Her half-naked body was discovered by her 16-year old son, Rolf, when he arrived home from school. She suffered a total of 21 stab wounds on her body. Her eyes had been gouged out with a sharp object, possibly the same weapon used in the attack. It appears as though she was raped as well. A defensive wound on her hand, between her index finger and thumb, points to her putting up a fight against her assailant(s). The name “Tefo” was carved into one of the cupboard doors by the killer, in the same room where he murdered her. She was found in her youngest daughter’s room. Evidence suggested that Wiers arrived home from the shop just after 12:00 that afternoon and that her assailants must have slipped into the yard while the security gate was closing. It is believed that she was confronted by the suspects in the kitchen. The knife used in the attack had been wiped clean, but was found in the basin with hair belonging to the victim

still on it. The motive for the murder is still not clear although she was robbed of her wedding ring, a toe ring, her diamond wristband and a tablet. The SAPS arrested a 25-year old male a few hours later. The suspect who allegedly worked in the neighbourhood was found in possession of the stolen items and apparently admitted to the crime. Wiers was a former Tzaneen resident who matriculated from Ben Vorster High School in 1991. Most locals remember her from the time she worked at First National Bank in 1996. Ten years later, in 2006, the family relocated to Polokwane. At the time of going to print the investigations into this murder were still underway and no new information had been released. “We are searching for a second individual who can assist us in solving this murder,” said Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, SAPS Limpopo spokesperson. Rolf Jnr is receiving trauma counselling. Bulletin was unable to reach her husband, Rolf Wiers, on his mobile after the incident. The couple was to celebrate their 21st wedding anniversary next week. The news of her gruesome death came as a shock to many locals who spoke fondly of her when asked. “She was a very caring soul, very soft-spoken and family orientated,” said one friend. “Her family was everything to her and she loved her husband. It is such a terrible tragedy.” — Joe Dreyer

Man survives hammer attack An elderly man, Brian Wesley (62) survived a brutal assault by three men on a plot near Letsitele on Monday. The attack took place on California plot 42 at around 07:00 that morning. The attackers entered the home of the victim and repeatedly struck him over the head with a hammer. Once he was unconscious, the suspects removed a safe from the house and cracked it open outside in the yard. They fled with its contents which included a shotgun, a .303 hunting rifle, a revolver and jewellery worth an undisclosed value.

According to information, Wesley is a lessee on the property and the owner was away on business at the time of the attack. None of the farm workers were apparently on the farm at the time of the incident either. A few hours later when one worker arrived to milk the cows, he discovered Wesley and alerted the authorities. He was rushed to Letaba hospital where he remained in a coma until Tuesday morning. The police investigative unit fine combed the scene and launched a search for the three suspects. The SAPS have confirmed the incident

and a case of Negligent Handling of Firearm against the owner of the property is currently being investigated. This is allegedly because the safe containing the firearms was not fixed to the wall as per legislation. Information was made available to us that the safe was removed from the wall due to construction on the premises. No further information was available at the time of going to print and no arrests had been made. — Joe Dreyer

Truter murder a mystery A suspect in the murder of Pats Truter (79) in Naboomspruit was arrested on Wednesday. The mother of well-known Letsitele preacher, Pastor Jan Truter, was found dead in the garage of her home in the Golfpark security complex in Mookgopong (Naboomspruit) last week Friday. It is not clear when she was murdered, but her body was discovered by a neighbour who went to her home to investigate after suspicion arose when they hadn’t seen her around the garden. Her body was found on the garage floor covered with towels and a rug taken from inside her home. Her arms were crossed neatly over her chest and the nylon rope, which police believe might have been used to strangle her, was still around her neck. An empty Black Label beer bottle and a soda tin, which were removed from her fridge, was found near her body. Inside her vehicle the police found hair matching the victim’s on the backseat. The home itself had not been ransacked as in the case of a house robbery – even her handbag remained untouched where she last left it. “It is a mystery to us,” said Pastor Truter, “she was such a caring woman and she had been living here for the

