Tebogo Sekgobela was crowned as the winner in not only her category (13 – 15 years) but also the new Far North Bulletin Cover Girl 2017. Tebogo and 16 other hopefuls entered for the online competition fuelled by Limpopo Beauty and Modelling Academy from Polokwane. Former Miss Limpopo winner and Bosbokkie reality star, Katryn Barwise, offered the girls a crash course in photographic modelling before the start of the two-week long competition. Tebogo tallied a total of 904 votes in comparison to some of the models who mustered only 50. “With this competition I wanted to highlight the importance of not only being a pretty face, but to learn to market yourself as a brand,” explained Barwise. “The girls all did exceptionally well and I am so proud of them.”

Homeward bound. Because of the community opening their hearts and wallets to the plight of the Letaba SPCA, beautiful animals such as Bella can finally find a loving home. She will be leaving her kennel to join her new family next month. Photo: Joe Dreyer
The Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) has refused to engage the media on the fate of the Letaba SPCA. In response to an official enquiry on how the municipality would plan to become more involved in the funding of the organization, the GTM said the SPCA should speak to them directly. “We invite the SPCA to engage us further in this matter, we will not engage on this matter with the media until we have sat and discussed with SPCA,” said spokesperson, Neville Ndlala. Spokesperson for the GLM in Modjadjiskloof, Lovers Maenetje, said that she has forwarded Bulletin’s enquiry to the office of the Municipal Manager. Whether any response will come from that office, we are not certain of due to the track record of non-commitment, disinterest and unaccountability. The Letaba SPCA is staring the possible closure of their operations in the Tzaneen and Modjadjiskloof area in the face. This is largely due to the lack of funding and support mostly from the two municipalities in the area. Last week we reported on the urgency of the matter and the absolute need for both the GTM and GLM to come on board. The GTM currently funds the SPCA with an amount of R8 500 monthly which is admirable, yet hardly covers the R6 000 municipal electricity bill which follows in the mail. The GLM from Modjadjiskloof on the other hand have never signed an agreement with the organ-
ization and offer no contribution to their plight whatsoever. This despite numerous attempts by the chief inspector, Ellie Potgieter, to establish working relations with them. In light of this, members of the community have taken to Facebook and started a campaign to raise funds for the non-profit. One post on the social media group ‘Tzaneen/ Duiwelskloof Snuffelgids’ set in motion a series of heart-warming events which led to various local business people pledging monthly donations to assist the organization. One man offered to swap his collection of 17 Checkers ‘minis’ for a bag of dogfood. His call was answered by local grocer, Lino de Carvalho, who offered him two bags of 45kg dogfood for the collection. Another prominent business owner, Hennie Smit of Midas Tzaneen, has pledged a monthly donation of R4 000 and issued a challenge to businesses to join the fight and keep the SPCA alive. “I am willing to sign a monthly debit order to help out these caring people,” he said. “Come on business people, one small donation is not enough, we need
to help keep these doors open every month!” The movement has spread as far as Polokwane with a production plant in that city, Bremmer Mills, pledging a delivery of two 45 kilogram pockets of dogfood on Monday morning. Far North Bulletin has made the decision to support this initiative through a weekly graph indicating the amount of funds raised each month in relation to the SPCA Budget requirements. Businesses and individuals who make significant donations to the cause, will be made mention of below it. Anyone interested and able to assist (whether you wish to remain anonymous or not) can make a donation into the account mentioned on page 17. “We are so very thankful for every person and business in the Letaba district who have, out of their own free will, started this heart-warming initiative,” said Tracy Leppan, of the Letaba SPCA. “We can never thank you all enough!” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Georges Valley was number four
