Limpopo a CIT hotspot
Transporting large amounts of cash is risky business and security companies suffer for it almost daily in South Africa. Gangs of armed criminals have now started using explosives to gain access to the money inside the cash trucks. These images were taken at the scene of yet another heist outside Polokwane this week.
Tzaneen region has the highest number of cash-in-transit heists in the world. This was confirmed by one of the biggest cash movers in the industry, G4S security. The company operates in 127 countries, of which the highest number of heists occur in South Africa’s Limpopo province – more specifically in the Letaba area. In the last 24 hours alone, three heists were reported, one just outside Polokwane and two in Nelspruit. A video of the Nelspruit incident was shared by motorists who were caught up in the middle of the attack on the N4 from Malalane towards Mbombela. “It is extremely dangerous to film such an event,” explained Faan van Dyk, Manager at G4S Tzaneen. “These gangs are highly trained professionals who operate in a military organized fashion. Should they spot a member of the public filming them during a heist, chances are they will kill you.” Laerskool Duiwelskloof Primary School

and have found alternative means of moving their money around. In the more rural areas such as Limpopo, however, the practice of cash in transit deliveries still prevails. “There really is no other way to move physical cash around. G4S has an air-wing, but it is just not a viable solution to move money around via chopper or small plane. We have a very good working relationship with all the other security companies in this area and we are continuously looking for better, safer and more effective ways of transporting money between clients. Sadly, we are monitored very closely by the criminal element, and every system will inevitably be scrutinized by those who make a living out of these heists.” Members of the public should avoid these scenes if they encounter them along their travels and are requested to contact either the nearest police station or Van Dyk directly on 073-165-9493. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The video showed heavily armed suspects using explosives to open the back of the cash truck. “Explosives, high powered assault rifles and armour piercing rounds are all used by these gangs to incapacitate the cash cars and force the crew to surrender their cargo. They are usually groups of up to 20 men and they work in conjunction with “Stopper teams” who regulate and control traffic.” In an incident in Ofcolaco four weeks ago, a G4S crew member was seriously wounded when the suspects opened fire on the armoured truck he was travelling in, with armour piercing rounds. He is still recovering in hospital. Around the same time a cash heist was foiled in Georges Valley when the guards returned fire on their assailants and wounded one of the suspects. The gang fled without their loot. Moving cash is risky business. The bigger metropolitan areas have started moving away from transporting cash
