Legally unemployed Stanford Garikai (54) has been selling his brooms, mops and dusters to Tzaneen locals for almost four years. He lives in an RDP house in the Mhokoloto area just outside Lenyenye with his wife and six children between the ages of 6 and 26-years old. Stan is the only bread-winner and after repeatedly being turned away by potential employers, keeps his family alive through the manufacturing and selling of his wares. Stan’s story is not unlike that of many South Africans who struggle for survival dailly amid the rising unemployment rate and the collapsing economy. But Stan has found a way without breaking the law, or stepping on GTM toes.

Some 250 members of the SAPS, CPF, GTM, traffic officers, the NPA and all Limpopo departments of state attended the day long colloquium. Major General Maggie Mathebula from Tzaneen SAPS said that children need guidelines to prevent bullying and that policing can’t simply be left to the police. This sentiment was reiterated by most of the subsequent speakers. The business community, although invited, did not attend the colloquium.

Mathebula said villagers used to inform the induna when they had visitors. Today indunas aren’t informed and they even allow strangers to build houses and some of them are illegal.

There’s housebreaking nightly often accompanied by violence.

These criminals terrorise villagers and move from village to village. In one case a grandmother covered up for her criminal grandson. The police then found stolen credit cards and a stolen SASSA card under the mattress in the house. She insisted that people report anyone seen with a firearm to the police so that the police can check if it’s licensed.

Turning to the issue of rape she said that gang rapes often happen after young girls have been to church. She also advised girls not to go to bars if they don’t have money to pay for themselves. Expecting a man to buy a girl alcohol is asking for trouble.

At this point Mathebula turns sideways, sticks out her posterior, cries ‘bam bam’, switches into Sepedi and the delegates burst into inappropriate laughter.

Domestic violence is a major problem and Mathebula asked men to stop abusing their women and women to stop shouting at their husbands. This serious matter was followed by much giggling from the delegates.

Mr R Stander, Chief Director Department of Safety Security and Liaison reiterated that community members must get involved in fighting crime. The Limpopo Development Plan (LDP) must strengthen the criminal justice system.

The Limpopo province has always been 90% rural but things have changed over the years with electricity now available. The rural areas have also been infiltrated with hard core drugs and rural safety is at stake. There are now drugs at schools and morals have gone downhill in terms of the social fabric. The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) postulates that the high level of unemployment influences violent protests. The overwhelming majority of violence is committed by young, unemployed black men. Prolonged frustration will lead to violence. Violent protestors view the SA justice system as too lax in dealing with issues of violent protest.

The mayor of Tzaneen, Mr Maripe Mangena, said that this colloquium would break the silence on crime. He said, “Tourists and other visitors are listening to the media as far as crime reports of this area are concerned. The GTM resolves to change this perception.”

“Our farmers, vital in the production of fruit in Limpopo, are attacked by people I can only call animals”. The mayor also voiced his concern about drugs being brought into all areas. In conclusion he said, “There are 100 hard core criminals amongst a population of 400,000. This colloquium has to bring about change so that criminals stop.”

GTM: cameras are legal Only seven days remain for the R71 hawkers to remove themselves from the side of the national road that heads from Tzaneen towards George’s Valley. Bulletin reported last week that the hawkers were issued with notices from South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) to vacate the area within two weeks.

In answer to an enquiry from Bulletin, SANRAL said that they are currently in talks with the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) to find a solution forward. “SANRAL will endeavour to consult with the affected Municipalities and traders within the affected areas. These consultations will aid in reaching an agreement and solution as a way forward where traders and road users are not endangered in any way.”

According to them, no person is allowed to trade along a national road without express written consent from SANRAL. If they are found to be trading otherwise, the said person will be guilty of an offence punishable with three months’ imprisonment or a fine.

In Chapter 15 of SANRAL’s Statutory Control Guideline Manual published in March 2009, section 15.4 states that SANRAL must seek assistance from municipalities, provincial traffic authorities and SAPS to prevent illegal trading within national roads restriction areas. The fact that the GTM has allegedly been supplying hawkers with illegal permits and granted them permission to trade along the R71, renders this guideline moot. It also stands in the way of the efforts by provincial law enforcement to ensure the safety of road users on national roads.