last fifteen years without incident. She was loved by this community who knew her well.” Pastor Truter expressed his gratitude at the way in which the head of Limpopo Detective Services, Brigadier James Espach and his team handled the case. “I have to thank Brigadier Espach for not only his team’s outstanding work, but for his compassion in the way that they handled the situation and commitment to bringing the perpetrators to book. After the incident was reported we received a phonecall from the police to offer their condolences and ever since, we have been receiving updates from them on the developments of the case.” The suspect arrested in connection with her murder is believed to have been a labourer from one of the garden service in the area. According to the detectives who made the arrest, a set of house keys, a cellular phone and some jewellery allegedly stolen during the murder was confiscated from the suspect. They are also investigating a second suspect, but at the time of going to print they had not made any further arrests. The motive for this senseless killing is still not certain. A memorial service for Pats will be held today in the Dutch Reformed Church in Mookgopong. She is survived by her two sons, Jan and Ben, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. — Joe Dreyer:

The roads around key areas of Tzaneen are rapidly deteriorating. Potholes and in some cases even trenches in the road surface force motorists to swerve blindly into oncoming traffic and in other instances pull over to the side of the road and wait for cars to pass before continuing on their way. Areas worst affected are the two roads bordering Magic Builders Warehouse (Peace and Messer Streets), the road past Van Velden Hospital’s entrance (Third Avenue), the road passing by Ben Vorster High School (Adshade Street) and section at the lower end of Boundary Street. Motorists have inundated our offices with complaints regarding the state of the roads and the dangers posed to road-users by the interlink delivery trucks off-loading cement and timber. “These trucks don’t care. They park in the middle of the street, blocking our way in either direction in the mornings during rush-hour traffic while forklifts off-load pallets

of cement and timber.” The areas along Messer Street where these trucks operate, are nearly completely destroyed which has already caused damage to smaller vehicles in the past. “Whenever we complain about it, the management of the stores just brush us off. We lodge complaints to the Traffic department and nothing happens.” At Van Velden Hospital’s entrance, one lane is completely impassable and motorists are seen queuing daily to avoid oncoming traffic. Taxi’s and ambulances drive on the pavement here. This week Bulletin noticed that the hardware store had covered some of the potholes with building rubble in an effort to calm the community. We have not been able to reach them for comment, but will follow up on the issue with the retailers and GTM alike. A follow-up will be published in our next edition. — Joe Dreyer

Clinix Phalaborwa to close doors Back to the future. Is this what awaits the residents of Phalaborwa after the news of the closure of the Clinix Private hospital this week? This picture of the hospital entrance was taken in 2010 before the private health group stepped in.

The Clinix Health Group have confirmed the closure of their private hospital operations in Phalaborwa effective immediately. The news broke earlier this week when employees of the hospital were reportedly issued notices that they would have to vacate their homes on the hospital grounds. One of the employees told Bulletin that the closure came as a complete surprise and will have a devastating impact on the local community. A source close to the case revealed that the closure of the hospital will mean that patients will need to be rushed to Tzaneen to be assisted. “Should you have a life-threatening emergency you would quite possibly not survive. The government clinics and hospitals here are not up to standard. You pay a visit to one of the state facilities at your own risk.” Member of the Phalaborwa Pri-

vate Hospital board, Mr Hans Harri, confirmed that the facility would be closing its doors, but could not elaborate on the reasons for the closure. “We are having a board member meeting to gain clarity on the issue and discuss our options moving forward. After the meeting we will provide detailed feedback.” The hospital opened its doors on Monday, 4 June 2012. The facility from which the Clinix Private hospital operated in Phalaborwa, belongs to the Limpopo Department of Health and was leased to the group in accordance with a Public Private Partnership agreement between the two parties. Now that the private group will be closing its doors and vacating the premises, the Department will look at the future of the facility going forward. When exactly this will happen and