When news of a cash-in-transit heist spread like wildfire over social media on Monday morning, the community’s reaction was not at all expected. Instead of an outcry, they seemed numbed by the news. And who would blame them – it was the fourth one this month. The only difference between Monday’s attack and the three preceding it, was that this time the robbers supposedly left empty-handed. It was at around 06:00 on Monday morning that an SBV cash truck was travelling from Tzaneen to Haenertsburg along the R528 through Georges Valley, carrying an unknown amount of money. Four guards were charged with protecting the cargo. Mere meters from the junction at Haenertsburg, three vehicles approached the truck and tried to force it off the road. Two Mercedes sedans – one black and one white – accosted the SBV armored vehicle while a
Quantum minibus followed shortly behind. According to reports a gang of heavily armed men then opened fire on the truck, bursting its tyres and causing it to pull to the side of the road. The men continued firing at the vehicle destroying the driver’s side bulletproof window. The four guards retaliated and the robbers allegedly fled. It appeared as though one or two of the robbers were shot and wounded in the incident because of the blood that coloured the tarmac and witness reports. The gang took their injured with them and fled without their intended loot. Provincial and local police have been on the lookout for any persons who may have reported to medical facilities for gunshot wounds and have launched a manhunt for
the gang. At the time of going to print, however, no arrests were made. There are some marked similarities in these attacks that beg a few questions. There are hardly ever any arrests made and the gangs usually flee with large amounts of money. The attacks are very well orchestrated and executed with military precision involving (most recently) explosives and an arsenal of high caliber assault rifles. The gang often uses hi-jacked luxury sedans such as Mercedes or BMW’s and the attacks are over in a matter of minutes. The question on the lips of the public is why, if these attacks are so similar and so frequent, has no other solution for the safe
transport of money been devised? Furthermore, why do these money trucks not travel with police escourts, and how is it possible that the criminals know exactly when and where to strike in order to evade police capture? Possibly the most pertinent question would be how does a person purchase military grade explosives, ammunition and rifles without sounding some alarm somewhere? If the developed countries can force sexual offenders to register on a public roll, then surely we can adapt the same formula to force known criminals out of our communities. Surely no vendor should be allowed to sell a weapon over a certain caliber to any civilian without asking a few questions. The public not only deserve answers, but demand it. So too, do the families of the security gards who place their lives in danger for the protection of others’ assets, daily. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Off the Beaded track with Willard
The man with the magic hands, Willard Charumba (right) busy weaving a Buffalo head. His brother, Derick, at their spot outside Sugarhill OK Minimarket. Photo: Joe Dreyer
“I used to struggle to make a lion, but now I’m perfect,” said Willard Charumba, the Malawian with a knack for sculpting animals from beads and wire. He made headlines this week over social media when members of the Tzaneen community highlighted his handiwork in a Facebook post urging others to support him and his craft. We spent a few minutes with Willard on his pavement-workshop outside the Sugarhill OK Minimarket
in Adshade Street on Monday morning. Willard is the eldest of seven children. He was born and raised in Malawi to an impoverished family in a small village. It was here that he learnt the art of beading and spent many hours creating his little sculptures of birds, lizards and mammals alongside his four brothers and two sisters. “It started as a hobby really,” he explained. “Our first real customers were taxi drivers who bought our sculptures to adorn their dashboards. Later when more
NURSERY@NYALANI
and more people started buying our creations, it became our only means of income.” His wife, Grace, lives in Nelspruit with their four children of whom the eldest (twin boys named Malcolm and McMillan) celebrated their 21st birthday on the 23rd of June. Willard travels home every fortnight to spend time with his family. The couple has two daughters too, Megan (13) and their late-comer, Marvelous who is now only 18 months old. Grace is a stay-at-home mom, but according to Willard also a skilled artist who helps him with big orders for sculptures.