The GTM has admitted that the R71 is not of their concern as they have no jurisdiction over it. But, in contrast, they have erected traffic cameras along sections of this road in order to fine speeding motorists, and allegedly issued these hawkers with permits to allow for trade there. If the municipality has no jurisdiction or

control over the R71 then surely they have no authority to allow trade there.

We spoke to Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM. We asked him why the unmanned traffic cameras, which the municipality erected along the R71, are still in use considering that it has now been deemed illegal. We also wanted to know what would happen with the money that motorists have already paid in fines from these cameras and whether they would be removed. His response seemed contradictory to information received from the provincial traffic chief and SANRAL. “We have been approved by the Magistrate to have speed cameras on the R36 and R71,” Ndlala said. “So our operations are above board. It is permissible by law and any ticket issued by us on those roads is valid and should be paid.”

Ndlala also denied having approved any hawking permits for the traders along the R71.

Does this mean the GTM knew about the illegal traders but chose not to step in and remove them? Why is the municipality now suddenly jumping on the matter when the problem has been ongoing for years?

“With regard to addressing the hawkers challenges our law enforcement has a planned programme to be implemented from the 14th of June 2017. Next week they will be conducting road blocks. The programme will include the removal of illegal hawkers and confiscation of illegal goods,” Ndlala said.

It is strange that the GTM has changed its stance on the matter over the course of only a week. A month ago when we asked about clearing up the illegal traders, Ndlala pertinently stated that the GTM cannot interfere on the R71 and that it was SANRAL’s problem.

Wolkberg blaze – no clear answers FOLLOW UP

The cause of the fire that destroyed a total of 13 offices in the Wolkberg centre in downtown Tzaneen last week, is still being investigated. According to Farouk Gani, a member on the board of directors for the consortium who owns the building, the cost of the damages has not yet been established.

Gani told Bulletin that an assessor had visited the site and found that there seemed to have been no foul play involved. “The assessor said that they could find no accelerant and therefore it does not seem likely that the fire was started by someone intentionally.”

The findings seem strange as on the morning of the fire on Thursday, last week, it appeared as though it was started by someone at the back of the building. The blaze soon spread through the building and destroyed accounting offices, cash loans operations, a hair salon, the offices of a lawyer and a number of other businesses on the first floor.

The roof of the building was completely gutted, but Gani reckons that the structural integrity of the building remained intact.

Hannah moved to rehab

The Maritz family from Phalaborwa are celebrating this week. Their daughter, Hannah (8), was moved to the Clinix Rehabilitation hospital in Eloff Street, Johannesburg, yesterday and has taken some major steps towards recovery.

Little Hannah spent the past few weeks in an induced coma in the ICU at Sunshine private hospital in Benoni. This followed a horrific motorcar crash in Polokwane on the 6th of May which resulted in Hannah, her two brothers Matthew (14) and Jaden (12) and her parents, Coenie and Daphne Maritz,

rushed to hospital for emergency medical attention.

The family did not have medical aid and therefore relied heavily on the financial support of the community, their church group – Oneway Ministries - and aid from the Road Accident Fund.

Since the day of the accident, Matthew, Jaden, Coenie and Daphne have all been discharged from hospital. The boys have completely healed and are spending time with their parents by Hannah’s side. The family post daily Facebook Live updates on Han-

nah’s recovery process.

On Monday morning, Hannah removed the feeding tube from her throat by herself.

The nursing staff decided to try and feed her which was successful and caused the rehab doctor to sign off and have her moved to Clinix. Yesterday, Hannah took a few assisted steps to and from her bed. Although she was exhausted by the exercise, it was a very encouraging development and meant that she was slowly regaining her strength.

“We thank everyone for their daily words of encouragement and prayers. The positive

When the building will be restored was not clear, nor was any mention made of what is to happen to the lessees who lost their businesses in the incident. Will this be the next burnt out structure in the Tzaneen CBD to be left in disrepair? Already the CBD is scarred by the remnants of fire damaged structures never to be repaired, now occupied by street sleepers, prostitutes and drug dealers.

“These things happen unfortunately and there really is nothing one can do to prepare for something like this disaster,” Gani added. “Fortunately, the insurance company is there.”

The SAPS forensics team have not yet concluded their findings, and are busy with investigations into the fire and what may have caused it. When those findings are made available, we will publish a follow up.