what they intend to repurpose the facility for, is not yet certain. “At this stage we are not certain of when the premises will be vacated by the Clinix Group and until we have been officially informed of a date, we cannot speculate. We will be able to strategize accordingly,” said Derick Kganyago, Department of Health Limpopo spokesperson. “We will have to inspect the facility and look at the budgetary implications of operating a clinic, or a hospital or medical facility there and how that will impact the community.” We have issued the Clinix Health Group with an official media enquiry and they have promised to give us feedback today. Bulletin will update this story as it unfolds. — Joe Dreyer

Pharmacy allegedly targeted Two men were arrested in Tzaneen this week on charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery when the police received a tip off of a planned heist. The information suggested that the robbery would take place at a pharmacy in town. A tactical response team was assembled and on Monday evening the police stopped and arrested two men travelling in a white Isuzu bakkie with no number plates. The vehicle is believed to have been stolen earlier. The registration plates of the vehicle, CYT 637 L, were found inside the cab. The two suspects, aged 29 and 44 respectively, are from Tickyline and Mogapeng outside the Maake area. In their possession the police found two firearms. A black CZ 9mm pistol and a 7.65 pistol with serial numbers filed off. Three cell phones and two balaclavas were also seized. The suspects are set to appear in the local Magistrate’s court soon and will face

charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, possession of a suspected stolen vehicle and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. Although the specific pharmacy has not been named for security purposes, police have advised business owners operating in the Tzaneen CBD area to be vigilant and report suspicious vehicles or individuals to authorities immediately. — Joe Dreyer

Our Opinion

The Message

Politically Correct(ed) Three murders and one attempted murder. One week. It has been a bloody seven days. In light of the recent attacks a pattern has once again emerged. It is a stark reminder that all is not well in South Africa’s budding democratic society. In all three cases this past week the victims were of a certain demographic and the perpetrators of another. All three of the murders were accompanied by horrific, barbaric acts of aggression and vulgarity to the extent that a hardened policeman described one crime scene as something he had never before encountered. But, we are not allowed to discuss this, it is politically incorrect to point out certain eye opening facts at the risk of prosecution. You see, our society has become so bent on political correctness that analysing a crime is viewed as equally offensive as committing the crime itself. It saddens me to think that our democracy has become so confined. Why would anyone stab a helpless woman 21 times, rape her, gouge out her eyes and then take the time to scratch their name into a cupboard door next to her body with the knife they used to end her life with? For jewellery? Similarly, why would three men overpower one elderly man, alone in his home, bash him over the head with a hammer until he lapses into a coma and then steal a safe? Then, while still at the home of the victim, take the time to open the safe and remove its contents? How is murdering a 79-year old widow by strangulation, covering her body under a rug and then taking a beer from her fridge and finishing it in her car next to the body NOT labelled a hate crime? This has nothing to do with any specific ethnicity, it has to do with facts and statistics. Those numbers do not paint a very positive picture, certainly not for a specific sector of a specific demographic in our specific society. Political correctness is just another way of controlling information to the masses and it will prove to be our greatest downfall in the years to come.

Tref my as jy kan!” U is waarlik God!”

Five lion killers nabbed

The police arrested five suspects for contravening the laws governing the protection of specially protected animals last week. The men were arrested in Phalaborwa after the police acted on information from the community that they were selling a white lion head. The five suspects aged between 26 and 70-years old were found in possession of the lion’s head and at this stage it is suspected that the head could be connected to one of the lions slaughtered in Tzaneen earlier in January. Oral Kubayi (46), Gilbert Mabunda (70), Lijawa Ngobeni (44), Zwelile Bvuma (26) and Titus Deane (48) all appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate’s court on Monday where their cases were postponed to 13 February for formal bail applications. The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba, commended the swiftness with which the members operationalized the information. He also thanked members of the community for their involvement in providing the information that led to the arrests. Police detectives are continuing their investigations in an effort to link the suspects to other similar poaching cases reported around the province. — Joe Dreyer

The first of the qualifying rounds of the Western Mounted Games took place last week and these two Wolkberg Akedemie riders were awarded for their participation. Dalienke Grobbelaar took four fourth places and Dawid-Nel showed great potential in his participation.

