Who’s fooling who? GTM blames community for funding issues A week before Christmas, she ﬁnally released the funds for the rewiring to be done, but by then it was too late as the contractors had closed shop for the holidays. According to Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM, there was a valid reason for this. “There are internal processes and legislation to be followed and the CFO has to satisfy herself that these laws have been adhered to and where they are not, she has to demand that it be corrected, that’s why there was a delay,” he said. Trees and shrubbery which are left to grow unabated underneath powerlines are a major issue too. During strong winds and storms, branches blow against the powerlines and cause shorts which lead to power outages. The GTM has failed to maintain the clearing of electrical lines and the situation escalated to the point that AfriForum Tzaneen pitched in and cleaned sections of lines themselves. The GTM (shockingly) blamed their lack of vegetation control on Working on Fire. “We did engage Working on Fire previously, they did not have a project manager. We worked with them and they disappeared after a week. There is also a need to pay them for the work.” So did the GTM not pay a contractor for work already completed? Clarity on this has been sought and we will report on that next week. It is believed that at some point in the meeting, Ms Lion stood up and walked out of the chamber. This is believed to have followed after the farmers demanded that oﬃcials who do not perform their duties be removed from

their positions. What action will the GTM take against underperforming officials? Staying on topic, it was announced that a new director for the electrical department would be appointed soon, an action plan would be structured and communicated with the farmers and that power will be restored by no later than today. The GTM clearly views deadlines as lower on the priority list as Ndlala explained, “power has been restored in most areas, verify with the farmers. In terms of deadlines; I think we can engage if they are not met. We set deadlines and if there are changes or developments we will communicate with the farmers.” A number of questions remain unanswered, but the problem seems strikingly clear. “As it has been stated, we have overlooked the funding for network upgrades and refurbishment for years due to competing community needs, we therefore must consider other funding models to make up for the deficit in funding for network upgrades and refurbishments of power lines. You need to remember that the budget is a consultative process where communities make inputs before council finalises. So the previous budgets that did not sufficiently cater for electricity were based on community inputs.” At the time of going to print we had not received any clarity on whether the power disruptions in the farming areas had been restored but farmers have looked to other solutions and are planning a mass prayer meeting to ask for a solution to the crisis. — Joe Dreyer: joe@bulletin.us.com

Last week Bulletin reported on the meeting held at the chambers of the GTM between top management and a handful of farmers. The meeting was to find solutions to the power crisis which has crippled businesses in the GTM’s area of jurisdiction. The Bulletin was refused access to the meeting although a journalist from another local paper was allowed to sit in. The farmers who turned Bulletin away claimed that this was because the GTM would call off the meeting if we were present. The GTM denied this claim and said they had no knowledge of such an arrangement. During the meeting the acting electrical chief, Sam Lelope, admitted that the electrical system of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality had outlived its lifespan and needed urgent refurbishment. This crisis was forewarned by the former electrical department head, Pierre van den Heever who resigned in July last year. Van den Heever listed his frustration with the lack of prioritizing maintenance on the power grid as one of the motivators behind his departure. The GTM acknowledged that 19 transformers were standing in the workshop of a rewinder in the area. According to our information these transformers were sent for repairs 18 months ago, but due to GTM Chief Financial Officer, the embattled Norah Lion, not signing off for the repairs, the work was never done. This led to a major upset two weeks ago when transformers burnt out in Henley and there were no replacements available.

Creativity in tandem A Haenertsburg couple work side-byside creating works of art in pottery, mosaic and stained glass. Marion and Eric de Jonge moved to the village from Florida in Gauteng more than six years ago. They built their own house to suit their new lives. After decades of hard work in the hotel and catering industry, they were ready to follow their other passions. Eric, born and raised in Limburg in southern Holland, was well-known in culinary circles. Their staircase wall has countless framed national newspaper clippings of his many achievements. Marion, born in Innsbruck in Austria, was PA to the manager of the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton. Their ground ﬂoor home is their Earth Creations studio and showroom. The work area is split in two with a partition and shelving. Eric has one side and Marion the other. Marion says that she inherited her artistic ability from her internationally ac-

claimed mother. Herlinde Pucks painted in oils depicting the nature of Europe. Her themes ranged from the Alps to European fauna and flora. Both Marion and her mother played piano. When Marion was 12 she fashioned a tiny open grand piano with the black and white keys out of plastercine. Herlinde told her daughter then that she had art in her genes. Marion and Eric met in London UK some 40 years ago. She was an au pair and he worked at the Hilton Hotel. They married in Holland. It was while living and working in Brussels in Belgium, that Eric accepted the offer to head up the Sandton Sun Hotel. That was some three decades ago. When Marion stopped work at the Michelangelo, she took painting lessons in Florida. Now she gives pottery lessons and works in pottery and mosaics. She says, “I work almost every day. I feel sick if I don’t get my hands in the clay.” Her most difficult piece of pottery was a 70cm high Chinese styled lantern. The bow legs and in squares were very challenging. Marion often mixes mosaic with pottery and makes her own tiles. She has a small and large electric kiln, a gas raku oven that Eric made

