UNFORGIVABLE Health Minister Motsoaledi steps in A patient did in fact die as a result of the Letaba Hospital’s generator running out of diesel during a power outage in June. This was confirmed by National Health Minister dr Aaron Motsoaledi on Tuesday. Limpopo’s MEC for Health, Ms Phophi Ramathuba, vehemently denied this and her spokesperson at one stage even said that post-mortem results will show that the death (also of another patient) couldn’t have been as a result of a power outage. Bulletin reported in detail on the incident on 18 June and we then said that “senior doctors at the hospital warned that a cover up is suspected”. “Things here are in a mess,” a doctor was quoted telling us. Towards the end of 2014 members of the National Council of Provinces visited the hospital and stated that they were not happy with what they found and saw there.

Dr Motsoaledi also confirmed some other disturbing facts about the situation at Letaba. He has (at least) taken strong action and suspended the hospital manager, Mr P T Matodzi. Some of the findings that the Health Minister confirmed were: • Matodzi went home on the night when the power outage occurred. “A hospital manager may not do so,” Motsoaledi stated in a press conference. • The hospital’s financial manager used his own money to buy diesel for the emergency generator. Matodzi was warned a number of times to buy diesel for the generator, but he failed to do so. • The number of vacancies at Letaba is unacceptable and immediate action must be taken to fill the vacancies. A number of other questions have remained unanswered since 18 June’s tragic incident. A senior Police officer con-

firmed then that an inquest had been requested and promised to “look into the matter and report back” to us. This, however, never happened. We asked the Minister’s spokesperson on Wednesday for a copy of his announcement about the situation at the hospital, but he said it couldn’t be done and put the phone down without saying good-bye! • Bulletin will continue to follow up on the situation at Letaba Hospital.