Coenie de Lange as adjunkhoof aangekondig. De Lange was ‘n departementshoof by Hoërskool Louis Trichardt waar hy vir 12 jaar betrokke was. “Onderwys is my passie”, sê De Lange.

Dr Annecke Primary’s riders performed just as well during the Western Mounted Games qualifying rounds with Stefaans van Jaarsveld competing on Level 1 Schools and claiming one first place, two second places, one third position, one fourth place and overall third position on his division. In the level 0 School division, Dylon Bond took three second places, two third positions

Schmidt takes gold Four swimmers from Stanford Lake College were entered into the Limpopo Schools Championships which took place at the end of January in Polok-

and an overall second place in the schools division. In the open division Bond claimed a first place, two second positions, two third places and an overall first place. AJ van der Westhuizen finished with one third place, three fourth places and an overall fourth position in the schools division. Egbert Mooi showed great form and potential during the competition.

wane. These four swimmers hauled back a five-medal tally for their efforts. Anika Schmidt took the gold in the 200m backstroke.

Danica Altenroxel, a Grade 9 pupil from Stanford Lake College, attended the Stellenbosch Math Camp from the 4th to the 9th of December last year. She was exposed to a completely different level of Math, with her class (the beginners) doing Math that not even the Grade 12 pupils are exposed to. The topics she covered were Number Theory, Geometry, Trigonometry and Algebra. Each day consisted of close on seven hours of lectures, with a two hour test on the first and last days. “It was an amazing experience and one that has me excited for this year’s Math Olympiad,” she said.

‘n Hartlike Vossie verwelkoming aan me Sanine Vermeulen.

Stanford dominated IAM

SLC receiving the winning trophy from left to right: Headmaster of Eagles Nest School, Larema Rix (Head Girl), Mfumo Mongwe (Boys Athletics Captain), Anke Vaughan (Girls Athletics Captain) and Paul Dando (Head Boy).

Stanford Lake College’s athletics team performed well at this year’s Independent Schools Athletics in Polokwane earlier this month. The athletes had been training hard since the start of the year for this event and their hard work really paid off with numerous records falling on the day. The school boasted a podium finish by one of their athletes in almost every event. The depth of this year’s team was demonstrated in the College’s dominance of both track and field events.

Stanford Lake won the day by just over 100 points, which is one of the largest winning margins in recent years. “Congratulations to all the athletes who took part, and thank you to the rest of the school, and parents, who supported them so well,” said Rona McGaffin of Stanford Lake. Lia Revelas received the Junior Victrix Ludorum while her male counterpart, Rofhiwa Nevhutali took home the Junior Victor. Senior Victrix went to another Stanford athlete, Mokgadi Mangena.

Athletics worse off than swimming? It was a bad start to 2017 for sporting codes in the Limpopo province as primary schools athletics also came under the spotlight at the annual Mopani Cluster championships last week. The event is of crucial importance to athletes vying for a place in the provincial team and secure a place at the nationals. The only facility (supposedly) adequate enough to host an event of this magnitude is the Nkowankowa stadium with its tartan track just outside Tzaneen. Bulletin paid a visit to the event last week and were shocked at our findings. There was very little left of the tartan surface on the track and lanes were dotted with potholes resembling buckshot damage to a target on a shooting range. Sand from the long jump pit next to the track covered sections of two lanes. On the day at least three runners slipped and fell because of it. This was not cleaned up even once during the entire meeting by any of the officials. The take-off board at the long jump pit was not fastened to the ground properly and had no silicone adhesive left on its edges. Not only were the facilities themselves completely dilapidated, but the officials and time keepers appointed to ensure compliance on the day had clearly not received any