Chemo and radiation now available Tzaneen’s ever-expanding medical fraternity received another addition this week with the announcement of an Oncologist now operating in town. Dr Zirk Jansen is based in Polokwane but will be available for consultations and treatments in Tzaneen, every Friday.

The good news is that chemo- and radiation therapy will now be available without the lengthy trip to Pretoria as Dr Jansen can be visited at Dr Gert van der Merwe’s consultation rooms at the Ivory Tusk medical complex.

Specifically, Dr Jansen is a specialist clinical radiation oncologist. This means that he is trained in chemotherapy as well as radiation therapy and can offer both treatments in Tzaneen. “The mistake many people often make is, believing that one needs to drive to the city or even cross the globe elsewhere for specialist cancer treatments,” he said. “Cancer treatments and cancer education is the same all across the world and an oncologist receives the very same training as a South African doctor.

The sickness stays the same and the human body stays the same, therefore the therapy stays the same.”

It is all about convenience and proper care

for the cancer patients who desperately need therapy. Dr Jansen made the decision to start practicing here, when he realized a number of his patients he treats in Polokwane, travel there from Tzaneen.

“In a nutshell, chemotherapy is basically cancer medicine. As there are different types of medication for different types of heart conditions, there are different types of cancer medications for the various types of cancers. Chemotherapy targets the DNA of the cancer cells and destroys the cancer from within. There is a myth that chemo harms the body and actually makes the patient more sick. That is not true.

The human DNA strand differs from that of the cancer cell and chemo targets specifically that type of DNA. There are some side-effects as a result of the therapy, but they are only temporary, such as hair-loss.”

Eendrag maak mag Asparukh was ‘n vreeslose en onverskrokke leier wat in die sewende eeu na Christus geleef het. Hy was die leier van ‘n stam met die naam van Bulgar, wat uiteindelik gelei het tot die stigting van ‘n land wat ons vandag as Bulgarye ken.

Die volgende legende word oor hom vertel... sy vyf seuns het rondom sy sterfbed gestaan en na sy afsterwe, wou hulle vertrek, om elkeen sy eie koninkryk te begin.

“Ek weet nie wie my as leier moet opvolg nie?”, het Asparukh gesê. “Daarom het ek besluit om te kyk wie van julle die sterkste is.” Hy het ‘n bondel stokke aan sy oudste seun gegee en hom versoek om dit middeldeur te breek. Hy kon dit egter nie regkry nie en na hom ook nie een van die ander vier broers nie. Hierna het die ou leier weer die bondel stokke geneem, dit van mekaar losgemaak en daarna die stokkies een vir een middeldeur gebreek.

Toe het hy gesê: “Onthou altyd, my seuns... saam kan niemand julle breek nie, maar as julle verdeeld is, is dit almal se einde.”

Alhoewel dit ‘n legende is, bly die boodskap altyd dieselfde vir alle mense van alle tye en op alle plekke: Eendrag maak mag. Eensgesindheid is deurslaggewend vir die toekoms van elke volk, maatskappy, skool of kerk. Waar ‘n organisasie verdeeld is, grawe hy sy eie graf. Paulus skryf hieroor in 1 Korintiërs 1:10: “Ek doen ‘n beroep op julle almal, in die naam van ons Here Jesus Christus, om eensgesind te wees. Daar moet geen verdeeldheid onder julle wees nie. Julle moet een wees in dieselfde gesindheid en met dieselfde oortuiging.” In die jare wat voorlê, gaan Christene in ons land mekaar bitter nodig kry. Ons sal soos nooit tevore moet saamstaan as ons nie gebreek wil word nie. Kom ons los die onderlinge beuselagtighede en mensgemaakte verskille en begin om saam te staan, om hierdie land vir Christus te wen. Prediker 4:12: “Een alleen kan oorweldig word, twee saam kan weerstand bied. ‘n Driedubbele tou breek nie maklik nie.” Saam met God... is ons onbreekbaar!

This twitcher loves his birds

Birds fly into this delicate mist net and get trapped in the pockets. The bird ringer then takes them out carefully.

The all-important identification.

There are only 150 active bird ringers in South Africa and watching Magoebaskloof bird ringer Quentin Hagens (47) it’s no wonder as it is meticulous work that has to be done speedily.