for her and a pit-ﬁre. Her range of wildlife skulls is very popular. She refashions the skulls, puts back the animal’s fur and decorates them with mosaics. Eric used to make award-winning sculptures out of butter and ice. As he wanted to work in glass, it was a natural progression to move towards stained glass. With his woodwork ability, he’s made some beautiful pieces. Junk shop ﬁnds often become stained glass works of art. He removes spent wooden paneling from old doors and replaces it with stained glass. Eric also restores stained glass and recently restored the stained glass in two oval old, broad oak framed windows for a client in Melville, Johannesburg. —Sue Ettmayr

No respect for the dead A Graveyard in Moime village, outside Tzaneen has been left to ruin. The community blame vandals and neighborhood children who run amuck inside these grounds, but evidence suggests that little to no maintenance is being done at the site (much the same as in the case with the oldest cemetery in Tzaneen). The headman of Moime village, Phineas Lepulana, addressed parents and members of the community at a recent funeral and implored them to teach their children to stop playing in cemeteries. This followed after children were seen playing on tombstones and collecting coins that family members leave behind after rituals at the site of their loved ones. “I grew up knowing that the graveyard is a respected place. So the children of today do not even know that playing in the grave-

yard will bring them bad luck and they will not grow older like me,” he said. “Before

the Easter holidays, a family from Sekgaola Village in our area came to us to report that their tombstone was vandalized. After that we started to patrol the area to see who is re-

sponsible for the damages and that is when we spotted a group of children playing there. We have asked the municipality for a fence two years back, but as usual nothing has come of that request,” he concluded. “We are aware of the problem in this speciﬁc graveyard and we have started making arragements to have that fence erected,” said Cllr of GTM Ward 33, Sophia Rakganya. “This should be done in no time. Seven arrested before robbery

Seven suspects were arrested and two stolen vehicles recovered in a massive intelligence led operation just outside Burgersfort over the weekend. Following a tip oﬀ concerning a planned business robbery, a task team was assembled composing of members from the Provincial Tracking Team, Tactical Response Teams

and provincial detective branches. The team spotted two suspicious vehicles in the vicinity of the target-business and pounced on the suspects apprehending the seven men. They were all between the ages of 24 and 53 years. In their possession the team found and confiscated a 14-channel signal jamming device, two 9mm pistols with live ammunition, four angle grinders, one compressor, one jack hammer, 18 grinder cutting discs, two electrical extension cords, five balaclavas, five pairs of gloves and two stolen vehicles including a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Tazz. At the time of going to print, police stated that the suspects were being profiled to determine their involvement in other serious crimes in the province. They have, in the meantime, appeared in the Burgersfort Magistrate’s Court on charges of conspiracy to commit business robbery, housebreaking and theft, possession of

unlicensed ﬁrearms and ammunition, possession of housebreaking equipment, possession of signal jamming devices and possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles. The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba commended the members for a sterling proactive Police work. He thanked community members for assisting the Police in foiling these crimes and urged them to continue doing so in order to rid this Province of any form of criminality. — Joe Dreyer

A South African soldier and his Senegalese accomplice were arrested in Phalaborwa over the weekend for possession of illegal ammunition. The arrests came after police spotted 40-year old Santos Leon Congo walking down Spekboom Street in Phalaborwa at around 17:30 on Saturday afternoon, carrying a suspiciously large bag. Bus crash kills four

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by Limpopo police following an accident near the Giyani CBD over the weekend. The accident involved a Hyundai sedan and a Great North Transport bus. According to information the sedan and bus were travelling in opposite directions when the sedan collided head-on with the bus. During the gruesome incident, the sedan landed under the bus which