“I have some customers from guesthouses who commission special orders and then I need her help to have it done on time.” According to him, the most laborious project he ever completed was for a lodge in Piet Retief. “I had to make a life-size elephant, zebra and buffalo for them. The animals each stood over 1.8 metres tall and it took me roughly a month on each animal to complete the order.” The most difficult creation he ever made was a life-sized lion which he says he can now sculpt in his sleep. “Yoh, that one was tough, but now, ah it can’t be a problem.” With the majority of his creations being birds and lizards, Willard earns his income from his street sales mainly. The birds are very popular in Tzaneen and even as we spoke, customers stopped to place special orders for their gardens and entry ways. “There is nothing that I cannot make,” he said proudly, “even now, I have an order for Ben Vorster high school for tiny buffalo heads which they want to hand out.” One challenge lies before him this week as the owner of Sugarhill and Sugarloaf, wellknown grocer, Lino de Carvalho, has commissioned a VW Beetle and a combi to add to his collection of scale-modelled VW’s. “I am going to make him those beetles and I just know that he will love them because they will look like the real thing,” he said with a chuckle. “It will take me roughly a week and the cars will be ready.” Bulletin will revisit Willard next week to check up on the progress. In the meantime, if you have not yet done so, be sure to stop and say hi to Willard when next you make your trip to Sugarhill. If you are affiliated to a guest lodge, hotel or curio shop, get your next consignment from Willard and add some African extravagance to your repertoire. “I want to say thanks to the people of Tzaneen for keeping me alive with their support. They are always so friendly to me and I feel honoured to know that my art is adorning their homes.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Greetings in the name of Christ. Lord, speak to us through the words of the scripture, that we may hear in the silence the life-giving word You would speak to us. Amen. Healing. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest” Matt 11:28 Jesus uttered these words to give us comfort and strength, knowing how we as humans are concerned about little things. Often our bodies do not comply with what we want and we break down in some way or the other. We become ill, it might just be something minor or it could be something much bigger and more debilitating. So how do we deal with this? If it is something minor, say a headache, we can take a tablet for relief, if it something major we consult a doctor who is trained to investigate the cause and prescribe treatment. So we are healed physically. Some people believe in herbal remedies and thus they consult herbalist, this works as well. Many illnesses however, are of a physiological nature, our brain is a work of wonder and often we get messages from it which we misinterpret for example, if we go into an environment which is known to be a disease riddled, we will definitely catch the disease. If we know about the area we can beforehand take preventative measures. If we should catch the disease, we can go to a specialist and be healed. God gave us the power of healing, not all of us have it and often we can get it for a limited time or for a specific purpose. Healing sessions are held by various people, yet I am sceptical about some of them, I have been to a few and have yet to see actual healing taking place. Then again I have been or perhaps am a little biased. It also concerns me that I never hear of these preachers going to hospitals to cure those who are ill there. Rather the people must come to them to be healed. Jesus was known for His healing and many travelled far and wide to ask Him for healing. He had the power to heal. We all need to be healed spiritually before we can receive full physical healing as it goes hand in hand, if the spirit is healed so will the body be. Blessings

Bulletin wins Community Newspaper of the Year
Isabel Venter and Andries van Zyl of the Zoutpansberger in Louis Trichardt, Joe Dreyer of Far North Bulletin and Wickus Lee of the Limpopo Mirror on the eve of the FCJ Awards in Centurion.
The prestigious, Forum for Community Journalism Excellence, awards was hosted at Leriba Hotel and Lodge in Centurion this past weekend. Limpopo’s independent press cleaned house, walking away with an impressive number of accolades. A hundred invited guests and finalists from 500 publications around the country were in attendance on Friday evening. “The importance of good community journalists were once again highlighted by the high standards of work submitted this year. It is a comforting thought knowing that there still exist watchdogs looking out for communities in the various municipalities around the country.” Tzaneen’s only independent community newspaper, the Far North Bulletin, was awarded the esteemed title of Community Newspaper of the Year in the Grassroots/
Community newspaper category and also clinched first place in the category for Front Pages of the Year. At the awards the judging panel commended Bulletin for their use of bold headlines and striking images on their front pages. “The paper has a good mix between hard-hitting investigative reports, community news, human interest pieces and schools news which caters to a broad spectrum within the community,” they remarked. Bulletin’s sister publications, Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror, based in Louis Trichardt, scooped top honours in the category for Independent Commercial Newspapers taking first and second place respectively. These twin publications also raked in the honours for the front pages in their category. In the individual sub-categories for writing and photography, Joe Dreyer was awarded
SA‘s Independent COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER
first place in the Best General Photography category. “Joe’s entry met the necessary criteria to earn him the top accolade in this category. With the focus here on capturing images that focus on subjects like people, animal and humour. His entry of people having fun at a funfair was a visually impactful image which was well composed. He also got the lighting on point, which, with shooting into the sky, is not as easy as it looks,” the judge’s citation read. He was also awarded a fourth place overall in the Photographer of the Year category. In the writing categories, Dreyer walked away with a joint-second place award in the Investigative Reporting category for his work on the sinkhole in Georges Valley which contributed to the reparations on the R528 road. He shared the position with John Harvey of the Southern Suburbs Tattler from
Gauteng. The event was a grand affair this year through the assistance of the two big media houses, Caxton and Media 24, who have vowed to grow community press through their support of the FCJ Excellence initiative. A special mention was made of the journalists and editors who sadly passed away during the last year. This included a special word in honour of the late Francois Aucamp, former editor of Laeveld Bulletin and industry stalwart. “We at Far North Bulletin thank you, our readers and advertisers who made these awards possible through your continued support and loyalty to our publication. It is through your input and support that we have, and continue to, grow and are able to remain relevant in our quest to keep you, our community, informed.”

