— Louis Roux louis@bulletin.us.com

(gekolonialiseer) Koloniseer ko-lo-ni-seer’ ww.

Luigatte!

Trained yoga teacher returns to Limpopo Ms Rose Überbacher (41) is tall and slim with a mop of curly black hair. She has the suppleness of a dancer but is a highly trained yoga teacher. Überbacher, who grew up and went to school in Polokwane, spent a number of years abroad. She attended the British school of Yoga in London and took a year to qualify. Most taxing was the oral examination, which took her a week. She says that it’s easier to do yoga than to talk. However, she did extremely well getting 94% for the exam. Her inspiration was Ms Barbara Curry’s yoga video. Curry was in her mid 60s when she released her yoga video. Überbacher then wrote to Mr Godfrey Devereaux in Ibiza who was trained by Iyenga. He teaches Ashtanga Vinyasa. Ashtanga means grounding postures and Vinyasa means flow between postures. It was an intense six weeks of training, three hours a day. Afterwards she was told, “You will make a brilliant teacher but you’ll run away to the mountains.”

Überbacher then lived at a college in the town of Ystrad Mynach in Wales and studied anatomy and physiology plus holistic therapy for a year. She says, “If you want to be registered to do yoga in the UK you have to have an understanding of your basic physical structure. Yoga is, after all, body science.” As a single mother with a young son, she felt that schooling in the UK was inadequate and returned to South Africa to enroll her son in a good Limpopo-based school. Überbacher was at the Haenertsburg Hall treating the public to her other disciplines of reiki, head massage and reflexology during the Spring Fair. She has the hands of a healer and through her hands she treated one customer whose body was a mass of bubbles and incredible pain. The almost hour long session brought immeasurable relief to the customer. Überbacher has started yoga classes in Tzaneen and Haen-

We don’t pay rent here The parking lot next to the now dilapidated Letaba Boulevard building in the heart of Tzaneen has become a cesspool. Residents and business owners have raised concerns over the state of the premises, the lack of sanitation at the site and the lingering stench of rotten meat. The problem stems from the food stalls and street sellers who operate at the site daily with no regard to health and safety legislation or the aesthetics of their immediate surroundings. Meat is prepared at the stalls over open fires and gas stoves and reports have surfaced of chickens being slaughtered on site and the carcases disposed of in the field behind the stalls. The hawkers wash their dishes, pots and cooking utensils here too. With no proper waste disposal system in place, the drains at the site have become clogged with fat, oil and other waste, which in turn has resulted in a stench

that has a negative impact on the businesses in that area. Two years ago the GTM was approached with the same concerns from the same business which prompted the council to seek a solution to the problem. Their solution was to erect

formal trading posts for the hawkers which would not only be easy on the eye as it replaced the makeshift sink and cloth shacks, but would also generate income to the municipality as the hawkers would pay rental for their trading space. “That idea didn’t last very long,” said one businessman from the area, “not a few months later, the hawkers took the very same cloth and sink sheets and erected new shacks right in front of the formal trading blocks. It’s like living next to a squatter camp! How many are legally allowed to be here? All I know for sure is that the unsightly mess and the rotting stench is seriously affecting my business.” Bulletin conducted a video interview with one of the traders who admitted that they don’t pay rent as they have been waiting for the GTM to give them an amount. She also explained that they pour their waste on the concrete slab behind their stall each day. In addition to this, the trader told Bulletin that they generate a significant daily income. “We charge R50 for a full plate and we serve between 10 and 15 customers daily. That number increases drastically at month-end.” A plate consists of pap, salad and a choice of beef or chicken pieces. The GTM said that they are all too aware of the problem at this site and that steps are being taken to rectify the matter. “We are in the processes of finalising the lease agreements for all the 14 hawkers onsite, as soon as we are done they will then start to pay,” said spokesperson Neville Ndlala. “We have also detected that they slaughter chickens onsite which is prohibited and they have been warned to stop or be issued with a spot fine.”

