‘n matige hitte in vuurvaste pan totdat dit bros raak. Voeg die marinade nou by die pan. Braai die kruisstuk oor warm kole, 2 minute beide kante tot mediumgaar.

3. Haal af die steak en laat rus vir 10 minute in die die marinade en stingeluie mengsel.

4. Sny in repies en bedien met growwe mieliepap of slaai van jou keuse.

T-Been van die vuur met doopsous Vir 4 • Voorbereiding 5 minute. Gaarmaaktyd 10 minute. • Jy het niks meer nodig as jou souse en vleis nie.

Jy benodig: Die Vleis • 4 T-Beenskywe 250g elk • Sout na smaak • Gemaalde swartpeper na smaak • Halwe suurlemoen.

Die Sous: 50g Botter ½ ui gekap 1 koppie Mrs bols chutney ½ koppie tamatiesous 4 eetlepels brandewyn 4 eetlepels Worcester sous 2 eetlepels gekapte pietersielie So maak jy dan gaar 1. Braai die T-been oor matige hitte en voeg sous en swartpeper aan beide kante na smaak.

Haal dan af en laat rus.

2. Smelt die botter en braai uie tot glasig. Voeg die chutney, brandewyn, Worcester sous en tamatiesous bymekaar. Roer die mengsel deur en verhit maar moet dit nie laat kook nie.

3. Bedien die warm sous dadelik saam met die repe T-Been direk van die vuur of op kapbord. Sprinkel pietersiele en suurlemoensap op die T-been voor bediening.

“Of ons nou braaivleis maak of net lekker eet, lekker kos is deel van wie ons as Suid-Afrikaners is!” So meen Sugarhill OK Mini Market se Hannelie van Niekerk. Tog is daar steeds ‘n konstante soektog na nuwe resepte en maniere om lekker kos net soveel lekkerder te maak.

“Alles word net meer en meer ingewikkeld man! Bly by dit wat werk en jy sal nie fout gaan nie. Jy het nie ‘n graad in voedselvoorbereiding nodig om jou mense te voer nie, en ook

nie om te braai nie.” Hannetjie meen wel dat dit belangrik is om ‘n goeie verhouding met jou slagter aan te knoop, “jy moet hom ken soos jou predikant.”

Vir die braailiefhebber offer sy so paar wenke om die aangeleentheid so bietjie meer genotvol te maak. Koop jou braaivleis direk by jou slagter en probeer dikker snitte. Dun snitte vleis is altyd taai. Koop ordentlike hout en maak seker jou vleis is altyd ‘medium-rare’ gaar gemaak. Eet jou vleis

terwyl dit nog warm is en skep ‘n lekker porsie pap en slaai op om die gereg af te rond. “Daar is nie nodig vir poeding nie, eet sommer nog ‘n stukkie vleis vir nagereg en onthou om gesellig te wees.”

Popular Plasies crowned Bouwer Bosch, well known singer songwriter from the band, Straatligkinders, was a super Master of Ceremonies. His witticisms and relaxed vibe contributed to a most enjoyable evening.

The group introduced themselves with a modern dance item, whereafter every couple took to the catwalk in casual wear, followed by formal evening attire. One of the highlights of the evening was when the 2017 sêr group joined Bouwer on stage to perform his hit-song, Sy klink soos lente.

The atmosphere was tangible when the winners were announced. The new Mr Merensky for 2017 is Delux Jooste and by his side, Miss Merensky, Ciné Venter (also Miss Personality). The title of 1st Princess goes to Bernalee Benade, who is also Miss Photogenic. Francois Smit is the 1st Prince.

Title carriers of 2nd Prince and Princess are Jéhan Goosen and Donné Oosthuizen (also bearing the new title of top debutant). Mr Photogenic is no one else than tall, dark and Mr and Miss Merensky: Ciné Venter and Delux Jooste. handsome, Heine Booysen.

On 5 September a jam-packed school hall, décor that reminded of an enchanted forest, esteemed judges and 22 popular grade 11 contestants resulted in all systems go for this years’ Mr and Miss Merensky pageant.

In the run up to the final competition the contestants had to contribute to various worthy causes in the Tzaneen area. This year the ‘top debutant’ title was also up for grabs, awarded to the best fundraiser.

A Gambit’s game it was Senior players were invited to participate in an exciting new chess initiative launched by Tzaneen Primary this past weekend. Eight Merensky chess players faced off in a series of five individual games each in order to improve their respective rankings. The games were played in the Pieter Joubert Hall.

Themba Nkuna and Lunghuile Zandile competed in the 14-15 year olds category, earning 4 points each. In the 16+

category Kevin van Onselen and Louis Haynes also earned 4 points each, while Anya Glazer and Fumo Chabalala managed 3 points each. Danielle Theron earned 2 points.

Merensky Chess Club’s newly appointed organiser, Ms Liesl van Kasterop, invites all Plasie players to join them at playing this game which is known to exercise both sides of the brain, increases creativity and problem-solving skills and improves your memory.

Nog twee trofees in die kas vir Vossies 7s Hoërskool Ben Vorster se O/15- en O/17-sewes rugbyspanne het die afgelope naweek by Hoërskool Tom Naudé se sewes dag uitgeblink. Die juniors, wat hierdie sewes-seisoen nog onoorwonne is, was weereens toernooi-wenners en hul seniors, die plaatwenners.

Die O/15-span het die dag uit die staanspoor op volle silinders gevuur.