The world’s first skyjacker Mirages, flying in perfect formation, flew from the air force base over the Haenertsburg cemetery to give a final farewell to Ted Strever the world’s first skyjacker. Ted had died on 18th February 1997. It was the spring of 1942. Lieutenant-Colonel Ted Strever was a South African Air Force pilot who was seconded to the Royal Air Force. The RAF was co-opted to fly en route from the British-occupied island of Malta in the Mediterranean to a posting in the Far East. As the Malta posting was never official, the RAF later wouldn’t award Ted the Maltese George Cross even though the Maltese government had awarded it to him. On 28th July, Ted, with a crew of three, took off in his Bristol Beaufort bomber to intercept an Italian supply ship. Just after midday they located the target and Ted scored a direct hit.
His aircraft, however, was hit by enemy gunfire. They managed a crash landing on the sea and scrambled into their inflatable dinghy. They were picked up by an Italian seaplane, a Cant, and made prisoners of war on an Italian air force base on the Greek island of Corfu, just south of the Port of Kerkira. They were to be taken to the huge Italian naval base in Taranto for a life behind barbed wire. The four prisoners decided to overpower the five Italians midair and take control of the plane. The world’s first skyjack swung into action on that spring morning 750 meters above the Ionian Sea. They overpowered the radio operator to prevent him from making contact with base. They surprised the guard and relieved him of his weapon. For a short while the table was almost turned when the Italian co-pilot pulled a pistol on them. How-
ever, in the confusion, one Italian knocked the weapon out of the other Italian’s hand. The Italians were tied up, Ted took over the controls and the engineer was told, at gunpoint, to switch to the reserve fuel tanks. There was not enough fuel to reach Africa but they might make it to their base on Malta. There were no maps aboard and, as they also didn’t know how to work the Italian radio, they had to follow the southern European coastline with the danger of running
into German or Italian planes. They turned south and as Malta loomed ahead so did the Spitfires. Ted hurled the first pilot back into his seat and ordered him in hurried sign language to throttle back and land in the sea. As he eased the engines, rapidly slowing the seaplane, the first fusillade of fire from the Spitfires ripped through the Italian aircraft. The Cant shuddered. It had run out of petrol some five kilometers off Malta. One of the men whipped off his shirt and then his white vest and waved it out the window making it clear that they were “surrendering” to their own side. Ted received a DFC. There is an odd twist to this tale. Clifford Thompson from Haenertsburg had also trained as a pilot in the Royal Air Force and was also in World War 2. Clifford, his navigator and two gunners had been shot down over the Mediterranean on 29th July 1942. Their emergency dinghy kept them afloat. When the Italians went looking for the Cant, that Ted and his men had skyjacked, they found Clifford and his men floating in the sea. The Italians captured them and they became prisoners of war. Clifford managed to escape after his third attempt. Clifford and Ted met each other for the first time after the war and were amazed that they both lived in the same area. If it hadn’t been for Ted, the Italians wouldn’t have gone looking for the Cant and wouldn’t have found Clifford and his men bobbing aimlessly on the wide ocean. The two men went to the local pub every year on 29th July to celebrate their auspicious date.