Concerning the general state of the site, Ndlala said that a meeting with the relevant internal stakeholders has been scheduled in order to address the matter. “We have also detected that the drainage system leaves a lot to be desired and that problem has been escalated to the relevant department to resolve.” Ndlala further stated that the municipality has a health inspector who regularly visits the site. Who the health inspector is, or how much rent the hawkers will pay, remains a mystery. Bulletin has forwarded another enquiry on the matter to Ndlala and we will report his response in our next issue. Three day inferno under control It was a rollercoaster ride for the firefighters at Deerpark, just outside Tzaneen, this week as they fought relentlessly over the course of three days to contain a runaway fire. Reports of a small fire starting on a farm in that area reached the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) on Thursday morning when Merensky Timbers requested a spotter and a helicopter team to be sent to the plantation. The fire was brought under control quickly through the expertise of the highly skilled LFPA pilots who returned to base shortly thereafter. Later that morning however, the fire started up again and soon the hot temperatures, dry veld and windy conditions had fuelled the fire into a raging inferno which threatened to consume hectares of plantation in that area. A massive effort was launched by the LFPA in conjunction with Working on Fire, their partners and the private sector to bring the runaway fire under control. The attack included more than 200 fire fighters on the ground at the fire line, two helicopters and their spotter, and a number of what are called “bakkie sakkies”. Reinforcements from Polokwane, Soekmekaar and Sekororo were also brought in to assist. The scale of the operation was so vast that on a single day the helicopters consumed up to 7 000 litres of fuel as they fought the flames from the skies in winds that measured nearly 30 kilometres an hour. At the head of the operation stood Fire Manager, Rouan Snyman and IC Hannes Enslin, who in turn collaborated with the ground teams, the heli-tac teams and the control

The brave pilots during the three day battle were Danie Barnard (Chopper), Siem Venter (Spotter), Paul Bester (Chopper), Simon Venter (Spotter), Fred Viljoen (Chopper), Louw van der Merwe (Spotter) and Neil Mostert (Chopper). The fire was eventually contained and the situation is being monitored carefully as reports are still coming in of smoke in parts of that area. The fire had destroyed more than 1 000 hectares of plantation land and stretched over three areas including Triangle, Greystone and Dovey. — Joe Dreyer

Speaking of change

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church

Change, it’s a good thing if you accept it for what it is – a chance to grow. My father once told me that the most important ability a person can develop is to remain teachable. He was right because let’s face it, we learn something new every day and today is definitely not the same as yesterday. Currently, a lot of different changes are taking place around the country with the students destroying educational institutions with no regard for their own future, our sports teams falling from grace and a general increase in the level of crime. What we do with that change is entirely up to us. So too is how we choose to react to change. There will always be bad news in the headlines, fires during fire season and bad people who taint society. Those aspects of life will only change gradually over a very long period of time. But, there is always good news too, and good people all around us. We just don’t pay as much attention to them as we do to the “bad”. The only thing we can change at a whim, is our perspective. There is the old adage that reads “we can be sad that roses have thorns or happy that thorns have roses.” There are always two sides to a story, always.

Greetings in the name of Christ:

About perspective The human mind is a wonderful thing, but it struggles with numbers. Specifically really, really big numbers like the size of the Milky Way, or the drop in the bucket that is humanity’s existence in relation to the age of the universe. So here’s a cool way to explain that in a manner understandable by all. If the average person’s outstretched arms were to indicate the size of the Milky Way, and you scraped your nail over an emery board (nail file)… you would have wiped out the entirety of man’s existence. How about dem apples?

10368 7 The Numbers 2459

700 000

Warren Buffet is so rich that him spending $700 000, is the equivalent of the average person buying a can of Sprite.

Local Hero The LFPA and Partners This week we cannot single out a one person or organization as our local hero, because there were teams of people involved in this particular heroic act. Thank you to each and every one of the firefighters, pilots and coordinators who fought relentlessly against the Deerpark fire. Your efforts and continued vigilance keeps us safe and we salute you!

A brave Plan B for the redevelopment of the collapsed Sapekoe Tea Estate was envisaged by the department of agriculture, by earmarking it as the headquarters of the macadamia industry in South Africa. It was nothing more than a short sighted storm in a tea cup, as the estate’s future is still in the balance after twelve years. There was also a Plan C, which is now showing signs of hope for the vast Makgoba owned fertile land. Also on the front page was a photo of AgriLetaba’s Farmer of the Year, the late Mr Piet Minnaar of Gravelotte. Bulletin will show a front page of twelve years back for the rest of the year to recall memories on the main issues of yesteryear. Enjoy it!