Hulle het, in die eerste wedstryd van die dag, vir Hoërskool Hans Strijdom 33-0 kaf gedraf. In die daaropvolgende wedstryd het die Vossies Hoërskool Merensky se verdediging getoets en hulle 46-7 gewen om deur te dring na die finaal. Die Rooi

Masjien het die dag onoorwonne afgesluit deur PHS skitterend in die finaal (26-5) te klop.

Op hul beurt het O/17’s, anders as laasweek, al van die eerste wedstryd onstuitbaar gelyk. Hulle het Hoërskool Tom Naudé 47-0, in hul eerste wedstryd van die dag, gewen en was onoorwonne in die groepswedstryde. Ben Vorster het egter in die semi-finaal teen Hoërskool Piet Potgieter vasgeval en moes vir die Plaattrofeë uitspeel. Hier het hul bewys dat hul vroeë nederlaag teen Hoërskool Piet Potgieter net ‘n voetfout was en klop vir Hoërskool Ben Viljoen 52-0 in die Plaatfinaal.

Lehlogonolo Molepo en Jason Mulder van die Vossies se O/17 sewes rugbyspan met die wentrofee van die Plaatfinaal.

O/15 sewes rugbyspan van die Vossies was die toernooiwenners: Voor: Reatlegile Modiba, Bradley Makwela, Kabelo Kgohloane, Jaco Massyn en Shane Matthysen. Agter: Canseus Saayman, Alexander Gird , Renzo du Plessis, Thabang Sejake, Sean Roulston, André Hartzenberg en Léhann Marais.

O/17 sewes rugbyspan van die Vossies was die plaatwenners: Voor: Thapelo Ramoshaba.

Stanford white wash Mitchell House The Badgers made a great come back following their defeat at the hands of Ben Vorster on their home turf two weekends ago. Travelling down to Mitchell House in Polokwane, Stanford Lake College needed a win to boost their morale and save face after their 181 run Vossie-defeat.

Winning the toss, Mitchell House sent their batsmen to crease to face the Stanford bowling arsenal. In a world class display by the Abhey Patel who claimed six scalps for a mere five runs, Stanford held their hosts to 56 all out.

In their turn between the stumps, the badgers needed only 11 overs to win the game by nine wickets.

Star batsman for the visitors on the

day was Christiaan Schmidt who managed 38 runs not out.

With their win, Stanford secured their third spot on the Super League log with Ben Vorster occupying second place just five points behind log leaders, PHS on 25 points. The 2017 league officially started on the 5th of August with the final games to be played before the 25th of September.

The final will see the top two teams face off on a neutral ground in the region for the championship trophy.

Tomorrow (Saturday 16th of September) Stanford Lake will be in Polokwane again, and will come face to face against Curro Heuwelkruin. Ben Vorster will face off against Nkowankowa Cricket Club in a home game.

Drie gelyk oor Vula-streep Die voorste groep fietsryers wat die 70km padfietswedren Saterdag voltooi het. Hulle is hier afgeneem tydens die laaste 15km op die ATKV Eilandpad.

Hierdie jaar se Vula Vula fietswedren het wéér ‘n groot groep entoesiaste na die ATKV-Eiland net buite Letsitele getrek. Vanjaar se inskrywing van 434 deelnemers was so rapsie meer as verlede jaar se 415, en toon op die groei van die sport in die Mopani omgewing. Die getal is presies 104 inskrywings meer as dié in 2013.

Die byeenkoms laat deelnemers toe om in een van vier afstande - 14km, 45km, 70km, en vir die langer asems, die 100km - deel te neem. Daar is ook ‘n spesiale spanbou kategorie, naamlik die ‘dikwiele’ waar spanlede op tradisionele dikwiel plaasfietse die wedren voltooi.

Die oudste deelneemer aan vanjaar se wedren was Kleintjie Fourie (82) wat ten spyte van die amper onbedraagsame hitte, die 45 kilometer resies in ‘n tyd van 02:00:42 voltooi het. Die jongste

deelnemer was maar 3-jaar oud en het saam met haar ma ‘n fiets gedeel.

Drie mans het die wenstreep gelyktydig oorgesteek in die 100km hoofwedren hierdie jaar.

Mario Ferreira (43), Lourens Beeslaar (31) en Maurice Ferreira (46) het al drie in ‘n tyd van 02:35:32 die afstand voltooi. Kort op hul hakke was Arthur Webber (46), Adrian Steyn (16) en Alexander Strydom (19) wat elk slegs ‘n split sekonde agter die eerste drie klaar gemaak het.

Dorothy Raad (40) was die eerste vrou oor die wenstreep in ‘n tyd van 02:45:24 met Daleen Venter (36) in die tweede plek in ‘n tyd van 03:01:03. Die derde dame oor die lyn was die 52-jarige Magda Woest in ‘n tyd van 03:31:24.

Hannes Grobbelaar (31) het die 70km wedren vir die mans gewen in ‘n tyd van 02:02:45 met Neil Trueman (44) en Gerhard Booysen (43) in tweede en derde plekke onderskeidelik. Roelien Britz (44) was eerste in die dames kategorie in ‘n tyd van 02:02:48 met Anna Elisa Gutierrez (16) in die tweede plek met haar tyd van 02:02:50. Lara Dando (16) was in die derde plek slegs twee sekondes later in ‘n tyd van 02:02:52.

Die organiseerders het reeds begin werk aan hul beplanning vir volgende jaar se byeenkoms en daar word klaar gefluister dat dit nog groter gaan wees.