Mercedes or Ferrari? Tzaneen’s Formula One fan base is a fierce one with a strong division between the Merc and Ferrari crusaders apparent on every other Sunday. In one neighbourhood in town, the competition is especially rowdy with neighbours Ion van der Westhuizen and Andre van der Walt both exceptionally passionate about the sport. “Lewis Hamilton is gonna take it this year, without a doubt,” said Van der Westhuizen. “He has had a very good year so far with a few records under his belt and despite last weekend’s let down, he is in a good position on the grid.” The main reason for Van der Westhuizen’s prediction however, is fairly simple. “He drives a Mercedes.” On the opposite side of the fence, Van der Walt, is a die-hard Ferrari fan. Although we could not reach him before our deadline, we understand that he feels as passionately about his team’s chances to take the win as his close friend and neighbour. The weekend of the 9th of July will see the drivers take to the tarmac at the Austrian Grand Prix.
Who are the drivers to look out for and what do the experts say? “The Austrian Grand Prix, held at the Red Bull Ring Pull is won by Max Verstappen, much to the delight of team owner, track owner and race sponsor Dietrich Mateschitz, who reportedly spent a sum the equivalent of the national income of Ghana for this precise moment,” predicts Drive Tribe’s Jeremy Maggs. “At Silverstone a week later, there is drama, as some over-exhuberant post-victory crowd surfing by Lewis Hamilton sees him carried out of the front gate and dumped on the Towcester by-pass.” When looking at the current driver standings according to their points thus far, Austria, and indeed the season, could go either way. The German Sebastian Vettel currently leads the log standings with 153 points while Lewis Hamilton occupies a second spot with 139 points. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Mabatho wins a car
It is estimated that more than half of South Africa’s work force rely on public transport to commute to and from the workplace. Owning a vehicle is not only expensive (maintenance plans and repayments) but is also regarded as somewhat of a luxury to many. One 27-year old Tzaneen shopper will no longer be a part of the statistic. Thanks to Tzaneen SuperSPAR and the SPAR-wina-car competition, Mabatho Matilda Mmola will now enjoy all the perks of being mobile. The elated young local was overcome with emotion when store owner, Allen Brett and shop manager, Solly Masetla handed her the keys to a brand new Hyundai i10 on Wednesday afternoon. “I was so surprised when I received a call from someone saying that they are from Spar and that I have won my very own car! I thought I was dreaming,” she said excitedly. “Everyone has to come and shop at Tzaneen SuperSPAR, I do all my shopping here and now it has paid off!” Mmola’s sister accompanied her at the handover and had to take the driver’s seat as she was the only one with a driver’s license. The competition required that shoppers swipe their SPAR Rewards cards with every purchase to be entered into the draw for one of only 50 cars across the country. “Not only for the big competitions such as the annual Win-a-Car, but shoppers who build up points on their rewards cards are regularly rewarded with discounts and vouchers and other incentive bonuses from their favourite SPAR store,” explained Solly. “And these cards are valid at any SPAR outlet in the country.” This week was the second time a car had been given away at Tzaneen SuperSPAR. The winner of the previous vehicle a few years ago, was not from Tzaneen and had to travel up from Gauteng to collect his vehicle. “We wish Mabatho only the best of luck and happiness with her new vehicle,” said store owner, Allen Brett. “Thank you for shopping with SPAR, Mabatho, we cannot wait to help you load your monthly groceries into the back of your brand spanking new ride!”

CAREFUL. IT BITES.
THE NEW AMAROK COMFORTLINE. While the latest Amarok is certain to turn heads with its great looks, it’s what you don’t see that’s even more impressive. You don’t see the 4MOTION® all-wheel drive, the phenomenal hill descent control or the unique off-road ABS, ASR and ESP that ensure a steady ride across even the harshest terrain. It’s the under-the-skin, 100% German engineering that gives it that bite. The new Amarok. Not just tough, smart.

Jackson and the five
Locals benefit Front: Ashley Hunt, Lin-Mari Theron and Canell Jackson. Back: Sean Hunt and Dawie Theron.
Five Merensky archers travelled to Pretoria to compete in the Ekurhuleni Provincial Field Championships. This competition took place over two days at Archers Edge. In total, 96 Archers endured seven hours per day in the field. Sean Hunt and Lin-Mari Theron won gold medals, while Dawie Theron and Canell Jackson received silver and Ashley Hunt bronze. Two national qualifiers were obtained by Theron and Jackson, while Hunt qualified provincial. After this event, Jackson boasts with provincial colours for the 2017 – 2018 season.