“I am the way, the truth and the light” a well-known utterance of Christ. Now many may think that Jesus was only addressing His disciples or those who were listening to Him preaching at the time. It seems that in today’s modern world, with all the modern technology there is some doubt as to the validity of these words. We have the ability to build roads into the most impenetrable areas in the world, we can use a machine (lie-detector) to ascertain if a person is telling the truth and we can create artificial light to lighten our darkness. So what was Jesus really talking about? He was talking about our spiritual life and our life after we leave this world. If we believe that Jesus is our Saviour, then we need to follow Him and He will show us the way. However, we need to believe in Him and all He taught us while He was on earth, but even further we need to look at the lessons that were taught in the Old Testament. How the people had faith then and expected the coming of the Messiah. They had to believe in God in very difficult conditions, which in some way equate to what is happening in the world today. As we delve deeper into the scriptures we find that those who believed were saved from disaster. So our faith will have to be as strong as our forefathers and even stronger in some ways. It is often difficult for a new Christian to know where to start in the scripture, should they start with the Old Testament or the New Testament. A tip I was given was that one should start with the Gospels and then slowly work through the New Testament, leaving Revelations till the last, because it mainly contains visions of the future. A Christian is a follower of Christ so therefor it is of prime importance that we learn about Him and His life here on earth (the New Testament) we are endeavouring to build on our belief and need to find out how others reacted to being in the presence of Jesus. In reading through the Gospels we will also see why Jesus said I am the way, the truth and the light. The Old Testament can be seen as a history book as it records the formation of the earth and humans and also the struggles they had to face. Some see the Bible as all doom and gloom, but there is always a part that tells of the joy of believing. Blessings Ron

Theological course in evangelism An introductory course in evangelism will soon be presented in Tzaneen. The course will be presented by the local centre of Mukhanyo Distance. In the course students will learn what evangelism is, the central message of evangelism as well as the reason why Christians do evangelistic work. Time will also be spent to study the means and methods by which evangelism should be practised. Other interesting topics include person to person evangelism, the importance of follow-ups as well as the handling of stumbling blocks. All these topics are presented on a sound Biblical foundation. Mukhanyo is registered at all the relevant South African authorities for higher education. The college’s courses enable students to receive relevant, high quality, ho-

listic, affordable in-service distance training in theology. The study in evangelism forms part of Mukhanyo Distance’s Diploma course in Theology, but students are invited to enrol for this single module. Mukhanyo Distance invites everybody who is interested to attend the first lecture free of charge at 14:00 on Friday, 21 October 2016. The venue in Tzaneen is at the Reformed Church Laeveld, Claude Wheatley Street (opposite Hi-Q). The cost involved is R200 per module. A number of bursaries is also available which will enable students to study for R100 per module. This amount includes all study material. Students follow by DVD the same classes full time Mukhanyo students attend. Please contact dr Edmund de Beer (083 3911 065) for more information.

Building torched in apparent hate crime ed the site, a Samsung cellphone and a few coins were found n the ground at the spot where the fence had been cut. “The police at Ritavi police station opened a case of malicious damage to property instead of arson, and to date nothing is being done about it. When I ask, they tell me the man in charge was not available as he was attending a training course.” This tragedy follows shortly after a church and two shacks were burned down in the same area. “Although no one was hurt, I no longer feel safe here. On Wednesday the police came to question me regarding the rumour that I am going to burn Banyini Filling station which I know nothing about,” Raphala said. Raphala believes that there is more to this matter than meets the eye and according to him, his property was destroyed as a means to intimidate him. “This whole ordeal began in 1998 when the late Moses Mangena gave me this portion of land. Then from 2001 to date, I have been in and out of court with either the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, or Nkuna Royal Council, lodging eviction applications and the matter was dismissed with them having had to pay my legal cost.” he concluded. Ritavi police station spokesperson, Constable Mathebula, said she wasn’t at the office and therefore could not comment on the matter. — Phidelia Rikhotso

Suspected arsonists torched a recreational hall in Ventor Park village near Mhlava Cross and Lenyenye on Saturday. The vandals gained access by cutting through the property’s fence and used petrol to set the hall alight. According to the owner of the building, Matome Raphala, the incident occurred on Saturday at about 00:20. “I woke up to the smell of petrol. When I rushed outside I noticed the smoke bellowing out from my hall,” Raphala recalled. “I ran to investigate, but when I reached the hall the flames were already leaking through the roof. I tried to stop the fire but it was too late, so I retreated. I just stood helplessly watching everything the hall contained consumed by flames.” Raphala said that he alerted the police but there was nothing the authorities could do as the building had already been raised to the ground by that time. The following morning when the police investigat-

Marrying two art disciplines

Mr Brett Wayne Stanley exhibiting his art.

Mr Brett Wayne Stanley’s recent exhibition at the Magoebaskloof/ Haenertsburg Spring Fair was incredible. This Pretoria-based artist uses a combination of photography and digital painting technique. The combination of these two art disciplines makes Stanley only one of two artists in South Africa employing this method. His large work depicted here is of the bridge at Skukuza. The trains stopped running over this bridge in 1973. Stanley married two photos to depict

“Humiliation is poisonous. It’s one of the deepest pains of being human.” – Pierce Brosnan