Quentin is passionate about birds and bird ringing. He’s the only qualified bird ringer in the Kloof area with three bird ringers in Polokwane.

This entails keeping notes plus setting up fine nets called mist nets. Quentin puts them up in the shade, preferably with a dark-leafed tree behind, so that the birds don’t see it, fly into the net and get caught. The mist nets have pockets and it’s into these pockets that the birds fall. He never puts the mist net in the same spot as birds get wise to it.

Gingerly Quentin lifts the bird out of the pocket and deposits it in a bag made of very soft material and seams so tight that the bird can’t hook itself.

He knots the top of the bag or else the bird can open the bag and escape. He checks the nets every 15 minutes on a hot day and every half hour on a cool day. He never rings in wet weather as it’s simply too cold for the birds.

Holding the bird in a specific but gentle manner, he identifies the bird before putting on the ring which is either made of aluminium or stainless steel. In

order to put on the ring he measures the thickest part of the leg to see which size ring is correct.

The smallest ring is 1.8mm. Only qualified bird ringers can buy the rings and ringing equipment from the only supplier - Animal Demography Unit (ADU).

Quentin explains that the plumage of young and old birds is different. There are little signs to indicate age. With some birds one can’t tell the sex. Some have different colouring or size to determine sex. Bird ringers weigh the birds. The tail length is measured from below. The length is never measured on top because the preening gland is on top. This gland is sensitive and supplies oil to help preen and protect feathers. Culmen is the beak length and this, amongst other factors, determines the species. Then Quentin measures the head length and all of this is done in three minutes. Speed is of the essence for minimal trauma to the birds. Some species, like bush shrikes, stress more than others. That’s why Quentin rings birds that stress easily first.

Quentin was interested in birds as a young child. His enthusiasm was further fuelled by his uncle Clive Walker who started EWT (Endangered Wildlife Trust). Quentin was born in Johannesburg, grew up

in Windhoek, Namibia and matriculated in Kimberley. He studied nature conservation at Pretoria Technikon with special interest in birds and small mammals. There he became a research technician and that fired his interest in ringing birds. Quentin got involved in bird ringing 17 years ago. His two year training consisted of ringing 500 birds and 50 species. He renews his bird ringing permit annually and each province has another permit as bird ringing is classed as a form of hunting.

He and his wife bought their 21 hectare Magoebaskloof farm five years ago. Alien vegetation and avos grow there. However, going back in history, he found photographs of his farm when it was just forest and grassland.

He intends rehabilitating the farm and this will hopefully bring back the original bird and mammal life.

Marcus Nakene (54), a spokesman for the Buta taxi drivers, says the 500-odd Buta taxi drivers were tired of being labeled ‘mageza’. The word is Sowetan slang for taxi driver. However, Marcus says that the Buta taxi drivers decided this word was derisive as it indicated a lack of professionalism. Some three months ago they decided to get fit, mind their hygiene, dress smartly, listen to customers’ complaints, sort out problems and be serious about the taxi industry. The Buta taxi rank is at Tzaneen Pick & Pay and operates to and from Modjadjiskloof and Kgapane.

Marcus has been in the taxi business for the last decade.

In order to get fit, the Buta taxi drivers formed their own soccer team. They have played against the Johannesburg Taxi Association and won 2-1. They also played the Sekgosese Taxi Association from the Soekmekaar area. They beat the Buta side 2-1, then 3-2 and then Buta beat them 1-0. They also played against Mamitwa Taxi Association.

Mamitwa beat Buta 6-4.

The Buta taxi drivers are appealing to the public for equipment so that they can play good soccer. They need soccer balls, nets and whistles as, at the moment, they are borrowing these items from others. If the public can assist please contact Marcus Nakene at 082 431 4113.

Muslims observe Ramadan

Millions of Muslims around the world are observing Ramadan, a holy month of fasting, reflection, patience, acts of goodwill and religious devotion. We would like to wish our many Muslim readers well over this holy period. This year Ramadan 1438 (2017 in the Gregorian calendar) started on May 27 and will finish on June 24, both Saturdays.

Following this, Muslims will celebrate Eid al-Fitr, referred to as Eid. The Eid celebration, on June 25, marks the end of the Ram-

adan fasting. Ramadan dates change every year as the Islamic calendar is based on the moon’s cycle. The Islamic dates move back by 11 days each year.