killed all four of its occupants including the driver. They were declared dead on the scene and have not yet been identiﬁed because of the state of their bodies. At the time of going to print it was reported that at least ten occupants of the bus had sustained injuries. Although the cause of the accident is not yet certain, preliminary reports allegedly indicate that one of the vehicles was overtaking at a blindspot on the route. Our Opinion Aint no stopping now On Tuesday morning I decided it can’t be as bad as I thought. So I took the ol’ camera out and spent exactly seven minutes at the intersection between Hospitaal Street and Second Ave, right in front of our offices – you know, the one by Park Butchery. Soon the first vehicle approached the intersection… and drove right through it without even as much as an attempt by the driver to slow down. “Idiot,” I muttered to myself. Then a second vehicle approached and did the same, then a third, a fourth, a fifth and just when I thought this madness had reached its climax, an ambulance came screaming over the stop sign. I stood there in utter disbelief as one after the other, motorists drove through that intersection as if it were never there. Camera in hand I rushed toward the blindingly red, planetary-sized stop sign in an effort to flag one of the drivers down. The first guy looked at me as if to ask “how dare you interrupt me mid-crimen juria” and a second guy looked as though he was actually aiming his Amarok in my direction. Perhaps my most shocking observation that morning, was not the complete obliviousness of Tzaneen road-users (by now that’s pretty much common knowledge), but it was noticing that the handful of drivers who actually obeyed the stop sign were taxi-drivers. Three of the five taxi’s I saw that morning, came to a dead stop before driving through the intersection. The worst offenders? Middle-aged men in hatchbacks. I posted the video online and it spread like wildfire almost instantly. Tzaneen residents weren’t shocked as much as they were excited at the chance of naming other intersections around town that needed reporting. Hundreds of correspondence were received which has prompted me into birthing a weekly video blog on our website at www.bulletin.us.com and in conjunction with local traffic enforcement, those cannot obey the rules of the road will be brought to book. So next time stop and look around before you enter an intersection. Who knows who might be watching?

Soos met die salm wat die heeltyd hulle oog hou op die plek waar hulle gebore is, sal Paulus se terapie dalk baie help, om ons by die einde van die jaar uit te bring. Hy stel dit in Hebreërs 12:2 – 3 voor: “Hou jou oog gevestig op Jesus, dan sal jy nie geestelik moeg word en uitsak nie.” Ek dink dit is uitstekende raad en kom ons maak Openbaring 3:2 ons leuse vir 2017: “Volhard, verduur baie en moenie moeg word nie.” Sterkte vir 2017!

Theft spells the end of a thriving business On the night of 13 January thieves cut the lock at the entrance to Sandford Heights near the Magoebaskloof Hotel just off the R71. They parked under the trees out of road sight and forced their way into the tea garden and shop. All fridges and electrical appliances were stolen. Owners Erie and Laurie Railton have announced that the restaurant at Sandford

Heights is closed until further notice. The couple will continue with the nursery but the constant thefts and this final wipe-out probably means an end to the restaurant. Stanford Juniors take 19 annual challenge th

Stanford Lake College played host to the annual Adventure Challenge for Schools event during the first week of December last year. The event consisted of many disciplines, including rafting, mountain biking, trail running, swimming, obstacles, first aid, rope traverse and structure building to name a few. Teams from Zimbabwe, Zambia, and South Africa went head-to-head over four days. This year, the event kicked off with a scheduled night rafting challenge which acted as an ice breaker for the rest of the week. On the morning of day 2, the teams spent their day on Ebenezer Dam with water activities as well as land navigation and problem solving. This was made a little bit more difficult with low visibility because of the mist and mountain weather. After lunch, the teams were briefed on the next stage based in Louis Trichardt, where they travelled to in the afternoon to be ready to start the next morning. Day 3 started at 04:00 at Louis Trichardt high school and finished 50km later on a farm next to the Veld School. There they were given more activities to complete before being briefed about the Vasbyt day. The Vasbyt day started at 05:00 with mountain biking and a couple of hike-a-bike sections to get to Medike in the Sand River valley. From there, they had to bike past Mara station and eventually finished at Schoemansdal EEC doing a zipline and swim to the finish. Temperatures of 40oC pushed the competitors to the limits.

The last morning started at 06:00 back at Stanford Lake College with a long paddle on Ebenezer to the Haenertsburg Trout Association and back. Then they had to complete 7 activities in any order before they could swim to the floating structure in the middle of the lake – take the 8m jump and swim to the finish. Team Ubuntu from Stanford Lake College finished in second place overall and were outclassed by their junior team

During the Interhouse meet on Thursday, 11 January at Merensky High School no present records were safe. Athletes were eager to make 2017 their best season yet. No less than 39 records were broken. Congratulations to the grade 11’s who won the day. Runners-up were the grade 8’s, proving their commitment and team spirit from the word “go”. Best junior field athletes were Nikita Pohl and Janco Coetzee, while Zuleike

Ferns and Ignatius Stucki reigned on the track. At senior level, Sancha van Niekerk once again was a force to be reckoned with, by being the best girl on the track. Newcomer, Reuben Caroto, inspired with his first performance as a Plasie and won the best boy on the track title. On the field, Lourentia van Dyk, with her steady performance and Marnus Grobler, also a new Plasie, reigned supreme. Merensky will compete at Louis Trichardt High School on Saturday, 21 January, in their run-up towards the Lowveld Interhigh on 24 January at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