Becoming a professional rugby player requires extreme discipline. It’s about time and energy dedicated to perfecting skills – but without the right guidance, many players don’t know where to start. That’s why Nashua is driving the Rugby Skills Project: a programme dedicated to rapidly improving young rugby players’ passing and catching skills under the watchful eye of experts. The Nashua Rugby Skills Project aims to improve ball skills at schools across South Africa by 20%. The challenge began at the end of 2015 and has already benefitted 400 children so far through its skills improvement coaching clinics. The initiative was conceptualised by The Great Sporting Goods Company, who runs The ShadowBall Academy, a rugby skills academy focused on ball
skills (passing and catching). The academy uses a uniquely designed, flat-sided ball, the ShadowBall, which allows players to practise passing and catching on their own, without a field or team, to increase the frequency of practice. The ShadowBall, designed by Gary Crookes, can be thrown against a wall and caught by the player to improve accuracy. It gives rugby players the chance to practise passing and catching on their own, in the same way golfers do on the driving range. The Rugby Skills Project is just one display of the various ways Nashua supports local sport – from school to provincial level. The initiative marks a new era in Nashua’s mission to nurture the next generation of rugby stars – giving them the resources and leadership they need to reach their full potential.

It’s a Plasie-Vossie finale The seemingly unstoppable u/15 Merensky rugby team has done it again. This past weekend they travelled to the icy cold Thabazimbi to face Ellisras in semi-finals of the Limpopo championships on the grounds of Frikkie Meyer High School. The road to the semi’s was a long and tough one for this young team who shocked local fans a month before, when they beat their neighbours, Ben Vorster in a league match on their home turf. The odds were definitely against the Plasies, seeing that Ellisras were on the winning streak for the past two years. At half-time, the score board reflected a 7-0 lead for Ellisras. After an inspiring team talk by the two coaches, Messrs Thomas Joubert and JeCe Swart, the Merensky boys ignited and once again answered the call. In the second half, Neil Delport scored a try, while Danie Potgieter added two tries. Andru Miller converted one goal, to bring the score to 17-10 at the final whistle. This promising team from Plasieland will play against Ben Vorster in the Limpopo finals, scheduled for Saturday, 29 July, at HTS Tom Naudé in Polokwane. For both teams it will be a tour de force as the Mighty Red Machine will be looking to settle the score after their previous 10-20 loss.
Duathletes off to Nationals
Five for Limpopo hockey
Two athletes from Merensky High School, Janco Coetzee and Amelia Middleton, were recently chosen as team members of the Tshwane Triathlon Association (TTA), formerly known as the Northern Gauteng Triathlon Team. On 2 July, they will compete in the SA Duathlon, held at Midmar Dam in KwaZulu Natal. Janco will take part in the Super Sprint (2.5km run, 10km cycling and again a 1.25km run). Amelia will endeavour a 5km run, 20km cycling, ending with another 2.5km run. Although it is expected that freezing conditions will prevail, these two Plasies are sure to bring the heat.
Five girls hockey stars from Merensky High School excelled at the winter games trials recently held in Polokwane. Luné Fritz, Nikita Pohl, Dezi Dreyer, Palesa Shiluvane and Victory Mathebula were chosen as part of the team to represent Limpopo at the winter games in Durban from 9-15 July. This event is sponsored by the Department of Education.
Iron in a velvet glove
Ms Anri Burger, a Mathematics and Life Sciences teacher at Merensky High School proved that she is a force to be reckoned with, when she completed the Ironman 70.3 in Durban over the weekend of 17 June. Former-Plasie, Elisma Minnaar (class of 2010) also completed this challenge.
This unforgettable race in the heart of the city began with a 1.9km swim in the Bay of Plenty, followed by a fast, undulating 90km bike course that looped around the Blue Lagoon and headed along the M4 highway. The flat, twoloop 21.1km run along the promenade surely provided some spectacular views.
A jubilant Burger completed this gruelling challenge in 6 hours and 34 minutes (stage 1 – 34 minutes, stage 2 – 184 minutes and stage 3 – 161 minutes). Minnaar managed to complete the challenge in an astonishing 5 hours 56 minutes (stage 1 – 36 minutes, stage 2 – 181 minutes, stage 3 – 124 minutes).

Limpopo kampioene