During Ramadan, Muslims practice sawm, or fasting, from dawn to dusk but are able to feast in the evening. Dedicated Muslims will refrain from eating or drinking throughout the entire day, with a single puff of a cigarette or sip of water considered enough to invalidate their efforts. Prayer time is increased

and Muslims are encouraged to read more of the Qur’an. Islam’s holiest book. The Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in Ramadan. The night of its revelation – known as Laylatul Qadr, in the last ten days of Ramadan – is one of the holiest and most auspicious nights in the Islamic calendar.

In South Africa, the fast is between 11-12 hours a day. Muslims wake up shortly before Fajr (the pre-dawn prayer) to eat something before undertaking their fast.

There are a few groups that don’t have to follow the strict fasting during the month.

These include children, the sick, the elderly and women who are either pregnant or have their period. There are other special circumstances where Muslims are let off, such as athletes competing in a tournament or during times of travel. A recent population census revealed that there are about a million Muslims in South Africa of whom the majority will be celebrating Ramadan.

Hat Day was celebrated at The King’s Court in Modjadjiskloof with much glee and creativity. Some 30 little children took part in the drive to raise money for the SAVF. Slender class teacher Shanna Wilson, dressed in a black and white panda bear onesie making her look twice her size, kept the children under control as they were just so happy and excited. One winner was chosen out of the girls and one out of the boys.

Winner in the girls’ section was Farhanah Booysise in Grade 3A and the winner in the boys’ section was Mukona Mulobedzi in Grade 4T.

Tzaneen is reg vir die Comrades

Sestien van Tzaneen se langste asems gaan hierdie jaar die Comrades onder in Natal aanpak.

Vyftien van hierdie atlete is verbonde aan die Tzaneen Maraton Klub en een padwedloper van Le Club, Greta Bekker, sluit by die groepie aan vir die geleentheid.

Meeste van die groep se atlete het al voorheen aan die wedloop deelgeneem, maar daar is vanjaar drie Lawrence Mahlatsi, Louise van den Dool, Daniel Mabulana, Liana van Niekerk, Cor van Heyningen, Erika MacConnel, Benjamin Malatji, nuwelinge in die span wat vir die eerste keer die Paul Zaayman, Matome Rakhwale, Jan de Kock.

Die wenners van hierdie kompetisie was Carl Benedetti (Senior Mans), Grieta de Lange (Senior Dames), Dean Durrheim (Junior Seuns) en Michelle Durrheim (Junior Dogters). Letsitele Varswater Hengelklub wil graag vir Vissagie saagmeule bedank vir die geleentheid om op hulle gronde te kon hengel. Corbett stel haar punt Plasieland se Suandrie Corbett het behoorlik standpunt ingeneem tydens die ATKV-redenaarskompetisie se semi-finale rondte by Hoërskool Hans Strijdom. Corbett het in die onvoorbereide afdeling, met haar redenasie rondom die waterkrisis in die Wes-Kaap wat voor die voete van die regering gelê moet word, skoonskip gemaak. Sy het geargumenteer dat die regering te laat geslaap het, dat daar nie reëls en sisteme in plek is om waterbesparing te bevorder nie, en laastens dat waterbronne uitgeput word deur die groot getalle buitelanders wat hier ‘n heenkome soek.

Tydens die kompetisie, waaraan sewe Plasie-redenaars deelgeneem het, word die top vyf deelnemers in elke graad aangekondig. Die twee bestes dring dan deur na die landswye finaal. Corbett het in die eersteplek geeïndig.

Hiermee volg sy in die voetspore van haar ouboet, Stefan, wat in 2016 aan die finaal deelgeneem het.

Stanford send Midranders packing

During the annual Beaulieu Derby hosted at Stanford Lake College this past weekend, a few rounds of friendly squash matches were played to round off the excitement of the traditional netball, rugby and hockey matches.

Following the round-robin style tournament on Saturday, Stanford’s Marc Stirling, ranked top of the log with Bryce Reed, Casper Venter and Lance Trueman occupying the second, third and fourth spots respectively.

Stanford’s ladies struggled to find form on the netball courts and will have to relook their strategies ahead of their coming league matches to be played against Merensky.