without disqualification. The tape measure used to measure the long jump distances was twisted. The officials either did not know that this could significantly influence the jumpers’ distance measurements, or did not care, because nobody rectified it. The timekeepers were huddled together in a soccer bunker a meter from the finish line. At one point they sat facing one another instead of track. The middle and long distance runners were caught on camera as they cut corners across the field in full view of the umpires, without disqualification. The primary schools athletics championships form part of the Schools Athletics South Africa (SASA) body which is governed by Athletics South Africa (ASA) regulations. On their website the organization clearly states a number of regulatory practices that need to be adhered to by provincial bodies in order to render an athletics meeting acceptable. At a glance it is clear that none of the standardized rules had been enforced by any of the officials or judges in Nkowankowa. The impact of these sub-par conditions on the careers of promising youngsters can be devastating and could fuel the current decline in school level participation as recorded in 2010 by Sports Trader magazine.

form of satisfactory training or compliance briefings. The sheer incapability of the officials to conduct even the most standard of tasks was astonishing. Three hurdles races were run without all the hurdles being placed on the track. When the officials were informed of the mishap, nothing was done to rectify it. Sprints consisting of eight runners in eight lanes had only five time keepers. Competitors ran out of their lanes and into runners on their flanks

This week another circuit event was held with similar conditions which has had parents and schools up in arms. “We pay a lot of money for coaching, gear and traveling in order to support our young athletes and provide them with the opportunity to compete nationally. When we have to deal with this type of absolute mismanagement and disregard, we become discouraged and our children stop participating in the sport.” Attempts to contact a spokesperson of SASA or LIMSA (the provincial branch) were in vain. Bulletin has constructed official inquiries to both these governing bodies and will be contacting the municipality for comment on the dastardly state of the facilities. Bulletin will publish a follow up in our next edition. Watch the video of the pandemonium on our website at The track has become hazardous to the athletes, especially

Last Chance optimism Many of the region’s finest swimmers participated in the aptly named “Last Chance” gala this weekend in Tzaneen. This is a very important event on the annual calendar as it offers swimmers a final chance to record qualifying times for the South African Youth Championships. During this gala their times will also qualify them for level 1, 2 and 3 provincial colours. This week, the swimming fraternity suffered a major setback when the gala, which was supposed to be held in the Tzaneen municipal swimming bath, had to

be moved to the indoor pool at Ben Vorster High School a day before the time. The move was not only embarrassing for the local clubs, but also impacted drastically on the validity of the times recorded by the swimmers on the day. The Tzaneen swimming bath is an Olympic size, 50m bath while the facility at the high school is only 25m in length. Short course baths impact on a swimmer’s times as it allows for a turn halfway through the distance. For the butterfly and breaststroke swimmers this is a decided disadvantage as they do not have the advantage of a freestyle or backstroke participant who uses the tumble to turn. This means that in many cases the times differ with up to a full second. The other issue the local swimmers face is that because they have been forced to train in a short-course bath for the past two years, they struggle to maintain their stroke and stamina when they compete in the

standard sized pools at Polokwane, Kingspark or Hillcrest where most of the provincial and national events are hosted. According to the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) the gala could not be hosted in the bath because of an electrical fault which caused the pumps and the pool cleaning equipment not to work. “We couldn’t clean the swimming bath, because there was an issue with the power and we had technicians trying to sort out the Distribution Board. So after all of the previous issues we had with leaks, we were just as disappointed to discover that we had an electrical problem. We therefore had to move the gala to another facility,” said Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM. Bulletin has contacted Limpopo Swimming and they will be issuing a statement on the matter in our next edition. At the time of going to print it was still not clear as to whether the electrical issue at the bath had been rectified. — Joe Dreyer
