Pitch black silence

Bulletin was denied access to a meeting between members of the Letaba / Letsitele farming communities and top management of the municipality to discuss a way forward in ending the current power crisis. This important meeting was held yesterday in the chambers of GTM Mayor, Maripe Mangena. It was attended by Mangena, the Municipal Manager, Selomo Monakedi and the acting Electrical chief, Sam Lelope. Exactly why Bulletin editor, Joe Dreyer, was denied attendance remains a mystery, but he was informed by a member of the farming community that he was not welcome as it may negatively influence the outcome. “If you attend this meeting it will be cancelled. We will send you minutes after the fact.” Excluding the media from a public gathering, or any community forum, opens that meeting up for scrutiny and flies directly in the face of the Public Access to Information Act. It also proves that transparency is but a

buzz-word in the halls of local government. The time for talking has come to an end as there is no longer a “looming power crisis” or “an inevitable collapse of the power grid” to warn about – that crisis is here. It has happened and the GTM needs to stand up to their inefficiencies and inform their community of the measures they have in place to counter it. While councillors make promises in meetings that should have been held months ago, farmers continue to bleed money as electricians struggle to keep pack houses, hatcheries, nurseries, saw mills, farms and other agricultural operations online. And the Letsitele areas are not the only ones affected. Patrick Bremner, who owns a small sawmill outside Haenertsburg, said his business is being severely affected by the constant and lengthy power cuts. His factory is not operating, yet he still has to pay 20 employees. Bremner paid Lelope, a visit on Monday. He gave Bremn-

er the assurance that he would sort it out. Power was still not restored to the sawmill and he paid Lelope another visit on Tuesday. Lelope again assured him that he was going to the power station, this time he would visit the station himself to sort it out. This has apparently not yet been done. According to information, only one person allegedly man’s three phones at the GTM call centre. Calls aren’t logged and callers have no idea where they are in the automated complaints queue. Yet the GTM boldly proclaimed that they are rectifying the situation and even urged residents to log their complaints on the 24-hour call centre hotline. What was said during yesterday’s meeting had not been shared with the media at the time of going to print, but word is that the fight is not yet over. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