In the closest finish on the courts on the day, the

u/16 girls bowed to a 21-17 defeat. The junior u/14 girls lost their match with a score of 7-20 while the u/16B team settled for a 1-24 loss. The Second team also lost their match by 7 goals to Beaulieu’s 22 while the First team girls were sent back to the locker room with a 16-32 defeat.

The Stanford boys cleaned house on the rugby field and sent the visitors back to Midrand without a single win for the tournament. The u/15 boys were on fire with some exceptional running tactics employed by the backline and some great forward work earning them a 60-0 victory. The Second team showed some promise as they took to the field to prove a point. And prove it, they did. Stanford chalked up a score of 34 points in answer to Beaulieu’s 15 to win their game convincingly.

It was time for the Honey Badgers to take on

the might of the Beaulieu First XV in the headliner of the derby. It was a one-sided affair from the kick-off with Stanford showing great communication and exceptional running rugby. The hosts controlled possession during the entirety of the game and dominated their opponents 44 points to 10.

It was a good derby and one that would prove as a solid foundation for the rest of the league games against neighbouring schools in the area.

Badgers bother Beaulieu keepers Stanford Lake College hosted the teams of Beaulieu College for another round of winter sports league games. A Stanford / Beaulieu derby is always a spectacular day as both schools are known to be tough contenders on the sports fields.

On the hockey fields, it was up to the Honey Badgers to save face for the boys with all the junior teams bowing their heads in defeat to a much better prepared visitor. Both the u/14 and u/15 boys suffered a one goal defeat despite some good movements near the box. When the First team took to the pitch, the tension was tangible among the supporters as Stanford had managed to claim victory during all their previous

After the break it seemed as if the Beaulieu spirit had been broken when the Badgers slammed another in the back of the net to take their score to 3-0. The visitors picked up the pace and launched a counter attack in the dying minutes of the game to score a consolation goal and ease their defeat.

The Second team also netted a 1-1 draw while the u/16 team had to bow to a better prepared opponent with a 3-0 loss. The senior Laker Ladies were perfectly matched in their headline game later that afternoon. They defended exceptionally well throughout the duration of a relentless contest, showing some great fight. Both teams had a fair amount of chances to win the game. It was an impressive game of hockey and a pleasing result for both teams as they left the field a goal-apiece.

Fields of Red and Blue Two of the region’s top schools met on the hockey fields during a round of league games this past weekend. The games were hosted at Ben Vorster High school on Saturday morning and saw the teams of Merensky High pay a visit to the fields of the mighty Reds.

Both schools seemed evenly matched on the day with Merensky bringing a strong fight to their hosts in front of the goal boxes. Spectators crowded next to the fields in support of their favourites and the hockey on display did not disappoint.

In the opening game of the day, the u/14 girls took to the field.

Merensky seemed to be the better prepared team on the morning and slammed five goals passed the Vossie keeper to win their match 5-0. Two of their players, Emma Dalrymple-Hay and Luné Fritz were named players of the match.

the u/15 girls took to the field.

Ben Vorster revved into gear and dominated that game from the start. In true Vossie fashion they work the wings well to feed crosses to centre-field and score three well-deserved goals. Ben Vorster defended well to keep the Plasies at bay and win the game 3-0. A similar result was chalked up for the u/16 girls when Ben Vorster took advantage of their home ground and snuck a goal passed the Plasie keeper to win the game 1-0. Although the Second-team match yielded no goals until deep into the second half, Ben Vorster managed the winning goal.

The First team ladies had a fantastic match to round up the girls clashes of the day. In all aspects of the encounter, both teams were evenly matched with neither one being able to break the other’s defences. In the end, it boiled down to reserve and it was the visiting Plasies who snuck the winning goal into the Vossies

box to take the match 1-0. Roelien O’Neill was named player of the match.

In the boys hockey league it was a slightly one-sided affair as Merensky won each of the two matches in the u/16 and First team encounters. In the u/16 game it appeared as though the match would end in a draw as both teams defended extremely well. Shots at goal were deflected by the keepers and well-structured counter-attacks launched. It was only in the second half that Merensky managed to beat the Vossie-keeper and take the match 1-0.

Merensky’s first team were labelled as favourites before the weekend after they scored some great wins earlier in the league.

They did not disappoint and commanded a one-goal lead from early in the first half. They held onto the lead for the duration of the game and applied pressure in the second half to put two more passed the Reds’ keeper and win the game 3-0.

Vossie netbal nou beste in distrik Na afloop van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster - Merensky kragmeting, wat verlede Saterdag, plaasgevind het, is Ben Vorster se netbalspanne die algehele Mopani distrik wenners. Hoërskool Merensky het op Ben Vorster se bane aan ‘n reeks liga wedstryde deelgeneem. Die buur-skole het ‘n lang geskiedenis van wedywering tussen mekaar, en die kompetisie Saterdag was straf vir beide.

Ben Vorster het die druk op die dag beter geabsorbeer en daarin geslaag om al hul wedstryde op die dag, behalwe een, te wen. Die o/14B-span het hul wedstryd met vyf doele verloor om ‘n 6-13 telling op te skryf.

Zonika Stapelberg, die hoofdoel, was uiters akkuraat en danksy die goeie spel van Mokete Malete, in die doelsirkel, het die Vossies die doele ingeryg om 39-11 te wen.

Die O/16B’s het 36-13 gewen. Die O/17A’s het goeie en beheerde netbal gespeel. Die verdediger, Beverley Mackau, verdien erkenning vir haar

puik verdediging wat gehelp het om haar span ‘n 31-9 oorwinning te gee.

Die NTT Toyota O/19-span was oorgehaal vir aksie en het van die begin af gewys dat hulle honger vir ‘n oorwinning was. Hulle was hopeloos te sterk vir die bure en danksy goeie onderskeppings deur Meriam Modiba, en die akkurate doelwerk van Tshepang Pilusa, het hulle ‘n oortuigende oorwinning van 43-10 aangeteken. Hierdie span sal more in Polokwane aan die Limpopo kampioenskappe gaan deelneem.

Rivals meet in League

This past weekend saw Ben Vorster High play host to their neighbours, Merensky, in a very tough round of winter league games.

With a long history between them, both are seen as the two top schools in the area and any meeting between these two powerhouses always attracts massive support from the community. The grounds of Ben Vorster was packed to capacity with supporters clad in either blue and white or black and red. Entertainment was provided for young and old as they lined the sports fields to egg on their teams.

The rugby field is where the most heated action took place. What was expected to be a walk over for the mighty reds, turned out to be a tougher battle than anticipated.

Although the hosts recorded some fantastic wins on the day, it was the results of the junior teams that raised some eyebrows.

Merensky were regarded as the underdogs from the word go, but pulled up their socks and brought the fight to the mighty Red Machine nonetheless. In quite possibly the most nerve wracking clash on the day, Merensky’s u/14A team surprised everyone when they matched the might of the Vossies try after try to lose by only one point with a score of 21-22. The u/14B team repeated that performance and lost their game by a single try with 21-27. The biggest upset of the day however, was when Merensky’s u/15A boys chalked up a 10-point victory against what many regarded as the Vossies flagship team with a score of 20-10.

That defeat put the Vossies into overdrive and they kicked up a gear to not only win every other match on the day, but win by some impressive margins. The u/15B team

beat Merensky 44-7 while the u/16A team ended their match with a 37-5 win. The u/16B Vossies showed great ball control and some well executed movements to send the Plasies home with a 65-5 defeat. The Second and Third teams also won their games decisively with scores of 50-12 and 39-10 respectively.

In the headline rugby game of the day, the First team boys took to the field. It was clear from the start that the addition of coach Peter Schutte to the Vossie arsenal, and the recent pointers by some of the Springbok players, had definitely paid off. Ben Vorster controlled the game from the start, scoring seven tries in answer to only one by Merenksy. Shama Manzini opened the scoreboard for the hosts in the

first half which relieved some of the pressure from the boys. Shima Molepo added two more to the tally followed by Erik Meintjies, Nyiko Ntlemo and Anthony Tolmay to bring the final score to 43-11 in favour of the hosts.

Both teams felt the pressure and were equally punished for it, but at the end of the day it was a great display of sportsmanship and skill by both teams.

Ben Vorster will now revisit some of the strategies in preparation for an even tougher round of games tomorrow against their Polokwane rivals, PHS who will travel to Tzaneen as part of the FNB Classic Clashes tournament.
